Motivated by the considerable success of alternative theories of gravity, we consider the toy model of a higher derivative Lagrangian theory, namely the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator studied in a recent paper by Hawking-Hertog. Its Euclidean Path Integral is studied with a certain detail and a pedagogical derivation of the propagator, which makes use of a Theorem due to Forman, is consequently proposed
It is shown that the N-Galilean conformal algebra, with N-odd, is the maximal symmetry algebra of the free Lagrangian involving (N+1)/2-th order time derivative.
Lagrangians linear in velocities were analyzed using the fractional calculus and the Euler-Lagrange equations were derived. Two examples were investigated in details, the explicit solutions of Euler-Lagrange equations were obtained and the recovery of the classical results was discussed.
We study the Fredholm minors associated with a Fredholm equation of the second type. We present a couple of new linear recursion relations involving the $n$th and $n-1$th minors, whose solution is a representation of the $n$th minor as an $n\times n$ determinant of resolvents. The latter is given a simple interpretation in terms of a path integral over non-interacting fermions. We also provide an explicit formula for the functional derivative of a Fredholm minor of order $n$ with respect to the kernel. Our formula is a linear combination of the $n$th and the $n\pm 1$th minors.
Lagrangian contact supersymmetries (depending on derivatives of arbitrary order) are treated in very general setting. The cohomology of the variational bicomplex on an arbitrary graded manifold and the iterated cohomology of a generic nilpotent contact supersymmetry are computed. In particular, the first variational formula and conservation laws for Lagrangian systems on graded manifolds using contact supersymmetries are obtained.
Motivated by BRST theory, we study generalized symmetries and supersymmetries depending on derivatives of dynamic variables in a most general setting. We state the first variational formula and conservation laws for higher order Lagrangian systems on fiber bundles and graded manifolds under generalized symmetries and supersymmetries of any order. Cohomology of nilpotent generalized supersymmetries are considered.
We consider higher-derivative perturbations of quantum gravity and quantum field theories in curved space and investigate tools to calculate counterterms and short-distance expansions of Feynman diagrams. In the case of single higher-derivative insertions we derive a closed formula that relates the perturbed one-loop counterterms to the unperturbed Schwinger-DeWitt coefficients. In the more general case, we classify the contributions to the short-distance expansion and outline a number of simplification methods. Certain difficulties of the common differential technique in the presence of highe…
The alternative version of Hamiltonian formalism for higher-derivative theories is proposed. As compared with the standard Ostrogradski approach it has the following advantages: (i) the Lagrangian, when expressed in terms of new variables yields proper equations of motion; no additional Lagrange multipliers are necessary (ii) the Legendre transformation can be performed in a straightforward way provided the Lagrangian is nonsingular in Ostrogradski sense. The generalization to singular Lagrangians as well as field theory are presented.
The classical fields with fractional derivatives are investigated by using the fractional Lagrangian formulation. The fractional Euler-Lagrange equations were obtained and two examples were studied.
Working to lowest non-trivial order in fermions, we consider the four-derivative order corrected Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformations of the Euclidean Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. By demonstrating supersymmetric invariance of the Lagrangian we determine all numerical coefficients in the system. In addition, the supersymmetry algebra is shown to close on the scalar and gauge fields. We also comment on the extension to Lorentzian and other non-Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=8$ 3-algebra theories.
The problems that are connected with Lagrangians which depend on higher order derivatives (namely additional degrees of freedom, unbound energy from below, etc.) are absent if effective Lagrangians are considered because the equations of motion may be used to eliminate all higher order time derivatives from the effective interaction term. The application of the equations of motion can be realized by performing field transformations that involve derivatives of the fields. Using the Hamiltonian formalism for higher order Lagrangians (Ostrogradsky formalism), Lagrangians that are related by such …
We explicitly calculate one-loop divergences for an arbitrary field theory model using the higher derivative regularization and nonsingular gauge condition. They are shown to agree with the results found in the dimensional regularization and do not depend on the form of regularizing term. So, the consistency of the higher derivative regularization is proven at the one-loop level. The result for the Yang-Mills theory is reproduced.
In this article we use an electromagnetic Lagrangian constructed so as to include dispersive effects in the description of an electromagnetic wave propagating in the Quantum Electrodynamic Vacuum. This Lagrangian is Lorentz invariant, includes contributions up to six powers in the electromagnetic fields and involves both fields and their first derivatives. Conceptual limitations inherent to the use of this higher derivative Lagrangian approach are discussed. We consider the one-dimensional spatial limit and obtain an exact solution of the nonlinear wave equation recovering the Korteveg-de Vrie…
In this paper, we review two related aspects of field theory: the modeling of the fields by means of exterior algebra and calculus, and the derivation of the field dynamics, i.e., the Euler-Lagrange equations, by means of the stationary action principle. In contrast to the usual tensorial derivation of these equations for field theories, that gives separate equations for the field components, two related coordinate-free forms of the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. These alternative forms of the equations, reminiscent of the formulae of vector calculus, are expressed in terms of vector de…
Newtons second law, Schrodingers equation and Maxwells equations are all theories composed of at most second-time derivatives. Indeed, it is not often we need to take the time derivative of the acceleration. So why are we not seeing more higher-order derivative theories? Although several studies present higher derivatives usefulness in quadratic gravity and scalar-field theories, one will eventually encounter a problem. In 1850, the physicist Mikhail Ostrogradsky presented a theorem that stated that a non-degenerate Lagrangian composed of finite higher-order time derivatives results in a Hamil…
We review the fate of the Ostrogradsky ghost in higher-order theories. We start by recalling the original Ostrogradsky theorem and illustrate, in the context of classical mechanics, how higher-derivatives Lagrangians lead to unbounded Hamiltonians and then lead to (classical and quantum) instabilities. Then, we extend the Ostrogradsky theorem to higher-derivatives theories of several dynamical variables and show the possibility to evade the Ostrogradsky instability when the Lagrangian is "degenerate", still in the context of classical mechanics. In particular, we explain why higher-derivatives…
The fermion determinant in an instanton background for a quark field of arbitrary mass is studied using the Schwinger proper-time representation with WKB scattering phase shifts for the relevant partial-wave differential operators. Previously, results have been obtained only for the extreme small and large quark mass limits, not for intermediate interpolating mass values. We show that consistent renormalization and large-mass asymptotics requires up to third-order in the WKB approximation. This procedure leads to an almost analytic answer, requiring only modest numerical approximation, and yie…
We consider the constraints on the effective Lagrangian of the rank-one gauge field on D-branes imposed by the equivalence between the description by ordinary gauge theory and that by non-commutative gauge theory in the presence of a constant B field. It is shown that we can consistently construct the two-derivative corrections to the Dirac-Born-Infeld Lagrangian up to the quartic order of field strength and the most general form which satisfies the constraints up to this order is derived.
It is shown that centrally extended N-Galilean conformal algebra, with N-odd, is the maximal symmetry algebra of the Schrodinger equation corresponding to the free Lagrangian involving (N+1)/2-th order time derivatives.
We rewrite the Born-Infeld Lagrangian, which is originally given by the determinant of a $4 \times 4$ matrix composed of the metric tensor $g$ and the field strength tensor $F$, using the determinant of a $(4 \cdot 2^n) \times (4 \cdot 2^n)$ matrix $H_{4 \cdot 2^{n}}$. If the elements of $H_{4 \cdot 2^{n}}$ are given by the linear combination of $g$ and $F$, it is found, based on the representation matrix for the multiplication operator of the Cayley-Dickson algebras, that $H_{4 \cdot 2^{n}}$ is distinguished by a single parameter, where distinguished matrices are not similar matrices. We also…
The usual prescription for constructing gauge-invariant Lagrangian is generalized to the case where a Lagrangian contains second derivatives of fields as well as first derivatives. Symmetric tensor fields in addition to the usual vector fields are introduced as gauge fields. Covariant derivatives and gauge-field strengths are determined.
Superconformal methods are useful to build invariant actions in supergravity. We have a good insight in the possibilities of actions that are at most quadratic in spacetime derivatives, but insight in general higher-derivative actions is missing. Recently higher-derivative actions got more attention for several applications. One of these is the understanding of finiteness of loop computations in supergravities. Divergences can only occur if invariant counterterms or anomalies exist. One can wonder whether conformal symmetry might also play a role in this context. In order to construct higher-d…
We classify all the six derivative Lagrangians of gravity, whose traced field equations are of second or third order, in arbitrary dimensions. In the former case, the Lagrangian in dimensions greater than six, reduces to an arbitrary linear combination of the six dimensional Euler density and the two linearly independent cubic Weyl invariants. In five dimensions, besides the independent cubic Weyl invariant, we obtain an interesting cubic combination, whose field equations for static spherically symmetric spacetimes are of second order. In the later case, in arbitrary dimensions we obtain two …
For classical relativistic field theory in Minkowski space-time, the addition of a superpotential term to a conserved current density is trivial in the sense that it does not modify the local conservation law nor change the conserved charge, though it may allow us to obtain a current density with some improved properties. The addition of a total derivative term to a Lagrangian density is also trivial in the sense that it does not modify the equations of motion of the theory. These facts suggest that both operations are related and possibly equivalent to each other for any global symmetry of an…
We consider the distribution of the complex phase of the fermion determinant in QCD at nonzero chemical potential and examine the physical conditions under which the distribution takes a Gaussian form. We then calculate the baryon number as a function of the complex phase of the fermion determinant and show 1) that the exponential cancellations produced by the sign problem take the form of total derivatives 2) that the full baryon number is orthogonal to this noise. These insights allow us to define a self-consistency requirement for measurements of the baryon number in lattice simulations.
As the first step to extend our understanding of higher-derivative theories, within the framework of analytic mechanics of point particles, we construct a ghost-free theory involving third-order time derivatives in Lagrangian. While eliminating linear momentum terms in the Hamiltonian is necessary and sufficient to kill the ghosts associated with higher derivatives for Lagrangian with at most second-order derivatives, we find that this is necessary but not sufficient for the Lagrangian with higher than second-order derivatives. We clarify a set of ghost-free conditions under which we show that…
The consistency of Matrix theory with supergravity requires that in the large N_c limit terms of order v^4 in the SU(N_c) Matrix effective potential are not renormalized beyond one loop in perturbation theory. For SU(2) gauge group, the required non-renormalization theorem was proven recently by Paban, Sethi and Stern. In this paper we consider the constraints supersymmetry imposes on these terms for groups SU(N_c) with N_c>2. Non-renormalization theorems are proven for certain tensor structures, including the structures that appear in the one-loop effective action. However it is expected othe…
The gauging of the q-Poincaré algebra of ref. hep-th 9312179 yields a non-commutative generalization of the Einstein-Cartan lagrangian. We prove its invariance under local q-Lorentz rotations and, up to a total derivative, under q-diffeomorphisms. The variations of the fields are given by their q-Lie derivative, in analogy with the q=1 case. The algebra of q-Lie derivatives is shown to close with field dependent structure functions. The equations of motion are found, generalizing the Einstein equations and the zero-torsion condition.
In the framework of ordinary-derivative approach, conformal gravity in space-time of dimension six is studied. The field content, in addition to conformal graviton field, includes two auxiliary rank-2 symmetric tensor fields, two Stueckelberg vector fields and one Stueckelberg scalar field. Gauge invariant Lagrangian with conventional kinetic terms and the corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. One of the rank-2 tensor fields and the scalar field have canonical conformal dimension. With respect to these fields, the Lagrangian contains, in addition to other terms, a cubic potential. …
For a wide class of mechanical systems, invariant under gauge transformations with higher (arbitrary) order time derivatives of gauge parameters, the equivalence of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian BRST formalisms is proved. It is shown that the Ostrogradsky formalism establishes the natural rules to relate the BFV ghost canonical pairs with the ghosts and antighosts introduced by the Lagrangian approach. Explicit relation between corresponding gauge-fixing terms is obtained.
Our investigation of differential conservation laws in Lagrangian field theory is based on the first variational formula which provides the canonical decomposition of the Lie derivative of a Lagrangian density by a projectable vector field on a bundle (Part 1: gr-qc/9510061). If a Lagrangian density is invariant under a certain class of bundle isomorphisms, its Lie derivative by the associated vector fields vanishes and the corresponding differential conservation laws take place. If these vector fields depend on derivatives of parameters of bundle transformations, the conserved current reduces…
We construct no-ghost theories of analytic mechanics involving arbitrary higher-order derivatives in Lagrangian. It has been known that for theories involving at most second-order time derivatives in the Lagrangian, eliminating linear dependence of canonical momenta in the Hamiltonian is necessary and sufficient condition to eliminate Ostrogradsky ghost. In the previous work we showed for the specific quadratic model involving third-order derivatives that the condition is necessary but not sufficient, and linear dependence of canonical coordinates corresponding to higher time-derivatives also …
Ostrogradsky instability generally appears in nondegenerate higher-order derivative theories and this issue can be resolved by removing any existing degeneracy present in such theories. We consider an action involving terms that are at most quadratic in second derivatives of the scalar field and non-minimally coupled with the curvature tensors. We perform a 3+1 decomposition of the Lagrangian to separate second-order time derivative terms from rest. This decomposition is useful for checking the degeneracy hidden in the Lagrangian and helps us find conditions under which Ostrogradsky instabilit…
The gravitational Lagrangian can be written as a summation of a bulk and a total derivative term. For some theories of gravity such as Einstein gravity, or more general Lovelock gravities, there are Lagrangian holographic relations between the bulk and the total derivative term such that the latter is fully determined by the former. However at the $D\rightarrow 2\&4$ limit, the bulks of Einstein or Gauss-Bonnet theories become themselves total derivatives. Performing the Kaluza-Klein reduction on Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities gives rise to some two-dimensional or four-dimensional scalar-…
By adding the total time derivatives of all the constraints to the Lagrangian step by step, we achieve the further work of the Dirac conjecture left by Dirac. Hitherto, the Dirac conjecture is proved completely. It is worth noticing that the addition of the total time derivatives to the Lagrangian can turn up some constraints hiding in the original Lagrangian. For a constrained system, the extended Hamiltonian $H_E$ considers more constraints, and shows symmetries more obviously than the total Hamiltonian $H_T$. In the Lagrangian formalism, we reconsider the Cawley counterexample, and offer an…
We study a higher derivative (HD) field theory with an arbitrary order of derivative for a real scalar field. The degree of freedom for the HD field can be converted to multiple fields with canonical kinetic terms up to the overall sign. The Lagrangian describing the dynamics of the multiple fields is known as the Lee-Wick (LW) form. The first step to obtain the LW form for a given HD Lagrangian is to find an auxiliary field (AF) Lagrangian which is equivalent to the original HD Lagrangian up to the quantum level. Till now, the AF Lagrangian has been studied only for N=2 and 3 cases, where $N$…
A derivative expansion technique is developed to compute functional determinants of quadratic operators, non diagonal in spacetime indices. This kind of operators arise in general 't Hooft gauge fixed Lagrangians. Elaborate applications of the developed derivative expansion are presented.
Conformal fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Second-derivative formulation for spin 0,1,2 conformal bosonic fields and first-derivative formulation for spin 1/2,3/2 conformal fermionic fields are developed. For the spin 1,3/2,2 conformal fields, we obtain gauge invariant Lagrangians and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving Stueckelberg fields and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries is obtained. Modified Lorentz and de Donder gauge conditions are introduced. Ordinary…
A derivation of the one-loop effective Lagrangian in the self-interacting $O(N)$ scalar theory, in slowly varying gravitational fields, is presented (using $ζ$-regularization and heat-kernel techniques). The result is given in terms of the expansion in powers of the curvature tensors (up to quadratic terms) and their derivatives, as well as in derivatives of the background scalar field (up to second derivatives). The renormalization group improved effective Lagrangian is studied, what gives the leading-log approach of the whole perturbation theory. An analysis of the effective equations (back-…

Theories with higher order time derivatives generically suffer from ghost-like instabilities, known as Ostrogradski instabilities. This fate can be avoided by considering "degenerate" Lagrangians, whose kinetic matrix cannot be inverted, thus leading to constraints between canonical variables and a reduced number of physical degrees of freedom. In this work, we derive in a systematic way the degeneracy conditions for scalar-tensor theories that depend quadratically on second order derivatives of a scalar field. We thus obtain a classification of all degenerate theories within this class of sca…
Starting from the 4-dimensional gluodynamics, we discuss the statistical ensemble of torons ( the toron is a self-dual solution with fractional topological number; it can be understood as a point defect) which interact strongly. It is shown that the effective Lagrangian describing this statistical ensemble possesses the fourth derivative kinetic term and leads to the area law for the Wilson loop. Besides that we derive the effective string action containing the rigid (extrinsic curvature) term as a consequence of the fourth derivative action.
The Lanczos-Lovelock models of gravity constitute the most general theories of gravity in D dimensions which satisfy (a) the principle of of equivalence, (b) the principle of general co-variance, and (c) have field equations involving derivatives of the metric tensor only up to second order. The mth order Lanczos-Lovelock Lagrangian is a polynomial of degree m in the curvature tensor. The field equations resulting from it become trivial in the critical dimension $D = 2m$ and the action itself can be written as the integral of an exterior derivative of an expression involving the vierbeins, in …
We present an example of the quantum system with higher derivatives in the Lagrangian, which is ghost-free: the spectrum of the Hamiltonian is bounded from below and unitarity is preserved.
In the framework of metric-like approach, totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic conformal fields propagating in flat space-time are studied. Depending on the values of conformal dimension, spin, and dimension of space-time, we classify all conformal field as long, partial-short, short, and special conformal fields. An ordinary-derivative (second-derivative) Lagrangian formulation for such conformal fields is obtained. The ordinary-derivative Lagrangian formulation is realized by using double-traceless gauge fields, Stueckelberg fields, and auxiliary fields. Gauge-fixed Lagrangian invariant …
We perform a Hamiltonian analysis of a large class of scalar-tensor Lagrangians which depend quadratically on the second derivatives of a scalar field. By resorting to a convenient choice of dynamical variables, we show that the Hamiltonian can be written in a very simple form, where the Hamiltonian and the momentum constraints are easily identified. In the case of degenerate Lagrangians, which include the Horndeski and beyond Horndeski quartic Lagrangians, our analysis confirms that the dimension of the physical phase space is reduced by the primary and secondary constraints due to the degene…
A short review of basic formulas from Hamiltonian formalism in classical mechanics in the case when Lagrangian contains N time-derivatives of n coordinate variables. For non-local models N=infinity.
This paper shows a new approach to obtain analytical topological defects of a 2D Myers-Pospelov Lagrangian for two scalar fields. Such a Lagrangian presents higher-order kinetic terms, which lead us to equations of motion which are non-trivial to be integrated. Here we describe three possible scenarios for the equations of motion, named by timelike, spacelike and lightlike respectively. We started our investigation with a kink-like travelling wave Ansatz for the free theory, which led us to constraints for the dispersion relations of each scenario. We also introduced a procedure to obtain anal…
We extend the perturbative approach developed in an earlier work to deal with Lagrangians which have arbitrary higher order time derivative terms for both bosons and fermions. This approach enables us to find an effective Lagrangian with only first time derivatives order by order in the coupling constant. As in the pure bosonic case, to the first order, the quantized Hamiltonian is bounded from below whenever the potential is. We show in the example of a single complex fermion that higher derivative interactions result in an effective mass and change of vacuum for the low energy modes. The sup…
We consider a topological coupling between a pseudo-scalar field and a 3-form gauge field in ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric higher derivative 3-form gauge theories in four spacetime dimensions. We show that ghost/tachyon-free higher derivative Lagrangians with the topological coupling can generate various potentials for the pseudo-scalar field by solving the equation of motion for the 3-form gauge field. We give two examples of higher derivative Lagrangians and the corresponding potentials: one is a quartic order term of the field strength and the other is the term which can generate a cosine-typ…
A general theory is presented of quantum mechanics of singular, non-autonomous, higher derivative systems. Within that general theory, $n$-th order and $m$-th order Lagrangians are shown to be quantum mechanically equivalent if their difference is a total derivative.
We show the consistent interactions in the generalized electrodynamics gauge theory with higher derivative matter fields by means of the order reduction method. We deduce the BRST deformations in the reduced Lagrangian and using the equations of motion of the auxiliary fields in the antighost number zero part in the resulting deformed action, we are able to obtain the consistent coupling terms added into the original Lagrangian density which are compatible with the deformation master equations. We emphasize that the order of deformations is truncated at four and the corresponding higher-order …
The unimodular version of the ghost-free higher derivative gravity is obtained. It is the unimodular reduction of some particular lagrangians quadratic in curvature.
It has been suggested that the chiral symmetry can be implemented only in classical Lagrangians containing higher covariant derivatives of odd order. Contrary to this belief, it is shown that one can construct an exactly soluble two-dimensional higher-derivative fermionic quantum field theory containing only derivatives of even order whose classical Lagrangian exhibits chiral-gauge invariance. The original field solution is expressed in terms of usual Dirac spinors through a canonical transformation, whose generating function allows the determination of the new Hamiltonian. It is emphasized th…
