A short review of basic formulas from Hamiltonian formalism in classical mechanics in the case when Lagrangian contains N time-derivatives of n coordinate variables. For non-local models N=infinity.
The constrained Hamiltonian formalism is worked out for the theories where the gauge symmetry parameters are unfree, being restricted by differential equations. The Hamiltonian BFV-BRST embedding is elaborated for this class of gauge theories. The general formalism is exemplified by the linearized unimodular gravity.
In this short note we formulate Covariant Hamiltonian formalism for strings, p-branes and Non-BPS Dp-branes. We also analyse the vacuum tachyon condensation in case of unstable D1-brane.
We consider constrained multi-Hamiltonian formulation for the extended Chern-Simons theory with higher derivatives of arbitrary finite order. The order $n$ extension of the theory admits $(n-1)$-parametric series of conserved tensors. The $00$-component of any representative of the series can be chosen as Hamiltonian. The theory admits a series of Hamiltonian formulations, including the canonical Ostrogradski formulation. The Hamiltonian formulations with different Hamiltonians are not connected by canonical transformations. Also, we demonstrate the inclusion of stable interactions with charge…
This short note is devoted to the canonical analysis of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity with mixed derivative terms that was proposed in arXiv:1604.04215. We determine the algebra of constraints and we show that there is one additional scalar degree of freedom with respect to the non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity.
Pedagogical Introduction to Hamiltonian BRST formalism
We construct non-relativistic string and p-brane actions in Newton-Cartan background using the limiting procedure from the relativistic string and p-brane action in general background. We also find their Hamiltonian formulations when however we restrict ourselves to the case of the vanishing gauge field.
We study systematically finite BRST-BFV transformations in the generalized Hamiltonian formalism. We present explicitly their Jacobians and the form of a solution to the compensation equation determining the functional field dependence of finite Fermionic parameters, necessary to generate arbitrary finite change of gauge-fixing functions in the path integral.
We study systematically finite BRST-BFV transformations in $Sp(2)$-extended generalized Hamiltonian formalism. We present explicitly their Jacobians and the form of a solution to the compensation equation determining the functional field dependence of finite Fermionic parameters, necessary to generate arbitrary finite change of gauge-fixing functions in the path integral.
Theories with higher derivatives involve linear instabilities in the Hamiltonian commonly known as Ostrogradski ghosts and can be viewed as a very serious problem during quantization. To cure {this} , we have considered the properties of antilinearty that can be found inherently in the non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Owing to the existence of antilinearity, we can construct an operator, called the $V$-operator, which acts as an intertwining operator between the Hamiltonian and its hermitian conjugate. We have used this $V$-operator to remove the linear momenta term from the higher derivative Hamil…
We consider the four dimensional topologically massive electrodynamics in which a gauge field is interacting with 2nd rank antisymmetric tensor field through a topological interaction. The photon becomes massive by eating the 2nd rank tensor field, which is dual to the Higgs mechanism. We explicitly demonstrate the nature of the mechanism by performing a canonical analysis of the theory and discuss various aspects of it.
Most general third-order $3d$ linear gauge vector field theory is considered. The field equations involve, besides the mass, two dimensionless constant parameters. The theory admits two-parameter series of conserved tensors with the canonical energy-momentum being a particular representative of the series. For a certain range of the model parameters, the series of conserved tensors include bounded quantities. This makes the dynamics classically stable, though the canonical energy is unbounded in all the instances. The free third-order equations are shown to admit constrained multi-Hamiltonian …
We study the Hamiltonian structure of tri-gravity and four-gravity in the framework of ADM decomposition of the corresponding metrics. Hence we can deduce the general structure of the constraint system of multi-gravity. We will show it is possible and consistent to assume additional constraints which provide the needed first class constraints for generating diffeomorphism as well as enough second class constraints to omit the ghosts.
In this work we study the so-called ModMax nonlinear electrodynamics, which is a novel model designed to preserve duality rotations and conformal transformations, such as the Maxwell's equations do. This model allows to study diverse gravitational phenomena when is coupled to General Relativity, in particular charged black holes and gravitational waves. In the present work we focus in the dynamics and Hamiltonian analysis of the model. Specifically, we analyze the propagation of the discontinuities of the field and obtain the corresponding dispersion relations. To perform the Hamiltonian analy…
The standard way to construct a path integral is to use a Legendre transformation to find the hamiltonian, to repeatedly insert complete sets of states into the time-evolution operator, and then to integrate over the momenta. This procedure is simple when the action is quadratic in its time derivatives, but in most other cases Legendre's transformation is intractable, and the hamiltonian is unknown. This paper shows how to construct path integrals when one can't find the hamiltonian because the first time derivatives of the fields occur in ways that make a Legendre transformation intractable; …
The equivalence between a higher derivative extension of Maxwell-Chern-Simons Proca model and some gauge invariant theories from the point of view of the Hamiltonian path integral quantization in the framework of gauge-unfixing approach is investigated. The Hamiltonian path integrals of the first-class systems take manifestly Lorentz-covariant forms.
Theories with an infinite number of derivatives are described by non-local Lagrangians for which the standard Hamiltonian formalism cannot be applied. Hamiltonians of special types of non-local theories can be constructed by means of the (1+1)-dimensional Hamiltonian formalism. In this paper, we consider a simple scalar field model inspired by the infinite derivative gravity and study its reduced phase space by using this formalism. Assuming the expansion of the solutions in the coupling constant, we compute the perturbative Hamiltonian and the symplectic 2-form. We also discuss an example of …
