In this article we use an electromagnetic Lagrangian constructed so as to include dispersive effects in the description of an electromagnetic wave propagating in the Quantum Electrodynamic Vacuum. This Lagrangian is Lorentz invariant, includes contributions up to six powers in the electromagnetic fields and involves both fields and their first derivatives. Conceptual limitations inherent to the use of this higher derivative Lagrangian approach are discussed. We consider the one-dimensional spatial limit and obtain an exact solution of the nonlinear wave equation recovering the Korteveg-de Vries type periodic waves and solitons given in S. V. Bulanov et al., Phys. Rev. D, 101, 016016 (2020).
In this paper, the Lagrangian density for the vacuum is mainly discussed, meanwhile, the matter field, the modified Lorentz transformation relations and the reasons for the invariance of the velocity of light in the vacuum are also discussed.
When Lorentz invariance is violated at high energy, the laws of black hole thermodynamics are apparently no longer satisfied. To shed light on this observation, we study dispersive fields in de Sitter space. We show that the Bunch-Davies vacuum state restricted to the static patch is no longer thermal, and that the Tolman law is violated. However we also show that, for free fields at least, this vacuum is the only stationary stable state, as if it were in equilibrium. We then present a precise correspondence between dispersive effects found in de Sitter and in black hole metrics. This indicate…
The spacetime dependent lagrangian formalism of references [1-2] is used to obtain a classical solution of Yang-Mills theory. This is then used to obtain an estimate of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field, viz. $ϕ_{a}=A/e$, where $A$ is a constant and $e$ is the Yang-Mills coupling (related to the usual electric charge). The solution can also accommodate non-commuting coordinates on the boundary of the theory which may be used to construct D-brane actions. PACS:11.15.-q ; 11.27+d ; 11.10.Ef
Given the anomalous magnetic moments of electrons and positrons in the one-loop approximation, we calculate the exact Lagrangian of an intense constant magnetic field that replaces the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian in traditional quantum electrodynamics (QED). We have established that the derived generalization of the Lagrangian is real for arbitrary magnetic fields. In a weak field, the calculated Lagrangian matches the standard Heisenberg-Euler formula. In extremely strong fields, the field dependence of the Lagrangian completely disappears, and the Lagrangian tends to a constant determined by…
The effective Lagrangian of electromagnetic fields at the cubic order in field strength has been considered. This generalized Lagrangian is motivated by electrodynamics on non-commutative spaces. We find the canonical and symmetrical energy-momentum tensors and show that they possess non-zero traces. The propagation of a linearly polarized laser beam in the external transverse magnetic field is investigated. We evaluate the induced ellipticity which allows us to obtain a constraint on parameters introduced from the PVLAS experimental data.
We unify and generalize the notions of vacuum and amplitude in linear quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Crucially, the generalized notion admits a localization in spacetime regions and on hypersurfaces. The underlying concept is that of a Lagrangian subspace of the space of complexified germs of solutions of the equations of motion on hypersurfaces. Traditional vacua and traditional amplitudes correspond to the special cases of definite and real Lagrangian subspaces respectively. Further, we introduce both infinitesimal and asymptotic methods for vacuum selection that involve a localiz…

In this work, extending a previous study at zero temperature ($T=0$), we perform a systematic study of the modifications to the QCD vacuum energy density $ε_{vac}$ in the finite-temperature case, above the chiral transition at $T_c$, caused by a nonzero value of the parameter $θ$, using two different effective Lagrangian models which implement the $U(1)$ axial anomaly of the fundamental theory and which are both well defined also above $T_c$. In particular, we derive (and critically compare) the expressions for the topological susceptibility $χ$ and for the second cumulant $c_4$ starting from …
We perform a systematic study of the modifications to the QCD vacuum energy density $ε_{vac}$ in the zero-temperature case ($T=0$) caused by a small, but non-zero, value of the parameter $θ$, using different effective Lagrangian models which include the flavour-singlet meson field and implement the $U(1)$ axial anomaly of the fundamental theory. In particular, we derive the expressions for the topological susceptibility $χ$ and for the second cumulant $c_4$ starting from the $θ$ dependence of $ε_{vac}(θ)$ in the various models that we have considered. Moreover, we evaluate numerically our resu…
The influence of an external electromagnetic field on the vacuum structure of a quantized Dirac field is investigated by considering the quantum corrections to classical Maxwell's lagrangian density induced by fluctuations of the non-perturbative vacuum. Effective Lagrangian densities for Maxwell's theory in (3+1) and (2+1) dimensions are derived from the vacuum zero-point energy of the fermion field in the context of a consistent Pauli-Villars-Rayski subtraction scheme, recovering Euler-Kockel-Heisenberg and Maxwell-Chern-Simons effective theories. Effective scalar quantum electrodymanics as …
We propose a new mechanism for symmetry breaking in which, apart from particle degrees of freedom, topological degrees of freedom also emerge. In this method, a decomposition for the fields of the Yang-Mills-Higgs theory is introduced and Lagrangian is written based on new variables. This new Lagrangian does not change the dynamics of the theory, at least at the classical level. We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking for this new Lagrangian and show that how it works in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. In the case of Abelian gauge theory our method adds nothing new to the so-called …
We compute the combined effect of confinement, an external magnetic field and temperature on the vacuum of the charged scalar field using Schwinger's formula for the effective action in the imaginary time formalism. The final result reproduces an effective Lagrangian similar to the Heisenberg-Euler one in the limit of no confinement, in the case of confinement it provides the necessary corrections to this Lagrangian at each order of magnitude of the magnetic field. The results show a finite temperature contribution to the vacum permeability constant apart from the one due to confinement alone.
To reveal the Schwinger effect for quarks, i.e., pair creation process of quarks and antiquarks, we derive the vacuum decay rate at strong coupling using AdS/CFT correspondence. Magnetic fields, in addition to the electric field responsible for the pair creation, causes prominent effects on the rate, and is important also in experiments such as RHIC/LHC heavy ion collisions. In this paper, through the gravity dual we obtain the full Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian of N=2 supersymmetric QCD and study the Schwinger mechanism with not only a constant electric field but also a constant magnetic field …
I reexamine the phenomena of the chromomagnetic gluon condensation in Yang-Mills theory. The extension of the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian to the Yang-Mills theory allows to calculate the effective action, the energy-momentum tensor and demonstrate that the energy density curve crosses the zero energy level of the perturbative vacuum state at nonzero angle and continuously enters to the negative energy density region. At the crossing point and further down the effective coupling constant is small and demonstrate that the true vacuum state of the Yang-Mills theory is below the perturbative vacuu…
In nonlinear electrodynamics, by implementing the causality principle as the requirement that the group velocity of elementary excitations over a background field should not exceed the speed of light in the vacuum and the unitarity principle as the requirement that the residue of the propagator should be nonnegative, we establish the positive convexity of the effective Lagrangian on the class of constant fields, also the positivity of all characteristic dielectric and magnetic permittivity constants that are derivatives of the effective Lagrangian with respect to the field invariants. Violatio…
We attempt to evaluate the effective Lagrangian for a classical background field interacting with the vacuum of two quantum fields. The integration of one of the quantum fields in general leads to a non-local term in the effective Lagrangian and thus becomes intractable during the integration of the other quantum field. We show that $ϕF \tilde{K}$ interaction is an exception. We present the complete calculation for the evaluation of the effective Lagrangian for a pseudoscalar field interacting with photons in the presence of a background electromagnetic field. Expression for the probability of…
We compute the influence of boundary conditions on the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian scalar QED scalar for the case of a pure magnetic field. The boundary conditions constrain the quantum scalar field to vanish on two parallel planes separeted by a distance $a$ and the magnetic field is assumed to be constant, uniform and perpendicular to the planes. The effective Lagrangian is obtained using Schwinger's proper-time representation and exhibits new contributions generated by the boundary condition much in the same way as a material pressed between two plates exhibits new magnetic proper…
We analyze vacuum instability of strongly coupled gauge theories in a constant electric field using AdS/CFT correspondence. The model is the N=2 1-flavor supersymmetric large N_c QCD in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit. We calculate the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian L(E), which encodes the nonlinear response and the quantum decay rate of the vacuum in a background electric field E, from the complex D-brane action in AdS/CFT. We find that the decay rate given by Im L(E) becomes nonzero above a critical electric field set by the confining force between quarks. A large-E expansion of Im…
We consider the vacuum energy of the electromagnetic field in the background of spherically symmetric dielectrics, subject to a cut-off frequency in the dispersion relations. The effect of this frequency dependent boundary condition between media is described in terms of the {\it incomplete} $ζ$-functions of the problem. The use of the Debye asymptotic expansion for Bessel functions allows to determine the dominant (volume, area, ...) terms in the Casimir energy. The application of these expressions to the case of a gas bubble immersed in water is discussed, and results consistent with Schwing…
In this paper, we provide a vacuum solution with torsion in quadratic Riemann-curvature gravity. Physically, the solution means that vacuum can have a nonzero vacuum field with large torsion. We show that the Einstein-Hilbert action can be derived if we expand the quadratic curvature of the Lagrangian in a torsion-free Riemannian space-time around a nonzero vacuum field. We also show that the cosmological constant caused by a nonzero vacuum field is equal to zero.
We study negative modes around the Coleman-de Luccia bounce solution. The conditions for the appearance of an infinite number of the negative modes do not coincide between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations in the literature, and we discuss the origin of this difference in detail. We show how different choices of the variable for the fluctuation around the bounce solution affect the negative mode condition in the Hamiltonian approach, and point out that there exists a choice which gives the same negative mode condition as the Lagrangian approach.
Withdrawn: A short-proof of the non-existence of quartic terms in the Lagrangian of Ue(1)xUg(1) is given in the Addendum of hep-th/0601166 (Europhys.Lett.85:59901,2009).
We carry out a model-independent EFT method study on the vacuum statistics of general F-term SUSY breaking models. Assuming a smooth distribution of Lagrangian parameters, SUSY breaking vacua are rare in global SUSY models with a canonical Kähler potential, and have a peaked distribution near the cut-off of the SUSY breaking scale in both global SUSY and SUGRA models with a general Kähler potential. After including different mass scales in the Lagrangian, we compare the total number of SUSY and non-SUSY vacua and estimate quantitatively the rareness of SUSY breaking. The EFT method provides a …
Vacuum polarization and particle production effects in classical electromagnetic and gravitational backgrounds can be studied by the effective lagrangian method. Background field configurations for which the effective lagrangian is zero are special in the sense that the lowest order quantum corrections vanishes for such configurations. We propose here the conjecture that there will be neither particle production nor vacuum polarization in classical field configurations for which all the scalar invariants are zero. We verify this conjecture, by explicitly evaluating the effective lagrangian, fo…
We construct a unified covariant derivative that contains the sum of an affine connection and a Yang-Mills field. With it we construct a lagrangian that is invariant both under diffeomorphisms and Yang-Mills gauge transformations. We assume that metric and symmetric affine connection are independent quantities, and make the observation that the metric must be able to generate curvature, just as the connection, so there should be an extra tensor similar to Riemann's in the equations but constructed from metrics and not connections. We find the equations generated by the lagrangian and introduce…
The Lagrangian of the seesaw mechanism is C violating but the same Lagrangian when re-written in terms of Majorana neutrinos is manifestly C invariant. To resolve this puzzling feature, a relativistic analogue of Bogoliubov transformation, which preserves CP but explicitly breaks C and P separately, was introduced together with the notions of a Bogoliubov quasiparticle and an analogue of the energy gap in BCS theory. The idea of Majorana neutrino as Bogoliubov quasiparticle was then suggested. In this paper, we study the vacuum structure of the Bogoliubov quasiparticle which becomes heavy by a…
Within the relativistic Hartree approach using a Lagrangian with density-dependent parameters respecting the chiral limit, it is found that the vacuum corrections from the nucleon Dirac sea soften the equation of state and favor the chiral symmetry restoration at high densities.
We study vacuum stability in 1+1 dimensional Conformal Field Theories with external background fields. We show that the vacuum decay rate is given by a non-local two-form. This two-form is a boundary term that must be added to the effective in/out Lagrangian. The two-form is expressed in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert decomposition for background gauge fields, and its novel "functional" version in the gravitational case.
Following a minisuperspace approach to the dynamics of a spherically symmetric shell, a reduced Lagrangian for the radial degree of freedom is derived directly from the Einstein-Hilbert action. The key feature of this new Lagrangian is its invariance under time reparametrization. Indeed, all classical and quantum dynamics is encoded in the Hamiltonian constraint that follows from that invariance. Thus, at the classical level, we show that the Hamiltonian constraint reproduces, in a simple gauge, Israel's matching condition which governs the evolution of the shell. In the quantum case, the vani…
We construct the Georgi-Glashow Lagrangian for gauge group SU_q(n). Breaking this symmetry spontaneously gives q-dependent masses of gauge field and vacuum manifold. It turned out that the vacuum manifold is parameterized by the non-commutative quantities. We showed that the monopole solutions exist in this model, which is indicated by the presence of the BPS states.
The work is devoted to studying some new classical electrodynamics models of interacting charged point particles and related with them physical aspects. Based on the vacuum field theory no-geometry approach, developed in \cite{BPT,BPT1}, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian reformulations of some alternative classical electrodynamics models are devised. A problem closely related to the radiation reaction force is analyzed aiming to explain the Wheeler and Feynman reaction radiation mechanism, well known as the absorption radiation theory, and strongly dependent on the Mach type interaction of a char…
