Branching of symplectic groups is not multiplicity-free. We describe a new approach to resolving these multiplicities that is based on studying the associated branching algebra $B$. The algebra $B$ is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of $Sp_{2n-2}$ in irreducible representations of $Sp_{2n}$. Our first theorem states that the map taking an element of $Sp_{2n}$ to its principal $n \times (n+1)$ submatrix induces an isomorphism of $\B$ to a different branching algebra $\B'$. The algebra $\B'$ encodes multiplicities of irreducible representations of $GL_{n-1}$ in certain irreducible representations of $GL_{n+1}$. Our second theorem is that each multiplicity space that arises in the restriction of an irreducible representation of $Sp_{2n}$ to $Sp_{2n-2}$ is canonically an irreducible module for the $n$-fold product of $SL_{2}$. In particular, this induces a canonical decomposition of the multiplicity spaces into one dimensional spaces, thereby resolving the multiplicities.
Over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero, we prove the multiplicity preservation for orthogonal-symplectic dual pair correspondences and unitary dual pair correspondences.
We study branching multiplicity spaces of complex classical groups in terms of GL(2) representations. In particular, we show how combinatorics of GL(2) representations are intertwined to make branching rules under the restriction of GL(n) to GL(n-2). We also discuss analogous results for the symplectic and orthogonal groups.
Let G be a special orthogonal group or an inner form of a symplectic group over a number field F such that there exists a non-empty set S of real places of F at which G has discrete series and outside of which G is quasi-split. We prove Arthur's multiplicity formula for automorphic representations of G having algebraic regular infinitesimal character at all places in S.
In this paper branching rules for the fundamental representations of the symplectic groups in positive characteristic are found. The submodule structure of the restrictions of the fundamental modules for the group $Sp_{2n}(K)$ to the naturally embedded subgroup $Sp_{2n-2}(K)$ is determined. As a corollary, inductive systems of fundamental representations for $Sp_{\infty}(K)$ are classified. The submodule structure of the fundamental Weyl modules is refined.
We study the decomposition as an $\textrm{SO}(3)$-module of the multiplicity space corresponding to the branching from $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$ to $\textrm{SO}(n)$. Here, $\textrm{SO}(n)$ (resp.\ $\textrm{SO}(3)$) is considered embedded in $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$ in the upper left-hand block (resp.\ lower right-hand block). We show that when the highest weight of the irreducible representation of $\textrm{SO}(n)$ interlaces the highest weight of the irreducible representation of $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$, then the multiplicity space decomposes as a tensor product of $\lfloor (n+2)/2\rfloor$ reducible representa…
Let $(M,ω)$ be a connected symplectic manifold on which a connected Lie group $G$ acts properly and in a Hamiltonian fashion with moment map $μ:M \lra \mf g^*$. Our purpose is investigate multiplicity-free actions, giving criteria to decide a multiplicity freenes of the action. As an application we give the complete classification of multiplicity-free actions of compact Lie groups acting isometrically and in a Hamiltonian fashion on Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Successively we make a connection between multiplicity-free actions on $M$ and multiplicity-free actions on the symp…
In this paper we consider (polynomial) solution spaces for the symplectic Dirac operator (with a focus on $1$-homogeneous solutions). This space forms an infinite-dimensional representation space for the symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(2m)$. Because $\mathfrak{so}(m)\subset \mathfrak{sp}(2m)$, this leads to a branching problem which generalises the classical Fischer decomposition in harmonic analysis. Due to the infinite nature of the solution spaces for the symplectic Dirac operators, this is a non-trivial question: both the summands appearing in the decomposition and their explicit emb…
We prove several multiplicity one theorems in this paper. For k a local field not of characteristic two, and V a symplectic space over k, any irreducible admissible representation of the symplectic similitude group GSp(V) decomposes with multiplicity one when restricted to the symplectic group Sp(V). We prove the analogous result for GO(V) and O(V), where V is an orthogonal space over k. When k is non-archimedean, we prove the uniqueness of Fourier-Jacobi models for representations of GSp(4), and the existence of such models for supercuspidal representations of GSp(4).
We study the symplectic Howe duality using two new and independent combinatorial methods: via determinantal formulae on the one hand, and via (bi)crystals on the other hand. The first approach allows us to establish a generalised version where weight multiplicities are replaced by branching coefficients. In turn, this generalised Howe duality is used to prove the injectivity of induction for Levi branchings as previously conjectured by the last two authors.
Let g be a complex semi-simple Lie algebra and g be a semisimple subalgebra of g. Consider the branching problem of decomposing the simple g-representations V as a sum of simple grepresentations V. When g = g x g, it is the tensor product decomposition. The multiplicity space Mult(V, V) satisfies V = $\oplus$ V Mult(V, V) $\otimes$ V, where the sum runs over the isomorphism classes of simple g-representations. In the case when g is spherical of minimal rank, we describe Mult(V, V) as the intersection of kernels of powers of root operators in some weight space of the dual space V * of V. When g…
In this paper we study the sp(2m)-invariant Dirac operator Ds which acts on symplectic spinors, from an orthogonal point of view. By this we mean that we will focus on the subalgebra so(m), as this will allow us to derive branching rules for the space of 1-homogeneous polynomial solutions for the operator Ds (hence generalising the classical Fischer decomposition in harmonic analysis for a vector variable in Rm). To arrive at this result we use techniques from representation theory, including the transvector algebra Z(sp(4),so(4)) and tensor products of Verma modules.
The symplectic group branching algebra, B, is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of Sp(2n-2,C) in each irreducible representation of Sp(2n,C). By describing on B an ASL structure, we construct an explicit standard monomial basis of B consisting of Sp(2n-2,C) highest weight vectors. Moreover, B is known to carry a canonical action of the n-fold product SL(2) \times ... \times SL(2), and we show that the standard monomial basis is the unique (up to scalar) weight basis associated to this representation. Finally, using the theory of Hibi alg…
Consider the restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a Lie group $G$ to its subgroup $H$. Kirillov's revolutionary idea on the orbit method suggests that the multiplicity of an irreducible $H$-module $ν$ occurring in the restriction $π|_H$ could be read from the coadjoint action of $H$ on $O^G \cap pr^{-1}(O^H)$ provided $π$ and $ν$ are "geometric quantizations" of a $G$-coadjoint orbit $O^G$ and an $H$-coadjoint orbit $O^H$,respectively, where $pr: \sqrt{-1} g^{\ast} \to \sqrt{-1} h^{\ast}$ is the projection dual to the inclusion $h \subset g$ of Lie algebras. Such results…
Coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces of compact Lie groups are important examples of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian groups actions. Constructing action-angle variables on these spaces is a challenging task. A fundamental result in the field is the Guillemin-Sternberg construction of Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems for the groups $K=U(n), SO(n)$. Extending these results to groups of other types is one of the goals of this paper. Partial tropicalizations are Poisson spaces with constant Poisson bracket built using techniques of Poisson-Lie theory and the geometric crystals of …
For every genuine irreducible admissible smooth representation $π$ of the metaplectic group $\widetilde{\Sp}(2n)$ over a p-adic field, and every smooth oscillator representation $ω_ψ$ of $\widetilde{\Sp}(2n)$, we prove that the tensor product $π\otimes ω_ψ$ is multiplicity free as a smooth representation of the symplectic group $\Sp(2n)$. Similar results are proved for general linear groups and unitary groups.
A (quasi-)Hamiltonian manifold is called multiplicity free if all of its symplectic reductions are 0-dimensional. In this paper, we classify multiplicity free Hamiltonian actions for (twisted) loop groups or, equivalently, multiplicity free (twisted) quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds for simply connected compact Lie groups. As a result we recover old and find new examples of these structures.
Let $G$ be a complex simple Lie group, and let $U \subseteq G$ be a maximal compact subgroup. Assume that $G$ admits a homogenous space $X=G/Q=U/K$ which is a compact Hermitian symmetric space. Let $\mathscr{L} \rightarrow X$ be the ample line bundle which generates the Picard group of $X$. In this paper we study the restrictions to $K$ of the family $(H^0(X, \mathscr{L}^k))_{k \in \N}$ of irreducible $G$-representations. We describe explicitly the moment polytopes for the moment maps $X \rightarrow \fk^*$ associated to positive integer multiples of the Kostant-Kirillov symplectic form on $X$,…
We study polar representations in the sense of Dadok and Kac which are symplectic. We show that such representations are coisotropic and use this fact to give a classification. We also study their moment maps and prove that they separate closed orbits. Our work can also be seen as a specialization of some of the results of Knop on multiplicity free symplectic representations to the polar case.
In this paper we consider the restriction of a unitary irreducible representation of type $A_{\mathfrak q}(λ)$ of $GL(4,{\mathbb R})$ to reductive subgroups $H$ which are the fixpoint sets of an involution. We obtain a formula for the restriction to the symplectic group and to $GL(2,{\mathbb C})$, and as an application we construct in the last section some representations in the cuspidal spectrum of the symplectic and the complex general linear group. In addition to working directly with the cohmologically induced module to obtain the branching law, we also introduce the useful concept of pseu…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive subgroup of a complex connected reductive group $\hat{G}$. We are interested in the branching problem. Fix maximal tori and Borel subgroups of $G$ and $\hat G$. Consider the cone $lr(G,\hat G)$ generated by the pairs $(ν,\hat nu)$ of dominant characters such that $V_ν^*$ is a submodule of $V_{\hat nu}$. It is known that $lr(G,\hat G)$ is a closed convex polyhedral cone. In this work, we show that every regular face of $lr(G,\hat G)$ gives rise to a {\it reduction rule} for multiplicities. More precisely, we prove that for $(ν,\hat nu)$ on such a face, the multi…
The irreducible decomposition of a unitary representation often contains continuous spectrum when restricted to a non-compact subgroup. The author singles out a nice class of branching problems where each irreducible summand occurs discretely with finite multiplicity (admissible restrictions). Basic theory and new perspectives of admissible restrictions are presented from both analytic and algebraic view points. We also discuss some applications of admissible restrictions to modular varieties and $L^p$-harmonic analysis.
On restriction to the maximal compact subgroup $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$, an unramified principal series representation of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,F)$ decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional irreducibles each appearing with finite multiplicity. We describe a coarser decomposition into components which, although reducible in general, capture the equivalences between the irreducible constituents.
We give an explicit combinatorial description of the multiplicity as well as the Hilbert function of the tangent cone at any point on a Schubert variety in the symplectic Grassmannian.
If $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, $H$ is a symmetric subgroup, and $π$ is a discrete series representation of $G$, the authors give a condition on the pair $(G,H)$ which guarantees that the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ contains each irreducible representation of $H$ with finite multiplicity. In addition, if $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, and $H\subset G$ is a closed, reductive subgroup of Harish-Chandra class, the authors show that the multiplicity function in the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ is constant along `continuous para…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedian local field of characteristic zero and $E/F$ a quadratic extension. The aim of the present article is to study the multiplicity of an irreducible admissible representation of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$ occurring in an irreducible admissible genuine representation of non-trivial two fold covering $\widetilde{\rm GL}_2(E)$ of ${\rm GL}_2(E)$.
We study natural quantizations of branching coefficients corresponding to the restrictions of the classical Lie groups to their Levi subgroups. We show that they admit a stable limit which can be regarded as a $q$-analogue of a tensor product multiplicity. According to a conjecture by Shimozono, the stable one-dimensional sum for nonexceptional affine crystals are expected to occur as special cases of these $q$-analogues.
In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.
The restriction of a supercuspidal representation of SL_2(k), for k a local nonarchimedean field, to a maximal compact subgroup decomposes as a multiplicity-free direct sum of irreducible representations. We explicitly describe this decomposition in the case that the residual characteristic is odd, and determine how the spectrum of this decomposition varies as a function of the parameters describing the supercuspidal representation.
We study general properties of the restriction of the representations of the finite complex reflection groups $G(de,e,r+1)$ to their maximal parabolic subgroups of type $G(de,e,r)$, and focus notably on the multiplicity of components. In combinatorial terms, this amounts to the following question : which symmetries arise or disappear when one changes (exactly) one pearl in a combinatorial necklace ?
We study algebras encoding stable range branching rules for the pairs of complex classical groups of the same type in the context of toric degenerations of spherical varieties. By lifting affine semigroup algebras constructed from combinatorial data of branching multiplicities, we obtain algebras having highest weight vectors in multiplicity spaces as their standard monomial type bases. In particular, we identify a family of distributive lattices and their associated Hibi algebras which can uniformly describe the stable range branching algebras for all the pairs we consider.
Representation theory of $p$-adic groups naturally comes in the study of automorphic forms and one way to understand representations of a group is by restricting to its nice subgroups. D. Prasad studied the restriction for pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), D_{F}^{\times})$ where $E/F$ is a quadratic equation and $D_{F}$ is the unique quaternion division algebra, and $D_{F}^{\times} \hookrightarrow {\rm GL}_{2}(E)$. Prasad proved a multiplicity one result and a `dichotomy' relating the restriction for the pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_…
The descent set of an oscillating (or up-down) tableau is introduced. This descent set plays the same role in the representation theory of the symplectic groups as the descent set of a standard tableau plays in the representation theory of the general linear groups. In particular, we show that the descent set is preserved by Sundaram's correspondence. This gives a direct combinatorial interpretation of the branching rules for the defining representations of the symplectic groups; equivalently, for the Frobenius character of the action of a symmetric group on an isotypic subspace in a tensor po…
We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an…
We use Gelfand-Tsetlin diagrams to write down the weight multiplicity function for the Lie algebra sl_k(C) (type A_{k-1}) as a single partition function. This allows us to apply known results about partition functions to derive interesting properties of the weight diagrams. We relate this description to that of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure from symplectic geometry, which gives a large-scale limit way to look at multiplicity diagrams. We also provide an explanation for why the weight polynomials in the boundary regions of the weight diagrams exhibit a number of linear factors. Using symplect…
Let G be a complex symplectic group. We introduce a G x (C ^x) ^{l + 1}-variety N_{l}, which we call the l-exotic nilpotent cone. Then, we realize the Hecke algebra H of type C_n ^(1) with three parameters via equivariant algebraic K-theory in terms of the geometry of N_2. This enables us to establish a Deligne-Langlands type classification of "non-critical" simple H-modules. As applications, we present a character formula and multiplicity formulas of H-modules.
We use the theory of skew duality to show that decomposing the tensor product of $k$ irreducible representations of the symplectic group $Sp_{2m} = Sp_{2m}(C)$ is equivalent to branching from $Sp_{2n}$ to $Sp_{2n_1}\times\cdots\times Sp_{2n_k}$ where $n, n_1,\ldots, n_k$ are positive integers such that $n = n_1+\cdots+n_k$ and the $n_j$'s depend on $m$ as well as the representations in the tensor product. Using this result and a work of J. Lepowsky, we obtain a skew Pieri rule for $Sp_{2m}$, i.e., a description of the irreducible decomposition of the tensor product of an irreducible representa…
In \cite{JZ1}, D. Jiang and L. Zhang proposed a conjecture which related the wavefront sets and the descent method in the local fields case. Recently, in \cite{JLZ}, they and D. Liu define the arithmetic wavefront set of certain irreducible admissible representation $π$ of a classical group $G(k)$ defined over local field $k$, which is a subset of $k$-rational nilpotent orbits of the Lie algebra of $G(k)$, by the arithmetic structures of the enhanced L-parameter of $π$. These arithmetic structures are based on the rationality of the local Langlands correspondence and the local Gan-Gross-Prasad…
We discuss recent developments on branching problems of irreducible unitary representations $π$ of real reductive groups when restricted to reductive subgroups. Highlighting the case where the underlying $(g,K)$-modules of $π$ are isomorphic to Zuckerman's derived functor modules $A_q(λ)$, we show various and rich features of branching laws such as infinite multiplicities, irreducible restrictions, multiplicity-free restrictions, and discrete decomposable restrictions. We also formulate a number of conjectures.
For a connected, noncompact matrix simple Lie group $G$ so that a maximal compact subgroup $K$ has three dimensional simple ideal, in this note we analyze the admissibility of the restriction of irreducible square integrable representations for the ambient group when they are restricted to certain subgroups that contains the three dimensional ideal. In this setting we provide a formula for the multiplicity of the irreducible factors. Also, for general $G$ such that $G/K$ is an Hermitian $G$-manifold we give a necessary and sufficient condition so that a square integrable representations of the…
The complex analytic methods have found a wide range of applications in the study of multiplicity-free representations. This article discusses, in particular, its applications to the question of restricting highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs. We present a number of multiplicity-free branching theorems that include the multiplicity-free property of some of known results such as the Clebsh--Gordan--Pieri formula for tensor products, the Plancherel theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces (also for line bundle cases), the Hua--Kostant--Schmid $K$-type formula, and the …
The restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a real reductive group $G$ to a reductive subgroup $H$ decomposes into a direct integral of irreducible unitary representations $τ$ of $H$ with multiplicities $m(π,τ)\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$. We show that on the smooth vectors of $π$, the direct integral is pointwise defined. This implies that $m(π,τ)$ is bounded above by the dimension of the space $\operatorname{Hom}_H(π^\infty|_H,τ^\infty)$ of intertwining operators between the smooth vectors, also called symmetry breaking operators, and provides a precise relation between t…
We prove that a finite group $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ if, and only if, every irreducible character of $G$ appearing in the permutation character $({\bf 1}_P)^G$ with multiplicity coprime to $p$ has degree coprime to $p$. This confirms a prediction by Malle and Navarro from 2012. Our proof of the above result depends on a reduction to simple groups and ultimately on a combinatorial analysis of the properties of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.
Frobenius reciprocity asserts that induction from a subgroup and restriction to it are adjoint functors in categories of unitary G-modules. In the 1980s, Guillemin and Sternberg established a parallel property of Hamiltonian G-spaces, which (as we show) unfortunately fails to mirror the situation where more than one G-module "quantizes" a given Hamiltonian G-space. This paper offers evidence that the situation is remedied by working in the category of *prequantum* G-spaces, where this ambiguity disappears; there, we define induction and multiplicity spaces, and establish Frobenius reciprocity …
Let $G$ be a symplectic or special orthogonal group, let $H$ be a connected reductive subgroup of $G$, and let $X$ be a flag variety of $G$. We classify all triples $(G,H,X)$ such that the natural action of $H$ on $X$ is spherical. For each of these triples, we determine the restrictions to $H$ of all irreducible representations of $G$ realized in spaces of sections of homogeneous line bundles on $X$.
We say a representation V of a group G has stability if its multiplicities m^{G}_{V}(λ) is dependent only on some equivalence class of λfor a sufficiently large parameter λ. In this paper, we prove that the restriction of a holomorphic discrete series representation with respect to any holomorphic symmetric pairs has stability. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on multiplicity-freeness of the branching laws in this setting. This condition is same as the sufficient condition given by the theory of visible actions. We prove a general theorem before we show the stabilit…
We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of compact Gelfand pairs. First, we develop a criterion for a direct limit representation to be a multiplicity--free discrete direct sum of irreducible representations. Then we look at direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of compact riemannian symmetric spaces, where we combine our criterion with the Cartan--Helgason Theorem to show in general that the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on a certain function space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. That method is not applicable for direct limits of nonsymmetric …
We consider the quantum symmetric pair $(\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{su}(3)), \mathcal{B})$ where $\mathcal{B}$ is a right coideal subalgebra. We prove that all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathcal{B}$ are weight representations and are characterised by their highest weight and dimension. We show that the restriction of a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{su}(3))$ to $\mathcal{B}$ decomposes multiplicity free into irreducible representations of $\mathcal{B}$. Furthermore we give explicit expressions for the highest weight vectors in th…

Let $\mathfrak{o}$ be the ring of integers of a non-archimedean local field with the maximal ideal $\wp$ and the finite residue field of characteristic $p.$ Let $\mathbf{G}$ be the General Linear or Special Linear group with entries from the finite quotients $\mathfrak{o}/\wp^\ell$ of $\mathfrak{o}$ and $\mathbf{U}$ be the subgroup of $\mathbf{G}$ consisting of upper triangular unipotent matrices. We prove that the induced representation $\mathrm{Ind}^{\mathbf{G}}_{\mathbf{U}}(θ)$ of $\mathbf{G}$ obtained from a ${\it non-degenerate}$ character $θ$ of $\mathbf{U}$ is multiplicity free for all …
