We use Gelfand-Tsetlin diagrams to write down the weight multiplicity function for the Lie algebra sl_k(C) (type A_{k-1}) as a single partition function. This allows us to apply known results about partition functions to derive interesting properties of the weight diagrams. We relate this description to that of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure from symplectic geometry, which gives a large-scale limit way to look at multiplicity diagrams. We also provide an explanation for why the weight polynomials in the boundary regions of the weight diagrams exhibit a number of linear factors. Using symplectic geometry, we prove that the partition of the permutahedron into domains of polynomiality of the Duistermaat-Heckman function is the same as that for the weight multiplicity function, and give an elementary proof of this for sl_4(C) (A_3).
Wilf's Sixth Unsolved Problem asks for any interesting properties of the set of partitions of integers for which the (nonzero) multiplicities of the parts are all different. We refer to these as \emph{Wilf partitions}. Using $f(n)$ to denote the number of Wilf partitions, we establish lead-order asymptotics for $\ln{f(n)}$.
The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities …
We consider a refinement of the partition function of graph homomorphisms and present a quasi-polynomial algorithm to compute it in a certain domain. As a corollary, we obtain quasi-polynomial algorithms for computing partition functions for independent sets, perfect matchings, Hamiltonian cycles and dense subgraphs in graphs as well as for graph colorings. This allows us to tell apart in quasi-polynomial time graphs that are sufficiently far from having a structure of a given type (i.e., independent set of a given size, Hamiltonian cycle, etc.) from graphs that have sufficiently many structur…
We show that the number of partitions of n with alternating sum k such that the multiplicity of each part is bounded by 2m+1 equals the number of partitions of n with k odd parts such that the multiplicity of each even part is bounded by m. The first proof relies on two formulas with two parameters that are related to the four-parameter formulas of Boulet. We also give a combinatorial proof of this result by using Sylvester's bijection, which implies a stronger partition theorem. For m=0, our result reduces to Bessenrodt's refinement of Euler's Theorem. If the alternating sum and the number of…
Given a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. For $ξ$ (a weight of $\mathfrak{g}$), the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by $\wp_q(ξ)=\sum c_i q^i$ where $c_i$ is the number of ways $ξ$ can be written as a sum of $i$ positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this way, the evaluation of Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula at $q = 1$ recovers the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight represen…
Kostka-Foulkes polynomials are Lusztig's $q$-analogues of weight multiplicities for irreducible representations of semisimple Lie algebras. It has long been known that these polynomials have non-negative coefficients. A statistic on semistandard Young tableaux with partition content, called \textit{charge}, was used to give a combinatorial formula exhibiting this fact in type $A$. Defining a charge statistic beyond type $A$ has been a long-standing problem. Here, we take a completely new approach based on the definition of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials as an alternating sum over Kostant partition…
This document is a companion for the Maple program : Discrete series and K-types for U(p,q) available on:http://www.math.jussieu.fr/~vergne We explain an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of an irreducible representation of U(p)x U(q) in a discrete series of U(p,q). It is based on Blattner's formula. We recall the general mathematical background to compute Kostant partition functions via multidimensional residues, and we outline our algorithm. We also point out some properties of the piecewise polynomial functions describing multiplicities based on Paradan's results.
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-DeLoera-Vergne on vector partition functions, to Kostant and Steinberg formulas, in the case of $A_r$. We therefore get a fast {\sc Maple} program that computes for $A_r$: the multiplicity $c_{λ,μ}$ of the weight $μ$ in the representation $V(λ)$ of highest weight $λ$; the multiplicity $c_{λ,μ,ν}$ of the representation $V(ν)$ in $V(λ)\otimes V(μ)$. The computation also gives the locally polynomial functions $c_{λ,μ}$ and $c_{λ,μ,ν}$.
Recently, Hirschhorn and the first author considered the parity of the function $a(n)$ which counts the number of integer partitions of $n$ wherein each part appears with odd multiplicity. They derived an effective characterization of the parity of $a(2m)$ based solely on properties of $m.$ In this note, we quickly reprove their result, and then extend it to an explicit characterization of the parity of $a(n)$ for all $n\not\equiv 7 \pmod{8}.$ We also exhibit some infinite families of congruences modulo 2 which follow from these characterizations. We conclude by discussing the case $n\equiv 7 …
We discuss some applications of signature quantization to the representation theory of compact Lie groups. In particular, we prove signature analogues of the Kostant formula for weight multiplicities and the Steinberg formula for tensor product multiplicities. Using symmetric functions, we also find, for type A, analogues of the Weyl branching rule and the Gelfand-Tsetlin theorem. These analogues involve a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function. We show that in type A, this q-analogue is polynomial in the relative interior of the cells of a complex of cones. This chamber complex can be t…
Wilf partitions are partitions of an integer $n$ in which all nonzero multiplicities are distinct. On his webpage, the late Herbert Wilf posed the problem to find "any interesting theorems" about the number f(n) of those partitions. Recently, Fill, Janson and Ward (and independently Kane and Rhoades) determined an asymptotic formula for $\log f(n)$. Since the original motivation for studying Wilf partitions was the fact that the operation that interchanges part sizes and multiplicities is an involution on the set of Wilf partitions, they mentioned as an open problem to determine a similar asym…
For $\ell \geq 1$ and $k \geq 2$, we consider certain admissible sequences of $k-1$ lattice paths in a colored $\ell \times \ell$ square. We show that the number of such admissible sequences of lattice paths is given by the sum of squares of the number of standard Young tableaux of partitions of $\ell$ with height $\leq k$, which is also the number of $(k+1)k\cdots21$-avoiding permutations of $\{1, 2, \ldots, \ell\}$. Finally, we apply this result to the representation theory of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{sl}(n)$ and show that this quantity gives the multiplicity of certain maximal domin…
By bivariate irreducible representations of ${\rm Sp}(2r)$, we mean irreducible representations with highest weights containing at most two nonzero entries, using the usual identification of dominant weights for complex symplectic Lie algebras and their corresponding Lie groups as $r$-tuples in decreasing non-negative integers. This paper has two aims. The first aim is to provide a formula for the weight mulitplicities of said representations, which is easily computable. The second aim is to present these weight multiplicities using elementary means. The formula for these weight multiplicities…
Let A and M be nonempty sets of positive integers. A partition of the positive integer n with parts in A and multiplicities in M is a representation of n in the form n = \sum_{a\in A} m_a a, where m_a is in M U {0} for all a in A, and m_a is in M for only finitely many a. Denote by p_{A,M}(n) the number of partitions of n with parts in A and multiplicities in M. It is proved that there exist infinite sets A and M of positive integers whose partition function p_{A,M} has weakly superpolynomial but not superpolynomial growth. The counting function of the set A is A(x) = \sum_{a \in A, a\leq x} 1…
If $[λ(j)]$ is a multipartition of the positive integer $n$ (a sequence of partitions with total size $n$), and $μ$ is a partition of $n$, we study the number $K_{[λ(j)]μ}$ of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $[λ(j)]$ and total weight $μ$. We show that the numbers $K_{[λ(j)] μ}$ occur naturally as the multiplicities in certain permutation representations of wreath products. The main result is a set of conditions on $[λ(j)]$ and $μ$ which are equivalent to $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$, generalizing a theorem of Berenshte\uın and Zelevinski\uı. We also show that the questions of whether $…
We study the rate of growth of $p(n,S,M)$, the number of partitions of $n$ whose parts all belong to $S$ and whose multiplicities all belong to $M$, where $S$ (resp. $M$) are given infinite sets of positive (resp. nonnegative) integers. We show that if $M$ is all nonnegative integers then $p(n,S,M)$ cannot be of only polynomial growth, and that no sharper statement can be made. We ask: if $p(n,S,M)>0$ for all large enough $n$, can $p(n,S,M)$ be of polynomial growth in $n$?
Given a graph $G$, one may ask: "What sets of eigenvalues are possible over all weighted adjacency matrices of $G$?" (The weight of an edge is positive or negative, while the diagonal entries can be any real numbers.) This is known as the Inverse Eigenvalue Problem for graphs (IEP-$G$). A mild relaxation of this question considers the multiplicity list instead of the exact eigenvalues themselves. That is, given a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and an ordered partition $\mathbf{m}= (m_1, \ldots, m_\ell)$ of $n$, is there a weighted adjacency matrix where the $i$-th distinct eigenvalue has multiplici…
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-Beck-Cochet-Vergne on vector partition function, to Kostant's and Steinberg's formulae, for classical Lie algebras $A\_r$, $B\_r$, $C\_r$, $D\_r$. We therefore get efficient {\tt Maple} programs that compute for these Lie algebras: the multiplicity of a weight in an irreducible finite-dimensional representation; the decomposition coefficients of the tensor product of two irreducible finite-dimensional representations. These programs can also calculate associated Ehrhart quasipolynomials.
We study the Kronecker coefficients $g_{λ, μ, ν}$ via a formula that was described by Mishna, Rosas, and Sundaram, in which the coefficients are expressed as a signed sum of vector partition function evaluations. In particular, we use this formula to determine formulas to evaluate, bound, and estimate $g_{λ, μ, ν}$ in terms of the lengths of the partitions $λ, μ$, and $ν$. We describe a computational tool to compute Kronecker coefficients $g_{λ, μ, ν}$ with $\ell(μ) \leq 2,\ \ell(ν) \leq 4,\ \ell(λ) \leq 8$. We present a set of new vanishing conditions for the Kronecker coefficients by relatin…
The algebra of so-called shifted symmetric functions on partitions has the property that for all elements a certain generating series, called the $q$-bracket, is a quasimodular form. More generally, if a graded algebra $A$ of functions on partitions has the property that the $q$-bracket of every element is a quasimodular form of the same weight, we call $A$ a quasimodular algebra. We introduce a new quasimodular algebra consisting of symmetric polynomials in the part sizes and multiplicities.
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $F_λ$ are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials and can be viewed as partition functions in $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models. We obtain a refined Littlewood identity expressing a weighted sum of $F_λ$'s over all partitions $λ$ with even multiplicities as a certain Pfaffian. This Pfaffian can be derived as a partition function of the six vertex model in a triangle with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof is based on the Yang-Baxter equation…
For two sets $A$ and $M$ of positive integers and for a positive integer $n$, let $p(n,A,M)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with parts in $A$ and multiplicities in $M$, that is, the number of representations of $n$ in the form $n=\sum_{a \in A} m_a a$ where $m_a \in M \cup {0}$ for all $a$, and all numbers $m_a$ but finitely many are 0. It is shown that there are infinite sets $A$ and $M$ so that $p(n,A,M)=1$ for every positive integer $n$. This settles (in a strong form) a problem of Canfield and Wilf. It is also shown that there is an infinite set $M$ and constants $c$ and $n_0$ so t…
A vector space partition $\mathcal{P}$ of the projective space $\operatorname{PG}(v-1,q)$ is a set of subspaces in $\operatorname{PG}(v-1,q)$ which partitions the set of points. We say that a vector space partition $\mathcal{P}$ has type $(v-1)^{m_{v-1}} \dots 2^{m_2}1^{m_1}$ if precisely $m_i$ of its elements have dimension $i$, where $1\le i\le v-1$. Here we determine all possible types of vector space partitions in $\operatorname{PG}(7,2)$.
Kostant's partition function is a vector partition function that counts the number of ways one can express a weight of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as a nonnegative integral linear combination of the positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. Multiplex juggling sequences are generalizations of juggling sequences that specify an initial and terminal configuration of balls and allow for multiple balls at any particular discrete height. Magic multiplex juggling sequences generalize further to include magic balls, which cancel with standard balls when they meet at the same height. In this paper, we establi…
Based on discrete truncated powers, the beautiful Popoviciu's formulation for restricted integer partition function is generalized. An explicit formulation for two dimensional multivariate truncated power functions is presented. Therefore, a simplified explicit formulation for two dimensional vector partition functions is given. Moreover, the generalized Frobenius problem is also discussed.
A {\it vector space partition} is here a collection $\mathcal P$ of subspaces of a finite vector space $V(n,q)$, of dimension $n$ over a finite field with $q$ elements, with the property that every non zero vector is contained in a unique member of $\mathcal P$. Vector space partitions relates to finite projective planes, design theory and error correcting codes. In the first part of the talk I will discuss some relations between vector space partitions and other branches of mathematics. The other part of the talk contains a survey of known results on the type of a vector space partition, more…
The ring of symmetric functions carries the structure of a Hopf algebra. When computing the coproduct of complete symmetric functions $h_λ$ one arrives at weighted sums over reverse plane partitions (RPP) involving binomial coefficients. Employing the action of the extended affine symmetric group at fixed level $n$ we generalise these weighted sums to cylindric RPP and define cylindric complete symmetric functions. The latter are shown to be $h$-positive, that is, their expansions coefficients in the basis of complete symmetric functions are non-negative integers. We state an explicit formula …
Some new necessary conditions for the existence of vector space partitions are derived. They are applied to the problem of finding the maximum number of spaces of dimension t in a vector space partition of V(2t,q) that contains m_d spaces of dimension d, where t/2<d<t, and also spaces of other dimensions. It is also discussed how this problem is related to maximal partial t-spreads in V(2t,q). We also give a lower bound for the number of spaces in a vector space partition and verify that this bound is tight.
We prove identities generating higher dimensional vector partitions. We derive theorems for integer lattice points in the 2D first quadrant, then generalize the approach to find 3D and $n$-space lattice point vector region extensions. We also state combinatorial identities for Visible Point Vectors in 2D up to 5D and $n$D first hyperquadrant and hyperpyramid lattices. 2D and 3D theorems for vector partitions with binary components are also derived.
This paper introduces a new and simple statistic on noncrossing partitions that expresses each coordinate of the toric $h$-vector of a cubical complex, written in the basis of the Adin $h$-vector entries, as the total weight of all noncrossing partitions. The same model may also be used to obtain a very simple combinatorial interpretation of the contribution of a cubical shelling component to the toric $h$-vector. In this model, a strengthening of the symmetry expressed by the Dehn-Sommerville equations may be derived from the self-duality of the noncrossing partition lattice, exhibited by the…
A vector space partition of $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is a collection of subspaces such that every non-zero vector is contained in a unique element. We improve a lower bound of Heden, in a subcase, on the number of elements of the smallest occurring dimension in a vector space partition. To this end, we introduce the notion of $q^r$-divisible sets of $k$-subspaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^v$. By geometric arguments we obtain non-existence results for these objects, which then imply the improved result of Heden.
Associated to a graph $G$ is a set $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of all real-valued symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal entries are nonzero precisely when the corresponding vertices of the graph are adjacent, and the diagonal entries are free to be chosen. If $G$ has $n$ vertices, then the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of any matrix in $\mathcal{S}(G)$ partition $n$; this is called a multiplicity partition. We study graphs for which a multiplicity partition with only two integers is possible. The graphs $G$ for which there is a matrix in $\mathcal{S}(G)$ with partitions $[n-2,2]$ have been characteri…
We investigate infinite versions of vector and affine space partition results, and thus obtain examples and a counterexample for a partition problem for relational structures. In particular we provide two (related) examples of an age indivisible relational structure which is not weakly indivisible.
In this note, we give a new necessary condition for the existence of non-trivial partitions of a finite vector space. Precisely, we prove that, if V is a finite vector space over a field of order q, then the number of the subspaces of minimum dimension t of a non-trivial partition of V is greater than or equal to q+t. Moreover, we give some extensions of a well known Beutelspacher-Heden's result on existence of T-partitions.
A vector space partition $\mathcal{P}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is a set of subspaces such that every $1$-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is contained in exactly one element of $\mathcal{P}$. Replacing "every point" by "every $t$-dimensional subspace", we generalize this notion to vector space $t$-partitions and study their properties. There is a close connection to subspace codes and some problems are even interesting and unsolved for the set case $q=1$.
Let $d, r \in \N$, $\|\cdot\|$ any norm on $\R^d$ and $B$ denote the unit ball with respect to this norm. We show that any sequence $v_1,v_2,...$ of vectors in $B$ can be partitioned into $r$ subsequences $V_1, ..., V_r$ in a balanced manner with respect to the partial sums: For all $n \in \N$, $\ell \le r$, we have $\|\sum_{i \le k, v_i \in V_\ell} v_i - \tfrac 1r \sum_{i \le k} v_i\| \le 2.0005 d$. A similar bound holds for partitioning sequences of vector sets. Both results extend an earlier one of Bárány and Grinberg (1981) to partitions in arbitrarily many classes.
We investigate the possibilities to calculate vector partition functions by means of iterated partial fraction decomposition, as suggested by Beck (2004). Particularly, for an important type of families of rational functions, we describe an algorithm to compute the numerators in their partial fraction decomposition "formally," i.e., as a formal expression in the parameter. We also analyze the type of generalized rational functions that appear during the execution of an algorithm based on iterated partial fraction decomposition and explain how to handle these objects.
Following the ideas of L. Carlitz we introduce a generalization of the Bernoulli and Eulerian polynomials of higher order to vectorial index and argument. These polynomials are used for computation of the vector partition function $W({\bf s},{\bf D})$, i.e., a number of integer solutions to a linear system ${\bf x} \ge 0, {\bf D x} = {\bf s}$. It is shown that $W({\bf s},{\bf D})$ can be expressed through the vector Bernoulli polynomials of higher order.
This is the first of two papers on partition functions and the index theory of transversally elliptic operators. In this paper we only discuss algebraic and combinatorial issues related to partition functions. The applications to index theory will appear in a subsequent paper.
Given a finite set of vectors spanning a lattice and lying in a halfspace of a real vector space, to each vector $a$ in this vector space one can associate a polytope consisting of nonnegative linear combinations of the vectors in the set which sum up to $a$. This polytope is called the partition polytope of $a$. If $a$ is integral, this polytope contains a finite set of lattice points corresponding to nonnegative integral linear combinations. The partition polytope associated to an integral $a$ is a rational convex polytope, and any rational convex polytope can be realized canonically as a pa…
A case-free proof is given that the entries of the $h$-vector of the cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$, associated by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky to a finite root system $Φ$, count elements of the lattice $\nc$ of noncrossing partitions of corresponding type by rank. Similar interpretations for the $h$-vector of the positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ are provided. The proof utilizes the appearance of the complex $Δ(Φ)$ in the context of the lattice $\nc$, in recent work of two of the authors, as well as an explicit shelling of $Δ(Φ)$.
We define a generalized vector partition function and derive an identity for generating series of such functions associated with solutions of basic recurrence relation of combinatorial analysis. As a consequence, we obtain the generating function of the number of generalized lattice paths and a new version of Chaundy-Bullard identity for the vector partition function.
It is known that partial spreads is a class of bent partitions. In \cite{AM2022Be,MP2021Be}, two classes of bent partitions whose forms are similar to partial spreads were presented. In \cite{AKM2022Ge}, more bent partitions $Γ_{1}, Γ_{2}, Γ_{1}^{\bullet}, Γ_{2}^{\bullet}, Θ_{1}, Θ_{2}$ were presented from (pre)semifields, including the bent partitions given in \cite{AM2022Be,MP2021Be}. In this paper, we investigate the relations between bent partitions and vectorial dual-bent functions. For any prime $p$, we show that one can generate certain bent partitions (called bent partitions satisfying…
A result of Rosenthal says that for every $q>1$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$ there is $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every sequence of $N$ distinct positive numbers contains, after a suitable translation and possible multiplication by $-1$, a subsequence $a_1,\ldots,a_n$ that is either $q$-increasing (that is, $a_{i+1}>qa_i$ for all $i$) or $1/q$-decreasing ($a_{i+1}<a_i/q$ for all $i$). One of our main theorems extends this result to vector sequences. This theorem is then used to prove the universality theorem for Tverberg partitions which says that, for every $d$ and $r$, every long enough sequence …
The theory of q-analogs develops many combinatorial formulas for finite vector spaces over a finite field with q elements--all in analogy with formulas for finite sets (which are the special case of q=1). A direct-sum decomposition of a finite vector space is the vector space analogue of a set partition. This paper develops the formulas for the number of direct-sum decompositions that are the q-analogs of the formulas for: (1) the number of set partitions with a given number partition signature; (2) the number of set partitions of an n-element set with m blocks (the Stirling numbers of the sec…
Ferrers graphs and tables of partitions are treated as vectors. Matrix operations are used for simple proofs of identities concerning partitions. Interpreting partitions as vectors gives a possibility to generalize partitions on negative numbers. Partitions are then tabulated into lattices and some properties of these lattices are studied. There appears a new identity counting Ferrers graphs packed consecutively into isoscele form. The lattices form the base for tabulating combinatorial identities.
We consider the poset of vector partitions of $[n]$ into $s$ components, denoted $Π_{n,s}$, which was first defined by Stanley in 1978. In 1986, Sagan showed that this poset is CL-shellable, and hence has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres of dimension $(n-2)$. We extend on this result to show that $Π_{n,s}$ is edge-lexicographic shellable. We then use this edge-labeling to find a recursive expression for the number of spheres, and show that when $s=1$ the number of spheres is equal to the number of complete non-ambiguous trees, first defined in 2014 by Aval, Boussicault, Bouvel and Silim…
We consider the {\em vector partition problem}, where $n$ agents, each with a $d$-dimensional attribute vector, are to be partitioned into $p$ parts so as to minimize cost which is a given function on the sums of attribute vectors in each part. The problem has applications in a variety of areas including clustering, logistics and health care. We consider the complexity and parameterized complexity of the problem under various assumptions on the natural parameters $p,d,a,t$ of the problem where $a$ is the maximum absolute value of any attribute and $t$ is the number of agent types, and raise so…
Constant-dimension codes with the maximum possible minimum distance have been studied under the name of partial spreads in Finite Geometry for several decades. Not surprisingly, for this subclass typically the sharpest bounds on the maximal code size are known. The seminal works of Beutelspacher and Drake \& Freeman on partial spreads date back to 1975, and 1979, respectively. From then until recently, there was almost no progress besides some computer-based constructions and classifications. It turns out that vector space partitions provide the appropriate theoretical framework and can be use…
If a pure simplicial complex is partitionable, then its $h$-vector has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of any partitioning of the complex. Given a non-partitionable complex $Δ$, we construct a complex $Γ\supseteq Δ$ of the same dimension such that both $Γ$ and the relative complex $(Γ,Δ)$ are partitionable. This allows us to rewrite the $h$-vector of any pure simplicial complex as the difference of two $h$-vectors of partitionable complexes, giving an analogous interpretation of the $h$-vector of a non-partitionable complex. By contrast, for a given complex $Δ$ it is not always possibl…
