Ferrers graphs and tables of partitions are treated as vectors. Matrix operations are used for simple proofs of identities concerning partitions. Interpreting partitions as vectors gives a possibility to generalize partitions on negative numbers. Partitions are then tabulated into lattices and some properties of these lattices are studied. There appears a new identity counting Ferrers graphs packed consecutively into isoscele form. The lattices form the base for tabulating combinatorial identities.
We look at the rank generating function $G_λ$ of partitions inside the Ferrers diagram of some partition $λ$, investigated by Stanton in 1990, as well as a closely related problem investigated by Stanley and Zanello in 2013. We show that $G_λ$ is not unimodal for a larger class of 4-part partitions than previously known, and also that if the ratios of parts of $λ$ are close enough to 1 (depending on how many parts $λ$ has), or if the first part is at least half the size of $λ$, then $G_λ$ is unimodal.
We asymptotically analyse the volume-random variables of general, symmetric and cyclically symmetric plane partitions fitting inside a box. We consider the respective symmetry class equipped with the uniform distribution. We also prove area limit laws for two ensembles of Ferrers diagrams. Most of the limit laws are Gaussian.
There is a familiar conjugate for integer partitions: transpose the Ferrers diagram, and a conjugate for integer compositions: transpose a Ferrers-like diagram. Here we propose a conjugate for set partitions and show that it interchanges # singletons and # adjacencies. Its restriction to noncrossing partitions cropped up in a 1972 paper of Kreweras. We also exhibit an analogous pairs of statistics interchanged by the composition conjugate.
In [2] we introduced a new notion of Wilf equivalence of integer partitions and proved that rook equivalence implies Wilf equivalence. In the present paper we prove the converse and thereby establish a new criterion for rook equivalence. We also refine two of the standard criteria for rook equivalence and establish another new one involving what we call \emph{nested sequences of L's}.
We prove that the multiset {(RightArmLength,LeftArmLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells equals the multiset {(RightArmLength,LegLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells, thereby refining a multi-set identity proved by C. Bessenrodt and by Bacher and L. Manivel. Added In revised version: Guo-Niu Han kindly pointed out to us that our main result is contained in reference [B.H] of the present article.
Bliem and Kousidis (arXiv:1109.4624) recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.
We give a correspondence between graphs with a given degree sequence and fillings of Ferrers diagrams by nonnegative integers with prescribed row and column sums. In this setting, k-crossings and k-nestings of the graph become occurrences of the identity and the antiidentity matrices in the filling. We use this to show the equality of the numbers of k-noncrossing and k-nonnesting graphs with a given degree sequence. This generalizes the analogous result for matchings and partition graphs of Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan, and extends results of Klazar to k>2. Moreover, this correspondence re…
We investigate the rank-generating function $F_λ$ of the poset of partitions contained inside a given shifted Ferrers shape $λ$. When $λ$ has four parts, we show that $F_λ$ is unimodal when $λ=\langle n,n-1,n-2,n-3 \rangle$, for any $n\ge 4$, and that unimodality fails for the doubly-indexed, infinite family of partitions of the form $λ=\langle n,n-t,n-2t,n-3t \rangle$, for any given $t\ge 2$ and $n$ large enough with respect to $t$. When $λ$ has $b\le 3$ parts, we show that our rank-generating functions $F_λ$ are all unimodal. However, the situation remains mostly obscure for $b\ge 5$. In gen…
We introduce a new family of hyperplane arrangements inspired by the homogenized Linial arrangement (which was recently introduced by Hetyei), and show that the intersection lattices of these arrangements are isomorphic to the bond lattices of Ferrers graphs. Using recent work of Lazar and Wachs we are able to give combinatorial interpretations of the characteristic polynomials of these arrangements in terms of permutation enumeration. For certain infinite families of these hyperplane arrangements, we are able to give generating function formulas for their characteristic polynomials. To do so,…
A {\em pointed partition} of $n$ is a pair $(λ, v)$ where $λ\vdash n$ and $v$ is a cell in its Ferrers diagram. We construct an involution on pointed partitions of $n$ exchanging "hook length" and "part length". This gives a bijective proof of a recent result of Bessenrodt and Han.
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedra…
Young's lattice $L(m,n)$ consists of partitions having $m$ parts of size at most $n$, ordered by inclusion of the corresponding Ferrers diagrams. K. O'Hara gave the first constructive proof of the unimodality of the Gaussian polynomials by expressing the underlying ranked set of $L(m,n)$ as a disjoint union of products of centered rank-unimodal subsets. We construct a finer decomposition which is compatible with the partial order on Young's lattice, at the cost of replacing the cartesian product with a more general poset extension. As a corollary, we obtain an explicit chain decomposition whic…
For a pair of natural numbers $k, l$, a $(k,l)$-colouring of a graph $G$ is a partition of the vertex set of $G$ into (possibly empty) sets $S_1, S_2, \dots, S_k$, $C_1, C_2, \dots, C_l$ such that each set $S_i$ is an independent set and each set $C_j$ induces a clique in $G$. The $(k,l)$-colouring problem, which is NP-complete in general, has been studied for special graph classes such as chordal graphs, cographs and line graphs. Let $\hatκ(G) = (κ_0(G),κ_1(G),\dots,κ_{θ(G)-1}(G))$ and $\hatλ(G) = (λ_0(G),λ_1(G),\dots,λ_{χ(G)-1}(G))$ where $κ_l(G)$ (respectively, $λ_k(G)$) is the minimum $k$ …
Berkovich-Uncu have recently proved a companion of the well-known Capparelli's identities as well as refinements of Savage-Sills' new little Göllnitz identities. Noticing the connection between their results and Boulet's earlier four-parameter partition generating functions, we discover a new class of partitions, called $k$-strict partitions, to generalize their results. By applying both horizontal and vertical dissections of Ferrers' diagrams with appropriate labellings, we provide a unified combinatorial treatment of their results and shed more lights on the intriguing conditions of their co…
An integer partition λof n corresponds, via its Ferrers diagram, to an artinian monomial ideal I of colength n in the polynomial ring on two variables. If the partition λcorresponds to an integrally closed ideal we call λconcave. We study generating functions for the number of concave partitions, unrestricted or with at most r parts.
We consider the Cayley graph on the symmetric group Sn generated by derangements. It is well known that the eigenvalues of this grpah are indexed by partitions of n. We investigate how these eigenvalues are determined by the shape of their corresponding partitions. In particular, we show that the sign of an eigenvalue is the parity of the number of cells below the first row of the corresponding Ferrers diagram. We also provide some lower and upper bounds for the absolute values of these eigenvalues.
We determine every Jordan type partition that occurs as the Jordan block decomposition for the multiplication map by a linear form in a height two homogeneous complete intersection (CI) Artinian algebra $A$ over an algebraically closed field $\sf k$ of characteristic zero or large enough. We show that these CI Jordan type partitions are those satisfying specific numerical conditions; also, given the Hilbert function $H(A)$, they are completely determined by which higher Hessians of $A$ vanish at the point corresponding to the linear form. We also show new combinatorial results about such parti…
The Huffman coding algorithm is interpreted in the lattice of partitions of the source alphabet. Maximal chains in the partition lattice correspond to linear extensions of tree orders, and those among the chains that exhibit a simple greedy property correspond precisely to executions of the Huffman algorithm.
We introduce and study the lattice of generalized partitions, called weighted partitions. This lattice possesses similar properties of the lattice of partitions. By use of the pictorial representation of a weighted partition, the total number is given by the successive Stirling transforms of the Stirling number of the second kind. We construct an explicit $EL$-labeling on the lattice, which implies this lattice is $EL$-shellable and hence shellable. We compute the Möbius function and the characteristic polynomial by use of a pictorial representation of a maximal decreasing chain. Further, a ma…
We prove identities generating higher dimensional vector partitions. We derive theorems for integer lattice points in the 2D first quadrant, then generalize the approach to find 3D and $n$-space lattice point vector region extensions. We also state combinatorial identities for Visible Point Vectors in 2D up to 5D and $n$D first hyperquadrant and hyperpyramid lattices. 2D and 3D theorems for vector partitions with binary components are also derived.
We prove that the noncrossing partition lattices associated with the complex reflection groups $G(d,d,n)$ for $d,n\geq 2$ admit symmetric decompositions into Boolean subposets. As a result, these lattices have the strong Sperner property and their rank-generating polynomials are symmetric, unimodal, and $γ$-nonnegative. We use computer computations to complete the proof that every noncrossing partition lattice associated with a well-generated complex reflection group is strongly Sperner, thus answering affirmatively a question raised by D. Armstrong.
Given a filter $Δ$ in the poset of compositions of $n$, we form the filter $Π^{*}_Δ$ in the partition lattice. We determine all the reduced homology groups of the order complex of $Π^{*}_Δ$ as ${\mathfrak S}_{n-1}$-modules in terms of the reduced homology groups of the simplicial complex $Δ$ and in terms of Specht modules of border shapes. We also obtain the homotopy type of this order complex. These results generalize work of Calderbank--Hanlon--Robinson and Wachs on the $d$-divisible partition lattice. Our main theorem applies to a plethora of examples, including filters associated to intege…
In this paper we study partitions whose successive ranks belong to a given set. We enumerate such partitions while keeping track of the number of parts, the largest part, the side of the Durfee square, and the height of the Durfee rectangle. We also obtain a new bijective proof of a result of Andrews and Bressoud that the number of partitions of $N$ with all ranks at least $1-\ell$ equals the number of partitions of $N$ with no parts equal to $\ell+1$, for $\ell\ge0$, which allows us to refine it by the above statistics. Combining Foata's second fundamental transformation for words with Greene…
Representing lattices L by equivalence relations amounts to embed them into the lattice Part(V) of all partitions of a set V, and has a long history. Here we are concerned with MODULAR lattices L and aim for sets V as small as possible, i.e. |V| = d(L)+1 where d(L) is the length of L. In other words, we strive for a tight (=cover-preserving) lattice homomorphism from L into Part(V). After a 24 year break the author offers progress, and outlines a program to finally fully characterize the lattices L that admit a tight embedding. Not just 'modular latticians' but also combinatorists are encourag…
The usual, or type A_n, Tamari lattice is a partial order on T_n^A, the triangulations of an (n+3)-gon. We define a partial order on T_n^B, the set of centrally symmetric triangulations of a (2n+2)-gon. We show that it is a lattice, and that it shares certain other nice properties of the A_n Tamari lattice, and therefore that it deserves to be considered the B_n Tamari lattice. We define a bijection between T_n^B and the non-crossing partitions of type B_n defined by Reiner. For S any subset of [n], Reiner defined a pseudo-type BD^S_n, to which is associated a subset of the noncrossing partiti…
In 2002 R. Suter identified a dihedral symmetry on certain order ideals in Young's lattice and gave a combinatorial action on the partitions in these order ideals. Viewing this result geometrically, the order ideals can be seen to be seen to be in bijection with the alcoves in a 2-fold dilation in the geometric realization of the affine symmetric group. By considering the m-fold dilation we observe a larger set of order ideals in the k-bounded partition lattice that was considered by L. Lapointe, A. Lascoux, and J. Morse in the study of k-Schur functions. We identify the order ideal and the cy…
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. The chain polynomials of the partition lattices and their standard type $B$ analogues are shown to have only real roots. The real-rootedness of the chain polynomial is conjectured for all geometric lattices and is shown to be preserved by the pyramid and the prism operations on Cohen--Macaulay posets. As a result, new families of convex polytopes whose face lattices have real-rooted chain polynomials are presented. An application to the face enumeration of the second barycentri…
We use the theory of hyperplane arrangements to construct natural bases for the homology of partition lattices of types A, B and D. This extends and explains the "splitting basis" for the homology of the partition lattice given in [Wa96], thus answering a question asked by R. Stanley. More explicitly, the following general technique is presented and utilized. Let A be a central and essential hyperplane arrangement in R^d. Let R_1,...,R_k be the bounded regions of a generic hyperplane section of A. We show that there are induced polytopal cycles ρ_{R_i} in the homology of the proper part \bar{L…
We study filters in the partition lattice formed by restricting to partitions by type. The Möbius function is determined in terms of the easier-to-compute descent set statistics on permutations and the Möbius function of filters in the lattice of integer compositions. When the underlying integer partition is a knapsack partition, the Möbius function on integer compositions is determined by a topological argument. In this proof the permutahedron makes a cameo appearance.
The partition lattice and noncrossing partition lattice are well studied objects in combinatorics. Given a graph $G$ on vertex set $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$, its bond lattice, $L_G$, is the subposet of the partition lattice formed by restricting to the partitions whose blocks induce connected subgraphs of $G$. In this article, we introduce a natural noncrossing analogue of the bond lattice, the noncrossing bond poset, $NC_G$, obtained by restricting to the noncrossing partitions of $L_G$. Both the noncrossing partition lattice and the bond lattice have many nice combinatorial properties. We show that…
Classical Gončarov polynomials arose in numerical analysis as a basis for the solutions of the Gončarov interpolation problem. These polynomials provide a natural algebraic tool in the enumerative theory of parking functions. By replacing the differentiation operator with a delta operator and using the theory of finite operator calculus, Lorentz, Tringali and Yan introduced the sequence of generalized Gončarov polynomials associated to a pair $(Δ, Z)$ of a delta operator $Δ$ and an interpolation grid $Z$. Generalized Gončarov polynomials share many nice algebraic properties and have a connecti…
Consider the noncrossing set partitions of an $n$-element set which either do not contain the block $\{n-1,n\}$, or which do not contain the singleton block $\{n\}$ whenever $1$ and $n-1$ are in the same block. In this article we study the subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice induced by these elements, and show that it is a supersolvable lattice, and therefore lexicographically shellable. We give a combinatorial model for the NBB bases of this lattice and derive an explicit formula for the value of its Möbius function between least and greatest element. This work is motivated by a rec…
We give a case-free proof that the lattice of noncrossing partitions associated to any finite real reflection group is EL-shellable. Shellability of these lattices was open for the groups of type $D_n$ and those of exceptional type and rank at least three.
For any finite, real reflection group $W$, we construct a geometric basis for the homology of the corresponding non-crossing partition lattice. We relate this to the basis for the homology of the corresponding intersection lattice introduced by Björner and Wachs in \cite{BW} using a general construction of a generic affine hyperplane for the central hyperplane arrangement defined by $W$.
A weak order on the set of maximal chains of the non-crossing partition lattice is introduced and studied. A $0$-Hecke algebra action is used to compute the radius of the graph on these chains in which two chains are adjacent if they differ in exactly one element.
We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. In particular this isomorphism singles out a canonical new basis of the symmetric functions in noncommutative variables which would be an analogue of the Schur function basis for this bialgebra.
This work proposes an alternative approach to the so-called lattice of embedded subsets, which is included in the product of the subset and partition lattices of a finite set, and whose elements are pairs consisting of a subset and a partition where the former is a block of the latter. The lattice structure proposed in a recent contribution relies on ad-hoc definitions of both the join operator and the bottom element, while also including join-irreducible elements distinct from atoms. Conversely, here embedded subsets obtain through a closure operator defined over the product of the subset and…
We show that the subgraph induced in Young's graph by the set of partitions with an odd number of standard Young tableaux is a binary tree. This tree exhibits self-similarities at all scales, and has a simple recursive description.
We give an elementary, case-free, Coxeter-theoretic derivation of the formula $h^nn!/|W|$ for the number of maximal chains in the noncrossing partition lattice $NC(W)$ of a real reflection group $W$. Our proof proceeds by comparing the Deligne-Reading recursion with a parabolic recursion for the characteristic polynomial of the $W$-Laplacian matrix considered in our previous work. We further discuss the consequences of this formula for the geometric group theory of spherical and affine Artin groups.
A lattice-path description of $K$-restricted jagged partitions is presented. The corresponding lattice paths can have peaks only at even $x$ coordinate and the maximal value of the height cannot be larger than $K-1$. Its weight is twice that of the corresponding jagged partitions. The equivalence is demonstrated at the level of generating functions. A bijection is given between $K$-restricted jagged partitions and partitions restricted by the following frequencies conditions: $f_{2j-1}$ is even and $f_j+f_{j+1}\leq K-1$, where $f_j$ is the number of occurrences of the part $j$ in the partition…
We define and study noncommutative crossing partitions which are a generalization of non-crossing partitions. By introducing a new cover relation on binary trees, we show that the partially ordered set of noncommutative crossing partitions is a graded lattice. This new lattice contains the Kreweras lattice, the lattice of non-crossing partitions, as a sublattice. We calculate the Möbius function, the number of maximal chains and the number of $k$-chains in this new lattice by constructing an explicit $EL$-labeling on the lattice. By use of the $EL$-labeling, we recover the classical results on…
For an integer $n\geq 5$, H. Strietz (1975) and L. Zádori (1986) proved that the lattice Part$(n)$ of all partitions of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ is four-generated. Developing L. Zádori's particularly elegant construction further, we prove that even the $k$-th direct power Part$(n)^k$ of Part$(n)$ is four-generated for many but only finitely many exponents $k$. E.g., Part$(n)^k$ is four-generated for every $k\leq 3\cdot 10^{89}$, and it has a four element generating set that is not an antichain for every $k\leq 1.4\cdot 10^{34}$. In connection with these results, we outline a protocol how to use these…
We investigate the standard context, denoted by $\mathbb{K}\left(\mathcal{L}_{n}\right)$, of the lattice $\mathcal{L}_{n}$ of partitions of a positive integer $n$ under the dominance order. Motivated by the discrete dynamical model to study integer partitions by Latapy and Duong Phan and by the characterization of the supremum and (infimum) irreducible partitions of $n$ by Brylawski, we show how to construct the join-irreducible elements of $\mathcal{L}_{n+1}$ from $\mathcal{L}_{n}$. We employ this construction to count the number of join-irreducible elements of $\mathcal{L}_{n}$, and show tha…
