In 2002 R. Suter identified a dihedral symmetry on certain order ideals in Young's lattice and gave a combinatorial action on the partitions in these order ideals. Viewing this result geometrically, the order ideals can be seen to be seen to be in bijection with the alcoves in a 2-fold dilation in the geometric realization of the affine symmetric group. By considering the m-fold dilation we observe a larger set of order ideals in the k-bounded partition lattice that was considered by L. Lapointe, A. Lascoux, and J. Morse in the study of k-Schur functions. We identify the order ideal and the cyclic action on it explicitly in a geometric and combinatorial form.
In the paper [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 43 (1986), 103--113], Stanley gives formulas for the number of plane partitions in each of ten symmetry classes. This paper together with results by Andrews [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 28-39] and Stembridge [Adv. Math 111 (1995), 227-243] completes the project of proving all ten formulas. We enumerate cyclically symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions. We first convert plane partitions to tilings of a hexagon in the plane by rhombuses, or equivalently to matchings in a certain planar graph. We can then use the permanent-determinant method …
We study the weighted partition function for lozenge tilings, with weights given by multivariate rational functions originally defined by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019) in the context of the factorial Schur functions. We prove that this partition function is symmetric for large families of regions. We employ both combinatorial and algebraic proofs.
Nice formulae for plane partitions with bounded size of parts (or boxed plane partitions), which generalize the norm-trace generating function by Stanley and the trace generating function by Gansner, are exhibited. The derivation of the nice formulae is based on lattice path combinatorics of biorthogonal polynomials, especially of the little $q$-Laguerre polynomials and a generalization of the little $q$-Laguerre polynomials. A summation formula which generalizes the $q$-Chu-Vandermonde identity is also shown and utilized to prove the orthogonality of the generalized little $q$-Laguerre polyno…
We propose new conjectures relating sum rules for the polynomial solution of the qKZ equation with open (reflecting) boundaries as a function of the quantum parameter $q$ and the $τ$-enumeration of Plane Partitions with specific symmetries, with $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. We also find a conjectural relation à la Razumov-Stroganov between the $τ\to 0$ limit of the qKZ solution and refined numbers of Totally Symmetric Self Complementary Plane Partitions.
We utilize Dyson's concept of the adjoint of a partition to derive an infinite family of new polynomial analogues of Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorem. We streamline Dyson's bijection relating partitions with crank <= k and those with k in the Rank-Set of partitions. Also, we extend Dyson's adjoint of a partition to MacMahon's ``modular'' partitions with modulus 2. This way we find a new combinatorial proof of Gauss's famous identity. We give a direct combinatorial proof that for n>1 the partitions of n with crank k are equinumerous with partitions of n with crank -k.
Let ${\cal{F}}=\{F_1,F_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of graphs such that $F_n$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $Δ$. We show that there exists an absolute constant $C$ such that the vertices of any 2-edge-colored complete graph can be partitioned into at most $2^{CΔ\logΔ}$ vertex disjoint monochromatic copies of graphs from ${\cal{F}}$. If each $F_n$ is bipartite, then we can improve this bound to $2^{C Δ}$; this result is optimal up to the constant $C$.
In this paper, we construct a bijection from a set of bounded free Motzkin paths to a set of bounded Motzkin prefixes that induces a bijection from a set of bounded free Dyck paths to a set of bounded Dyck prefixes. We also give bijections between a set of bounded cornerless Motzkin paths and a set of $t$-core partitions, and a set of bounded cornerless symmetric Motzkin paths and a set of self-conjugate $t$-core partitions. As an application, we get explicit formulas for the number of ordinary and self-conjugate $t$-core partitions with a fixed number of corners.
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains. Over 30 years ago, Szemerédi proved that any on-line algorithm could be forced to use $\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$. The maximum number of chains that can be forced on any on-line algorithm remains unknown. In a survey paper by Bosek et al., it is shown that Szemerédi's argument could be improved to obtain a lower bound almost twice as good. Variants of the problem were considered where the class is restricted to posets of bounde…
A cascade of dihedral symmetries is hidden in Young's lattice of integer partitions. In fact, for each integer N>2 the Hasse graph of the subposet consisting of the partitions with maximal hook length strictly less than N has the dihedral group of order 2N as its symmetry group. Here a new interpretation of those Hasse graphs is presented, namely as the 1-skeleta of the injective hulls of certain finite metric spaces.
We study the generating function for overpartitions with bounded differences between largest and smallest parts, which is analogous to a result of Breuer and Kronholm on integer partitions. We also connect this problem with over $q$-binomial coefficients introduced by Dousse and Kim.
Billey et al. [arXiv:1507.04976] have recently discovered a surprisingly simple formula for the number $a_n(σ)$ of leaf-labelled rooted non-embedded binary trees (also known as phylogenetic trees) with $n\geq 1$ leaves, fixed (for the relabelling action) by a given permutation $σ\in\frak{S}_n$. Denoting by $λ\vdash n$ the integer partition giving the sizes of the cycles of $σ$ in non-increasing order, they show by a guessing/checking approach that if $λ$ is a binary partition (it is known that $a_n(σ)=0$ otherwise), then $$ a_n(σ)=\prod_{i=2}^{\ell(λ)}(2(λ_i+\cdots+λ_{\ell(λ)})-1), $$ and they…
The main result of this paper is a bijective proof showing that the generating function for partitions with bounded differences between largest and smallest part is a rational function. This result is similar to the closely related case of partitions with fixed differences between largest and smallest parts which has recently been studied through analytic methods by Andrews, Beck, and Robbins. Our approach is geometric: We model partitions with bounded differences as lattice points in an infinite union of polyhedral cones. Surprisingly, this infinite union tiles a single simplicial cone. This …
We study the bounded regions in a generic slice of the hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ consisting of the hyperplanes defined by $x_i$ and $x_i+x_j$. The bounded regions are in bijection with several classes of combinatorial objects, including the ordered partitions of $[n]$ all of whose left-to-right minima occur at odd locations and the drawings of rooted plane trees with $n+1$ vertices. These are sequences of rooted plane trees such that each tree in a sequence can be obtained from the next one by removing a leaf.
An $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a vertex-partition into two sets $F$ and $F_d$ such that the graph induced by $F$ is a forest and the one induced by $F_d$ is a forest with maximum degree at most $d$. We prove that every triangle-free planar graph admits an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_5)$-partition. Moreover we show that if for some integer $d$ there exists a triangle-free planar graph that does not admit an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition, then it is an NP-complete problem to decide whether a triangle-free planar graph admits such a partition.
The counting of the dimension of the space of $U(N) \times U(N) \times U(N)$ polynomial invariants of a complex $3$-index tensor as a function of degree $n$ is known in terms of a sum of squares of Kronecker coefficients. For $n \le N$, the formula can be expressed in terms of a sum of symmetry factors of partitions of $n$ denoted $Z_3(n)$. We derive the large $n$ all-orders asymptotic formula for $ Z_3(n)$ making contact with high order results previously obtained numerically. The derivation relies on the dominance in the sum, of partitions with many parts of length $1$. The dominance of othe…
We present a generalization, which we call (k,m)-rank, of Dyson's notion of rank to integer partitions with k successive Durfee rectangles and give two combinatorial symmetries associated with this new definition. We prove these symmetries bijectively. Using the two symmetries we give a new combinatorial proof of generalized Roger-Ramanujan identities. We also describe the relationship between (k,m)-rank and Garvan's k-rank.
An $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a partition of the vertices of the graph into two sets $I$ and $F$, such that $I$ is an independent set and $F$ induces a forest of maximum degree at most $d$. We show that for all $M<3$ and $d \ge \frac{2}{3-M} - 2$, if a graph has maximum average degree less than $M$, then it has an $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition. Additionally, we prove that for all $\frac{8}{3} \le M < 3$ and $d \ge \frac{1}{3-M}$, if a graph has maximum average degree less than $M$ then it has an $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts where the largest part is at most $t\sqrt{n}$ for fixed $t \in \mathbb{R}$. Our method follows a probabilistic approach of Romik, who gave a simpler proof of Szekeres' asymptotic formula for distinct parts partitions when instead the number of parts is bounded by $t\sqrt{n}$. Although equivalent to a circle method/saddle-point method calculation, the probabilistic approach predicts the shape of the asymptotic formula, to some degree.
We study the problem of partitioning the vertex set of a given graph so that each part induces a graph with components of bounded order; we are also interested in restricting these components to be paths. In particular, we say a graph $G$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_k)$-partition if its vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph with components of order at most $k$. We prove that every graph $G$ with $\operatorname{mad}(G)<\frac 52$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_3)$-partition. This implies that every planar graph with girth at least $10$ can be par…
We study graph parameters whose associated edge-connection matrices have exponentially bounded rank growth. Our main result is an explicit construction of a large class of graph parameters with this property that we call mixed partition functions. Mixed partition functions can be seen as a generalization of partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227] and they are related to invariant theo…
We use k-Schur functions to get the minimal boundary of the k-bounded partition poset. This permits to describe the central random walks on affine Grassmannian elements of type A and yields a polynomial expression for their drift. We also recover Rietsch's parametriza-tion of totally nonnegative unitriangular Toeplitz matrices without using quantum cohomology of flag varieties. All the homeomorphisms we define can moreover be made explicit by using the combinatorics of k-Schur functions and elementary computations based on Perron-Frobenius theorem.
Given integers i,j,k,L,M, we establish a new double bounded q-series identity from which the three parameter (i,j,k) key identity of Alladi-Andrews-Gordon for Goellnitz's (big) theorem follows if L, M tend to infinity. When L = M, the identity yields a strong refinement of Goellnitz's theorem with a bound on the parts given by L. This is the first time a bounded version of Goellnitz's (big) theorem has been proved. This leads to new bounded versions of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions and other fundamental identities.
This paper addresses the following questions for a given tree $T$ and integer $d\geq2$: (1) What is the minimum number of degree-$d$ subtrees that partition $E(T)$? (2) What is the minimum number of degree-$d$ subtrees that cover $E(T)$? We answer the first question by providing an explicit formula for the minimum number of subtrees, and we describe a linear time algorithm that finds the corresponding partition. For the second question, we present a polynomial time algorithm that computes a minimum covering. We then establish a tight bound on the number of subtrees in coverings of trees with g…
Schur's partition theorem states that the number of partitions of n into distinct parts congruent 1, 2 (mod 3) equals the number of partitions of n into parts which differ by >= 3, where the inequality is strict if a part is a multiple of 3. We establish a double bounded refined version of this theorem by imposing one bound on the parts congruent 0,1 (mod 3) and another on the parts congruent 2 (mod 3), and by keeping track of the number of parts in each of the residue classes (mod 3). Despite the long history of Schur's theorem, our result is new, and extends earlier work of Andrews, Alladi-G…
We show that the number of partitions of n with alternating sum k such that the multiplicity of each part is bounded by 2m+1 equals the number of partitions of n with k odd parts such that the multiplicity of each even part is bounded by m. The first proof relies on two formulas with two parameters that are related to the four-parameter formulas of Boulet. We also give a combinatorial proof of this result by using Sylvester's bijection, which implies a stronger partition theorem. For m=0, our result reduces to Bessenrodt's refinement of Euler's Theorem. If the alternating sum and the number of…
We show that planar graphs have bounded queue-number, thus proving a conjecture of Heath, Leighton and Rosenberg from 1992. The key to the proof is a new structural tool called layered partitions, and the result that every planar graph has a vertex-partition and a layering, such that each part has a bounded number of vertices in each layer, and the quotient graph has bounded treewidth. This result generalises for graphs of bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we prove that every graph in a minor-closed class has such a layered partition if and only if the class excludes some apex graph. Building on …
Given an integer $n$, we introduce the integral Lie ring of partitions with bounded maximal part, whose elements are in one-to-one correspondence to integer partitions with parts in $\{1,2,\dots, n-1\}$. Starting from an abelian subring, we recursively define a chain of idealizers and we prove that the sequence of ranks of consecutive terms in the chain is definitely periodic. Moreover, we show that its growth depends of the partial sum of the partial sum of the sequence counting the number of partitions. This work generalizes our previous recent work on the same topic, devoted to the modular …
The seminal Lee-Yang theorem states that for any graph the zeros of the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model lie on the unit circle in $\mathbb C$. In fact the union of the zeros of all graphs is dense on the unit circle. In this paper we study the location of the zeros for the class of graphs of bounded maximum degree $d\geq 3$, both in the ferromagnetic and the anti-ferromagnetic case. We determine the location exactly as a function of the inverse temperature and the degree $d$. An important step in our approach is to translate to the setting of complex dynamics and analyze a …
We consider the problem of generating uniformly random partitions of the vertex set of a graph such that every piece induces a connected subgraph. For the case where we want to have partitions with linearly many pieces of bounded size, we obtain approximate sampling algorithms based on Glauber dynamics which are fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the bandwidth of $G$, with simple-exponential dependence on the bandwidth. For example, for rectangles of constant or logarithmic width this gives polynomial-time sampling algorithms. More generally, this gives sub-exponential algorithms for bo…
We generalize recent results of Breuer and Kronholm, and Chern on partitions and overpartitions with bounded differences between largest and smallest parts. We prove our generalization both analytically and combinatorially.
We derive the exact partition function for a discrete model of random trees embedded in a one-dimensional space. These trees have vertices labeled by integers representing their position in the target space, with the SOS constraint that adjacent vertices have labels differing by +1 or -1. A non-trivial partition function is obtained whenever the target space is bounded by walls. We concentrate on the two cases where the target space is (i) the half-line bounded by a wall at the origin or (ii) a segment bounded by two walls at a finite distance. The general solution has a soliton-like structure…
We study the problem of approximating the Ising model partition function with complex parameters on bounded degree graphs. We establish a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function when the interactions and external fields are absolutely bounded close to zero. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of Ising models the partition function does not vanish. Our algorithm is based on an approach due to Barvinok for approximating evaluations of a polynomial based on the location of the complex zeros and a technique due to Patel and Regts for efficiently computin…
In this paper we consider the sequence whose n^{th} term is the number of h-vectors of length n. We show that the n^{th} term of this sequence is bounded above by the n^{th} Fibonacci number and bounded below by the number if integer partitions of n into distinct parts. Further we show embedded sequences that directly relate to integer partitions.
