Let $d, r \in \N$, $\|\cdot\|$ any norm on $\R^d$ and $B$ denote the unit ball with respect to this norm. We show that any sequence $v_1,v_2,...$ of vectors in $B$ can be partitioned into $r$ subsequences $V_1, ..., V_r$ in a balanced manner with respect to the partial sums: For all $n \in \N$, $\ell \le r$, we have $\|\sum_{i \le k, v_i \in V_\ell} v_i - \tfrac 1r \sum_{i \le k} v_i\| \le 2.0005 d$. A similar bound holds for partitioning sequences of vector sets. Both results extend an earlier one of Bárány and Grinberg (1981) to partitions in arbitrarily many classes.
A hole in a graph is an induced cycle on at least four vertices. A graph is Berge if it has no odd hole and if its complement has no odd hole. In 2002, Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved a decomposition theorem for Berge graphs saying that every Berge graph either is in a well understood basic class, or has some kind of decomposition. Then, Chudnovsky proved stronger theorems. One of them restricts the allowed decompositions to 2-joins and balanced skew partitions. We prove that the problem of deciding whether a graph has a balanced skew partition is NP-hard. We give an $O(n^9)$-…
In this paper, we are interested in minimizing the sum of block sizes in a pairwise balanced design, where there are some constraints on the size of one block or the size of the largest block. For every positive integers n;m, where m ? n, let S(n;m) be the smallest integer s for which there exists a PBD on n points whose largest block has size m and the sum of its block sizes is equal to s. Also, let S0(n;m) be the smallest integers for which there exists a PBD on n points which has a block of size m and the sum of it block sizes is equal to s. We prove some lower bounds for S(n;m) and S0(n;m)…
Quaternary sequences of both even and odd period having low autocorrelation are studied. We construct new families of balanced quaternary sequences of odd period and low autocorrelation using cyclotomic classes of order eight, as well as investigate the linear complexity of some known quaternary sequences of odd period. We discuss a construction given by Chung et al. in "New Quaternary Sequences with Even Period and Three-Valued Autocorrelation" [IEICE Trans. Fundamentals Vol. E93-A, No. 1 (2010)] first by pointing out a slight modification (thereby obtaining new families of balanced and almos…
We colour the Fibonacci sequence by suitable constant gap sequences to provide an upper bound on the asymptotic repetitive threshold of $d$-ary balanced sequences. The bound is attained for $d=2, 4$ and $8$ and we conjecture that it happens for infinitely many even $d$'s. Our bound reveals an essential difference in behavior of the repetitive threshold and the asymptotic repetitive threshold of balanced sequences. The repetitive threshold of $d$-ary balanced sequences is known to be at least $1+\frac{1}{d-2}$ for each $d \geq 3$. In contrast, our bound implies that the asymptotic repetitive th…
Given an $n\times n$ array $M$ ($n\ge 7$), where each cell is colored in one of two colors, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a partition of $M$ into $n$ diagonals, each containing at least one cell of each color. As a consequence, it follows that if each color appears in at least $2n-1$ cells, then such a partition exists. The proof uses results on completion of partial Latin squares.
We consider log-convex sequences that satisfy an additional constraint imposed on their rate of growth. We call such sequences log-balanced. It is shown that all such sequences satisfy a pair of double inequalities. Sufficient conditions for log-balancedness are given for the case when the sequence satisfies a two- (or more-) term linear recurrence. It is shown that many combinatorially interesting sequences belong to this class, and, as a consequence, that the above-mentioned double inequalities are valid for all of them.
The existence of a partition of the common set of the vertices of two forests into two subsets, when difference of their capacities in the neighborhood of each vertex of each forest not greater than 2 is proved, and an example, which shows that improvement of the specified constant is impossible is brought.
It is well known that Sturmian sequences are the aperiodic sequences that are balanced over a 2-letter alphabet. They are also characterized by their complexity: they have exactly $(n+1)$ factors of length $n$. One possible generalization of Sturmian sequences is the set of infinite sequences over a $k$-letter alphabet, $k \geq 3$, which are closed under reversal and have at most one right special factor for each length. This is the set of episturmian sequences. These are not necessarily balanced over a $k$-letter alphabet, nor are they necessarily aperiodic. In this paper, we characterize bal…
We prove an extension of a ham sandwich theorem for families of lines in the plane by Dujmović and Langerman. Given two sets $A, B$ of $n$ lines each in the plane, we prove that it is possible to partition the plane into $r$ convex regions such that the following holds. For each region $C$ of the partition there is a subset of $c_r n^{1/r}$ lines of $A$ whose pairwise intersections are in $C$, and the same holds for $B$. In this statement $c_r$ only depends on $r$. We also prove that the dependence on $n$ is optimal.
We study the threshold between avoidable and unavoidable repetitions in infinite balanced sequences over finite alphabets. The conjecture stated by Rampersad, Shallit and Vandomme says that the minimal critical exponent of balanced sequences over the alphabet of size $d \geq 5$ equals $\frac{d-2}{d-3}$. This conjecture is known to hold for $d\in \{5, 6, 7,8,9,10\}$. We refute this conjecture by showing that the picture is different for bigger alphabets. We prove that critical exponents of balanced sequences over an alphabet of size $d\geq 11$ are lower bounded by $\frac{d-1}{d-2}$ and this bou…
We show that for any $2$-local colouring of the edges of the balanced complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, its vertices can be covered with at most~$3$ disjoint monochromatic paths. And, we can cover almost all vertices of any complete or balanced complete bipartite $r$-locally coloured graph with $O(r^2)$ disjoint monochromatic cycles.\\ We also determine the $2$-local bipartite Ramsey number of a path almost exactly: Every $2$-local colouring of the edges of $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic path on $n$ vertices.
We introduce the balanced crown decomposition that captures the structure imposed on graphs by their connected induced subgraphs of a given size. Such subgraphs are a popular modeling tool in various application areas, where the non-local nature of the connectivity condition usually results in very challenging algorithmic tasks. The balanced crown decomposition is a combination of a crown decomposition and a balanced partition which makes it applicable to graph editing as well as graph packing and partitioning problems. We illustrate this by deriving improved kernelization and approximation al…
In this paper, we show that two balanced triangulations of a closed surface are not necessary connected by a sequence of balanced stellar subdivisions and welds. This answers a question posed by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik. We also show that two balanced triangulations of a closed surface are connected by a sequence of three local operations, which we call the pentagon contraction, the balanced edge subdivision and the balanced edge weld. In addition, we prove that two balanced triangulations of the 2-sphere are connected by a sequence of pentagon contractions and their inverses if none of them …
The critical exponent $E(\mathbf u)$ of an infinite sequence $\mathbf u$ over a finite alphabet expresses the maximal repetition of a factor in $\mathbf u$. By the famous Dejean's theorem, $E(\mathbf u) \geq 1+\frac1{d-1}$ for every $d$-ary sequence $\mathbf u$. We define the asymptotic critical exponent $E^*(\mathbf u)$ as the upper limit of the maximal repetition of factors of length $n$. We show that for any $d>1$ there exists a $d$-ary sequence $\mathbf u$ having $E^*(\mathbf u)$ arbitrarily close to $1$. Then we focus on the class of $d$-ary balanced sequences. In this class, the values $…
We study aperiodic balanced sequences over finite alphabets. A sequence vv of this type is fully characterised by a Sturmian sequence u and two constant gap sequences y and y'. We show that the language of v is eventually dendric and we focus on return words to its factors. We develop a method for computing the critical exponent and asymptotic critical exponent of balanced sequences, provided the associated Sturmian sequence u has a quadratic slope. The method is based on looking for the shortest return words to bispecial factors in v. We illustrate our method on several examples; in particula…
Inspired by a question of Yannakakis on the Vertex Packing polytope of perfect graphs, we study the Clique-Stable Set Separation in a non-hereditary subclass of perfect graphs. A cut (B,W) of G (a bipartition of V(G)) separates a clique K and a stable set S if $K\subseteq B$ and $S\subseteq W$. A Clique-Stable Set Separator is a family of cuts such that for every clique K, and for every stable set S disjoint from K, there exists a cut in the family that separates K and S. Given a class of graphs, the question is to know whether every graph of the class admits a Clique-Stable Set Separator cont…
In this paper, we investigate the randomness properties of sequences in $\mathbb{Z}_v$ derived from permutations in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^*$ using the remainder function modulo $v$, where $p$ is a prime integer. Motivated by earlier studies with a cryptographic focus we compare sequences constructed from the ElGamal function $x \to g^x$ for $x\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ and $g$ a primitive element of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^*$, to sequences constructed from random permutations of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^*$. We prove that sequences obtained from ElGamal have maximal period and behave similarly to random permutations with re…
Building on a bijection of Vandervelde, we enumerate certain unimodal sequences whose alternating sum equals zero. This enables us to refine the enumeration of strict partitions with respect to the number of parts and the BG-rank.
The degree partition of a simple graph is its degree sequence rearranged in weakly decreasing order. The polytope of degree partitions (respectively, degree sequences) is the convex hull of all degree partitions (respectively, degree sequences) of a fixed length. We think of the degree sequence polytope as the symmetrization of the degree partition polytope and the degree partition polytope as the asymmetric part of the degree sequence polytope. The degree sequence polytope is a well studied object with formulas (generating functions) known for its face numbers, volume, and number of lattice p…
A balanced partition is a clustering of a graph into a given number of equal-sized parts. For instance, the Bisection problem asks to remove at most k edges in order to partition the vertices into two equal-sized parts. We prove that Bisection is FPT for the distance to constant cliquewidth if we are given the deletion set. This implies FPT algorithms for some well-studied parameters such as cluster vertex deletion number and feedback vertex set. However, we show that Bisection does not admit polynomial-size kernels for these parameters. For the Vertex Bisection problem, vertices need to be re…
Using sequences of finite length with positive integer elements and the inversion statistic on such sequences, a collection of binomial and multinomial identities are extended to their $q$-analog form via combinatorial proofs. Using the major index statistic on sequences, a connection between integer partitions with kinds and finite differences of the coefficients of generalized Galois numbers is established.
A joint degree matrix (JDM) specifies the number of connections between nodes of given degrees in a graph, for all degree pairs and uniquely determines the degree sequence of the graph. We consider the space of all balanced realizations of an arbitrary JDM, realizations in which the links between any two degree groups are placed as uniformly as possible. We prove that a swap Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm in the space of all balanced realizations of an {\em arbitrary} graphical JDM mixes rapidly, i.e., the relaxation time of the chain is bounded from above by a polynomial in the num…
In this paper, we partially solve an open problem, due to J.C. Molluzzo in 1976, on the existence of balanced Steinhaus triangles modulo a positive integer $n$, that are Steinhaus triangles containing all the elements of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ with the same multiplicity. For every odd number $n$, we build an orbit in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, by the linear cellular automaton generating the Pascal triangle modulo $n$, which contains infinitely many balanced Steinhaus triangles. This orbit, in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, is obtained from an integer sequence called the universal sequence. We show…
A classical result by Pachner states that two $d$-dimensional combinatorial manifolds with boundary are PL homeomorphic if and only they can be connected by a sequence of shellings and inverse shellings. We prove that for balanced, i.e., properly $(d + 1)$-colored, manifolds such a sequence can be chosen such that balancedness is preserved in each step. As a key ingredient we establish that any two balanced PL homeomorphic combinatorial manifolds with the same boundary are connected by a sequence of basic cross-flips, as was shown recently by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik for balanced manifolds wi…
We prove that the property of being closed (resp., palindromic, rich, privileged trapezoidal, balanced) is expressible in first-order logic for automatic (and some related) sequences. It therefore follows that the characteristic function of those n for which an automatic sequence x has a closed (resp., palindromic, privileged, rich, trape- zoidal, balanced) factor of length n is automatic. For privileged words this requires a new characterization of the privileged property. We compute the corresponding characteristic functions for various famous sequences, such as the Thue-Morse sequence, the …
To partition a sequence of n integers into subsets with prescribed sums is an NP-hard problem in general. In this paper we present an efficient solution for the homogeneous version of this problem; i.e. where the elements in each subset add up to the same sum.
Set partitions avoiding $k$-crossing and $k$-nesting have been extensively studied from the aspects of both combinatorics and mathematical biology. By using the generating tree technique, the obstinate kernel method and Zeilberger's algorithm, Lin confirmed a conjecture due independently to the author and Martinez-Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length 3 and enhanced 3-nonnesting partitions have the same cardinality. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of this conjecture. Our bijection also enables us to provide a new bijective proof of …
We prove a conjecture due independently to Yan and Martinez--Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length $3$ and enhanced $3$-noncrossing partitions have the same cardinality. Our approach applies both the generating tree technique and the so-called obstinate kernel method developed by Bousquet-Mélou. One application of this equinumerosity is a discovery of an intriguing identity involving numbers of classical and enhanced $3$-noncrossing partitions.
We present a bijection between non-crossing partitions of the set $[2n+1]$ into $n+1$ blocks such that no block contains two consecutive integers, and the set of sequences $\{s_{i}\}_{1}^{n}$ such that $1 \leq s_{i} \leq i$, and if $s_{i}=j$, then $s_{i-r} \leq j-r$ for $1 \leq r \leq j-1$.
We exhibit a bijection between recently-introduced combinatorial objects known as valid hook configurations and certain weighted set partitions. When restricting our attention to set partitions that are matchings, we obtain three new combinatorial interpretations of Lassalle's sequence. One of these interpretations involves permutations that have exactly one preimage under the (West) stack-sorting map. We prove that the sequences obtained by counting these permutations according to their first entries are symmetric, and we conjecture that they are log-concave. We also obtain new recurrence rel…

A result of Rosenthal says that for every $q>1$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$ there is $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every sequence of $N$ distinct positive numbers contains, after a suitable translation and possible multiplication by $-1$, a subsequence $a_1,\ldots,a_n$ that is either $q$-increasing (that is, $a_{i+1}>qa_i$ for all $i$) or $1/q$-decreasing ($a_{i+1}<a_i/q$ for all $i$). One of our main theorems extends this result to vector sequences. This theorem is then used to prove the universality theorem for Tverberg partitions which says that, for every $d$ and $r$, every long enough sequence …
Kostant's partition function is a vector partition function that counts the number of ways one can express a weight of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as a nonnegative integral linear combination of the positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. Multiplex juggling sequences are generalizations of juggling sequences that specify an initial and terminal configuration of balls and allow for multiple balls at any particular discrete height. Magic multiplex juggling sequences generalize further to include magic balls, which cancel with standard balls when they meet at the same height. In this paper, we establi…
The Markoff injectivity conjecture states that $w\mapstoμ(w)_{12}$ is injective on the set of Christoffel words where $μ:\{\mathtt{0},\mathtt{1}\}^*\to\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ is a certain homomorphism and $M_{12}$ is the entry above the diagonal of a $2\times2$ matrix $M$. Recently, Leclere and Morier-Genoud (2021) proposed a $q$-analog $μ_q$ of $μ$ such that $μ_{q}(w)_{12}|_{q=1}=μ(w)_{12}$ is the Markoff number associated to the Christoffel word $w$ when evaluated at $q=1$. We show that there exists an order $<_{radix}$ on $\{\mathtt{0},\mathtt{1}\}^*$ such that for every balanced sequenc…
Our goal is to investigate a close relative of the independent transversal problem in the class of infinite $K_n$-free graphs: we show that for any infinite $K_n$-free graph $G=(V,E)$ and $m\in \mathbb N$ there is a minimal $r=r(G,m)$ such that for any balanced $r$-colouring of the vertices of $G$ one can find an independent set which meets at least $m$ colour classes in a set of size $|V|$. Answering a conjecture of S. Thomassé, we express the exact value of $r(H_n,m)$ (using Ramsey-numbers for finite digraphs), where $H_n$ is Henson's countable universal homogeneous $K_n$-free graph. In turn…
We study ternary sequences associated with a multidimensional continued fraction algorithm introduced by the first author. The algorithm is defined by two matrices and we show that it is measurably isomorphic to the shift on the set $\{1,2\}^\mathbb{N}$ of directive sequences. For a given set $\mathcal{C}$ of two substitutions, we show that there exists a $\mathcal{C}$-adic sequence for every vector of letter frequencies or, equivalently, for every directive sequence. We show that their factor complexity is at most $2n+1$ and is $2n+1$ if and only if the letter frequencies are rationally indep…
We study the equivariant flag $f$-vector and equivariant flag $h$-vector of a balanced relative simplicial complex with respect to a group action. When the complex satisfies Serre's condition $(S_{\ell}),$ we show that the equivariant flag $h$-vector, the equivariant $h$-vector, and the equivariant $f$-vector satisfy several inequalities. We apply these results to the study of $P$-partitions of double posets, and weak colorings of mixed graphs.
In this paper we study generating functions resembling the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We give combinatorial interpretations, identities in terms of mock modular forms, asymptotics, and a parity result. Our functions imitate a relation between the rank of strongly unimodal sequences and the rank of integer partitions.
We establish a total lexicographical order on the set of Motzkin words. Elements are ordered similarly to Natural Numbers in accordance with known rules (axioms). As a result, we were able to obtain arithmetic and logical operations on the elements of the ordered sequence, Motzkin Row. This sequence consists of balanced brackets without leading zeros, with the exception of the initial word "0". It is the word "0" as well as the alphabetical symbol "0" that are analogues of numeric zero in the corresponding operations. Logical operations allow you to navigate Motzkin Row. Operations on words ar…
Let $α>1$ be an irrational number. We establish asymptotic formulas for the number of partitions of $n$ into summands and distinct summands, chosen from the Beatty sequence $(\lfloorαm\rfloor)_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. This improves some results of Erdös and Richmond established in 1977.
