Given an $n\times n$ array $M$ ($n\ge 7$), where each cell is colored in one of two colors, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a partition of $M$ into $n$ diagonals, each containing at least one cell of each color. As a consequence, it follows that if each color appears in at least $2n-1$ cells, then such a partition exists. The proof uses results on completion of partial Latin squares.
The flag f-vectors of three-colored complexes are characterized. This also characterizes the flag h-vectors of balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes of dimension two, as well as the flag h-vectors of balanced shellable complexes of dimension two.
For any positive integers $a$ and $b$, we enumerate all colored partitions made by noncrossing diagonals of a convex polygon into polygons whose number of sides is congruent to $b$ modulo $a$. For the number of such partitions made by a fixed number of diagonals, we give both a recurrence relation and an explicit representation in terms of partial Bell polynomials. We use basic properties of these polynomials to efficiently incorporate restrictions on the type of polygons allowed in the partitions.
An edge-coloring of a complete graph with a set of colors $C$ is called completely balanced if any vertex is incident to the same number of edges of each color from $C$. Erdős and Tuza asked in $1993$ whether for any graph $F$ on $\ell$ edges and any completely balanced coloring of any sufficiently large complete graph using $\ell$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $F$. This question was restated by Erdős in his list of ``Some of my favourite problems on cycles and colourings''. We answer this question in the negative for most cliques $F=K_q$ by giving explicit constructions of respective comp…
This paper is devoted to the random generation of particular colored necklaces for which the number of beads of a given color is constrained (these necklaces are called v-balanced). We propose an efficient sampler (its expected time complexity is linear) which satisfies the Boltzmann model principle introduced by Duchon, Flajolet, Louchard and Schaeffer. Our main motivation is to show that the absence of a decomposable specification can be circumvented by mixing the Boltzmann samplers with other types of samplers.
We study a Turán-type problem on edge-colored complete graphs. We show that for any $r$ and $t$, any sufficiently large $r$-edge-colored complete graph on $n$ vertices with $Ω(n^{2-1/tr^r})$ edges in each color contains a member from certain finite family $\mathcal{F}_t^r$ of $r$-edge-colored complete graphs. We conjecture that $Ω(n^{2-1/t})$ edges in each color are sufficient to find a member from ${\mathcal{F}}_t^r$. A result of Girão and Narayanan confirms this conjecture when $r=2$. Next, we study a related problem where the corresponding Turán threshold is linear. We call an edge-coloring…
We say that a diagonal in an array is {\em $λ$-balanced} if each entry occurs $λ$ times. Let $L$ be a frequency square of type $F(n;λ^m)$; that is, an $n\times n$ array in which each entry from $\{1,2,\dots ,m\}$ occurs $λ$ times per row and $λ$ times per column. We show that if $m\leq 3$, $L$ contains a $λ$-balanced diagonal, with only one exception up to equivalence when $m=2$. We give partial results for $m\geq 4$ and suggest a generalization of Ryser's conjecture, that every latin square of odd order has a transversal. Our method relies on first identifying a small substructure with the fr…
In a balanced graph decomposition, every vertex of the host graph appears in the same number of blocks. We propose the use of colored loops as a framework for unifying various other types of local balance conditions in graph decompositions. In the basic case where a single graph with colored loops is used as a block, an existence theory for such decompositions follows as a straightforward generalization of previous work on balanced graph decompositions.

We introduce a notion of cross-flips: local moves that transform a balanced (i.e., properly $(d+1)$-colored) triangulation of a combinatorial $d$-manifold into another balanced triangulation. These moves form a natural analog of bistellar flips (also known as Pachner moves). Specifically, we establish the following theorem: any two balanced triangulations of a closed combinatorial $d$-manifold can be connected by a sequence of cross-flips. Along the way we prove that for every $m \geq d+2$ and any closed combinatorial $d$-manifold $M$, two $m$-colored triangulations of $M$ can be connected by …
Gyárfás and Lehel and independently Faudree and Schelp proved that in any 2-coloring of the edges of $K_{n,n}$ there exists a monochromatic path on at least $2\lceil n/2\rceil$ vertices, and this is tight. We prove a stability version of this result which holds even if the host graph is not complete; that is, if $G$ is a balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(3/4+o(1))n$, then in every 2-coloring of the edges of $G$, either there exists a monochromatic cycle on at least $(1+o(1))n$ vertices, or the coloring of $G$ is close to an extremal coloring -- in which c…
For a graph $G$ and a not necessarily proper $k$-edge coloring $c:E(G)\to \{ 1,\ldots,k\}$, let $m_i(G)$ be the number of edges of $G$ of color $i$, and call $G$ {\it color-balanced} if $m_i(G)=m_j(G)$ for every two colors $i$ and $j$. Several famous open problems relate to this notion; Ryser's conjecture on transversals in latin squares, for instance, is equivalent to the statement that every properly $n$-edge colored complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ has a color-balanced perfect matching. We contribute some results on the question posed by Kittipassorn and Sinsap (arXiv:2011.00862v1) whethe…
The Balanced Connected Subgraph problem (BCS) was recently introduced by Bhore et al. (CALDAM 2019). In this problem, we are given a graph $G$ whose vertices are colored by red or blue. The goal is to find a maximum connected subgraph of $G$ having the same number of blue vertices and red vertices. They showed that this problem is NP-hard even on planar graphs, bipartite graphs, and chordal graphs. They also gave some positive results: BCS can be solved in $O(n^3)$ time for trees and $O(n + m)$ time for split graphs and properly colored bipartite graphs, where $n$ is the number of vertices and…
A finite or infinite matrix $A$ is image partition regular provided that whenever $\mathbb N$ is finitely colored, there must be some $\vec{x}$ with entries from $\mathbb N$ such that all entries of $A\vec{x}$ are in some color class. In [6], it was proved that the diagonal sum of a finite and an infinite image partition regular matrix is also image partition regular. It was also shown there that centrally image partition regular matrices are closed under diagonal sum. Using Theorem 3.3 of [2], one can conclude that diagonal sum of two infinite image partition regular matrices may not be image…
We revisit the geometric description of cluster categories in type E in terms of colored diagonals in a polygon and generalize it to the case of m-cluster categories. As an application, we relate colored diagonals in a polygon to semi-standard Young tableaux, in type E_6,E_7,E_8. This provides a new compatibility description of semi--standard Young tableaux in Grassmannian cluster algebras in type E_6, E_8 and in a sub-cluster algebra of type E_7.
In 2001, Brualdi and Hollingsworth proved that an edge-colored balanced complete bipartite graph Kn,n with a color set C = {1,2,3,..., 2n-1} has a heterochromatic spanning tree if the number of edges colored with colors in R is more than |R|^2 /4 for any non-empty subset R \subseteq C, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors, namely, any color appears at most once. In 2010, Suzuki generalized heterochromatic graphs to f-chromatic graphs, where any color c appears at most f(c). Moreover, he presented a necessary and sufficient condition for grap…
We study a new integrable probabilistic system, defined in terms of a stochastic colored vertex model on a square lattice. The main distinctive feature of our model is a new family of parameters attached to diagonals rather than to rows or columns, like in other similar models. Because of these new parameters the previously known results about vertex models cannot be directly applied, but nevertheless the integrability remains, and we prove explicit integral expressions for $q$-deformed moments of the (colored) height functions of the model. Following known techniques our model can be interpre…
Flips of diagonals in colored triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon are interpreted as moves between two adjacent chambers in a certain graphic hyperplane arrangement. Properties of geodesics in the associated flip graph are deduced. In particular, it is shown that: (1) every diagonal is flipped exactly once in a geodesic between distinguished pairs of antipodes; (2) the number of geodesics between these antipodes is equal to twice the number of Young tableaux of a truncated shifted staircase shape.
Let the star on $n$ vertices, namely $K_{1,n-1}$ be denoted by $S_n$. If every two coloring of the edges of a complete balanced multipartite graph $K_{j \times s}$ there is a copy of $S_n$ in the first color or a copy of $S_m$ in the second color, then we will say $K_{j \times s}\rightarrow (S_n,S_m)$. The size Ramsey multipartite number $m_j(S_n, S_m)$ is the smallest natural number $s$ such that $K_{j \times s}\rightarrow (S_n,S_m)$. In this paper, we obtain the exact values of the size Ramsey numbers $m_j(S_n,S_m)$ for $n,m \ge 3$ and $j \ge 3$.
Given a $d$-dimensional tensor $T:A_1\times\dots\times A_d\rightarrow \mathbb{F}$ (where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field), the $i$-flattening rank of $T$ is the rank of the matrix whose rows are indexed by $A_{i}$, columns are indexed by $B_{i}=A_1\times\dots\times A_{i-1}\times A_{i+1}\times\dots\times A_{d}$ and whose entries are given by the corresponding values of $T$. The max-flattening rank of $T$ is defined as $\text{mfrank}(T)=\max_{i\in [d]}\text{frank}_{i}(T)$. A tensor $T:A^{d}\rightarrow\mathbb{F}$ is called semi-diagonal, if $T(a,\dots,a)\neq 0$ for every $a\in A$, and $T(a_{1},\dots,a_{d…
