In a balanced graph decomposition, every vertex of the host graph appears in the same number of blocks. We propose the use of colored loops as a framework for unifying various other types of local balance conditions in graph decompositions. In the basic case where a single graph with colored loops is used as a block, an existence theory for such decompositions follows as a straightforward generalization of previous work on balanced graph decompositions.
We find the first non-octahedral balanced 2-neighborly 3-sphere and the balanced 2-neighborly triangulation of the lens space $L(3,1)$. Each construction has 16 vertices. We show that there exists a balanced 3-neighborly non-spherical 5-manifold with 18 vertices. We also show that the rank-selected subcomplexes of a balanced simplicial sphere do not necessarily have an ear decomposition.
Intervals in binary or n-ary relations or other discrete structures generalize the concept of interval in a linearly ordered set. Join-irreducible partitions into intervals are characterized in the lattice of all interval decompositions of a set, in a general sense of intervals defined axiomatically. This characterization is used to show that the lattice of interval decompositions is balanced.
We give a new proof of König's theorem and generalize the Gallai-Edmonds decomposition to balanced hypergraphs in two different ways. Based on our decompositions we give two new characterizations of balanced hypergraphs and show some properties of matchings and vertex cover in balanced hypergraphs.
Given an $n\times n$ array $M$ ($n\ge 7$), where each cell is colored in one of two colors, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a partition of $M$ into $n$ diagonals, each containing at least one cell of each color. As a consequence, it follows that if each color appears in at least $2n-1$ cells, then such a partition exists. The proof uses results on completion of partial Latin squares.
Decomposing a digraph into subdigraphs with a fixed structure or property is a classical problem in graph theory and a useful tool in a number of applications of networks and communication. A digraph is strongly connected if it contains a directed path from each vertex to all others. In this paper we consider multipartite tournaments, and we study the existence of a partition of a multipartite tournament with $c$ partite sets into strongly connected $c$-tournaments. This is a continuation of the study started in 1999 by Volkmann of the existence of strongly connected subtournaments in multipar…
A {\em balanced coloring} of a graph $G$ means a triple $\{P_1,P_2,X\}$ of mutually disjoint subsets of the vertex-set $V(G)$ such that $V(G)=P_1 \uplus P_2 \uplus X$ and $|P_1|=|P_2|$. A {\em balanced decomposition} associated with the balanced coloring $V(G)=P_1 \uplus P_2 \uplus X$ of $G$ is defined as a partition of $V(G)=V_1 \uplus \cdots \uplus V_r$ (for some $r$) such that, for every $i \in \{1,\cdots,r\}$, the subgraph $G[V_i]$ of $G$ is connected and $|V_i \cap P_1| = |V_i \cap P_2|$. Then the {\em balanced decomposition number} of a graph $G$ is defined as the minimum integer $s$ suc…

A hole in a graph is an induced cycle on at least four vertices. A graph is Berge if it has no odd hole and if its complement has no odd hole. In 2002, Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved a decomposition theorem for Berge graphs saying that every Berge graph either is in a well understood basic class, or has some kind of decomposition. Then, Chudnovsky proved stronger theorems. One of them restricts the allowed decompositions to 2-joins and balanced skew partitions. We prove that the problem of deciding whether a graph has a balanced skew partition is NP-hard. We give an $O(n^9)$-…
We introduce the balanced crown decomposition that captures the structure imposed on graphs by their connected induced subgraphs of a given size. Such subgraphs are a popular modeling tool in various application areas, where the non-local nature of the connectivity condition usually results in very challenging algorithmic tasks. The balanced crown decomposition is a combination of a crown decomposition and a balanced partition which makes it applicable to graph editing as well as graph packing and partitioning problems. We illustrate this by deriving improved kernelization and approximation al…
We give a minimum degree condition sufficent to ensure the existence of a fractional $K_r$-decomposition in a balanced $r$-partite graph (subject to some further simple necessary conditions). This generalises the non-partite problem studied recently by Barber, Lo, Kühn, Osthus and the author, and the $3$-partite fractional $K_3$-decomposition problem studied recently by Dukes. Combining our result with recent work by Barber, Kühn, Lo, Osthus and Taylor, this gives a minimum degree condition sufficient to ensure the existence of a (non-fractional) $K_r$-decomposition in a balanced $r$-partite g…
A joint degree matrix (JDM) specifies the number of connections between nodes of given degrees in a graph, for all degree pairs and uniquely determines the degree sequence of the graph. We consider the space of all balanced realizations of an arbitrary JDM, realizations in which the links between any two degree groups are placed as uniformly as possible. We prove that a swap Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm in the space of all balanced realizations of an {\em arbitrary} graphical JDM mixes rapidly, i.e., the relaxation time of the chain is bounded from above by a polynomial in the num…
In [{Structural properties and decomposition of linear balanced matrices}, {\it Mathematical Programming}, 55:129--168, 1992], Conforti and Rao conjectured that every balanced bipartite graph contains an edge that is not the unique chord of a cycle. We prove this conjecture for balanced bipartite graphs that do not contain a cycle of length 4 (also known as linear balanced bipartite graphs), and for balanced bipartite graphs whose maximum degree is at most 3. We in fact obtain results for more general classes, namely linear balanceable and subcubic balanceable graphs. Additionally, we prove th…
We introduce a graph decomposition which exists for all simple, connected graphs $G=(V,E)$. The decomposition $V = A \cup B \cup C$ is such that each vertex in $A$ has more neighbors in $B$ than in $A$ and vice versa. $C$ is `balanced': each $v \in C$ has the same number of neighbours in $A$ and $B$. These decompositions arise naturally from the behavior of an associated dynamical system (`Randomized Rounding') on $(\mathbb{S}^1)^{|V|}$. Connections to judicious partitions and the \textsc{MaxCut} problem (in particular the Burer-Monteiro-Zhang heuristic) are being discussed.
Our main result essentially reduces the problem of finding an edge-decomposition of a balanced r-partite graph of large minimum degree into r-cliques to the problem of finding a fractional r-clique decomposition or an approximate one. Together with very recent results of Bowditch and Dukes as well as Montgomery on fractional decompositions into triangles and cliques respectively, this gives the best known bounds on the minimum degree which ensures an edge-decomposition of an r-partite graph into r-cliques (subject to trivially necessary divisibility conditions). The case of triangles translate…

A graph $G$ is said to be ubiquitous, if every graph $Γ$ that contains arbitrarily many disjoint $G$-minors automatically contains infinitely many disjoint $G$-minors. The well-known Ubiquity conjecture of Andreae says that every locally finite graph is ubiquitous. In this paper we show that locally finite graphs admitting a certain type of tree-decomposition, which we call an extensive tree-decomposition, are ubiquitous. In particular this includes all locally finite graphs of finite tree-width, and also all locally finite graphs with finitely many ends, all of which have finite degree. It re…
A Hadamard matrix is balanced splittable if some subset of its rows has the property that the dot product of every two distinct columns takes at most two values. This definition was introduced by Kharaghani and Suda in 2019, although equivalent formulations have been previously studied using different terminology. We collate previous results phrased in terms of balanced splittable Hadamard matrices, real flat equiangular tight frames, spherical two-distance sets, and two-distance tight frames. We use combinatorial analysis to restrict the parameters of a balanced splittable Hadamard matrix to …
Which patterns must a two-colouring of $K_n$ contain if each vertex has at least $\varepsilon n$ red and $\varepsilon n$ blue neighbours? In this paper, we investigate this question and its multicolour variant. For instance, we show that any such graph contains a $t$-blow-up of an \textit{alternating 4-cycle} with $t = Ω(\log n)$.
First, we construct a class of functions with good local avalanche characteristics, but bad global avalanche characteristics. We also derive some bounds for the nonlinearity of such functions. It improves upon the results of Son et al., and Sung et al. In our second result we construct a class of highly nonlinear balanced functions with good local and global avalanche characteristics.
The Dulmage--Mendelsohn decomposition (or the DM-decomposition) gives a unique partition of the vertex set of a bipartite graph reflecting the structure of all the maximum matchings therein. A bipartite graph is said to be DM-irreducible if its DM-decomposition consists of a single component. In this paper, we focus on the problem of making a given bipartite graph DM-irreducible by adding edges. When the input bipartite graph is balanced (i.e., both sides have the same number of vertices) and has a perfect matching, this problem is equivalent to making a directed graph strongly connected by ad…
