The algebra of so-called shifted symmetric functions on partitions has the property that for all elements a certain generating series, called the $q$-bracket, is a quasimodular form. More generally, if a graded algebra $A$ of functions on partitions has the property that the $q$-bracket of every element is a quasimodular form of the same weight, we call $A$ a quasimodular algebra. We introduce a new quasimodular algebra consisting of symmetric polynomials in the part sizes and multiplicities.
We obtain a condition describing when the quasimodular forms given by the Bloch-Okounkov theorem as $q$-brackets of certain functions on partitions are actually modular. This condition involves the kernel of an operator Δ. We describe an explicit basis for this kernel, which is very similar to the space of classical harmonic polynomials.
In this paper, we study algebraic and analytic properties of Fourier coefficients, expressed as $q$-series, of the so-called Bloch-Okounkov $n$-point function. We prove several results about these series and explain how they relate to Rogers' false theta function. Then we obtain their full asymptotics, as $τ\rightarrow 0$, and use this result to derive asymptotic properties of the coefficients in the $q$-expansion. At the end, we also introduce and discuss higher rank generalization of Bloch-Okounkov's functions.
Bloch-Okounkov studied certain functions on partitions $f$ called shifted symmetric polynomials. They showed that certain $q$-series arising from these functions (the so-called \emph{$q$-brackets} $\left<f\right>_q$) are quasimodular forms. We revisit a family of such functions, denoted $Q_k$, and study the $p$-adic properties of their $q$-brackets. To do this, we define regularized versions $Q_k^{(p)}$ for primes $p.$ We also use Jacobi forms to show that the $\left<Q_k^{(p)}\right>_q$ are quasimodular and find explicit expressions for them in terms of the $\left<Q_k\right>_q$.
There are many families of functions on partitions, such as the shifted symmetric functions, for which the corresponding q-brackets are quasimodular forms. We extend these families so that the corresponding q-brackets are quasimodular for a congruence subgroup. Moreover, we find subspaces of these families for which the q-bracket is a modular form. These results follow from the properties of Taylor coefficients of strictly meromorphic quasi-Jacobi forms around rational lattice points.
We prove the quasimodularity of generating functions for counting torus covers, with and without Siegel-Veech weight. Our proof is based on analyzing decompositions of flat surfaces into horizontal cylinders. The quasimodularity arise as contour integral of quasi-elliptic functions. It provides an alternative proof of the quasimodularity results of Bloch-Okounkov, Eskin-Okounkov and Chen-Moeller-Zagier, and generalizes the results of Boehm-Bringmann-Buchholz-Markwig for simple ramification covers.
We study the $q$-bracket operator of Bloch and Okounkov when applied to $f(λ)=\sum_{λ_i \in λ}g(λ_i)$ and $f(λ)=\sum_{\substack{λ_i \in λλ_i \text{distinct} }}g(λ_i)$. We use these expansions to derive convolution identities for the functions $f$ and link both classes of $q$-brackets through divisor sums. As a result, we generalize Euler's classic convolution identity for the partition function and obtain an analogous identity for the totient function. As corollaries, we generalize Stanley's theorem as well as provide several new combinatorial results.
We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and find many theorems of classical number theory arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. We then see that the relatively recently-defined $q$-bracket operator $\left<f\right>_q$, studied by Bloch-Okounkov, Zagier, and others for its quasimodular properties, plays a deep role in the theory of partitions, quite apart from questions of modularity. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for the coefficients of $\left<f\right>_q$ for any function…
For an elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, putting $K=\mathbb{Q}(E[p])$ which is the $p$-th division field of $E$ for an odd prime $p$, we study the ideal class group $\mathrm{Cl}_K$ of $K$ as a $\mathrm{Gal}(K/\mathbb{Q})$-module. More precisely, for any $j$ with $1\leqslant j \leqslant p-2$, we give a condition that $\mathrm{Cl}_K\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ has the symmetric power $\mathrm{Sym}^j E[p]$ of $E[p]$ as its quotient $\mathrm{Gal}(K/\mathbb{Q})$-module, in terms of Bloch-Kato's Tate-Shafarevich group of $\mathrm{Sym}^j V_p E$. Here $V_p E$ denotes the rational $p$-adic Tate module of …
Let $F$ be a cuspidal eigenform of even weight and trivial nebentypus, let $p$ be a prime not dividing the level of $F$, and let $ρ_F$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to $F$. Assume that the $L$-function attached to the symmetric cube of $ρ_F$ vanishes to odd order at its central point. Then under some mild hypotheses, and conditional on certain consequences of Arthur's conjectures, we construct a nontrivial element in the Bloch--Kato Selmer group of an appropriate twist of the symmetric cube of $ρ_F$, in accordance with the Bloch--Kato conjectures. Our technique is based on the…
The conjectures of Deligne, Be\uılinson, and Bloch-Kato assert that there should be relations between the arithmetic of algebro-geometric objects and the special values of their $L$-functions. We make a numerical study for symmetric power $L$-functions of elliptic curves, obtaining data about the validity of their functional equations, frequency of vanishing of central values, and divisibility of Bloch-Kato quotients.
We introduce certain correlation functions (graded $q$--traces) associated to vertex operator algebras and superalgebras which we refer to as $n$--point functions. These naturally arise in the studies of representations of Lie algebras of differential operators on the circle \cite{Le1}--\cite{Le2}, \cite{M}. We investigate their properties and consider the corresponding graded $q$--traces in parallel with the passage from genus 0 to genus 1 conformal field theory. By using the vertex operator algebra theory we analyze in detail correlation functions in some particular cases. We obtain elliptic…
Let K be an imaginary quadratic field of discriminant -D_K<0. We introduce a notion of an adelic Maass space S_{k, -k/2}^M for automorphic forms on the quasi-split unitary group U(2,2) associated with K and prove that it is stable under the action of all Hecke operators. When D_K is prime we obtain a Hecke-equivariant descent from S_{k,-k/2}^M to the space of elliptic cusp forms S_{k-1}(D_K, χ_K), where χ_K is the quadratic character of K. For a given ϕ\in S_{k-1}(D_K, χ_K), a prime l >k, we then construct (mod l) congruences between the Maass form corresponding to ϕand hermitian modular forms…
We consider the $t$-hook functions on partitions $f_{a,t}: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ defined by $$ f_{a,t}(λ):=t^{a-1} \sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^a}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}_t(λ)$ is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of $t$. The Bloch-Okounkov $q$-brackets $\langle f_{a,t}\rangle_q$ include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even $a\geq 2$, we show that these $q$-brackets are natural pieces of weight $2-a$ sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd $a\leq -1,$ we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. …
In Ramanujan's final letter to Hardy, he listed examples of a strange new class of infinite series he called "mock theta functions". It turns out all of these examples are essentially specializations of a so-called universal mock theta function $g_3(z,q)$ of Gordon-McIntosh. Here we show that $g_3$ arises naturally from the reciprocal of the classical Jacobi triple product -- and is intimately tied to rank generating functions for unimodal sequences, which are connected to mock modular and quantum modular forms -- under the action of an operator related to statistical physics and partition the…
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical numb…
