In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.
For the affine Hecke algebra of type A at roots of unity, we make explicit the correspondence between geometrically constructed simple modules and combinatorially constructed simple modules and prove the modular branching rule. The latter generalizes work by Vazirani.

We introduce a generalization of degenerate affine Hecke algebra, called wreath Hecke algebra, associated to an arbitrary finite group G. The simple modules of the wreath Hecke algebra and of its associated cyclotomic algebras are classified over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic p. The modular branching rules for these algebras are obtained, and when p does not divide the order of G, they are further identified with crystal graphs of integrable modules for quantum affine algebras. The key is to establish an equivalence between a module category of the (cyclotomic) wreath Hec…
We begin by deriving an action of the 0-Hecke algebra on standard reverse composition tableaux and use it to discover 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the natural refinements of Schur functions known as quasisymmetric Schur functions. Furthermore, we classify combinatorially which of these 0-Hecke modules are indecomposable. From here, we establish that the natural equivalence relation arising from our 0-Hecke action has equivalence classes that are isomorphic to subintervals of the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Focussing on the equivalence classes containin…
Let $G$ be a split reductive group over a $p$-adic field $F$. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup and $U$ the maximal unipotent subgroup of $B$. Let $ψ$ be a Whittaker character of $U$. Let $I$ be an Iwahori subgroup of $G$. We describe the Iwahori-Hecke algebra action on the Gelfand-Graev representation $(\mathrm{ind}_{U}^{G}ψ)^I$ by an explicit projective module. As a consequence, for $G=GL(n,F)$, we define and describe Bernstein-Zelevinsky derivatives of representations generated by $I$-fixed vectors in terms of the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules. Furthermore, using Lusztig's reduction…
We explore the modular representation theory of affine and cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. We provide an equivalence between the category of finite dimensional representations of the affine (resp. cyclotomic) Yokonuma-Hecke algebra and that of an algebra which is a direct sum of tensor products of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$ (resp. Ariki-Koike algebras). As one of the applications, the irreducible representations of affine and cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras are classified over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. Secondly, the modular branching rules for these alg…
We establish branching rules between some Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type B and their subalgebras which are defined as fixed subalgebras by involutions including Goldman involution. The Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type D is one of such fixed subalgebras. We also obtain branching rules between those fixed subalgebras and their intersection subalgebra. We determine basic sets of irreducible representations of those fixed subalgebras and their intersection subalgebra by making use of generalized Clifford theory.
We prove a conjecture of Kashiwara and Miemietz on canonical bases and branching rules of affine Hecke algebras of type D. The proof is similar to the proof of the type B case.
Ian Grojnowski has developed a purely algebraic way to connect the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras at an (l+1)-th root of unity to the highest weight theory of the affine Kac-Moody algebra of type A_l^(1). The present article is devoted to extending Grojnowski's machinery to the twisted case: we replace the affine Hecke algebras with the affine Hecke-Clifford superalgebras of Jones and Nazarov, and the Kac-Moody algebra A_l^(1) with the twisted algebra A_2l^(2). In particular, we obtain an algebraic construction purely in terms of the representation theory of Hecke-Clifford supe…
We prove a series of conjectures of Enomoto and Kashiwara on canonical bases and branching rules of affine Hecke algebras of type B. The main ingredient of the proof is a new graded Ext-algebra associated with quiver with involutions that we compute explicitly.
Ariki's and Grojnowski's approach to the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$ is applied to type $B$ with unequal parameters to obtain -- under certain restrictions on the eigenvalues of the lattice operators -- analogous multiplicity-one results and a classification of irreducibles with partial branching rules as in type $A$.
This is an expository article. We survey some fundamental trends in representation theory of symmetric groups and related objects which became apparent in the last fifteen years. The emphasis is on connections with Lie theory via categorification. We present results on branching rules and crystal graphs, decomposition numbers and canonical bases, graded representation theory, connections with cyclotomic and affine Hecke algebras, Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras, category ${\mathcal O}$, $W$-algebras, ...
Iwahori-Hecke algebras for the infinite series of complex reflection groups $G(r,p,n)$ were constructed recently in the work of Ariki and Koike, Broué and Malle, and Ariki. In this paper we give Murnaghan-Nakayama type formulas for computing the irreducible characters of these algebras. Our method is a generalization of that in our earlier paper in which we derived Murnaghan-Nakayama rules for the characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of the classical Weyl groups. In both papers we have been motivated by C. Greene, who gave a new derivation of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for irreducible …
We provide a combinatorial description of the coefficients appearing in the expansion of Hall-Littlewood polynomials in terms of monomial symmetric functions. We also give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Hall-Littlewood polynomials. For proving this we use galleries to calculate Satake coefficients and structure constants of spherical Hecke algebras with arbitrary parameters.
We prove Macdonald-type deformations of a number of well-known classical branching rules by employing identities for elliptic hypergeometric integrals and series. We also propose some conjectural branching rules and allied conjectures exhibiting a novel type of vanishing behaviour involving partitions with empty 2-cores.
We give a combinatorial description for when the Specht module of an arbitrary diagram admits a (complete) branching rule. This description, given in terms of the maximal rectangles of the diagram, generalizes all previously known branching rules for Specht modules, such as those given by Reiner and Shimozono for northwest diagrams and by the present author for forest diagrams.
Building on the work of P.N. Norton, we give combinatorial formulae for two maximal decompositions of the identity into orthogonal idempotents in the $0$-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group, $\mathbb{C}H_0(S_N)$. This construction is compatible with the branching from $S_{N-1}$ to $S_{N}$.
In this note, we formulate and prove branching rules of simple polynomial modules for the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. Our branching rules depend on the conjugacy class of the Borel subalgebra. A Gelfand-Tsetlin basis of a polynomial module associated to each Borel subalgebra is obtained in terms of generalized semistandard tableaux.
A root system is splint if it is a decomposition into a union of two root systems. Examples of such root systems arise naturally in studying embeddings of reductive Lie subalgebras into simple Lie algebras. Given a splint root system, one can try to understand its branching rule. In this paper we discuss methods to understand such branching rules, and give precise formulas for specific cases, including the restriction functor from the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$ to $\mathfrak{sl}_3$.
We prove a conjecture of Naito-Sagaki about a branching rule for the restriction of irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(2n,\mathbb{C})$ to $\mathfrak{sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$. The conjecture is in terms of certain Littelmann paths, with the embedding given by the folding of the type $A_{2n-1}$ Dynkin diagram.
We study algebras encoding stable range branching rules for the pairs of complex classical groups of the same type in the context of toric degenerations of spherical varieties. By lifting affine semigroup algebras constructed from combinatorial data of branching multiplicities, we obtain algebras having highest weight vectors in multiplicity spaces as their standard monomial type bases. In particular, we identify a family of distributive lattices and their associated Hibi algebras which can uniformly describe the stable range branching algebras for all the pairs we consider.
Let $\mathfrak S_{[i,j]}$ be the subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$ generated by adjacent transpositions $(i,i+1), \dotsc, (j-1,j)$, assuming $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. We give a combinatorial rule for evaluating induced sign characters of the type-$A$ Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ at all elements of the form $\sum_{w \in \mathfrak S_{[i,j]}} T_w$ and at all products of such elements. This includes evaluation at some elements $C'_w(q)$ of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis.
This note presents a procedure to determine the reduction of the irreducible and the induced characters of the symmetric group in terms of the irreducible and induced characters of the hyperoctahedral group Key Words: Symmetric Group, Hyperoctahedral group, Representations, Characters, Re- duction.
This paper provides a combinatorial dictionary between three sets of objects: Bernstein-Zelevinsky multisegments, Kleshchev multipartitions, and the irreducible modules of the affine Hecke algebra $H_n$ (for generic $q$). In particular, we compute the action of the crystal operator $\tilde{e}_i$ (a refinement of socle of Restriction) on an irreducible module both in terms of its parameterization by multisegments and by multipartitions. In other words, we give explicit crystal graph isomorphisms. A byproduct is the determination of which multisegments parameterize modules of the {\it cyclotomic…
Following the methods used by Derksen-Weyman in \cite{DW11} and Chindris in \cite{Chi08}, we use quiver theory to represent the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the branching rule for the diagonal embedding of $\gl(n)$ as the dimension of a weight space of semi-invariants. Using this, we prove their saturation and investigate when they are nonzero. We also show that for certain partitions the associated stretched polynomials satisfy the same conjectures as single Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We then provide a polytopal description of this multiplicity and show that its…
Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong defined Hecke insertion to formulate a combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_π$ indexed by permutations in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$ indexed by partitions. Patrias and Pylyavskyy introduced a shifted analogue of Hecke insertion whose natural domain is the set of maximal chains in a weak order on orbit closures of the orthogonal group acting on the complete flag variety. We construct a generalization of shifted Hecke insertion for maximal chains in an analogous weak order on orbit closu…
It is becoming increasingly clear that the supercharacter theory of the finite group of unipotent upper-triangular matrices has a rich combinatorial structure built on set-partitions that is analogous to the partition combinatorics of the classical representation theory of the symmetric group. This paper begins by exploring a connection to the ring of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables that mirrors the symmetric group's relationship with the ring of symmetric functions. It then also investigates some of the representation theoretic structure constants arising from the restriction, …
Let ${\mathcal H}_{q}(d)$ be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for the symmetric group, where $q$ is a primitive $l$th root of unity. In this paper we develop a theory of support varieties which detects natural homological properties such as the complexity of modules. The theory the authors develop has a canonical description in an affine space where computations are tractable. The ideas involve the interplay with the computation of the cohomology ring due to Benson, Erdmann and Mikaelian, the theory of vertices due to Dipper and Du, and branching results for cohomology by Hemmer and Nakano. Calculati…
We approach the problem of obtaining branching rules from the point of view of dual reductive pairs. Specifically, we obtain a stable branching rule for each of 10 classical families of symmetric pairs. In each case, the branching multiplicities are expressed in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Some of the formulas are classical and include, for example, Littlewood's restriction rule as a special case.
New exact modular branching rules are obtained for modules over the symmetric groups that are close to completely splittable modules. These results are based on some upper bounds for the Ext^1-spaces between simple modules.
Macdonald polynomials are orthogonal polynomials associated to root systems, and in the type A case, the symmetric kind is a common generalization of Schur functions, Macdonald spherical functions, and Jack polynomials. We use the combinatorics of alcove walks to calculate products of monomials and intertwining operators of the double affine Hecke algebra. From this, we obtain a product formula for Macdonald polynomials of general type.
Splint of root system for simple Lie algebra appears naturally in studies of (regular) embeddings of reductive subalgebras. Splint can be used to construct branching rules. We demonstrate that splint properties implementation drastically simplify calculations of branching coefficients.
We give a new representation-theoretic proof of the branching rule for Macdonald polynomials using the Etingof-Kirillov Jr. expression for Macdonald polynomials as traces of intertwiners of U_q(gl_n). In the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, we show that diagonal matrix elements of such intertwiners are given by application of Macdonald's operators to a simple kernel. An essential ingredient in the proof is a map between spherical parts of double affine Hecke algebras of different ranks based upon the Dunkl-Kasatani conjecture.
The representation theory of 0-Hecke-Clifford algebras as a degenerate case is not semisimple and also with rich combinatorial meaning. Bergeron et al. have proved that the Grothendieck ring of the category of finitely generated supermodules of 0-Hecke-Clifford algebras is isomorphic to the algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions defined by Stembridge. In this paper we further study the category of finitely generated projective supermodules and clarify the correspondence between it and the peak algebra of symmetric groups. In particular, two kinds of restriction rules for induced projective s…
We give a modular branching rule for certain wreath products as a generalization of Kleshchev's modular branching rule for the symmetric groups. Our result contains a modular branching rule for the complex reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$ (which are often called the generalized symmetric groups) in splitting fields for $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. Especially for $m=2$ (which is the case of the Weyl groups of type $B$), we can give a modular branching rule in any field. Our proof is elementary in that it is essentially a combination of Frobenius reciprocity, Mackey theorem, Clifford's theory and Klesh…
Given a complex simply connected simple algebraic group $G$ of exceptional type and a maximal parabolic subgroup $P \subset G$, we classify all triples $(G,P,H)$ such that $H \subset G$ is a maximal reductive subgroup acting spherically on $G/P$. In addition we derive branching rules for $\text{res}^G_H (V^*_{kω_i})$, $k \in \N$, where $ω_i$ is the fundamental weight associated to $P$. This is the first of two parts of a project to classify all such triples and corresponding branching rules for all simply connected simple algebraic groups.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
In this paper branching rules for the fundamental representations of the symplectic groups in positive characteristic are found. The submodule structure of the restrictions of the fundamental modules for the group $Sp_{2n}(K)$ to the naturally embedded subgroup $Sp_{2n-2}(K)$ is determined. As a corollary, inductive systems of fundamental representations for $Sp_{\infty}(K)$ are classified. The submodule structure of the fundamental Weyl modules is refined.
This article gives a proof of the Langlands-Shelstad fundamental lemma for the spherical Hecke algebra for every unramified p-adic reductive group G in large positive characteristic. The proof is based on the transfer principle for constructible motivic integration. To carry this out, we introduce a general family of partition functions attached to the complex L-group of the unramified p-adic group G. Our partition functions specialize to Kostant's q-partition function for complex connected groups and also specialize to the Langlands L-function of a spherical representation. These partition fu…
Let $\widetilde{G}$ be the $n$-fold covering group of the special linear group of degree two, over a non-Archimedean local field. We determine the decomposition into irreducibles of the restriction of the principal series representations of $\widetilde{G}$ to a maximal compact subgroup of $\widetilde{G}$.
An enhanced algebraic group $\uG$ of $G=\GL(V)$ over $\bbc$ is a product variety $\GL(V)\times V$, endowed with an enhanced cross product. Associated with a natural tensor representation of $\uG$, there are naturally Levi and parabolic Schur algebras $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{P}$ respectively. We precisely investigate their structures, and study the dualities on the enhanced tensor representations for variant groups and algebras. In this course, an algebraic model of so-called degenerate double Hecke algebras (DDHA) is produced, and becomes a powerful implement. The connection between $\math…
On restriction to the maximal compact subgroup $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$, an unramified principal series representation of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,F)$ decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional irreducibles each appearing with finite multiplicity. We describe a coarser decomposition into components which, although reducible in general, capture the equivalences between the irreducible constituents.
We construct functors categorifying the branching rules for $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ for $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $B_n$, $C_n$, and $D_n$ for the embeddings $so_{2n+1}\supset so_{2n-1}$, $sp_{2n}\supset sp_{2n-2}$, and $so_{2n}\supset so_{2n-2}$. We give the corresponding categorical Gelfand-Tsetlin basis.
The restriction of a supercuspidal representation of SL_2(k), for k a local nonarchimedean field, to a maximal compact subgroup decomposes as a multiplicity-free direct sum of irreducible representations. We explicitly describe this decomposition in the case that the residual characteristic is odd, and determine how the spectrum of this decomposition varies as a function of the parameters describing the supercuspidal representation.
For a few pairs $G\subset \hat G$ of reductive groups, we study the decomposition of irreducible $\hait G$-modules into $G$-modules. In particular, we observe the saturation property for all of these pairs.
We decompose the restriction of ramified principal series representations of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathrm{k})$ to its maximal compact subgroup $K=\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$. Its decomposition is dependent on the degree of ramification of the inducing characters and can be characterized in terms of filtrations of the Iwahori subgroup in $K$. We establish several irreducibility results and illustrate the decomposition with some examples.
Using Bruhat-Tits theory, we analyse the restriction of depth-zero representations of a semisimple simply connected $p$-adic group $G$ to a maximal compact subgroup $K$. We prove the coincidence of branching rules within classes of Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representations. Furthermore, we show that under obvious compatibility conditions, the restriction to $K$ of a Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representation of $G$ intertwines with the restriction of a depth-zero principal series representation in infinitely many distinct components of arbitrarily large depth. Several qualitative and qua…
