We approach the problem of obtaining branching rules from the point of view of dual reductive pairs. Specifically, we obtain a stable branching rule for each of 10 classical families of symmetric pairs. In each case, the branching multiplicities are expressed in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Some of the formulas are classical and include, for example, Littlewood's restriction rule as a special case.
New exact modular branching rules are obtained for modules over the symmetric groups that are close to completely splittable modules. These results are based on some upper bounds for the Ext^1-spaces between simple modules.
Splint of root system for simple Lie algebra appears naturally in studies of (regular) embeddings of reductive subalgebras. Splint can be used to construct branching rules. We demonstrate that splint properties implementation drastically simplify calculations of branching coefficients.
For the affine Hecke algebra of type A at roots of unity, we make explicit the correspondence between geometrically constructed simple modules and combinatorially constructed simple modules and prove the modular branching rule. The latter generalizes work by Vazirani.

Given a complex simply connected simple algebraic group $G$ of exceptional type and a maximal parabolic subgroup $P \subset G$, we classify all triples $(G,P,H)$ such that $H \subset G$ is a maximal reductive subgroup acting spherically on $G/P$. In addition we derive branching rules for $\text{res}^G_H (V^*_{kω_i})$, $k \in \N$, where $ω_i$ is the fundamental weight associated to $P$. This is the first of two parts of a project to classify all such triples and corresponding branching rules for all simply connected simple algebraic groups.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
In this paper branching rules for the fundamental representations of the symplectic groups in positive characteristic are found. The submodule structure of the restrictions of the fundamental modules for the group $Sp_{2n}(K)$ to the naturally embedded subgroup $Sp_{2n-2}(K)$ is determined. As a corollary, inductive systems of fundamental representations for $Sp_{\infty}(K)$ are classified. The submodule structure of the fundamental Weyl modules is refined.
Let $\widetilde{G}$ be the $n$-fold covering group of the special linear group of degree two, over a non-Archimedean local field. We determine the decomposition into irreducibles of the restriction of the principal series representations of $\widetilde{G}$ to a maximal compact subgroup of $\widetilde{G}$.
We study the restriction to Sylow subgroups of irreducible characters of symmetric groups. In particular, we focus our attention on constituents of degree greater than 1. Our main result is a wide generalization of Theorem 3.1 of Giannelli and Navarro, "Restricting irreducible characters to Sylow p-subgroups".
On restriction to the maximal compact subgroup $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$, an unramified principal series representation of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,F)$ decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional irreducibles each appearing with finite multiplicity. We describe a coarser decomposition into components which, although reducible in general, capture the equivalences between the irreducible constituents.
We study branching laws for a classical group $G$ and a symmetric subgroup $H$. Our approach is through the {\it branching algebra}, the algebra of covariants for $H$ in the regular functions on the natural torus bundle over the flag manifold for $G$. We give concrete descriptions of (natural subalgebras of) the branching algebra using classical invariant theory. In this context, it turns out that the ten classes of classical symmetric pairs $(G,H)$ are associated in pairs, $(G,H)$ and $(H',G')$, and that the (partial) branching algebra for $(G,H)$ also describes a branching law from $H'$ to $…
The restriction of a supercuspidal representation of SL_2(k), for k a local nonarchimedean field, to a maximal compact subgroup decomposes as a multiplicity-free direct sum of irreducible representations. We explicitly describe this decomposition in the case that the residual characteristic is odd, and determine how the spectrum of this decomposition varies as a function of the parameters describing the supercuspidal representation.
We decompose the restriction of ramified principal series representations of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathrm{k})$ to its maximal compact subgroup $K=\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$. Its decomposition is dependent on the degree of ramification of the inducing characters and can be characterized in terms of filtrations of the Iwahori subgroup in $K$. We establish several irreducibility results and illustrate the decomposition with some examples.
We give a modular branching rule for certain wreath products as a generalization of Kleshchev's modular branching rule for the symmetric groups. Our result contains a modular branching rule for the complex reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$ (which are often called the generalized symmetric groups) in splitting fields for $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. Especially for $m=2$ (which is the case of the Weyl groups of type $B$), we can give a modular branching rule in any field. Our proof is elementary in that it is essentially a combination of Frobenius reciprocity, Mackey theorem, Clifford's theory and Klesh…
In this paper we consider the unitary symmetric spaces of the form X=U(p,q)/U(1)U(p,q-1) and their discrete series representations. Inspired by the work of A.Venkatesh and Y.Sekellarides on L-groups of p-adic spherical spaces we formulate and prove natural relative branching laws for the restriction to smaller subgroups of the same type and corresponding unitary spaces. We think of this as steps to formulation and proving Gan Gross Prasad conjectures for unitary spaces. Using period integral and some results of T.Kobayashi we prove an analogue of thesis conjectures.
We prove Macdonald-type deformations of a number of well-known classical branching rules by employing identities for elliptic hypergeometric integrals and series. We also propose some conjectural branching rules and allied conjectures exhibiting a novel type of vanishing behaviour involving partitions with empty 2-cores.
We give a combinatorial description for when the Specht module of an arbitrary diagram admits a (complete) branching rule. This description, given in terms of the maximal rectangles of the diagram, generalizes all previously known branching rules for Specht modules, such as those given by Reiner and Shimozono for northwest diagrams and by the present author for forest diagrams.
Using Bruhat-Tits theory, we analyse the restriction of depth-zero representations of a semisimple simply connected $p$-adic group $G$ to a maximal compact subgroup $K$. We prove the coincidence of branching rules within classes of Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representations. Furthermore, we show that under obvious compatibility conditions, the restriction to $K$ of a Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representation of $G$ intertwines with the restriction of a depth-zero principal series representation in infinitely many distinct components of arbitrarily large depth. Several qualitative and qua…
In this note, we formulate and prove branching rules of simple polynomial modules for the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. Our branching rules depend on the conjugacy class of the Borel subalgebra. A Gelfand-Tsetlin basis of a polynomial module associated to each Borel subalgebra is obtained in terms of generalized semistandard tableaux.
Building on prior work, we analyze the decomposition of the restriction of an irreducible representation of SL_2(k), for k a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic, to a maximal compact subgroup K. The pattern of the decomposition varies between principal series and different supercuspidal representations, whereas the K-representations which occur in the "tail end" of these decompositions are precisely those occurring in the decomposition of depth-zero supercuspidal representations. Various applications are considered.
In this paper we study branching laws for certain unitary representations. This is done on the smooth vectors via a version of the {\it period integrals}, studied in number theory, and also closely connected to the {\it symmetry-breaking operators}, introduced by T.~Kobayashi. We exhibit non-vanishing symmetry breaking operators for the restriction of a representation $Π$ in the discrete spectrum for real hyperboloids to representations of smaller orthogonal groups. In the last part we discuss some conjectures for the restriction of representations in Arthur packets containing the representati…
A root system is splint if it is a decomposition into a union of two root systems. Examples of such root systems arise naturally in studying embeddings of reductive Lie subalgebras into simple Lie algebras. Given a splint root system, one can try to understand its branching rule. In this paper we discuss methods to understand such branching rules, and give precise formulas for specific cases, including the restriction functor from the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$ to $\mathfrak{sl}_3$.
We prove a conjecture of Naito-Sagaki about a branching rule for the restriction of irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(2n,\mathbb{C})$ to $\mathfrak{sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$. The conjecture is in terms of certain Littelmann paths, with the embedding given by the folding of the type $A_{2n-1}$ Dynkin diagram.
Let n be a positive integer and let Sigma_n be the symmetric group of degree n. Let S^lambda be the Specht module for Sigma_n corresponding to a partition lambda of n, defined over a field F of odd characteristic. We find the indecomposable components of the restriction of S^lambda to Sigma_{n-1}, and of the induction of S^lambda to Sigma_{n+1}. Namely, if b and B are block idempotents of FSigma_{n-1} and FSigma_{n+1} respectively, then the modules S^lambda b and S^lambda B are 0 or indecomposable. We give examples to show that the assumption that F has odd characteristic cannot be dropped.
We study algebras encoding stable range branching rules for the pairs of complex classical groups of the same type in the context of toric degenerations of spherical varieties. By lifting affine semigroup algebras constructed from combinatorial data of branching multiplicities, we obtain algebras having highest weight vectors in multiplicity spaces as their standard monomial type bases. In particular, we identify a family of distributive lattices and their associated Hibi algebras which can uniformly describe the stable range branching algebras for all the pairs we consider.
We construct functors categorifying the branching rules for $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ for $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $B_n$, $C_n$, and $D_n$ for the embeddings $so_{2n+1}\supset so_{2n-1}$, $sp_{2n}\supset sp_{2n-2}$, and $so_{2n}\supset so_{2n-2}$. We give the corresponding categorical Gelfand-Tsetlin basis.
Branching rules for the restriction of regular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathfrak{o}/\mathfrak{p}^r)$ to $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathfrak{o}/\mathfrak{p}^r).$
For a few pairs $G\subset \hat G$ of reductive groups, we study the decomposition of irreducible $\hait G$-modules into $G$-modules. In particular, we observe the saturation property for all of these pairs.
In this article we investigate the positivity of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups when $p = 3$. In particular, we complete the discussion begun by Giannelli and the author in arXiv:1712.02642 (J. Algebra) and developed in arXiv:1909.09446 (J. London Math. Soc.) concerning the case of odd primes.
This note presents a procedure to determine the reduction of the irreducible and the induced characters of the symmetric group in terms of the irreducible and induced characters of the hyperoctahedral group Key Words: Symmetric Group, Hyperoctahedral group, Representations, Characters, Re- duction.
In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.
Let S be a principally embedded sl_2 subalgebra in sl_n for n > 2. A special case of results of the third author and Gregg Zuckerman implies that there exists a positive integer b(n) such that for any finite-dimensional irreducible sl_n representation, V, there exists an irreducible S-representation embedding in V with dimension at most b(n). In a 2017 paper (joint with Hassan Lhou), they prove that b(n)=n is the sharpest possible bound, and also address embeddings other than the principal one. These results concerning embeddings may by interpreted as statements about plethysm. Then, a well kn…
We give a new representation-theoretic proof of the branching rule for Macdonald polynomials using the Etingof-Kirillov Jr. expression for Macdonald polynomials as traces of intertwiners of U_q(gl_n). In the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, we show that diagonal matrix elements of such intertwiners are given by application of Macdonald's operators to a simple kernel. An essential ingredient in the proof is a map between spherical parts of double affine Hecke algebras of different ranks based upon the Dunkl-Kasatani conjecture.
Let $G$ be a noncompact connected simple Lie group, and $(G,G^Γ)$ a Klein four symmetric pair. In this paper, the author shows a necessary condition for the discrete decomposability of unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules for Klein for symmetric pairs. Precisely, if certain conditions hold for $(G,G^Γ)$, there does not exist any unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-module that is discretely decomposable as a $(\mathfrak{g}^Γ,K^Γ)$-module. As an application, for $G=\mathrm{E}_{6(-14)}$, the author obtains a complete classification of Klein four symmetric pairs $(G,G^Γ)$ with $G^Γ$ n…
Following a question of Vinberg, a general method to construct monomial bases for finite-dimensional irreducible representations of a reductive Lie algebra was developed in a series of papers by Feigin, Fourier, and Littelmann. Relying on this method, we construct monomial bases of multiplicity spaces associated with the restriction of the representation to a reductive subalgebra. As an application, we produce monomial bases for representations of the general linear and symplectic Lie algebras associated with natural chains of subalgebras. We also show that our basis in type A is related to bo…
We study branching multiplicity spaces of complex classical groups in terms of GL(2) representations. In particular, we show how combinatorics of GL(2) representations are intertwined to make branching rules under the restriction of GL(n) to GL(n-2). We also discuss analogous results for the symplectic and orthogonal groups.
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime and let $n$ be a natural number. In this article we describe the irreducible constituents of the induced characters $ϕ\big\uparrow^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for arbitrary linear characters $ϕ$ of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, generalising earlier results of the authors. By doing so, we introduce Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.
In this paper we construct a generalization of the classical Steinberg section for the quotient map of a semisimple group with respect to the conjugation action. We then give various applications of our construction including the construction of a sort of Gelfand Zetlin basis for a generic irreducible representation of quantum GL(n) at odd roots of unity.
This note is a write-up of a talk given by the author at the Meeting of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Matematica in July 2012. We describe Jaeger's HOMFLY-PT expansion of the Kauffman polynomial and how to generalize it to other quantum invariants using the so-called "branching rules" for Lie algebra representations. We present a program which aims to construct Jaeger expansions for link homology theories.
Following the methods used by Derksen-Weyman in \cite{DW11} and Chindris in \cite{Chi08}, we use quiver theory to represent the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the branching rule for the diagonal embedding of $\gl(n)$ as the dimension of a weight space of semi-invariants. Using this, we prove their saturation and investigate when they are nonzero. We also show that for certain partitions the associated stretched polynomials satisfy the same conjectures as single Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We then provide a polytopal description of this multiplicity and show that its…
Let $G$ be a symplectic or special orthogonal group, let $H$ be a connected reductive subgroup of $G$, and let $X$ be a flag variety of $G$. We classify all triples $(G,H,X)$ such that the natural action of $H$ on $X$ is spherical. For each of these triples, we determine the restrictions to $H$ of all irreducible representations of $G$ realized in spaces of sections of homogeneous line bundles on $X$.
We define a quotient of the category of finitely generated modules over the cyclotomic Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebra for type An and show it has a module category structure over a direct sum of certain cyclotomic Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of type An-1, this way categorifying the branching rules for the inclusion of sl(n) in sl(n+1). Using this we give a new, elementary proof of Khovanov-Lauda cyclotomic conjecture. We show that continuing recursively gives the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis for type An. As an application we prove a conjecture of Mackaay, Stosic and Vaz concerning categorical W…
We consider the (projective) representations of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a symmetric tube domain $V\oplus iΩ$ that are obtained by analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series. For a representation corresponding to a discrete point in the Wallach set, we find the decomposition under restriction to the identity component of $GL(Ω)$. Using Riesz distributions, an explicit intertwining operator is constructed as an analytic continuation of an integral operator. The density for the Plancherel measure involves quotients of $Γ$-functions and the $c$-function for a symmet…
Specht modules for an Ariki-Koike algebra have been investigated recently in the context of cellular algebras. Thus, these modules are defined as quotient modules of certain ``permutation'' modules, that is, defined as ``cell modules'' via cellular bases. We shall introduce in this paper Specht modules for an Ariki-Koike algebra as submodules of those ``permutation'' modules and investigate their basic properties such as Standard Basis Theorem and the ordinary Branching Theorem, generalizing several classical constructions for type $A$. The second part of the paper moves on looking for Kleshch…
The graded-fermion algebra and quasi-spin formalism are introduced and applied to obtain the $gl(m|n)\downarrow osp(m|n)$ branching rules for the "two-column" tensor irreducible representations of gl(m|n), for the case $m\leq n (n > 2)$. In the case m < n, all such irreducible representations of gl(m|n) are shown to be completely reducible as representations of osp(m|n). This is also shown to be true for the case m=n except for the "spin-singlet" representations which contain an indecomposable representation of osp(m|n) with composition length 3. These branching rules are given in fully explic…
