We study branching laws for a classical group $G$ and a symmetric subgroup $H$. Our approach is through the {\it branching algebra}, the algebra of covariants for $H$ in the regular functions on the natural torus bundle over the flag manifold for $G$. We give concrete descriptions of (natural subalgebras of) the branching algebra using classical invariant theory. In this context, it turns out that the ten classes of classical symmetric pairs $(G,H)$ are associated in pairs, $(G,H)$ and $(H',G')$, and that the (partial) branching algebra for $(G,H)$ also describes a branching law from $H'$ to $G'$. (However, the second branching law may involve certain infinite-dimensional highest weight modules for $H'$.) To highlight the fact that these algebras describe two branching laws simultaneously, we call them {\it reciprocity algebras}. Our description of the reciprocity algebras reveals that they all are related to the tensor product algebra for $GL_n$. This relation is especially strong in the {\it stable range}. We give quite explicit descriptions of reciprocity algebras in the stable range in terms of the tensor product algebra for $GL_n$. This is the structure lying behind formulas for branching multiplicities in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
We show that an adaptation of Landrock's Lemma for symmetric algebras also holds for cellular algebras and BGG algebras. This is a result relating the radical layers of any two projective modules. The reason it holds in our setting is that there is a duality between injective hulls and projective covers. As a corollary we deduce that BGG reciprocity respects Loewy structure.
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space over a $p$-adic field $F$, the algebraic groups $G$ and $H$ being assumed semisimple of relative rank $1$. One of the branching problems for the Steinberg representation $\St_G$ of $G$ is the determination of the dimension of the intertwining space ${\rm Hom}_H (\St_G ,π)$, for any irreducible representation $π$ of $H$. In this work we do not compute this dimension, but show how it is related to the dimensions of some other intertwining spaces ${\rm Hom}_{K_i} ({\tilde π} ,1)$, for a certain finite family $K_i$, $i=1,...,r$, of anisotropic subgroups of …
Slicing a module into semisimple ones is useful to study modules. Loewy structures provide a means of doing so. To establish the Loewy structures of projective modules over a finite dimensional symmetric algebra over a field $F$, the Landrock lemma is a primary tool. The lemma and its corollary relate radical layers of projective indecomposable modules to radical layers of the $F$-duals of those modules ("dual symmetry") and to socle layers of those modules ("reciprocity"). We generalize these results to an arbitrary finite dimensional algebra $A$. Our main theorem, which is the same as the La…
We give a modular branching rule for certain wreath products as a generalization of Kleshchev's modular branching rule for the symmetric groups. Our result contains a modular branching rule for the complex reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$ (which are often called the generalized symmetric groups) in splitting fields for $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. Especially for $m=2$ (which is the case of the Weyl groups of type $B$), we can give a modular branching rule in any field. Our proof is elementary in that it is essentially a combination of Frobenius reciprocity, Mackey theorem, Clifford's theory and Klesh…
We approach the problem of obtaining branching rules from the point of view of dual reductive pairs. Specifically, we obtain a stable branching rule for each of 10 classical families of symmetric pairs. In each case, the branching multiplicities are expressed in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Some of the formulas are classical and include, for example, Littlewood's restriction rule as a special case.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
We study the restriction to Sylow subgroups of irreducible characters of symmetric groups. In particular, we focus our attention on constituents of degree greater than 1. Our main result is a wide generalization of Theorem 3.1 of Giannelli and Navarro, "Restricting irreducible characters to Sylow p-subgroups".
In this paper we consider the unitary symmetric spaces of the form X=U(p,q)/U(1)U(p,q-1) and their discrete series representations. Inspired by the work of A.Venkatesh and Y.Sekellarides on L-groups of p-adic spherical spaces we formulate and prove natural relative branching laws for the restriction to smaller subgroups of the same type and corresponding unitary spaces. We think of this as steps to formulation and proving Gan Gross Prasad conjectures for unitary spaces. Using period integral and some results of T.Kobayashi we prove an analogue of thesis conjectures.
In this paper we study branching laws for certain unitary representations. This is done on the smooth vectors via a version of the {\it period integrals}, studied in number theory, and also closely connected to the {\it symmetry-breaking operators}, introduced by T.~Kobayashi. We exhibit non-vanishing symmetry breaking operators for the restriction of a representation $Π$ in the discrete spectrum for real hyperboloids to representations of smaller orthogonal groups. In the last part we discuss some conjectures for the restriction of representations in Arthur packets containing the representati…
Let S be a principally embedded sl_2 subalgebra in sl_n for n > 2. A special case of results of the third author and Gregg Zuckerman implies that there exists a positive integer b(n) such that for any finite-dimensional irreducible sl_n representation, V, there exists an irreducible S-representation embedding in V with dimension at most b(n). In a 2017 paper (joint with Hassan Lhou), they prove that b(n)=n is the sharpest possible bound, and also address embeddings other than the principal one. These results concerning embeddings may by interpreted as statements about plethysm. Then, a well kn…
In this article we investigate the positivity of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups when $p = 3$. In particular, we complete the discussion begun by Giannelli and the author in arXiv:1712.02642 (J. Algebra) and developed in arXiv:1909.09446 (J. London Math. Soc.) concerning the case of odd primes.
We give a description of the irreducible constituents of the restriction to Sylow 2-subgroups of irreducible characters of symmetric groups labelled by hook partitions.
Let $G$ be a noncompact connected simple Lie group, and $(G,G^Γ)$ a Klein four symmetric pair. In this paper, the author shows a necessary condition for the discrete decomposability of unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules for Klein for symmetric pairs. Precisely, if certain conditions hold for $(G,G^Γ)$, there does not exist any unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-module that is discretely decomposable as a $(\mathfrak{g}^Γ,K^Γ)$-module. As an application, for $G=\mathrm{E}_{6(-14)}$, the author obtains a complete classification of Klein four symmetric pairs $(G,G^Γ)$ with $G^Γ$ n…
New exact modular branching rules are obtained for modules over the symmetric groups that are close to completely splittable modules. These results are based on some upper bounds for the Ext^1-spaces between simple modules.
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime and let $n$ be a natural number. In this article we describe the irreducible constituents of the induced characters $ϕ\big\uparrow^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for arbitrary linear characters $ϕ$ of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, generalising earlier results of the authors. By doing so, we introduce Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.
We consider the (projective) representations of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a symmetric tube domain $V\oplus iΩ$ that are obtained by analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series. For a representation corresponding to a discrete point in the Wallach set, we find the decomposition under restriction to the identity component of $GL(Ω)$. Using Riesz distributions, an explicit intertwining operator is constructed as an analytic continuation of an integral operator. The density for the Plancherel measure involves quotients of $Γ$-functions and the $c$-function for a symmet…
We give branching formulas from $so(7,\mathbb{C})$ to $\mathfrak{g}_2$ for generalized Verma modules attached to $\mathfrak{g}_2$-compatible parabolic subalgebras of $so(7,\mathbb{C})$, and branching formulas from $\mathfrak{g}_2$ to $sl(3,\mathbb{C})$ for generalized Verma modules attached to $sl(3,\mathbb{C})$-compatible parabolic subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}_2$ respectively, under some assumptions on the parameters of generalized Verma modules.
Let $\gg$ be the Lie algebra of a compact Lie group and let $θ$ be any automorphism of $\gg$. Let $\gk$ denote the fixed point subalgebra $\gg^θ$. In this paper we present LiE programs that, for any finite dimensional complex representation $π$ of $\gg$, give the explicit branching $π|_\gk$ of $π$ on $\gk$. Cases of special interest include the cases where $θ$ has order 2 (corresponding to compact riemannian symmetric spaces $G/K$), where $θ$ has order 3 (corresponding to compact nearly--kaehler homogeneous spaces $G/K$), where $θ$ has order 5 (which include the fascinating 5--symmetric space …
This note presents a procedure to determine the reduction of the irreducible and the induced characters of the symmetric group in terms of the irreducible and induced characters of the hyperoctahedral group Key Words: Symmetric Group, Hyperoctahedral group, Representations, Characters, Re- duction.
The unitary principal series representations of $G=GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ induced from a character of the maximal parabolic subgroup $P=(GL(1,\mathbb{C})\times GL(n-1,\mathbb{C}))\ltimes\mathbb{C}^{n-1}$ attain the minimal Gelfand--Kirillov dimension among all infinite-dimensional unitary representations of $G$. We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of these representations to symmetric subgroups of $G$.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the supercharacter theory of the finite group of unipotent upper-triangular matrices has a rich combinatorial structure built on set-partitions that is analogous to the partition combinatorics of the classical representation theory of the symmetric group. This paper begins by exploring a connection to the ring of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables that mirrors the symmetric group's relationship with the ring of symmetric functions. It then also investigates some of the representation theoretic structure constants arising from the restriction, …
In this paper we will derive an explicit description of the genuine projective representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ using Dirac cohomology and the branching graph for the irreducible genuine projective representations of $S_n$. In 2015 Ciubotaru and He, using the extended Dirac index, showed that the characters of the projective representations of $S_n$ are related to the characters of elliptic graded modules. We derived the branching graph using Dirac theory and combinatorics relating to the cohomology of Borel varieties $\mathcal{B}_e$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ and were able to use Dirac coh…
We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of minimal holomorphic representations to symmetric subgroups in the case where the restriction is discretely decomposable. For holomorphic pairs the minimal holomorphic representation decomposes into a direct sum of lowest weight representations which is made explicit. For non-holomorphic pairs the restriction is shown to be irreducible and identified with a known representation. We further study a conjecture by Kobayashi on the behaviour of associated varieties under restriction and confirm this conjecture in the setting of this paper.
The author classifies Klein four symmetric pairs of holomorphic type for the non-compact Lie group of Hermitian type $\mathrm{E}_{7(-25)}$, and applies the results to branching rules.
There are two approaches to projective representation theory of symmetric and alternating groups, which are powerful enough to work for modular representations. One is based on Sergeev duality, which connects projective representation theory of the symmetric group and representation theory of the algebraic supergroup $Q(n)$ via appropriate Schur (super)algebras and Schur functors. The second approach follows the work of Grojnowski for classical affine and cyclotomic Hecke algebras and connects projective representation theory of symmetric groups in characteristic $p$ to the crystal graph of th…
This is an expository article. We survey some fundamental trends in representation theory of symmetric groups and related objects which became apparent in the last fifteen years. The emphasis is on connections with Lie theory via categorification. We present results on branching rules and crystal graphs, decomposition numbers and canonical bases, graded representation theory, connections with cyclotomic and affine Hecke algebras, Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras, category ${\mathcal O}$, $W$-algebras, ...
We say a representation V of a group G has stability if its multiplicities m^{G}_{V}(λ) is dependent only on some equivalence class of λfor a sufficiently large parameter λ. In this paper, we prove that the restriction of a holomorphic discrete series representation with respect to any holomorphic symmetric pairs has stability. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on multiplicity-freeness of the branching laws in this setting. This condition is same as the sufficient condition given by the theory of visible actions. We prove a general theorem before we show the stabilit…
Let $\mathbb D=G/K$ be a complex bounded symmetric domain of tube type in a Jordan algebra $V_{\mathbb C}$, and let $D=H/L =\mathbb D\cap V$ be its real form in a Jordan algebra $V\subset V_{\mathbb C}$. The analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series on $\mathbb D$ forms a family of interesting representations of $G$. We consider the restriction on $D$ of the scalar holomorphic representations of $G$, as a representation of $H$. The unitary part of the restriction map gives then a generalization of the Segal-Bargmann transform. The group $L$ is a spherical subgroup of $K$ and we …
Consider the restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a Lie group $G$ to its subgroup $H$. Kirillov's revolutionary idea on the orbit method suggests that the multiplicity of an irreducible $H$-module $ν$ occurring in the restriction $π|_H$ could be read from the coadjoint action of $H$ on $O^G \cap pr^{-1}(O^H)$ provided $π$ and $ν$ are "geometric quantizations" of a $G$-coadjoint orbit $O^G$ and an $H$-coadjoint orbit $O^H$,respectively, where $pr: \sqrt{-1} g^{\ast} \to \sqrt{-1} h^{\ast}$ is the projection dual to the inclusion $h \subset g$ of Lie algebras. Such results…
Let $G$ be a complex simple Lie group, and let $U \subseteq G$ be a maximal compact subgroup. Assume that $G$ admits a homogenous space $X=G/Q=U/K$ which is a compact Hermitian symmetric space. Let $\mathscr{L} \rightarrow X$ be the ample line bundle which generates the Picard group of $X$. In this paper we study the restrictions to $K$ of the family $(H^0(X, \mathscr{L}^k))_{k \in \N}$ of irreducible $G$-representations. We describe explicitly the moment polytopes for the moment maps $X \rightarrow \fk^*$ associated to positive integer multiples of the Kostant-Kirillov symplectic form on $X$,…
Building on the work of P.N. Norton, we give combinatorial formulae for two maximal decompositions of the identity into orthogonal idempotents in the $0$-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group, $\mathbb{C}H_0(S_N)$. This construction is compatible with the branching from $S_{N-1}$ to $S_{N}$.
This is a second paper in a series devoted to the minimal unitary representation of O(p,q). By explicit methods from conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, we find the branching law corresponding to restricting the minimal unitary representation to natural symmetric subgroups. In the case of purely discrete spectrum we obtain the full spectrum and give an explicit Parseval-Plancherel formula, and in the general case we construct an infinite discrete spectrum.
Part I. We prove a one-to-one correspondence between differential symmetry breaking operators for equivariant vector bundles over two homogeneous spaces and certain homomorphisms for representations of two Lie algebras, in connection with branching problems of the restriction of representations. We develop a new method (F-method) based on the algebraic Fourier transform for generalized Verma modules, which characterizes differential symmetry breaking operators by means of certain systems of partial differential equations. In contrast to the setting of real flag varieties, continuous symmetry b…
