We introduce a generalization of degenerate affine Hecke algebra, called wreath Hecke algebra, associated to an arbitrary finite group G. The simple modules of the wreath Hecke algebra and of its associated cyclotomic algebras are classified over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic p. The modular branching rules for these algebras are obtained, and when p does not divide the order of G, they are further identified with crystal graphs of integrable modules for quantum affine algebras. The key is to establish an equivalence between a module category of the (cyclotomic) wreath Hecke algebra and its suitable counterpart for the degenerate affine Hecke algebra.
Generalizing the centralizer construction of Molev and Olshanski on symmetric groups, we study the structures of the centralizer $\mZ_{m,n}$ of the wreath product $G_{n-m}$ in the group algebra of $G_n$ for any $n\geq m$. We establish the connection between $\mZ_{m,n}$ and a generalization of degenerate affine Hecke algebras introduced in our earlier work.
We establish bounds for the representation dimension of skew group algebras and wreath products. Using this, we obtain bounds for the representation dimension of a block of a Hecke algebra of type A, in terms of the weight of the block. This includes certain blocks of group algebras of symmetric groups.
We study the structure and representation theory of affine wreath product algebras and their cyclotomic quotients. These algebras, which appear naturally in Heisenberg categorification, simultaneously unify and generalize many important algebras appearing in the literature. In particular, special cases include degenerate affine Hecke algebras, affine Sergeev algebras (degenerate affine Hecke-Clifford algebras), and wreath Hecke algebras. In some cases, specializing the results of the current paper recovers known results, but with unified and simplified proofs. In other cases, we obtain new res…
To each symmetric algebra we associate a family of algebras that we call quantum affine wreath algebras. These can be viewed both as symmetric algebra deformations of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$ and as quantum deformations of affine wreath algebras. We study the structure theory of these new algebras and their natural cyclotomic quotients.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
The Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}_{n,k}$ of the group pairs $(S_{kn}, S_k\wr S_n)$ can be endowed with a filtration with respect to the orbit structures of the elements of $S_{kn}$ relative to the action of $S_{kn}$ on the set of $k$-partitions of $\{1,\dots,kn\}$. We prove that the structure constants of the associated filtered algebra $\mathcal{F}_{n,k} $ is independent of $n$. The stability property enables the construction of a universal algebra $\mathcal{F}$ to govern the algebras $\mathcal{F}_{n,k}$. We also prove that the structure constants of the algebras $\mathcal{H}_{n,k}$ are polynom…
We associate a monoidal category $\mathcal{H}_B$, defined in terms of planar diagrams, to any graded Frobenius superalgebra $B$. This category acts naturally on modules over the wreath product algebras associated to $B$. To $B$ we also associate a (quantum) lattice Heisenberg algebra $\mathfrak{h}_B$. We show that, provided $B$ is not concentrated in degree zero, the Grothendieck group of $\mathcal{H}_B$ is isomorphic, as an algebra, to $\mathfrak{h}_B$. For specific choices of Frobenius algebra $B$, we recover existing results, including those of Khovanov and Cautis--Licata. We also prove tha…
We consider RoCK (or Rouquier) blocks of symmetric groups and Hecke algebras at roots of unity. We prove a conjecture of Turner asserting that a certain idempotent truncation of a RoCK block of weight $d$ of a symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$ defined over a field $F$ of characteristic $e$ is Morita equivalent to the principal block of the wreath product $\mathfrak S_e \wr \mathfrak S_d$. This generalises a theorem of Chuang and Kessar that applies to RoCK blocks with abelian defect groups. Our proof relies crucially on an isomorphism between $F\mathfrak S_n$ and a cyclotomic Khovanov-Lauda-Rouq…
Inspired by the work [Ra1], we directly give a complete classification of irreducible calibrated representations of affine Yokonuma-Hecke algebras $\widehat{Y}_{r,n}(q)$ over $\mathbb{C},$ which are indexed by $r$-tuples of placed skew shapes. We then develop several applications of this result. In the appendix, inspired by [Ru], we classify and construct irreducible completely splittable representations of degenerate affine Yokonuma-Hecke algebras $D_{r,n}$ and the wreath product $(\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z})\wr \mathfrak{S}_{n}$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p> 0$ such th…
For the affine Hecke algebra of type A at roots of unity, we make explicit the correspondence between geometrically constructed simple modules and combinatorially constructed simple modules and prove the modular branching rule. The latter generalizes work by Vazirani.

We establish branching rules between some Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type B and their subalgebras which are defined as fixed subalgebras by involutions including Goldman involution. The Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type D is one of such fixed subalgebras. We also obtain branching rules between those fixed subalgebras and their intersection subalgebra. We determine basic sets of irreducible representations of those fixed subalgebras and their intersection subalgebra by making use of generalized Clifford theory.
In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.
Ian Grojnowski has developed a purely algebraic way to connect the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras at an (l+1)-th root of unity to the highest weight theory of the affine Kac-Moody algebra of type A_l^(1). The present article is devoted to extending Grojnowski's machinery to the twisted case: we replace the affine Hecke algebras with the affine Hecke-Clifford superalgebras of Jones and Nazarov, and the Kac-Moody algebra A_l^(1) with the twisted algebra A_2l^(2). In particular, we obtain an algebraic construction purely in terms of the representation theory of Hecke-Clifford supe…
We give a modular branching rule for certain wreath products as a generalization of Kleshchev's modular branching rule for the symmetric groups. Our result contains a modular branching rule for the complex reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$ (which are often called the generalized symmetric groups) in splitting fields for $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. Especially for $m=2$ (which is the case of the Weyl groups of type $B$), we can give a modular branching rule in any field. Our proof is elementary in that it is essentially a combination of Frobenius reciprocity, Mackey theorem, Clifford's theory and Klesh…
Let $G$ be a split reductive group over a $p$-adic field $F$. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup and $U$ the maximal unipotent subgroup of $B$. Let $ψ$ be a Whittaker character of $U$. Let $I$ be an Iwahori subgroup of $G$. We describe the Iwahori-Hecke algebra action on the Gelfand-Graev representation $(\mathrm{ind}_{U}^{G}ψ)^I$ by an explicit projective module. As a consequence, for $G=GL(n,F)$, we define and describe Bernstein-Zelevinsky derivatives of representations generated by $I$-fixed vectors in terms of the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules. Furthermore, using Lusztig's reduction…
Building on the work of P.N. Norton, we give combinatorial formulae for two maximal decompositions of the identity into orthogonal idempotents in the $0$-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group, $\mathbb{C}H_0(S_N)$. This construction is compatible with the branching from $S_{N-1}$ to $S_{N}$.
We give a new proof for the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the wreath product $F \wr S_{n}$ where $F$ is a finite group. Our proof does not use symmetric functions but more elementary representation theoretic tools. We also derive a branching rule for inducing the natural embedding of $F\wr S_{n}$ to $F\wr S_{n+1}$. We then apply the generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule for computing the ordinary quiver of the category $F \wr {\bf FI}_{n}$ where ${\bf FI}_{n}$ is the category of all injective functions between subsets of an $n$-element set.
We explore the modular representation theory of affine and cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. We provide an equivalence between the category of finite dimensional representations of the affine (resp. cyclotomic) Yokonuma-Hecke algebra and that of an algebra which is a direct sum of tensor products of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$ (resp. Ariki-Koike algebras). As one of the applications, the irreducible representations of affine and cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras are classified over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. Secondly, the modular branching rules for these alg…
We prove a conjecture of Kashiwara and Miemietz on canonical bases and branching rules of affine Hecke algebras of type D. The proof is similar to the proof of the type B case.
We prove a series of conjectures of Enomoto and Kashiwara on canonical bases and branching rules of affine Hecke algebras of type B. The main ingredient of the proof is a new graded Ext-algebra associated with quiver with involutions that we compute explicitly.
We derive a formula for the entries in the change-of-basis matrix between Young's seminormal and natural representations of the symmetric group. These entries are determined as sums over weighted paths in the weak Bruhat graph on standard tableaux, and we show that they can be computed recursively as the weighted sum of at most two previously-computed entries in the matrix. We generalize our results to work for affine Hecke algebras, Ariki-Koike algebras, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and complex reflection groups given by the wreath product of a finite cyclic group with the symmetric group.
Ariki's and Grojnowski's approach to the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$ is applied to type $B$ with unequal parameters to obtain -- under certain restrictions on the eigenvalues of the lattice operators -- analogous multiplicity-one results and a classification of irreducibles with partial branching rules as in type $A$.
This is an expository article. We survey some fundamental trends in representation theory of symmetric groups and related objects which became apparent in the last fifteen years. The emphasis is on connections with Lie theory via categorification. We present results on branching rules and crystal graphs, decomposition numbers and canonical bases, graded representation theory, connections with cyclotomic and affine Hecke algebras, Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras, category ${\mathcal O}$, $W$-algebras, ...
We give a new representation-theoretic proof of the branching rule for Macdonald polynomials using the Etingof-Kirillov Jr. expression for Macdonald polynomials as traces of intertwiners of U_q(gl_n). In the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, we show that diagonal matrix elements of such intertwiners are given by application of Macdonald's operators to a simple kernel. An essential ingredient in the proof is a map between spherical parts of double affine Hecke algebras of different ranks based upon the Dunkl-Kasatani conjecture.
We begin by deriving an action of the 0-Hecke algebra on standard reverse composition tableaux and use it to discover 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the natural refinements of Schur functions known as quasisymmetric Schur functions. Furthermore, we classify combinatorially which of these 0-Hecke modules are indecomposable. From here, we establish that the natural equivalence relation arising from our 0-Hecke action has equivalence classes that are isomorphic to subintervals of the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Focussing on the equivalence classes containin…
P. Deligne defined interpolations of the tensor category of representations of the symmetric group S_n to complex values of n. Namely, he defined tensor categories Rep(S_t) for any complex t. This construction was generalized by F. Knop to the case of wreath products of S_n with a finite group. Generalizing these results, we propose a method of interpolating representations categories of various algebras containing S_n (such as degenerate affine Hecke algebras, symplectic reflection algebras, rational Cherednik algebras, etc.) to complex values of n. We also define the group algebra of S_n for…
This chapter is based on a series of lectures that I gave at the National University of Singapore in April 2013. The notes survey the representation theory of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type A with an emphasis on understanding the KLR grading and the connections between the "classical" ungraded representation theory and the rapidly emerging graded theory. They are fairly self-contained and they try to give a leisurely introduction to these algebras, with many examples and calculations that don't appear elsewhere. We make extensive use of the interactions between the ungraded and graded r…
The new approach to the theory of complex representrations of the finite symmetric groups which based on the notions of Coxeter generators., Gelfand-Zetlin algebras, Hecke algebra, Young-Jucys-Murphi generators and which hardly used inductive structure - is systematically developed. The appearence of Young diagrams, tables is naturally explained - the set of content vectors of all Young tables is the spectra of Gel'fand-Zetlin algebra. The first steps of the theory (the list of the irrediucible representatinos, branching rule, Young orthopgonal form, Murnagan-Nakayama rule etc.)are established…
Let ${\mathcal H}_{q}(d)$ be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for the symmetric group, where $q$ is a primitive $l$th root of unity. In this paper we develop a theory of support varieties which detects natural homological properties such as the complexity of modules. The theory the authors develop has a canonical description in an affine space where computations are tractable. The ideas involve the interplay with the computation of the cohomology ring due to Benson, Erdmann and Mikaelian, the theory of vertices due to Dipper and Du, and branching results for cohomology by Hemmer and Nakano. Calculati…
We construct a subalgebra of the Hecke algebra of type A. This is a generalization of the group algebra of the alternating groups. All the equivalent classes of irreducible representations of the subalgebra and the q-analogue of the branching rule between symmetric groups and alternating groups is obtained.
In the recent papers with Masaki Kashiwara, the author introduced the notion of symmetric crystals and presented the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon-Ariki type conjectures for the affine Hecke algebras of type $B$. Namely, we conjectured that certain composition multiplicities and branching rules for the affine Hecke algebras of type $B$ are described by using the lower global basis of symmetric crystals of $V_θ(λ)$. In this paper, we prove the existence of crystal bases and global bases of $V_θ(0)$ for any symmetric quantized Kac-Moody algebra by using a geometry of quivers (with a Dynkin diagram invo…
This article gives a proof of the Langlands-Shelstad fundamental lemma for the spherical Hecke algebra for every unramified p-adic reductive group G in large positive characteristic. The proof is based on the transfer principle for constructible motivic integration. To carry this out, we introduce a general family of partition functions attached to the complex L-group of the unramified p-adic group G. Our partition functions specialize to Kostant's q-partition function for complex connected groups and also specialize to the Langlands L-function of a spherical representation. These partition fu…
An enhanced algebraic group $\uG$ of $G=\GL(V)$ over $\bbc$ is a product variety $\GL(V)\times V$, endowed with an enhanced cross product. Associated with a natural tensor representation of $\uG$, there are naturally Levi and parabolic Schur algebras $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{P}$ respectively. We precisely investigate their structures, and study the dualities on the enhanced tensor representations for variant groups and algebras. In this course, an algebraic model of so-called degenerate double Hecke algebras (DDHA) is produced, and becomes a powerful implement. The connection between $\math…
Given a quiver, a fixed dimension vector, and a positive integer n, we construct a functor from the category of D-modules on the space of representations of the quiver to the category of modules over a corresponding Gan-Ginzburg algebra of rank n. When the quiver is affine Dynkin we obtain an explicit construction of representations of the corresponding wreath-product symplectic reflection algebra of rank n. When the quiver is star-shaped, but not finite Dynkin, we use this functor to obtain a Lie theoretic construction of representations of a "spherical" subalgebra of the Gan-Ginzburg algebra…
We review some recent advances in modular representation theory of symmetric groups and related Hecke algebras. We discuss connections with Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras and gradings on the blocks of the group algebras $FΣ_n$, which these connections reveal; graded categorification and connections with quantum groups and crystal bases; modular branching rules and the Mullineaux map; graded cellular structure and graded Specht modules; cuspidal systems for affine KLR algebras and imaginary Schur-Weyl duality, which connects representation theory of these algebras to the usual Schur algebras …
In this paper we will derive an explicit description of the genuine projective representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ using Dirac cohomology and the branching graph for the irreducible genuine projective representations of $S_n$. In 2015 Ciubotaru and He, using the extended Dirac index, showed that the characters of the projective representations of $S_n$ are related to the characters of elliptic graded modules. We derived the branching graph using Dirac theory and combinatorics relating to the cohomology of Borel varieties $\mathcal{B}_e$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ and were able to use Dirac coh…
We define a commuting family of operators $T_0,T_1,...,T_n$ in the Temperley--Lieb algebra $\mathcal{A}_n(x)$ of type $A_{n-1}$. Using an appropriate analogue to Murphy basis of the Iwahori--Hecke algebra of the symmetric group, we describe the eigenvalues arising from the triangular action of the said operators on the cell modules of $\mathcal{A}_n(x)$. These results are used to provide the Temperley--Lieb algebras of type $A_{n-1}$ with a semi--normal form, together with a branching law, and explicit formulae for associated Gram determinants.
There are two approaches to projective representation theory of symmetric and alternating groups, which are powerful enough to work for modular representations. One is based on Sergeev duality, which connects projective representation theory of the symmetric group and representation theory of the algebraic supergroup $Q(n)$ via appropriate Schur (super)algebras and Schur functors. The second approach follows the work of Grojnowski for classical affine and cyclotomic Hecke algebras and connects projective representation theory of symmetric groups in characteristic $p$ to the crystal graph of th…
Let n be a positive integer and let p be a prime. Suppose that we take a partition of n, and obtain another partition by moving a node from one row to a shorther row. Carter and Payne showed that if the p-residue of the removed and added positions is the same, then there is a non-zero homomorphism between the corresponding Specht modules for the symmetric group of degree n, defined over a field of characteristic p. In this paper we give a very simple description of such a homomorphism, as a map between polytabloids, using the action of a Murphy-Jucys element. We also present a proof that in th…
We develop a theory of levels for irreducible representations of symmetric groups of degree $n$ analogous to the theory of levels for finite classical groups. A key property of level is that the level of a character, provided it is not too big compared to $n$, gives a good lower bound on its degree, and, moreover, every character of low degree is either itself of low level or becomes so after tensoring with the sign character. Furthermore, if $l_1$ and $l_2$ satisfy a linear upper bound in $n$, then the maximal level of composition factors of the tensor product of representations of levels $l_…
