We derive a formula for the entries in the change-of-basis matrix between Young's seminormal and natural representations of the symmetric group. These entries are determined as sums over weighted paths in the weak Bruhat graph on standard tableaux, and we show that they can be computed recursively as the weighted sum of at most two previously-computed entries in the matrix. We generalize our results to work for affine Hecke algebras, Ariki-Koike algebras, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and complex reflection groups given by the wreath product of a finite cyclic group with the symmetric group.
We study Young's seminormal basis vectors of the dual Specht modules of the symmetric group, indexed by a certain class of standard tableaux, and their denominators. These vectors include those whose denominators control the splitting of the canonical morphism $Δ(λ+μ) \to Δ(λ) \otimes Δ(μ)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, where $Δ(ν)$ is the Weyl module of the classical Schur algebra labelled by $ν$.
We study the seminormal basis ${f_t}$ for the Specht modules of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra ${\cal H}_n(q)$ of type $A_{n-1}$. We focus on the base change coefficients between the seminormal basis ${f_t}$ and Young's natural basis ${x_t}$ with emphasis on the denominators of these coefficients. In certain important cases we obtain simple formulas for these coefficients involving radial lengths. Even for general tableaux we obtain new formulas. On the way we prove a new result about summands of the restricted Specht module at root of unity.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, $Δ(λ)$ denote the Weyl module of $G$ of highest weight $λ$ and $ι_{λ,μ}:Δ(λ+μ)\to Δ(λ)\otimesΔ(μ)$ be the canonical $G$-morphism. We study the split condition for $ι_{λ,μ}$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, and apply this as an approach to compare the Jantzen filtrations of the Weyl modules $Δ(λ)$ and $Δ(λ+μ)$. In the case when $G$ is of type $A$, we show that the split condition is closely related to the product of certain Young symmetrizers and, under some mild conditions, is further character…
We realize the integral Specht modules for the symmetric group $S_n$ as induced modules from the subalgebra of the group algebra generated by the Jucys-Murphy elements. We deduce from this that the simple modules for $FS_n$ are generated by reductions modulo $p$ of the corresponding Jucys-Murphy idempotents.
We study the representation theory of the symmetric group $S_n$ in positive characteristic $p$. Using features of the LLT-algorithm we give a conjectural description of the projective cover $P(λ)$ of the simple module $D(λ)$ where $λ$ is a $p$-restricted partition such that all ladders of the corresponding ladder partition are of order less than $p$. Inspired by the recent theory of Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras we explain an algorithm that allows us to verify this conjectural description for $n \leq 15$, at least.
Using a new presentation for partition algebras (J. Algebraic Combin. 37(3):401-454, 2013), we derive explicit combinatorial formulae for the seminormal representations of the partition algebras. These results generalise to the partition algebras the classical formulae given by Young for the symmetric group.
The purpose of this paper is to describe a general procedure for computing analogues of Young's seminormal representations of the symmetric groups. The method is to generalize the Jucys-Murphy elements in the group algebras of the symmetric groups to arbitrary Weyl groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras. The combinatorics of these elements allows one to compute irreducible representations explicitly and often very easily. In this paper we do these computations for Weyl groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras of types $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_n$, $G_2$. Although these computations are in reach for types $F_4$, $E…
In this paper all of the classical constructions of A. Young are generalized to affine Hecke algebras of type A. It is proved that the calibrated irreducible representations of the affine Hecke algebra are indexed by placed skew shapes and that these representations can be constructed explicitly with a generalization of Young's seminormal construction of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. The seminormal construction of an irreducible calibrated module does not produce a basis on which the affine Hecke algebra acts integrally but using it one is able to pick out a different…
In this note we give representations for the partition algebra A_3(Q) in Young's seminormal form. For this purpose, we also give characterizations of A_n(Q) and$A_{n-1/2}(Q).
We introduce and study some affine Hecke algebras of type ADE, generalising the affine Hecke algebras of GL. We construct irreducible calibrated representations and describe the calibrated spectrum. This is done in terms of new families of combinatorial objects equipped with actions of the corresponding Weyl groups. These objects are built from and generalise the usual standard Young tableaux, and are controlled by the considered affine Hecke algebras. By restriction and limiting procedure, we obtain several combinatorial models for representations of finite Hecke algebras and Weyl groups of t…
This paper introduces calibrated representations for affine Hecke algebras and classifies and constructs all finite dimensional irreducible calibrated representations. The primary technique is to provide indexing sets for controlling the weight space structure of finite dimensional modules for the affine Hecke algebra. Using these indexing sets we show that (1) irreducible calibrated representations are indexed by skew local regions, (2) the dimension of an irreducible calibrated representation is the number of chambers in the local region, (3) each irreducible calibrated representation is con…
The representation theory of the symmetric groups is intimately related to geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and Lie theory. The spin representation theory of the symmetric groups was originally developed by Schur. In these lecture notes, we present a coherent account of the spin counterparts of several classical constructions such as the Frobenius characteristic map, Schur duality, the coinvariant algebra, Kostka polynomials, and Young's seminormal form.
This paper introduces the notion of calibrated representations for affine Hecke algebras and classifies and constructs all finite dimensional irreducible calibrated representations. The main results are that (1) irreducible calibrated representations are indexed by placed skew shapes, (2) the dimension of an irreducible calibrated representation is the number of standard Young tableaux corresponding to the placed skew shape and (3) each irreducible calibrated representation is constructed explicitly by formulas which describe the action of each generator of the affine Hecke algebra on a specif…
The paper uses the cellular basis of the (semi-simple) degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebras to investigate these algebras exhaustively. As a consequence, we describe explicitly the "Young's seminormal form" and a orthogonal bases for Specht modules and determine explicitly the closed formula for the natural bilinear form on Specht modules and Schur elements for the degenerate cyclotomic Hekce algebras.
Let $U$ be a matrix chosen randomly, with respect to Haar measure, from the unitary group $U(d).$ We express the moments of the trace of any submatrix of $U$ as a sum over partitions whose terms count certain standard and semistandard Young tableaux. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we obtain a simple closed form for the moments of an individual entry of a random unitary matrix and use this to deduce that the entries converge in moments to standard complex Gaussian random variables. In addition, we recover a well-known theorem of E. Rains which shows that the moments of the trace of a …
Iwahori-Hecke algebras for the infinite series of complex reflection groups $G(r,p,n)$ were constructed recently in the work of Ariki and Koike, Broué and Malle, and Ariki. In this paper we give Murnaghan-Nakayama type formulas for computing the irreducible characters of these algebras. Our method is a generalization of that in our earlier paper in which we derived Murnaghan-Nakayama rules for the characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of the classical Weyl groups. In both papers we have been motivated by C. Greene, who gave a new derivation of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for irreducible …
Young diagrams are ubiquitous in combinatorics and representation theory. Here we explain these diagrams, focusing on how they are used to classify representations of the symmetric groups $S_n$ and various "classical groups": famous groups of matrices such as the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ consisting of all invertible $n \times n$ complex matrices, the special linear group $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ consisting of all $n \times n$ complex matrices with determinant 1, the group $\mathrm{U}(n)$ consisting of all unitary $n \times n$ matrices, and the special unitary group $…
The notion of an Abstract Young (briefly: AY) representation is a natural generalization of the classical Young orthogonal form. The AY representations of the symmetric group are characterized by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in [U2]. In this paper we present several types of minimal AY representation of $D_n$ associated with standard D-Young tableaux which are a natural generalization of usual standard Young tableaux. We give an explicit combinatorial view (the representation space is spanned by certain standard tableaux while the action is a generalized Young orthogonal form) of representations …
We show that the signed $p$-Kostka numbers depend just on $p$-Kostka numbers and the multiplicities of projective indecomposable modules in certain signed Young permutation modules. We then examine the signed $p$-Kostka number $k_{(α|β),(λ|pμ)}$ in the case when $|β|=p|μ|$. This allows us to explicitly describe the multiplicities of direct summands of a signed Young permutation module lying in the principal block of $F\mathfrak{S}_{mp}$ in terms of the $p$-Kostka numbers.
We calculate all inequivalent irreducible representations of $§_4$ by specifying the matrices for adjacent transpositions and indicating how to obtain general permutations in $§_4$ from these transpositions. We employ standard Young tableaux methods as found in Sagan's \emph{The Symmetric Group: Representations, Combinatorial Algorithms, and Symmetric Functions} (2001).
We study the representation theory of the rook-Brauer algebra RB_k(x), also called the partial Brauer algebra. This algebra has a basis of "rook-Brauer" diagrams, which are Brauer diagrams that allow for the possibility of missing edges. The Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras are all subalgebras of the rook-Brauer algebra. We prove that RB_k(n) is the centralizer algebra of the complex orthogonal group O(n) acting on the k-fold tensor power of the sum of its 1-dimensional trivial module and its n-dimensional defining module, and thus the rook-Brauer alge…
The convolution of indicators of two conjugacy classes on the symmetric group S_q is usually a complicated linear combination of indicators of many conjugacy classes. Similarly, a product of the moments of the Jucys--Murphy element involves many conjugacy classes with complicated coefficients. In this article we consider a combinatorial setup which allows us to manipulate such products easily and we show that it very closely related to the combinatorial approach to random matrices. Our formulas are exact (in a sense that they hold not only asymptotically for large q). This result has many inte…
Asymptotic representation theory of general linear groups GL(n,q) over a finite field leads to studying probability measures ρon the group U of all infinite uni-uppertriangular matrices over F_q, with the condition that ρis invariant under conjugations by arbitrary infinite matrices. Such probability measures form an infinite-dimensional simplex, and the description of its extreme points (in other words, ergodic measures ρ) was conjectured by Kerov in connection with nonnegative specializations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Vershik and Kerov also conjectured the following Law of Larg…
Schur-Weyl duality is a fundamental framework in combinatorial representation theory. It intimately relates the irreducible representations of a group to the irreducible representations of its centralizer algebra. We investigate the analog of Schur-Weyl duality for the group of unipotent upper triangular matrices over a finite field. In this case, the character theory of these upper triangular matrices is "wild" or unattainable. Thus we employ a generalization, known as supercharacter theory, that creates a striking variation on the character theory of the symmetric group with combinatorics bu…
Denote by $N \subset SL_k$ the subgroup of unipotent upper triangular matrices. In this paper, we show that the dual canonical basis of $\mathbb{C}[N]$ (and base affine spaces) can be parameterized by semi-standard Young tableaux. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for every element in the the dual canonical basis using the data of the corresponding semistandard Young tableau. We apply our results to study cluster variables in $\mathbb{C}[N]$.
Let n_n(C) be the algebra of strictly upper-triangular n x n matrices over the field of complex numbers and X_2 the subset of matrices of nilpotent order 2. Let B_n(C) be the group of invertible upper-triangular matrices acting on n_n(C) by conjugation. Let B(u) be the orbit of u in X_2 with respect to this action. Let S_n^2 be the subset of involutions in the symmetric group S_n. We define a new partial order on S_n^2 which gives the combinatorial description of the closure of B(u). We also construct an ideal I(B(u)) in symmetric algebra S(n_n(C)^* whose variety V(I(B(u))) equals the closure …
We consider the asymptotic behavior as $n\to\infty$ of the spectra of random matrices of the form \[\frac{1}{\sqrt{n-1}}\sum_{k=1}^{n-1}Z_{nk}ρ_n ((k,k+1)),\] where for each $n$ the random variables $Z_{nk}$ are i.i.d. standard Gaussian and the matrices $ρ_n((k,k+1))$ are obtained by applying an irreducible unitary representation $ρ_n$ of the symmetric group on $\{1,2,...,n\}$ to the transposition $(k,k+1)$ that interchanges $k$ and $k+1$ [thus, $ρ_n((k,k+1))$ is both unitary and self-adjoint, with all eigenvalues either +1 or -1]. Irreducible representations of the symmetric group on $\{1,2,.…
The conjugation action of the complex orthogonal group on the polynomial functions on $n \times n$ matrices gives rise to a graded algebra of invariant polynomials. A spanning set of this algebra is in bijective correspondence to a set of unlabeled, cyclic graphs with directed edges equivalent under dihedral symmetries. When the degree of the invariants is $n+1$, we show that the dimension of the space of relations between the invariants grows linearly in $n$. Furthermore, we present two methods to obtain a basis of the space of relations. First, we construct a basis using an idempotent of the…
One of spectacular results in mathematical physics is the expression of Racah matrices for symmetric representations of the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ through the Askey-Wilson polynomials, associated with the $q$-hypergeometric functions ${_4ϕ_3}$. Recently it was shown that this is in fact the general property of symmetric representations, valid for arbitrary $SU_q(N)$, at least for exclusive Racah matrices $\bar S$. The natural question then is what substitutes the conventional $q$-hypergeometric polynomials when representations are more general? New advances in the theory of matrices $\bar S$,…
We consider the asymptotics of the Plancherel measures on partitions of $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that the local structure of a Plancherel typical partition (which we identify with a Young diagram) in the middle of the limit shape converges to a determinantal point process with the discrete sine kernel. On the edges of the limit shape, we prove that the joint distribution of suitably scaled 1st, 2nd, and so on rows of a Plancherel typical diagram converges to the corresponding distribution for eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices (given by the Airy kernel). This proves a conjec…
Irreducible representations (irreps) of a finite group $G$ are equivalent if there exists a similarity transformation between them. In this paper, we describe an explicit algorithm for constructing this transformation between a pair of equivalent irreps, assuming we are given an algorithm to compute the matrix elements of these irreps. Along the way, we derive a generalization of the classical orthogonality relations for matrix elements of irreps of finite groups. We give an explicit form of such unitary matrices for the important case of conjugated Young-Yamanouchi representations, when our g…
