This paper has been withdrawn by the author because preprints math.CO/0301299 and math.CO/0304275 were superceded by the paper math.CO/0411647 (Piotr Sniady, "Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups, genus expansion and free probability". The convolution of indicators of two conjugacy classes on the symmetric group S_q is usually a complicated linear combination of indicators of many conjugacy classes. Similarly, a product of the moments of the Jucys--Murphy element involves many conjugacy classes with complicated coefficients. In this article we consider a combinatorial setup which allows us to manipulate such products easily and we show that it very closely related to the combinatorial approach to random matrices. Our formulas are exact (in a sense that they hold not only asymptotically for large q). This result has many interesting applications, for example it allows to find precise asymptotics of characters of large symmetric groups and asymptotics of the Plancherel measure on Young diagrams.
In this paper, we show that, for skew-symmetric cluster algebras, the c-vectors of any seed with respect to an acyclic initial seed define a quasi-Cartan companion of the corresponding exchange matrix. As an application, we show that any cluster tilted quiver has an admissible cut of edges.
We present a new proof of the well known formula for the rank of the inclusion matrix by constructing a $k\mathcal{S}_n$-module spanned by the columns of this matrix and calculating its dimension.
We investigate convex polytopes of doubly stochastic matrices having special structures: symmetric, Hankel symmetric, centrosymmetric, and both symmetric and Hankel symmetric. We determine dimensions of these polytopes and classify their extreme points. We also determine a basis of the real vector spaces generated by permutation matrices with these special structures.
We show that the existence of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices having largest possible determinant is equivalent to the existence of certain tournament matrices. In particular, we prove a recent conjecture of Armario. We also show that large submatrices of conference matrices are determined by their spectrum.
\textit{Propus} (which means twins) is a construction method for orthogonal $\pm 1$ matrices based on a variation of the Williamson array called the \textit{propus array} \[ \begin{matrix*}[r] A& B & B & D B& D & -A &-B B& -A & -D & B D& -B & B &-A. \end{matrix*} \] This construction designed to find symmetric Hadamard matrices was originally based on circulant symmetric $\pm 1$ matrices, called \textit{propus matrices}. We also give another construction based on symmetric Williamson-type matrices. We give constructions to find symmetric propus-Hadamard matrices for 57 orders $4n$, $n < 200$ o…
We present the poset of Borel congruence classes of anti-symmetric matrices ordered by containment of closures. We show that there exists a bijection between the set of these classes and the set of involutions of the symmetric group. We give two formulas for the rank function of this poset.
We prove that symmetry group of the pfaffian polynomial of a symmetric matrix is a dihedral group. We calculate pfaffians of symmetric matrices with components $(x_i-x_j)^2$ and $\cos(x_i-x_j)$ for $i<j.$
We define Bush-type generalized Hadamard matrices over abelian groups and construct symmetric Bush-type generalized Hadamard matrices over the additive group of finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q$ a prime power. We then show and study an association scheme obtained from such generalized Hadamard matrices.
We systematically explore the new method of construction (known as the propus construction) of symmetric Hadamard matrices for small orders, $4v$. In particular we give the first examples of symmetric Hadamard matrices of order $156=4\cdot 39$. The smallest $v$ for which symmetric Hadamard matrices of order $4v$ are not known is now $v=47$.
The asymptotic volume of the polytope of symmetric stochastic matrices can be determined by asymptotic enumeration techniques as in the case of the Birkhoff polytope. These methods can be extended to polytopes of symmetric stochastic matrices with given diagonal, if this diagonal varies not too wildly. To this end, the asymptotic number of symmetric matrices with natural entries, zero diagonal and varying row sums is determined and a third order correction factor to this is examined.
A {\it symmetric companion matrix} is a matrix of the form $A +A^T$ where $A$ is a companion matrix all of whose entries are in $\{0,1\}$ and $A^T$ is the transpose of $A.$ In this paper, we find the total number of primitive and the total number of imprimitive symmetric companion matrices. We establish formulas to compute the exponent of every primitive symmetric companion matrix. Hence the exponent set for the class of primitive symmetric companion matrices is completely characterized. We also obtain the number of primitive symmetric companion matrices with a given exponent for certain cases…
We examine a result of Basor and Ehrhardt concerning Hankel and Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices, within the context of the Riordan group of lower-triangular matrices. This allows us to determine the LDU decomposition of certain symmetric Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices. We also determine the generating functions and Hankel transforms of associated sequences.
We introduce a new class of structured symmetric matrices by extending the notion of perfect elimination ordering from graphs to weighted graphs or matrices. This offers a common framework capturing common vertex elimination orderings of monotone families of chordal graphs, Robinsonian matrices and ultrametrics. We give a structural characterization for matrices that admit perfect elimination orderings in terms of forbidden substructures generalizing chordless cycles in graphs.
We introduce and study three different notions of tropical rank for symmetric and dissimilarity matrices in terms of minimal decompositions into rank 1 symmetric matrices, star tree matrices, and tree matrices. Our results provide a close study of the tropical secant sets of certain nice tropical varieties, including the tropical Grassmannian. In particular, we determine the dimension of each secant set, the convex hull of the variety, and in most cases, the smallest secant set which is equal to the convex hull.
In a previous paper we completely described cyclotomic matrices--integer symmetric matrices of spectral radius at most 2. In this paper we find all minimal noncyclotomic matrices. As a consequence, we are able to determine all integer symmetric matrices of spectral radius at most 2.019, and to determine all integer symmetric matrices whose Mahler measure is at most 1.3. In particular we solve the strong version of Lehmer's problem for integer symmetric matrices: all noncyclotomic matrices have Mahler measure at least "Lehmer's number" 1.17628... .
We present some graphical characterizations of positive definite symmetric quasi-Cartan matrices of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}_{n}$ and $\mathbb{D}_{n}$. Our proofs are constructive, purely graph theoretical, and almost self-contained in the sense that they rely on the classical inflations method only.
We continue our systematic search for symmetric Hadamard matrices based on the so called propus construction. In a previous paper this search covered the orders $4v$ with odd $v\le41$. In this paper we cover the cases $v=43,45,47,49,51$. The odd integers $v<120$ for which no symmetric Hadamard matrices of order $4v$ are known are the following: $$47,59,65,67,73,81,89,93,101,103,107,109,113,119.$$ By using the propus construction, we found several symmetric Hadamard matrices of order $4v$ for $v=47,73,113$.
Brualdi and Ma found a connection between involutions of length $n$ with $k$ descents and symmetric $k\times k$ matrices with non-negative integer entries summing to $n$ and having no row or column of zeros. From their main theorem they derived two alternating sums by algebraic means and asked for combinatorial proofs. In this note we provide such demonstrations making use of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence between symmetric matrices and semi-standard Young Tableau. Additionally, we restate the proof of Brualdi and Ma's main result with this perspective which shortens the argument.
We investigate the number of symmetric matrices of non-negative integers with zero diagonal such that each row sum is the same. Equivalently, these are zero diagonal symmetric contingency tables with uniform margins, or loop-free regular multigraphs. We determine the asymptotic value of this number as the size of the matrix tends to infinity, provided the row sum is large enough. We conjecture that our answer is valid for all row sums.
We prove that every infinite sequence of skew-symmetric or symmetric matrices M_1, M_2, ... over a fixed finite field must have a pair M_i, M_j (i<j) such that M_i is isomorphic to a principal submatrix of the Schur complement of a nonsingular principal submatrix in M_j, if those matrices have bounded rank-width. This generalizes three theorems on well-quasi-ordering of graphs or matroids admitting good tree-like decompositions; (1) Robertson and Seymour's theorem for graphs of bounded tree-width, (2) Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle's theorem for matroids representable over a fixed finite field h…
We study the Schur polynomial expansion of a family of symmetric polynomials related to the refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to their inversion number, complementary inversion number and the position of the unique $1$ in the top row. We prove that the expansion can be expressed as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions and we are also able to determine the coefficients. This establishes a new connection between alternating sign matrices and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with totall…
A conference matrix of order $n$ is an $n\times n$ matrix $C$ with diagonal entries $0$ and off-diagonal entries $\pm 1$ satisfying $CC^\top=(n-1)I$. If $C$ is symmetric, then $C$ has a symmetric spectrum $Σ$ (that is, $Σ=-Σ$) and eigenvalues $\pm\sqrt{n-1}$. We show that many principal submatrices of $C$ also have symmetric spectrum, which leads to examples of Seidel matrices of graphs (or, equivalently, adjacency matrices of complete signed graphs) with a symmetric spectrum. In addition, we show that some Seidel matrices with symmetric spectrum can be characterized by this construction.
We provide a decomposition that is sufficient in showing when a symmetric tridiagonal matrix $A$ is completely positive. Our decomposition can be applied to a wide range of matrices. We give alternate proofs for a number of related results found in the literature in a simple, straightforward manner. We show that the cp-rank of any irreducible tridiagonal doubly stochastic matrix is equal to its rank. We then consider symmetric pentadiagonal matrices, proving some analogous results, and providing two different decompositions sufficient for complete positivity. We illustrate our constructions wi…
Our motivation comes from the work of Engel and Schneider (1980). Their main theorem implies that two symmetric matrices have equal corresponding principal minors of all orders if and only if they are diagonally similar. This study was continued by Hartfiel and Loewy (1984). They found sufficient conditions under which two $n\times n$ matrices\ $A$ and $B$ have equal corresponding principal minors of all orders if and only if $B$ or its transpose $B^{t}$ is diagonally similar to $A$. In this paper, we give a new way to construct a pair of skew-symmetric having equal corresponding principal min…
In this paper we give a simple, short, and self-contained proof for a non-trivial upper bound on the probability that a random $\pm 1$ symmetric matrix is singular.
Previously, self-dual codes have been constructed from weighing matrices, and in particular from conference matrices (skew and symmetric). In this paper, codes constructed from matrices of skew symmetric type whose determinants reach the Ehlich-Wojtas' bound are presented. A necessary and sufficient condition for these codes to be self-dual is given, and examples are provided for lengths up to 52.
In this paper, we study structural properties of finite mutation type quivers. In particular, we obtain a characterization of finite mutation type quivers that are associated with triangulations of surfaces and give a new numerical invariant for their mutation classes.
In Ehrhart theory, the $h^*$-vector of a rational polytope often provide insights into properties of the polytope that may be otherwise obscured. As an example, the Birkhoff polytope, also known as the polytope of real doubly-stochastic matrices, has a unimodal $h^*$-vector, but when even small modifications are made to the polytope, the same property can be very difficult to prove. In this paper, we examine the $h^*$-vectors of a class of polytopes containing real doubly-stochastic symmetric matrices.
We completely describe all integer symmetric matrices that have all their eigenvalues in the interval [-2,2]. Along the way we classify all signed graphs, and then all charged signed graphs, having all their eigenvalues in this same interval. We then classify subsets of the above for which the integer symmetric matrices, signed graphs and charged signed graphs have all their eigenvalues in the open interval (-2,2).
A symmetric doubly stochastic matrix A is said to be determined by its spectra if the only symmetric doubly stochastic matrices that are similar to A are of the form $P^TAP$ for some permutation matrix P. The problem of characterizing such matrices is considered here. An almost the same but a more difficult problem was proposed by [ M. Fang, A note on the inverse eigenvalue problem for symmetric doubly stochastic matrices, Lin. Alg. Appl., 432 (2010) 2925-2927] as follows: Characterize all n-tuples $λ= (1,λ_2,...,λ_n)$ such that up to a permutation similarity, there exists a unique symmetric d…
We study the equivalence between bipartiteness and symmetry of spectra of mixed graphs, for $θ$-Hermitian adjacency matrices defined by an angle $θ\in (0, π]$. We show that this equivalence holds when, for example, an angle $θ$ is an algebraic number, while it breaks down for any angle $θ\in \mathbb{Q}π$. Furthermore, we construct a family of non-bipartite mixed graphs having the symmetric spectra for given $θ\in \mathbb{Q}π$.
For a graph G, M(G) denotes the maximum multiplicity occurring of an eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix whose zero-nonzero pattern is given by edges of G. We introduce two combinatorial graph parameters T^-(G) and T^+(G) that give a lower and an upper bound for M(G) respectively, and we show that these bounds are sharp.
We construct new symmetric Hadamard matrices of orders $92,116$, and $172$. While the existence of those of order $92$ was known since 1978, the orders $116$ and $172$ are new. Our construction is based on a recent new combinatorial array discovered by N. A. Balonin and J. Seberry. For order $116$ we used an adaptation of an algorithm for parallel collision search. The adaptation pertains to the modification of some aspects of the algorithm to make it suitable to solve a 3-way matching problem. We also point out that a new infinite series of symmetric Hadamard matrices arises by plugging into …
We prove the equality of doubly refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices and of Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions using integral formulae originating from certain solutions of the quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation.
We show, using a hybrid analysis/linear algebra argument, that the diagonal vector of an infinite symmetric matrix over ${\mathbb Z}_2$ is contained in the range of the matrix. We apply this result to an extension, to the countable infinite case, of the Lights Out problem.
We prove refined enumeration results on several symmetry classes as well as related classes of alternating sign matrices with respect to classical boundary statistics, using the six-vertex model of statistical physics. More precisely, we study vertically symmetric, vertically and horizontally symmetric, vertically and horizontally perverse, off-diagonally and off-antidiagonally symmetric, vertically and off-diagonally symmetric, quarter turn symmetric as well as quasi quarter turn symmetric alternating sign matrices. Our results prove conjectures of Fischer, Duchon and Robbins.
The main result of the note describes certain optimal-score partitions, which can be interpreted as optimal resource allocations. This result is based on the fact that any nonnegative square matrix whose column sums are the same as the corresponding row sums can be represented as the sum of circuit matrices.
It was shown by Kuperberg that the partition function of the square-ice model related to half-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices of even order is the product of two similar factors. We propose a square-ice model whose states are in bijection with half-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices of odd order. The partition function of the model is expressed via the above mentioned factors. The contributions to the partition function of the states corresponding to the alternating-sign matrices having 1 or -1 as the central entry are found and the related enumerations are obtained.
Let $M_n$ be drawn uniformly from all $\pm 1$ symmetric $n \times n$ matrices. We show that the probability that $M_n$ is singular is at most $\exp(-c(n\log n)^{1/2})$, which represents a natural barrier in recent approaches to this problem. In addition to improving on the best-known previous bound of Campos, Mattos, Morris and Morrison of $\exp(-c n^{1/2})$ on the singularity probability, our method is different and considerably simpler.
A function $f$ from $\mathbb{Z}$ to the symmetric matrices over an arbitrary field $K$ of characteristic $0$ is a $1$-quasihomomorphism if the matrix $f(x+y) - f(x) - f(y)$ has rank at most $1$ for all $x,y \in \mathbb{Z}$. We show that any such $1$-quasihomomorphism has distance at most $2$ from an actual group homomorphism. This gives a positive answer to a special case of a problem posed by Kazhdan and Ziegler.
Kenyon and Pemantle (2014) gave a formula for the entries of a square matrix in terms of connected principal and almost-principal minors. Each entry is an explicit Laurent polynomial whose terms are the weights of domino tilings of a half Aztec diamond. They conjectured an analogue of this parametrization for symmetric matrices, where the Laurent monomials are indexed by Catalan paths. In this paper we prove the Kenyon-Pemantle conjecture, and apply this to a statistics problem pioneered by Joe (2006). Correlation matrices are represented by an explicit bijection from the cube to the elliptope…
The spectra of signed matrices have played a fundamental role in social sciences, graph theory, and control theory. In this work, we investigate the computational problems of identifying symmetric signings of matrices with natural spectral properties. Our results are twofold: 1. We show NP-completeness for the following three problems: verifying whether a given matrix has a symmetric signing that is positive semi-definite/singular/has bounded eigenvalues. However, we also illustrate that the complexity could substantially differ for input matrices that are adjacency matrices of graphs. 2. We e…
