The irreducible decomposition of a unitary representation often contains continuous spectrum when restricted to a non-compact subgroup. The author singles out a nice class of branching problems where each irreducible summand occurs discretely with finite multiplicity (admissible restrictions). Basic theory and new perspectives of admissible restrictions are presented from both analytic and algebraic view points. We also discuss some applications of admissible restrictions to modular varieties and $L^p$-harmonic analysis.
The unitary principal series representations of $G=GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ induced from a character of the maximal parabolic subgroup $P=(GL(1,\mathbb{C})\times GL(n-1,\mathbb{C}))\ltimes\mathbb{C}^{n-1}$ attain the minimal Gelfand--Kirillov dimension among all infinite-dimensional unitary representations of $G$. We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of these representations to symmetric subgroups of $G$.
We show that the modular branching rule (in the sense of Harish-Chandra) on unipotent modules for finite unitary groups is piecewise described by particular connected components of the crystal graph of well-chosen Fock spaces, under favourable conditions. Besides, we give the combinatorial formula to pass from one to the other in the case of modules arising from cuspidal modules of defect 0. This partly proves a recent conjecture of Jacon and the authors.
We give a complete description of the discrete spectra in the branching law $Π|_{G'}$ with respect to the pair $(G,G')=(O(p,q), O(p',q') \times O(p'',q''))$ for irreducible unitary representations $Π$ of $G$ that are "geometric quantization" of minimal elliptic coadjoint orbits. We also construct explicitly all holographic operators and prove a closed Parseval-type formula.
Let $G=\operatorname{O}(1,n+1)$ with maximal compact subgroup $K$ and let $Π$ be a unitary irreducible representation of $G$ with non-trivial $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-cohomology. Then $Π$ occurs inside a principal series representation of $G$, induced from the $\operatorname{O}(n)$-representation $\bigwedge\nolimits^p(\mathbb{C}^n)$ and characters of a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$ at the limit of the complementary series. Considering the subgroup $G'=\operatorname{O}(1,n)$ of $G$ with maximal compact subgroup $K'$, we prove branching laws and explicit Plancherel formulas for the restrictions to…
In this paper we consider the restriction of a unitary irreducible representation of type $A_{\mathfrak q}(λ)$ of $GL(4,{\mathbb R})$ to reductive subgroups $H$ which are the fixpoint sets of an involution. We obtain a formula for the restriction to the symplectic group and to $GL(2,{\mathbb C})$, and as an application we construct in the last section some representations in the cuspidal spectrum of the symplectic and the complex general linear group. In addition to working directly with the cohmologically induced module to obtain the branching law, we also introduce the useful concept of pseu…
In this paper we consider the unitary symmetric spaces of the form X=U(p,q)/U(1)U(p,q-1) and their discrete series representations. Inspired by the work of A.Venkatesh and Y.Sekellarides on L-groups of p-adic spherical spaces we formulate and prove natural relative branching laws for the restriction to smaller subgroups of the same type and corresponding unitary spaces. We think of this as steps to formulation and proving Gan Gross Prasad conjectures for unitary spaces. Using period integral and some results of T.Kobayashi we prove an analogue of thesis conjectures.
This note presents a procedure to determine the reduction of the irreducible and the induced characters of the symmetric group in terms of the irreducible and induced characters of the hyperoctahedral group Key Words: Symmetric Group, Hyperoctahedral group, Representations, Characters, Re- duction.
In this paper, we obtain explicit branching laws for all irreducible unitary representations of $\Spin(N,1)$ restricted to a parabolic subgroup $P$. The restriction turns out to be a finite direct sum of irreducible unitary representations of $P$. We also verify Duflo's conjecture for the branching law of tempered representations of $\Spin(N,1)$ with respect to a parabolic subgroup $P$. That is to show: in the framework of the orbit method, the branching law of a tempered representation is determined by the behavior of the moment map from the corresponding coadjoint orbit. A few key tools used…
In the modular representation theory of finite unitary groups when the characteristic $\ell$ of the ground field is a unitary prime, the $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_e$-crystal on level $2$ Fock spaces graphically describes the Harish-Chandra branching of unipotent representations restricted to the tower of unitary groups. However, how to determine the cuspidal support of an arbitrary unipotent representation has remained an open question. We show that for $\ell$ sufficiently large, the $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty$-crystal on the same level $2$ Fock spaces provides the remaining piece of the puzzle for the …
In this paper we study the Gan-Gross-Prasad problem for unitary groups over finite fields. Our results provide complete answers for unipotent representations, and we obtain the explicit branching of these representations.
The restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a real reductive group $G$ to a reductive subgroup $H$ decomposes into a direct integral of irreducible unitary representations $τ$ of $H$ with multiplicities $m(π,τ)\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$. We show that on the smooth vectors of $π$, the direct integral is pointwise defined. This implies that $m(π,τ)$ is bounded above by the dimension of the space $\operatorname{Hom}_H(π^\infty|_H,τ^\infty)$ of intertwining operators between the smooth vectors, also called symmetry breaking operators, and provides a precise relation between t…
We consider branching laws for the restriction of some irreducible unitary representations $Π$ of $G=O(p,q)$ to its subgroup $H=O(p-1,q)$. In Kobayashi (arXiv:1907.07994), the irreducible subrepresentations of $O(p-1,q)$ in the restriction of the unitary $Π|_{O(p-1,q) }$ are determined. By considering the restriction of packets of irreducible representations we obtain another very simple branching law, which was conjectured in Orsted-Speh (arXiv:1907.07544).
The most degenerate unitary principal series representations π_{iλ,δ} (with λ \in R, δ\in Z/2Z) of G = GL(N,R) attain the minimum of the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension among all irreducible unitary representations of G. This article gives an explicit formula of the irreducible decomposition of the restriction π_{iλ,δ}|_H (branching law) with respect to all symmetric pairs (G,H). For N=2n with n \geq 2, the restriction π_{iλ,δ}|_H remains irreducible for H=Sp(n,R) if λ\neq0 and splits into two irreducible representations if λ=0. The branching law of the restriction π_{iλ,δ}|_H is purely discrete fo…
For a semisimple Lie group $G$ satisfying the equal rank condition, the most basic family of unitary irreducible representations is the discrete series found by Harish-Chandra. In this paper, we study some of the branching laws for discrete series when restricted to a subgroup $H$ of the same type by combining classical results with recent work of T. Kobayashi; in particular, we prove discrete decomposability under Harish-Chandra's condition of cusp form on the reproducing kernel. We show a relation between discrete decomposability and representing certain intertwining operators in terms of di…
This is a second paper in a series devoted to the minimal unitary representation of O(p,q). By explicit methods from conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, we find the branching law corresponding to restricting the minimal unitary representation to natural symmetric subgroups. In the case of purely discrete spectrum we obtain the full spectrum and give an explicit Parseval-Plancherel formula, and in the general case we construct an infinite discrete spectrum.
In this paper we consider the analytic continuation of the weighted Bergman spaces on the Lie ball $$\mathscr{D}=SO(2,n)/S(O(2) \times O(n))$$ and the corresponding holomorphic unitary (projective) representations of SO(2,n) on these spaces. These representations are known to be irreducible. Our aim is to decompose them under the subgroup SO(1,n) which acts as the isometry group of a totally real submanifold $\mathscr{X}$ of $\mathscr{D}$. We give a proof of a general decomposition theorem for certain unitary representations of semisimple Lie groups. In the particular case we are concerned wit…
We study branching problem of the metaplectic representation of $Sp(2, \mathbb R)$ under its principle subgroup $SL(2, \mathbb R)$. We find the complete decomposition.
Using Harish-Chandra induction and restriction, we construct a categorical action of a Kac-Moody algebra on the category of unipotent representations of finite unitary groups in non-defining characteristic. We show that the decategorified representation is naturally isomorphic to a direct sum of level 2 Fock spaces. From our construction we deduce that the Harish-Chandra branching graph coincide with the crystal graph of these Fock spaces, solving a recent conjecture of Gerber-Hiss-Jacon. We also obtain derived equivalences between blocks, yielding Broué's abelian defect groups conjecture for …
A unitary (Euclidean) representation of a quiver is given by assigning to each vertex a unitary (Euclidean) vector space and to each arrow a linear mapping of the corresponding vector spaces. We recall an algorithm for reducing the matrices of a unitary representation to canonical form, give a certain description of the representations in canonical form, and reduce the problem of classifying Euclidean representations to the problem of classifying unitary representations. We also describe the set of dimensions of all indecomposable unitary (Euclidean) representations of a quiver and establish t…
In this paper we study branching laws for certain unitary representations. This is done on the smooth vectors via a version of the {\it period integrals}, studied in number theory, and also closely connected to the {\it symmetry-breaking operators}, introduced by T.~Kobayashi. We exhibit non-vanishing symmetry breaking operators for the restriction of a representation $Π$ in the discrete spectrum for real hyperboloids to representations of smaller orthogonal groups. In the last part we discuss some conjectures for the restriction of representations in Arthur packets containing the representati…
In this paper we review and streamline some results of Kirillov, Olshanski and Pickrell on unitary representations of the unitary group $\U(\cH)$ of a real, complex or quaternionic separable Hilbert space and the subgroup $\U_\infty(\cH)$, consisting of those unitary operators $g$ for which $g - \1$ is compact. The Kirillov--Olshanski theorem on the continuous unitary representations of the identity component $\U_\infty(\cH)_0$ asserts that they are direct sums of irreducible ones which can be realized in finite tensor products of a suitable complex Hilbert space. This is proved and generalize…
In this paper branching rules for the fundamental representations of the symplectic groups in positive characteristic are found. The submodule structure of the restrictions of the fundamental modules for the group $Sp_{2n}(K)$ to the naturally embedded subgroup $Sp_{2n-2}(K)$ is determined. As a corollary, inductive systems of fundamental representations for $Sp_{\infty}(K)$ are classified. The submodule structure of the fundamental Weyl modules is refined.
We enumerate the number of complex irreducible representations of each degree of general unitary groups of degree 4 over principal ideal rings of length 2.
We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of minimal holomorphic representations to symmetric subgroups in the case where the restriction is discretely decomposable. For holomorphic pairs the minimal holomorphic representation decomposes into a direct sum of lowest weight representations which is made explicit. For non-holomorphic pairs the restriction is shown to be irreducible and identified with a known representation. We further study a conjecture by Kobayashi on the behaviour of associated varieties under restriction and confirm this conjecture in the setting of this paper.
The main result of this article is an application of the theory of invariant convex cones of Lie algebras to the study of unitary representations of Lie supergroups. It also includes an exposition of recent results of the second author on the classification of irreducible unitary representations of nilpotent Lie supergroups using the method of coadjoint orbits.
We consider the spherical complementary series of rank one Lie groups $H_n=\SO_0(n, 1; \mathbb F)$ for $\mathbb F=\mathbb R, \mathbb C, \mathbb H$. We prove that there exist finitely many discrete components in its restriction under the subgroup $H_{n-1}=\SO_0(n-1, 1; \mathbb F)$. This is proved by imbedding the complementary series into analytic continuation of holomorphic discrete series of $G_n=SU(n, 1)$, $SU(n, 1)\times SU(n, 1)$ and $SU(2n, 2)$ and by the branching of holomorphic representations under the corresponding subgroup $G_{n-1}$.
We lift the $5$-dimensional characteristic $3$ representation of $M_{11}$ to a complex representation of the amalgam ${\rm GL}(2,3)*_{D_8}S_{4}$, and consider its reduction (mod $p$) for other odd primes.
The restriction of a supercuspidal representation of SL_2(k), for k a local nonarchimedean field, to a maximal compact subgroup decomposes as a multiplicity-free direct sum of irreducible representations. We explicitly describe this decomposition in the case that the residual characteristic is odd, and determine how the spectrum of this decomposition varies as a function of the parameters describing the supercuspidal representation.
In this paper we study the branching law for the restriction from $SU(n,m)$ to $SO(n,m)$ of the minimal representation in the analytic continuation of the scalar holomorphic discrete series. We identify the the group decomposition with the spectral decomposition of the action of the Casimir operator on the subspace of $S(O(n) \times O(m))$-invariants. The Plancherel measure of the decomposition defines an $L^2$-space of functions, for which certain continuous dual Hahn polynomials furnish an orthonormal basis. It turns out that the measure has point masses precisely when $n-m>2$. Under these c…
We continue our work on understanding Howe correspondences by using theta representations from p-adic groups to compact groups. We prove some results for unitary theta representations of compact groups with respect to the induction and restriction functors.
This paper continues the study of the poset of eigenspaces of elements of a unitary reflection group (for a fixed eigenvalue), which was commenced in [6] and [5]. The emphasis in this paper is on the representation theory of unitary reflection groups. The main tool is the theory of poset extensions due to Segev and Webb ([16]). The new results place the well-known representations of unitary reflection groups on the top homology of the lattice of intersections of hyperplanes into a natural family, parameterised by eigenvalue.
Let $G$ be $Sp(2n, \mathbb{R})$ or $SO^*(2n)$. We compute the Dirac index of a large class of unitary representations considered by Vogan in Section 8 of [Vog84], which include all weakly fair $A_{\mathfrak{q}}(λ)$ modules and (weakly) unipotent representations of $G$ as two extreme cases. We conjecture that these representations exhaust all unitary representations of $G$ with nonzero Dirac cohomology. In general, for certain irreducible unitary module of an equal rank group, we clarify the link between the possible cancellations in its Dirac index, and the parities of its spin-lowest $K$-type…
We show that irreducible unitary representations of nilpotent super Lie groups can be obtained by induction from a distinguished class of sub super Lie groups. These sub super Lie groups are natural analogues of polarizing subgroups that appear in classical Kirillov theory. We obtain a concrete geometric parametrization of irreducible unitary representations by nonnegative definite coadjoint orbits. As an application, we prove an analytic generalization of the Stone-von Neumann theorem for Heisenberg-Clifford super Lie groups.
On restriction to the maximal compact subgroup $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$, an unramified principal series representation of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,F)$ decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional irreducibles each appearing with finite multiplicity. We describe a coarser decomposition into components which, although reducible in general, capture the equivalences between the irreducible constituents.
We continue the study of positive energy (lowest weight) unitary irreducible representations of the superalgebras osp(1|2n,R). We present the full list of these UIRs. We give the Proof of the case osp(1|8,R).
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, and $K$ a quadratic extension of $F$. Using Tadic's classification of the unitary dual of $GL(n,K)$, we give the list of irreducible unitary representations of this group distinguished by $GL(n,F)$, in terms of distinguished discrete series. As it is known that a generalised Steinberg representation $St(k,ρ)$ is distinguished if and only if the cuspidal representation $ρ$ is $η^{k-1}$-distinguished, for $η$ the character of $F^*$ with kernel the norms of $K^*$, this actually gives a classification of distinguished unitary representations in terms of distinguished c…
Is the topological group of all motions (including translations) of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$ isomorphic to a subgroup of the unitary group $U(H)$? This question was asked by Su Gao. We answer the question in the affirmative.
Let A be a finite dimensional central division algebra over a local non-archimedean field F. Fix any parabolic subgroup P of GL(n,A) and a Levi factor M of P. Let πbe an irreducible unitary representation of M and ϕ(not necessarily unitary) character of M. We give an explicit necessary and sufficient condition for the parabolically induced representation Ind(ϕπ) of GL(n,A) to be irreducible.
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space over a $p$-adic field $F$, the algebraic groups $G$ and $H$ being assumed semisimple of relative rank $1$. One of the branching problems for the Steinberg representation $\St_G$ of $G$ is the determination of the dimension of the intertwining space ${\rm Hom}_H (\St_G ,π)$, for any irreducible representation $π$ of $H$. In this work we do not compute this dimension, but show how it is related to the dimensions of some other intertwining spaces ${\rm Hom}_{K_i} ({\tilde π} ,1)$, for a certain finite family $K_i$, $i=1,...,r$, of anisotropic subgroups of …
I present several applications of the Dirac inequality to the determination of isolated unitary representations and associated "spectral gaps" in the case of unramified principal series. The method works particularly well in order to attach irreducible unitary representations to the large nilpotent orbits (e.g., regular, subregular) in the Langlands dual complex Lie algebra. The results could be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of Salamanca-Riba's classification of irreducible unitary $(\mathfrak g,K)$-modules with strongly regular infinitesimal character.
For any unitary representation of an arbitrary Lie group I construct a moment mapping from the space of smooth vectors of the representation into the dual of the Lie algebra. This moment mapping is equivariant and smooth. For the space of analytic vectors the same construction is possible and leads to a real analytic moment mapping.
We say a representation V of a group G has stability if its multiplicities m^{G}_{V}(λ) is dependent only on some equivalence class of λfor a sufficiently large parameter λ. In this paper, we prove that the restriction of a holomorphic discrete series representation with respect to any holomorphic symmetric pairs has stability. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on multiplicity-freeness of the branching laws in this setting. This condition is same as the sufficient condition given by the theory of visible actions. We prove a general theorem before we show the stabilit…
We study branching multiplicity spaces of complex classical groups in terms of GL(2) representations. In particular, we show how combinatorics of GL(2) representations are intertwined to make branching rules under the restriction of GL(n) to GL(n-2). We also discuss analogous results for the symplectic and orthogonal groups.
This paper classifies the equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations with nonvanishing Dirac cohomology for complex $E_6$. This is achieved by using our finiteness result, and by improving the computing method.
We give a non-negative combinatorial formula, in terms of Littlewood-Richardson numbers, for the homology of the unitary representations of the cyclotomic rational Cherednik algebra, and as a consequence, for the graded Betti numbers for the ideals of a class of subspace arrangements arising from the reflection arrangements of complex reflection groups.
We propose a natural quantized character theory for inductive systems of compact quantum groups based on KMS states on AF-algebras following Stratila-Voiculescu's work (Stratila-Voiculescu, 1975) (or (Enomoto-Izumi, 2016)), and give its serious investigation when the system consists of quantum unitary groups $U_q(N)$ with $q$ in $(0,1)$. The key features of this work are: The "quantized trace" of a unitary representation of a compact quantum group can be understood as a quantized character associated with the unitary representation and its normalized one is captured as a KMS state with respect…
We compare crystal combinatorics of the level $2$ Fock space with the classification of unitary representations of type $B$ rational Cherednik algebras to show that any finite-dimensional unitary irreducible representation of such an algebra is labeled by a bipartition consisting of a rectangular partition in one component and the empty partition in the other component. This is a new proof of a result that can be deduced from theorems of Montarani and Etingof-Stoica.
We find the irreducible decomposition of the Weil representation of the unitary group $\mathrm{U}_{2n}(A)$, where $A$ is a ramified quadratic extension of a finite, commutative, local, principal ideal ring $R$ and the nilpotency degree of the maximal ideal of $A$ is odd. We show in particular that this Weil representation is multiplicity free. Restriction to the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU}_{2n}(A)$ preserves irreducibility and multiplicity freeness provided $n>1$.
This is a review of [Michor, Peter W.: The moment mapping for a unitary representation, Ann. Global Anal. Geometry, 8, No 3(1990), 299--313] including a careful description of calculus in infinite dimensions.
Using Bruhat-Tits theory, we analyse the restriction of depth-zero representations of a semisimple simply connected $p$-adic group $G$ to a maximal compact subgroup $K$. We prove the coincidence of branching rules within classes of Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representations. Furthermore, we show that under obvious compatibility conditions, the restriction to $K$ of a Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representation of $G$ intertwines with the restriction of a depth-zero principal series representation in infinitely many distinct components of arbitrarily large depth. Several qualitative and qua…
