I present several applications of the Dirac inequality to the determination of isolated unitary representations and associated "spectral gaps" in the case of unramified principal series. The method works particularly well in order to attach irreducible unitary representations to the large nilpotent orbits (e.g., regular, subregular) in the Langlands dual complex Lie algebra. The results could be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of Salamanca-Riba's classification of irreducible unitary $(\mathfrak g,K)$-modules with strongly regular infinitesimal character.
Folloing the methods of Bushnell-Kutzko for general linear groups, we construct simple types attached to certain skew simple strata for a symplectic group and an unramified unitary group over a non-archimedean local field.
In this note, we introduce the notion of almost unramified representations of quasi-split unitary groups of even ranks with respect to an unramified quadratic extension of local fields, and study their behavior under the local theta correspondence. These representations are in some sense the least ramified representations that have root number $-1$.
In this paper, we establish the theory of local newforms for irreducible tempered generic representations of unramified odd unitary groups over a non-archimedean local field. For the proof, we prove an analogue of the fundamental lemma for our compact groups.
We construct all cuspidal l-modular representations of a unitary group in three variables attached to an unramified extension of local fields of odd residual characteristic p with l\neq p. We describe the l-modular principal series and show that the supercuspidal support of an irreducible l-modular representation is unique up to conjugacy.
Let F_0 be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic and let G be the unramified unitary group U(2,2) defined over F_0. In this paper, we give a classification of the irreducible smooth representations of G of non-integral level using the Hecke algebraic method developed by Allen Moy for GSp(4).
We transfer Knapp-Stein $R$-groups for unitary weakly unramified characters between a $p$-adic quasi-split group and its non-quasi-split inner forms, and provide the structure of those $R$-groups for a general connected reductive group over a $p$-adic field. This work supports previous studies on the behavior of $R$-groups between inner forms, and extends Keys' classification for unitary unramified cases of simply-connected, almost simple, semi-simple groups.
Let F_0 be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic and let G be the non quasi-split unramified unitary group in four variables defined over F_0. In this paper, we give a classification of the irreducible smooth representations of G of non-integral level using the Hecke algebraic method developed by Howe and Moy.
In [Inventiones mathematicae, 184 (2011)], Vollaard and Wedhorn defined a stratification on the special fiber of the unitary unramified PEL Rapoport-Zink space with signature $(1,n-1)$. They constructed an isomorphism between the closure of a stratum, called a closed Bruhat-Tits stratum, and a Deligne-Lusztig variety which is not of classical type. In this paper, we describe the $\ell$-adic cohomology groups over $\overline{\mathbb Q_{\ell}}$ of these Deligne-Lusztig varieties, where $\ell \not = p$. The computations involve the spectral sequence associated to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification o…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of odd residue characteristic $p$. Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$ in three variables, and $K$ be a maximal compact open subgroup of $G$. For an irreducible smooth representation $σ$ of $K$ over $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$, we prove that the compactly induced representation $\text{ind}^G _K σ$ is free of infinite rank over the spherical Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}(K, σ)$.
The description of irreducible representations of a group G can be seen as a question in harmonic analysis; namely, decomposing a suitable space of functions on G into irreducibles for the action of G x G by left and right multiplication. For a split p-adic reductive group G over a local non-archimedean field, unramified irreducible smooth representations are in bijection with semisimple conjugacy classes in the ``Langlands dual'' group. We generalize this description to an arbitrary spherical variety X of G as follows: Irreducible unramified quotients of the space $C_c^\infty(X)$ are in natur…
Let G be the unramified unitary group in three variables defined over a p-adic field with odd p. The conductors and newforms for representations of G are defined by using a certain family of open compact subgroups of G. In this paper, we determine the conductors of non-supercuspidal representations of G, and give explicit newforms in induced representations for non-supercuspidal generic representations.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of odd residue characteristic $p$. Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$, and $K$ be a maximal compact open subgroup of $G$. For an $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$-smooth representation $π$ of $G$ containing a weight $σ$ of $K$, we follow the work of Hu (\cite{Hu12}) to attach $π$ a certain $I_K$-subrepresentation, where $I_K$ is the Iwahori subgroup in $K$. In terms of such an $I_K$-subrepresentation, we prove a sufficient condition for $π$ to be non-finitely presented. We determine such an $I_K$-subrepresentation explicitly, when $π$ is eit…
Let U(N) be the quasi-split unitary group in N variables for a quadratic unramified extension of p-adic fields. We compute the characters of simple supercuspidal representations of twisted GL(N) and U(N). Comparing them by the endoscopic character relation, we determine the liftings of simple supercuspidal representations of U(N) to GL(N), under the assumption that p is not equal to 2.
Let G be the unramified unitary group in three variables defined over a p-adic field F of odd residual characteristic. In this paper, we investigate local newforms for irreducible admissible representations of G. We introduce a family of open compact subgroups {K_n} of G to define the local newforms for representations of G as the K_n-fixed vectors. We prove the existence of local newforms for generic representations and the multiplicity one property of the local newforms for admissible representations.
Let G be the unramified unitary group in three variables defined over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. In this paper, we establish a theory of newforms for the Rankin-Selberg integral for G introduced by Gelbart and Piatetski-Shapiro. We describe L and epsilon-factors defined through zeta integrals in terms of newforms. We show that zeta integrals of newforms for generic representations attain L-factors. As a corollary, we get an explicit formula for epsilon-factors of generic representations.
Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$ of odd residue characteristic $p$. In this paper, for any supersingular representation of $G$ that contains the Steinberg weight, we prove its pro-$p$-Iwahori invariants, as a right module over the pro-$p$-Iwahori--Hecke algebra of $G$, is \emph{not} simple.
Let G be the unramified unitary group in three variables defined over a p-adic field F of odd resudual characteristic. Gelbart, Piatetski-Shapiro and Baruch attached zeta integrals of Rankin-Selberg type to irreducible generic representations of G. In this paper, we formulate a conjecture on L- and epsilon-factors defined through zeta integrals in terms of local newforms for G, which is an analogue of the result by Casselman and Deligne for GL(2). We prove our conjecture for the generic supercuspidal representations of G.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$ and $I$ be an Iwahori subgroup of $G(F)$. Let $I_n$ is the $n$-th Moy-Prasad filtration subgroup of $I$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: to give some nice presentations of the Hecke algebra of connected, reductive groups with $I_n$-level structure; and to introduce the Tits group of the Iwahori-Weyl group of groups $G$ that split over an unramified extension of $F$. The first main result of this paper is a presentation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H(G(F),I_n)$, generalizing the previous work of Iwahori-Matsu…
Let $E/F$ be a unramified quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of odd characteristic $p$, and $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$. For an irreducible smooth representation $π$ of $G$ over $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$, with an underlying irreducible smooth representation $σ$ of a maximal compact open subgroup $K$, we prove that $π$ admits eigenvectors for an appropriate Hecke operator $T_σ$, and we classify those $π$ with non-zero eigenvalues for $T_σ$ by a tree argument; as a corollary, we show $π$ is supersingular if and only if it is supercuspidal.
The Peter-Weyl idempotent $e_{\mathcal{P}}$ of a parahoric subgroup ${\mathcal{P}}$ is the sum of the idempotents of irreducible representations of $\mathcal{P}$ which have a nonzero Iwahori fixed vector. The convolution algebra associated to $e_{\mathcal{P}}$ is called a Peter-Weyl Iwahori algebra. We show any Peter-Weyl Iwahori algebra is Morita equivalent to the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. Both the Iwahori-Hecke algebra and a Peter-Weyl Iwahori algbera have a natural $\mathbb{C}^\star$-algebra structure, and the Morita equivalence preserves irreducible hermitian and unitary modules. Both algebra…
This note presents a procedure to determine the reduction of the irreducible and the induced characters of the symmetric group in terms of the irreducible and induced characters of the hyperoctahedral group Key Words: Symmetric Group, Hyperoctahedral group, Representations, Characters, Re- duction.
We give the details of the construction of a map to restate a conjectural expression about adjoint group action on generic representations in L-packets. We give an application of the construction to give another proof of the classification of the Knapp-Stein R-group associated to a unitary unramified character of a torus. Finally we prove the conjecture for unramified L-packets.
We consider a dual pair $(G,G')$, in the sense of Howe, with $G$ compact acting on $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$ for an appropriate $n$ via the Weil Representation. Let $\widetilde{G}$ be the preimage of $G$ in the metaplectic group. Given a genuine irreducible unitary representation $Π$ of $\widetilde{G}$ we compute the Weyl symbol of orthogonal projection onto $L^2(\mathbb R^n)_Π$, the $Π$-isotypic component. We apply the result to obtain an explicit formula for the character of the corresponding irreducible unitary representation $Π'$ of $\widetilde{G'}$ and to compute of the wave front set of $Π'$ by…
We introduce a Schrödinger model for the unitary irreducible representations of a Heisenberg motion group and we show that the usual Weyl quantization then provides a Stratonovich-Weyl correspondence.
We study a contraction of the principal series representations of a noncompact semisimple Lie group to the unitary irreducible representations of its Cartan motion group by means of the Berezin-Weyl quantization on the coadjoint orbits associated with these representations.
In this paper we study the cohomology of PEL-type Rapoport-Zink spaces associated to unramified unitary similitude groups over $\Q_p$ in an odd number of variables. We extend the results of Kaletha-Minguez-Shin-White to construct a local Langlands correspondence for these groups and prove an averaging formula relating the cohomology of Rapport-Zink spaces to this correspondence. We use this formula to prove the Kottwitz conjecture for the groups we consider.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be an unramified quasi-split unitary group over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. The goal of this paper is to describe the supercuspidal representations within certain L-packets of $\mathbf{G}$, which are classified by Arthur and Mok using the theory of endoscopy. The description is given in terms of the cuspidal types constructed by Bushnell-Kutzko and Stevens. As a starting example, we require the parameters of our packets to satisfy certain regularity conditions, such that these packets consist of very cuspidal representations in the sense of Adler and Reeder.…
For certain nilpotent real Lie groups constructed as semidirect products, algebras of invariant differential operators on some coadjoint orbits are used in the study of boundedness properties of the Weyl-Pedersen calculus of their corresponding unitary irreducible representations. Our main result is applicable to all unitary irreducible representations of arbitrary 3-step nilpotent Lie groups.
We relate the classes of unitary and calibrated representations of cyclotomic Hecke algebras and, in particular, we show that for the most important deformation parameters these two classes coincide. We classify these representations in terms of both multipartition combinatorics and as the points in the fundamental alcove under the action of an affine Weyl group. Finally, we cohomologically construct these modules via BGG resolutions.
For any two involutions y,w in a Weyl group (y\le w), let P_{y,w} be the polynomial defined in [KL]. In this paper we define a new polynomial P^σ_{y,w} whose i-th coefficient is a_i-b_i where the i-th coefficient of P_{y,w} is a_i+b_i (a_i,b_i are natural numbers). These new polynomials are of interest for the theory of unitary representations of complex reductive groups. We present an algorithm for computing these polynomials.
We investigate continuity properties of the operators obtained by the magnetic Weyl calculus on nilpotent Lie groups, using modulation spaces associated with unitary representations of certain infinite-dimensional Lie groups.
Let $G$ be a simple group over a global function field $K$, and let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $G$. Suppose $K$ has two places $u$ and $v$ (satisfying a mild restriction on the residue field cardinality), at which the group $G$ is quasi-split, such that $π_u$ is tempered and $π_v$ is unramified and generic. We prove that $π$ is tempered at all unramified places $K_w$ at which $G$ is unramified quasi-split. The proof uses the Galois parametrization of cuspidal representations due to V. Lafforgue to relate the local Satake parameters of $π$ to Deligne's theory of Frobenius w…
Let $G$ be a quasi-split tamely ramified connected reductive group defined over a $p$-adic field $F$. We show that if $-1$ is in the $F$-points of the absolute Weyl group of $G$, then self-dual supercuspidal representations of $G(F)$ exist. Now assume further that $G$ is unramified and that the center of $G$ is connected. Let $π$ be a generic self-dual depth-zero regular supercuspidal representation of $G(F)$. We show that the Frobenius-Schur indicator of $π$ is given by the sign by which a certain distinguished element of the center of $G(F)$ of order two acts on $π$.
To each irreducible infinite dimensional representation $(π,\cH)$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\cA$, we associate a collection of irreducible norm-continuous unitary representations $π_λ^\cA$ of its unitary group $\U(\cA)$, whose equivalence classes are parameterized by highest weights in the same way as the irreducible bounded unitary representations of the group $\U_\infty(\cH) = \U(\cH) \cap (\1 + K(\cH))$ are. These are precisely the representations arising in the decomposition of the tensor products $\cH^{\otimes n} \otimes (\cH^*)^{\otimes m}$ under $\U(\cA)$. We show that these representations c…
In the first part of the paper we give some bounds for domains where the unitarizabile subquotients can show up in the parabolically induced representations of classical p-adic groups. Roughly, it can show up only if the central character of the inducing irreducible cuspidal representation is dominated in an appropriate way by the square root of the modular character of minimal parabolic subgroup. For representations supported by fixed parabolic subgroup, a more precise bound is given. There are also bounds for specific Bernstein components. A number of these upper bounds are best possible. Th…
Arthur has conjectured that the unitarity of a number of representations can be shown by finding appropriate automorphic realizations. This has been verified for classical groups by Moeglin and for the exceptional Chevalley group G_2 by Kim. In this paper we extend their results on spherical representations to the remaining exceptional groups E_6, E_7, E_8, and F_4. In particular we prove Arthur's conjecture that the spherical constituent of an unramified principal series of a Chevalley group over any local field of characteristic zero is unitarizable if its Langlands parameter coincides with …
We prove a formula for the dimension of Whittaker functionals of irreducible constituents of a regular unramified genuine principal series for covering groups. The formula explicitly relates such dimension to the Kazhdan-Lusztig representations associated with certain right cells of the Weyl group. We also state a refined version of the formula, which is proved under some natural assumption. The refined formula is also verified unconditionally in several important cases.
We develop the theory of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for root systems of type C. For an arbitrary root system of rank r and a positive integer n, these are Dirichlet series in r complex variables with analytic continuation and functional equations isomorphic to the associated Weyl group. In type C, they conjecturally arise from the Fourier-Whittaker coefficients of minimal parabolic Eisenstein series on an n-fold metaplectic cover of SO(2r+1). For any odd n, we construct an infinite family of Dirichlet series conjecturally satisfying the above analytic properties. The coefficients of …
We present some recent results on smooth vectors for unitary irreducible representations of nilpotent Lie groups. Applications to the Weyl-Pedersen calculus of pseudo-differential operators with symbols on the coadjoint orbits are also discussed.
We determine the unitary dual of the geometric graded Hecke algebras with {unequal} parameters which appear in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations for {exceptional} $p$-adic groups. The largest such algebra is of type $F_4.$ Via the Barbasch-Moy correspondence of unitarity applied to this setting, this is equivalent to the identification of the corresponding unitary unipotent representations with real central character of the $p$-adic groups. In order for this correspondence to be applicable here, we show (following Lusztig's geometric classification, and Barbasch and Moy's o…
We study the Iwahori-component of the Gelfand-Graev representation of a central cover of a split linear reductive group and utilize our results for three applications. In fact, it is advantageous to begin at the pro-$p$ level. Thus to begin we study the structure of a genuine pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra, establishing Iwahori-Matsumoto and Bernstein presentations. With this structure theory we first describe the pro-$p$ part of the Gelfand-Graev representation and then the more subtle Iwahori part. For the first application we relate the Gelfand-Graev representation to the metaplectic represe…
We survey some aspects of the pseudo-differential Weyl calculus for irreducible unitary representations of nilpotent Lie groups, ranging from the classical ideas to recently obtained results. The classical Weyl-Hörmander calculus is recovered for the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group. Our discussion concerns various extensions of this classical situation to arbitrary nilpotent Lie groups and to some infinite-dimensional Lie groups that allow us to handle the magnetic pseudo-differential calculus.
For a unitary unramified genuine principal series representation of a covering group, we study the associated R-group. We prove a formula relating the R-group to the dimension of the Whittaker space for the irreducible constituents of such a principal series representation. Moreover, for saturated covers of a semisimple simply-connected group, we also propose a simpler conjectural formula for such dimensions. This latter conjectural formula is verified in several cases, including covers of the symplectic groups.
