In this paper we consider the analytic continuation of the weighted Bergman spaces on the Lie ball $$\mathscr{D}=SO(2,n)/S(O(2) \times O(n))$$ and the corresponding holomorphic unitary (projective) representations of SO(2,n) on these spaces. These representations are known to be irreducible. Our aim is to decompose them under the subgroup SO(1,n) which acts as the isometry group of a totally real submanifold $\mathscr{X}$ of $\mathscr{D}$. We give a proof of a general decomposition theorem for certain unitary representations of semisimple Lie groups. In the particular case we are concerned with, we find an explicit formula for the Plancherel measure of the decomposition as the orthogonalising measure for certain hypergeometric polynomials. Moreover, we construct an explicit generalised Fourier transform that plays the role of the intertwining operator for the decomposition. We prove an inversion formula and a Plancherel formula for this transform. Finally we construct explicit realisations of the discrete part appearing in the decomposition and also for the minimal representation in this family.
We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of minimal holomorphic representations to symmetric subgroups in the case where the restriction is discretely decomposable. For holomorphic pairs the minimal holomorphic representation decomposes into a direct sum of lowest weight representations which is made explicit. For non-holomorphic pairs the restriction is shown to be irreducible and identified with a known representation. We further study a conjecture by Kobayashi on the behaviour of associated varieties under restriction and confirm this conjecture in the setting of this paper.
This article is devoted to branching problems for holomorphic discrete series representations of a conformal group $G$ of a tube domain $T_Omega$ over a symmetric cone $Ω$. More precisely, we analyse restrictions of such representations to the conformal group $G'$ of a tube domain $T_{Ω'}$ holomorphically embedded in $T_Ω$. The goal of this work is the explicit construction of the symmetry breaking and holographic operators in this geometrical setting. To do so, a stratification space for a symmetric cone is introduced. This structure put the light on a new functional model, called the \emph{s…
In this paper we study the branching law for the restriction from $SU(n,m)$ to $SO(n,m)$ of the minimal representation in the analytic continuation of the scalar holomorphic discrete series. We identify the the group decomposition with the spectral decomposition of the action of the Casimir operator on the subspace of $S(O(n) \times O(m))$-invariants. The Plancherel measure of the decomposition defines an $L^2$-space of functions, for which certain continuous dual Hahn polynomials furnish an orthonormal basis. It turns out that the measure has point masses precisely when $n-m>2$. Under these c…
We say a representation V of a group G has stability if its multiplicities m^{G}_{V}(λ) is dependent only on some equivalence class of λfor a sufficiently large parameter λ. In this paper, we prove that the restriction of a holomorphic discrete series representation with respect to any holomorphic symmetric pairs has stability. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on multiplicity-freeness of the branching laws in this setting. This condition is same as the sufficient condition given by the theory of visible actions. We prove a general theorem before we show the stabilit…
Let $\mathbb D=G/K$ be a complex bounded symmetric domain of tube type in a Jordan algebra $V_{\mathbb C}$, and let $D=H/L =\mathbb D\cap V$ be its real form in a Jordan algebra $V\subset V_{\mathbb C}$. The analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series on $\mathbb D$ forms a family of interesting representations of $G$. We consider the restriction on $D$ of the scalar holomorphic representations of $G$, as a representation of $H$. The unitary part of the restriction map gives then a generalization of the Segal-Bargmann transform. The group $L$ is a spherical subgroup of $K$ and we …
We consider the (projective) representations of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a symmetric tube domain $V\oplus iΩ$ that are obtained by analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series. For a representation corresponding to a discrete point in the Wallach set, we find the decomposition under restriction to the identity component of $GL(Ω)$. Using Riesz distributions, an explicit intertwining operator is constructed as an analytic continuation of an integral operator. The density for the Plancherel measure involves quotients of $Γ$-functions and the $c$-function for a symmet…
Let $G$ be a real semisimple Lie group, $K$ its maximal complex subgroup, and $G_C$ its complexification. It is known that all the $K$-finite matrix elements on $G$ admit holomorphic continuation to branching functions on $G_C$ having singularities at the a prescribed divisor. We propose a geometric explanation of this phenomenon. The note also contsins a general survey of holomorphic continuations of infinite-dimensional representations.
In this paper we explore the method of holomorphic induction for unitary representations of Banach--Lie groups. First we show that the classification of complex bundle structures on homogeneous Banach bundles over complex homogeneous spaces of real Banach--Lie groups formally looks as in the finite dimensional case. We then turn to a suitable concept of holomorphic unitary induction and show that this process preserves commutants. In particular, holomorphic induction from irreducible representations leads to irreducible ones. Finally we develop criteria to identify representations as holomorph…
In this paper we compute explicitly the norm of the vector-valued holomorphic discrete series representations, when its $K$-type is "almost multiplicity-free." As an application, we discuss the properties of highest weight modules, such as unitarizability, reducibility and composition series.
The purpose of this paper is to prove Duflo's conjecture for $(G,π, AN)$ where $G$ is a simple Lie group of Hermitian type and $π$ is a discrete series of $G$ and $AN$ is the maximal exponential solvable subgroup for an Iwasawa decomposition $G=KAN$. This is essentially reduced from the following general theorem we prove in this paper: let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group . Then a strongly elliptic $G$-coadjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}$ is holomorphic if and only if $\text{p}(\mathcal{O})$ is an open $AN$-coadjoint orbit, where $\text{p} : \mathfrak{g}^* \longrightarrow (\mathfrak{a}\oplus\m…
For T $Ω$ a Hermitian symmetric tube-type domain, a family ($π$ $μ$) $μ$$\in$C of holomorphic vector-valued representations is studied. The corresponding Wallach set is determined. The main tool is a realization of the representations as weighted L 2-spaces on the cone $Ω$ through the Laplace transform.
We study branching problem of the metaplectic representation of $Sp(2, \mathbb R)$ under its principle subgroup $SL(2, \mathbb R)$. We find the complete decomposition.
The unitary principal series representations of $G=GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ induced from a character of the maximal parabolic subgroup $P=(GL(1,\mathbb{C})\times GL(n-1,\mathbb{C}))\ltimes\mathbb{C}^{n-1}$ attain the minimal Gelfand--Kirillov dimension among all infinite-dimensional unitary representations of $G$. We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of these representations to symmetric subgroups of $G$.
In this paper branching rules for the fundamental representations of the symplectic groups in positive characteristic are found. The submodule structure of the restrictions of the fundamental modules for the group $Sp_{2n}(K)$ to the naturally embedded subgroup $Sp_{2n-2}(K)$ is determined. As a corollary, inductive systems of fundamental representations for $Sp_{\infty}(K)$ are classified. The submodule structure of the fundamental Weyl modules is refined.
Let G/H be a semisimple symmetric space. The main tool to embed a principal series representation of G into L^2(G/H) are the H-invariant distribution vectors. If G/H is a non-compactly causal symmetric space, then G/H can be realized as a boundary component of the complex crown $Ξ$. In this article we construct a minimal G-invariant subdomain $Ξ_H$ of $Ξ$ with G/H as Shilov boundary. Let $π$ be a spherical principal series representation of G. We show that the space of H-invariant distribution vectors of $π$, which admit a holomorphic extension to $Ξ_H$, is one dimensional. Furthermore we give…
The irreducible decomposition of a unitary representation often contains continuous spectrum when restricted to a non-compact subgroup. The author singles out a nice class of branching problems where each irreducible summand occurs discretely with finite multiplicity (admissible restrictions). Basic theory and new perspectives of admissible restrictions are presented from both analytic and algebraic view points. We also discuss some applications of admissible restrictions to modular varieties and $L^p$-harmonic analysis.
Let $X=H/L$ be an irreducible real bounded symmetric domain realized as a real form in an Hermitian symmetric domain $D=G/K$. The intersection $S$ of the Shilov boundary of $D$ with $X$ defines a distinguished subset of the topological boundary of $X$ and is invariant under $H$ and can also be realized as $S=H/P$ for certain parabolic subgroup $P$ of $H$. We study the spherical representations $Ind_P^H(\lam)$ of $H$ induced from $P$. We find formulas for the spherical functions in terms of the Macdonald ${}_2F_1$ hypergeometric function. This generalizes the earlier result of Faraut-Koranyi fo…
We give a complete description of the discrete spectra in the branching law $Π|_{G'}$ with respect to the pair $(G,G')=(O(p,q), O(p',q') \times O(p'',q''))$ for irreducible unitary representations $Π$ of $G$ that are "geometric quantization" of minimal elliptic coadjoint orbits. We also construct explicitly all holographic operators and prove a closed Parseval-type formula.
The restriction of a supercuspidal representation of SL_2(k), for k a local nonarchimedean field, to a maximal compact subgroup decomposes as a multiplicity-free direct sum of irreducible representations. We explicitly describe this decomposition in the case that the residual characteristic is odd, and determine how the spectrum of this decomposition varies as a function of the parameters describing the supercuspidal representation.
The space of elliptic modular forms of fixed weight and level can be identfied with a space of intertwining operators, from a holomorphic discrete series representation of SL2(R) to a space of automorphic forms. Moreover, multiplying elliptic modular forms corresponds to a branching problem involving tensor products of holomorphic discrete series representations. In this paper, we explicitly connect the ring structure on spaces of modular forms with branching problems in the representation theory of real semisimple Lie groups. Furthermore, we construct a family of intertwining operators from d…
On restriction to the maximal compact subgroup $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$, an unramified principal series representation of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,F)$ decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional irreducibles each appearing with finite multiplicity. We describe a coarser decomposition into components which, although reducible in general, capture the equivalences between the irreducible constituents.
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space over a $p$-adic field $F$, the algebraic groups $G$ and $H$ being assumed semisimple of relative rank $1$. One of the branching problems for the Steinberg representation $\St_G$ of $G$ is the determination of the dimension of the intertwining space ${\rm Hom}_H (\St_G ,π)$, for any irreducible representation $π$ of $H$. In this work we do not compute this dimension, but show how it is related to the dimensions of some other intertwining spaces ${\rm Hom}_{K_i} ({\tilde π} ,1)$, for a certain finite family $K_i$, $i=1,...,r$, of anisotropic subgroups of …
We study branching multiplicity spaces of complex classical groups in terms of GL(2) representations. In particular, we show how combinatorics of GL(2) representations are intertwined to make branching rules under the restriction of GL(n) to GL(n-2). We also discuss analogous results for the symplectic and orthogonal groups.
We consider the spherical complementary series of rank one Lie groups $H_n=\SO_0(n, 1; \mathbb F)$ for $\mathbb F=\mathbb R, \mathbb C, \mathbb H$. We prove that there exist finitely many discrete components in its restriction under the subgroup $H_{n-1}=\SO_0(n-1, 1; \mathbb F)$. This is proved by imbedding the complementary series into analytic continuation of holomorphic discrete series of $G_n=SU(n, 1)$, $SU(n, 1)\times SU(n, 1)$ and $SU(2n, 2)$ and by the branching of holomorphic representations under the corresponding subgroup $G_{n-1}$.
In this paper we explicitly construct $G_1$-intertwining operators between holomorphic discrete series representations $\mathcal{H}$ of a Lie group $G$ and those $\mathcal{H}_1$ of a subgroup $G_1\subset G$ when $(G,G_1)$ is a symmetric pair of holomorphic type. More precisely, we construct $G_1$-intertwining projection operators from $\mathcal{H}$ onto $\mathcal{H}_1$ as differential operators, in the case $(G,G_1)=(G_0\times G_0,ΔG_0)$ and both $\mathcal{H}$, $\mathcal{H}_1$ are of scalar type, and also construct $G_1$-intertwining embedding operators from $\mathcal{H}_1$ into $\mathcal{H}$ …
Using Bruhat-Tits theory, we analyse the restriction of depth-zero representations of a semisimple simply connected $p$-adic group $G$ to a maximal compact subgroup $K$. We prove the coincidence of branching rules within classes of Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representations. Furthermore, we show that under obvious compatibility conditions, the restriction to $K$ of a Deligne-Lusztig supercuspidal representation of $G$ intertwines with the restriction of a depth-zero principal series representation in infinitely many distinct components of arbitrarily large depth. Several qualitative and qua…
We decompose the restriction of ramified principal series representations of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathrm{k})$ to its maximal compact subgroup $K=\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$. Its decomposition is dependent on the degree of ramification of the inducing characters and can be characterized in terms of filtrations of the Iwahori subgroup in $K$. We establish several irreducibility results and illustrate the decomposition with some examples.
Building on prior work, we analyze the decomposition of the restriction of an irreducible representation of SL_2(k), for k a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic, to a maximal compact subgroup K. The pattern of the decomposition varies between principal series and different supercuspidal representations, whereas the K-representations which occur in the "tail end" of these decompositions are precisely those occurring in the decomposition of depth-zero supercuspidal representations. Various applications are considered.
We present a holomorphic representation of the Jacobi algebra $\mathfrak{h}_n\rtimes \mathfrak{sp}(n,\R)$ by first order differential operators with polynomial coefficients on the manifold $\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathcal{D}_n$. We construct the Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on which these differential operators act.
In this paper we study branching laws for certain unitary representations. This is done on the smooth vectors via a version of the {\it period integrals}, studied in number theory, and also closely connected to the {\it symmetry-breaking operators}, introduced by T.~Kobayashi. We exhibit non-vanishing symmetry breaking operators for the restriction of a representation $Π$ in the discrete spectrum for real hyperboloids to representations of smaller orthogonal groups. In the last part we discuss some conjectures for the restriction of representations in Arthur packets containing the representati…
Let $G=\operatorname{O}(1,n+1)$ with maximal compact subgroup $K$ and let $Π$ be a unitary irreducible representation of $G$ with non-trivial $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-cohomology. Then $Π$ occurs inside a principal series representation of $G$, induced from the $\operatorname{O}(n)$-representation $\bigwedge\nolimits^p(\mathbb{C}^n)$ and characters of a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$ at the limit of the complementary series. Considering the subgroup $G'=\operatorname{O}(1,n)$ of $G$ with maximal compact subgroup $K'$, we prove branching laws and explicit Plancherel formulas for the restrictions to…
In this paper we consider the restriction of a unitary irreducible representation of type $A_{\mathfrak q}(λ)$ of $GL(4,{\mathbb R})$ to reductive subgroups $H$ which are the fixpoint sets of an involution. We obtain a formula for the restriction to the symplectic group and to $GL(2,{\mathbb C})$, and as an application we construct in the last section some representations in the cuspidal spectrum of the symplectic and the complex general linear group. In addition to working directly with the cohmologically induced module to obtain the branching law, we also introduce the useful concept of pseu…
Consider the restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a Lie group $G$ to its subgroup $H$. Kirillov's revolutionary idea on the orbit method suggests that the multiplicity of an irreducible $H$-module $ν$ occurring in the restriction $π|_H$ could be read from the coadjoint action of $H$ on $O^G \cap pr^{-1}(O^H)$ provided $π$ and $ν$ are "geometric quantizations" of a $G$-coadjoint orbit $O^G$ and an $H$-coadjoint orbit $O^H$,respectively, where $pr: \sqrt{-1} g^{\ast} \to \sqrt{-1} h^{\ast}$ is the projection dual to the inclusion $h \subset g$ of Lie algebras. Such results…
A visible action on a complex manifold is a holomorphic action that admits a $J$-transversal totally real submanifold $S$. It is said to be strongly visible if there exists an orbit-preserving anti-holomorphic diffeomorphism $σ$ such that $σ|_S = \operatorname{id}_S$. Let $G$ be the Heisenberg group and $H$ a non-trivial connected closed subgroup of $G$. We prove that any complex homogeneous space $D = G^{\mathbb{C}}/H^{\mathbb{C}}$ admits a strongly visible $L$-action, where $L$ stands for a connected closed subgroup of $G$ explicitly constructed through a co-exponential basis of $H$ in $G$. …
We study the decomposition as an $\textrm{SO}(3)$-module of the multiplicity space corresponding to the branching from $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$ to $\textrm{SO}(n)$. Here, $\textrm{SO}(n)$ (resp.\ $\textrm{SO}(3)$) is considered embedded in $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$ in the upper left-hand block (resp.\ lower right-hand block). We show that when the highest weight of the irreducible representation of $\textrm{SO}(n)$ interlaces the highest weight of the irreducible representation of $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$, then the multiplicity space decomposes as a tensor product of $\lfloor (n+2)/2\rfloor$ reducible representa…
The minimal representation $π$ of the indefinite orthogonal group $O(m+1,2)$ is realized on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on $\mathbb R^m$ with respect to the measure $|x|^{-1} dx_1... dx_m$. This article gives an explicit integral formula for the holomorphic extension of $π$ to a holomorphic semigroup of $O(m+3, \mathbb C)$ by means of the Bessel function. Taking its `boundary value', we also find the integral kernel of the `inversion operator' corresponding to the inversion element on the Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{m,1}$.
Let G be a connected, real, semisimple Lie group contained in its complexification G_C, and let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. We construct a K_C-G double coset domain in G_C, and we show that the action of G on the K-finite vectors of any irreducible unitary representation of G has a holomorphic extension to this domain. For the resultant holomorphic extension of K-finite matrix coefficients we obtain estimates of the singularities at the boundary, as well as majorant/minorant estimates along the boundary. We obtain L^\infty bounds on holomorphically extended automorphic functions on G…
Let $G$ be a group and $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. The classical branching rule (or symmetry breaking) asks: For an irreducible representation $π$ of $G$, determine the occurrence of an irreducible representation $σ$ of $H$ in the restriction of $π$ to $H$. The reciprocal branching problem of this classical branching problem is to ask: For an irreducible representation $σ$ of $H$, find an irreducible representation $π$ of $G$ such that $σ$ occurs in the restriction of $π$ to $H$. For automorphic representations of classical groups, the branching problem has been addressed by the well-known globa…
The analysis of branching problems for restriction of representations brings the concept of symmetry breaking transform and holographic transform. Symmetry breaking operators decrease the number of variables in geometric models, whereas holographic operators increase it. Various expansions in classical analysis can be interpreted as particular occurrences of these transforms. From this perspective, we investigate two remarkable families of differential operators: the Rankin-Cohen operators and the holomorphic Juhl conformally covariant operators. Then we establish for the corresponding symmetr…
We prove several results asserting that the action of a Banach-Lie group on Hilbert spaces of holomorphic sections of a holomorphic Hilbert space bundle over a complex Banach manifold is multiplicity free. These results require the existence of compatible antiholomorphic bundle maps and certain multiplicity freeness assumptions for stabilizer groups. For the group action on the base, the notion of an $(S,σ)$-weakly visible action (generalizing T.Koboyashi's visible actions) provides an effective way to express the assumptions in an economical fashion. In particular, we derive a version for gro…
In this paper we study the construction of holomorphic gauge invariant operators for general quiver gauge theories with flavour symmetries. Using a characterisation of the gauge invariants in terms of equivalence classes generated by permutation actions, along with representation theory results in symmetric groups and unitary groups, we give a diagonal basis for the 2-point functions of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic operators. This involves a generalisation of the previously constructed Quiver Restricted Schur operators to the flavoured case. The 3-point functions are derived and shown to b…
This is a semi--expository update and rewrite of my 1974 AMS AMS Memoir describing Plancherel formulae and partial Dolbeault cohomology realizations for standard tempered representations for general real reductive Lie groups. Even after so many years, much of that Memoir is up to date, but of course there have been a number of refinements, advances and new developments, most of which have applied to smaller classes of real reductive Lie groups. Here we rewrite that AMS Memoir in in view of these advances and indicate the ties with some of the more recent (or at least less classical) approaches…
We count the connected components in the moduli space of PU(p,q)-representations of the fundamental group for a closed oriented surface. The components are labelled by pairs of integers which arise as topological invariants of the flat bundles associated to the representations. Our results show that for each allowed value of these invariants, which are bounded by a Milnor-Wood type inequality, there is a unique non-empty connected component. Interpreting the moduli space of representations as a moduli space of Higgs bundles, we take a Morse theoretic approach using a certain smooth proper func…
In this paper we show that the multiplicities of holomorphic discrete series representations relatively to reductive subgroups satisfy the credo "Quantization commutes with reduction".
Let G be a semi-simple non-compact Lie group with unitary lowest/highest weight representations. We consider explicitly the relation between three types of representations of G: positive energy (unitary lowest weight)representations, (holomorphic) discrete series representations and non-unitary finite-dimensional irreps. We consider mainly the conformal groups SO(n,2) treating in full detail the cases n=1,3,4.
