We count the connected components in the moduli space of PU(p,q)-representations of the fundamental group for a closed oriented surface. The components are labelled by pairs of integers which arise as topological invariants of the flat bundles associated to the representations. Our results show that for each allowed value of these invariants, which are bounded by a Milnor-Wood type inequality, there is a unique non-empty connected component. Interpreting the moduli space of representations as a moduli space of Higgs bundles, we take a Morse theoretic approach using a certain smooth proper function on the Higgs moduli space. A key step is the identification of the function's local minima as moduli spaces of holomorphic triples. We prove that these moduli spaces of triples are non-empty and irreducible.
We give a complete description of the Bridgeland stability manifold for the bounded derived category of holomorphic triples over a smooth projective curve of genus 1 as a connected, four dimensional complex manifold.
We introduce an generalization of the theta divisor to the theory of holomorphic triples on a smooth projective curve $X$. We show that a given triple $T=(E_1 \to E_0)$ is $α$-semistable iff there exists an orthogonal tripe $S=(F_1 \to F_0)$ with given numerical invariants. This yields globally generated theta line bundles on the moduli space of semistable triples.
There is an isomorphism between the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable holomorphic triples and some of the critical submanifolds of the moduli space of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank three, whose elements $(E,φ^k)$ correspond to variations of Hodge structure, VHS. There are special embeddings on the moduli spaces of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank three. The main objective here is to study the cohomology of the critical submanifolds of such moduli spaces, extending those embeddings to moduli spaces of holomorphic triples.
We prove that the moduli stack of Bridgeland semistable holomorphic triples over a curve of $g(C)\geq 1$ with a fixed numerical class and phase is an algebraic stack of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$ and admits a proper good moduli space. We prove that this also holds for a class of Bridgeland stability conditions on the category of holomorphic chains $\mathcal{T}_{C,n}$. In the process, we construct an explicit geometric realisation of $\mathcal{T}_{C,n}$ and prove the open heart property for noetherian hearts in admissible categories of $D^b(X)$, where $X$ is a smooth projective variety over …
We introduce equations for special metrics, and notions of stability for some new types of augmented holomorphic bundles. These new examples include holomorphic extensions, and in this case we prove a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence between a certain deformation of the Hermitian-Einstein equations and our definition of stability for an extension.
We define a Fourier-Mukai transform for a triple consisting of two holomorphic vector bundles over an elliptic curve and a homomorphism between them. We prove that in some cases the transform preserves the natural stability condition for a triple. We also define a Nahm transform for solutions to natural gauge-theoretic equations on a triple -- vortices -- and explore some of its basic properties. Our approach combines direct methods with dimensional reduction techniques, relating triples over a curve with vector bundles over the product of the curve with the complex projective line.
A holomorphic triple over a compact Riemann surface consists of two holomorphic vector bundles and a holomorphic map between them. After fixing the topological types of the bundles and a real parameter, there exist moduli spaces of stable holomorphic triples. In this paper we study non-emptiness, irreducibility, smoothness, and birational descriptions of these moduli spaces for a certain range of the parameter. Our results have important applications to the study of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface into unitary Lie groups of indefinite signature, whic…
Using the $L^2$ norm of the Higgs field as a Morse function, we study the moduli spaces of $U(p,q)$-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface. We require that the genus of the surface be at least two, but place no constraints on $(p,q)$. A key step is the identification of the function's local minima as moduli spaces of holomorphic triples. We prove that these moduli spaces of triples are irreducible and non-empty. Because of the relation between flat bundles and fundamental group representations, we can interpret our conclusions as results about the number of connected components in the moduli spa…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic triple $(E_1,E_2,ϕ)$ on $X$ consists of two holomorphic vector bundles $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$ over $X$ and a holomorphic map $ϕ\colon E_{2} \to E_{1}$. There is a concept of stability for triples which depends on a real parameter $σ$. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable triples with $\mathrm{rk}(E_1)=\mathrm{rk}(E_2)=2$, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures (in the cases that they are smooth and compact). This gives in particular the Poincar{é} pol…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic triple $(E_1,E_2,ϕ)$ on $X$ consists of two holomorphic vector bundles $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $X$ and a holomorphic map $ϕ:E_2 \to E_1$. There is a concept of stability for triples which depends on a real parameter $σ$. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable triples with $\rk(E_1)=3$, $\rk(E_2)=1$, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures. This gives in particular the Poincaré polynomials of these moduli spaces. As a byproduct, we recover the Hodge polyn…
Let $p$ be a prime number. Let $X/E$ be a geometrically connected, smooth, quasi-projective variety over a finite extension $E/\mathbb{Q}_p$. In this paper I demonstrate the existence of isomorphs of the tempered (and hence also étale) fundamental group of $X/E$ which are labeled by distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, just as isomorphs of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface $Σ$ may be labeled by Riemann surfaces (i.e. complex holomorphic structures) $Σ'$ in the Teichmuller space of $Σ$. This is the starting point of the theory elaborated in [Joshi, 2021a,b,c, 2022] for which thi…
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures satisfying the quaternionic relations. A holomorphic Lagrangian variety on a hypercomplex manifold with trivial canonical bundle is a holomorphic subvariety which is calibrated by a form associated with the holomorphic volume form; this notion is a generalization of the usual holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties known in hyperkaehler geometry. An HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) metric on a hypercomplex manifold is a metric determined by a local potential, in a similar way to the Kaehler metric. We prove that a ba…
We study triples of graded rings defined over the deformation spaces for certain one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau threefolds. These rings are analogues of the rings of modular forms, quasi-modular forms and almost-holomorphic modular forms. We also discuss some of their applications in solving the holomorphic anomaly equations.
A group morphism is constructed, which can be realized as the induced morphism of fundamental groups from a holomorphic map between compact Kahler manifolds, but can not be realized by a holomorphic map between smooth projective varieties. And it is also proved that there exists no such example between abelian groups.
We prove that the space of surjective holomorphic maps from a compact complex manifold to a compact Kähler manifold with trivial canonical class and finite fundamental group is discrete.
We prove that the moduli spaces A_3(D) of polarized abelian threefolds with polarizations of types D=(1,1,2), (1,2,2), (1,1,3) or (1,3,3) are unirational. The result is based on the study of families of simple coverings of elliptic curves of degree 2 or 3 and on the study of the corresponding period mappings associated with holomorphic differentials with trace 0. In particular we prove the unirationality of the Hurwitz space H_{3,A}(Y) which parameterizes simply branched triple coverings of an elliptic curve Y with determinants of the Tschirnhausen modules isomorphic to A^{-1}.
We study holomorphic $(n+1)$-chains $E_n\to E_{n-1} \to >... \to E_0$ consisting of holomorphic vector bundles over a compact Riemann surface and homomorphisms between them. A notion of stability depending on $n$ real parameters was introduced in the work of the first two authors and moduli spaces were constructed by the third one. In this paper we study the variation of the moduli spaces with respect to the stability parameters. In particular we characterize a parameter region where the moduli spaces are birationally equivalent. A detailed study is given for the case of 3-chains, generalizing…
The paper contains a fundamental defect in its framework of using the gauge action to study the rigidity problem. As a result, the calculations leading to the main formula is also incorrect.
We initiate the study of holomorphically convex groups: groups that can be realized as fundamental groups of smooth complex projective varieties with holomorphically convex universal covers. If $G$ is a holomorphically convex group of cohomological dimension two, we show that $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface. As a consequence, we show that if a linear group $G$ has (rational) cohomological dimension two and is the fundamental group of a smooth complex projective variety, then $G$ is a (virtual) surface group.
We show that a holomorphic two-form $θ$ on a smooth algebraic variety X localizes the virtual fundamental class of the moduli of stable maps $\mgn(X,β)$ to the locus where $θ$ degenerates; it then enables us to define the localized GW-invariant, an algebro-geometric analogue of the local invariant of Lee and Parker in symplectic geometry, which coincides with the ordinary GW-invariant when X is proper. It is deformation invariant. Using this, we prove formulas for low degree GW-invariants of minimal general type surfaces with p_g>0 conjectured by Maulik and Pandharipande.
In [16] the fundamental relationship between stable quotient invariants and the B-model for local P2 in all genera was studied under some specialization of equivariant variables. We generalize the argument of [16] to full equivariant settings without the specialization. Our main results are the proof of holomorphic anomaly equations for the equivariant Gromov-Witten theories of local P2 and local P3. We also state the generalization to full equivariant formal quintic theory of the result in [17].
We study anti-holomorphic involutions of the moduli space of principal $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group. These involutions are defined by fixing anti-holomorphic involutions on both $X$ and $G$. We analyze the fixed point locus in the moduli space and their relation with representations of the orbifold fundamental group of $X$ equipped with the anti-holomorphic involution. We also study the relation with branes. This generalizes work by Biswas--Garc\'ıa-Prada--Hurtubise and Baraglia--Schaposnik.
Let us say that a map of arcwise connected topological spaces (having the homotopy type of CW-complexes) is a pseudo-homeomorphism if it induces an isomorphism of the first integer homology groups and an epimorphism of the second integer homology groups. We prove that any invariant of a topological space w.r.t. pseudo-homeomorphisms is an invariant of the fundamental group of this space. We also describe a necessary condition for the fundamental groups to be distinguished by such invariants. As an example we show that the invariant used in math.AG/9805056 to distinguish the fundamental groups …
The paper develops the fundamentals of quaternionic holomorphic curve theory. The holomorphic functions in this theory are conformal maps from a Riemann surface into the 4-sphere, i.e., the quaternionic projective line. Basic results such as the Riemann-Roch Theorem for quaternionic holomorphic vector bundles, the Kodaira embedding and the Pluecker relations for linear systems are proven. Interpretations of these results in terms of the differential geometry of surfaces in 3- and 4-space are hinted at throughout the paper. Applications to estimates of the Willmore functional on constant mean c…
We prove a very general Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence on arbitrary compact Hermitian manifolds. This correspondence refers to moduli spaces of "universal holomorphic oriented pairs". Most of the classical moduli problems in complex geometry (e. g. holomorphic bundles with reductive structure groups, holomorphic pairs, holomorphic Higgs pairs, Witten triples, arbitrary quiver moduli problems) are special cases of this universal classification problem. Our Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence relates the complex geometric concept "polystable oriented holomorphic pair" to the existence of a reduct…
Let X be a complex analytic space. A short analytic arc is a holomorphic map of the closed unit disc to X such that only the origin is mapped to a singular point. In contrast with the space of formal arcs studied by Nash, the moduli space of short analytic arcs usually has infinitely many connected components. We describe these for surface singularities, in terms of certain conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of the link. For quotient singularities (in any dimension), this gives a concrete realization of the McKay correspondence. Our results also give new connections between a surface c…
Using the L^2 norm of the Higgs field as a Morse function, we study the moduli spaces of U(p,q)-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface. We require that the genus of the surface be at least two, but place no constraints on (p,q). A key step is the identification of the function's local minima as moduli spaces of holomorphic triples. In a companion paper "Moduli spaces of holomorphic triples over compact Riemann surfaces" (math.AG/0211428) we prove that these moduli spaces of triples are non-empty and irreducible. Because of the relation between flat bundles and fundamental group representations, …
A compact Kähler manifold is shown to be simply-connected if its `symmetric cotangent algebra' is trivial. Conjecturally, such a manifold should even be rationally connected. The relative version is also shown: a proper surjective connected holomorphic map between connected complex manifolds induces an isomorphism of fundamental groups if its smooth fibres are as above, and if the domain is Kähler.
We prove three fundamental properties of counting holomorphic cylinders in log Calabi-Yau surfaces: positivity, integrality and the gluing formula. Positivity and integrality assert that the numbers of cylinders, defined via virtual techniques, are in fact nonnegative integers. The gluing formula roughly says that cylinders can be glued together to form longer cylinders, and the number of longer cylinders equals the product of the numbers of shorter cylinders. Our approach uses Berkovich geometry, tropical geometry, deformation theory and the ideas in the proof of associativity relations of Gr…
To every oriented tree, we associate a moduli problem for sheaves over a projective manifold $X$. We define the corresponding notion of semistability and establish the existence of moduli spaces. Applying the results to the tree *->*, we obtain a GIT construction for the moduli space of holomorphic triples of Bradlow and Garcia-Prada.
We investigate the holonomy group of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. As a consequence, known decompositions for tangent sheaves of varieties with trivial canonical divisor are refined. In particular, we show that up to finite quasi-étale covers, varieties with strongly stable tangent sheaf are either Calabi-Yau or irreduc…
This article is devoted to examples of (orbifold) Kähler groups from the perspective of the so-called Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity. It aims at pointing out that every quasi-projective complex manifold with an 'interesting' fundamental group gives rise to interesting instances of this long-standing open question. Complements of line arrangements are one of the better known classes of quasi-projective complex surfaces with an interesting fundamental group. We solve the corresponding instance of the Shafarevich conjecture partially giving a proof that the universal covering sur…
Topological-Holomorphic ${\mathcal N} =4$ Gauge Theory: From Langlands Duality of Holomorphic Invariants to Mirror Symmetry of Quasi-topological Strings
The first goal of the article is to solve several fundamental problems in the theory of holomorphic bundles over non-algebraic manifolds: For instance we prove that stability and semi-stability are Zariski open properties in families when the Gauduchon degree map is a topological invariant, or when the parameter manifold is compact. Second we show that, for a generically stable family of bundles over a Kähler manifold, the Petersson-Weil form extends as a closed positive current on the whole parameter space of the family. This extension theorem uses classical tools from Yang-Mills theory devel…
In this article we study holomorphic deformations of the filtered Gauss-Manin systems associated to a vanishing period integral. For that purpose we introduce a new sub-class of the class of monogenic (a,b)-modules (Brieskorn modules) which was studied in our previous article [B. 09]. We show that these new objects, called ?themes?, have good functorial properties and that there exists a canonical order on the roots of the corresponding Bernstein polynomial. We construct, for given fundamental invariants, a finite dimensional versal holomorphic family and we show that, when all themes with the…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler space with klt singularities and vanishing first Chern class. We prove the Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors on the smooth locus of $X$: any such tensor is parallel with respect to the singular Ricci-flat metrics. As a consequence, after a finite quasi-étale cover $X$ splits off a complex torus of the maximum possible dimension. We then proceed to decompose the tangent sheaf of $X$ according to its holonomy representation. In particular, we classify those $X$ which have strongly stable tangent sheaf: up to quasi-étale covers, these are either irreducible Cal…
For a stratified symplectic space, a suitable concept of stratified Kaehler polarization, defined in terms of an appropriate Lie-Rinehart algebra, encapsulates Kaehler polarizations on the strata and the behaviour of the polarizations across the strata and leads to the notion of stratified Kaehler space. This notion establishes an intimate relationship between nilpotent orbits, singular reduction, invariant theory, reductive dual pairs, Jordan triple systems, symmetric domains, and pre-homogeneous spaces; in particular, in the world of singular Poisson geometry, the closures of principal holom…
We construct a global geometric model for the bosonic sector and Killing spinor equations of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity coupled to a chiral non-linear sigma model and a Spin$^{c}_0$ structure. The model involves a Lorentzian metric $g$ on a four-manifold $M$, a complex chiral spinor and a map $φ\colon M\to \mathcal{M}$ from $M$ to a complex manifold $\mathcal{M}$ endowed with a novel geometric structure which we call chiral triple. Using this geometric model, we show that if $M$ is spin the Kähler-Hodge condition on a complex manifold $\mathcal{M}$ is enough to guarantee the…
