Recently, a class of gravitational backgrounds in 3+1 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to a Lifshitz theory describing critical phenomena in 2+1 dimensions with critical exponent $z\geq 1$. We numerically explore black holes in these backgrounds for a range of values of $z$. We find drastically different behavior for $z>2$ and $z<2$. We find that for $z>2$ ($z<2$) the Lifshitz fixed point is repulsive (attractive) when going to larger radial parameter $r$. For the repulsive $z>2$ backgrounds, we find a continuous family of black holes satisfying a finite energy condition. However, for $z<2$ we find that the finite energy condition is more restrictive, and we expect only a discrete set of black hole solutions, unless some unexpected cancellations occur. For all black holes, we plot temperature $T$ as a function of horizon radius $r_0$. For $z\lessapprox 1.761$ we find that this curve develops a negative slope for certain values of $r_0$ possibly indicating a thermodynamic instability.
We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories with a cosmological constant and U(1)^N gauge symmetry, considering metrics asymptotically approaching the Lifshiftz metric. We study the dependence of the phase diagram on the value of the dynamical exponent. Along the way, we apply holographic renormalization and propose a counterterm valid for arbitrary dimension and dynamical exponent in our setup.
We study $R^{2}$ corrections to five-dimensional asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes by adding Gauss-Bonnet terms in the effective action. For the zero-temperature backgrounds we obtain exact solutions in both pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity and Gauss-Bonnet gravity with non-trivial matter. The dynamical exponent undergoes finite renormalization in the latter case. For the finite-temperature backgrounds we obtain black brane solutions perturbatively and calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density $η/s$. The KSS bound is still violated but unlike the relativistic counterparts, the causal…
We investigate several aspects of exact black hole solutions in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime, which were proposed in 0812.0530. Firstly, we calculate the tidal forces and find that in the near horizon region of such black hole backgrounds, the tidal forces diverge in the near extremal limit. Secondly, we evaluate the Wilson loops in both extremal and finite temperature cases. Finally, we obtain the corresponding shear viscosity and square of the sound speed and find that the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density takes the universal value $1/4π$ in arbitrary dimensions while the squa…
A model of 3+1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant coupled to abelian gauge fields has been proposed as a gravity dual for Lifshitz like critical phenomena in 2+1 dimensions. The finite temperature behavior is described by black holes that are asymptotic to the Lifshitz fixed point geometry. There is a one-parameter family of charged black holes, where the magnitude of the charge is uniquely determined by the black hole area. These black holes are thermodynamically stable and become extremal in the limit of vanishing size. The theory also has a discrete spectrum of localize…
We calculated drag force for asymptotically Lifshitz space times in (d + 2)-dimensions with arbitrary dynamical exponent $z$. We find that at zero and finite temperature the drag force has a non-zero value. Using the drag force calculations, we investigate the DC conductivity of strange metals.
Recently, a class of gravitational backgrounds in 3+1 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to a Lifshitz theory describing critical phenomena in 2+1 dimensions with critical exponent $z\geq 1$. We continue our earlier work \cite{Bertoldi:2009vn}, exploring the thermodynamic properties of the "black brane" solutions with horizon topology $\mathbb{R}^2$. We find that the black branes satisfy the relation $\mathcal{E}=\frac{2}{2+z}Ts$ where $\mathcal{E}$ is the energy density, $T$ is the temperature, and $s$ is the entropy density. This matches the expected behavior for a 2+1 dimens…
Under a Scherk-Schwarz compactification, the AdS soliton and black brane provide a dual description to a confinement/deconfinement phase transition. We extend this construction to asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes. In particular, we show that there must be a phase transition between the soliton and black hole if the solutions exist. We also construct these solutions numerically and compute the phase diagram.
Black holes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime provide a window onto finite temperature effects in strongly coupled Lifshitz models. We add a Maxwell gauge field and charged matter to a recently proposed gravity dual of 2+1 dimensional Lifshitz theory. This gives rise to charged black holes with scalar hair, which correspond to the superconducting phase of holographic superconductors with z > 1 Lifshitz scaling. Along the way we analyze the global geometry of static, asymptotically Lifshitz black holes at arbitrary critical exponent z > 1. In all known exact solutions there is a null curvatu…
We study asymptotically Lifshitz solutions with critical exponent $z \neq 1$ in Horava gravity in three and four spacetime dimensions. For $z=2$ and $z=3/2$, we find a novel class of numerical solutions with regular universal horizon, but are characterized by non-analytic behavior near infinity. In the interior, inside the universal horizon, the unit timelike vector field associated with the preferred time foliation exhibits oscillatory behavior, qualitatively similar to that found earlier in asymptotically flat solutions. For $z>2$ no solutions of this type appear to exist. We comment on pote…
Horava gravity theory possesses global Lifshitz space as a solution and has been conjectured to provide a natural framework for Lifshitz holography. We derive the conditions on the two derivative Horava gravity Lagrangian that are necessary for static, asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with flat transverse dimensions to contain a universal horizon, which plays a similar thermodynamic role as the Killing horizon in general relativity. Specializing to z=2 in 1+2 dimensions, we then numerically construct such regular solutions over the whole spacetime. We calculate the mass for these solutions a…
We consider scalar field perturbations about asymptotically Lifshitz black holes with dynamical exponent z in D dimensions. We show that, for suitable boundary conditions, these Lifshitz black holes are stable under scalar field perturbations. For z=2, we explicitly compute the quasinormal mode frecuencies, which result to be purely imaginary, and then obtain the damping-off of the scalar field perturbation in these backgrounds. The general analysis includes, in particular, the z=3 black hole solution of three-dimensional massive gravity.
Static asymptotically Lifshitz wormholes and black holes in vacuum are shown to exist for a class of Lovelock theories in d=2n+1>7 dimensions, selected by requiring that all but one of their n maximally symmetric vacua are AdS of radius l and degenerate. The wormhole geometry is regular everywhere and connects two Lifshitz spacetimes with a nontrivial geometry at the boundary. The dynamical exponent z is determined by the quotient of the curvature radii of the maximally symmetric vacua according to n(z^2-1)+1=(l/L)^2, where L corresponds to the curvature radius of the nondegenerate vacuum. Lig…
We study the gravity dual of a Lifshitz field theory in the context of a RSII brane-world scenario, taking into account the effects of the extra dimension through the contribution of the electric part of the Weyl tensor. We study the thermodynamical behavior of such asymptotically Lifshitz black holes. It is shown that the entropy imposes the critical exponent $z$ to be bounded from above. This maximum value of $z$ corresponds to a positive infinite entropy as long as the temperature is kept positive. The stability and phase transition for different spatial topologies are also discussed.
We investigate black brane solutions in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime in 3+1-dimensional Horndeski gravity, which admit a critical exponent fixed at $z=1/2$. The cosmological constant depends on $z$ as $Λ=-(1+2z)/L^{2}$. We compute the shear viscosity in the 2+1-dimensional dual boundary field theory via holographic correspondence. We investigate the violation of the bound for viscosity to entropy density ratio of $η/s\geq1/(4π)$ at $z=1/2$.
We give a definition of asymptotically locally Lifshitz spacetimes, with boundary data appropriate for a non-relativistic theory on the boundary. Solutions satisfying these boundary conditions are constructed in an asymptotic expansion. We identify the boundary data with sources for dual field theory operators, and give a prescription for calculating the one-point functions of the field theory operators (including the stress tensor) in the presence of arbitrary sources. The divergences in these one-point functions can be cancelled by holographic renormalization, adding counterterms which are l…
In this note we construct asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes in the Chern-Simons formulation of three dimensional higher spin gravity and relate the resulting theories to integrable systems which are elements of the KdV hierarchy.
We present an overview of the construction of the general holographic dictionary for asymptotically locally Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds with arbitrary dynamical exponents $z$ and $θ$, compatible with the null energy condition, which was recently developed in [1,2]. A concrete definition of asymptotically locally Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds is provided in the context of a generic bottom-up Einstein-Proca-Dilaton theory, and a systematic procedure for solving the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation via a covariant expansion in eigenfunctions …
We calculate the one-loop effective potential for Horava-Lifshitz-like QED and Yukawa-like theory for arbitrary values of the critical exponent and the space-time dimension.
We study the Hawking radiation of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes in the infrared modified Horava-Lifshitz gravity by applying the methods of covariant anomaly cancellation and effective action, as well as the approach of Damour-Ruffini-Sannan's. These black holes behave as the usual Schwarzschild ones of the general relativity when the radial distance is very large. We also extend the method of covariant anomaly cancellation to derive the Hawking temperature of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically AdS black holes that represent the analogues of the Schwarzschil…
We analytically describe the properties of the s-wave holographic superconductor with the Exponential nonlinear electrodynamics in the Lifshitz black hole background in four-dimensions. Employing an assumption the scalar and gauge fields backreact on the background geometry, we calculate the critical temperature as well as the condensation operator. Based on Sturm-Liouville method, we show that the critical temperature decreases with increasing exponential nonlinear electrodynamics and Lifshitz dynamical exponent, z, indicating that condensation becomes difficult. Also we find that the effects…
We extend our earlier study of special double limits of `boosted' $AdS_5$ black hole solutions to include all black D$p$-branes of type II strings. We find that Lifshitz solutions can be obtained in generality, with varied dynamical exponents, by employing these limits. We then study such double limits for `boosted' D$p$-brane bubble solutions and find that the resulting non-relativistic solutions instead describe Schrödinger like spacetimes, having varied dynamical exponents. We get a simple map between these Lifshitz & Schrödinger solutions and a relationship between two types of dynamical e…
We study asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes and the constraints on flows between Lifshitz fixed points imposed by the null energy condition. In contrast with the relativistic holographic c-theorem, where the effective AdS radius, L, is monotonically decreasing in the IR, for Lifshitz backgrounds we find that both L and z may flow in either direction. We demonstrate this with several numerical examples in a phenomenological model with a massive gauge field coupled to a real scalar.
In order to allow the asymptotically flat, we consider Hořava-Lifshitz gravity theory with a soft violation of the detailed balance condition and obtain various solutions. In particular, we find that such theory coupled to a global monopole leads to a solution representing a space with deficit solid angle, which is well matched with genuine feature of GR.
We consider a class of spherically symmetric spacetime to obtain some interesting solutions in F(R) gravity without matter field (pure gravity). We investigate the geometry of the solutions and find that there is an essential singularity at the origin. In addition, we show that there is an analogy between obtained solutions with the black holes of Einstein-Lambda -power-Maxwell-invariant theory. Furthermore, we find that these solutions are equivalent to the asymptotically Lifshitz black holes. Also, we calculate d^2F/dR^2 to examine the Dolgov-Kawasaki stability criterion.
We study black hole solutions in extended gravities with higher-order curvature terms, including conformal and Einstein-Weyl gravities. In addition to the usual AdS vacuum, the theories admit Lifshitz and Schrödinger vacua. The AdS black hole in conformal gravity contains an additional parameter over and above the mass, which may be interpreted as a massive spin-2 hair. By considering the first law of thermodynamics, we find that it is necessary to introduce an associated additional intensive/extensive pair of thermodynamic quantities. We also obtain new Liftshitz black holes in conformal grav…
Lifshitz space-times with critical exponent z=2 can be obtained by dimensional reduction of Schroedinger space-times with critical exponent z=0. The latter space-times are asymptotically AdS solutions of AdS gravity coupled to an axion-dilaton system and can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB supergravity. This basic observation is used to perform holographic renormalization for 4-dimensional asymptotically z=2 locally Lifshitz space-times by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction of the corresponding problem of holographic renormalization for 5-dimensional asymptotically locally AdS space-tim…
In this paper we consider the structure of the $AdS_3$ vacua in $R^3$ expansion of the New Massive Gravity ($R^3$-NMG). We obtain the degeneracies of the $AdS_3$ vacua at several points of the parametric space. Additionally, following a specific analysis we show that $AdS_3$ wave solutions are present. Using these wave solutions, we single out two special points of the parametric space for which logarithmic terms appear in the solutions. The first one is a point at which the effective mass of the wave profile which is interpreted as a scalar mode, completely saturates the Breitenlohner-Freedma…
Field theories with anisotropic scaling in 1+1 dimensions are considered. It is shown that the isomorphism between Lifshitz algebras with dynamical exponents z and 1/z naturally leads to a duality between low and high temperature regimes. Assuming the existence of gap in the spectrum, this duality allows to obtain a precise formula for the asymptotic growth of the number of states with a fixed energy which depends on z and the energy of the ground state, and reduces to the Cardy formula for z=1. The holographic realization of the duality can be naturally inferred from the fact that Euclidean L…
We study asymptotically Lifshitz solutions to three dimensional higher spin gravity in the SL(3,R)xSL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation. We begin by specifying the most general connections satisfying Lifshitz boundary conditions, and we verify that their algebra of symmetries contains a Lifshitz sub-algebra. We then exhibit connections that can be viewed as higher spin Lifshitz black holes. We show that when suitable holonomy conditions are imposed, these black holes obey sensible thermodynamics and possess a gauge in which the corresponding metric exhibits a regular horizon.
A variational formulation is given for a theory of gravity coupled to a massive vector in four dimensions, with Asymptotically Lifshitz boundary conditions on the fields. For theories with critical exponent z=2 we obtain a well-defined variational principle by explicitly constructing two actions with local boundary counterterms. As part of our analysis we obtain solutions of these theories on a neighborhood of spatial infinity, study the asymptotic symmetries, and consider different definitions of the boundary stress tensor and associated charges. A constraint on the boundary data for the fiel…
There has been significant interest in the last several years in studying possible gravitational duals, known as Lifshitz spacetimes, to anisotropically scaling field theories by adding matter to distort the asymptotics of an AdS spacetime. We point out that putative ground state for the most heavily studied example of such a spacetime, that with a flat spatial section, suffers from a naked singularity and further point out this singularity is not resolvable by any known stringy effect. We review the reasons one might worry that asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes are unstable and employ the in…
Holographic relationships between entanglement entropy on the boundary of a spacetime and the area of minimal surfaces in the bulk provide an important entry in the bulk/boundary dictionary. While constructing the necessary causal and entanglement wedges is well understood in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, less is known about the equivalent constructions in spacetimes with different asymptotics. In particular, recent attempts to construct entanglement and causal wedges for asymptotically Lifshitz solutions in relativistic gravitational theories have proven problematic. We note a simple observa…
We construct the general O(N)-symmetric non-linear sigma model in 2+1 spacetime dimensions at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z=2. For a particular choice of the free parameters, the model is asymptotically free with the beta function coinciding to the one for the conventional sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. In this case, the model admits also a simple description in terms of adjoint currents.
A Lifshitz black brane at generic dynamical critical exponent $z > 1$, with non-zero linear momentum along the boundary, provides a holographic dual description of a non-equilibrium steady state in a quantum critical fluid, with Lifshitz scale invariance but without boost symmetry. We consider moving Lifshitz branes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity and obtain the non-relativistic stress tensor complex of the dual field theory via a suitable holographic renormalisation procedure. The resulting black brane hydrodynamics and thermodynamics are a concrete holographic realization of a Lifshitz p…
We study the DC conductivity and the diffusion constant for asymptotically Lifshitz black branes in $(d+2)$- dimensions with arbitrary dynamical exponent $z$. For a solvable example with $z=2, d=4$, we calculate the real-time correlation functions, from which we can read off the corresponding conductivity and diffusion constant. For black branes with arbitrary $z$ and $d$, we work out the conductivity and obtain the diffusion constant by making use of the Einstein relation. All the results agree with those obtained via the membrane paradigm.
Considering the cubic theory of gravity which has been constructed in \cite{myers}, we study the existence of Lifshitz and hyper scaling violating Lifshitz solutions. We firstly extend the black hole solution of \cite{myers} and find that such extended solutions are valid for any value of dynamical exponent $z$. Next, we examine the existence of the AdS black hole solution with non-zero hyperscaling-violating exponent $θ$ and general dynamical exponent $z$. We find that the solutions do exist only for $θ=0,3$ in 4 dimension and $θ=0,4$ in 5 dimension. In particular, when $θ=3(4)$ in $4(5)$ dim…
As a continuation of a previous work, here we examine the admittance of Birkhoff's theorem in a class of higher derivative theories of gravity. This class is contained in a larger class of theories which are characterized by the property that the trace of the field equations are of second order in the metric. The action representing these theories are given by a sum of higher curvature terms. Moreover the terms of a fixed order k in the curvature are constructed by taking a complete contraction of k conformal tensors. The general spherically (hyperbolic or plane) symmetric solution is then giv…
We obtain exact solutions of charged asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in arbitrary (d+2) dimensions, generalizing the four dimensional solution investigated in 0908.2611[hep-th]. We find that both the conventional Hamiltonian approach and the recently proposed method for defining mass in non-relativistic backgrounds do not work for this specific example. Thus the mass of the black hole can only be determined by the first law of thermodynamics. We also obtain perturbative solutions in five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density and the DC conducti…
Black holes with asymptotic anisotropic scaling are conjectured to be gravity duals of condensed matter system close to quantum critical points with non-trivial dynamical exponent z at finite temperature. A holographic renormalization procedure is presented that allows thermodynamic potentials to be defined for objects with both electric and magnetic charge in such a way that standard thermodynamic relations hold. Black holes in asymptotic Lifshitz spacetimes can exhibit paramagnetic behavior at low temperature limit for certain values of the critical exponent z, whereas the behavior of AdS bl…
We generalize the four-dimensional R^2-corrected z=3/2 Lifshitz black hole to a two-parameter family of black hole solutions for any dynamical exponent z and for any dimension D. For a particular relation between the parameters, we find the first example of an extremal Lifshitz black hole. An asymptotically Lifshitz black hole with a logarithmic decay is also exhibited for a specific critical exponent depending on the dimension. We extend this analysis to the more general quadratic curvature corrections for which we present three new families of higher-dimensional D>=5 analytic Lifshitz black …
In this paper, we construct a new class of topological black hole Lifshitz solutions in the presence of nonlinear exponential electrodynamics for Einstein-dilaton gravity. We show that the reality of Lifshitz supporting Maxwell matter fields exclude the negative horizon curvature solutions except for the asymptotic AdS case. Calculating the conserved and thermodynamical quantities, we obtain a Smarr type formula for the mass and confirm that thermodynamics first law is satisfied on the black hole horizon. Afterward, we study the thermal stability of our solutions and figure out the effects of …
We introduce the Callan-Symanzik method in the description of anisotropic as well as isotropic Lifshitz critical behaviors. Renormalized perturbation theories are defined by normalization conditions with nonvanishing masses and at zero external momenta. The orthogonal approximation is employed to obtain the critical indices $η_{L2}$, $ν_{L2}$, $η_{L4}$ and $ν_{L4}$ diagramatically at least up to two-loop order in the anisotropic criticalities. This approximation is also utilized to compute the exponents $η_{L4}$ and $ν_{L4}$ in the isotropic case. Furthermore, we compute those exponents exactl…
We investigate the effects of Lifshitz dynamical critical exponent z on a family of minimal D=4+1 holographic superconducting models, with a particular focus on magnetic phenomena. We see that it is possible to have a consistent Ginzburg-Landau approach to holographic superconductivity in a Lifshitz background. By following this phenomenological approach we are able to compute a wide array of physical quantities. We also calculate the Ginzburg-Landau parameter for different condensates, and conclude that in systems with higher dynamical critical exponent, vortex formation is more strongly unfa…
We explore string/M-theory constructions of holographic theories with Lifshitz scaling exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$, finding a range of $z,θ$-values. Some of these arise as effective metrics from dimensional reduction of certain kinds of null deformations of $AdS$ spacetimes appearing in the near horizon geometries of extremal D3-, M2- and M5-brane theories. The $AdS_5$ solution in particular gives rise to $θ=1$ in $d=2$ (boundary) space dimensions. Other solutions arise as the IIA D2- and D4-brane solutions with appropriate null deformations, and we discuss the phase s…
We analyse the power counting renormalizability of scalar theory in Lifshitz spacetime in D+2 dimensions. We show the spectral dimension becomes 2+(D/z) (z is the critical exponent) after integrating out the radion field. We comment on the AdS/CFT correspondence, and on how to avoid the Lifshitz singularity by flowing into AdS spacetime in the infrared. We also comment on the quantum gravity in Lifshitz spacetime.
Motivated by recent logarithmic entropy of Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity, we investigate Hawking radiation for Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole from tunneling perspective. After considering the effect of self-gravitation, we calculate the emission rate and entropy of quantum tunneling by using Kraus-Parikh-Wilczek method. Meanwhile, both massless and massive particles are considered in this letter. Interestingly, two types tunneling particles have the same emission rate $Γ$ and entropy $S_b$ whose analytical formulae are $Γ= \exp{[π(r_{in}^2 - r_{out}^2t)/2 + π/α\ln r_{in}/r_{out}]}$ and $S_b =…
Taking as a probe an SU(2) gauge field with Yang-Mills action in a 3+1 dimensional Lifshitz black hole background, we use the gauge/gravity correspondence to discuss finite temperature effects in the dual theory defined on the boundary. In order to test the dependence of results on the anisotropic scaling exponent z we consider two analytical black hole solutions with z=2 and z=4. Apart from solving the equations of motion in the bulk using a numerical approach, we also apply an analytical approximation allowing the determination of the phase transition character, the critical exponent and the…
By imposing the weighted renormalization condition and the (super)symmetry requirements, we construct a Lifshitz-like extension of the three-dimensional Wess-Zumino model, with dynamical critical exponent z=2. In this context, the auxiliary field F plays a key role by introducing the appropriate Lifshitz operator in the bosonic sector of the theory, avoiding so undesirable time-space mixing derivatives and inconsistencies concerning the critical z exponent, as reported in the literature. The consistency of the proposed model is verified by building explicitly the susy algebra through the Noeth…
We show that three-dimensional massive gravity admits Lifshitz metrics with generic values of the dynamical exponent z as exact solutions. At the point z=3, exact black hole solutions which are asymptotically Lifshitz arise. These spacetimes are three-dimensional analogues of those that were recently proposed as gravity duals for scale invariant fixed points.
We study the Lifshitz type extension of the standard model (SM) at UV, with dynamical critical exponent z=3. One loop radiative corrections to the Higgs mass in such a model is calculated. Our result shows that, the Hierarchy problem, which has initiated many excellent extension of the minimal SM, can be weakened in the z=3 Lifshitz type quantum field theory.
We show that a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type four-fermion coupling at the z=3 Lifshitz-like fixed point in 3+1 dimensions is asymptotically free and generates a mass scale dynamically. This result is nonperturbative in the limit of a large number of fermion species. The theory is ultra-violet complete and at low energies exhibits Lorentz invariance as an emergent spacetime symmetry. Many of our results generalize to z=d in odd d spatial dimensions; z=d=1 corresponds to the Gross-Neveu model. The above mechanism of mass generation has potential applications to the fermion mass problem and to dynamica…
Charged Lifshitz black holes for the Einstein-Proca-Maxwell system with a negative cosmological constant in arbitrary dimension $D$ are known only if the dynamical critical exponent is fixed as $z=2(D-2)$. In the present work, we show that these configurations can be extended to much more general charged black holes which in addition exist for any value of the dynamical exponent $z>1$ by considering a nonlinear electrodynamics instead of the Maxwell theory. More precisely, we introduce a two-parametric nonlinear electrodynamics defined in the more general, but less known, so-called $(\mathcal{…
By computing the Lyapunov exponent, which is the inverse of the instability time scale associated with this geodesic motion we show that there is two region of space which in both of them the equatorial timelike geodesics are stable via Lyapunov measure of stability.
The large-n expansion is applied to the calculation of thermal critical exponents describing the critical behavior of spatially anisotropic d-dimensional systems at m-axial Lifshitz points. We derive the leading nontrivial 1/n correction for the perpendicular correlation-length exponent nu_{L2} and hence several related thermal exponents to order O(1/n). The results are consistent with known large-n expansions for d-dimensional critical points and isotropic Lifshitz points, as well as with the second-order epsilon expansion about the upper critical dimension d^*=4+m/2 for generic m\in[0,d]. An…
We examine the formation and critical dynamics of topological defects via Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical point, which is conjectured to dual to a Lifshitz geometry. Quantized magnetic fluxoids are spontaneously generated and trapped in the cores of order parameter vortices, which is a feature of type II superconductors. Time evolution of the average condensate is found to lag behind the instantaneous equilibrium value of the order parameter, a typical phenomenon in nonequilibrium dynamics. Scalings of vortex number density and the "freeze-out" time match the pre…
Using the Dirac Method, we study the Hamiltonian consistency for three field theories. First we study the electrodynamics a la Hořava and we show that this system is consistent for an arbitrary dynamical exponent $z.$ Second, we study a Lifshitz type electrodynamics, which was proposed in [1]. For this last system we found that the canonical momentum and the electrical field are related through a Proca type Green function, however this system is consistent. In addition, we show that the anisotropic Yang-Mills theory with dynamical exponent $z=2$ is consistent. Finally, we study a generalized a…
