We construct the general O(N)-symmetric non-linear sigma model in 2+1 spacetime dimensions at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z=2. For a particular choice of the free parameters, the model is asymptotically free with the beta function coinciding to the one for the conventional sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. In this case, the model admits also a simple description in terms of adjoint currents.
We define Landau-Lifshitz sigma models on general coset space $G/H$, with $H$ a maximal stability sub-group of $G$. These are non-relativistic models that have $G$-valued Nöther charges, local $H$ invariance and are classically integrable. Using this definition, we construct the $PSU(2,2|4)/PS(U(2|2)^2)$ Landau-Lifshitz sigma-model. This sigma model describes the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain Hamiltonian obtained from the complete one-loop dilatation operator of the N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. In the second part of the paper, we identify a number of consistent truncations of the…
We study the renormalization of an N = 1 supersymmetric Lifshitz sigma model in three dimensions. The sigma model exhibits worldvolume anisotropy in space and time around the high-energy z = 2 Lifshitz point, such that the worldvolume is endowed with a foliation structure along a preferred time direction. In curved backgrounds, the target-space geometry is equipped with two distinct metrics, and the interacting sigma model is power-counting renormalizable. At low energies, the theory naturally flows toward the relativistic sigma model where Lorentz symmetry emerges. In the superspace formalism…
We establish the equivalence between the continuum limit of the quantum spherical model with competing interactions, which is relevant to the investigation of Lifshitz points, and the O(N) nonlinear sigma model with the addition of higher order spatial derivative operators, which breaks the Lorentz symmetry and is known as Lifshitz-type (or anisotropic) nonlinear sigma model. In the context of the 1/N expansion, we also discuss the renormalization properties of this nonlinear sigma model and find the nontrivial fixed points of the beta-functions in various dimensions, which turn out to be conn…
This work is dedicated to the study of both large-$N$ and perturbative quantum behaviors of Lifshitz nonlinear sigma models with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ in 2+1 dimensions. We discuss renormalization and renormalization group aspects with emphasis on the possibility of emergence of Lorentz invariance at low energies. Contrarily to the perturbative expansion, where in general the Lorentz symmetry restoration is delicate and may depend on stringent fine-tuning, our results provide a more favorable scenario in the large-$N$ framework. We also consider supersymmetric extension in this non…
Classical strings propagating in $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}\times T^{4}$ supported with Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux are described by a Wess-Zumino-Witten model. In this note, we study the emergence of their semiclassical $SU(2)$ spectrally flowed sectors as the Landau-Lifshitz limit of the underlying quantum spin chain. We consider the propagator in the coherent state picture, and find that the time interval is discretized proportionally to the lattice spacing. In the Landau-Lifshitz limit, where both time and space become continuous, we derive a path integral representation of the propagator f…
We use the Wetterich equation for foliated spacetimes to study the RG flow of projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity coupled to n Lifshitz scalars. Using novel results for anisotropic heat kernels, the matter-induced beta functions for the gravitational couplings are computed explicitly. The RG flow exhibits an UV attractive anisotropic Gaussian fixed point where Newton's constant vanishes and the extra scalar mode decouples. This fixed point ensures that the theory is asymptotically free in the large-n expansion, indicating that projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity is perturbatively renormalizabl…
We consider bosonic subsectors of the q-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring action and study the classical integrable structure of anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz sigma models (LLSMs) derived by taking fast-moving limits. The subsectors are 1) deformed AdS_3 x S^1 and 2) R x deformed S^3. The cases 1) and 2) lead to a time-like warped SL(2) LLSM and a squashed S^3 LLSM, respectively. For each of them, we construct an infinite number of non-local conserved charges and show a quantum affine algebra at the classical level. Furthermore, a pp-wave like limit is applied for the case 1). The resulting syste…
We investigate the linear cosmological perturbations of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in a FRW universe without any matter. Our results show that a new gauge invariant dynamical scalar mode emerges, due to the gauge transformation under the "foliation-preserving" diffeomorphism and "projectability condition", and it can produce a scale invariant power spectrum. In the infrared regime with $λ=1$, the dynamical scalar degree of freedom turns to be a non-dynamical one at the linear order level.
We consider the anisotropic gravity-gauge vector coupling in the non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz theory at the kinetic conformal point, in the low energy regime. We show that the canonical formulation of the theory, evaluated at its constraints, reduces to a canonical formulation solely in terms of the physical degrees of freedom. The corresponding reduced Hamilton defines the ADM energy of the system. We obtain its explicit expression and discuss its relation to the ADM energy of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We then show that there exists, in this theory, a well--defined wave zone. In it, the…
BPS instantons are discussed in Lifshitz-type anisotropic field theories. We consider generalizations of the sigma model/Yang-Mills instantons in renormalizable higher dimensional models with the classical Lifshitz scaling invariance. In each model, BPS instanton equation takes the form of the gradient flow equations for "the superpotential" defining "the detailed balance condition". The anisotropic Weyl rescaling and the coset space dimensional reduction are used to map rotationally symmetric instantons to vortices in two-dimensional anisotropic systems on the hyperbolic plane. As examples, w…
We present two-dimensional gauged Lifshitz scalar field theories by considering the duality relation between the source current and the Noether current. Requiring the duality partially, we obtain a gauged model which recovers the bosonized Schwinger model for the IR limit. For the exact duality, however, the source current is not conserved, which means that the resulting theory is anomalous, so that the number of degrees of freedom is increased. The second model is consistently formulated by adding the Wess-Zumino type action to maintain the gauge invariance.
We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of non-relativistic covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity in the formulation presented recently in arXiv:1009.4885. We argue that the resulting Hamiltonian structure is in agreement with the original construction of non-relativistic covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity presented in arXiv:1007.2410. Then we extend this construction to the case of RFDiff invariant Hořava-Lifshitz theory. We find well behaved Hamiltonian system with the number of the first and the second class constraints that ensure the correct number of physical degrees of freedom of gravity.
The 7--particle form factors of the fundamental spin field of the O(3) nonlinear $σ$--model are constructed. We calculate the corresponding contribution to the spin--spin correlation function, and compare with predictions from the spectral density scaling hypothesis. The resulting approximation to the spin--spin correlation function agrees well with that computed in renormalized (asymptotically free) perturbation theory in the expected energy range. Further we observe simple lower and upper bounds for the sum of the absolute square of the form factors which may be of use for analytic estimates…
We show that in the Hořava-Lifshitz theory at the kinetic-conformal point, in the low energy regime, a wave zone for asymptotically flat fields can be consistently defined. In it, the physical degrees of freedom, the transverse traceless tensorial modes, satisfy a linear wave equation. The Newtonian contributions, among which there are terms which manifestly break the relativistic invariance, are non-trivial but do not obstruct the free propagation (radiation) of the physical degrees of freedom. For an appropriate value of the couplings of the theory, the wave equation becomes the relativistic…
We investigate the linear cosmological perturbations in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with a scalar field. Starting from the most general expressions of the metric perturbations as well as that of a canonical scalar field, we decompose the scalar, vector and tensor parts of the perturbed action. By reducing the Hamiltonian, we find that there are two independent degrees of freedom for the tensor perturbations while none for the vector perturbations. For the scalar perturbations, the remaining number of degrees of freedom, which are all gauge invariant, depends on whether the projectable condition is…
We consider Horava-Lifshitz gravity in both 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. These lower-dimensional versions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity are simple enough to be explicitly tractable, but still complex enough to be interesting. We write the most general (non-projectable) action for each case and discuss the resulting dynamics. In the 1+1 case we utilize the equivalence with 2-dimensional Einstein-aether theory to argue that, even though non-trivial, the theory does not have any local degrees of freedom. In the 2+1 case we show that the only dynamical degree of freedom is a scalar, which qualitatively ha…
We discuss a new covariant scalar-tensor system aimed to realise Hořava proposal for a power-counting renormalizable theory of gravity, with the special feature of not propagating scalar degrees of freedom in an appropriate gauge. The theory is characterized by a new symmetry acting on the metric, that can protect the particular form of its interactions. The set-up spontaneously breaks Lorentz symmetry by means of a time-like scalar field profile. By selecting a unitary gauge for the scalar, we show that this theory describes the dynamics of a spin two degree of freedom, whose equations of mot…
We study linear cosmological perturbations in the ``healthy extension'' of Horava-Lifshitz gravity which has recently been analyzed \cite{BPS2}. We find that there are two degrees of freedom for scalar metric fluctuations, but that one of them decouples in the infrared limit. Also, for appropriate choices of the parameters defining the Lagrangian, the extra mode can be made well-behaved even in the ultraviolet.
We present a one loop calculation in the context of Horava-Lifshitz gravity. Due to the complexity of the calculation in the full theory we focus here on the study of a toy model, namely the conformal reduction of the z=2 projectable theory in 2+1 dimensions. For this value of the dimension there are no gravitons, hence the conformal mode is the only physical degree of freedom, and thus we expect our toy model to lead to qualitatively correct answers regarding the perturbative renormalization of the full theory. We find that Newton's constant (dimensionless in Horava-Lifshitz gravity) is asymp…
We obtain novel factorization identities for non-linear sigma model amplitudes using a new integrand in the CHY double-cover prescription. We find that it is possible write very compact relations using only longitudinal degrees of freedom. We discuss implications for on-shell recursion.
We introduce the electromagnetic-gravitational coupling in the Hořava-Lifshitz framework, in $3+1$ dimensions, by considering the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity theory in $4+1$ dimensions at the kinetic conformal point and then performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction to $3+1$ dimensions. The action of the theory is second order in time derivatives and the potential contains only higher order spacelike derivatives up to $z=4$, $z$ being the critical exponent. These terms include also higher order derivative terms of the electromagnetic field. The propagating degrees of freedom of the theory are exactly th…
An anisotropic model describing gravity--vector gauge coupling at all energy scales is presented. The starting point is the 4+1 dimensional non--projectable Hořava--Lifshitz gravity theory subject to a geometrical restriction. Renormalizability arguments require all possible interactions in the potential up to terms with $z=4$ spatial derivatives on the geometrical tensor fields: the Riemann and Weyl tensors. The latter being necessary on a 4+1 dimensional formulation. The dimensional reduction to 3+1 dimensions give rise to a model invariant under {foliation--preserving diffeomorphisms} (FDif…
We analyze the electromagnetic-gravity interaction in a pure Hořava-Lifshitz framework. To do so we formulate the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in $4+1$ dimensions and perform a Kaluza-Klein reduction to $3+1$ dimensions. We use this reduction as a mathematical procedure to obtain the $3+1$ coupled theory, which at the end is considered as a fundamental, self-consistent, theory. The critical value of the dimensionless coupling constant in the kinetic term of the action is $λ=1/4$. It is the kinetic conformal point for the non-relativistic electromagnetic-gravity interaction. In distinction, the corr…
Point-like Liouville integrable dynamical defects are introduced in the context of the Landau-Lifshitz and Principal Chiral (Faddeev-Reshetikhin) models. Based primarily on the underlying quadratic algebra we identify the first local integrals of motion, the associated Lax pairs as well as the relevant sewing conditions around the defect point. The involution of the integrals of motion is shown taking into account the sewing conditions.
We consider two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model from the viewpoint of the holography, which has been applied to the study of the Yang-Mills theory, based on the non-critical string theory. We can see the renormalization group flows for both the nonlinear sigma model and the Yang-Mills theory at the same time, and the two theories are intimately related through a kind of dual relation of the coupling constants. We address the running behaviors of these coupling constants and also the asymptotic freedom of the Yang-Mills theory.
Renormalization group methods are used to determine the evolution of the low energy Wilson effective action for supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions. For the case of supersymmetric $CP^{(N-1)}$ models, the Kähler potential is determined exactly and is shown to exhibit a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point in addition to a trivial infrared fixed point. The strong coupling behavior of the theory suggests the possible existence of additional relevant operators or nonperturbative degrees of freedom.
The Horava-Lifshitz gravity, having broken the symmetry of space and time, includes three objects: the spatial metric $g_{ij}$, the lapse variable $N$, and the shift variable $N_{i}$. Each of these objects have their own scaling dimensions. The action of the theory is required to be invariant under this scaling, and spatial diffeomorphism, and the temporal foliation symmetry. Noting that action can non-trivially depend on the lapse variable, we suggest to consider the Horva's approach to quantum gravity in higher dimensions such that a set of extra spacial coordinates possess a scaling dimensi…
Starting from the action of $(4,4)$ $2D$ twisted multiplets in the harmonic superspace with a double set of $SU(2)$ harmonic variables, we present its generalization which provides an off-shell description of a wide class of $(4,4)$ sigma models with torsion and non-commuting left and right complex structures. The distinguishing features of the action constructed are: (i) a nonabelian and in general nonlinear gauge invariance ensuring a correct number of physical degrees of freedom; (ii) an infinite tower of auxiliary fields. For a particular class of such models we explicitly demonstrate the …
For the case of the single-O($N$)-vector linear sigma models the critical behaviour following from any $A_k$ singularity in the action is worked out in the double scaling limit $N \rightarrow \infty$, $f_r \rightarrow f_r^c$, $2 \leq r \leq k$. After an exact elimination of Gaussian degrees of freedom, the critical objects such as coupling constants, indices and susceptibility matrix are derived for all $A_k$ and spacetime dimensions $0 \leq D < 4$. There appear exceptional spacetime dimensions where the degree $k$ of the singularity $A_k$ is more strongly constrained than by the renormalizabi…
Motivated by the desire to relate Bethe ansatz equations for anomalous dimensions found on the gauge theory side of the AdS/CFT correspondence to superstring theory on AdS_5 x S5 we explore a connection between the asymptotic S-matrix that enters the Bethe ansatz and an effective two-dimensional quantum field theory. The latter generalizes the standard ``non-relativistic'' Landau-Lifshitz (LL) model describing low-energy modes of ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain and should be related to a limit of superstring effective action. We find the exact form of the quartic interaction terms in the g…
Gravity can be thought as an emergent phenomenon and it has a nice "thermodynamic" structure. In this context, it is then possible to study the thermodynamics without knowing the details of the underlying microscopic degrees of freedom. Here, based on the ordinary thermodynamics, we investigate the phase transition of the static, spherically symmetric charged black hole solution with arbitrary scalar curvature $2k$ in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity at the Lifshitz point $z=3$. The analysis is done using the canonical ensemble frame work; i.e. the charge is kept fixed. We find (a) for both $k=0$ and $…
A class of two-dimensional sigma models interpolating between $CP^1$ and the $SU(2)$ principal chiral model is discussed. We add the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten term and examine the renormalization group flow of the two coupling constants which characterize the model under consideration. The model flows to the $SU(2)$ WZNW conformal field theory in the IR. There is an ordinary phase in which the model flows from the asymptotically free $CP^1$ model coupled to an extra massless degree of freedom in the UV. At higher loop order we discover that there is also a phase in which the model can flow fr…
We show that the massive Yang--Mills action having as a mass term the non-local operator introduced by Gubarov, Stodolsky, and Zakharov is classically equivalent to a principal gauged sigma model. The non-local mass corresponds to the topological term of the sigma model. The latter is obtained once the degrees of freedom implicitly generated in the non-local action are explicitly implemented as group elements. The non-local action is recovered by integrating out these group elements. In contrast to the usual gauge-fixed treatment, the sigma model point of view provides a safe framework in whic…
Gravitational backgrounds in d+2 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to Lifshitz-like theories describing critical phenomena in d+1 dimensions with critical exponent z\geq 1. We numerically explore a dilaton-Einstein-Maxwell model admitting such backgrounds as solutions. Such backgrounds are characterized by a temperature T and chemical potential μ, and we find how to embed these solutions into AdS for a range of values of z and d. We find no thermal instability going from the (T\llμ) to the (T\ggμ) regimes, regardless of the dimension, and find that the solutions smoothly inter…
In both Yang-Mills theories and sigma models, instantons are endowed with degrees of freedom associated to their scale size and orientation. It has long been conjectured that these degrees of freedom have a dual interpretation as the positions of partonic constituents of the instanton. These conjectures are usually framed in d=3+1 and d=1+1 dimensions respectively where the partons are supposed to be responsible for confinement and other strong coupling phenomena. We revisit this partonic interpretation of instantons in the context of d=4+1 and d=2+1 dimensions. Here the instantons are particl…
We formulate and study a class of massive N=2 supersymmetric gauge field theories coupled to boundary degrees of freedom on the strip. For some values of the parameters, the infrared limits of these theories can be interpreted as open string sigma models describing D-branes in large-radius Calabi-Yau compactifications. For other values of the parameters, these theories flow to CFTs describing branes in more exotic, non-geometric phases of the Calabi-Yau moduli space such as the Landau-Ginzburg orbifold phase. Some simple properties of the branes (like large radius monodromies and spectra of wo…
We present a manifestly supersymmetric off-shell formulation of a wide class of $(4,4)$ $2D$ sigma models with torsion and both commuting and non-commuting left and right complex structures in the harmonic superspace with a double set of $SU(2)$ harmonic variables. The distinguishing features of the relevant superfield action are: (i) in general nonabelian and nonlinear gauge invariance ensuring a correct number of physical degrees of freedom; (ii) an infinite tower of auxiliary fields. This action is derived from the most general one by imposing the integrability condition which follows from …
A proposal for a power-counting renormalizable theory of quantum gravity at a Lifshitz point was recently put forth by Horava (arXiv:0901.3775), and has been since dubbed as Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The theory explicitly breaks Lorentz invariance, which introduces an apparent extra scalar degree of freedom. In this note, we show that the low energy limit of (non-projectible) Horava-Lifshitz gravity is uniquely given by the quadratic cuscuton model: a covariant scalar field theory with an infinite speed of sound and a quadratic potential, which is minimally coupled to Einstein gravity. This imp…
The equivalence between rank-2 anti-symmetric tensor fields, considered as gauge potentials, and torsionless non-linear $σ$-models suggests us to study the possibility of coupling tensorial matter with Yang-Mills fields, through the gauging of the isometries of the target space. We show that this coupling is actually possible; however, the matter appears no longer as an elementary field, but rather as a composite one, expressed in terms of the bosonic degrees of freedom of the $σ$-model. A possible phenomenological application is presented that describes the interactions among vector mesons in…
We derive a local, gauge invariant action for the SU(N) non-linear sigma-model in 2+1 dimensions. In this setting, the model is defined in terms of a self-interacting pseudo vector-field θ_μ, with values in the Lie algebra of the group SU(N). Thanks to a non-trivially realized gauge invariance, the model has the correct number of degrees of freedom: only one polarization of θ_μ, like in the case of the familiar Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions. Moreover, since θ_μis a pseudo-vector, the physical content corresponds to one massless pseudo-scalar field in the Lie algebra of SU(N), as in the s…
It is known that there exist an infinite number of inequivalent quantizations on a topologically nontrivial manifold even if it is a finite-dimensional manifold. In this paper we consider the abelian sigma model in (1+1) dimensions to explore a system having infinite degrees of freedom. The model has a field variable $ ϕ: S^1 \to S^1 $. An algebra of the quantum field is defined respecting the topological aspect of this model. A central extension of the algebra is also introduced. It is shown that there exist an infinite number of unitary inequivalent representations, which are characterized b…
Two-dimensional field theories do not have a moduli space of vacua. Instead, it is common that their low-energy behavior is a sigma model with a target space. When this target space is compact its renormalization group flow is standard. When it is non-compact the continuous spectrum of operators can change the qualitative behavior. Here we discuss two-dimensional gauge theories with N=(2,2) supersymmetry. We focus on two specific theories, for which we argue that they flow to free chiral multiplets at low energies: the U(1) gauge theory with one flavor (two chiral superfields with charges plus…
We show that the Horava theory for the completion of General Relativity at UV scales can be interpreted as a gauge fixed theory, and it can be extended to an invariant theory under the full group of four-dimensional diffeomorphisms. In this respect, although being fully relativistic, it results to be locally anisotropic in the time-like and space-like directions defined by a family of irrotational observers. We show that this theory propagates generically three degrees of freedom: two of them are related to the four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariant graviton (the metric) and one is related …
We describe a class of supersymmetric gauged linear sigma-model, whose target space is the infinite dimensional space of bundles on a Calabi-Yau 3- or 2-fold. This target space can be considered the configuration space of D-branes wrapped around the Calabi-Yau. We propose that this model can be used to define matrix string theory compactifications. In the infrared limit the model flows to a superconformal non-linear sigma-model whose target space is the moduli space of BPS configurations of branes on the compact space, containing the moduli space of semi-stable bundles. We argue that the bulk …
Field theory with instantons can be partially regularized by adding degrees of freedom at some scale. These extra degrees of freedom lead to the appearence of the new topological defects. These defects which we call freckles have some characteristic size depending on the scale at which the extra degrees of freedom revive. The examples of two dimensional sigma model, four dimensional gauge theory are studied. The compactification of the four dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory down to two dimensions is also considered and the new phenomena are found.
We study the canonical structure of the $SU(N)$ non-linear Sigma-model in a polynomial, first-order representation. The fundamental variables in this description are a non-Abelian vector field L_mu and a non-Abelian antisymmetric tensor field theta_{mu nu}, which constrains L_{mu} to be a `pure gauge' (F_{mu nu}(L) = 0) field. The second-class constraints that appear as a consequence of the first-order nature of the Lagrangian are solved, and the reduced phase-space variables explicitly found. We also treat the first-class constraints due to the gauge-invariance under transformations of the an…
We fully investigate the symmetry breaking patterns occurring upon creation of composite non-Abelian strings: vortex strings in non-Abelian theories where different sets of colours have different amounts of flux. After spontaneous symmetry breaking, there remains some internal colour degrees of freedom attached to these objects, which we argue must exist in a Flag manifold, a more general kind of projective space than both $\mathbb{CP}(N)$ and the Grassmannian manifold. These strings are expected to be BPS, since its constituents are. We demonstrate that this is true and construct a low-energy…
In this work we analyze the validity of Lifshitz's theory for the case of non-equilibrium scenarios from a full quantum dynamical approach. We show that Lifshitz's framework for the study of the Casimir pressure is the result of considering the long-time regime (or steady state) of a well-defined fully quantized problem, subjected to initial conditions for the electromagnetic field interacting with real materials. For this, we implement the closed time path formalism developed in previous works to study the case of two half spaces (modeled as composite environments, consisting in quantum degre…
We investigate static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the IR limit of projectable nonrelativistic quantum gravity, including the renormalisable quantum gravity recently proposed by Hořava. It is found that the projectability condition plays an important role. Without the cosmological constant, the spacetime is uniquely given by the Schwarzschild solution. With the cosmological constant, the spacetime is uniquely given by the Kottler (Schwarzschild-(anti) de Sitter) solution for the entirely vacuum spacetime. However, in addition to the Kottler solution, the static spherical and hyper…
Gauged linear sigma models with (0,2) supersymmetry allow a larger choice of couplings than models with (2,2) supersymmetry. We use this freedom to find a fully linear construction of torsional heterotic compactifications, including models with branes. As a non-compact example, we describe a family of metrics which correspond to deformations of the heterotic conifold by turning on H-flux. We then describe compact models which are gauge-invariant only at the quantum level. Our construction gives a generalization of symplectic reduction. The resulting spaces are non-Kahler analogues of familiar …
Asymptotic freedom, lost: Complex conformal field theory in the two-dimensional $O(N>2)$ nonlinear sigma model and its realization in Heisenberg spin chains
We discuss the relationship between the phase diagram of the Q=0 state Potts model, the arboreal gas model, and the supersphere sigma model S^{0,2} = OSP(1/2) / OSP(0/2). We identify the Potts antiferromagnetic critical point with the critical point of the arboreal gas (at negative tree fugacity), and with a critical point of the sigma model. We show that the corresponding conformal theory on the square lattice has a non-linearly realized OSP(2/2) = SL(1/2) symmetry, and involves non-compact degrees of freedom, with a continuous spectrum of critical exponents. The role of global topological pr…

Exact expressions for correlation functions are known for the large-$N$ (planar) limit of the $(1+1)$-dimensional ${\rm SU}(N)\times {\rm SU}(N)$ principal chiral sigma model. These were obtained with the form-factor bootstrap, an entirely nonperturbative method. The large-$N$ solution of this asymptotically-free model is far less trivial than that of O($N$) sigma model (or other isovector models). Here we study the Euclidean two-point correlation function $N^{-1}< {\rm Tr}\,Φ(0)^{\dagger} Φ(x)>$, where $Φ(x)\sim Z^{-1/2}U(x)$ is the scaling field and $U(x)\in SU(N)$ is the bare field. We expr…
We consider SU($N$) Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathbb R}^{2,1}\times S^1$, where $S^1$ is a spatial circle. In the infrared limit of a small-circle radius the Yang-Mills action reduces to the action of a sigma model on ${\mathbb R}^{2,1}$ whose target space is a $2(N{-}1)$-dimensional torus modulo the Weyl-group action. We argue that there is freedom in the choice of the framing of the gauge bundles, which leads to more general options. In particular, we show that this low-energy limit can give rise to a target space SU$(N){\times}$SU$(N)/{\mathbb Z}_N$. The latter is the direct product of SU($N$…
Conventional lattice formulations of $θ$ vacua in the $1+1$-dimensional $\text{O}(3)$ nonlinear sigma model suffer from a sign problem. Here, we construct the first sign-problem-free regularization for arbitrary $θ$. Using efficient lattice Monte Carlo algorithms, we demonstrate how a Hamiltonian model of spin-$\tfrac12$ degrees of freedom on a 2-dimensional spatial lattice reproduces both the infrared sector for arbitrary $θ$, as well as the ultraviolet physics of asymptotic freedom. Furthermore, as a model of qubits on a two-dimensional square lattice with only nearest-neighbor interactions,…
We show that the superconformal symmetries of the (1,1) sigma model decompose into a set of more refined symmetries when the target space admits projectors $P_{\pm}$, and the orthogonal complements $Q_{\pm}$, covariantly constant with respect to the two natural torsionful connections $\nabla^{(\pm)}$ that arise in the sigma model. Surprisingly the new symmetries still close to form copies of the superconformal algebra, even when the projectors are not integrable, so one is able to define a superconformal theory not associated with a particular geometry, but rather with non-integrable projector…
We provide strong evidence that the asymptotically free (1+1)-dimensional non-linear O(3) sigma model can be regularized using a quantum lattice Hamiltonian, referred to as the "Heisenberg-comb", that acts on a Hilbert space with only two qubits per spatial lattice site. The Heisenberg-comb consists of a spin-half anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg-chain coupled anti-ferromagnetically to a second local spin-half particle at every lattice site. Using a world-line Monte Carlo method we show that the model reproduces the universal step-scaling function of the traditional model up to correlation length…
