An anisotropic model describing gravity--vector gauge coupling at all energy scales is presented. The starting point is the 4+1 dimensional non--projectable Hořava--Lifshitz gravity theory subject to a geometrical restriction. Renormalizability arguments require all possible interactions in the potential up to terms with $z=4$ spatial derivatives on the geometrical tensor fields: the Riemann and Weyl tensors. The latter being necessary on a 4+1 dimensional formulation. The dimensional reduction to 3+1 dimensions give rise to a model invariant under {foliation--preserving diffeomorphisms} (FDiff) and $U(1)$ symmetry groups. The reduced theory on the {kinetic conformal} (KC) point ($λ=1/3$), propagates the same spectrum of the Einstein--Maxwell theory. Moreover, at low energies, on the IR point $α=0$, $β=1$, its field equations are exactly the Einstein--Maxwell ones in a particular gauge condition. The Minkowski ground state is stable provided several restrictions on the coupling parameters are satisfied, they are explicitly obtained. The quantum propagators of the physical degrees of freedom are obtained and after an analysis of the first and second class constraints the renormalizability by power counting is proved, provided that the aforementioned restrictions on the coupling parameters are satisfied.
We fermionize the two-dimensional free Lifshitz scalar field in order to identify what the gauge covariant couplings are, and then they are bosonized back to get the gauged Lifshitz scalar field theories. We show that they give the same physical modes with those of the corresponding Lorentz invariant gauged scalar theories, although the dispersion relations are different.
We calculate the one-loop effective potential for Horava-Lifshitz-like QED with an arbitrary critical exponent within different approaches and discuss its gauge dependence.
Lagrangian gauge theories with a z=2 Lifshitz scaling provide a family of interacting, asymptotically free five-dimensional field theories. We examine some of their quantum properties, extending previous results to include matter. We present no-go theorems that, in the absence of constraints, such theories cannot admit a spinorial supersymmetry or a boost symmetry. However, we argue that there exist renormalization group flows whose fixed points can admit supersymmetry and boosts, i.e. super-Schrodinger symmetry. We also present examples of Lifshitz gauge theories with a scalar supersymmetry.
We present two-dimensional gauged Lifshitz scalar field theories by considering the duality relation between the source current and the Noether current. Requiring the duality partially, we obtain a gauged model which recovers the bosonized Schwinger model for the IR limit. For the exact duality, however, the source current is not conserved, which means that the resulting theory is anomalous, so that the number of degrees of freedom is increased. The second model is consistently formulated by adding the Wess-Zumino type action to maintain the gauge invariance.
We consider the four-fermion Lifshitz model, introduce in this model an auxiliary vector field, and generate an effective dynamics for this field. We explicitly demonstrate that within this dynamics, the effective bumblebee potential for the vector field naturally arises as a one-loop correction and allows for the dynamical breaking of the rotational symmetry.
We discuss two classes of non-supersymmetric interpolating solutions in N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity, that flow from either a z=2 Lifshitz geometry or a conformal AdS background to the near-horizon geometry of a Nernst brane. We obtain these solutions by constructing a z=2 supersymmetric Lifshitz solution in the STU model from a first-order rewriting of the action, then lifting it up to a five-dimensional background and subsequently modifying this five-dimensional solution by a two-parameter family of deformations. Under reduction, these give four-dimensional non-supersymmetric Nernst brane so…
We propose candidate gravity duals for a class of non-Abelian z=2 Lifshitz Chern-Simons (LCS) gauge theories studied by Mulligan, Kachru and Nayak. These are nonrelativistic gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions in which parity and time-reversal symmetries are explicitly broken by the presence of a Chern-Simons term. We show that these field theories can be realized as deformations of DLCQ N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Using the holographic dictionary, we identify the bulk fields that are dual to these deformations. The geometries describing the groundstates of the non-Abelian LCS gauge theories rea…
We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero and finite temperature in field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling, with critical exponent $z=2$, including both scalar and gauge fields. Depending on the relative strength of the coupling constants for the gauge and scalar interactions, we find that there is a symmetry breaking term induced at one-loop at zero temperature and we find symmetry restoration through a first-order phase transition at high temperature.
Within the superfield approach, we formulate two different extensions of the Wess-Zumino model and super-QED with Horava-Lifshitz-like additive terms, discuss their quantum properties and calculate lower contributions to the effective action. In the case of the gauge theory, the one-loop effective potential turns out to be gauge independent.
We consider the anisotropic gravity-gauge vector coupling in the non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz theory at the kinetic conformal point, in the low energy regime. We show that the canonical formulation of the theory, evaluated at its constraints, reduces to a canonical formulation solely in terms of the physical degrees of freedom. The corresponding reduced Hamilton defines the ADM energy of the system. We obtain its explicit expression and discuss its relation to the ADM energy of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We then show that there exists, in this theory, a well--defined wave zone. In it, the…
We propose a new grand unification scenario for ensuring proton stability. Our scenario is based on the idea that the proton decay problem is an artificial one, which is caused from the identification of the gauge coupling unification scale with the grand unification scale or the grand unified symmetry breaking scale. We discuss a Lifshitz type gauge theory as a candidate to realize our scenario.
We study the one-loop two point functions of the gauge, scalar and spinor fields for a Horava-Lifshitz-like QED with critical exponent $z=2$. It turns out that, in certain cases, the dynamical restoration of the Lorentz symmetry at low energies can take place. We also analyze the three point vertex function of the gauge and spinor fields and prove that the triangle anomaly identically vanishes in this theory.
We discuss the ultraviolet sector of 3+1 dimensional Lifshitz-type anisotropic higher derivative scalar, fermion and gauge field theories, with anisotropy exponent z=3 and with explicit breaking of Lorentz symmetry. By discarding from the action all momentum dependent vertex operators, which is essential to avoid phenomenologically unacceptable deformations of the light cone, we find that renormalizable scalar self-interaction and Yukawa-like couplings are, in general, asymptotically free. However, the requirement of cancelling momentum dependent vertex operators is incompatible with gauge sym…
In this paper, we construct a new class of topological black hole Lifshitz solutions in the presence of nonlinear exponential electrodynamics for Einstein-dilaton gravity. We show that the reality of Lifshitz supporting Maxwell matter fields exclude the negative horizon curvature solutions except for the asymptotic AdS case. Calculating the conserved and thermodynamical quantities, we obtain a Smarr type formula for the mass and confirm that thermodynamics first law is satisfied on the black hole horizon. Afterward, we study the thermal stability of our solutions and figure out the effects of …
We discuss the gauge-Higgs unification in a framework of Lifshitz type gauge theory. We study a higher dimensional gauge theory on R^{D-1}\times S^{1} in which the normal second (first) order derivative terms for scalar (fermion) fields in the action are replaced by higher order derivative ones for the direction of the extra dimension. We provide some mathematical tools to evaluate a one-loop effective potential for the zero mode of the extra component of a higher dimensional gauge field and clarify how the higher order derivative terms affect the standard form of the effective potential. Our …
We consider the subset of gauged maximal supergravities that consists of the SO(n+1) gauge fields A^{ij} and the scalar deformation T^{ij} of the S^n in the spherical reduction of M-theory or type IIB. We focus on the Abelian Cartan subgroup and the diagonal entries of T^{ij}. The resulting theories can be viewed as the STU models with additional hyperscalars. We find that the theories with only one or two such vectors can be generalized naturally to arbitrary dimensions. The same is true for the D=4 or 5 Einstein-Maxwell theory with such a hyperscalar. The gauge fields become massive, determi…
We point out that the metrics recently proposed by K. Balasubramanian and J. McGreevy \cite{BalaMcGreevyLifshitz} as gravitational duals to Lifshitz Chern-Simons gauge theories contain both a hidden null singularity and a region of closed timelike curves accessible to asymptotic observers. Like the singularity in the original Liftshitz spacetime given by Kachru, Liu, and Mulligan, this singularity does not include large $α'$ or $g_s$ corrections and hence appears to be singular in string theory as well as classically.
We reconsider a recently proposed action for a free particle which is compatible with Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, and then obtain the subluminal and the superluminal limits without gauge ambiguity in terms of Hamiltonian formulation.
We study the origin of fermion mass hierarchy and flavor mixing in a Lifshitz type extension of the standard model including an extra scalar field. We show that the hierarchical structure can originate from renormalizable interactions. In contrast to the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, the higher the dimension of associated operators, the heavier the fermion masses. Tiny masses for left-handed neutrinos are obtained without introducing right-handed neutrinos.
Taking as a probe an SU(2) gauge field with Yang-Mills action in a 3+1 dimensional Lifshitz black hole background, we use the gauge/gravity correspondence to discuss finite temperature effects in the dual theory defined on the boundary. In order to test the dependence of results on the anisotropic scaling exponent z we consider two analytical black hole solutions with z=2 and z=4. Apart from solving the equations of motion in the bulk using a numerical approach, we also apply an analytical approximation allowing the determination of the phase transition character, the critical exponent and the…
Electron stars are fluids of charged fermions in Anti-de Sitter spacetime. They are candidate holographic duals for gauge theories at finite charge density and exhibit emergent Lifshitz scaling at low energies. This paper computes in detail the field theory Green's function G^R(w,k) of the gauge-invariant fermionic operators making up the star. The Green's function contains a large number of closely spaced Fermi surfaces, the volumes of which add up to the total charge density in accordance with the Luttinger count. Excitations of the Fermi surfaces are long lived for w <~ k^z. Beyond w ~ k^z …
We study two-dimensional F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity from the Hamiltonian point of view. We determine constraints structure with emphasis on the careful separation of the second class constraints and global first class constraints. We determine number of physical degrees of freedom and also discuss gauge fixing of the global first class constraints.
A model of 3+1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant coupled to abelian gauge fields has been proposed as a gravity dual for Lifshitz like critical phenomena in 2+1 dimensions. The finite temperature behavior is described by black holes that are asymptotic to the Lifshitz fixed point geometry. There is a one-parameter family of charged black holes, where the magnitude of the charge is uniquely determined by the black hole area. These black holes are thermodynamically stable and become extremal in the limit of vanishing size. The theory also has a discrete spectrum of localize…
We study asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes and the constraints on flows between Lifshitz fixed points imposed by the null energy condition. In contrast with the relativistic holographic c-theorem, where the effective AdS radius, L, is monotonically decreasing in the IR, for Lifshitz backgrounds we find that both L and z may flow in either direction. We demonstrate this with several numerical examples in a phenomenological model with a massive gauge field coupled to a real scalar.
We explore in greater detail our investigations of shear diffusion in hyperscaling violating Lifshitz theories in arXiv:1604.05092 [hep-th]. This adapts and generalizes the membrane-paradigm-like analysis of Kovtun, Son and Starinets for shear gravitational perturbations in the near horizon region given certain self-consistent approximations, leading to the shear diffusion constant on an appropriately defined stretched horizon. In theories containing a gauge field, some of the metric perturbations mix with some of the gauge field perturbations and the above analysis is somewhat more complicate…
We present the analytic Lifshitz solutions for a scalar field model minimally coupled with the abelian gauge field in $N$ dimensions. We also consider the presence of cosmological constant $Λ$. The Lifshitz parameter $z$ appearing in the solution plays the role of the Lorentz breaking parameter of the model. We investigate the thermodynamical properties of the solutions and discuss the energy issue. Furthermore, we study the hairy black hole solutions in which the abelian gauge field breaks the symmetry near the horizon. In the holographic picture, it is equivalent to a second order phase tran…
We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero temperature in field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling, with critical exponent $z=3$, including scalar, fermion and gauge fields. The fermion determinant generates a symmetry breaking term at one loop in the effective potential and a local minimum appears, for non zero scalar field, for every value of the Yukawa coupling. Depending on the relative strength of the coupling constants for the scalar and the gauge field, we find a second symmetry breaking local minimum in the effective potential for a bigger value of the scalar field.
We study asymptotically Lifshitz solutions to three dimensional higher spin gravity in the SL(3,R)xSL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation. We begin by specifying the most general connections satisfying Lifshitz boundary conditions, and we verify that their algebra of symmetries contains a Lifshitz sub-algebra. We then exhibit connections that can be viewed as higher spin Lifshitz black holes. We show that when suitable holonomy conditions are imposed, these black holes obey sensible thermodynamics and possess a gauge in which the corresponding metric exhibits a regular horizon.
In this work the generation of generalized Chern-Simons terms in three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with high spatial derivatives is studied. We analyze the self-energy corrections to the gauge field propagator by considering an expansion of the amplitude up to third order in the external momenta. The divergences of the corrections are determined and explicit forms for the Chern-Simons terms with high derivatives are obtained. Some unusual aspects of the calculation are stressed and the existence of a smooth isotropic limit is proved. The transversality of the anisotropic gauge propagat…
In this paper three dimensional higher spin theories in the Chern-Simons formulation with gauge algebra $sl(N,R)$ are investigated which have Lifshitz symmetry with scaling exponent $z$. We show that an explicit map exists for all $z$ and $N$ relating the Lifshitz Chern-Simons theory to the $(n,m)$ element of the KdV hierarchy. Furthermore we show that the map and hence the conserved charges are independent of $z$. We derive these result from the Drinfeld-Sokolov formalism of integrable systems.
We analyze if and to what extent the high energy behaviour of five-dimensional (5D) gauge theories can be improved by adding certain higher dimensional operators of "Lifshitz" type, without breaking the ordinary four-dimensional Lorentz symmetries. We show that the UV behaviour of the transverse gauge field polarizations can be improved by the Lifshitz operators, while the longitudinal polarizations get strongly coupled at energies lower than the ones in ordinary 5D theories, spoiling the usefulness of the construction in non-abelian gauge theories. We conclude that the improved behaviour as e…
We study the propagation of a scalar, the trace of $h_{ij}$ in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant $λ$. It turns out that this scalar is not a propagating mode in the Minkowski spacetime background. In this work, we do not choose a gauge-fixing to identify the physical degrees of freedom and instead, make it possible by substituting the constraints into the quadratic Lagrangian.
In this note we searched for a family of solutions with Caustic singularity in non relativistic-renormalizable Ho$\check {\textbf{r}}$ava-Lifshitz (HL)theory without the general covariant. We show that in infrared (IR) limit and with a deviation from $λ=1$ we have no caustic singularity. Also in ultraviolet (UV) regime and for Ricci flat 3-dimensional (3d) spaces and codimension 1 and for $λ\neq1$ the non linear terms should help bouncing this kind of most dangerous would be caustics. But if 3d curvature does not vanish, higher curvature terms do help caustics even in codimension one. Thus the…
We analyze the electromagnetic-gravity interaction in a pure Hořava-Lifshitz framework. To do so we formulate the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in $4+1$ dimensions and perform a Kaluza-Klein reduction to $3+1$ dimensions. We use this reduction as a mathematical procedure to obtain the $3+1$ coupled theory, which at the end is considered as a fundamental, self-consistent, theory. The critical value of the dimensionless coupling constant in the kinetic term of the action is $λ=1/4$. It is the kinetic conformal point for the non-relativistic electromagnetic-gravity interaction. In distinction, the corr…
We study the transport coefficients, including the conductivities and shear viscosity of the non-relativistic field theory dual to the Lifshitz black brane with multiple U(1) gauge fields by virtue of the gauge/gravity duality. Focusing on the case of double U(1) gauge fields, we systematically investigate the electric, thermal and thermoelectric conductivities for the dual non-relativistic field theory. In the large frequency regime, we find a nontrivial power law behavior in the electric AC conductivity when the dynamical critical exponent z>1 in (2+1)-dimensional field theory. The relations…
We study field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge dipole symmetries. The famous Lifshitz theory is an example of a theory with a global dipole symmetry. We study in detail its 1+1d version with a compact field. When this global symmetry is promoted to a $U(1)$ dipole gauge symmetry, the corresponding gauge field is a tensor gauge field. This theory is known to lead to fractons. In order to resolve various subtleties in the precise meaning of these global or gauge symmetries, we place these 1+1d theories on a lattice and then take the continuum limit. Interestingly, the continuum …
We study the time evolution of the expectation value of a rectangular Wilson loop in strongly anisotropic time-dependent plasma using gauge-gravity duality. The corresponding gravity theory is given by describing time evolution of a classical string in the Lifshitz-Vaidya background. We show that the expectation value of the Wilson loop oscillates about the value of the static potential with the same parameters after the energy injection is over. We discuss how the amplitude and frequency of the oscillation depend on the parameters of the theory. In particular, by raising the anisotropy parame…
Recently, Horava and Melby-Thompson proposed in arXiv:1007.2410 a nonrelativistic gravity theory with extended gauge symmetry that is free of the spin-0 graviton. We propose a minimal substitution recipe to implement this extended gauge symmetry which reproduce the results obtained by them. Our prescription has the advantage of being manifestly gauge invariant and immediately generalizable to other fields, like matter. We briefly discuss the coupling of gravity with scalar and vector fields found by our method. We show also that the extended gauge invariance in gravity does not force the value…
We show that the gauge and metric field contribution to the axial anomaly of a four-dimensional massless Lifshitz fermion theory with anisotropy scaling exponent z is identical to the relativistic case, hereby extending the results found in arXiv:1103.5693 to arbitrary values of z. This is in accordance with the fact that the axial anomaly is an infra-red phenomenon in disguise. We also provide some new models that realize baryon and lepton number violation in non-relativistic theories of gravity. In all cases, the volume of space exhibits a lower bound that is fixed by the gravitational coupl…
We introduce the electromagnetic-gravitational coupling in the Hořava-Lifshitz framework, in $3+1$ dimensions, by considering the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity theory in $4+1$ dimensions at the kinetic conformal point and then performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction to $3+1$ dimensions. The action of the theory is second order in time derivatives and the potential contains only higher order spacelike derivatives up to $z=4$, $z$ being the critical exponent. These terms include also higher order derivative terms of the electromagnetic field. The propagating degrees of freedom of the theory are exactly th…
We show that certain three-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz gravity theories can be written as Chern-Simons gauge theories on various non-relativistic algebras. The algebras are specific extensions of the Bargmann, Newton-Hooke and Schroedinger algebra each of which has the Galilean algebra as a subalgebra. To show this we employ the fact that Horava-Lifshitz gravity corresponds to dynamical Newton-Cartan geometry. In particular, the extended Bargmann (Newton-Hooke) Chern-Simons theory corresponds to projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a local U(1) gauge symmetry without (with) a cosmological …
One way to relate semiclassical string states and dual gauge theory states is to show the equivalence between their low-energy effective 2d actions. The gauge theory effective action, which is represented by an effective Landau-Lifshitz (LL) model, was previously found to match with the string theory world-sheet action up to the first two orders in the effective parameter $\tildeλ ={λ/ J^2}$, where $λ$ is the `t Hooft coupling and $J$ is the total $R$-charge. Here we address the question if quantizing the effective LL action reproduces the subleading 1/J corrections to the spin chain energies …
We find infinite families of supersymmetric solutions of four dimensional, N=2 gauged supergravity with Lifshitz, Schrodinger and also AdS symmetries. We focus on the canonical example of a single hypermultiplet and a single vector multiplet and find that the spectrum of solutions depends crucially on whether the gaugings are electric or magnetic but to a far milder extent on the strength of the gaugings. For purely electric or purely magnetic gaugings we generically find Lifshitz solutions, while for a mixed gauging we find Schrodinger and AdS solutions. For some of the gaugings the theory ha…
We find that the four dimensional cosmological Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with $SU(2)$ gauge group admits Lifshitz spacetime as a base solution for the dynamical exponent $z>1$. Motivated by this, we next demonstrate numerically that the field equations admit black hole solutions which behave regularly on the horizon and at spatial infinity for different horizon topologies. The solutions depend on one parameter, the strength of the gauge field at the horizon, which is fine-tuned to capture the Lifshitz asymptotics at infinity. We also discuss the behavior of solutions and the change in Hawking…
We investigate the linear cosmological perturbations of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in a FRW universe without any matter. Our results show that a new gauge invariant dynamical scalar mode emerges, due to the gauge transformation under the "foliation-preserving" diffeomorphism and "projectability condition", and it can produce a scale invariant power spectrum. In the infrared regime with $λ=1$, the dynamical scalar degree of freedom turns to be a non-dynamical one at the linear order level.
In the minimal formulation of gravity with Lifshitz-type anisotropic scaling, the gauge symmetries of the system are foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms of spacetime. Consequently, compared to general relativity, the spectrum contains an extra scalar graviton polarization. Here we investigate the possibility of extending the gauge group by a local U(1) symmetry to "nonrelativistic general covariance." This extended gauge symmetry eliminates the scalar graviton, and forces the coupling constant $λ$ in the kinetic term of the minimal formulation to take its relativistic value, $λ=1$. The result…
We construct an N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory from z=3 Lifshitz field theory. By modifying the supersymmetry (susy) algebra based on the spacetime symmetry SO(3) $\times$ scaling symmetry, we get a supersymmetric Lagrangian with scalar, fermion and gauge fields, all of whom have the same limiting speed. This solves some naturalness problems of the original Lifshitz theory which is characterized by Lorentz symmetry violation. In order that the susy breaking does not introduce any disastrous terms into the theory, the susy breaking scale is required to be smaller than the scale of Lorentz symm…
In Horava-Lifshitz gravity, the extra dynamical scalar mode could play significant role in cosmology. However it has been pointed out that such a scalar may suffer from the strong coupling problem in IR. We address this issue in this paper. Our analysis shows that the scalar mode could decouple naturally at λ=1 due to the extra gauge symmetry. On the other hand, the fact that the scalar mode becomes ghost when 1/3<λ<1 is a real challenge to the theory. We try to overcome this problem by modifying the action such that the RG flow lies outside the problematic region. We discuss the cosmological …
In this work we study a z=3 Horava-Lifshitz-like extension of QED in (3+1) dimensions. We calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the two and three-point functions of the gauge and fermion fields. Such corrections were achieved using the perturbative approach and a dimensional regularization was performed only in the spatial sector. Renormalization was required to eliminate the divergent contributions emergent from the photon and electron self-energies and from the three-point function. We verify that the one-loop vertex functions satisfy the usual Ward identities and using renormaliza…
We study the holographic dark energy on the subject of Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity with a time dependent gravitational constant (G(t)), in the non-flat space-time. We obtain the differential equation that specify the evolution of the dark energy density parameter based on varying gravitational constant. we find out a relation for the state parameter of the dark energy equation to low redshifts which containing varying $G$ correction.
In a previous paper (hep-th/0509071), it was shown that quantum 1/J corrections to the BMN spectrum in an effective Landau-Lifshitz (LL) model match with the results from the one-loop gauge theory, provided one chooses an appropriate regularization. In this paper we continue this study for the conjectured Bethe ansatz for the long range spin chain representing perturbative planar N=4 Super Yang-Mills in the SU(2) sector, and the ``quantum string" Bethe ansatz for its string dual. The comparison is carried out for corrections to BMN energies up to 3rd order in the effective expansion parameter …
A spherically symmetric solution of the field equations of the Hořava--Lifshitz gravity--gauge vector interaction theory is obtained and analyzed. It describes a charged throat. The solution exists provided a restriction on the relation between the mass and charge is satisfied. The restriction reduces to the Reissner--Nordström one in the limit in which the coupling constants tend to the relativistic values of General Relativity. We introduce the correct charts to describe the solution across the entire manifold, including the throat connecting an asymptotic Minkowski space--time with a singul…
