We fully investigate the symmetry breaking patterns occurring upon creation of composite non-Abelian strings: vortex strings in non-Abelian theories where different sets of colours have different amounts of flux. After spontaneous symmetry breaking, there remains some internal colour degrees of freedom attached to these objects, which we argue must exist in a Flag manifold, a more general kind of projective space than both $\mathbb{CP}(N)$ and the Grassmannian manifold. These strings are expected to be BPS, since its constituents are. We demonstrate that this is true and construct a low-energy effective action for the fluctuations of the internal Flag moduli, which we then re-write it in two different ways for the dynamics of these degrees of freedom: a gauged linear sigma model with auxiliary fields and a non-linear sigma model with an explicit target space metric for the Flag Manifolds, both of which $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric. We finish by performing some groundwork analysis of the resulting theory.
In the present paper we study flag manifold sigma-models that admit a zero-curvature representation. It is shown that these models may be naturally considered as interacting (holomorphic and anti-holomorphic) $βγ$-systems. Besides, using the theory of nilpotent orbits of complex Lie groups, we establish a relation to the principal chiral model.
We construct a gauged linear sigma-model representation and develop a 1/N-expansion for flag manifold sigma-models previously proposed by the author. Classically there exists a zero-curvature representation for the equations of motion of these models, which leads in particular to the existence of a conserved non-local charge. We show that at the quantum level this charge is no longer conserved and calculate explicitly the anomaly in its conservation law.
We study a sigma-model with target space the flag manifold U(3)/U(1)^3. A peculiarity of the model is that the complex structure on the target space enters explicitly in the action. We describe the classical solutions of the model for the case when the worldsheet is a sphere CP^1.
This review is dedicated to two-dimensional sigma models with flag manifold target spaces, which are generalizations of the familiar $CP^{n-1}$ and Grassmannian models. They naturally arise in the description of continuum limits of spin chains, and their phase structure is sensitive to the values of the topological angles, which are determined by the representations of spins in the chain. Gapless phases can in certain cases be explained by the presence of discrete 't Hooft anomalies in the continuum theory. We also discuss integrable flag manifold sigma models, which provide a generalization o…
We examine topological terms of $(2+1)$d sigma models and their consequences in the light of classifications of invertible quantum field theories utilizing bordism groups. In particular, we study the possible topological terms for the $U(N)/U(1)^N$ flag-manifold sigma model in detail. We argue that the Hopf-like term is absent, contrary to the expectation from a nontrivial homotopy group $π_3(U(N)/U(1)^N)=\mathbb{Z}$, and thus skyrmions cannot become anyons with arbitrary statistics. Instead, we find that there exist ${N(N-1)\over 2}-1$ types of Chern-Simons terms, some of which can turn skyrm…
We investigate the phase structure of the compactified $2$-dimensional nonlinear $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model with respect to two $θ$-terms. Based on the circle compactification with the ${\mathbb Z}_{3}$-twisted boundary condition, which preserves an 't Hooft anomaly of the original uncompactified theory, we perform the semiclassical analysis based on the dilute instanton gas approximation (DIGA). We clarify classical vacua of the theory and derive fractional instanton solutions connecting these vacua. The resulting phase structure based on DIGA exhibits the quantum phase transitions and t…
We study (1+1)-dimensional non-linear sigma models whose target space is the flag manifold $U(N)\over U(N_1)\times U(N_2)\cdots U(N_m)$, with a specific focus on the special case $U(N)/U(1)^{N}$. These generalize the well-known $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model. The general flag model exhibits several new elements that are not present in the special case of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model. It depends on more parameters, its global symmetry can be larger, and its 't Hooft anomalies can be more subtle. Our discussion based on symmetry and anomaly suggests that for certain choices of the integers $N_I$ and…
In this paper we outline some aspects of nonabelian gauged linear sigma models. First, we review how partial flag manifolds (generalizing Grassmannians) are described physically by nonabelian gauged linear sigma models, paying attention to realizations of tangent bundles and other aspects pertinent to (0,2) models. Second, we review constructions of Calabi-Yau complete intersections within such flag manifolds, and properties of the gauged linear sigma models. We discuss a number of examples of nonabelian GLSM's in which the Kahler phases are not birational, and in which at least one phase is r…
We discuss the two-dimensional Grassmannian $SU(N)/S(U(N-2)\times U(2))$ and the flag $SU(N)/S(U(N-2)\times U(1)\times U(1))$ sigma models on a finite interval and construct analytical solutions of gap equations in the large N limit. We show that the flag model admits a homogeneous solution for `mixed' Dirichlet-Neumann (DN) boundary conditions only for sufficiently large length $L$ and undergoes a phase transition from the phase of partly broken gauge symmetry ($U(1)$) to the symmetric phase ($U(1)\times U(1)$) for large $L$. On the other hand, the Grassmannian model has a detached phase with…
One dimensional SU($n$) chains with the same irreducible representation $\mathcal{R}$ at each site are considered. We determine which $\mathcal{R}$ admit low-energy mappings to a $\text{SU}(n)/[\text{U}(1)]^{n-1}$ flag manifold sigma model, and calculate the topological angles for such theories. Generically, these models will have fields with both linear and quadratic dispersion relations; for each $\mathcal{R}$, we determine how many fields of each dispersion type there are. Finally, for purely linearly-dispersing theories, we list the irreducible representations that also possess a $\mathbb{…
We study the integer quantum Hall plateau transition using composite fermion mean-field theory. We show that the topological $θ= π$ term in the associated nonlinear sigma model [P. Kumar et al., Phys. Rev. B 100, 235124 (2019)] is stable against a certain particle-hole symmetry violating perturbation, parameterized by the composite fermion effective mass. This result, which applies to both the Halperin, Lee, and Read and Dirac composite fermion theories, represents an emergent particle-hole symmetry. For a disorder ensemble without particle-hole symmetry, we find that $θ$ can vary continuously…
We extend our analysis in [arXiv:0801.4782] and show that the chiral algebras of (0,2) sigma models are totally trivialized by worldsheet instantons for all complete flag manifolds of compact semisimple Lie groups. Consequently, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. Our results verify Stolz's idea that there are no harmonic spinors on the loop spaces of these flag manifolds. Moreover, they also imply that the kernels of certain twisted Dirac operators on these spaces will be empty under a "quantum" deformation of their geometries.
We extend the traditional formulation of Gauge Field Theory by incorporating the (non-Abelian) gauge group parameters (traditionally simple spectators) as new dynamical (nonlinear-sigma-model-type) fields. These new fields interact with the usual Yang-Mills fields through a generalized minimal coupling prescription, which resembles the so-called Stueckelberg transformation, but for the non-Abelian case. Here we study the case of internal gauge symmetry groups, in particular, unitary groups U(N). We show how to couple standard Yang-Mills Theory to Nonlinear-Sigma Models on cosets of U(N): compl…
The short-distance singularity of the product of a composite scalar field that deforms a field theory and an arbitrary composite field can be expressed geometrically by the beta functions, anomalous dimensions, and a connection on the theory space. Using this relation, we compute the connection perturbatively for the O(N) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. We show that the connection becomes free of singularities at zero temperature only if we normalize the composite fields so that their correlation functions have well-defined limits at zero temperature.
We study a new class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras W_\infty(p,q) generalizing the standard W_\infty algebra, viewed as a tensor operator algebra of SU(1,1) in a group-theoretic framework. Here we interpret W_\infty(p,q) either as an infinite continuation of the pseudo-unitary symmetry U(p,q), or as a "higher-U(p,q)-spin extension" of the diffeomorphism algebra diff(p,q) of the N=p+q torus U(1)^N. We highlight this higher-spin structure of W_\infty(p,q) by developing the representation theory of U(p,q) (discrete series), calculating higher-spin representations, coherent states and derivi…
A four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model with the Eguchi-Hanson (ALE) target space and a non-vanishing central charge is rewritten to a classically equivalent and formally renormalizable gauged `linear' sigma-model over a non-compact coset space in N=2 harmonic superspace by making use of an N=2 vector gauge superfield as the Lagrange multiplier. It is then demonstrated that the N=2 vector gauge multiplet becomes dynamical after taking into account one-loop corrections due to quantized hypermultiplets. This implies the appearance of a composite gauge boson, a composite chir…
We study composite solitons, consisting of domain walls and vortex lines attaching to the walls in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When the total density of two components is homogeneous, the system can be mapped to the O(3) nonlinear sigma model for the pseudospin representing the two-component order parameter and the analytical solutions of the composite solitons can be obtained. Based on the analytical solutions, we discuss the detailed structure of the composite solitons in two-component condensates by employing the generalized nonlinear sigma model, where all degrees of freedom o…
A multidimensional gravitational model containing several dilatonic scalar fields and antisymmetric forms is considered. The manifold is chosen in the form M = M_0 x M_1 x ... x M_n, where M_i are Einstein spaces (i > 0). The block-diagonal metric is chosen and all fields and scale factors of the metric are functions on M_0. For the forms composite (electro-magnetic) p-brane ansatz is adopted. The model is reduced to gravitating self-interacting sigma-model with certain constraints. In pure electric and magnetic cases the number of these constraints is m(m - 1)/2 where m is number of 1-dimensi…
We investigate in the simplest compact D=4 N=1 Type IIB orientifold models the sigma-model symmetry suggested by the proposed duality of these models to heterotic orbifold vacua. This symmetry is known to be present at the classical level, and is associated to a composite connection involving untwisted moduli in the low-energy supergravity theory. In order to study possible anomalies arising at the quantum level, we compute potentially anomalous one-loop amplitudes involving gluons, gravitons and composite connections. We argue that the effective vertex operator associated to the composite con…
The existence of higher-spin quantum conserved currents in two dimensions guarantees quantum integrability. We revisit the question of whether classically-conserved local higher-spin currents in two-dimensional sigma models survive quantization. We define an integrability index $\mathcal{I}(J)$ for each spin $J$, with the property that $\mathcal{I}(J)$ is a lower bound on the number of quantum conserved currents of spin $J$. In particular, a positive value for the index establishes the existence of quantum conserved currents. For a general coset model, with or without extra discrete symmetries…
It is well-known that sigma-models with symmetric target spaces are classically integrable. At the example of the model with target space the flag manifold U(3)/U(1)^3 -- a non-symmetric space -- we show that the introduction of torsion allows to cast the equations of motion in the form of a zero-curvature condition for a one-parametric family of connections, which can be a sign of integrability of the theory. We also elaborate on geometric aspects of the proposed model.
We construct static and also time-dependent solutions in a non-linear sigma model with target space being the flag manifold $F_2=SU(3)/U(1)^2$ on the four dimensional Minkowski space-time by analytically solving the second order Euler-Lagrange equation. We show the static solutions saturate an energy lower bound and can be derived from coupled first order equations though they are saddle point solutions. We also discuss basic properties of the time-dependent solutions.
The current algebra of classical non-linear sigma models on arbitrary Riemannian manifolds is analyzed. It is found that introducing, in addition to the Noether current $j_μ$ associated with the global symmetry of the theory, a composite scalar field $j$, the algebra closes under Poisson brackets.
We show that in the context of two-dimensional sigma models minimal coupling of an ordinary rigid symmetry Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ leads naturally to the appearance of the "generalized tangent bundle" $\mathbb{T}M \equiv TM \oplus T^*M$ by means of composite fields. Gauge transformations of the composite fields follow the Courant bracket, closing upon the choice of a Dirac structure $D \subset \mathbb{T}M$ (or, more generally, the choide of a "small Dirac-Rinehart sheaf" $\cal{D}$), in which the fields as well as the symmetry parameters are to take values. In these new variables, the gauge …
We study the quantum sheaf cohomology of flag manifolds with deformations of the tangent bundle and use the ring structure to derive how the deformation transforms under the biholomorphic duality of flag manifolds. Realized as the OPE ring of A/2-twisted two-dimensional theories with (0,2) supersymmetry, quantum sheaf cohomology generalizes the notion of quantum cohomology. Complete descriptions of quantum sheaf cohomology have been obtained for abelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) and for nonabelian GLSMs describing Grassmannians. In this paper we continue to explore the quantum sheaf c…
It is known that the gauge field and its composite operators evolved by the Yang--Mills gradient flow are ultraviolet (UV) finite without any multiplicative wave function renormalization. In this paper, we prove that the gradient flow in the 2D $O(N)$ non-linear sigma model possesses a similar property: The flowed $N$-vector field and its composite operators are UV finite without multiplicative wave function renormalization. Our proof in all orders of perturbation theory uses a $(2+1)$-dimensional field theoretical representation of the gradient flow, which possesses local gauge invariance wit…
For the minimal O(N) sigma model, which is defined to be generated by the O(N) scalar auxiliary field alone, all n-point functions, till order 1/N included, can be expressed by elementary functions without logarithms. Consequently, the conformal composite fields of m auxiliary fields possess at the same order such dimensions, which are m times the dimension of the auxiliary field plus the order of differentiation.

In this paper the domain wall solutions of a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear $\mathbb{S}^2$-sigma hybrid model are exactly calculated. There exist two types of basic domain walls and two families of composite domain walls. The domain wall solutions have been identified by using a Bogomolny arrangement in a system of sphero-conical coordinates on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. The stability of all the domain walls is also investigated.
The domain wall solutions of a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear $S^2$-sigma hybrid model are unveiled. There are three types of basic topological walls and two types of degenerate families of composite - one topological, the other non-topological- walls. The domain wall solutions are identified as the finite action trajectories (in infinite time) of a related mechanical system that is Hamilton-Jacobi separable in sphero-conical coordinates. The physical and mathematical features of these domain walls are thoroughly discussed.
Composite non-Abelian vortices in N=2 supersymmetric U(2) SQCD are investigated. The internal moduli space of an elementary non-Abelian vortex is CP^1. In this paper we find a composite state of two coincident non-Abelian vortices explicitly solving the first order BPS equations. Topology of the internal moduli space T is determined in terms of a discrete quotient CP^2/Z_2. The spectrum of physical strings and confined monopoles is discussed. This gives indirect information about the sigma model with target space T.
We analyze cubic spin 3 interaction in AdS space using the higher spin extension of string-theoretic sigma-model constructed in our previous work, which low energy limit is described by AdS vacuum. We find that, in the leading order of the cosmological constant, the spin 3 correlator on the AdS4 string theory side reproduces the structure of 3 point function of composite operators, quadratic in free fields, in the dual vector model. The cancellation of terms violating higher spin holography is related to the value of the Liouville background charge in four dimensions.
We construct and study a closed, two-dimensional, quasi-topological (0,2) gauged sigma model with target space a smooth G-manifold, where G is any compact and connected Lie group. When the target space is a flag manifold of simple G, and the gauge group is a Cartan subgroup thereof, the perturbative model describes, purely physically, the recently formulated mathematical theory of "Twisted Chiral Differential Operators". This paves the way, via a generalized T-duality, for a natural physical interpretation of the geometric Langlands correspondence for simply-connected, simple, complex Lie grou…
In addition to superconformal symmetry, (1,1) supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma models on special holonomy manifolds have extra symmetries that are in one-to-one correspondence with the covariantly constant forms on these manifolds. The superconformal algebras extended by these symmetries close as W-algebras, i.e. they have field-dependent structure functions. It is shown that it is not possible to write down cohomological equations for potential quantum anomalies when the structure functions are field-dependent. In order to do this it is necessary to linearise the algebras by treating comp…
The equivalence between rank-2 anti-symmetric tensor fields, considered as gauge potentials, and torsionless non-linear $σ$-models suggests us to study the possibility of coupling tensorial matter with Yang-Mills fields, through the gauging of the isometries of the target space. We show that this coupling is actually possible; however, the matter appears no longer as an elementary field, but rather as a composite one, expressed in terms of the bosonic degrees of freedom of the $σ$-model. A possible phenomenological application is presented that describes the interactions among vector mesons in…
The recently derived current algebra of classical non-linear sigma models on arbitrary Riemannian manifolds is extended to include the energy-momentum tensor. It is found that in two dimensions the energy-momentum tensor $θ_{μν}$, the Noether current $j_μ$ associated with the global symmetry of the theory and the composite field $j$ appearing as the coefficient of the Schwinger term in the current algebra, together with the derivatives of $j_μ$ and $j$, generate a closed algebra. The subalgebra generated by the light-cone components of the energy-momentum tensor consists of two commuting copie…
In the present paper we revisit the so-called Haldane limit, i.e. a particular continuum limit, which leads from a spin chain to a sigma model. We use the coherent state formulation of the path integral to reduce the problem to a semiclassical one, which leads us to the observation that the Haldane limit is closely related to a Lagrangian embedding into the classical phase space of the spin chain. Using this property, we find a spin chain whose limit produces a relativistic sigma model with target space the manifold of complete flags U(N)/U(1)^N. We discuss possible other future applications o…
We show how non-commutativity arises from commutativity in the double sigma model. We demonstrate that this model is intrinsically non-commutative by calculating the propagators. In the simplest phase configuration, there are two dual copies of commutative theories. In general rotated frames, one gets a non-commutative theory and a commutative partner. Thus a non-vanishing $B$ also leads to a commutative theory. Our results imply that $O\left(D,D\right)$ symmetry unifies not only the big and small torus physics, but also the commutative and non-commutative theories. The physical interpretation…
The formulation of the non-linear sigma model in terms of flat connection allows the construction of a perturbative solution of a local functional equation encoding the underlying gauge symmetry. In this paper we discuss some properties of the solution at the one-loop level in D=4. We prove the validity of a weak power-counting theorem in the following form: although the number of divergent amplitudes is infinite only a finite number of divergent amplitudes have to be renormalized. The proof uses the linearized functional equation of which we provide the general solution in terms of local func…
In the framework of an approach to bosonization based on the use of fermionic composites as fundamental variables, a quadratic action in even Grassmann variables with the quantum numbers of the pions has been constructed. It includes the sigma-field in order to be invariant under SU(2)_L times SU(2)]_R transformations over the quarks. This action exhibits the Goldstone phenomenon reducing its symmetry to the O(3) isospin invariance. A squared mass for the pions is generated according to PCAC. The model has been investigated in the Stratonovitch-Hubbard representation, in which form it is remin…

We classify the topological terms (in a sense to be made precise) that may appear in a non-linear sigma model based on maps from an arbitrary worldvolume manifold to a homogeneous space $G/H$ (where $G$ is an arbitrary Lie group and $H \subset G$). We derive a new condition for $G$-invariance of topological terms, which is necessary and sufficient (at least when $G$ is connected), and discuss a variety of examples in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. In the present work we discuss only terms that may be written in terms of (possibly only locally-defined) differential forms on $G/H$, …
We revisit the construction of the composite Higgs models in a context of the bottom-up holographic approach. The soft wall framework is under consideration imposing the translation of the $4D$ global symmetry breaking characteristic to the new strongly interacting sector in the $5D$ bulk. The focus stays on the minimal $SO(5)\to SO(4)$ breaking pattern. The $5D$ model has a specific form inspired by the effective models of QCD, representing a generalized sigma model coupled both to the composite resonances and to the SM gauge bosons. The latter are treated as external $4D$ sources and concept…
The composite operator formalism is applied to QCD at finite temperature to calculate the masses of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. In particular the ratio of the sigma mass to the pion mass is an interesting measure of the degree of chiral symmetry breaking at different temperatures. We calculate the temperature T* at which M_sigma(T) < 2M_pi(T), above which the sigma partial width into two pions vanishes. We find T*=0.95T_c (where T_c is the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition), within the full effective potential given by the formalism. We find that an expansion a-la Landau…
Regarding the Skyrme-Faddeev model on $\mathbb R^3$ as a $\mathbb C \mathbb P^1$ sigma model, we propose $\mathbb C \mathbb P^n$ sigma models on $\mathbb R^{2n+1}$ as generalisations which may support finite energy Hopfion solutions in these dimensions. The topological charge stabilising these field configurations is the Chern-Simons charge, namely the volume integral of the Chern-Simons density which has a local expression in terms of the composite connection and curvature of the CP^n field. It turns out that subject to the sigma model constraint, this density is a total divergence. We prove …
We give an overview of various composite BPS configurations of string theory and M-theory p-branes represented as classical supergravity solutions. Type II string backgrounds can be obtained by S- and T- dualities from NS-NS string - 5-brane configurations corresponding to exact conformal sigma models. The single-center solutions can be also generated from the Schwarzschild solution by applying a sequence of boosts, dualities and taking the extremal limit. Basic `marginal' backgrounds representing threshold BPS bound states of branes are parametrised by a number of independent harmonic functio…
We classify bions in the Grassmann $Gr_{N_{\rm F},N_{\rm C}}$ sigma model (including the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We formulate these models as $U(N_{\rm C})$ gauge theories with $N_{\rm F}$ flavors in the fundamental representations. These theories can be promoted to supersymmetric gauge theories and further can be embedded into D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, termed neutral bions and charged bions, which are ident…
We derive the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the relativistic sigma model describing the AdS(4)XCP(3) string II A theory at strong coupling (i.e. in the Alday-Maldacena decoupling limit). The corresponding Y-system involves an infinite number of Y functions and is of a new type, although it shares a peculiar feature with the Y-system for AdS(4)XCP(3). A truncation of the equations at level p and a further generalisation to generic rank N allow us an alternative description of the theory as the N=4, p= \infty representative in an infinite family of models corresponding to the conforma…
We explore models with emergent gravity and metric by means of numerical simulations. A particular type of two-dimensional non-linear sigma-model is regularized and discretized on a quadratic lattice. It is characterized by lattice diffeomorphism invariance which ensures in the continuum limit the symmetry of general coordinate transformations. We observe a collective order parameter with properties of a metric, showing Minkowski or euclidean signature. The correlation functions of the metric reveal an interesting long-distance behavior with power-like decay. This universal critical behavior o…
The paper consists of two parts which seem to be independent of each other but at first glance only. In the Part one the field-to-particle transition formalism is applied to the sigma model (string), dilaton gravity and gauged supergravity 0-brane solutions. In addition to the fact that the field-to-particle transition is of interest itself it can be regarded also as the dynamical dimensional reduction which takes into account field fluctuations as well as one can treat it as the method of the consistent quantization in the vicinity of the nontrivial vacuum induced by a field solution. It is s…
In N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f>N we study the crossover transition from the weak coupling regime at large ξto strong coupling at small ξwhere ξis the Fayet--Iliopoulos parameter. We find that at strong coupling a dual non-Abelian weakly coupled N=2 theory exists which describes low-energy physics at small ξ. The dual gauge group is U(N_f-N) and the dual theory has N_f flavors of light dyons, to be compared with N_f quarks in the original U(N) theory. Both, the original and dual theories are Higgsed and share the same global symmetry SU(N) x SU(N_f-N) x U(1), albeit…
We introduce a new class of effective actions describing dynamically broken supersymmetric theories in an essentially non-perturbative region. Our approach is a generalization of the known supersymmetric non-linear sigma models, but allows in contrast to the latter the description of dynamical supersymmetry breaking by non-perturbative non-semiclassical effects. This non-perturbative breaking mechanism takes place in confined theories, where the effective fields are composite operators. It is necessary within the context of quantum effective actions and the associated concept of symmetry break…
We consider a class of simplified models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking built in terms of their five-dimensional weakly-coupled gravity duals, in the spirit of bottom-up holography. The sigma-model consists of two abelian gauge bosons and one real, non-charged scalar field coupled to gravity in five dimensions. The scalar potential is a simple exponential function of the scalar field. The background metric resulting from solving the classical equations of motion exhibits hyperscaling violation, at least at asymptotically large values of the radial direction. We study the spectrum o…
