We examine topological terms of $(2+1)$d sigma models and their consequences in the light of classifications of invertible quantum field theories utilizing bordism groups. In particular, we study the possible topological terms for the $U(N)/U(1)^N$ flag-manifold sigma model in detail. We argue that the Hopf-like term is absent, contrary to the expectation from a nontrivial homotopy group $π_3(U(N)/U(1)^N)=\mathbb{Z}$, and thus skyrmions cannot become anyons with arbitrary statistics. Instead, we find that there exist ${N(N-1)\over 2}-1$ types of Chern-Simons terms, some of which can turn skyrmions into fermions, and we write down explicit forms of effective Lagrangians.
We construct a gauged linear sigma-model representation and develop a 1/N-expansion for flag manifold sigma-models previously proposed by the author. Classically there exists a zero-curvature representation for the equations of motion of these models, which leads in particular to the existence of a conserved non-local charge. We show that at the quantum level this charge is no longer conserved and calculate explicitly the anomaly in its conservation law.
We study a sigma-model with target space the flag manifold U(3)/U(1)^3. A peculiarity of the model is that the complex structure on the target space enters explicitly in the action. We describe the classical solutions of the model for the case when the worldsheet is a sphere CP^1.
We study (1+1)-dimensional non-linear sigma models whose target space is the flag manifold $U(N)\over U(N_1)\times U(N_2)\cdots U(N_m)$, with a specific focus on the special case $U(N)/U(1)^{N}$. These generalize the well-known $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model. The general flag model exhibits several new elements that are not present in the special case of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model. It depends on more parameters, its global symmetry can be larger, and its 't Hooft anomalies can be more subtle. Our discussion based on symmetry and anomaly suggests that for certain choices of the integers $N_I$ and…
In the present paper we study flag manifold sigma-models that admit a zero-curvature representation. It is shown that these models may be naturally considered as interacting (holomorphic and anti-holomorphic) $βγ$-systems. Besides, using the theory of nilpotent orbits of complex Lie groups, we establish a relation to the principal chiral model.
This review is dedicated to two-dimensional sigma models with flag manifold target spaces, which are generalizations of the familiar $CP^{n-1}$ and Grassmannian models. They naturally arise in the description of continuum limits of spin chains, and their phase structure is sensitive to the values of the topological angles, which are determined by the representations of spins in the chain. Gapless phases can in certain cases be explained by the presence of discrete 't Hooft anomalies in the continuum theory. We also discuss integrable flag manifold sigma models, which provide a generalization o…
One dimensional SU($n$) chains with the same irreducible representation $\mathcal{R}$ at each site are considered. We determine which $\mathcal{R}$ admit low-energy mappings to a $\text{SU}(n)/[\text{U}(1)]^{n-1}$ flag manifold sigma model, and calculate the topological angles for such theories. Generically, these models will have fields with both linear and quadratic dispersion relations; for each $\mathcal{R}$, we determine how many fields of each dispersion type there are. Finally, for purely linearly-dispersing theories, we list the irreducible representations that also possess a $\mathbb{…
We fully investigate the symmetry breaking patterns occurring upon creation of composite non-Abelian strings: vortex strings in non-Abelian theories where different sets of colours have different amounts of flux. After spontaneous symmetry breaking, there remains some internal colour degrees of freedom attached to these objects, which we argue must exist in a Flag manifold, a more general kind of projective space than both $\mathbb{CP}(N)$ and the Grassmannian manifold. These strings are expected to be BPS, since its constituents are. We demonstrate that this is true and construct a low-energy…
We investigate the phase structure of the compactified $2$-dimensional nonlinear $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model with respect to two $θ$-terms. Based on the circle compactification with the ${\mathbb Z}_{3}$-twisted boundary condition, which preserves an 't Hooft anomaly of the original uncompactified theory, we perform the semiclassical analysis based on the dilute instanton gas approximation (DIGA). We clarify classical vacua of the theory and derive fractional instanton solutions connecting these vacua. The resulting phase structure based on DIGA exhibits the quantum phase transitions and t…
In this paper we outline some aspects of nonabelian gauged linear sigma models. First, we review how partial flag manifolds (generalizing Grassmannians) are described physically by nonabelian gauged linear sigma models, paying attention to realizations of tangent bundles and other aspects pertinent to (0,2) models. Second, we review constructions of Calabi-Yau complete intersections within such flag manifolds, and properties of the gauged linear sigma models. We discuss a number of examples of nonabelian GLSM's in which the Kahler phases are not birational, and in which at least one phase is r…
We discuss the two-dimensional Grassmannian $SU(N)/S(U(N-2)\times U(2))$ and the flag $SU(N)/S(U(N-2)\times U(1)\times U(1))$ sigma models on a finite interval and construct analytical solutions of gap equations in the large N limit. We show that the flag model admits a homogeneous solution for `mixed' Dirichlet-Neumann (DN) boundary conditions only for sufficiently large length $L$ and undergoes a phase transition from the phase of partly broken gauge symmetry ($U(1)$) to the symmetric phase ($U(1)\times U(1)$) for large $L$. On the other hand, the Grassmannian model has a detached phase with…
We construct integrable models on flag manifold by using the symplectic structure explicitly given in the Bruhat coordinatization of flag manifold. They are non-commutative integrable and some of the conserved quantities are given by the Casimir invariants. We quantize the systems using the coherent state path integral technique and find the exact expression for the propagator for some special cases.
We first review the description of flag manifolds in terms of Pluecker coordinates and coherent states. Using this description, we construct fuzzy versions of the algebra of functions on these spaces in both operatorial and star product language. Our main focus is here on flag manifolds appearing in the double fibration underlying the most common twistor correspondences. After extending the Pluecker description to certain supersymmetric cases, we also obtain the appropriate deformed algebra of functions on a number of fuzzy flag supermanifolds. In particular, fuzzy versions of Calabi-Yau super…
We compute the quantum cohomology of symplectic flag manifolds. Symplectic flag manifolds can be described by non-abelian GLSMs with superpotential. Although the ring relations cannot be directly read off from the equations of motion on the Coulomb branch due to complication introduced by the non-abelian gauge symmetry, it can be shown that they can be extracted from the localization formula in a gauge-invariant form. Our result is general for all symplectic flag manifolds, which reduces to previously established results on symplectic Grassmannians and complete symplectic flag manifolds derive…
We construct explicit complete Ricci-flat metrics on the total spaces of certain vector bundles over flag manifolds of the group $SU(n)$, for all Kähler classes. These metrics are natural generalizations of the metrics of Candelas-de la Ossa on the conifold, Pando Zayas-Tseytlin on the canonical bundle over $\mathbb{CP}^1\times \mathbb{CP}^1$, as well as the metrics on canonical bundles over flag manifolds, recently constructed by van Coevering.
As a generalization of our previous paper [GK], we formulate a residue formula and some simple behaviors of equivariant quantum cohomology applying to compute the quantum cohomology of partial flag manifolds $F_{k_1,\cdots , k_l} $with a try to give a rigorous definition of equivariant quantum cohomology.
We relate the quantum cohomology of minuscule flag manifolds to the tt*-Toda equations, a special case of the topological-antitopological fusion equations which were introduced by Cecotti and Vafa in their study of supersymmetric quantum field theories. To do this, we combine the Lie-theoretic treatment of the tt*-Toda equations of Guest-Ho with the Lie-theoretic description of the quantum cohomology of minuscule flag manifolds from Chaput-Manivel-Perrin and Golyshev-Manivel.
We compute the quantum cohomology rings of the partial flag manifolds F_{n_1\cdots n_k}=U(n)/(U(n_1)\times \cdots \times U(n_k)). The inductive computation uses the idea of Givental and Kim. Also we define a notion of the vertical quantum cohomology ring of the algebraic bundle. For the flag bundle F_{n_1\cdots n_k}(E) associated with the vector bundle E this ring is found.
We extend our analysis in [arXiv:0801.4782] and show that the chiral algebras of (0,2) sigma models are totally trivialized by worldsheet instantons for all complete flag manifolds of compact semisimple Lie groups. Consequently, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. Our results verify Stolz's idea that there are no harmonic spinors on the loop spaces of these flag manifolds. Moreover, they also imply that the kernels of certain twisted Dirac operators on these spaces will be empty under a "quantum" deformation of their geometries.
We discuss relations of Vafa's quantum cohomology with Floer's homology theory, introduce equivariant quantum cohomology, formulate some conjectures about its general properties and, on the basis of these conjectures, compute quantum cohomology algebras of the flag manifolds. The answer turns out to coincide with the algebra of regular functions on an invariant lagrangian variety of a Toda lattice.
We give a new interpretation and proof of the "quasi-particle" type character formulas for integrable representations of the simply-laced affine Kac-Moody algebras through a new "semi-infinite" construction of such representations. We compare formulas of this kind to other formulas obtained using the geometry of the corresponding flag manifold and in particular give a new proof to the Gordon type identities.
