The existence of higher-spin quantum conserved currents in two dimensions guarantees quantum integrability. We revisit the question of whether classically-conserved local higher-spin currents in two-dimensional sigma models survive quantization. We define an integrability index $\mathcal{I}(J)$ for each spin $J$, with the property that $\mathcal{I}(J)$ is a lower bound on the number of quantum conserved currents of spin $J$. In particular, a positive value for the index establishes the existence of quantum conserved currents. For a general coset model, with or without extra discrete symmetries, we derive an explicit formula for a generating function that encodes the indices for all spins. We apply our techniques to the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model, the $O(N)$ model, and the flag sigma model $\frac{U(N)}{U(1)^{N}}$. For the $O(N)$ model, we establish the existence of a spin-6 quantum conserved current, in addition to the well-known spin-4 current. The indices for the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model for $N>2$ are all non-positive, consistent with the fact that these models are not integrable. The indices for the flag sigma model $\frac{U(N)}{U(1)^{N}}$ for $N>2$ are all negative. Thus, it is unlikely that the flag sigma models are integrable.
A quantum integrability index was proposed in \cite{KMS}. It systematizes the Goldschmidt and Witten's operator counting argument \cite{GW} by using the conformal symmetry. In this work we compute the quantum integrability indexes for the symmetric coset models ${SU(N)}/{SO(N)}$ and $SO(2N)/{SO(N)\times SO(N)}$. The indexes of these theories are all non-positive except for the case of ${SO(4)}/{SO(2)\times SO(2)}$. Moreover we extend the analysis to the theories with fermions and consider a concrete theory: the $\mathbb{CP}^N$ model coupled with a massless Dirac fermion. We find that the index…
A wide class of models, built of the three component unit vector field living in the (3+1) Minkowski space-time, which break explicitly global O(3) symmetry are discussed. The symmetry breaking occurs due to the so-called dielectric function multiplying a standard symmetric term. Integrability conditions are found. Moreover, for some particular forms of the Lagrangian exact toroidal solutions with any Hopf index are obtained. It is proved that such symmetry breaking influences the shape of the solitons whereas the energy as well as the Hopf index remain unchanged.
Many physical systems like supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories are formulated as quantum matrix models. We discuss how to apply the Beth ansatz to exactly solve some supersymmetric quantum matrix models in the large-N limit. Toy models are constructed out of the one-dimensional Hubbard and t-J models as illustrations.
We study integrable models in the context of the recently discovered Gauge/YBE correspondence, where the Yang-Baxter equation is promoted to a duality between two supersymmetric gauge theories. We study flavored elliptic genus of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ quiver gauge theories, which theories are defined from statistical lattices regarded as quiver diagrams. Our R-matrices are written in terms of theta functions, and simplifies considerably when the gauge groups at the quiver nodes are Abelian. We also discuss the modularity properties of the R-matrix, reduction of 2d index to 1d Witten index, an…
We discuss the notion of integrability in quantum mechanics. Starting from a review of some definitions commonly used in the literature, we propose a different set of criteria, leading to a classification of models in terms of different integrability classes. We end by highlighting some of the expected physical properties associated to models fulfilling the proposed criteria.
We present a simple a direct proof of the complete integrability of the quantum KdV equation at $c=-2$, with an explicit description of all the conservation laws.
We show that Riemann surfaces, and separated variables immediately provide classical Poisson commuting Hamiltonians. We show that Baxter's equations for separated variables immediately provide quantum commuting Hamiltonians. The construction is simple, general, and does not rely on the Yang--Baxter equation.
We investigate the quantum integrability of the Alday-Arutyunov-Frolov (AAF) model by calculating the three-particle scattering amplitude at the first non-trivial order and showing that the S-matrix is factorizable at this order. We consider a more general fermionic model and find a necessary constraint to ensure its integrability at quantum level. We then show that the quantum integrability of the AAF model follows from this constraint. In the process, we also correct some missed points in earlier works.
We review recent applications of the integrable discrete Hirota dynamics (Y-system) in the context of calculation of the planar AdS/CFT spectrum. We start from the description of solution of Hirota equations by the Backlund method where the requirement of analyticity results in the nested Bethe ansatz equations. Then we discuss applications of the Hirota dynamics for the analysis of the asymptotic limit of long operators in the AdS/CFT Y-system.
We discuss non-compact SL(2,R) sectors in N=4 SYM and in AdS string theory and compare their integrable structures. We formulate and solve the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the finite gap solutions of the classical sigma model and show that at one loop it is identical to the classical limit of Bethe equations of the spin (-1/2) chain for the dilatation operator of SYM.
The main result of this note is the proof of degenerate quantum integrability of quantum spin Calogero--Moser systems and the description of the spectrum of quantum Hamiltonians in terms of the decomposition of tensor products of irreducible representations of corresponding Lie algebra.
This is an introduction to Quantum Integrability and Quantum Groups, a special issue collection of articles published in Journal of Physics A in memory of Petr P. Kulish. A list of Kulish's publications is included.
By using a variant of the quantum inverse scattering method, commutation relations between all elements of the quantum monodromy matrix of bosonic Massive Thirring (BMT) model are obtained. Using those relations, the quantum integrability of BMT model is established and the S-matrix of two-body scattering between the corresponding quasi particles has been obtained. It is observed that for some special values of the coupling constant, there exists an upper bound on the number of quasi-particles that can form a quantum-soliton state of BMT model. We also calculate the binding energy for a N-soli…
We consider a general anisotropic massive SU(N) fermionic model, and investigate its quantum integrability. In particular, by regularizing singular operator products, we derive a system of equations resulting in the S-matrix and find some non-trivial solutions. We illustrate our findings on the example of a SU(3) model, and show that the Yang-Baxter equation is satisfied in the massless limit for all coupling constants, while in the massive case the solutions are parameterized in terms of the exceptional solutions to the eight-vertex model.
In this article we review the basic concepts regarding quantum integrability. Special emphasis is given on the algebraic content of integrable models. The associated algebras are essentially described by the Yang-Baxter and boundary Yang-Baxter equations depending on the choice of boundary conditions. The relation between the aforementioned equations and the braid group is briefly discussed. A short review on quantum groups as well as the quantum inverse scattering method (algebraic Bethe ansatz) is also presented.
We investigate how the integrability conditions for conformal anomalies constrain the form of the effective action in even-dimensional quantum geometry. We show that the effective action of four-dimensional quantum geometry (4DQG) satisfying integrability has a manifestly diffeomorphism invariant and regularization scheme-independent form. We then generalize the arguments to six dimensions and propose a model of 6DQG. A hypothesized form of the 6DQG effective action is given.
Quantum canonical transformations are defined in analogy to classical canonical transformations as changes of the phase space variables which preserve the Dirac bracket structure. In themselves, they are neither unitary nor non-unitary. A definition of quantum integrability in terms of canonical transformations is proposed which includes systems which have fewer commuting integrals of motion than degrees of freedom. The important role of non-unitary transformations in integrability is discussed.
We apply the fusion procedure to a quantum Yang-Baxter algebra associated with time-discrete integrable systems, notably integrable quantum mappings. We present a general construction of higher-order quantum invariants for these systems. As an important class of examples, we present the Yang-Baxter structure of the Gel'fand-Dikii mapping hierarchy, that we have introduced in previous papers, together with the corresponding explicit commuting family of quantum invariants.
In this paper we consider affine Toda systems defined on the half-plane and study the issue of integrability, i.e. the construction of higher-spin conserved currents in the presence of a boundary perturbation. First at the classical level we formulate the problem within a Lax pair approach which allows to determine the general structure of the boundary perturbation compatible with integrability. Then we analyze the situation at the quantum level and compute corrections to the classical conservation laws in specific examples. We find that, except for the sinh-Gordon model, the existence of quan…
We study the quantum integrability of the O(N) nonlinear $σ$ (nls) model and the O(N) Gross-Neveu (GN) model on the half-line. We show that the \nls model is integrable with Neumann, Dirichlet and a mixed boundary condition, and that the GN model is integrable if $ψ_+^a\x=\pmψ_-^a\x$. We also comment on the boundary condition found by Corrigan and Sheng for the O(3) nls model.
Representation theory is shown to be incomplete in terms of enumerating all integrable limits of quantum systems. As a consequence, one can find exactly solvable Hamiltonians which have apparently strongly broken symmetry. The number of these hidden symmetries depends upon the realization of the Hamiltonian.
We show that the quantum-algebra-invariant open spin chains associated with the affine Lie algebras $A^{(1)}_n$ for $n>1$ are integrable. The argument, which applies to a large class of other quantum-algebra-invariant chains, does not require that the corresponding $R$ matrix have crossing symmetry.
These are lecture notes of an introduction to quantum integrability given at the Tenth Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics, 2014, aimed at PhD candidates and junior researchers in theoretical physics. We introduce spin chains and discuss the coordinate Bethe ansatz (CBA) for a representative example: the Heisenberg XXZ model. The focus lies on the structure of the CBA and on its main results, deferring a detailed treatment of the CBA for the general $M$-particle sector of the XXZ model to an appendix. Subsequently the transfer-matrix method is discussed for the six-vertex model, uncov…
In these lecture notes we aim for a pedagogical introduction to both classical and quantum integrability. Starting from Liouville integrability and passing through Lax pair and r-matrix we discuss the construction of the conserved charges for classical integrable models taking as example the harmonic oscillator. The construction of these charges for 2D integrable field theories is also discussed using a Lax connection and the Sine-Gordon model as example. On the quantum side, the XXZ spin chain is used to explain the systematic construction of the conserved charges starting from a quantum R-ma…
A scheme suitable for describing quantum nonultralocal models including supersymmetric ones is proposed. Braided algebras are generalised to be used through Baxterisation for constructing braided quantum Yang--Baxter equations. Supersymmetric and some known nonultralocal models are derived in the framework of the present approach. As further applications of this scheme construction of new quantum integrable nonultralocal models like mKdV and anyonic supersymmetric models including deformed anyonic super algebra are outlined.
Certain phase space path integrals can be evaluated exactly using equivariant cohomology and localization in the canonical loop space. Here we extend this to a general class of models. We consider hamiltonians which are {\it a priori} arbitrary functions of the Cartan subalgebra generators of a Lie group which is defined on the phase space. We evaluate the corresponding path integral and find that it is closely related to the infinitesimal Lefschetz number of a Dirac operator on the phase space. Our results indicate that equivariant characteristic classes could provide a natural geometric fram…
The relationship (resemblance and/or contrast) between quantum and classical integrability in Ruijsenaars-Schneider systems, which are one parameter deformation of Calogero-Moser systems, is addressed. Many remarkable properties of classical Calogero and Sutherland systems (based on any root system) at equilibrium are reported in a previous paper (Corrigan-Sasaki). For example, the minimum energies, frequencies of small oscillations and the eigenvalues of Lax pair matrices at equilibrium are all "integer valued". In this paper we report that similar features and results hold for the Ruijsenaar…
Integrable quantum systems of finite size are generically robust against weak enough integrability-breaking perturbations, but become quantum chaotic and thermalizing if the integrability-breaking is strong enough. We argue that the onset of quantum chaos can be described as a Fock-space delocalization process, with the eigenstates of the integrable system being taken as the "Fock states". The integrability-breaking perturbation introduces hopping in this Fock space, and chaos sets in when this hopping delocalizes the many-body eigenstates in this space. Depending on the range of the dominant …
In this paper we revisit several recent results on monotone and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers, providing new proofs. In particular, we use various versions of these numbers to discuss methods of derivation of quantum spectral curves from the point of view of KP integrability and derive new examples of quantum curves for the families of double Hurwitz numbers.
We provide a description of the quantum integrable structure behind the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA)-like equation derived by Nekrasov and Shatashvili (NS) for $\mathcal{N}=2$ 4d Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories. In this regime of the background, -- we shall show --, the instanton partition function is characterised by the solution of a TQ-equation. Exploiting a symmetry of the contour integrals expressing the partition function, we derive a 'dual' TQ-equation, sharing the same T-polynomial with the former. This fact allows us to evaluate to $1$ the quantum Wronskian of two dual solutions (…
Understanding the non-equilibrium dynamics of extended quantum systems after the trigger of a sudden, global perturbation (quench) represents a daunting challenge, especially in the presence of interactions. The main difficulties stem from both the vanishing time scale of the quench event, which can thus create arbitrarily high energy modes, and its non-local nature, which curtails the utility of local excitation bases. We here show that nonperturbative methods based on integrability can prove sufficiently powerful to completely characterize quantum quenches: we illustrate this using a model o…
We perform a Random Matrix Theory (RMT) analysis of the quantum four-state chiral Potts chain for different sizes of the chain up to size L=8. Our analysis gives clear evidence of a Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble statistics, suggesting the existence of a generalized time-reversal invariance. Furthermore a change from the (generic) GOE distribution to a Poisson distribution occurs when the integrability conditions are met. The chiral Potts model is known to correspond to a (star-triangle) integrability associated with curves of genus higher than zero or one. Therefore, the RMT analysis can also b…
We consider the compactifcation of 5d non-simply laced fractional quiver gauge theory constructed in arXiv:1705.04410. In contrast to the simply laced quivers, here two $Ω$-background parameters play different roles, so that we can take two possible Nekrasov-Shatashvili limits. We demonstrate how different quantum integrable systems can emerge from these two limits, using $BC_2$-quiver as the simplest illustrative example for our general results. We also comment possible connections with compactified 3d non-simply laced quiver gauge theory.
The exact quantum integrability problem of the membrane is investigated. It is found that the spherical membrane moving in flat target spacetime backgrounds is an exact quantum integrable system for a particular class of solutions of the light-cone gauge equations of motion : a dimensionally-reduced $SU(\infty)$ Yang-Mills theory to one temporal dimension. Crucial ingredients are the exact integrability property of the $3D~SU(\infty)$ continuous Toda theory and its associated dimensionally-reduced $SU(\infty)$ Toda $molecule$ equation whose symmetry algebra is the $U_\infty$ algebra obtained f…
We review the semiclassical analysis of strings in AdS5xS5 with a focus on the relationship to the underlying integrable structures. We discuss the perturbative calculation of energies for strings with large charges, using the folded string spinning in an AdS3 subset of AdS5 as our main example. Furthermore, we review the perturbative light-cone quantization of the string theory and the calculation of the worldsheet S-matrix.
The new method based on the SUSY algebra with supercharges of higher order in derivatives is proposed to search for dynamical symmetry operators in 2-dim quantum and classical systems. These symmetry operators arise when closing the SUSY algebra for a wide set of potentials. In some cases they are of 2-nd order in derivatives. The particular solutions are obtained also for potentials accepting symmetry operators of 4-th order. The investigation of quasiclassical limit of the SUSY algebra yields new classical integrals of motion for a certain type of systems which are polynomials of 4-th order …
We investigate an equivariant generalization of Morse theory for a general class of integrable models. In particular, we derive equivariant versions of the classical Poincaré-Hopf and Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorems and present the corresponding path integral generalizations. Our approach is based on equivariant cohomology and localization techniques, and is closely related to the formalism developed by Matthai and Quillen in their approach to Gaussian shaped Thom forms.
Exact massive S-matrices for two dimensional sigma models on symmetric spaces SU(2N)/Sp(N) and Sp(2P)/Sp(P)*Sp(P) are conjectured. They are checked by comparison of perturbative and non perturbative TBA calculations of free energy in a strong external field. We find the mass spectrum of the models and calculate their exact mass gap.
Quantum corrections to three-point functions of scalar single trace operators in planar N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory are studied using integrability. At one loop, we find new algebraic structures that not only govern all two loop corrections to the mixing of the operators but also automatically incorporate all one loop diagrams correcting the tree level Wick contractions. Speculations about possible extensions of our construction to all loop orders are given. We also match our results with the strong coupling predictions in the classical (Frolov-Tseytlin) limit.
By using a variant of quantum inverse scattering method (QISM) which is directly applicable to field theoretical systems, we derive all possible commutation relations among the operator valued elements of the monodromy matrix associated with an integrable derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) model. From these commutation relations we obtain the exact Bethe eigenstates for the quantum conserved quantities of DNLS model. We also explicitly construct the first few quantum conserved quantities including the Hamiltonian in terms of the basic field operators of this model. It turns out that this …
Non-local conserved charges in two-dimensional sigma models with target spaces $SO(2n)/SO(n){\times}SO(n)$ and $Sp(2n)/Sp(n){\times}Sp(n)$ are shown to survive quantization, unspoiled by anomalies; these theories are therefore integrable at the quantum level. Local, higher-spin, conserved charges are also shown to survive quantization in the $SO(2n)/SO(n){\times}SO(n)$ models.
We investigate the quantum integrability of the Landau-Lifshitz model and solve the long-standing problem of finding the local quantum Hamiltonian for the arbitrary n-particle sector. The particular difficulty of the LL model quantization, which arises due to the ill-defined operator product, is dealt with by simultaneously regularizing the operator product, and constructing the self-adjoint extensions of a very particular structure. The diagonalizibility difficulties of the Hamiltonian of the LL model, due to the highly singular nature of the quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian, are also resolved …
In this paper we continue the investigation of aspects of integrability of the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstrings. By constructing a one parameter family of flat connections we prove that the Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, without fixing the kappa-symmetry. We then compare the quantum dispersion relation, fixed by integrability up to an unknown interpolating function h(lambda), to explicit one-loop calculations on the string worldsheet. For AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) the spectrum contains heavy, …
Recent explorations of the AdS/CFT correspondence have unveiled integrable structures underlying both planar N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory and type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. Integrability in the gauge theory emerges from the fact that the dilatation generator can be identified with the Hamiltonian of an integrable quantum spin chain, and the classical string theory has been shown to contain infinite towers of hidden currents, a typical signature of integrability. Efforts to match the integrable structures of various classical string configurations to those of corresponding gauge theory…
Partial symmetries are described by generalized group structures known as symmetric inverse semigroups. We use the algebras arising from these structures to realize supersymmetry in (0+1) dimensions and to build many-body quantum systems on a chain. This construction consists in associating appropriate supercharges to chain sites, in analogy to what is done in spin chains. For simple enough choices of supercharges, we show that the resulting states have a finite non-zero Witten index, which is invariant under perturbations, therefore defining supersymmetric phases of matter protected by the in…
The issues related to the integrability of quantum Calogero-Moser models based on any root systems are addressed. For the models with degenerate potentials, i.e. the rational with/without the harmonic confining force, the hyperbolic and the trigonometric, we demonstrate the following for all the root systems: (i) Construction of a complete set of quantum conserved quantities in terms of a total sum of the Lax matrix (L), i.e. (\sum_{μ,ν\in{\cal R}}(L^n)_{μν}), in which ({\cal R}) is a representation space of the Coxeter group. (ii) Proof of Liouville integrability. (iii) Triangularity of the q…
A method is introduced for constructing lattice discretizations of large classes of integrable quantum field theories. The method proceeds in two steps: The quantum algebraic structure underlying the integrability of the model is determined from the algebra of the interaction terms in the light-cone representation. The representation theory of the relevant quantum algebra is then used to construct the basic ingredients of the quantum inverse scattering method, the lattice Lax matrices and R-matrices. This method is illustrated with four examples: The Sinh-Gordon model, the affine sl(3) Toda mo…
We discuss certain integrable quantum field theories in (1+1)-dimensions consisting of coupled sine/sinh-Gordon theories with N=1 supersymmetry, positive kinetic energy, and bosonic potentials which are bounded from below. We show that theories of this type can be constructed as Toda models based on the exceptional affine Lie superalgebra $D(2,1;\A)^{(1)}$ (or on related algebras which can be obtained as various limits) provided one adopts appropriate reality conditions for the fields. In particular, there is a continuous family of such models in which the couplings and mass ratios all depend …
We investigate the integrability of the Schwinger-Dyson equations in $c = 1 - \frac{6}{m(m+1)}$ string field theory which were proposed by Ikehara et al as the continuum limit of the Schwinger-Dyson equations of the matrix chain model. We show the continuum Schwinger-Dyson equations generate a closed algebra. This algebra contains Virasoro algebra but does not coincide with $W_{\infty}$ algebra. We include in the Schwinger-Dyson equations a new process of removing from the loop boundaries the operator ${\cal H}(σ)$ which locally changes the spin configuration. We also derive the string field H…
The integrability of the Bukhvostov-Lipatov four-fermion model is investigated. It is shown that the classical model possesses a current of Lorentz spin 3, conserved both in the bulk and on the half-line for specific types of boundary actions. It is then established that the conservation law is spoiled at the quantum level -- a fact that might indicate that the quantum Bukhvostov-Lipatov model is not integrable, contrary to what was previously believed.
We consider the monodromy matrix for the pure spinor IIB superstring on $AdS_5\times S^5$ at leading order at strong coupling, in particular its variation under an infinitesimal and continuous deformation of the contour. Such variation is equivalent to the insertion of a local operator. Demanding the BRST-closure for such an operator rules out its existence, implying that the monodromy matrix remains contour-independent at the first order in perturbation theory. Furthermore we explicitly compute the field strength corresponding to the flat connections up to leading order and directly check tha…
We propose a dynamical matrix product ansatz describing the stochastic dynamics of two species of particles with excluded-volume interaction and the quantum mechanics of the associated quantum spin chains respectively. Analyzing consistency of the time-dependent algebra which is obtained from the action of the corresponding Markov generator, we obtain sufficient conditions on the hopping rates for identifing the integrable models. From the dynamical algebra we construct the quadratic algebra of Zamolodchikov type, associativity of which is a Yang Baxter equation. The Bethe ansatz equations for…
Calogero-Moser systems are classical and quantum integrable multi-particle dynamics defined for any root system $Δ$. The {\em quantum} Calogero systems having $1/q^2$ potential and a confining $q^2$ potential and the Sutherland systems with $1/\sin^2q$ potentials have "integer" energy spectra characterised by the root system $Δ$. Various quantities of the corresponding {\em classical} systems, {\em e.g.} minimum energy, frequencies of small oscillations, the eigenvalues of the classical Lax pair matrices, etc. at the equilibrium point of the potential are investigated analytically as well as n…
The main aim of this work is to relate integrability in QFT with a complete particle interpretation directly to the principle of causal localization, circumventing the standard method of finding sufficiently many conservation laws. Its precise conceptual-mathematical formulation as "modular localization" within the setting of local operator algebras also suggests novel ways of looking at general (non-integrable) QFTs which are not based on quantizing classical field theories. Conformal QFT, which is known to admit no particle interpretation, suggest the presence of a "partial" integrability, r…
We review the study of Hopf algebras, classical and quantum R-matrices, infinite-dimensional Yangian symmetries and their representations in the context of integrability for the N=4 vs AdS5xS5 correspondence.
We continue the construction of the $:ϕ^4_4:$ quantum field theory. In this paper we consider the Wick kernel of the interacting quantum field. Using the complex structure and the Fock-Bargmann-Berezin-Segal integral representation we prove that this kernel defines a unique operator--valued generalized function on the space $\Sc^α(\R^4)$ for any $α<6/5,$ i.e. the constructed quantum field is the generalized operator-valued function of localizable Jaffe class. The same assertion is valid for the outgoing quantum field. These assertions about the quantum field allow to construct the Wightman fun…
This is an announcement of some of the results of a longer paper where the supersymmetric vacua of two dimensional N=2 susy gauge theories with matter are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the eigenstates of integrable spin chain Hamiltonians. The correspondence between the Heisenberg spin chain and the two dimensional U(N) theory with fundamental hypermultiplets is reviewed in detail. We demonstrate the isomorphism of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the cotangent bundle to the Grassmanian manifold Gr(N,L) and the ring of quantum integrals of motion of the length L SU(2) XXX …
Euclidean dilaton gravity in two dimensions is studied exploiting its representation as a complexified first order gravity model. All local classical solutions are obtained. A global discussion reveals that for a given model only a restricted class of topologies is consistent with the metric and the dilaton. A particular case of string motivated Liouville gravity is studied in detail. Path integral quantisation in generic Euclidean dilaton gravity is performed non-perturbatively by analogy to the Minkowskian case.
