Given a group-invariant quasi-free state on the algebra of canonical commutation relations (CCR), we show how group averaging techniques can be used to obtain a symmetry reduced CCR algebra and reduced quasi-free state. When the group is compact this method of symmetry reduction leads to standard results which can be obtained using other methods. When the group is non-compact the group averaging prescription relies upon technically favorable conditions which we delineate. As an example, we consider symmetry reduction of the usual vacuum state for a Klein-Gordon field on Minkowski spacetime by a non-compact subgroup of the Poincaré group consisting of a 1-parameter family of boosts, a 1-parameter family of spatial translations and a set of discrete translations. We show that the symmetry reduced CCR algebra and vacuum state correspond to that used by each of Berger, Husain, and Pierri for the polarized Gowdy ${\bf T}^3$ quantum gravity model.
In this paper we describe Routhian reduction as a special case of standard symplectic reduction, also called Marsden-Weinstein reduction. We use this correspondence to present a generalization of Routhian reduction for quasi-invariant Lagrangians, i.e. Lagrangians that are invariant up to a total time derivative. We show how functional Routhian reduction can be seen as a particular instance of reduction of a quasi-invariant Lagrangian, and we exhibit a Routhian reduction procedure for the special case of Lagrangians with quasi-cyclic coordinates. As an application we consider the dynamics of a…
We describe an ansatz for symmetry reduction of the Lane-Emden equation for an arbitrary polytropic index n, admitting only one symmetry generator. For the reduced first order differential equation it is found that standard reduction procedure do not admit any non-trivial Lie point symmetry. However some special solutions for the differential equation are obtained.
We revisit our earlier work on the AKSZ formulation of topological sigma model on generalized complex manifolds, or Hitchin model. We show that the target space geometry geometry implied by the BV master equations is Poisson--quasi--Nijenhuis geometry recently introduced and studied by Stiénon and Xu (in the untwisted case). Poisson--quasi--Nijenhuis geometry is more general than generalized complex geometry and comprises it as a particular case. Next, we show how gauging and reduction can be implemented in the Hitchin model. We find that the geometry resulting form the BV master equation is c…
This paper puts the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian reduction in the framework of shifted symplectic structures developed by Pantev, Toën, Vaquié and Vezzosi. We compute the symplectic structures on mapping stacks and show how the AKSZ topological field theory defined by Calaque allows one to neatly package the constructions used in quasi-Hamiltonian reduction. Finally, we explain how a prequantization of character stacks can be obtained purely locally.
We propose the symmetry reduction method of partial differential equations to the system of differential equations with fewer number of independent variables. We also obtain generalized sufficient conditions for the solution found by conditional symmetry method to be an invariant one in classical sense.
Quasi-symmetry of a steady magnetic field means integrability of first-order guiding-centre motion. Here we derive many restrictions on the possibilities for a quasi-symmetry. We also derive an analogue of the Grad-Shafranov equation for the flux function in a quasi-symmetric magnetohydrostatic field.
We given an elementary illustration of symmetry reduction for central force problems, drawing phase portraits of the reduced dynamics as the intersection of Casimir and energy level sets in three dimensions. These systems form a classic example of symplectic reduction which can usefully be compared to the more-commonly seen case of the free rigid body.
We provide a direct proof for the positivity of Chen-Nester-Tung quasi-local energy with analytic reference in spherical symmetry. A hoop-type theorem for this energy is also established. Finally, the relation between Chen-Nester-Tung and Brown-York quasi-local energies will be discussed.
We construct complete sets of invariant quantities that are integrals of motion for two Hamiltonian systems obtained through a reduction procedure, thus proving that these systems are maximally superintegrable. We also discuss the reduction method used in this article and its possible generalization to other maximally superintegrable systems.
We present classification of Q-conditional symmetries for the two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations and the reductions corresponding to these nonlinear symmetries. Classification of inequivalent reductions is discussed.
In this paper we give a geometric interpretation of a reduction method based on the so called $λ$-variational symmetry (C. Muriel, J.L. Romero and P. Olver 2006 \emph{Variational $C^{\infty}$-symmetries and Euler-Lagrange equations} J. Differential equations \textbf{222} 164-184). In general this allows only a partial reduction but it is particularly suitable for the reduction of variational ODEs with a lack of computable local symmetries. We show that this method is better understood as a nonlocal symmetry-reduction.
This paper describes the notion of σ-symmetry, which extends the one of λ-symmetry, and its application to reduction procedures of systems of ordinary differential equations and of dynamical systems as well. We also consider orbital symmetries, which give rise to a different form of reduction of dynamical systems. Finally, we discuss how dynamical systems can be transformed into higher-order ordinary differential equations, and how these symmetry properties of the dynamical systems can be transferred into reduction properties of the corresponding ordinary differential equations. Many examples …
A reduction procedure for stochastic differential equations based on stochastic symmetries including Girsanov random transformations is proposed. In this setting, a new notion of reconstruction is given, involving the expectation values of functionals of solution to the SDE and a reconstruction theorem for general stochastic symmetries is proved. Moreover, the notable case of reduction under the closed subclass of quasi Doob transformations is presented. The theoretical results are applied to stochastic models relevant in the applications.
We consider the resolution of the N=2 supersymmetric KdV equation with a=-2 (SKdV_{a=-2}) from two approaches, the group invariant method (or symmetry reduction) and the Hirota formalism. A bilinear form of the SKdV_{a=-2} equation is constructed. Links between the two methods are established and new solutions are obtained from both approaches.
We reinforce the observations of almost stable scattering in nonintegrable models and show that $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry can be used as a guiding principle to select relevant systems also when it comes to integrability properties. We show that the presence of unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry in classical field theories produces quasi-integrable excitations with asymptotically conserved charges.
We consider a four-dimensional PDE possessing partner symmetries mainly on the example of complex Monge-Ampère equation (CMA). We use simultaneously two pairs of symmetries related by a recursion relation, which are mutually complex conjugate for CMA. For both pairs of partner symmetries, using Lie equations, we introduce explicitly group parameters as additional variables, replacing symmetry characteristics and their complex conjugates by derivatives of the unknown with respect to group parameters. We study the resulting system of six equations in the eight-dimensional space, that includes CM…
Actions of Lie groups on presymplectic manifolds are analyzed, introducing the suitable comomentum and momentum maps. The subsequent theory of reduction of presymplectic dynamical systems with symmetry is studied. In this way, we give a method of reduction which enables us to remove gauge symmetries as well as non-gauge ``rigid'' symmetries at once. This method is compared with other step-by-step reduction procedures. As particular examples in this framework, we discuss the reduction of time-dependent dynamical systems with symmetry, the reduction of a mechanical model of field theories with g…
This paper contains results on geometric Routh reduction and it is a continuation of a previous paper where a new class of transformations is introduced between Lagrangian systems obtained after Routh reduction. In general, these reduced Lagrangian systems have magnetic force terms and are singular in the sense that the Lagrangian does not depend on some velocity components. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the Routh reduction process itself is entirely captured by the application of such a new transformation on the initial Lagrangian system with symmetry.
Reduced sh-Lie structures have been studied for the case when a Lie group acts on the fibers of a vector bundle while preserving the base space of the bundle. In this paper we investigate how one obtains a reduced sh-Lie structure using the ideas of symmetry reduction where the action of the Lie group is transversal to the fibers of the bundle. We also show how local functionals are reduced using these ideas.
Twisted symmetries, widely studied in the last decade, proved to be as effective as standard ones in the analysis and reduction of nonlinear equations. We explain this effectiveness in terms of a Lie-Frobenius reduction; this requires to focus not just on the prolonged (symmetry) vector fields but on the distributions spanned by these and on systems of vector fields in involution in Frobenius sense, not necessarily spanning a Lie algebra.
We show that the reduction of a planar free spin-1/2 particle system by the constraint fixing its total angular momentum produces the one-dimensional Akulov-Pashnev-Fubini-Rabinovici superconformal mechanics model with the nontrivially coupled boson and fermion degrees of freedom. The modification of the constraint by including the particle's spin with the relative weight $n\in \N$, $n>1$, and subsequent application of the Dirac reduction procedure (`first quantize and then reduce') give rise to the anomaly free quantum system with the order $n$ nonlinear superconformal symmetry constructed re…
This short note completes the symmetry analysis of a class of quasi-linear partial differential equations considered in the previous paper (Nonlinear Dynamics, Vol. 51, 309-316 (2008)): it deals with the presence of an "exceptional" Lie point symmetry, not previously examined, which is admitted only if the involved parameters are fixed by precise relationships. The peculiarity of this symmetry is enhanced by the fact that it leads to a solution relevant in the theory of plasma physics, and also related to the presence of a nontrivial example of a conditional symmetry of weak type.
We consider a deformation of the prolongation operation, defined on sets of vector fields and involving a mutual interaction in the definition of prolonged ones. This maintains the "invariants by differentiation" property, and can hence be used to reduce ODEs satisfying suitable invariance conditions in a fully algorithmic way, similarly to what happens for standard prolongations and symmetries.
It is shown that Bogoliubov quasi-averages select the pure or ergodic states in the ergodic decomposition of the thermal (Gibbs) state. Our examples include quantum spin systems and many-body boson systems. As a consequence, we elucidate the problem of equivalence between Bose-Einstein condensation and the quasi-average spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) discussed for continuous boson systems. The multi-mode extended van den Berg-Lewis-Pulé condensation of type III demonstrates that the only physically reliable quantities are those that defined by Bogoliubov quasi-averages.
We describe the reduction procedure for a symplectic Lie algebroid by a Lie subalgebroid and a symmetry Lie group. Moreover, given an invariant Hamiltonian function we obtain the corresponding reduced Hamiltonian dynamics. Several examples illustrate the generality of the theory.
We examine the reduction process of a system of second-order ordinary differential equations which is invariant under a Lie group action. With the aid of connection theory, we explain why the associated vector field decomposes in three parts and we show how the integral curves of the original system can be reconstructed from the reduced dynamics. An illustrative example confirms the results.
We give a comprehensive analysis of interrelations between the basic concepts of the modern theory of symmetry (classical and non-classical) reductions of partial differential equations. Using the introduced definition of reduction of differential equations we establish equivalence of the non-classical (conditional symmetry) and direct (Ansatz) approaches to reduction of partial differential equations. As an illustration we give an example of non-classical reduction of the nonlinear wave equation in (1+3) dimensions. The conditional symmetry approach when applied to the equation in question yi…
Ansatzes for the Navier-Stokes field are described. These ansatzes reduce the Navier-Stokes equations to system of differential equations in three, two, and one independent variables. The large sets of exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are constructed.
Quadratic systems generated using Yang-Baxter equations are integrable in a sense, but we display a deterioration in the possession of the Painlevé property as the number of equations in each `integrable system' increases. Certain intermediate systems are constructed and also tested for the Painlevé property. The Lie symmetries are also computed for completeness.
The Killingbeck potential consisting of the harmonic oscillator-plus-Cornell potential, is of great interest in high energy physics. The solution of Dirac equation with the Killingbeck potential is studied in the presence of the pseudospin (p-spin) symmetry within the context of the quasi-exact solutions. Two special cases of the harmonic oscillator and Coulomb potential are also discussed.
Given a holomorphic iterated function scheme with a finite symmetry group $G$, we show that the associated dynamical zeta function factorizes into symmetry-reduced analytic zeta functions that are parametrized by the unitary irreducible representations of $G$. We show that this factorization implies a factorization of the Selberg zeta function on symmetric $n$-funneled surfaces and that the symmetry factorization simplifies the numerical calculations of the resonances by several orders of magnitude. As an application this allows us to provide a detailed study of the spectral gap and we observe…
This paper develops the theory of discrete Dirac reduction of discrete Lagrange-Dirac systems with an abelian symmetry group acting on the configuration space. We begin with the linear theory and, then, we extend it to the nonlinear setting using retraction compatible charts. We consider the reduction of both the discrete Dirac structure and the discrete Lagrange-Pontryagin principle, and show that they both lead to the same discrete Lagrange-Poincaré-Dirac equations. The coordinatization of the discrete reduced spaces relies on the notion of discrete connections on principal bundles. At last,…
