We consider the problem of existence of constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on complete intersections of sections of vector bundles. In particular we give general formulas relating the Futaki invariant of such a manifold to the weight of sections defining it and to the Futaki invariant of the ambient manifold. As applications we give a new Mukai-Umemura-Tian like example of Fano 5-fold admitting no Kaehler-Einstein metric and a strong evidence of K-stability of complete intersections on Grassmannians.
The aim of this paper is to solve a uniform version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for polarized toric manifolds. Also, we show a combinatorial sufficient condition for uniform relative K-polystability.
This article is concerned with Chern class and Chern number inequalities on polarized manifolds and nef vector bundles. For a polarized pair $(M,L)$ with $L$ very ample, our first main result is a family of sharp Chern class inequalities. Among them the first one is a variant of a classical result and the equality case of the second one is a characterization of hypersurfaces. The second main result is a Chern number inequality on it, which includes a reverse Miyaoka-Yau type inequality. The third main result is that the Chern numbers of a nef vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold are bo…
The definition of the intersection number of a map with a closed manifold can be extended to the case of a closed stratified set such that the difference between dimensions of its two biggest strata is greater than $1$. The set Sigma of matrices of positive corank is an example of such a set. It turns out that the intersection number of a map from an (n-k+1)--dimensional manifold with boundary into the set of (n x k) real matrices with Sigma coincides with a homotopy invariant associated with a map going to the Stiefel manifold. In a polynomial case, we present an effective method to compute t…
A Finsler metric, whose holomorphic curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant, is constructed on the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds including singularities. Demailly's version of Ahlfors' lemma yields hyperbolicity of the moduli stack.
We show that the moduli space of polarized irreducible symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type, of fixed polarization type, is not always connected. This can be derived as a consequence of Eyal Markman's characterization of polarized parallel-transport operators of $K3^{[n]}$-type.
Based on the method by [Küc95], we give a procedure to list up all complete intersection Calabi--Yau manifolds with respect to direct sums of irreducible homogeneous vector bundles on Grassmannians for each dimension. In particular, we give a classification of such Calabi--Yau 3-folds and determine their topological invariants. We also give alternative descriptions for some of them.
$L^2$ and intersection cohomologies for the reductive representation of the fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds with unipotent local monodromy
We use the correspondence between extremal Sasaki structures and weighted extremal Kahler metrics defined on a regular quotient of a Sasaki manifold, established by the first two authors, and Lahdili's theory of weighted K-stability in order to define a suitable notion of (relative) weighted K-stability for compact Sasaki manifolds of regular type. We show that the (relative) weighted K-stability with respect to a maximal torus is a necessary condition for the existence of a (possibly irregular) extremal Sasaki metric. We also compare weighted K-stability to the K-stability of the correspondin…
Hilbert curves of special varieties like Fano manifolds of low coindex as well as fibrations having such a manifold as general fiber, endowed with appropriate polarizations, are investigated. In particular, all most relevant varieties arising in adjunction theory are characterized in terms of their Hilbert curves.
We study mirror symmetry of a family of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibered by (1,8)-polarized abelian surfaces with Euler characteristic zero. By describing the parameter space globally, we find all expected boundary points (LCSLs), including those correspond to Fourier-Mukai partners. Applying mirror symmetry at each boundary point, we calculate Gromov-Witten invariants ($g\leq2$) and observe nice (quasi-)modular properties in their potential functions. We also describe degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds over each boundary point.
Building on an idea of Borcherds, Katzarkov, Pantev, and Shepherd-Barron (who treated the case $e=14$), we prove that the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of degree $2e$ contains complete curves for all $e\geq 62$ and for some sporadic lower values of $e$ (starting at $14$). We also construct complete curves in the moduli spaces of polarized hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_n$-type for all $n\ge 1$ and polarizations of various degrees and divisibilities.
We consider generalized complete intersection manifolds in the product space of projective spaces, and work out useful aspects pertaining to the cohomology of sheaves over them. First, we present and prove a vanishing theorem on the cohomology groups of sheaves for subvarieties of the ambient product space of projective spaces. We then prove an equivalence between configuration matrices of complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also present a formula of the genus of curves in generalized complete intersection manifolds. Some of these curves arise as the fixed point locus of certain sym…
In the moduli space of polarized varieties the same unpolarized variety can occur multiple times However, for K3 surfaces, compact hyperkähler manifolds, and abelian varieties the number is finite. This may be viewed as a consequence of the Kawamata-Morrison cone conjecture. In this note we provide a proof of this finiteness not relying on the cone conjecture and, in fact, not even on the global Torelli theorem. Instead, it uses the geometry of the moduli space of polarized varieties to conclude the finiteness by means of Baily-Borel type arguments. We also address related questions concerning…
For a smooth family $V \to U$ of polarized manifolds with semi-ample canonical sheaves, we show the following result: any entire curve must be contained in the fibers of the classifying map from the base space $U$ to the moduli space. This settles the Relative Isotriviality Conjecture, \cite[Conjecture 1.5]{DLSZ}.
We provide a general method for computing rational Chow rings of moduli of smooth complete intersections. We specialize this result in different ways: to compute the integral Picard group of the associated stack ; to obtain an explicit presentation of rational Chow rings of moduli of smooth complete intersections of codimension two; to prove old and new results on moduli of smooth curves of genus $\leq 5$ and polarized K3 surfaces of degree $\leq 8$.
Hilbert's 15th problem called for a rigorous foundation of Schubert's calculus, in which a long standing and challenging part is Schubert's problem of characteristics. In the course of securing the foundation of algebraic geometry, Van der Waerden and André Weil attributed the problem to the determination of the intersection theory of flag manifolds. This article surveys the background, content, and resolution of the problem of characteristics. Our main results are a unified formula for the characteristics, and a system description for the intersection rings of flag manifolds. We illustrate th…
The goal of this article is to provide an explicit algorithmic construction of formal $F$-manifold structures, formal Frobenius manifold structures, and higher residue pairings on the primitive middle-dimensional cohomology $\mathbb{H}$ of a smooth projective Calabi-Yau complete intersection variety $X$ defined by homogeneous polynomials $G_1(\underline x), \dots, G_k(\underline x)$. Our main method is to analyze a certain dGBV (differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky) algebra $\mathcal{A}$ obtained from the twisted de Rham complex which computes $\mathbb{H}$. More explicitly, we introduc…
Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau threefold. A conifold transition first contracts $X$ along disjoint rational curves with normal bundles of type $(-1,-1)$, and then smooth the resulting singular complex space $\bar{X}$ to a new compact complex manifold $Y$. Such $Y$ is called a Clemens manifold and can be non-Kähler. We prove that any small smoothing $Y$ of $\bar{X}$ satisfies $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma. We also show that the resulting pure Hodge structure of weight three on $H^3(Y)$ is polarized by the cup product. These results answer some questions of R. Friedman.
The moduli space for polarized hyperkähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[m]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_m$-type with a given polarization type is not necessarily connected, which is a phenomenon that only happens for $m$ large. The period map restricted to each connected component gives an open embedding into the period domain, and the complement of the image is a finite union of Heegner divisors. We give a simplified formula for the number of connected components, as well as a simplified criterion to enumerate the Heegner divisors in the complement. In particular, we show that the image of the peri…
We give a Belyi-type characterisation of smooth complete intersections of general type over $\mathbb{C}$ which can be defined over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. Our proof uses the higher-dimensional analogue of the Shafarevich boundedness conjecture for families of canonically polarized varieties, finiteness results for maps to varieties of general type, and rigidity theorems for Lefschetz pencils of complete intersections.
