The moduli space for polarized hyperkähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[m]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_m$-type with a given polarization type is not necessarily connected, which is a phenomenon that only happens for $m$ large. The period map restricted to each connected component gives an open embedding into the period domain, and the complement of the image is a finite union of Heegner divisors. We give a simplified formula for the number of connected components, as well as a simplified criterion to enumerate the Heegner divisors in the complement. In particular, we show that the image of the period map may be different when restricted to different components of the moduli space.
In the moduli space of polarized varieties the same unpolarized variety can occur multiple times However, for K3 surfaces, compact hyperkähler manifolds, and abelian varieties the number is finite. This may be viewed as a consequence of the Kawamata-Morrison cone conjecture. In this note we provide a proof of this finiteness not relying on the cone conjecture and, in fact, not even on the global Torelli theorem. Instead, it uses the geometry of the moduli space of polarized varieties to conclude the finiteness by means of Baily-Borel type arguments. We also address related questions concerning…
This is an improved version of the eprint previously entitled "Unexpected isomorphisms between hyperkähler fourfolds." We study smooth projective hyperkähler fourfolds that are deformations of Hilbert squares of K3 surfaces and are equipped with a polarization of fixed degree and divisibility. They are parametrized by a quasi-projective irreducible 20-dimensional moduli space and Verbitksy's Torelli theorem implies that their period map is an open embedding. Our main result is that the complement of the image of the period map is a finite union of explicit Heegner divisors that we describe. We…
In this paper, we discuss the cycle theory on moduli spaces $\cF_h$ of $h$-polarized hyperkähler manifolds. Firstly, we construct the tautological ring on $\cF_h$ following the work of Marian, Oprea and Pandharipande on the tautological conjecture on moduli spaces of K3 surfaces. We study the tautological classes in cohomology groups and prove that most of them are linear combinations of Noether-Lefschetz cycle classes. In particular, we prove the cohomological version of the tautological conjecture on moduli space of K3$^{[n]}$-type hyperkähler manifolds with $n\leq 2$. Secondly, we prove the…
A torsion free sheaf on a hyperkähler variety $X$ is modular if the discriminant satisfies a certain condition, for example if it is a multiple of $c_2(X)$ the sheaf is modular. The definition is taylor made for torsion-free sheaves on a polarized hyperkähler variety (X,h) which deform to all small deformations of (X,h). For hyperkählers deformation equivalent to $K3^{[2]}$ we prove an existence and uniqueness result for slope-stable modular vector bundles with certain ranks, $c_1$ and $c_2$. As a consequence we get uniqueness up to isomorphism of the tautological quotient rank $4$ vector bund…
We review a proof of the well know result stating that moduli spaces of stable sheaves with fixed Chern character on a polarized $K3$ surface are deformations of a hyperkähler variety of Type $K3^{[n]}$ (if a suitable numerical hypothesis is satisfied). In a recent work we have adapted that proof in order to prove results on moduli of vector bundles on polarized hyperkähler varieties of Type $K3^{[2]}$ - this is the content of the second part of the paper.

The aim of these notes is to acquaint the reader with important objects in complex algebraic geometry: K3 surfaces and their higher-dimensional analogs, hyperkähler manifolds. These manifolds are interesting from several points of view: dynamical (some have interesting automorphism groups), arithmetical (although we will not say anything on this aspect of the theory), and geometric. It is also one of those rare cases where the Torelli theorem allows for a powerful link between the geometry of these manifolds and lattice theory. We do not prove all the results that we state. Our aim is more to …
On $k$-gonal loci in Severi varieties on general $K3$ surfaces and rational curves on hyperkähler manifolds (first version, superseded by arXiv:1204.4838)
Let $X$ be a projective surface or a hyperkähler manifold and $G \le Aut(X)$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a non-trivial $G$-equivariant fibration on $X$. We also show that two automorphisms $g_i$ of positive entropy and polarized by the same nef divisor are the same up to powers, provided that either $X$ is not an abelian surface or the $g_i$ share at least one common periodic point. The surface case is known among experts, but we treat this case together with the hyperkähler case using the same language of hyperbolic lattice and following Ratcliffe or Ogu…
Beauville and Donagi proved in 1985 that the primitive middle cohomology of a smooth complex cubic fourfold and the primitive second cohomology of its variety of lines, a smooth hyperkähler fourfold, are isomorphic as polarized integral Hodge structures. We prove analogous statements for smooth complex Gushel-Mukai varieties of dimension 4 (resp. 6), i.e., smooth dimensionally transverse intersections of the cone over the Grassmannian Gr(2,5), a quadric, and two hyperplanes (resp. of the cone over Gr(2,5) and a quadric). The associated hyperkähler fourfold is in both cases a smooth double cove…
We study how the degrees of irrationality of moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces grow with respect to the genus $g$. We prove that the growth is bounded by a polynomial function of degree $14+\varepsilon$ for any $\varepsilon>0$ and, for three sets of infinitely many genera, the bounds can be refined to polynomials of degree $10$. The main ingredients in our proof are the modularity of the generating series of Heegner divisors due to Borcherds and its generalization to higher codimensions due to Kudla, Millson, Zhang, Bruinier, and Westerholt-Raum. For special genera, the proof is also buil…
We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on…
