Given a smooth projective curve X, we give effective very ampleness bounds for generalized theta divisors on the moduli spaces $SU_X(r,d)$ and $U_X(r,d)$ of semistable vector bundles of rank r and degree d on X with fixed, respectively arbitrary, determinant.

Very ampleness for Theta on the compactified Jacobian

The Jacobian $J$ of a complete, smooth, connected curve $X$ admits a canonical divisor $Θ$, called the Theta divisor. It is well-known that $Θ$ is ample and, in fact, $3Θ$ is very ample. For a general complete, integral curve $X$, D'Souza constructed a compactification $\bar J$ of the Jacobian $J$ by considering torsion-free, rank 1 sheaves on $X$. Soucaris and the author considered independently the analogous Theta divisor $Θ$ on $\bar J$, and showed that $Θ$ is ample. On a family of surfaces of general type attached to abelian fourfolds and the Weyl group W(E_6)

We study a family of surfaces of general type that arises from the intersections of two translates of the theta divisor on a principally polarized complex abelian fourfold. In particular we determine the Néron-Severi lattices of these surfaces and show that for a general abelian fourfold the monodromy group of the associated variation of Hodge structures is a subgroup of index at most two in the Weyl group W(E_6), whereas for a Jacobian variety it degenerates to a subgroup of the symmetric group S_6.

Abelian varieties associated to Gaussian lattices

We associate to a unimodular lattice L, endowed with an automorphism of square -1, a principally polarized abelian variety A:= L_R/L. We show that the configuration of i-invariant theta divisors of A follows a pattern very similar to the classical theory of theta characteristics; as a consequence we find that A has a high number of vanishing thetanulls. When L = E_8 we recover the 10 vanishing thetanulls of the abelian fourfold discovered by R. Varley.

Remarks on projective normality for certain Calabi-Yau and hyperkähler varieties

We prove some results on effective very ampleness and projective normality for some varieties with trivial canonical bundle. In the first part we prove an effective projective normality result for an ample line bundle on regular smooth four-folds with trivial canonical bundle. More precisely we show that for a regular smooth fourfold with trivial canonical bundle, $A^{\otimes 15}$ is projectively normal for $A$ ample.
