We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while superconductivity is observed at $\simeq$17 K. The superconducting transition has been confirmed from the magnetization and electrical resistivity studies. The $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectrum in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ indicates that the SDW ordering is incommensurate. In the Co-doped sample, a prominent paramagnetic line at 4.2 K is observed indicating a weakening of the SDW state.
We measured the transport properties and susceptibility of single crystals Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$(x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.19 and 0.25). Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy similar to that in Co-doped 122 iron-pnictides is observed although no transition metals were introduced in the FeAs-plane. The in-plane resistivity anisotropy gradually increases with La doping below T$_{SDW}$, being different from the hole-doped 122 superconductors. The susceptibilities of the samples show that La doping leads to suppression of SDW and induces a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at low temperature, which i…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the low energy spin waves in CaFe2As2 show that the magnetic exchange interactions in the Fe layers are exceptionally large and similar to the cuprates. However, the exchange between layers is ~10% of the coupling in the layers and the magnetism is more appropriately categorized as anisotropic three-dimensional, in contrast to the two-dimensional cuprates. Band structure calculations of the spin dynamics and magnetic exchange interactions are in good agreement with the experimental data.
Large single crystals of La-doped CaFe2As2 were successfully synthesized by the FeAs self-flux method. The x-ray diffraction patterns suggest high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. By substitution of trivalent La3+ ions for divalent Ca2+, the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed and a superconducting transition reaches the value of 42.7 K, which is higher than that of about 30 K reported in Saha S. R. et al., arXiv:1105.4798v1. The upper critical field has been determined with the magnetic field along ab-plane and c-axis, yielding an anisotropy…
We report a systematic and ab-initio electronic structure calculation of Ca0.75 M0.25 Fe2 As2 with M = Ca, Sr, Eu, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Na, K, Rb. The recently reported experimentally observed structural trends in rare earths-doped CaFe2 As2 compounds are successfully predicted and a complete theoretical description of the pressure induced orthorhombic to collapsed tetragonal transition is given. We demonstrate that the transition pressure is reduced by electron doping and rises linearly with the ionic size of the dopants. We discuss the implications of our description for the realization o…
In rare-earth doped single crystalline CaFe2As2, the mysterious small volume fraction which superconducts up to 49 K, much higher than the bulk Tc ~ 30s K, has prompted a long search for a hidden variable that could enhance the Tc by more than 30% in iron-based superconductors of the same structure. Here we report a chemical, structural, and magnetic study of CaFe2As2 systematically doped with La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. Coincident with the high Tc phase, we find extreme magnetic anisotropy, accompanied by an unexpected doping-independent Tc and equally unexpected superparamagnetic clusters associated…
Aliovalent rare earth substitution into the alkaline earth site of CaFe2As2 single-crystals is used to fine-tune structural, magnetic and electronic properties of this iron-based superconducting system. Neutron and single crystal x-ray scattering experiments indicate that an isostructural collapse of the tetragonal unit cell can be controllably induced at ambient pressures by choice of substituent ion size. This instability is driven by the interlayer As-As anion separation, resulting in an unprecedented thermal expansion coefficient of $180\times 10^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$. Electrical transport and ma…
High-pressure superconductivity in a rare-earth doped Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 single crystalline sample has been studied up to 12 GPa and temperatures down to 11 K using designer diamond anvil cell under a quasi-hydrostatic pressure medium. The electrical resistance measurements were complemented by high pressure and low temperature x-ray diffraction studies at a synchrotron source. The electrical resistance measurements show an intriguing observation of superconductivity under pressure, with Tc as high as ~51 K at 1.9 GPa, presenting the highest Tc reported in the intermetallic class of 1-2-2 iron…
Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ undergoes successive phase transitions with increasing Rh doping in the $T$ $=$ 0 limit. The antiferromagnetic-metal phase with orthorhombic structure at 0.00 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.020 is driven to a superconducting phase with uncollapsed-tetragonal (ucT) structure at 0.020 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.024; a non-superconducting collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phase takes over at $x$ $\geq$ 0.024. The breakdown of Fermi-liquid transport is observed in the ucT phase above $T_{\rm c}$. In the adjacent cT phase, Fermi-liquid transport is restored along with a disappearance of supercondu…
We report a combined study of the Nernst coefficient (v), Hall effect and thermoelectric power of CaFe2As2 and CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 single crystals. The absolute value of v in both samples is enhanced, probably due to ambipolar flow of electron- and hole-like quasiparticles. The onset of spin-density-wave order in CaFe2As2 causes further rapid rise of the Nernst coefficient. On the contrary, in the CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 crystal we do not see any feature of v(T), which could be clearly associated with SDW fluctuations. In this Co-doped sample there is also no noticeable increase in of v in the vicinit…
The presence of macroscopic phase separation between the superconducting and magnetic phases in \cfcaf is demonstrated by muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements conducted across their phase boundaries (x=0.05-0.15). The magnetic phase tends to retain the high transition temperature (T_m > T_c), while Co-doping induces strong randomness. The volumetric fraction of superconducting phase is nearly proportional to the Co content $x$ with constant superfluid density. These observations suggest the formation of superconducting "islands" (or domains) associated with Co ions in the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers…
We use multi-scale techniques to determine the extent of local inhomogeneity and superconductivity in Ca$_{0.86}$Pr$_{0.14}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal. The inhomogeneity is manifested as a spatial variation of praseodymium concentration, local density of states, and superconducting order parameter. We show that the high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity emerges from clover-like defects associated with Pr dopants. The highest $T_{c}$ is observed in both the tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal phases, and its filamentary nature is a consequence of non-uniform Pr distribution that develops localized…
The transport properties, phase diagram, and dopant distribution are investigated in systematically Nd doped CaFe_2As_2 single crystals. Coexistence of two superconducting (SC) phases with different critical transition temperature (T_c) is observed. The low-T_c phase emerges as x >= 0.031, and the T_c value increases to its maximum value of about 20 K at x = 0.083, the maximum doping level in our study. As x >= 0.060, the high-T_c phase with a T_c value of about 40 K is observed. The structure transition (STr) from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase vanishes suddenly around x = 0.060, where a ne…
We report the detection of unusual superconductivity up to 49 K in single crystalline CaFe2As2 via electron-doping by partial replacement of Ca by rare-earth. The superconducting transition observed suggests the possible existence of two phases: one starting at ~ 49 K, which has a low critical field ~ 4 Oe, and the other at ~ 21 K, with a much higher critical field > 5 T. Our observations are in strong contrast to previous reports of doping or pressurizing layered compounds AeFe2As2 (or Ae122), where Ae = Ca, Sr or Ba. In Ae122, hole-doping has been previously observed to generate superconduct…
We studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure (P) on the structural phase transitions and superconductivity in the ternary and pseudo-ternary iron arsenides CaFe2As2, BaFe2As2, and (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2, by means of measurements of electrical resistivity (rho) in the 1.8 - 300 K temperature (T) range, pressures up to 20 kbar, and magnetic fields up to 9 T. CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2 (lightly doped with Sn) display structural phase transitions near 170 K and 85 K, respectively, and do not exhibit superconductivity in ambient pressure, while K-doped (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2 is superconducting for T < 30 K. …
We performed point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements in Ca(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)2As2 single crystals with effective x=0.060 +- 0.005. The spectra of ab-plane contacts show a zero-bias maximum and broad shoulders at about 5-6 meV. Their fit with the three-dimensional Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model (making use of a analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated from first principles) shows that this compound presents a large isotropic gap on the quasi-2D electronlike Fermi surface sheets and a smaller anisotropic (possibly nodal) gap on the 3D holelike Ferm…
We report the synthesis and basic physical properties of single crystals of CaFe2As2, an isostructural compound to BaFe2As2 which has been recently doped to produce superconductivity. CaFe2As2 crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parameters a = 3.907(4) A and c = 11.69(2) A. Magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity all show a first order phase transition at T_0 171 K. The magnetic susceptibility is nearly isotropic from 2 K to 350 K. The heat capacity data gives a Sommerfeld coefficient of 8.2 +- 0.3 mJ/molK2, and does not reveal any evidence for the presence of hi…
The effects of simultaneous Sb doping on the superconductivity of 112-type Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) were studied through measurements of the magnetization and electrical resistivity. In Sb-free materials, the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the La-doped sample was 35 K, while those of the Pr- and Nd-doped samples were ~10 K; no superconductivity was observed in the Ce-doped sample. Sb doping increased the Tc of all RE-doped samples: Tc increased to 47, 43, 43, and 43 K for RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, respectively. We also found that the enhanced superconductivity resul…
We show that biaxial strain induces alternating tetragonal superconducting and orthorhombic nematic domains in Co substituted CaFe2As2. We use Atomic Force, Magnetic Force and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (AFM, MFM and STM) to identify the domains and characterize their properties, finding in particular that tetragonal superconducting domains are very elongated, more than several tens of micron long and about 30 nm wide, have the same Tc than unstrained samples and hold vortices in a magnetic field. Thus, biaxial strain produces a phase separated state, where each phase is equivalent to what …
In this paper we report the superconductivity above 40 K in the electron doping single crystal Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re = La, Ce, Pr). The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by partial replacement of Ca by rare earth and a superconducting transition reaches as high as 43 K, which is higher than the value in electron doping FeAs-122 compounds by substituting Fe ions with transition metal, even surpasses the highest values observed in hole doping systems with a transition …
We have successfully synthesized the fluoride-arsenide compounds Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF (RE=Nd, Pr; x=0, 0.6). The x-ray powder diffraction confirmed that the main phases of our samples are Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs structure. By measuring resistivity, superconductivity was observed at 57.4 K in Nd-doped and 52.8 K in Pr-doped samples with x=0.6. Bulk superconductivity was also proved by the DC magnetization measurements in both samples. Hall effect measurements revealed hole-like charge carriers in the parent compound CaFeAsF with a clear resistivity anomaly below 118 K, while th…
We report detailed measurements of composition as well as temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in a new series of FeAs compounds with composition CaFe1\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The composition as well as temperature dependence of phonon spectra for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds have been measured using time of flight IN4C and IN6 spectrometers at ILL, France. The comparison of phonon spectra at 300 K in these compounds shows that acoustic phonon modes up to 12 meV harden in the doped compounds in comparison to the parent CaFeAsF. While inter…
TThe parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba), undergo a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in the range 135 to 205K depending on the alkaline earth element. Below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the free standing crystals split into equally populated structural domains, which mask intrinsic, in-plane, anisotropic properties of the materials. Here we demonstrate a way of mechanically detwinning CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The detwinning is nearly complete, as demonstrated by polarized light imaging…
A Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD) experiment has been performed to investigate the structural phase transition and magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF superconductor compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The parent compound CaFeAsF undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at 134(3) K, while the magnetic order in form of a spin-density wave (SDW) sets in at 114(3) K. The antiferromagnetic structure of the parent compound has been determined with a unique propagation vector k = (1,0,1) and the Fe saturation moment of 0.49(5)uB aligned along the long a-axis. With increasing Co doping, the lo…
At ambient pressure CaFe2As2 has been found to undergo a first order phase transition from a high temperature, tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase upon cooling through T ~ 170 K. With the application of pressure this phase transition is rapidly suppressed and by ~ 0.35 GPa it is replaced by a first order phase transition to a low temperature collapsed tetragonal, non-magnetic phase. Further application of pressure leads to an increase of the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition temperature, with it crossing room temperature by ~ 1.7 GPa. …
We investigated the homogeneous coexistence of spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting (SC) states via 75As-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in CaFe(1-x)Co(x)AsF and found that the electronic and magnetic properties of this compound are intermediate between those of LaFeAsO(1-x)F(x) and Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2. For 6% Co-doped samples, the paramagnetic spectral weight completely disappears in the crossover regime between the SDW and SC phases followed by the anomalous behavior of relaxation rate (1/T1), implying that the two phases are not segregated. The 59Co-NMR spectra show that spin momen…
We report a combination of Fe K$β$ x-ray emission spectroscopy and $ab$-intio calculations to investigate the correlation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$. The puzzling temperature behavior of the local moment found in rare earth-doped CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ [\textit{H. Gretarsson, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 047003 (2013)}] is also observed in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. We explain this phenomenon based on first-principles calculations with scaled magnetic interaction. One scaling parameter is sufficient to describe quanti…
The interplay between structural phase and electronic correlations has been an intriguing topic of research. An prominent example is the pressure-induced uncollapsed to collapsed tetragonal phase transition observed in CaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is accompanied with the emergence of superconductivity in the collapsed phase. Recently, a very similar structural phase transition was discovered in LaFe$_2$As$_2$, but in contrast to CaFe$_2$As$_2$, superconductivity was only observed in the uncollapsed phase, not the collapsed phase. Previous studies have attributed this puzzling observation to the diffe…
We present an optical spectroscopy study on P-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ which experiences a structural phase transition from tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase near 75 K. The measurement reveals a sudden reduction of low frequency spectral weight and emergence of a new feature near 3200 \cm (0.4 eV) in optical conductivity across the transition, indicating an abrupt reconstruction of band structure. The appearance of new feature is related to the interband transition arising from the sinking of hole bands near $Γ$ point below Fermi level in the cT phase, as expected from the density func…
Magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phase of CaFe2As2 (T_N=172 K) have been examined by means of inelastic neutron scattering from 180 K (~ 1.05 T_N) up to 300 K (~1.8 T_N). Despite the first-order nature of the magnetic ordering, strong but short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations are clearly observed. These correlations, which consist of quasi-elastic scattering centered at the wavevector Q_{AFM} of the low-temperature AFM structure, are observed up to the highest measured temperature of 300 K and at high energy transfer (E> 60 meV). The L dependence of the scattering implies r…
Temperature dependent measurements of 57Fe Mossbauer spectra on CaFe2As2 single crystals in the tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal phases are reported. Clear features in the temperature dependencies of the isomer shift, relative spectra area and quadrupole splitting are observed at the transition from the tetragonal to the collapsed tetragonal phase. From the temperature dependent isomer shift and spectral area data, an average stiffening of the phonon modes in the collapsed tetragonal phase is inferred. The quadrupole splitting increases by ~25% on cooling from room temperature to ~100 K in …
A well-known feature of CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$-based superconductors is the pressure-induced collapsed tetragonal phase that is commonly ascribed to the formation of an interlayer As-As bond. Using detailed X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, we find that Rh-doped Ca$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ does not undergo a first-order phase transition and that local Fe moments persist despite the formation of interlayer As-As bonds. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that the Fe-As bond geometry is critical for stabilizing magnetism and that the pressure-induced drop in the $c$ lattice p…
Transport measurements along the node and anti-node directions in the a-b plane of optimally doped and epitaxial thin films of YBCO are reported. Low bias magnetoresistance measurements near and below T_c show that the flux flow resistivity along the node and anti-node directions versus magnetic field are indistinguishable. This result suggests that within the experimental error of our measurements, no correspondence is found between the flux pinning properties in YBCO and the d-wave nature of the order parameter.
We report the first ^{75}As-NMR study on a single crystal of the hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{0.7}K_{0.3}Fe_2As_{2} (T_c = 31.5 K). We find that the Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and are weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors. The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures, which is indicative of multiple superconducting gaps, as in the electron-doped Pr(La)FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. Furthermore, no evidence was obtained for a microscopi…
Magnetic measurements on optimally doped single crystals of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ ($x\approx0.35$) with magnetic fields applied along different crystallographic axes were performed under pressure, enabling the pressure evolution of coherence lengths and the anisotropy factor to be followed. Despite a decrease in the superconducting critical temperature, our studies reveal that the superconducting properties become more anisotropic under pressure. With appropriate scaling, we directly compare these properties with the values obtained for BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ as a function o…
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) evidence anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers due to many-body interactions. Most significantly, the scattering rate along the zone boundary saturates for binding energies larger than ~200 meV, while along the diagonal direction it increases nearly linearly with the binding energy in the energy range ~150-500 meV. These results indicate that many-body interactions along the diagonal direction are strong down to the bottom of the band, while along the zone-bounday they become very weak at energies …
The recent discovery and subsequent developments of FeAs-based superconductors have presented novel challenges and opportunities in the quest for superconducting mechanisms in correlated-electron systems. Central issues of ongoing studies include interplay between superconductivity and magnetism as well as the nature of the pairing symmetry reflected in the superconducting energy gap. In the cuprate and RE(O,F)FeAs (RE = rare earth) systems, the superconducting phase appears without being accompanied by static magnetic order, except for narrow phase-separated regions at the border of phase bou…
Detailed behavior of the magnetoresistance (MR) is studied in lightly doped antiferromagnetic La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_{4}, where, thanks to the weak ferromagnetic moment due to spin canting, the antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure can be manipulated by the magnetic field. The MR behavior demonstrates that CuO_2 planes indeed contain anti-phase AF domain boundaries in which charges are confined, forming anti-phase stripes. The data suggest that a high magnetic field turns the anti-phase stripes into in-phase stripes, and the latter appear to give better conduction than the former, which chall…
Momentum resolved inelastic resonant x-ray scattering is used to map the evolution of charge excitations over a large range of energies, momenta and doping levels in the electron doped Mott insulator class Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. As the doping induced AFM-SC (antiferromagnetic-superconducting) transition is approached, we observe an anisotropic softening of collective charge modes over a large energy scale along the Gamma to (π,π)-direction, whereas the modes exhibit broadening ($\sim$ 1 eV) with relatively little softening along Gamma to (π,0) with respect to the parent Mott insulator (x=0).…
We use transport and neutron-scattering measurements to show that a magnetic-field-induced transition from noncollinear to collinear spin arrangement in adjacent CuO_{2} planes of lightly electron-doped Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.01) crystals affects significantly both the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity. In the high-field collinear state, the magnetoresistance (MR) does not saturate, but exhibits an intriguing four-fold-symmetric angular dependence, oscillating from being positive at B//[100] to being negative at B//[110]. The observed MR of more than 30% at low temperatures i…
The collective magnetic excitations in the spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$IrO$_4$ ($x=0,\,0.01,\,0.04,\, 0.1$) were investigated by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We report significant magnon energy gaps at both the crystallographic and antiferromagnetic zone centers at all doping levels, along with a remarkably pronounced momentum-dependent lifetime broadening. The spin-wave gap is accounted for by a significant anisotropy in the interactions between $J_\text{eff}=1/2$ isospins, thus marking the departure of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ from the essentially isotropic Heisenbe…
This paper demonstrates the anisotropic response of quantum critical fluctuations with respect to the direction of the magnetic field $B$ in Ni-doped CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the magnetization $M$ and specific heat $C$. The results show that $M/B$ at $B=0.1\ {\rm T}$ for both the tetragonal $c$ and $a$ directions exhibits $T^{-η}$ dependencies, and that $C/T$ at $B=0$ follows a $-\ln T$ function, which are the characteristics of non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behaviors. For $B\,||\,c$, both the $M/B\propto T^{-η}$ and $C/T \propto -\ln T$ dependencies change into nearly temperature-constant behaviors b…
Based on three general guiding principles, i.e., no double occupancy constraint, accurate description of antiferromagnetism at half-filling, and the precise sign structure of the $t$-$J$ model, a new ground state wave function has been constructed recently [Weng, New J. Phys. 13, 103039 (2011)]. In this paper, we specifically study such kind of variational ground state for the one-hole-doped anisotropic two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder using variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method. The results are then systematically compared with those recently obtained by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simul…
The nonlinear normal state diamagnetism reported by Lu Li et al. [Phys. Rev. B 81, 054510 (2010)] is shown to be incompatible with an acclaimed Cooper pairing and vortex liquid above the resistive critical temperature. Instead it is perfectly compatible with the normal state Landau diamagnetism of real-space composed bosons, which describes the nonlinear magnetization curves in less anisotropic cuprates La-Sr-Cu-O (LSCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) as well as in strongly anisotropic bismuth-based cuprates in the whole range of available magnetic fields.
We report high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of the collective spin fluctuations in three compositions of the superconducting cuprate system La2-xSrxCuO4. We have mapped out the excitations throughout much of the 2-D (h,k) Brillouin zone. The spin fluctuations in La2-xSrxCuO4 are found to be fairly well-described by a damped harmonic oscillator model, thus our data allows us to determine the full wavevector dependence of the damping parameter. This parameter increases with doping and is largest along the (h, h) line, where it is peaked near (0.2,0.2). We ha…
The aim of this work is to investigate the temperature dependencies both in CuO2-plane and out-of plane resistivities in electron-doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 for x from 0.135 up to 0.15 in order to analyze the anisotropy of the electrical transport in the process of the evolution from antiferromagnetic (AF) order in underdoped region to superconducting (SC) order in optimally doped region.
We numerically calculate the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (Rs) in the superconducting state in terms of anisotropic s-wave gaps. By taking into account electron-phonon coupling, our calculated Rs for a conventional s-wave superconductor, indium, is in quantitative agreement with the experimental data with a clear Hebel-Slichter peak. In contrast, by using the highly anisotropic s-wave gaps inferred from the magnetic penetration depth and scanning tunneling microscopy, our calculated Rs curves for electron-doped Pr_{0.91}LaCe_{0.09}CuO_{4-y} show no Hebel-Slichter peak, in agreement wit…
Spin-resonance modes (SRM) are taken as evidence for magnetically driven pairing in Fe-based superconductors, but their character remains poorly understood. The broadness, the splitting and the spin-space anisotropies of SRMs contrast with the mostly accepted interpretation as spin excitons. We study hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ that displays a spin reorientation transition. This reorientation has little impact on the overall appearance of the resonance excitations with a high-energy isotropic and a low-energy anisotropic mode. However, the strength of the anisotropic low-energy mod…
The anisotropic properties of an optimally doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-δ} single crystal have been studied both below and above the critical temperature Tc via the resistivity measurement in magnetic field H up to 12 T. By scaling the conductivity fluctuation around the superconducting transition, the upper critical field H_{c2}(T) has been determined for field parallel to the c-axis or to the basal ab-plane. The anisotropy factor γ={H_c2||ab}/{H_c2||c} is estimated to be about 8. In the normal state (50=<T=<180 K), the magnetoresistance (MR) basically follows an H^2 dependence and for H||c…
Magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, neutron and x-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the properties of single crystalline CaFe2-xNixAs2 as a function of Ni doping for x varying from 0 to 0.1. The combined first-order structural and magnetic phase transitions occur together in the undoped system at 172 K, with a small decrease in the area of the a-b plane along with an abrupt increase in the length of the c-axis in the orthorhombic phase. With increasing x the ordered moment and transition temperature decrease, but the transition remains sharp at modest doping…
The superconducting fluctuations well inside the normal state of Fe-based superconductors were experimentally studied through the in-plane paraconductivity in several high-quality optimally-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ crystals. These measurements were performed in magnetic fields with amplitudes up to 14 T, and different orientations relative to the crystals c axis (0, 53 and 90 degrees). The results allowed a stringent check of the applicability of a recently proposed Ginzburg-Landau approach for the fluctuation electrical conductivity of 3D anisotropic materials in presence of finite appl…
The recent experiments revealed a remarkable possibility for the absence of the disparity between the phase diagrams of the electron- and hole-doped cuprate superconductors, while such an aspect should be also reflected in the dressing of the electrons. Here the phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors and the related exotic features of the anisotropic dressing of the electrons are studied based on the kinetic-energy driven superconductivity. It is shown that although the optimized Tc in the electron-doped side is much smaller than that in the hole-doped case, the electron- …
Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-$T_c$ cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the "weak" pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the "strong" pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical …
An angle-resolved photoemission study of the scattering rate in the superconducting phase of the high-temperature superconductor \LSCO\ with $x=0.145$ and $x=0.17$, as a function of binding energy and momentum, is presented. We observe that the scattering rate scales linearly with binding energy up to the high-energy scale $E_1\sim0.4$ eV. The scattering rate is found to be strongly anisotropic, with a minimum along the (0,0)-($π,π$) direction. A possible connection to a quantum-critical point is discussed.
We present superconducting properties of single crystalline Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ by measuring magnetization, resistivity, upper critical field, Hall coefficient, and magneto-optical images. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail hysteresis loop at high temperatures and relatively high critical current density above $J_{c}=10^{5}$ A/cm$^{2}$ at low temperatures. Upper critical field determined by resistive transition is anisotropic with anisotropic parameter $\sim$ 3.5. Hall effect measurements indicate that Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is a multiband system…
We use inelastic neutron scattering with spin polarization analysis to study the magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of YBa2Cu3O6.9. Polarization analysis allows us to determine the spin polarization of the magnetic excitations and to separate them from phonon scattering. In the normal state, we find unambiguous evidence of magnetic excitations over the 10-60meV range of the experiment with little polarization dependence to the excitations. In the superconducting state, the magnetic response is enhanced near the "resonance energy" and above. At lower energies, 10<E<30…
Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were investigated in the normal states of the parent ($x = 0$), under-doped ($x = 0.04$) and optimally-doped ($x = 0.06$) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals using inelastic neutron scattering technique. For all the doping levels, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations were observed as a broad peak localized at ${\it Q} = (1/2, 1/2, l)$. At lower energies, the peak shows an apparent anisotropy in the $hk0$ plane; longitudinal peak widths are considerably smaller than transverse widths. The anisotropy is larger for the higher doping l…
