TThe parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba), undergo a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in the range 135 to 205K depending on the alkaline earth element. Below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the free standing crystals split into equally populated structural domains, which mask intrinsic, in-plane, anisotropic properties of the materials. Here we demonstrate a way of mechanically detwinning CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The detwinning is nearly complete, as demonstrated by polarized light imaging and synchrotron $X$-ray measurements, and reversible, with twin pattern restored after strain release. Electrical resistivity measurements in the twinned and detwinned states show that resistivity, $ρ$, decreases along the orthorhombic $a_{o}$-axis but increases along the orthorhombic $b_{o}$-axis in both compounds. Immediately below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the ratio $ρ_{bo}/ ρ_{ao}$ = 1.2 and 1.5 for Ca and Ba compounds, respectively. Contrary to CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ reveals an anisotropy in the nominally tetragonal phase, suggesting that either fluctuations play a larger role above $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ than in CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, or that there is a higher temperature crossover or phase transition.
Starting from the orthorhombic magnetically ordered phase, we investigate the effects of uniaxial tensile and compressive stresses along a, b, and the diagonal a+b directions in BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2 in the framework of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and a phenomonological Ginzburg-Landau model. While -contrary to the application of hydrostatic or c-axis uniaxial pressure- both systems remain in the orthorhombic phase with a pressure-dependent nonzero magnetic moment, we observe a sign-changing jump in the orthorhombicity at a critical uniaxial pressure, accompanied by a reversal of…
We have studied an effect of uniaxial strain to the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of intersite bipolarons within the framework of Extended Holstein-Hubbard model. Uniaxial lattice strains are taken into an account by introducing a generalized density-displacement type force for electron-lattice interaction. Associating the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ with the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation $T_{BEC}$ of intersite bipolarons we have calculated strain derivatives of $T_{BEC}$ and satisfactorily explained the results of the experiments on La-based high-$T_c$ f…
Shortly after the discovery of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, spin-triplet pairing was proposed and further corroborated by a constant Knight shift ($K$) across the transition temperature (T$_c$). However, a recent experiment observed a drop in $K$ at T$_c$ which becomes larger under uniaxial strain, ruling out several spin-triplet scenarios. Here we show that inter-orbital spin-triplet pairing features a d-vector that rotates when uniaxial strain is applied, leading to a larger drop in the spin polarization perpendicular to the strain direction, distinct from spin-singlet pairing. We pro…
A universal approach is proposed to study the influence of strain (pressure) on the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of intersite bipolarons within the extended Holstein model. It is shown that uniaxial strain (pressure) derivatives of the temperature of such a Bose-Einstein condensation strongly depend on the arrangement of ions in the lattice. In particular, they may be positive or negative. A connection between the theoretically obtained results, along with the experimental data, on the influence of uniaxial pressure (strain) on $T_c$ of RBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ family cuprates is di…
We report neutron scattering experiments probing the influence of uniaxial strain on both the magnetic and structural order parameters in the parent iron pnictide compound, BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Our data show that modest strain fields along the in-plane orthorhombic b-axis can affect significant changes in phase behavior simultaneous to the removal of structural twinning effects. As a result, we demonstrate in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ samples detwinned via uniaxial strain that the in-plane C$_4$ symmetry is broken by \textit{both} the structural lattice distortion \textit{and} long-range spin ordering at temp…
The effect of uniaxial pressure on superconductivity was examined for a high-Tc cuprate La1.64Eu0.2Sr0.16CuO4, which is located at the boundary between the superconducting and stripe phases. We found remarkably large anisotropy of the uniaxial pressure effect not only between the in-plane and out-of-plane pressures but also within the CuO2-plane. When the pressure is applied along the tetragonal [110] direction, we found the largest pressure effect ever observed in cuprates, dTc/dP - 2.5 K/kbar, while the change of Tc was not appreciable when applied along [100]. This substantial in-plane anis…
In the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, multiple orbitals participate in the superconducting state, enabling different gap structures to be realized in distinct materials. Here we argue that the spectral weights of these orbitals can in principle be controlled by a tetragonal symmetry-breaking uniaxial strain, due to the enhanced nematic susceptibility of many iron-based superconductors. By investigating multi-orbital microscopic models in the presence of orbital order, we show that not only $T_{c}$ can be enhanced, but pairs of accidental gap nodes can be annihilated and created in the Fermi…
In this paper we report the impact of uniaxial strain $\varepsilon$ applied along the crystalline $a$ axis on the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. At ambient conditions, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ shows a charge-density wave (CDW) transition at $T_{\rm CDW}=94.5$ K and superconducts below $T_C = 3.34$ K. In our study, when the uniaxial strain $\varepsilon$ is varied from $-0.90\%$ to $0.90\%$, $T_C$ monotonically increases by $\sim 33\%$ from 3.0 K to 4.0 K, giving rise to the empirical relation $T_C (\varepsilon)=3.4+0.56\varepsilon+0.12\varepsilon^2$. On the other hand, for $\varepsi…
We analyze the effects of chemical pressure induced by alkali metal substitution and uniaxial strain on magnetism in the A2Cr3As3 (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs) family of ternary arsenides with quasi-one dimensional structure. Within the framework of the density functional theory, we predict that the non-magnetic phase is very close to a 3D collinear ferrimagnetic state, which realizes in the regime of moderate correlations, such tendency being common to all the members of the family with very small variations due to the different interchain ferromagnetic coupling. We uncover that the stability of such i…
The quest to understand correlated electronic systems has pushed the frontiers of experimental measurements toward the development of new experimental techniques and methodologies. Here we use a novel home-built uniaxial-strain device integrated into our variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope that enables us to controllably manipulate in-plane uniaxial strain in samples and probe their electronic response at the atomic scale. Using scanning tunneling microscopy with spin-polarization techniques, we visualize antiferromagnetic domains and their atomic structure in Fe1+yTe samples, t…
Within the framework of the density functional theory, we calculate the electronic structure of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ at 8K and room temperature at ambient pressure and with uniaxial strain along the $a$- and $b$-axes. We confirm the existence of anisotropic Dirac cone dispersion near the chemical potential. We also extract the orthogonal tight-binding parameters to analyze physical properties. An investigation of the electronic structure near the chemical potential clarifies that effects of uniaxial strain along the a-axis is different from that along the b-axis. The carrier densities show …
We present first-principles results on the magnetoelastic coupling in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and uncover a striking dependence of the magnetic coupling constants on strain effects. Different magnetic interactions are found to respond very unequally to variations in the lattice, with the Kitaev interaction being the most sensitive. Exact diagonalization results on our magnetoelastic model reproduce recent measurements of the structural Grüneisen parameter and explain the origin of the negative magnetostriction of $α$-RuCl$_3$, disentangling contributions related to different anisotropic interactions and …
We study uniaxially strained graphene under the influence of non-uniform magnetic fields perpendicular to the material sample with a coordinate independent strain tensor. For that purpose, we solve the Dirac equation with anisotropic Fermi velocity and explore the conditions upon which such an equation possesses a supersymmetric structure in the quantum mechanical sense through examples. Working in a Laudau-like gauge, wave functions and energy eigenvalues are found analytically in terms of the magnetic field intensity, the anisotropy scales and other relevant parameters that shape the magneti…
Pressure represents a clean tuning parameter for traversing the complex phase diagrams of interacting electron systems and as such has proved of key importance in the study of quantum materials. Application of controlled uniaxial pressure has recently been shown to more than double the transition temperature of the unconventional superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ for example, leading to a pronounced peak in $T_\mathrm{c}$ vs. strain whose origin is still under active debate. Here, we develop a simple and compact method to apply large uniaxial pressures passively in restricted sample environment…
The effect of uniaxial strain on the photoconduction $δG$ and low-temperature Ohmic conduction $G$ of Peierls conductor o-TaS$_3$ have been studied. Four-contact structure on the base of high-quality o-TaS$_3$ crystal, containing a segment with a strain (1 \%) and one without it, separated by a buffer part, has been prepared for the study. Notable changes both $G(T)$ and $δG(T)$ have been observed below $T < 60$~K under uniaxial strain, namely: a plateau of $G(T)$ in the region of activation-law-change becomes wider under the strain, and an additional low-temperature maximum of $δG(T)$ appears…
The effects of uniaxial strain on the structural, orbital, optical, and magnetic properties of LaMnO_3 are calculated using a general elastic energy expression, along with a tight-binding parameterization of the band theory. Tensile uniaxial strain of the order of 2 % (i.e., of the order of magnitude of those induced in thin films by lattice mismatch with substrates) is found to lead to changes in the magnetic ground state, leading to dramatic changes in the band structure and optical conductivity spectrum. The magnetostriction effect associated with the Neel transition of bulk(unstrained) LaM…
Decoupling the effects of geometry and nature of strain in LaMnO$_3$: Interplay of dynamic correlations and uniaxial strain driving magnetic phase transitions
The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of armchair graphene nanoribbons under a local uniaxial tension are investigated by using first principles quantum transport calculations. It is shown that for a given value of bias-voltage, the resulting current depends strongly on the applied tension. The observed trends are explained by means of changes in the band gaps of the nanoribbons due to the applied uniaxial tension. In the course of plastic deformation, the irreversible structural changes and derivation of carbon monatomic chains from graphene pieces can be monitored by two-probe transport …
Strain is ubiquitous in solid-state materials, but despite its fundamental importance and technological relevance, leveraging externally applied strain to gain control over material properties is still in its infancy. In particular, strain control over the diverse phase transitions and topological states in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) remains an open challenge. Here, we exploit uniaxial strain to stabilize the long-debated structural ground state of the 2D topological semimetal IrTe$_2$, which is hidden in unstrained samples. Combined angle-resolved photoemissi…
Recent experiments on Kondo insulator SmB6 have revealed bulk excitations that could be Fermions without charge. This would lead to a residual linear term in the thermal conductivity that was not observed universally in experiments. To solve this mystery, we introduce a novel symmetric geometry for performing thermal transport measurements under strains. Magnetic-field-independent residual linear terms were found in flux-grown SmB6 at nominal zero strain, and they grew under a tensile strain, which is known to modify Sm valence. A small growth-dependent difference in the Sm valence might expla…
We investigate the effect of an applied uniaxial strain on the ferromagnetic instability due to long- range Coulomb interaction between Dirac fermions in graphene. In case of undeformed graphene the ferromagnetic exchange instability occurs at sufficiently strong interaction within the Hartree- Fock approximation. In this work we show that using the same theoretical framework but with an additional applied uniaxial strain, the transition can occur for much weaker interaction, within the range in suspended graphene. We also study the consequence of strain on the formation of localized magnetic …
Magnetic skyrmions in chiral-lattice ferromagnets are currently attracting enormous research interest because of their potential applications in spintronic devices. However, they emerge in bulk specimens only in a narrow window of temperature and magnetic field. This limited stability regime is recognized as an obstacle to technical applications. Recent experiments demonstrated that the thermodynamic stability of magnetic skyrmions is enhanced or suppressed by the application of a uniaxial strain depending on its axial direction in bulk chiral-lattice ferromagnets MnSi [Y. Nii et al., Nat. Com…
Various new phenomena emerge in quantum materials under elastic deformations, such as hydrostatic or uniaxial stresses. In particular, using uniaxial strain or stress can help to tune or uncover specific structural or electronic orders in materials with multiple coexisting phases. Those phases may be associated with a quantum phase transition requiring a millikelvin environment combined with multiple experimental probes. Here, we describe our unique apparatus, which allows in situ tuning of strain in large samples inside a dilution refrigerator while the samples are monitored via an optical mi…
The perovskite rare-earth titanates are model Mott insulators with magnetic ground states that are very sensitive to structural distortions. These distortions couple strongly to the orbital degrees of freedom and, in principle, it should be possible to tune the superexchange and the magnetic transition with strain. We investigate the representative system (Y,La,Ca)TiO$_3$, which exhibits low crystallographic symmetry and no structural instabilities. From magnetic susceptibility measurements of the Curie temperature, we demonstrate direct, reversible and continuous control of ferromagnetism by …
Nematic states are characterized by rotational symmetry breaking without translational ordering. Recently, nematic superconductivity, in which the superconducting gap spontaneously lifts the rotational symmetry of the lattice, has been discovered. However the pairing mechanism and the mechanism determining the nematic orientation remain unresolved. A first step is to demonstrate control of the nematicity, through application of an external symmetry-breaking field, to determine the sign and strength of coupling to the lattice. Here, we report for the first time control of the nematic orientatio…
The iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a rich phase diagram reflecting a complex interplay between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom [1-4]. The nematic state observed in many of these compounds epitomizes this complexity, by entangling a real-space anisotropy in the spin fluctuation spectrum with ferro-orbital order and an orthorhombic lattice distortion [5-7]. A more subtle and much less explored facet of the interplay between these degrees of freedom arises from the sizable spin-orbit coupling present in these systems, which translates anisotropies in real space …
Multiferroic properties of orthorhombic HoMnO3 (Pbnm space group) are significantly modified by epitaxial compressive strain along the a-axis. We are able to focus on the effect of strain solely along the a-axis by using an YAlO3 (010) substrate, which has only a small lattice mismatch with HoMnO3 along the other in-plane direction (the c-axis). Multiferroic properties of strained and relaxed HoMnO3 thin films are compared with those reported for bulk, and are found to differ widely. A relaxed film exhibits bulk-like properties such as a ferroelectric transition temperature of 25 K and an inco…
