Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the low energy spin waves in CaFe2As2 show that the magnetic exchange interactions in the Fe layers are exceptionally large and similar to the cuprates. However, the exchange between layers is ~10% of the coupling in the layers and the magnetism is more appropriately categorized as anisotropic three-dimensional, in contrast to the two-dimensional cuprates. Band structure calculations of the spin dynamics and magnetic exchange interactions are in good agreement with the experimental data.
Neutron scattering measurements were performed to investigate magnetic excitations in a single-crystal sample of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2, a parent compound of a recently discovered family of Fe-based superconductors. In the ordered state, we observe low energy spin-wave excitations with a gap energy of 9.8(4) meV. The in-plane spin-wave velocity v_ab and out-of-plane spin-wave velocity v_c measured at 12 meV are 280(150) and 57(7) meV A, respectively. At high energy, we observe anisotropic scattering centered at the antiferromagnetic wave vectors. This scattering indicates two-dimen…
Single crystals of K0.80Fe1.76Se2.02 were suscessfully grown from a ternary solution. We show that although crystals form when cooling a near stoichiometric melt, crystals are actually growing out of a ternary solution that remains liquid to at least 850 C. We investigated their chemical composition, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility and resistivity, specific heat, thermoelectric power, London penetration depth and flux penetration via magneto-optical imaging. Whereas the samples appear to be homogeneously superconducting at low temperatures, there appears to be a broadened transtion range c…
We report the crystal growth and structural, magnetic, conductivity, and specific heat investigations of Rb(1-x)Fe(2-y)Se2 single crystals with varying stoichiometry prepared by self-flux and Bridgman methods. The system exhibits a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnetic behavior below 400 K. For 1.53 <2-y< 1.6 superconductivity is found, whereas for Fe concentrations 2-y< 1.5 and 2-y> 1.6 insulating and semiconducting behavior is observed, respectively. The sharpest transition to the superconducting state and the highest transition temperature T_c of 32.4 K is found for compositions close to R…
We investigate the anisotropic superconducting and magnetic properties of single-crystal RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ using magnetotransport and magnetization measurements. We determine a magnetic ordering temperature of the Eu-moments of $T_m$ = 15 K and a superconducting transition temperature of $T_c$ = 36.8 K. The superconducting phase diagram is characterized by high upper critical field slopes of -70 kG/K and -42 kG/K for in-plane and out-of-plane fields, respectively, and a surprisingly low superconducting anisotropy of $Γ$ = 1.7. Ginzburg-Landau parameters of $κ_c \sim 67$ and $κ_{ab} \sim 108$ in…
Recent Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and elastic neutron scattering experiments have revealed conclusively the presence of static incommensurate magnetism in the field-induced B phase of CeCoIn5. We analyze the NMR data assuming the hyperfine coupling to the In(2) nuclei is anisotropic and simulate the spectra for several different magnetic structures. The NMR data are consistent with ordered Ce moments along the [001] direction, but are relatively insensitive to the direction of the incommensurate wavevector.
The title quasi-1D copper oxides (0=< x =<0.4) were investigated by neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies. Polyhedral CuO4 units in the compounds were found to comprise linear-chains at inter-chain distance of approximately 10 A. The parent chain compound (x = 0), however, shows less anisotropic magnetic behavior above 2 K, although it is of substantially antiferromagnetic (mu_{eff}= 1.85 mu_{B} and Theta_{W} = -46.4 K) spin-chain system. A magnetic cusp gradually appears at about 100 K in T vs chi with the Bi substitution. The cusp (x = 0.4) is fairly characterized by and th…
We report neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of BaFe$_{1.92}$Co$_{0.08}$As$_2$. The magnetic Bragg peak intensity is reduced by 6 % upon cooling through T$_C$. The spin dynamics exhibit a gap of 8 meV with anisotropic three-dimensional (3d) interactions. Below T$_C$ additional intensity appears at an energy of $\sim$4.5(0.5) meV similar to previous observations of a spin resonance in other Fe-based superconductors. No further gapping of the spin excitations is observed below T$_C$ for energies down to 2 meV. These observations suggest the redistribution of spectral weight from …
Thermal conductivity measurements have been performed on the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe down to very low temperature and under magnetic field. In addition to the electronic quasiparticle thermal conductivity, additional contributions to the thermal transport are detected: they are sensitive to the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field, and at low temperature, they display a strong anisotropy with the heat current direction. We identify these contributions as arising from magnetic fluctuations. Detection of such fluctuations on the thermal transport in 3D weak ferromagnets is ver…
Materials with transition metals in triangular lattices are of great interest for their potential combination of strong correlation, exotic magnetism and electronic topology. Kagome nets are of particular importance since the discovery of geometrically frustrated magnetism and topological band structures in crystals like Herbertsmithite and Fe3Sn2, respectively. KV3Sb5 was discovered to be a layered topological metal with a Kagome net of vanadium. Here, we fabricated Josephson Junctions (JJ) of K1-xV3Sb5 and induced superconductivity over long junction lengths. Through magnetoresistance and cu…
A quasi-one dimensional magnetism was discovered in the post-perovskite CaRuO3 (Ru4+: 4d4, Cmcm), which is iso-compositional with the perovskite CaRuO3 (Pbnm). An antiferromagnetic spin-chain function with -J/kB = 350 K well reproduces the experimental curve of the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature, suggesting long-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The anisotropic magnetism is probably owing to the dyz - 2p- dzx and dzx - 2p- dyz superexchange bonds along a-axis. The Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat is fairly small, 0.16(2) mJ mol-1 K-2, indicating that the magnetism refle…
Like high Tc cuprates, the newly discovered iron based superconductors lie in close proximity to a magnetically ordered parent phase. However, while the magnetic order in parent cuprates is known to derive from a spin-spin local superexchange interaction, a plethora of experiments including neutron scattering have so far been unable to conclusively resolve whether a local moment Heisenberg description applies in parent iron based compounds, or whether magnetism arises from a collective SDW order instability. These two alternatives can in principle be distinguished by measuring the low energy m…
Neutron scattering has played a significant role in characterizing magnetic and structural correlations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ and their connections with superconductivity. Here we review several key aspects of the physics of iron chalcogenide superconductors where neutron studies played a key role. These topics include the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$, where the doping-dependence of structural transitions can be understood from a mapping to the anisotropic random field Ising model. We then discuss orbital-selective Mott physics in the Fe chalcogenide series, where temp…
The magnetic structures adopted by the Fe and Sm sublattices in SmFeAsO have been investigated using element specific x-ray resonant and non-resonant magnetic scattering techniques. Between 110 and 5 K, the Sm and Fe moments are aligned along the c and a directions, respectively according to the same magnetic representation $Γ_{5}$ and the same propagation vector (1, 0, 0.5). Below 5 K, magnetic order of both sublattices change to a different magnetic structure and the Sm moments reorder in a magnetic unit cell equal to the chemical unit cell. Modeling of the temperature dependence for the Sm …
Many physical properties of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors are two-dimensional phenomena derived from their square planar CuO2 building blocks. This is especially true of the magnetism from the copper ions. As mobile charge carriers enter the CuO2 layers, the antiferromagnetism of the parent insulators, where each copper spin is antiparallel to its nearest neighbours1, evolves into a fluctuating state where the spins show tendencies towards magnetic order of a longer periodicity. For certain charge carrier densities, quantum fluctuations are sufficiently suppressed to yield static …
We report the measurements of resistivity and magnetization under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the basal plane, respectively, on a cobalt-doped Eu(Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal. We observed a resistivity drop at $T_c\sim$ 21 K, which shifts toward lower temperatures under external fields, suggesting a superconducting transition. The upper critical fields near $T_c$ show large anisotropy, in contrast with those of other '122' FeAs-based superconductors. Low-field magnetic susceptibility data also show evidence of superconductivity below 21 K. Instead of e…
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study spin excitations in superconducting NaFe0.985Co0.015As (C15) with static antiferromagnetic (AF) order along the a-axis of the orthorhombic structure and NaFe0.935Co0.045As (C45) without AF order. In previous unpolarized INS work, spin excitations in C15 were found to have a dispersive sharp resonance near Er1=3.25 meV and a broad dispersionless mode at Er2=6 meV. Our neutron polarization analysis reveals that the dispersive resonance in C15 is highly anisotropic and polarized along the a- and c-axis, while the dispersionless mode is …
We study the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe at ambient pressure under $ab$-plane magnetic fields $\vec{H}$ which are perpendicular to the ferromagnetic easy axis. It is shown that, by taking into account the Dyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction arising from the zigzag chain crystal structure of UCoGe, we can qualitatively explain the experimentally observed in-plane anisotropy for critical magnetic fields of the paramagnetic transition. Because of this strong dependence on the magnetic field direction, upper critical fields of superconductivity, which is mediated by ferromagnetic spin fluctuat…
Iron telluride (FeTe), a relative of the iron based high temperature superconductors, displays unusual magnetic order and structural transitions. Here we explore the idea that strong correlations may play an important role in these materials. We argue that the unusual orders observed in FeTe can be understood from a picture of correlated local moments with orbital degeneracy, coupled to a small density of itinerant electrons. A component of the structural transition is attributed to orbital, rather than magnetic ordering, introducing a strongly anisotropic character to the system along the dia…
In preceding papers the author proposed a new mechanism of Cooper pair formation that follows within an extended Heisenberg model. The new mechanism operates in narrow, partly filled "superconducting" energy bands of special symmetry and shows resemblances, and also great differences as compared with the familiar BCS mechanism. In the present paper the resulting superconducting state is interpreted as a state in which the spins are ordered within the k space. In this picture, the peculiar features of the new mechanism, as compared with the BCS mechanism, can be understood in a straightforward …
Of all parent compounds of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, EuFe2As2 exhibits by far the largest magnetostructural coupling due to the sizable biquadratic interaction between Eu and Fe moments. While the coupling between Eu antiferromagnetic order and Fe structural/antiferromagnetic domains enables rapid field detwinning, this prevents simple magnetometry measurements from extracting the critical fields of the Eu metamagnetic transition. Here we measure these critical fields by combining x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy with in-situ tunable uniaxial stress and applied…
The emergence of the electron-pocket only iron-based superconductor AxFe2-ySe2 (A = alkali metal) challenges the Fermi-surface nesting picture established in iron-pnictides. It was widely believed that magnetism is correlated with the superconductivity in AxFe2-ySe2. Unfortunately, the highly anisotropic exchange parameters and the disagreement between theoretical calculations and experimental results triggered a fierce debate on the nature of magnetism in AxFe2-ySe2. Here we find that the strong magnetic anisotropy is from the anisotropic biquadratic interaction. In order to accurately obtain…
In- and out-of-plane magnetic penetration depths were measured in three iron-based pnictide superconducting systems. All studied samples of both 122 systems show a robust power-law behavior, $λ(T) T^n$, with the sample-dependent exponent n=2-2.5, which is indicative of unconventional pairing. This scenario could be possible either through scattering in a $s_{\pm }$ state or due to nodes in the superconducting gap. In the Nd-1111 system, the interpretation of data may be obscured by the magnetism of rare-earth ions. The overall anisotropy of the pnictide superconductors is small. The 1111 syste…
We report calculations of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ and discuss the results in terms of the observed superconductivity near magnetism. We find that YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ is a material near a magnetic quantum critical point based on comparison of standard density functional results that predict magnetism with experiment. The band structure and Fermi surfaces are very three dimensional and higher conductivity is predicted in the $c$-axis direction. The magnetism is of Stoner type and is predominately from an in-plane ferromagnetic tendency. The inter-layer couplin…
We study the phase diagram of an SU(3)-symmetric mixture of three-component ultracold fermions with attractive interactions in an optical lattice, including the additional effect on the mixture of an effective three-body constraint induced by three-body losses. We address the properties of the system in $D \geq 2$ by using dynamical mean-field theory and variational Monte Carlo techniques. The phase diagram of the model shows a strong interplay between magnetism and superfluidity. In the absence of the three-body constraint (no losses), the system undergoes a phase transition from a color supe…
