We study the phase diagram of an SU(3)-symmetric mixture of three-component ultracold fermions with attractive interactions in an optical lattice, including the additional effect on the mixture of an effective three-body constraint induced by three-body losses. We address the properties of the system in $D \geq 2$ by using dynamical mean-field theory and variational Monte Carlo techniques. The phase diagram of the model shows a strong interplay between magnetism and superfluidity. In the absence of the three-body constraint (no losses), the system undergoes a phase transition from a color superfluid phase to a trionic phase, which shows additional particle density modulations at half-filling. Away from the particle-hole symmetric point the color superfluid phase is always spontaneously magnetized, leading to the formation of different color superfluid domains in systems where the total number of particles of each species is conserved. This can be seen as the SU(3) symmetric realization of a more general tendency to phase-separation in three-component Fermi mixtures. The three-body constraint strongly disfavors the trionic phase, stabilizing a (fully magnetized) color superfluid also at strong coupling. With increasing temperature we observe a transition to a non-magnetized SU(3) Fermi liquid phase.
We study magnetic phases of two-component mixtures of ultracold fermions with repulsive interactions in optical lattices in the presence of hopping imbalance. Our analysis is based on dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and its real-space generalization at finite temperature. We study the temperature dependence of the transition into the ordered state as a function of the interaction strength and the imbalance parameter in two and three spatial dimensions. We show that below the critical temperature for Néel order mass-imbalanced mixtures also exhibit a charge-density wave, which provides a dir…
We consider two species of bosons in one dimension near the Tonks-Girardeau limit of infinite interactions. For the case of equal masses and equal intraspecies interactions, the system can be mapped to a S=1/2 XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, thus allowing one to access different magnetic phases. Using a powerful ansatz developed for the two-component Fermi system, we elucidate the evolution from few to many particles for the experimentally relevant case of an external harmonic confinement. In the few-body limit, we already find clear evidence of both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin correla…
A mixture of two kinds of identical bosons, species $1$ and species $2$, held in a harmonic potential and interacting by harmonic intra-species and inter-species particle-particle interactions is discussed. To prove Bose-Einstein condensation of the mixture three steps are needed. First, we integrate the all-particle density matrix, employing a four-parameter matrix recurrence relations, down to the lowest-order intra-species and inter-species reduced density matrices of the mixture. Second, the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (mean-field) equations of the mixture are solved analytically. Third, we a…
In the present work we discuss inter-species entanglement in Bose-Bose mixtures trapped in optical lattices. This work is motivated by the observation that, in the presence of a second component, the Mott-insulator lobe shifts {\em{differently}} on the hole- and particle-side with respect to the Mott lobe of the single species system (Phys. Rev. A 82, 021601, Laser Phys. 21, 1443). We use perturbation theory, formulated in a Hilbert space decomposed by means of lattice symmetries, in order to show that the nonuniform shift of the Mott lobe is a consequence of an inter-species entanglement whic…
The superfluid mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi species is a remarkable many-body quantum system. Dilute degenerate atomic gases, especially for two species of distinct masses, are excellent candidates for exploring fundamental features of superfluid mixture. However, producing a mass-imbalance Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, providing an unambiguous visual proof of two-species superfluidity and probing inter-species interaction effects remain challenging. Here, we report the realization of a two-species superfluid of lithium-6 and potassium-41. By rotating the dilute gases, we observe the…
We study theoretically potential advantages of two-component mixtures in optical lattices with state-dependent tunneling for approaching long-range-order phases and detecting easy-axis antiferromagnetic correlations. While we do not find additional advantages of mixtures with large hopping imbalance for approaching quantum magnetism in a harmonic trap, it is shown that a nonzero difference in hopping amplitudes remains highly important for a proper symmetry breaking in the pseudospin space for the single-site-resolution imaging and can be advantageously used for a significant increase of the s…
We investigate the ground-state properties of a dual-species spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate. One of the species is subjected to a pair of Raman laser beams that induces spin-orbit (SO) coupling, whereas the other species is not coupled to the Raman laser. In certain limits, analytical results can be obtained. It is clearly shown that, through the inter-species spin-exchange interaction, the second species also exhibits SO coupling. This mixture system displays a very rich phase diagram, with many of the phases not present in an SO coupled single-species condensate. Our work provides a new w…
Quantum degenerate mixtures of alkali and spin-singlet atoms form the starting point for studying few- and many-body physics of mass-imbalanced pairs as well as the production of paramagnetic polar molecules. We recently reported the achievement of dual-species quantum degeneracy of a mixture of lithium and ytterbium atoms. Here we present details of the key experimental steps for the all-optical preparation of these mixtures. Further we demonstrate the use of the magnetic field gradient tool to compensate for the differential gravitational sag of the two species and control their spatial over…
Motivated by recent experiments on two-component systems, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a mixture of two bosonic species by means of path-integral quantum Monte Carlo by the two-worm algorithm. The mixture is trapped in a square lattice at half-filling conditions. Various quantum phases are stabilized depending on the interplay between intra- and inter-species interactions. We show that the phase diagram features a demixed superfluid phase and demixed Mott-Insulator phase when the inter-species interaction becomes greater than the intra-species repulsion, and a double-superf…
We study the properties of dilute bosons immersed in a single component Fermi sea across a broad boson-fermion Feshbach resonance. The stability of the mixture requires that the bare interaction between bosons exceeds a critical value, which is a universal function of the boson-fermion scattering length, and exhibits a maximum in the unitary region. We calculate the quantum depletion, momentum distribution and the boson contact parameter across the resonance. The transition from condensate to molecular Fermi gas is also discussed.
We investigate the tunneling properties of a two-species few-boson mixture in a one-dimensional triple well and harmonic trap. The mixture is prepared in an initial state with a strong spatial correlation for one species and a complete localization for the other species. We observe a correlation-induced tunneling process in the weak interspecies interaction regime. The onset of the interspecies interaction disturbes the spatial correlation of one species and induces tunneling among the correlated wells. The corresponding tunneling properties can be controlled by the spatial correlations with a…
In an article in 2007, Mishra, Pai, and Das [Phys. Rev. A 76, 013604 (2007)] investigated the two-component Bose-Hubbard model using the numerical DMRG procedure. In the regime of inter-species repulsion $U^{ab}$ larger than the intra-species repulsion $U$, they found a transition from a uniform miscible phase to phase-separation occurring at a finite value of $U$ , e.g., at around $U = 1.3$ for $Δ= U^{ab}/U = 1.05$ and $ρ_{a} = ρ_{b} = 1/2$. In this comment, we show that this result is not correct and in fact the two-component Bose-Hubbard model is unstable to phase-separation for any $U^{ab}…
We study the ground-state properties and quantum dynamics of few-boson mixtures with strong inter-species repulsion in one-dimensional traps. If one species localizes at the center, e.g., due to a very large mass compared to the other component, it represents an effective barrier for the latter and the system can be mapped onto identical bosons in a double well. For weaker localization, the barrier atoms begin to respond to the light component, leading to an induced attraction between the mobile atoms that may even outweigh their bare intra-species repulsion. To explain the resulting effects, …
We explore the tunneling dynamics of strongly correlated bosonic mixtures in a one-dimensional double-well. The role of the inter- and intra-species interactions and their interplay is investigated using the numerically exact Multi-Configuration Time dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The dynamics is studied for three initial configurations: complete and partial population imbalance and a phase separated state. Increasing the inter-species interaction leads to a strong increase of the tunneling time period analogous to the quantum self-trapping for condensates. The intra-species repulsion can s…
We consider a mixture of two species of spin-1 atoms with interspecies spin exchange, which may cooperate or compete with the intraspecies spin exchanges and thus dramatically affect the ground state. It represents a new class of bosonic gases differing from single-species spinor gases. We determine the exact ground states in several parameter regimes, and study the composite structures by using the generating function method generalized here to be applicable to a mixture of two species of spinor gases. The most interesting phase is the so-called entangled Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), whi…
We develop a low energy effective field theory of a mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 atoms with interspecies spin-exchange, in addition to density-density interaction. This approach is beyond the single orbital-mode approximation. In a wide parameter regime, it indicates the existence of the four elementary excitations, especially a gapped mode due to interspecies spin-exchange. On the other hand, the spectrum of the effective spin Hamiltonian yielded by the single mode approximation can be obtained by quantizing the homogeneous excitation, which is spin excitation and is the long-wave…
In a mixture of two kinds of identical bosons there are two types of pairs, identical bosons' pairs, of either species, and pairs of distinguishable bosons. In the present work fragmentation of pairs in a trapped mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated using a solvable model, the symmetric harmonic-interaction model for mixtures. The natural geminals for pairs made of identical or distinguishable bosons are explicitly contracted by diagonalizing the intra-species and inter-species reduced two-particle density matrices, respectively. Properties of pairs' fragmentation in the mixture…
We report on the realization of a mixture of fermionic $^{161}$Dy and fermionic $^{40}$K where both species are deep in the quantum-degenerate regime. Both components are spin-polarized in their absolute ground states, and the low temperatures are achieved by means of evaporative cooling of the dipolar dysprosium atoms together with sympathetic cooling of the potassium atoms. We describe the trapping and cooling methods, in particular the final evaporation stage, which leads to Fermi degeneracy of both species. Analyzing cross-species thermalization we obtain an estimate of the magnitude of th…
We investigate the formation of discrete breathers (DBs) and the dynamics of the mixture of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in open boundary optical lattices using the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The results show that the coupling of intra- and interspecies interaction can lead to the existence of pure single-species DBs and symbiotic DBs (i.e., two-species DBs). Furthermore, we find that there is a selective distillation phenomenon in the dynamics of the mixture of two-species BECs. One can selectively distil one species from the mixture of two-species BECs and can …
We study a Bose-Fermi mixture within the framework of the mean-field theory, including three possible regimes for the fermionic species: fully polarized, BCS, and unitarity. Starting from the 3D description and using the variational approximation (VA), we derive 1D and 2D systems of equations, under the corresponding confining potentials. This method produces a pair of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations coupled to algebraic equations for the transverse widths of the confined state. The equations incorporate interactions between atoms of the same species and between the species, assuming tha…
In this paper we analyze the possibility of persistent currents of a two-species bosonic mixture in the one-dimensional ring geometry. We extend the arguments used by Bloch to obtain a criterion for the stability of persistent currents for the two-species system. If the mass ratio of the two species is a rational number, persistent currents can be stable at multiples of a certain total angular momenta. We show that the Bloch criterion can also be viewed as a Landau criterion involving the elementary excitations of the system. Our analysis reveals that persistent currents at higher angular mome…
Ultracold quantum gases confined in three-dimensional bubble traps are promising tools for exploring many-body effects on curved manifolds. As an alternative to the conventional technique of radio-frequency dressing, we propose to create such shell-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates in microgravity based on dual-species atomic mixtures and we analyze their properties as well as the feasibility to realize symmetrically filled shells. Beyond similarities with the radio-frequency dressing method as in the collective-excitation spectrum, our approach has several natural advantages like the robustnes…
We have created a quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of 23Na and 40K with widely tunable interactions via broad interspecies Feshbach resonances. Twenty Feshbach resonances between 23Na and 40K were identified. The large and negative triplet background scattering length between 23Na and 40K causes a sharp enhancement of the fermion density in the presence of a Bose condensate. As explained via the asymptotic bound-state model (ABM), this strong background scattering leads to a series of wide Feshbach resonances observed at low magnetic fields. Our work opens up the prospect to create chemic…
We develop and apply the multi-layer multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method for bosons, which represents an ab initio method for investigating the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of multi-species bosonic systems. Its multi-layer feature allows for tailoring the wave function ansatz in order to describe intra- and inter-species correlations accurately and efficiently. To demonstrate the beneficial scaling and the efficiency of the method, we explore the correlated tunneling dynamics of two species with repulsive intra- and inter-species interactions, to which a third species with va…
We study the quantum dynamics of strongly interacting few-boson mixtures in one-dimensional traps. If one species is strongly localized compared to the other (e.g., much heavier), it can serve as an effective potential barrier for that mobile component. Near the limit of infinite localization, we map this to a system of identical bosons in a double well. For realistic localization, the backaction of the light species on the "barrier" atoms is explained--to lowest order--in terms of an induced attraction between these. Even in equilibrium, this may outweigh the bare intra-species interaction, l…
We establish a conceptual framework for the identification and the characterization of induced interactions in binary mixtures and reveal their intricate relation to entanglement between the components or species of the mixture. Exploiting an expansion in terms of the strength of the entanglement among the two species, enables us to deduce an effective single-species description. In this way, we naturally incorporate the mutual feedback of the species and obtain induced interactions for both species which are effectively present among the particles of same type. Importantly, our approach incor…
A mixture of two kinds of identical bosons held in a harmonic potential and interacting by harmonic particle-particle interactions is discussed. This is an exactly-solvable model of a mixture of two trapped Bose-Einstein condensates which allows us to examine analytically various properties. Generalizing the treatment in [Cohen and Lee, J. Math. Phys. {\bf 26}, 3105 (1985)], closed form expressions for the ground-state energy, wave-function, and lowest-order densities are obtained and analyzed for attractive and repulsive intra-species and inter-species particle-particle interactions. A partic…
We consider the mass-imbalanced sensibility for the emergence of vortex patterns in the Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of rubidium-cesium ($^{85}$Rb-$^{133}$Cs), confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic traps, with one species linearly perturbed in one direction. Non-dipolar coupled species are chosen to highlight mass symmetry effects. We first analyze the condensed mixture in the unperturbed non-rotating regime, where radial phase separation is verified in the immiscible regime, which occurs for large ratio between inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions. By going to the li…

We study a two species fermion mixture with different populations on a square lattice modeled by a Hubbard Hamiltonian with on-site inter-species repulsive interaction. Such a model can be realized in a cold atom system with fermionic atoms in two different hyperfine states loaded on an optical lattice and with tunable inter-species interaction strength via external fields. For a two-dimensional square lattice, when at least one of the fermion species is close to half-filling, the system is highly affected by lattice effects. With the majority species near half-filling and varying densities fo…
We present measurements of interspecies Feshbach resonances and subsequent creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{39}\mathrm{K}$. We prepare both optically trapped ensembles in the spin state $\left|f = 1,m_{f}=-1\right\rangle$ and perform atom loss spectroscopy in a magnetic field range from 0 to $700 \, \mathrm{G}$. The observed features include several s-wave poles and a zero crossing of the interspecies scattering length as well as inelastic two-body contributions in the $\mathcal{M} = m_{\mathrm{Na}}+m_{\mathrm{K}} = -2$ submanifold. We identify an…
Motivated by recent realizations of spin-1 NaRb mixtures in the experiments, here we investigate heteronuclear magnetism in the Mott-insulating regime. Different from the identical mixtures where the boson (fermion) statistics only admits even (odd) parity states from angular momentum composition, for heteronuclear atoms in principle all angular momentum states are allowed, which can give rise to new magnetic phases. Various magnetic phases can be developed over these degenerate spaces, however, the concrete symmetry breaking phases depend not only on the degree of degeneracy, but also the com…
It is well known that the supersolid form of matter can arise in a single species of cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to long range interactions. We present a scenario where a supersolid is induced in one of the components of a mixture of two species bosonic atoms where there is no long range interactions. We study a system of normal and hardcore boson mixture with only the former possessing long range interactions. We consider three cases: the first where the total density is commensurate and the other two where they are incommensurate . By suitable choices of the densities and th…
We find nearly all the exact ground states of a mixture of two species of spin-1 atoms with both interspecies and intraspecies spin exchanges in absence of a magnetic field. The quantum phase diagram in the three-dimensional parameter space and its two-dimensional cross sections are described. The boundaries where the ground states are either continuous or discontinuous are determined, with the latter identified as where quantum phase transitions take place. The two species are always disentangled if the interspecies spin coupling is ferromagnetic or zero. Quantum phase transitions occur when …
We investigate dipole modes in a trapped Bose--Fermi mixture gas in the normal phase, composed of single-species bosons and single-species fermions with $s$-wave scattering. In the extremely low temperature regime, Bose--Einstein statistics and Fermi--Dirac statistics may give rise to an interesting temperature dependence of collective modes. Applying the moment method to the linearized Boltzmann equation, we study the transition of the dipole modes between the hydrodynamic regime and the collisionless regime.
We study the mass imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixture within the framework of a two-dimensional lattice fermion model. Based on the thermodynamic and species dependent quasiparticle behavior we map out the finite temperature phase diagram of this system and show that unlike the balanced Fermi superfluid there are now two different pseudogap regimes as PG-I and PG-II. While within the PG-I regime both the fermionic species are pseudogapped, PG-II corresponds to the regime where pseudogap feature survives only in the light species. We believe that the single particle spectral features that we discuss…
Techniques to manipulate the individual constituents of an ultracold mixture are key to investigating impurity physics. In this work, we confine a mixture of the hyperfine ground states of Rb-87 in a double-well potential. The potential is produced by dressing the atoms with multiple radiofrequencies. The amplitude and phase of each frequency component of the dressing field are individually controlled to independently manipulate each species. Furthermore, we verify that our mixture of hyperfine states is collisionally stable, with no observable inelastic loss.
We theoretically address magnetic ordering at zero and finite temperature in both homogeneous and trapped Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices. By using Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous two-component Bose-Hubbard model in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, which features competing magnetic order of XY-ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic type in addition to the Mott and superfluid states. We show that these magnetic phases persist also in the presence of a harmonic trap.
We report the observation of coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics driven by inter-species spin-spin interaction in an ultracold spinor mixture, which manifests as periodical and well correlated spin oscillations between two atomic species. In particular, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the oscillations and find a resonance behavior which depends on {\em both} the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects and the spin-dependent interaction. We also demonstrate a unique knob for controlling the spin dynamics in the spinor mixture with species-dependent vector light shifts. Our finds ar…
We study the ground state phases for a mixture of two atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a weak magnetic (B-) field. The ground state is found to contain a broken-axisymmetry (BA) phase due to competitions among intra- and inter-species spin exchange interactions and the linear Zeeman shifts. This is in contrast to the case of a single species spin- 1 condensate, where the axisymmetry breaking results from competitions among the linear and quadratic Zeeman shifts and the intra-species ferromagnetic interaction. All other remaining ground state phases for the mixt…
We use exact Quantum Monte Carlo techniques to study the properties of quantum droplets in two-component bosonic mixtures with contact interactions in one spatial dimension. We systematically study the surface tension, the density profile and the breathing mode as a function of the number of particles in the droplet and of the ratio of coupling strengths between intra-species repulsion and inter-species attraction. We find that deviations from the predictions of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation are small in most cases of interest.
Strongly interacting one-dimensional quantum systems often behave in a manner that is distinctly different from their higher-dimensional counterparts. When a particle attempts to move in a one-dimensional environment it will unavoidably have to interact and 'push' other particles in order to execute a pattern of motion, irrespective of whether the particles are fermions or bosons. A present frontier in both theory and experiment are mixed systems of different species and/or particles with multiple internal degrees of freedom. Here we consider trapped two-component bosons with short-range inter…
Methods to manipulate the individual constituents of an ultracold quantum gas mixture are essential tools for a number of applications, for example the direct quantum simulation of impurity physics. We investigate a scheme in which species-selective control is achieved using magnetic potentials dressed with multiple radiofrequencies, exploiting the different Landé g-factors of the constituent atomic species. We describe a mixture dressed with two frequencies, where atoms are confined in harmonic potentials with a controllable degree of overlap between the two atomic species. This is then exten…
We report on the production of a $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interspecies interaction and we study the mixture in the attractive regime, i.e. for negative values of the interspecies scattering length $a_{12}$. The binary condensate is prepared in the ground state and confined in a pure optical trap. We exploit Feshbach resonances for tuning the value of $a_{12}$. After compensating the gravitational sag between the two species with a magnetic field gradient, we drive the mixture into the attractive regime. We let the system to evolve both in free space…
In a double-well potential, a Bose-Einstein condensate exhibits Josephson oscillations or self-trapping, depending on its initial preparation and on the ratio of inter-particle interaction to inter-well tunneling. Here, we elucidate the role of the exchange symmetry for the dynamics with a mixture of two distinguishable species with identical physical properties, i.e. which are governed by an isospecific interaction and external potential. In the mean-field limit, the spatial population imbalance of the mixture can be described by the dynamics of a single species in an effective potential with…
We discuss the scaling of the interaction energy with particle numbers for a harmonically trapped two-species mixture at thermal equilibrium experiencing interactions of arbitrary strength and range. In the limit of long-range interactions and weak coupling, we recover known results for the integrable Caldeira-Leggett model in the classical limit. In the case of short-range interactions and for a balanced mixture, numerical simulations show scaling laws with exponents that depend on the interaction strength, its attractive or repulsive nature, and the dimensionality of the system. Simple analy…
Vortex lattice patterns with transitions from regular to other variety vortex shapes are predicted in rotating binary mixtures of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in squared optical lattice. We focus our investigation in the experimentally accessible dipolar isotopes of dysprosium ($^{162,164}$Dy), erbium ($^{168}$Er), chromium ($^{52}$Cr), and rubidium ($^{87}$Rb), by considering the binary mixtures ($^{164}$Dy-$^{162}$Dy, $^{168}$Er-$^{164}$Dy, $^{164}$Dy-$^{52}$Cr and $^{164}$Dy-$^{87}$Rb), which are confined in strong pancake-shaped trap and loaded in squared two-dimensional optica…
We study the localization of a cigar-shaped super-fluid Bose-Fermi mixture in a quasi-periodic bichromatic optical lattice (OL) for inter-species attraction and intra-species repulsion. The mixture is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the bosons, coupled to a hydrodynamic mean-field equation for fermions at unitarity. We confirm the existence of the symbiotic localized states in the Bose-Fermi mixture and Anderson localization of the Bose component in the interacting Bose-Fermi mixture on a bichromatic OL. The phase diagram in boson and fermion numbers showing the regions of the s…
We study density wave instabilities in a doubly-degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ symmetry on a square lattice. For sufficiently large on-site inter-species repulsion, when the two species of fermions are both at half-filling, two conventional ($s$-wave) number density waves are formed with a $π$-phase difference between them to minimize the inter-species repulsion. Upon moving one species away from half-filling, an unconventional density wave with $d_{xy}$-wave symmetry emerges. When both species are away from the vicinity of half-filling, superconducting instabilities d…
This work contains a detailed analysis of the properties of the ground state of a two-component two-sites Bose-Hubbard model, which captures the physics of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a double-well potential. The atom-atom interactions within each species and among the two species are taken as variable parameters while the hopping terms are kept fixed. To characterize the ground state we use observables such as the imbalance of population and its quantum uncertainty. The quantum many-body correlations present in the system are further quantified by studying the deg…
We study degenerate mixtures of "heavy" bosons and "light" superfluid bosons using a variational polaron transformation. We consider the Mott insulator-superfluid transition of the heavy species and find that at $T=0$ interaction favors the superfluid phase of the heavy species. Our analytic results agree well with numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions. We then show that in three dimensions the variational polaron transformation can be combined with a Gutzwiller approximation to give good results.
We present a machine built for experiments with ultracold mixtures of strontium and lithium atoms. The machine includes a science vacuum chamber and the relevant laser systems for cooling and trapping the atoms. With this machine, we realize a D2-line compressed magneto-optical trap (MOT) for ${^6}$Li and a narrow-linewidth 689-nm MOT for $^{84}$Sr, obtaining ~$10^9$ ${^6}$Li atoms at 700 $μ$K and ~$10^7$ $^{84}$Sr atoms at 1.8 $μ$K. Such a dual-species MOT provides an ideal starting point for realizing double degenerate mixtures of $^6$Li and Sr atoms.
We report on the dynamics of thermalization by extending a generalization of the Caldeira-Leggett model, developed in the context of cold atomic gases confined in a harmonic trap, to higher dimensions. Universal characteristics en route to thermalization which appear to be independent of dimensionality are highlighted, which additionally suggest a scaling analogous to turbulent mixing in fluid dynamics. We then focus on features dependent on dimensionality, with particular regard to the role of angular momentum of the two atomic clouds, having in mind the goal of efficient thermalization betwe…
