We study the properties of dilute bosons immersed in a single component Fermi sea across a broad boson-fermion Feshbach resonance. The stability of the mixture requires that the bare interaction between bosons exceeds a critical value, which is a universal function of the boson-fermion scattering length, and exhibits a maximum in the unitary region. We calculate the quantum depletion, momentum distribution and the boson contact parameter across the resonance. The transition from condensate to molecular Fermi gas is also discussed.
We have realized a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and observed their immiscibility. Because of the favorable background intra- and inter-species scattering lengths, stable condensates can be obtained via efficient evaporative cooling and sympathetic cooling without the need for fine tuning of the interactions. Our system thus provides a clean platform for studying inter-species interactions driven effects in superfluid mixtures. With a Feshbach resonance, we have successfully created double BECs with largely tunable inter-species interactions and s…
We present measurements of interspecies Feshbach resonances and subsequent creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{39}\mathrm{K}$. We prepare both optically trapped ensembles in the spin state $\left|f = 1,m_{f}=-1\right\rangle$ and perform atom loss spectroscopy in a magnetic field range from 0 to $700 \, \mathrm{G}$. The observed features include several s-wave poles and a zero crossing of the interspecies scattering length as well as inelastic two-body contributions in the $\mathcal{M} = m_{\mathrm{Na}}+m_{\mathrm{K}} = -2$ submanifold. We identify an…
We present an overview of recent developments in species-imbalanced ("polarized") Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases. We summarize the current status of thermodynamics of these systems in terms of a phase diagram as a function of the Feshbach resonance detuning, polarization and temperature. We review instabilities of the s-wave superfluidity across the BEC-BCS crossover to phase separation, FFLO states, polarized molecular superfluidity and the normal state, driven by the species imbalance. We discuss different models and approximations of this system and compare their predictions to current exper…
We investigate the possibility to control the s-wave scattering length for the interaction between cold bosonic atoms by using a microwave field. Our scheme applies to any atomic species with a ground state that is split by hyperfine interaction. We discuss more specifically the case of alkali-metal atoms and calculate the change in the scattering length for 7Li, 23Na, 41K, 87Rb, and 133Cs. Our results yield optimistic prospects for experiments with the four latter species.
We investigate the phenomenon of fermionic pairing with mismatched Fermi surfaces in a two-species system in the presence of Feshbach resonance, where the resonantly-paired fermions combine to form bosonic molecules. We observe that the Feshbach parameters control the critical temperature of the gapped BCS superfluid state, and also determine the range over which a gapless breached pair state may exist. Demanding the positivity of the superfluid density, it is shown that although a breached pair state with two Fermi surfaces is always unstable, its single Fermi-surface counterpart can be stabl…
We have created a quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of 23Na and 40K with widely tunable interactions via broad interspecies Feshbach resonances. Twenty Feshbach resonances between 23Na and 40K were identified. The large and negative triplet background scattering length between 23Na and 40K causes a sharp enhancement of the fermion density in the presence of a Bose condensate. As explained via the asymptotic bound-state model (ABM), this strong background scattering leads to a series of wide Feshbach resonances observed at low magnetic fields. Our work opens up the prospect to create chemic…
We consider the behavior of an ultracold Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance, where the occupation of the closed channel may not be negligible. While the corrections to the single-channel formulae associated with the nonzero chemical potential and with particle conservation have been considered in the existing literature, there is a further effect, namely the "inter-channel Pauli exclusion principle" associated with the fact that a single hyperfine species may be common to the two channels. We focus on this effect and show that, as intuitively expected, the resulting corrections are o…
We study a model of two species of one-dimensional linearly dispersing fermions interacting via an s-wave Feshbach resonance at zero temperature. While this model is known to be integrable, it possesses novel features that have not previously been investigated. Here, we present an exact solution based on the coordinate Bethe Ansatz. In the limit of infinite resonance strength, which we term the strongly interacting limit, the two species of fermions behave as free Fermi gases. In the limit of infinitely weak resonance, or the weakly interacting limit, the gases can be in different phases depen…
We report on high-resolution Feshbach spectroscopy on a degenerate, spin-polarized Fermi gas of $^{161}$Dy atoms, measuring three-body recombination losses at low magnetic field. For field strength up to 1\,G, we identify as much as 44 resonance features and observe plateaus of very low losses. For four selected typical resonances, we study the dependence of the three-body recombination rate coefficient on the magnetic resonance detuning and on the temperature. We observe a strong suppression of losses with decreasing temperature already for small detunings from resonance. The characterization…
In a Feshbach resonance, the effective s-wave scattering length grows when one moves toward the resonance point, and eventually diverges at this point. There is one characteristic energy scale, $δ_c$, defined as, in the negative side of the resonance point, the detuning energy at which the weight of the bound state shifts from predominatedly in the open-channel to predominated in the closed-channel. When the many-body energy scale (e.g. the Fermi energy, $E_{F}$) is larger than $δ_c$, the closed-channel weight is significant and has to be included in the many-body theory. Furthermore, when two…
We consider a pair of atoms in an arbitrary trapping potential in the presence of magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance. We find the energy levels and occupation of the bound molecular states taking into account possible coupling between center of mass and relative motion induced by the trap. As a specific example we discuss the case of different atomic species in harmonic potential, where each atom feels different trapping frequency.
We study enhanced magneto-association of atoms into weakly-bound molecules near a Feshbach resonance using a quench preparatory stage. In anticipation of experiments with NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory aboard the International Space Station, we assume as a baseline a dual-species ($^{87}$Rb and $^{41}$K) gas in a parameter regime enabled by a microgravity environment. This includes subnanokelvin temperatures and dual-species gases at densities as low as 10$^8$/cm$^3$. Our studies indicate that, in such a regime, traditional magneto-association schemes are inefficient due to the weak coupling betw…
We present investigations of the formation rate and collisional stability of lithium Feshbach molecules in an ultracold three-component mixture composed of two resonantly interacting fermionic 6-Li spin states and bosonic 174-Yb. We observe long molecule lifetimes (> 100 ms) even in the presence of a large ytterbium bath and extract reaction rate coefficients of the system. We find good collisional stability of the mixture in the unitary regime, opening new possibilities for studies and probes of strongly interacting quantum gases in contact with a bath species.
We study the matter-wave bistability in coupled atom-molecule quantum gases, in which heteronuclear molecules are created via an interspecies Feshbach resonance involving either two-species Bose or two-species Fermi atoms at zero temperature. We show that the resonant two-channel Bose model is equivalent to the nondegenerate parametric down-conversion in quantum optics, while the corresponding Fermi model can be mapped to a quantum optics model that describes a single-mode laser field interacting with an ensemble of inhomogeneously broadened two-level atoms. Using these analogy and the fact th…
We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground…
Feshbach resonances are among the essential control tools used in ultracold atom experiments. However, for complex atomic species the theoretical characterization of resonances becomes challenging. For closely spaced resonances, the measurement of three-body losses does not provide sufficient resolution to discriminate them. For this reason, resonance spectroscopy of trapped isolated atoms is becoming the state of the art. Here we show that trapping the atoms in a double well potential such as an optical lattice or a pair of optical tweezers enables precise characterization of not only the res…
We report on the observation of heteronuclear magnetic Feshbach resonances in several isotope mixtures of the highly magnetic elements erbium and dysprosium. Among many narrow features, we identify two resonances with a width greater than one Gauss. We characterize one of these resonances, in a mixture of $^{168}$Er and $^{164}$Dy, in terms of loss rates and elastic cross section, and observe a temperature dependence of the on-resonance loss rate suggestive of a universal scaling associated with broad resonances. Our observations hold promise for the use of such a resonance for tuning the inte…
We present the production of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. Preparation of both species in the $\left| F=1,m_F=-1 \right\rangle$ state enabled us to exploit a total of three Fesh\-bach resonances which allows for simultaneous Feshbach tuning of the $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ intraspecies and the $^{39}\mathrm{K}$-$^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ interspecies scattering length. Thus dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates were produced by sympathetic cooling of $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ with $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. A dark spontaneous force optical trap was used for $^{87}\mathr…
Feshbach resonances in ultra-cold atomic gases have led to some of the most important advances in atomic physics. They did not only enable ground breaking work in the BEC-BCS crossover regime [1], but are also widely used for the association of ultra-cold molecules [2], leading to the formation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates [3,4] and ultra-cold dipolar molecular systems [5]. Here, we demonstrate the experimental realization of an optical Feshbach resonance using ultra-long range Rydberg molecules [6]. We show their practical use by tuning the revival time of a quantum many-body system…
We report the experimental and theoretical study of two-body interactions in a $^{6}$Li-$^{133}$Cs Fermi- Bose mixture. Using a translatable dipole trap setup, we have successfully trapped the two species in the same trap with temperatures of a few microkelvins. By monitoring atom number loss and inter-species thermalization, we identify five s-wave interspecies Feshbach resonances in the lowest two scattering channels. We construct a coupled channels model using molecular potentials to fit and characterize these resonances. Two of the resonances are as wide as 60 G and thus should be suitable…
We report on the production of a $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interspecies interaction and we study the mixture in the attractive regime, i.e. for negative values of the interspecies scattering length $a_{12}$. The binary condensate is prepared in the ground state and confined in a pure optical trap. We exploit Feshbach resonances for tuning the value of $a_{12}$. After compensating the gravitational sag between the two species with a magnetic field gradient, we drive the mixture into the attractive regime. We let the system to evolve both in free space…
The induced intraspecies interactions among the majority species, mediated by the minority species, is computed for a population-imbalanced two-component Fermi gas. Although the Feshbach-resonance mediated interspecies interaction is dominant for equal populations, leading to singlet s-wave pairing, we find that in the strongly imbalanced regime the induced intraspecies interaction leads to p-wave pairing and superfluidity of the majority species. Thus, we predict that the observed spin-polaron Fermi liquid state in this regime is unstable to p-wave superfluidity, in accordance with the result…
We report on a proposal to change the group velocity of a small Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) upon collision with another BEC in analogy to slowing of light passing through dispersive media. We make use of ultracold collisions near a magnetic Feshbach resonance, which gives rise to a sharp variation in scattering length with collision energy and thereby changes the group velocity. A generalized Gross-Pitaveskii equation is derived for a small BEC moving through a larger stationary BEC. We denote the two condensates by laser and medium BEC, respectively, to highlight the analogy to a laser pul…
We study a Bose-Fermi mixture within the framework of the mean-field theory, including three possible regimes for the fermionic species: fully polarized, BCS, and unitarity. Starting from the 3D description and using the variational approximation (VA), we derive 1D and 2D systems of equations, under the corresponding confining potentials. This method produces a pair of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations coupled to algebraic equations for the transverse widths of the confined state. The equations incorporate interactions between atoms of the same species and between the species, assuming tha…
We observe thermalization in the production of a degenerate Fermi gas of polar ${}^{40}\text{K}{}^{87}\text{Rb}$ molecules. By measuring the atom--dimer elastic scattering cross section near the Feshbach resonance, we show that Feshbach molecules rapidly reach thermal equilibrium with both parent atomic species. Equilibrium is essentially maintained through coherent transfer to the ground state. Sub-Poissonian density fluctuations in Feshbach and ground-state molecules are measured, giving an independent characterization of degeneracy and directly probing the molecular Fermi--Dirac distributio…
We use a two-channel model to investigate an interacting Bose gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance within a field path integral approach. The ground state properties show strong deviation from that of a broad Feshbach resonance or a single channel interaction. The deviation can be interpreted by the strong energy dependence of two-body scattering length near a narrow Feshbach resonance. As the density increases, the chemical potential and energy per particle are found to saturate while the inverse compressibility and phonon velocity undergo a significant reduction. We also take Gaussian fluc…
We experimentally investigate the mix-dimensional scattering occurring when the collisional partners live in different dimensions. We employ a binary mixture of ultracold atoms and exploit a species-selective 1D optical lattice to confine only one atomic species in 2D. By applying an external magnetic field in proximity of a Feshbach resonance, we adjust the free-space scattering length to observe a series of resonances in mixed dimensions. By monitoring 3-body inelastic losses, we measure the magnetic field values corresponding to the mix-dimensional scattering resonances and find a good agre…
Spin-triplet p-wave superfluids of single-species (or spin-polarized) fermionic atoms is a topological superfluid. In 2D such a superfluid supports zero-energy topological Majorana fermion excitations in order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. In 3D these superfluids support topologically protected Dirac points in the bulk spectrum and flat surface Majorana arcs. Despite the promise, creating a spin-triplet p-wave single-species fermionic superfluid either from direct p-wave Feshbach resonance or indirectly from the recently proposed artificial spin-orbit and Zeeman coupling…
We show that the essential properties of a Feshbach resonance in cold atomic gases can be tuned by dressing the atomic states in different scattering channels through inter-channel couplings. Such a scheme can be readily implemented in the orbital Feshbach resonance of alkaline-earth-like atoms by coupling hyperfine states in the clock-state manifolds. Using $^{173}$Yb atoms as an example, we find that both the resonance position and the two-body bound-state energy depend sensitively on the inter-channel coupling strength, which offers control parameters in tuning the inter-atomic interactions…
Using a two-channel model, we investigate theoretically the binding energy of confinement-induced Feshbach molecules in two- and one-dimensional ultracold atomic systems, near a Feshbach resonance. We show that the two-channel prediction will evidently deviate from the simple single-channel theory as the width of Feshbach resonances decreases. For one-dimensional system, we perform a full two-channel calculation, with the inclusion of bare interatomic interactions in the open channel. Away from the resonance, we find a sizable correction to the binding energy, if we neglect incorrectly the bar…
We present a simple technique for studying collisions of ultracold atoms in the presence of a magnetic field and radio-frequency radiation (rf). Resonant control of scattering properties can be achieved by using rf to couple a colliding pair of atoms to a bound state. We show, using the example of 6Li, that in some ranges of rf frequency and magnetic field this can be done without giving rise to losses. We also show that halo molecules of large spatial extent require much less rf power than deeply bound states. Another way to exert resonant control is with a set of rf-coupled bound states, lin…
We theoretically investigate the high-temperature thermodynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance, by using the second-order quantum virial expansion, and point out some new features compared to the broad resonance. The interatomic interaction is modeled by the pseudopotential with an additional parameter, i.e., the effective range, to characterize the narrow resonance width. Deeply inside the width of a narrow Feshbach resonance, we find the second virial coefficient evolves with the effective range from the well-known universal value 1/4 in the broad-res…
We study the impurity problem in a gas of $^{173}$Yb atoms near the recently discovered orbital Feshbach resonance. In an orbital Feshbach resonance, atoms in the electronic ground state $^1S_0$ interact with those in the long-lived excited $^3P_0$ state with magnetically tunable interactions. We consider an impurity atom with a given hyperfine spin in the $^3P_0$ state interacting with a single-component Fermi sea of atoms in the ground $^1S_0$ manifold. Close to the orbital Feshbach resonance, the impurity can induce collective particle-hole excitations out of the Fermi sea, which can be reg…
We propose a general method for optical control of magnetic Feshbach resonances in ultracold atomic gases with more than one molecular state in an energetically closed channel. Using two optical frequencies to couple two states in the closed channel, inelastic loss arising from spontaneous emission is greatly suppressed by destructive quantum interference at the two-photon resonance, i.e., dark-state formation, while the scattering length is widely tunable by varying the frequencies and/or intensities of the optical fields. This technique is of particular interest for a two-component atomic Fe…
We model combined photoassociation and Feshbach resonances in a Bose-Einstein condensate, where the shared dissociation continuum allows for quantum interference in losses from the condensate, as well as a dispersive-like shift of resonance. A simple analytical model, based on the limit of weakly bound molecules, agrees well with numerical experiments that explicitly include dissociation to noncondensate modes. For a resonant laser and an off-resonant magnetic field, constructive interference enables saturation of the photoassociation rate at user-friendly intensities, at a value set by the in…
We study the quench dynamics of a two-component ultracold Fermi gas from the weak into the strong interaction regime, where the short time dynamics are governed by the exponential growth rate of unstable collective modes. We obtain an effective interaction that takes into account both Pauli blocking and the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude near a Feshbach resonance. Using this interaction we analyze the competing instabilities towards Stoner ferromagnetism and pairing.
We discuss the stability of homonuclear and heteronuclear mixtures of 3He and 4He atoms in the metastable 2^3S_1 state (He*) and predict positions and widths of Feshbach resonances by using the Asymptotic Bound-state Model (ABM). All calculations are performed without fit parameters, using \emph{ab-initio} calculations of molecular potentials. One promising very broad Feshbach resonance (ΔB=72.9^{+18.3}_{-19.3} mT) is found that allows for tuning of the inter-isotope scattering length.
We characterize properties of the so-called repulsive polaron across the recently discovered orbital Feshbach resonance in alkaline-earth(-like) atoms. Being a metastable quasiparticle excitation at the positive energy, the repulsive polaron is induced by the interaction between an impurity atom and a Fermi sea. By analyzing in detail the energy, the polaron residue, the effective mass, and the decay rate of the repulsive polaron, we reveal interesting features that are intimately related to the two-channel nature of the orbital Feshbach resonance. In particular, we find that the life time of …
We use laser light near-resonant with a molecular bound-to-bound transition to control a magnetic Feshbach resonance in ultracold Fermi gases of $^{40}$K atoms. The spectrum of excited molecular states is measured by applying a laser field that couples the ground Feshbach molecular state to electronically excited molecular states. Nine strong bound-to-bound resonances are observed below the $^{2}P_{1/2}+^{2}S_{1/2}$ threshold. We use radio-frequency spectroscopy to characterize the laser-dressed bound state near a specific bound-to-bound resonance and show clearly the shift of the magnetic Fes…
We demonstrate and theoretically analyze the dressing of several proximate Feshbach resonances in Rb-87 using radio-frequency (rf) radiation. We present accurate measurements and characterizations of the resonances, and the dramatic changes in scattering properties that can arise through the rf dressing. Our scattering theory analysis yields quantitative agreement with the experimental data. We also present a simple interpretation of our results in terms of rf-coupled bound states interacting with the collision threshold.
Efimov physics is a universal phenomenon arising in quantum three-body systems. For systems with resonant two-body interactions, Efimov predicted an infinite series of three-body bound states with geometric scaling symmetry. These Efimov states were first observed in cold Cs atoms and have since been reported in a variety of atomic systems. While theories predict non-universal behavior for narrow Feshbach resonances, experiments on Efimov resonances are so far consistent with predictions based on universal theories. Here we directly compare the Efimov spectra in a $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture nea…
We examine the density profiles of the quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb, experimental observed recently, in the mean field regime. In this mixture there is a possibility of tuning the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions simultaneously using two well separated optical Feshbach resonances, and it is a good candidate to explore phase separation in Bose-Fermi mixtures. Depending on the Bose-Bose scattering length $a_\BB$, as the Bose-Fermi interaction is tuned the density of the fermions is pinched or swapping with bosons occurs.
We determine the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ and related finite temperature phase diagrams for the entire BCS-Bose Einstein condensation crossover in a homogeneous mixture of $^{6}$Li and $^{40}$K atoms with population imbalance. Our work is motivated by the recent observation of an inter-species Feshbach resonance. Pairing fluctuation effects, which significantly reduce $T_c$ from the onset temperature for pairing ($T^*$), provide reasonable estimates of $T_c$ and indicate that the inter-species superfluid phase should be accessible in future experiments. Although a generalized-Sa…
We numerically investigate the quantum phases and phase transition in a system made of two species of fermionic atoms that interact with each other via $s$-wave Feshbach resonance, and are subject to rotation or a synthetic gauge field that puts the fermions at Landau level filling factor $ν_f = 2$. We show that the system undergoes a continuous quantum phase transition from a $ν_f = 2$ fermionic integer quantum Hall state formed by atoms, to a $ν_b = 1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state formed by bosonic diatomic molecules. In the disk geometry we use, these two different topological ph…
We theoretically study a possible new pairing mechanism for a two-dimensional population imbalanced Fermi gas with short-range repulsive interactions which can be realized on the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance. We use a well-controlled renormalization group approach, which allows an unbiased study of the instabilities of imbalanced Fermi liquid without assumption of a broken symmetry and gives a numerical calculation of the transition temperature from microscopic parameters. Our results show a leading superfluid instability in the p-wave channel for the majority species. The correspondin…
We study the ground state and the thermal phase diagram of a two-species Bose-Hubbard model, with $U(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, describing atoms and molecules on a 2D optical lattice interacting via a Feshbach resonance. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and mean field theory, we show that the conversion between the two-species, coherently coupling the atomic and molecular states, has a crucial impact on the Mott-Superfluid transition and stabilizes an insulating phase with a gap controlled by the conversion term -- \textit{the Feshbach insulator} -- instead of a standard Mott insula…
Two species superfluid Fermi gas is investigated on the BCS side up to the Feshbach resonance. Using the Greens's function technique gradient corrections are calculated to the generalized Thomas-Fermi theory including Cooper pairing. Their relative magnitude is found to be measured by the small parameter $(d/R_{TF})^4$, where $d$ is the oscillator length of the trap potential and $R_{TF}$ is the radial extension of the density $n$ in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In particular at the Feshbach resonance the universal %constant $A_{TF}$ has the %correction in the center $A=A_{TF}+A_2(d/R_{TF})…
We report on the detection of extremely narrow Feshbach resonances by employing a Mott-insulating state for cesium atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The Mott insulator protects the atomic ensemble from high background three-body losses in a magnetic field region where a broad Efimov resonance otherwise dominates the atom loss in bulk samples. Our technique reveals three ultra-narrow and previously unobserved Feshbach resonances in this region with widths below $\approx 10\,μ$G, measured via Landau-Zener-type molecule formation and confirmed by theoretical predictions. For comparati…
We perform Feshbach spectroscopy in an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{40}$K with different spin-state combinations. We have observed 24 new interspecies Feshbach resonances at magnetic field up to 350 G. A full coupled-channel calculation is performed to assign these resonances. Among them, 12 resonances are identified as d-wave Feshbach resonances. These d-wave Feshbach resonances are about 5 G systematically smaller than the predications based on previous model potential. Taking into account these new experimental results, we improve the Born-Oppenheimer potentials between Na and K, a…
Ultracold gases of interacting spin-orbit coupled fermions are predicted to display exotic phenomena such as topological superfluidity and its associated Majorana fermions. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a route to strongly-interacting single-component atomic Fermi gases by combining an s-wave Feshbach resonance (giving strong interactions) and spin-orbit coupling (creating an effective p-wave channel). We identify the Feshbach resonance by its associated atomic loss feature and show that, in agreement with our single-channel scattering model, this feature is preserved and shifted as a fu…
We measure higher partial wave Feshbach resonances in an ultracold mixture of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs by magnetic field dependent atom-loss spectroscopy. For the $p$-wave Feshbach resonances we observe triplet structures corresponding to different projections of the pair rotation angular momentum onto the external magnetic field axis. We attribute the splittings to the spin-spin and spin-rotation couplings by modelling the observation using a full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with an oversimplified model, estimating the spin-rotation coupling by describing the weakly…
We report on the experimental observation of a novel inter-orbital Feshbach resonance in ultracold 173-Yb atoms, which opens the possibility of tuning the interactions between the 1S0 and 3P0 metastable state, both possessing vanishing total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via inter-orbital cross-thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy.
We propose a novel realization of Kondo physics with ultracold atomic gases. It is based on a Fermi sea of two different hyperfine states of one atom species forming bound states with a different species, which is spatially confined in a trapping potential. We show that different situations displaying Kondo physics can be realized when Feshbach resonances between the species are tuned by a magnetic field and the trapping frequency is varied. We illustrate that a mixture of ${}^{40}$K and ${}^{23}$Na atoms can be used to generate a Kondo correlated state and that momentum resolved radio frequen…
We report on the experimental observation of Feshbach resonances in large mass-imbalance mixtures of Erbium (Er) and Lithium (Li). All combinations between ${}^{168}$Er, ${}^{166}$Er and ${}^7$Li, ${}^6$Li are cooled to temperatures of a few microkelvin, partially by means of sympathetic cooling together with Ytterbium (Yb) as a third mixture component. The Er-Li inelastic interspecies collisional properties are studied for magnetic fields up to 680 G. In all cases resonant interspecies loss features, indicative of Feshbach resonances, have been observed. While most resonances have sub-Gauss w…
We study collisions in an optically trapped, pure sample of ultracold Cs$_2$ molecules in various internal states. The molecular gas is created by Feshbach association from a near-degenerate atomic gas, with adjustable temperatures in the nanokelvin range. We identify several narrow loss resonances, which point to the coupling to more complex molecular states and may be interpreted as Feshbach resonances in dimer-dimer interactions. Moreover, in some molecular states we observe a surprising temperature dependence in collisional loss. This shows that the situation cannot be understood in terms …
