We use a two-channel model to investigate an interacting Bose gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance within a field path integral approach. The ground state properties show strong deviation from that of a broad Feshbach resonance or a single channel interaction. The deviation can be interpreted by the strong energy dependence of two-body scattering length near a narrow Feshbach resonance. As the density increases, the chemical potential and energy per particle are found to saturate while the inverse compressibility and phonon velocity undergo a significant reduction. We also take Gaussian fluctuations into account and calculate the ground state energy correction as well as the quantum depletion.
We present a detailed study of the scattering properties of ultracold mixtures of bosonic potassium atoms. We locate 20 previously unobserved Feshbach resonances in isotopic 39K-41K mixtures. These are assigned to s-wave molecular channels by comparison to an asymptotic bound state model and coupled channels calculations. Additional Feshbach resonances are studied in spin mixtures of a single potassium isotope, both in 39K and 41K. In particular, we characterize the parameters of a selected 39K Feshbach resonance by radio-frequency association of Feshbach molecules. Our results could be exploi…
We examine the density profiles of the quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb, experimental observed recently, in the mean field regime. In this mixture there is a possibility of tuning the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions simultaneously using two well separated optical Feshbach resonances, and it is a good candidate to explore phase separation in Bose-Fermi mixtures. Depending on the Bose-Bose scattering length $a_\BB$, as the Bose-Fermi interaction is tuned the density of the fermions is pinched or swapping with bosons occurs.
Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of Feshbach molecules in a homogeneous Bose gas is studied at finite temperatures in a single-channel mean-field approach where the Hartree-Fock energy and pairing gap are determined self-consistently. In the molecular-BEC state, the atomic excitation is gapped and the molecular excitation is gapless. The binding energy of Feshbach molecules is shifted from the vacuum value due to many-body effect. When the scattering length $a_s$ of atoms is negative, the system is subject to mechanical collapse due to negative compressibility. The system is stable in most reg…
We investigate controlled phase separation of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the proximity of mixed-spin-channel Feshbach resonance in the |F = 1, mF = +1> and |F = 2,mF = -1> states of 87Rb at a magnetic field of 9.10 G. Phase separation occurs on the lower magnetic-field side of the Feshbach resonance while the two components overlap on the higher magnetic-field side. The Feshbach resonance curve of the scattering length is obtained from the shape of the atomic cloud by comparison with the numerical analysis of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.
Based on the analytic model of Feshbach resonances in harmonic traps described in Phys. Rev. A 83, 030701 (2011) a Bose-Hubbard model is introduced that provides an accurate description of two atoms in an optical lattice at a Feshbach resonance with only a small number of Bloch bands. The approach circumvents the problem that the eigenenergies in the presence of a delta-like coupling do not converge to the correct energies, if an uncorrelated basis is used. The predictions of the Bose-Hubbard model are compared to non-perturbative calculations for both the stationary states and the time-depend…
We have realized a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and observed their immiscibility. Because of the favorable background intra- and inter-species scattering lengths, stable condensates can be obtained via efficient evaporative cooling and sympathetic cooling without the need for fine tuning of the interactions. Our system thus provides a clean platform for studying inter-species interactions driven effects in superfluid mixtures. With a Feshbach resonance, we have successfully created double BECs with largely tunable inter-species interactions and s…
We present a family of nonautonomous bright and dark soliton solutions of Bose-Einstein condensates with the time-dependent scattering length in an expulsive parabolic potential. These solutions show that the amplitude, width, and velocity of soliton can be manipulated by adjusting the atomic scattering length via Feshbach resonance. For the cases of both attractive and repulsive interaction, the total particles number is a conservation quantity, but the peak (dip) density can be controlled by the Feshbach resonance parameter. Especially, we investigate the modulation instability process in un…
We theoretically investigate normal-state properties of a gas mixture of single-component bosons and fermions with a hetero-nuclear Feshbach resonance. Including strong hetero-pairing fluctuations associated with the Feshbach resonance, we calculate single-particle density of states, as well as the spectral weight at various interaction strengths. For this purpose, we employ an improved T-matrix approximation (TMA), where the bare Bose Green's function in the non-selfconsistent TMA self-energy is modified so as to satisfy the Hugenholtz-Pines relation at the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) te…
We theoretically investigate the high-temperature thermodynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance, by using the second-order quantum virial expansion, and point out some new features compared to the broad resonance. The interatomic interaction is modeled by the pseudopotential with an additional parameter, i.e., the effective range, to characterize the narrow resonance width. Deeply inside the width of a narrow Feshbach resonance, we find the second virial coefficient evolves with the effective range from the well-known universal value 1/4 in the broad-res…
We model combined photoassociation and Feshbach resonances in a Bose-Einstein condensate, where the shared dissociation continuum allows for quantum interference in losses from the condensate, as well as a dispersive-like shift of resonance. A simple analytical model, based on the limit of weakly bound molecules, agrees well with numerical experiments that explicitly include dissociation to noncondensate modes. For a resonant laser and an off-resonant magnetic field, constructive interference enables saturation of the photoassociation rate at user-friendly intensities, at a value set by the in…
We explore the possibility that, at zero temperature, vortices can be created spontaneously in a condensate of cold Fermi atoms, whose scattering is controlled by a narrow Feshbach resonance, by rapid magnetic tuning from the BEC to BCS regime. This could be achievable with current experimental techniques.
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. lett. 105, 195301 (2010)), Song et al. introduced a new variational approach to treat strong attractive boson-fermion (BF) correlations in BF atomic mixtures. The proposed theory predicts a first order phase transition to a condensate of composite BF pairs with center of mass momentum Q=0 as opposed to a composite fermionic molecular Fermi gas. We show in this comment that their approach is incorrect and moreover, by resorting to an exactly solvable model we demonstrate that there cannot be more than one correlated Q=0 BF pair in complete contradiction with their…
Efimov physics is a universal phenomenon arising in quantum three-body systems. For systems with resonant two-body interactions, Efimov predicted an infinite series of three-body bound states with geometric scaling symmetry. These Efimov states were first observed in cold Cs atoms and have since been reported in a variety of atomic systems. While theories predict non-universal behavior for narrow Feshbach resonances, experiments on Efimov resonances are so far consistent with predictions based on universal theories. Here we directly compare the Efimov spectra in a $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture nea…
We present measurements of interspecies Feshbach resonances and subsequent creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{39}\mathrm{K}$. We prepare both optically trapped ensembles in the spin state $\left|f = 1,m_{f}=-1\right\rangle$ and perform atom loss spectroscopy in a magnetic field range from 0 to $700 \, \mathrm{G}$. The observed features include several s-wave poles and a zero crossing of the interspecies scattering length as well as inelastic two-body contributions in the $\mathcal{M} = m_{\mathrm{Na}}+m_{\mathrm{K}} = -2$ submanifold. We identify an…
We present a study of interspecies Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{7}$Li-$^{133}$Cs Bose-Bose mixtures. We locate ten interspecies resonances in three different spin-state combinations. By comparing to coupled-channel calculations, we assign six of the resonances to $s$-wave channels and the rest to $p$-wave channels. We use the $s$-wave resonances to refine the ground-state potentials of LiCs in the coupled-channel calculations and then obtain an accurate characterization of the scattering and bound-state properties of the mixtures. Our results will be useful for future experiments with u…
Paraexcitons, the lowest energy exciton states in Cu$_{2}$O, have been considered a good system for realizing exciton Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The fact that their BEC has not been attained so far is attributed to a collision-induced loss, whose nature remains unclear. To understand collisional properties of cold paraexcitons governing their BEC, we perform here a microscopic consideration of the s-wave paraexciton-paraexciton scattering. We show its two-channel character with incoming paraexcitons coupled to a biexciton, which is a Feshbach resonance producing a paraexciton loss and a…
Three-body recombination is a phenomenon common in atomic and molecular collisions, producing heating in the system. However, we find the cooling effect of the three-body recombination of a 6Li Fermi gas near its s-wave narrow Feshbach resonance. Such counter-intuitive behavior is explained as follows, the threshold energy of the quasi-bounded Feshbach molecule acts as the knife of cooling, expelling the scattering atoms with selected kinetic energy from the trap. When the threshold energy happens to be larger than 3/2kBT, each lost atom in the three-body recombination process has more than 3k…
We have created a quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of 23Na and 40K with widely tunable interactions via broad interspecies Feshbach resonances. Twenty Feshbach resonances between 23Na and 40K were identified. The large and negative triplet background scattering length between 23Na and 40K causes a sharp enhancement of the fermion density in the presence of a Bose condensate. As explained via the asymptotic bound-state model (ABM), this strong background scattering leads to a series of wide Feshbach resonances observed at low magnetic fields. Our work opens up the prospect to create chemic…
We calculate the radio frequency (RF) spectrum of fermionic atoms near a narrow Feshbach resonance, explaining observations made in ultracold samples of $^6\rm{Li}$ [E. L. Hazlett {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 045304 (2012)]. We use a two channel resonance model to show that the RF spectrum contains two peaks. In the wide-resonance limit, nearly all spectral weight lies in one of these peaks, and typically the second peak is very broad. We find strong temperature dependence, which can be traced to the energy dependence of the two-particle scattering. In addition to microscopic calc…
We experimentally measure, and theoretically analyze the three-atom recombination rate, $L_3$, around a narrow $s$ wave magnetic Feshbach resonance of $^6$Li-$^6$Li at 543.3 Gauss. By examining both the magnetic field dependence and especially the temperature dependence of $L_3$ over a wide range of temperatures from a few $μ$K to above 200 $μ$K, we show that three-atom recombination through a narrow resonance follows a universal behavior determined by the long-range van der Waals potential, and can be described by a set of rate equations in which three-body recombination proceeds via successi…
We study the problem of a single impurity of mass $M$ immersed in a Fermi sea of particles of mass $m$. The impurity and the fermions interact through a s-wave narrow Feshbach resonance, so that the Feshbach length $R_*$ naturally appears in the system. We use simple variational ansatz, limited to at most one pair of particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea and we determine for the polaronic and dimeronic branches the phase diagram between absolute ground state, local minimum, thermodynamically unstable regions (with negative effective mass), and regions of complex energies (with negative im…
We study Efimov physics of three identical bosons with pairwise multichannel interactions for Feshbach resonances of adjustable width. We find that the two-body multichannel nature of the interaction can affect the universal three-body spectrum, especially for resonances of intermediate width. The shifts in this universal spectrum are caused by trimer states in the closed interaction channels that couple to the universal Efimov states. However, in the narrow resonance limit we find that the Efimov spectrum is set by the resonance width parameter $r^*$ only independent of the interaction potent…
We study the three-fermion problem within a 1D model of a Feshbach resonance in order to gain insight into how the FFLO-like state at small negative scattering lengths evolves into a Bose-Fermi mixture at small positive scattering lengths. The FFLO state possesses an oscillating superfluid correlation function, while in a Bose-Fermi mixture correlations are monotonic. We find that this behavior is is already present at the 3-body level. We present an exact study of the 3-body problem, and gain extra insights by considering worldlines of a path integral Monte-Carlo calculation.
We show that a narrow resonance produces strong interaction effects far beyond its width on the side of the resonance where the bound state has not been formed. This is due to a resonance structure of its phase shift, which shifts the phase of a large number of scattering states by $π$ before the bound state emerges. As a result, the magnitude of the interaction energy when approaching the resonance on the "upper" and "lower" branch from different side of the resonance is highly asymmetric, unlike their counter part in wide resonances. Measurements of these effects are experimentally feasible.
We develop a diagrammatic approach for solving few-body problems in heteronuclear fermionic mixtures near a narrow interspecies Feshbach resonance. We calculate s-, p-, and d-wave phaseshifts for the scattering of an atom by a weakly-bound dimer. The fermionic statistics of atoms and the composite nature of the dimer lead to a strong angular momentum dependence of the atom-dimer interaction, which manifests itself in a peculiar interference of the scattered s- and p-waves. This effect strengthens with the mass ratio and is remarkably pronounced in 40K-(40K-6Li) atom-dimer collisions. We calcul…
In this Letter we have studied dressed bound states in Fermi-Bose mixtures near broad interspecies resonance, and implications on many-body correlations. We present the evidence for a first order phase transition between a mixture of Fermi gas and condensate, and a fully paired mixture where extended fermionic molecules occupy a single pairing channel instead of forming a molecular Fermi surface. We have further investigated the effect of Fermi surface dynamics, pair fluctuations and discussed the validity of our results.
The polaronic system consisting of an impurity in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate is considered in the presence of a narrow Feshbach resonance. For this purpose a coupled-channel model is used, which at the mean field level predicts the formation of quasiparticles that are a superposition of the impurity and the molecular states. The impurity-boson interactions and the coupling between the open and closed channels are then considered weak and a perturbative calculation of the corrections to the mean field results is presented. This allows to examine the properties of the quasiparticles, such…
In this letter we show that the recently theoretically predicted and experimentally observed "orbital Feshbach resonance" in alkali-earth-like Yb-173 atom is a narrow resonance in energy, while it is hundreds Gauss wide in term of magnetic field strength, taking the advantage that the magnetic moment difference between the open and closed channels is quite small. Therefore this is an ideal platform for the experimental realization of a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid with narrow resonance. We show that the transition temperature for the Fermi superfluid in this system, especially at the …
We address the phase of a highly polarized Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance starting from the problem of a single down spin fermion immersed in a Fermi sea of up spins. Both polaron and pairing states are considered using the variational wave function approach, and we find that the polaron to pairing transition will take place at the BCS side of the resonance, strongly in contrast to a wide resonance where the transition is located at the BEC side. For pairing phase, we find out the critical strength of repulsive interaction between pairs above which the mixture of pairs and fermio…
The narrow s-wave Feshbach resonance of a $^6$Li Fermi gas shows strong three-body loss, which is proposed to be used to measure the minute change of a magnetic field around the resonance. However, the eddy current will cause ultracold atom experiencing a magnetic field delayed to the desired magnetic field from the current of the magnetic coils. The elimination of the eddy current effect will play a key role in any experiments that motivated to measure the magnetic field to the precision of a part per million stability. Here, we apply a method to correct the eddy current effect for precision …
We study suppression of the collapse and stabilization of matter-wave solitons by means of time-periodic modulation of the effective nonlinearity, using the nonpolynomial Schroedinger equation (NPSE) for BEC trapped in a tight cigar-shaped potential. By means of systematic simulations, a stability region is identified in the plane of the modulation amplitude and frequency. In the low-frequency regime, solitons feature chaotic evolution, although they remain robust objects.
We produce Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{162}$Dy atoms employing an innovative technique based on a resonator-enhanced optical trap that allows efficient loading from the magneto-optical trap and fast evaporation. We characterize the scattering properties of the ultracold atoms for magnetic fields between 6 and 30 G. In addition to the typical chaotic distribution of narrow Feshbach resonances in Lanthanides, we discover two rather isolated broad features at around 22 G and 27 G. A characterization using the complementary measurements of losses, thermalization, anisotropic expansion and mole…
Dynamics of atomic and molecular bright solitons in a hybrid atom-molecular BEC (Bose Einstein Condensate) system of 85Rb coupled through Magnetic Feshbach Resonance (MFR) has been investigated. By solving the time independent atom-molecular coupled equations, the initial atomic and molecular wavefunctions were obtained and the dynamics of the initial atomic and molecular waves in a spherical one-dimensional trap were studied by solving the time-dependent atom-molecular coupled equations. During evolution two types of induced or stimulated decays of the feshbach molecules were switched on. The…
The entropy of the coexisting gas of ultra cold fermionic atoms and Bosonic molecular condensate confined in a magnetic trap has been calculated from equation of motion approaches. We have found that the entropy production depends not only to the Feshbach resonance and but also under certain limits to Rabi type oscillation and Bose Josephson junction type oscillation.
We report on the detection of extremely narrow Feshbach resonances by employing a Mott-insulating state for cesium atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The Mott insulator protects the atomic ensemble from high background three-body losses in a magnetic field region where a broad Efimov resonance otherwise dominates the atom loss in bulk samples. Our technique reveals three ultra-narrow and previously unobserved Feshbach resonances in this region with widths below $\approx 10\,μ$G, measured via Landau-Zener-type molecule formation and confirmed by theoretical predictions. For comparati…
We reveal the existence of high-density Feshbach resonances in the collision between the ground and metastable states of $^{171}$Yb and coherently produce the associated Feshbach molecules by photoassociation. The extremely small transition rate is overcome by the enhanced Franck-Condon factor of the weakly bound Feshbach molecule, allowing us to observe Rabi oscillations with long decay time between an atom pair and a molecule in an optical lattice. We also perform the precision measurement of the binding energies, which characterizes the observed resonances. The ultra-narrow photoassociation…
We study the collective excitation frequencies of a harmonically trapped 85Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. To this end, we solve the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation by using a Gaussian variational approach and obtain the coupled set of ordinary differential equations for the widths and the center of mass of the condensate. A linearization shows that the dipole mode frequency decreases when the bias magnetic field approaches the Feshbach resonance, so the Kohn theorem is violated.
We investigate magnetoassociation of ultracold fermionic Feshbach molecules in a mixture of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms, where we can create as many as $7\times 10^4$ $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules with a conversion efficiency as high as 45%. In the perturbative regime, we find that the conversion efficiency depends linearly on the density overlap of the two gases, with a slope that matches a parameter-free model that uses only the atom masses and the known Feshbach resonance parameters. In the saturated regime, we find that the maximum number of Feshbach molecules depends on the atoms' phase-sp…
We study the bosonic atoms with a wide Feshbach resonance at zero temperature in terms of the renormalization group. We indicate that this system will always collapse in the dilute limit. On the side with a positive scattering length, the atomic superfluid is an unstable local minimum in the dilute limit and it determines the thermodynamics of this system within its lifetime. We calculate the equilibrium properties at zero temperature in the unitary regime. They exhibit universal scaling forms in the dilute limit due to the presence of a nontrivial zero temperature, zero density fixed point. M…
We extend our previous investigations of fermionic condensation in broad Feshbach resonances by using the two-channel model developed for narrow Feshbach resonances. We investigate two crossovers: the BCS-BEC crossover by changing the s-wave scattering length and the crossover from a narrow to a broad resonance by changing the atom-molecule coupling. At zero temperature we analyze, as a function of both atom-molecule coupling and s-wave scattering length, the chemical potential, the energy gap, and the condensate fraction of atoms. In particular, we predict the contribution of Cooper pairs and…
We study the post-quench dynamics of unitary Bose gases using a two-channel model, focusing on the effect of variations in the width of the Feshbach resonance due to density changes. We generally find that increasing the density leads to a corresponding increase in the production of closed channel molecules, a decrease in the build up of quantum depletion and a transition from linear to quadratic early-time growth of the two-body contact as well as the condensed pair fraction. Motivated by the presence of closed-channel molecules in the unitary regime, we study the embedded two-body problem fi…
We present a detailed study of interspecies Feshbach resonances of the bosonic $^{23}\mathrm{Na}+$$^{39}\mathrm{K}$ mixture for magnetic fields up to $750 \, \mathrm{G}$ in various collision channels. A total of fourteen Feshbach resonances are reported, as well as four zero crossings of the scattering length and three inelastic two-body loss features. We use the observed magnetic field locations of the resonant features together with the known data on $^{23}\mathrm{Na}+$$^{40}\mathrm{K}$ to refine the singlet and triplet ground state potentials of NaK and achieve a consistent description of F…
We present a theoretical model for Bragg scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the vicinity of a magnetic Feshbach resonance, using a two c-field formalism, one c-field for the atom and the other for a molecule formed of two atoms. We use this model to numerically simulate a recent experiment [S. B. Papp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 101(13):135301, Sep 2008] investigating the effects of strong interactions on the Bragg spectrum from a 85Rb BEC. Results from these simulations are in very good quantitative agreement with the experimental results, confirming the importance of the reson…
We model the formation of stable heteronuclear molecules via pulsed Raman photoassociation of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate near a strong Feshbach resonance, for both counterintuitive and intuitive pulse sequencing. Compared to lasers alone, weak Raman photoassociation is enhanced by as much as a factor of ten (five) for a counterintuitive (intuitive) pulse sequence, whereas strong Raman photoassociation is barely enhanced at all--regardless of pulse sequence. Stronger intra-atom, molecule, or atom-molecule collisions lead to an expected decrease in conversion efficiency, but strong…
We report on the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation of erbium atoms and on the observation of magnetic Feshbach resonances at low magnetic field. By means of evaporative cooling in an optical dipole trap, we produce pure condensates of $^{168}$Er, containing up to $7 \times 10^{4}$ atoms. Feshbach spectroscopy reveals an extraordinary rich loss spectrum with six loss resonances already in a narrow magnetic-field range up to 3 G. Finally, we demonstrate the application of a low-field Feshbach resonance to produce a tunable dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate and we observe its characteristi…
We investigate phase separation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of two-component atoms and one-component molecules with a homonuclear Feshbach resonance. We develop a full model for dilute atomic and molecular gases including correlation of the Feshbach resonance and all kinds of interparticle interactions, and numerically calculate order parameters of the BECs in spherical harmonic oscillator traps at zero temperature with the Bogoliubov's classical field approximation. As a result, we find out that the Feshbach resonance can induce two types of phase separation. The actual phase structur…
The spectrum of two bosons and two fermions in a trap is calculated using a correlated-Gaussian basis throughout the range of a broad Fano-Feshbach resonance. The calculations provide a few-body solution to the magneto-association of fermionic Feshbach molecules. This solution is used to study the time evolution of the system as the scattering length changes, mimicking experiments with Bose-Fermi mixtures near Fano-Feshbach resonances. The structure of avoided crossings in the few-body spectrum enables an interpretation of the dynamics of the system as a sequence of Landau-Zener transitions. T…
We study the quantum three-body free space problem of two same-spin-state fermions of mass $m$ interacting with a different particle of mass $M$, on an infinitely narrow Feshbach resonance with infinite s-wave scattering length. This problem is made interesting by the existence of a tunable parameter, the mass ratio $α=m/M$. By a combination of analytical and numerical techniques, we obtain a detailed picture of the spectrum of three-body bound states, within {\sl each} sector of fixed total angular momentum $l$. For $α$ increasing from 0, we find that the trimer states first appear at the $l$…
We report on a proposal to change the group velocity of a small Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) upon collision with another BEC in analogy to slowing of light passing through dispersive media. We make use of ultracold collisions near a magnetic Feshbach resonance, which gives rise to a sharp variation in scattering length with collision energy and thereby changes the group velocity. A generalized Gross-Pitaveskii equation is derived for a small BEC moving through a larger stationary BEC. We denote the two condensates by laser and medium BEC, respectively, to highlight the analogy to a laser pul…
We measure the critical scattering length for the appearance of the first three-body bound state, or Efimov three-body parameter, at seven different Feshbach resonances in ultracold 39K atoms. We study both intermediate and narrow resonances, where the three-body spectrum is expected to be determined by the non-universal coupling of two scattering channels. We observe instead approximately the same universal relation of the three-body parameter with the two-body van der Waals radius already found for broader resonances, which can be modeled with a single channel. This unexpected observation su…
The many-boson problem in presence of an asymptotically narrow Feshbach resonance is considered. The low energy properties are investigated using a two-channel Hamiltonian. The energy spectrum of this model is shown to be bounded from below in the limit of zero range interaction. This implies the promising possibility of achieving a strongly interacting bosonic phase in a dilute regime where the details of the actual interatomic forces are irrelevant. The integral relation between the energy and the one-body momentum distribution is derived.
Granulation of quantum matter -- the formation of persistent small-scale patterns -- is realized in the images of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates perturbed by a periodically modulated interaction. Our present analysis of a mean-field approximation suggests that granulation is caused by the gradual transformation of phase undulations into density undulations. This is achieved by a suitably large modulation frequency, while for low enough frequencies the system exhibits a quasi-adiabatic regime. We show that the persistence of granulation is a result of the irregular evolution of…
The properties of impurities immersed in a large Fermi sea are naturally described in terms of dressed quasiparticles: attractive and repulsive polarons, and dressed molecules. Motivated by recent experiments on narrow Feshbach resonances, we analyze here how the quasiparticle properties are affected by a non-zero resonance range. We find two interesting analytic results. For large range, the ground state energy close to resonance is shown to become perturbative in the inverse range. In the limit of broad resonance instead, we provide a new Tan's relation linking the impurity ground state ener…
