Dynamics of atomic and molecular solitary waves inatom-molecular hybrid Bose-Einstein condensates coupled by Magnetic Feshbach Resonance: Role of induced decays of Feshbach Molecules
Dynamics of atomic and molecular bright solitons in a hybrid atom-molecular BEC (Bose Einstein Condensate) system of 85Rb coupled through Magnetic Feshbach Resonance (MFR) has been investigated. By solving the time independent atom-molecular coupled equations, the initial atomic and molecular wavefunctions were obtained and the dynamics of the initial atomic and molecular waves in a spherical one-dimensional trap were studied by solving the time-dependent atom-molecular coupled equations. During evolution two types of induced or stimulated decays of the feshbach molecules were switched on. These two types of stimulated decays of the feshbach molecules to the two-atom continuum and to the bound level of the lowest hyperfinee state of the molecule were induced by laser or Radio Frequency fields. Hence the strength of these two induced decays can be controlled by varying the laser or RF field parameters e.g. intensity, detuning etc. It is found that depending on the relative strength of these two types of stimulated or induced decays initial atomic and molecular waves assume solitonic nature as bright solitons during evolution and the stability of these solitonic waves can be achieved by controlling the relative strength of induced decays in two different channels. It is shown that these two induced decays lead to the formation of stable atomic and molecular solitons by suppressing the initial oscillations and instability in the atom-molecular coupled system of 85Rb atoms.
Considering a Bose-Einstein condensed gas confined in one dimension with periodic boundary conditions, we demonstrate that, very generally, solitary-wave and rotational excitations coincide. This exact equivalence allows us to establish connections between a number of effects that are present in these two problems, many of which have been studied using the mean-field approximation.
Motivated by recent progress in trapping Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in toroidal potentials, we examine solitary-wave solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation subject to periodic boundary conditions. When the circumference of the ring is much larger than the size of the wave, the density profile is well approximated by that of an infinite ring, however the density and the velocity of propagation cannot vanish simultaneously. When the size of the ring becomes comparable to the size of the wave, the density variation becomes sinusoidal and the velocity of propagation saturates to a cons…
We investigate magnetoassociation of ultracold fermionic Feshbach molecules in a mixture of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms, where we can create as many as $7\times 10^4$ $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules with a conversion efficiency as high as 45%. In the perturbative regime, we find that the conversion efficiency depends linearly on the density overlap of the two gases, with a slope that matches a parameter-free model that uses only the atom masses and the known Feshbach resonance parameters. In the saturated regime, we find that the maximum number of Feshbach molecules depends on the atoms' phase-sp…
We report on a proposal to change the group velocity of a small Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) upon collision with another BEC in analogy to slowing of light passing through dispersive media. We make use of ultracold collisions near a magnetic Feshbach resonance, which gives rise to a sharp variation in scattering length with collision energy and thereby changes the group velocity. A generalized Gross-Pitaveskii equation is derived for a small BEC moving through a larger stationary BEC. We denote the two condensates by laser and medium BEC, respectively, to highlight the analogy to a laser pul…
We study the post-quench dynamics of unitary Bose gases using a two-channel model, focusing on the effect of variations in the width of the Feshbach resonance due to density changes. We generally find that increasing the density leads to a corresponding increase in the production of closed channel molecules, a decrease in the build up of quantum depletion and a transition from linear to quadratic early-time growth of the two-body contact as well as the condensed pair fraction. Motivated by the presence of closed-channel molecules in the unitary regime, we study the embedded two-body problem fi…
Granulation of quantum matter -- the formation of persistent small-scale patterns -- is realized in the images of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates perturbed by a periodically modulated interaction. Our present analysis of a mean-field approximation suggests that granulation is caused by the gradual transformation of phase undulations into density undulations. This is achieved by a suitably large modulation frequency, while for low enough frequencies the system exhibits a quasi-adiabatic regime. We show that the persistence of granulation is a result of the irregular evolution of…
We model the formation of stable heteronuclear molecules via pulsed Raman photoassociation of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate near a strong Feshbach resonance, for both counterintuitive and intuitive pulse sequencing. Compared to lasers alone, weak Raman photoassociation is enhanced by as much as a factor of ten (five) for a counterintuitive (intuitive) pulse sequence, whereas strong Raman photoassociation is barely enhanced at all--regardless of pulse sequence. Stronger intra-atom, molecule, or atom-molecule collisions lead to an expected decrease in conversion efficiency, but strong…
We investigate phase separation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of two-component atoms and one-component molecules with a homonuclear Feshbach resonance. We develop a full model for dilute atomic and molecular gases including correlation of the Feshbach resonance and all kinds of interparticle interactions, and numerically calculate order parameters of the BECs in spherical harmonic oscillator traps at zero temperature with the Bogoliubov's classical field approximation. As a result, we find out that the Feshbach resonance can induce two types of phase separation. The actual phase structur…
We derive and discuss the temperature dependance of the condensate and noncondensate density profile of a Bose-Einstein condensate gas with Feshbach resonance in a parabolic trap. These quantities are calculated self-consistently using the generalized Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations within the Bogoliubov approximation. At zero temperature, the HFB equation can be solved by means of a variation method that give the low excitation spectrum. Moreover, within the two-body collision theory, we estimate the relationship between the atom number and the external magnetic field $B$, it is in go…
A mixture of two distinguishable Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a ring potential has numerous interesting properties under rotational and solitary-wave excitation. The lowest-energy states for a fixed angular momentum coincide with a family of solitary-wave solutions. In the limit of weak interactions, exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian is possible and permits evaluation of the complete excitation spectrum of the system.
Ultracold potassium is an interesting candidate for quantum technology applications and fundamental research as it allows controlling intra-atomic interactions via low-field magnetic Feshbach resonances. However, the realization of high-flux sources of Bose-Einstein condensates remains challenging due to the necessity of optical trapping to use magnetic fields as free parameter. We investigate the production of all-optical $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensates with different scattering lengths using a Feshbach resonance near $33$ G. By tuning the scattering length in a range between $75\, a_0$ an…
We address dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into a one-dimensional four-color optical lattice (FOL) potential with commensurate wavelengths and tunable intensities. This configuration lends system-specific symmetry properties. The analysis identifies specific multi-parameter forms of the FOL potential which admits exact solitary-wave solutions. This newly found class of potentials includes more particular species, such as frustrated double-well superlattices, and bi-chromatic and three-color lattices, which are subject to respective symmetry constraints. Our exact solutions …
Motivated by recent experimental observations, we study theoretically multiple bright solitary waves of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Through variational and numerical analyses, we determine the threshold for collapse of these states. Under $π$-phase differences between adjacent waves, we show that the experimental states lie consistently at the threshold for collapse, where the corresponding in-phase states are highly unstable. Following the observation of two long-lived solitary waves in a trap, we perform detailed three-dimensional simulations which confirm that in-phase waves undergo …
We convert a strongly interacting ultracold Bose gas into a mixture of atoms and molecules by sweeping the interactions from resonant to weak. By analyzing the decay dynamics of the molecular gas, we show that in addition to Feshbach dimers it contains Efimov trimers. Typically around 8\% of the total atomic population is bound into trimers, identified by their density-independent lifetime of about 100~$μ$s. The lifetime of the Feshbach dimers shows a density dependence due to inelastic atom-dimer collisions, in agreement with theoretical calculations. We also vary the density of the gas acros…
We present two simple designs of matter-wave beam splitters in a trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). In our scheme, identical pairs of atomic solitons are produced by an adequate control --- in time and/or space --- of the scattering length. Our analysis is performed by numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and supported by several analytic estimates. Our results show that these devices can be implemented in the frame of current BEC experiments. The system has potential applications for the construction of a soliton interferometer.
Mean-field approach has recently been used to model coupled atom-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and coupled Fermi-Bose condensates near Feshbach resonance. Sweeping of magnetic field across the resonance gives a new (nonlinear) version of Landau-Zener problem. We investigate the structure of the corresponding classical phase space and calculate change in the action which corresponds to finite-rate efficiency of the sweep. We consider the case of non-zero initial action, which corresponds to some finite initial molecular fraction.
We propose to create ultracold ground state molecules in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate by adiabatic crossing of an optical Feshbach resonance. We envision a scheme where the laser intensity and possibly also frequency are linearly ramped over the resonance. Our calculations for $^{87}$Rb show that for sufficiently tight traps it is possible to avoid spontaneous emission while retaining adiabaticity, and conversion efficiencies of up to 50% can be expected.
We consider the stability of an ultracold trapped Bose-Einstein condensate near a Feshbach resonance. Using a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation that includes higher-order terms and a multi-channel model of Feshbach resonances, we find regions where stability can be enhanced or suppressed around experimentally measured resonances. We suggest a number of ways to probe the stability diagram. Using scattering length zero-crossings huge deviations are founds for the critical particle number. Effects are enhanced for narrow resonances or tighter traps. Macroscopic tunneling of the condensate is ano…
We demonstrate the production of large $^7$Li Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical dipole trap using $D_1$ gray molasses. The sub-Doppler cooling technique reduces the temperature of $4\times10^9$ atoms to $25~μ$K in 3~ms. After microwave evaporation cooling in a magnetic quadrupole trap, we transfer the atoms to a crossed optical dipole trap, where we employ a magnetic Feshbach resonance on the $|F=1,m_F=1\rangle$ state. Fast evaporation cooling is achieved by tilting the optical potential using a magnetic field gradient on the top of the Feshbach field. Our setup produces pure condensates…
Feshbach resonances are an invaluable tool in atomic physics, enabling precise control of interactions and the preparation of complex quantum phases of matter. Here, we theoretically analyze a solid-state analogue of a Feshbach resonance in two dimensional semiconductor heterostructures. In the presence of inter-layer electron tunneling, the scattering of excitons and electrons occupying different layers can be resonantly enhanced by tuning an applied electric field. The emergence of an inter-layer Feshbach molecule modifies the optical excitation spectrum, and can be understood in terms of Fe…
Collisional dynamics of solitary matter waves of superfluid hard core bosons, consisting of dark and bright non-linear waves as well as supersonic periodic trains, reveals remarkable richness and coherence, with the phase of the condensate playing a key role. Depending upon the condensate density and their relative velocity, two distinctive collisional types emerge: the intuitively expected repulsive collisions due to the hard core boson constraint; and, also collisions in which they "pass through" one another. In addition to confirming the soliton status of both bright and dark solitary waves…
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances were employed to associate cold diatomic molecules in a series of experiments involving both atomic Bose as well as two spin component Fermi gases. This review illustrates theoretical concepts of both the particular nature of the highly excited Feshbach molecules produced and the techniques for their association from unbound atom pairs. Coupled channels theory provides the rigorous formulation of the microscopic physics of Feshbach resonances in cold gases. Concepts of dressed versus bare energy states, universal properties of Feshbach molecules, as wel…
The many-body dissipative flow induced by a mobile aussian impurity harmonically oscillating within a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated. For very {small and large driving frequencies} the superfluid phase is preserved. Dissipation is identified, for intermediate driving frequencies, by the non-zero value of the drag force whose abrupt increase {signals the spontaneous downstream emission of an array of gray solitons. After each emission event, typically each of the solitary waves formed decays and splits into two daughter gray solitary waves that are found to be robust prop…
Photoassociation and the Feshbach resonance are, in principle, feasible means for creating a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate from an already-quantum-degenerate gas of atoms; however, mean-field shifts and irreversible decay place practical constraints on the efficient delivery of stable molecules using either mechanism alone. We therefore propose Feshbach-stimulated Raman photoproduction, i.e., a combination of magnetic and optical methods, as a viable means to collectively convert degenerate atoms into a stable molecular condensate with near-unit efficiency.
Recent Feshbach-resonance experiments with 85Rb Bose-Einstein condensates have led to a host of unexplained results: dramatic losses of condensate atoms for an across-resonance sweep of the magnetic field, a collapsing condensate with a burst of atoms emanating from the remnant condensate, increased losses for decreasing interaction times-- until short times are reached, and seemingly coherent oscillations between remnant and burst atoms. Using a simple yet realistic mean-field model, we find that rogue dissociation, molecular dissociation to noncondensate atom pairs, is strongly implicated as…
