We study collisions in an optically trapped, pure sample of ultracold Cs$_2$ molecules in various internal states. The molecular gas is created by Feshbach association from a near-degenerate atomic gas, with adjustable temperatures in the nanokelvin range. We identify several narrow loss resonances, which point to the coupling to more complex molecular states and may be interpreted as Feshbach resonances in dimer-dimer interactions. Moreover, in some molecular states we observe a surprising temperature dependence in collisional loss. This shows that the situation cannot be understood in terms of the usual simple threshold behavior for inelastic two-body collisions. We interpret this observation as further evidence for a more complex molecular structure beyond the well-understood dimer physics.
We have observed Feshbach resonances for 133Cs atoms in two different hyperfine states at ultra-low static magnetic fields by using an atomic fountain clock. The extreme sensitivity of our setup allows for high signal-to-noise-ratio observations at densities of only 2*10^7 cm^{-3}. We have reproduced these resonances using coupled-channels calculations which are in excellent agreement with our measurements. We justify that these are s-wave resonances involving weakly-bound states of the triplet molecular Hamiltonian, identify the resonant closed channels, and explain the observed multi-peak st…
We explore the scattering properties of ultracold ground-state Cs atoms at magnetic fields between 450 G (45 mT) and 1000 G. We identify 17 new Feshbach resonances, including two very broad ones near 549 G and 787 G. We measure the binding energies of several different dimer states by magnetic field modulation spectroscopy. We use least-squares fitting to these experimental results, together with previous measurements at lower field, to determine a new 6-parameter model of the long-range interaction potential, designated M2012. Coupled-channels calculations using M2012 provide an accurate mapp…
We study the dissociation of Feshbach molecules in ultracold Fermi gases with spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Since SO coupling can induce quantum transition between the Feshbach molecules and the fully polarized Fermi gas, the Feshbach molecules can be dissociated by the SO coupling. We experimentally realized this new type of dissociation in ultracold gases of 40K atoms with SO coupling created by Raman beams, and observed that the dissociation rate is highly non-monotonic on both the positive and negative Raman-detuning sides. Our results show that the dissociation of Feshbach molecules can be co…
In this chapter, we describe scattering resonance phenomena in general, and focus on the mechanism of Feshbach resonances, for which a multi-channel treatment is required. We derive the dependence of the scattering phase shift on magnetic field and collision energy. From this, the scattering length and effective range coefficient can be extracted, expressions which are particularly useful for ultracold gases.
We report on the observation of triatomic Efimov resonances in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Exploiting the wide tunability of interactions resulting from three broad Feshbach resonances in the same spin channel, we measure magnetic-field dependent three-body recombination loss. The positions of the loss resonances yield corresponding values for the three-body parameter, which in universal few-body physics is required to describe three-body phenomena and in particular to fix the spectrum of Efimov states. Our observations show a robust universal behavior with a three-body parameter that st…
We study the quench dynamics of a two-component ultracold Fermi gas from the weak into the strong interaction regime, where the short time dynamics are governed by the exponential growth rate of unstable collective modes. We obtain an effective interaction that takes into account both Pauli blocking and the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude near a Feshbach resonance. Using this interaction we analyze the competing instabilities towards Stoner ferromagnetism and pairing.
We describe the formation of fermionic NaLi Feshbach molecules from an ultracold mixture of bosonic 23Na and fermionic 6Li. Precise magnetic field sweeps across a narrow Feshbach resonance at 745 G result in a molecule conversion fraction of 5% for our experimental densities and temperatures, corresponding to a molecule number of 5*10^4. The observed molecular decay ifetime is 1.3 ms after removing free Li and Na atoms from the trap.
Experimental control of magnetic Fano-Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{40}$K Fermi gases, using radio-frequency (RF) fields, is demonstrated. Spectroscopic measurements are made of three molecular levels within 50 MHz of the atomic continuum, along with their variation with magnetic field. Modifying the scattering properties by an RF field is shown by measuring the loss profile versus magnetic field. This work provides the high accuracy locations of ground molecular states near the s-wave Fano-Feshbach resonance, which can be used to study the crossover regime from a Bose-Einstein condensat…
We perform Feshbach spectroscopy in an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{40}$K with different spin-state combinations. We have observed 24 new interspecies Feshbach resonances at magnetic field up to 350 G. A full coupled-channel calculation is performed to assign these resonances. Among them, 12 resonances are identified as d-wave Feshbach resonances. These d-wave Feshbach resonances are about 5 G systematically smaller than the predications based on previous model potential. Taking into account these new experimental results, we improve the Born-Oppenheimer potentials between Na and K, a…
We use laser light near-resonant with a molecular bound-to-bound transition to control a magnetic Feshbach resonance in ultracold Fermi gases of $^{40}$K atoms. The spectrum of excited molecular states is measured by applying a laser field that couples the ground Feshbach molecular state to electronically excited molecular states. Nine strong bound-to-bound resonances are observed below the $^{2}P_{1/2}+^{2}S_{1/2}$ threshold. We use radio-frequency spectroscopy to characterize the laser-dressed bound state near a specific bound-to-bound resonance and show clearly the shift of the magnetic Fes…
We report the creation of ultracold bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules via magneto-association. By ramping the magnetic field across an interspecies Feshbach resonance, at least 4000 molecules can be produced out of the near degenerate ultracold mixture. Fast loss due to inelastic atom-molecule collisions is observed, which limits the pure molecule number, after residual atoms removal, to 1700. The pure molecule sample can live for 21.8(8) ms in the optical trap, long enough for future molecular spectroscopy studies toward coherently transferring to the singlet ro-vibrational ground…
We discuss the collective modes in an alkaline-earth Fermi gas close to an orbital Feshbach resonance. Unlike the usual Feshbach resonance, the orbital Feshbach resonance in alkaline-earth atoms realizes a two-band superfluid system where the fermionic nature of both the open and the closed channel has to be taken into account. We show that apart from the usual Anderson-Bogoliubov mode which corresponds to the oscillation of total density, there also appears the long-sought Leggett mode corresponding to the oscillation of relative density between the two channels. The existence of the phonon a…
We report on the formation of ultracold fermionic Feshbach molecules of $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K, the first fermionic molecule that is chemically stable in its ground state. The lifetime of the nearly degenerate molecular gas exceeds 100 ms in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonance. The measured dependence of the molecular binding energy on the magnetic field demonstrates the open-channel character of the molecules over a wide field range and implies significant singlet admixture. This will enable efficient transfer into the singlet vibrational ground state, resulting in a stable molecular Fermi gas …
We report the observation of a dimer-dimer inelastic collision resonance for ultracold Feshbach molecules made of bosonic sodium and rubidium atoms. This resonance, which we attribute to the crossing of the dimer-dimer threshold with a heteronuclear tetramer state, manifests itself as a pronounced inelastic loss peak of dimers when the interspecies scattering length between the constituent atoms is tuned. Near this resonance, a strong modification of the temperature dependence of the dimer-dimer scattering is observed. Our result provides insight into the heteronuclear four-body system consist…
We describe two-field optical techniques to control interactions in Feshbach resonances for two-body scattering in ultra-cold gases. These techniques create a molecular dark state in the closed channel of a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance, greatly suppressing optical scattering compared to single optical field methods. The dark-state method enables control of the effective range, by creating narrow features that modify the energy dependence of the scattering phase shift, as well as control of the elastic and inelastic parts of the zero-energy s-wave scattering amplitude. We determine t…
We investigate three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance in a gas of ultracold 7Li atoms prepared in the absolute ground state and perform a comparison with previously reported results of a different nuclear-spin state [N. Gross et.al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 163202, (2009)]. We extend the previously reported universality in three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance to the absolute ground state. We show that the positions and widths of recombination minima and Efimov resonances are identical for both states which indicates that the short-range physics is nuclear-s…
We present investigations of the formation rate and collisional stability of lithium Feshbach molecules in an ultracold three-component mixture composed of two resonantly interacting fermionic 6-Li spin states and bosonic 174-Yb. We observe long molecule lifetimes (> 100 ms) even in the presence of a large ytterbium bath and extract reaction rate coefficients of the system. We find good collisional stability of the mixture in the unitary regime, opening new possibilities for studies and probes of strongly interacting quantum gases in contact with a bath species.
We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground…
We present a study of interspecies Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{7}$Li-$^{133}$Cs Bose-Bose mixtures. We locate ten interspecies resonances in three different spin-state combinations. By comparing to coupled-channel calculations, we assign six of the resonances to $s$-wave channels and the rest to $p$-wave channels. We use the $s$-wave resonances to refine the ground-state potentials of LiCs in the coupled-channel calculations and then obtain an accurate characterization of the scattering and bound-state properties of the mixtures. Our results will be useful for future experiments with u…
We show that radiofrequency (RF) radiation may be used to create Feshbach resonances in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms at desired magnetic fields that are convenient for atomic cooling and degeneracy. For the case of $^{39}$K+$^{133}$Cs, where there are no RF-free resonances in regions where Cs may be cooled to degeneracy, we show that a resonance may be created near 21~G with 69.2~MHz RF radiation. This resonance is almost lossless with circularly polarized RF, and the molecules created are long-lived even with plane-polarized RF.
We investigate ultracold collisions in a novel mixture of $^6$Li and $^{53}$Cr fermionic atoms, discovering more than 50 interspecies Feshbach resonances via loss spectroscopy. Building a full coupled-channel model, we unambiguously characterize the $^{6}$Li-$^{53}$Cr scattering properties and yield predictions for other isotopic pairs. In particular, we identify various Feshbach resonances that enable the controlled tuning of elastic $s$- and $p$-wave $^{6}$Li-$^{53}$Cr interactions. Our studies thus make lithium-chromium mixtures emerge as optimally-suited platforms for the experimental sear…
Helium atoms in the metastable $2^3{S_{1}}$ state (He$^*$) have unique advantages for ultracold atomic experiments. However, there is no known accessible Feshbach resonance in He$^*$, which could be used to manipulate the scattering length and hence unlock several new experimental possiblities. Previous experimental and theoretical studies for He$^*$ have produced contradictory results. We aimed to resolve this discrepancy with a theoretical search for Feshbach resonances, using a new close-coupled model of He$^*$ collisions in the presence of an external magnetic field. Several resonances wer…
We observe new Feshbach resonances in ultracold mixtures of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms in the $^{85}$Rb$|2, +2\rangle$+$^{87}$Rb$|1, +1\rangle$ and $^{85}$Rb$|2, -2\rangle$+$^{87}$Rb$|1, -1\rangle$ scattering channels. The positions and properties of the resonances are predicted and characterized using the semi-analytic multichannel quantum-defect theory by Gao. Of particular interest, a number of broad entrance-channel dominated p-wave resonances are identified, implicating exciting opportunities for studying a variety of p-wave interaction dominated physics.
We have studied magnetic Feshbach resonances in an ultracold sample of Na prepared in the absolute hyperfine ground state. We report on the observation of three s-, eight d-, and three g-wave Feshbach resonances, including a more precise determination of two known s-wave resonances, and one s-wave resonance at a magnetic field exceeding 200mT. Using a coupled-channels calculation we have improved the sodium ground-state potentials by taking into account these new experimental data, and derived values for the scattering lengths. In addition, a description of the molecular states leading to the …
We observe interspecies Feshbach resonances due to s-wave bound states in ultracold $^{39}$K-$^{133}$Cs scattering for three different spin mixtures. The resonances are observed as joint atom loss and heating of the K sample. We perform least-squares fits to obtain improved K-Cs interaction potentials that reproduce the observed resonances, and carry out coupled-channel calculations to characterize the scattering and bound-state properties for $^{39}$K-Cs, $^{40}$K-Cs and $^{41}$K-Cs. Our results open up the possibilities of tuning interactions in K-Cs atomic mixtures and of producing ultracol…
We measure higher partial wave Feshbach resonances in an ultracold mixture of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs by magnetic field dependent atom-loss spectroscopy. For the $p$-wave Feshbach resonances we observe triplet structures corresponding to different projections of the pair rotation angular momentum onto the external magnetic field axis. We attribute the splittings to the spin-spin and spin-rotation couplings by modelling the observation using a full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with an oversimplified model, estimating the spin-rotation coupling by describing the weakly…
We report a thorough investigation of finite-temperature effects on three-body recombination near a triatomic Efimov resonance in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Our measurements cover a wide range from a near-ideal realization of the zero-temperature limit to a strongly temperature-dominated regime. The experimental results are analyzed within a recently introduced theoretical model based on a universal zero-range theory. The temperature-induced shift of the resonance reveals a contribution that points to an energy-dependence of the three-body parameter. We interpret this contribution in te…
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances in ultracold atomic systems are chiefly identified and characterized through time consuming atom loss spectroscopy. We describe an off-resonant dispersive optical probing technique to rapidly locate Feshbach resonances and demonstrate the method by locating four resonances of $^{87}$Rb, between the $|\rm{F} = 1, \rm{m_F}=1 \rangle$ and $|\rm{F} = 2, \rm{m_F}=0 \rangle$ states. Despite the loss features being $\lesssim0.1$ G wide, we require only 21 experimental runs to explore a magnetic field range >18 G, where $1~\rm{G}=10^{-4}$ T. The resonances cons…
We theoretically investigate strong-coupling properties of an ultracold Fermi gas with an orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR). Including tunable pairing interaction associated with an OFR within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink (NSR), we examine the occupation of the closed channel. We show that, although the importance of the closed channel is characteristic of the system with an OFR, the occupation number of the closed channel is found to actually be very small at the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, in the whole BCS (Bardeen…
Ultracold atomic gases have realised numerous paradigms of condensed matter physics where control over interactions has crucially been afforded by tunable Feshbach resonances. So far, the characterisation of these Feshbach resonances has almost exclusively relied on experiments in the threshold regime near zero energy. Here we use a laser-based collider to probe a narrow magnetic Feshbach resonance of rubidium above threshold. By measuring the overall atomic loss from colliding clouds as a function of magnetic field, we track the energy-dependent resonance position. At higher energy, our colli…
We have observed 26 interspecies Feshbach resonances at fields up to 2050 G in ultracold $^6$Li+$^{23}$Na mixtures for different spin-state combinations. Applying the asymptotic bound-state model to assign the resonances, we have found that most resonances have d-wave character. This analysis serves as guidance for a coupled-channel calculation, which uses modified interaction potentials to describe the positions of the Feshbach resonances well within the experimental uncertainty and to calculate their widths. The scattering length derived from the improved interaction potentials is experiment…
We study the superfluid state of atomic Fermi gases using a BCS-BEC crossover theory. Our approach emphasizes non-condensed fermion pairs which strongly hybridize with their (Feshbach-induced) molecular boson counterparts. These pairs lead to pseudogap effects above $T_c$ and non-BCS characteristics below. We discuss how these effects influence the experimental signatures of superfluidity.
We have observed 69 $^{41}$K-$^6$Li interspecies Feshbach resonances including 13 elastic p-wave resonances and 6 broad d-wave resonances of $^{41}$K atoms in different spin-state combinations at fields up to 600~G. Multi-channel quantum defect theory calculation is performed to assign these resonances and the results show perfect agreement with experimental values after improving input parameters. The observed broad p- and d- wave resonances display a full resolved multiplet structure. They may serve as important simulators to nonzero partial wave dominated physics.
Tunability of effective two body interactions near Feshbach resonances is a powerful experimental tool in systems of ultracold atoms. It has been used to explore a variety of intriguing phenomena in recent experiments. However not all of the many-body properties of such systems can be understood in terms of effective models with contact interaction given by the scattering length of the two particles in vacuum. For example, when a two component Fermi mixture is quenched to the BEC side of the Feshbach resonance, a positive scattering length suggests that interactions are repulsive and thus coll…
A model of two 1D ideal Bose gases A and B with strong AB attractions induced by a p-wave AB Feshbach resonance is studied. The model is solved exactly by a Bose-Bose duality mapping, and it is shown that there is no A-component or B-component Bose-Einstein condensation and no AB-pair off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), but both AA-pair and BB-pair ODLRO. After generalization by adding even-wave AA and BB repulsion and reducing the strength of the odd-wave AB attraction by Feshbach resonance detuning, a quantum phase transition occurs between a phase with AB contact nodes and one with no su…
We report the observation of resonance-like loss in the trap population of ultracold dysprosium as a function of magnetic field, which we attribute to anisotropy-induced Fano-Feshbach resonances arising from Dy's large magnetic dipole moment and nonzero electronic orbital angular momentum. We recorded these resonances for four different isotopes, three bosonic and one fermionic, over a field range of 0-6 G and show that the number of resonances changes significantly as a function of temperature, even in the nK regime. Most of the observed resonances are of very narrow width. The fermionic isot…
We optimize a collision-induced cooling process for ultracold atoms in the nondegenerate regime. It makes use of a Feshbach resonance, instead of rf radiation in evaporative cooling, to selectively expel hot atoms from a trap. Using functional minimization we analytically show that for the optimal cooling process the resonance energy must be tuned such that it linearly follows the temperature. Here, optimal cooling is defined as maximizing the phase-space density after a fixed cooling duration. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical Monte-Carlo simulations. In order to simulate more…
A comprehensive search for "broad" Feshbach resonances (FRs) in all possible combinations of stable alkali-metal atoms is carried out, using a multi-channel quantum-defect theory assisted by the analytic wave functions for a long-range van-der-Waals potential. A number of new "broad" $s$-, $p$- and $d$-wave FRs in the lowest-energy scattering channels, which are stable against two-body dipolar spin-flip loss, are predicted and characterized. Our results also show that "broad" FRs of $p$- or $d$-wave type that are free of two-body loss do not exist between fermionic alkali-metal atoms for magne…
Magnetically-tunable Feshbach resonances are an indispensable tool for experiments with atomic quantum gases. We report on twenty thus far unpublished Feshbach resonances and twenty one further probable Feshbach resonances in spin mixtures of ultracold fermionic 40 K with temperatures well below 100 nK. In particular, we locate a broad resonance at B=389.6 G with a magnetic width of 26.4 G. Here 1 G=10^-4 T. Furthermore, by exciting low-energy spin waves, we demonstrate a novel means to precisely determine the zero crossing of the scattering length for this broad Feshbach resonance. Our findin…
Collisional resonances are an important tool which has been used to modify interactions in ultracold gases, for realizing novel Hamiltonians in quantum simulations, for creating molecules from atomic gases and for controlling chemical reactions. So far, such resonances have been observed for atom-atom collisions, atom-molecule collisions and collisions between Feshbach molecules which are very weakly bound. Whether such resonances exist for ultracold ground state molecules has been debated due to the possibly high density of states and/or rapid decay of the resonant complex. Here we report a v…
We consider a fully polarized ultracold Fermi gas interacting through a p-wave Feshbach resonance. Using a two-channel model, we find the effective potential at the point where the p-wave scattering length goes to zero. Here the effective interaction provides attraction and one can therefore ask about the stability of the system. We calculate the energy density of the system in the Thomas-Fermi approximation, determine the profile of the gas, and the critical number of particle in the system as function of the relevant interaction parameters. The instability can be deduced from a simple breath…
We consider finite-range effects when the scattering length goes to zero near a magnetically controlled Feshbach resonance. The traditional effective-range expansion is badly behaved at this point and we therefore introduce an effective potential that reproduces the full T-matrix. To lowest order the effective potential goes as momentum squared times a factor that is well-defined as the scattering length goes to zero. The potential turns out to be proportional to the background scattering length squared times the background effective range for the resonance. We proceed to estimate the applicab…
We have studied interspecies scattering in an ultracold mixture of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs atoms, both in their lowest-energy spin states. The three-body loss signatures of 30 incoming s- and p-wave magnetic Feshbach resonances over the range 0 to 667 G have been catalogued. Magnetic field modulation spectroscopy was used to observe molecular states bound by up to 2.5 MHz$\times h$. Magnetic moment spectroscopy along the magneto-association pathway from 197 to 182 G gives results consistent with the observed and calculated dependence of the binding energy on magnetic field strength. We have c…
The spectrum of two bosons and two fermions in a trap is calculated using a correlated-Gaussian basis throughout the range of a broad Fano-Feshbach resonance. The calculations provide a few-body solution to the magneto-association of fermionic Feshbach molecules. This solution is used to study the time evolution of the system as the scattering length changes, mimicking experiments with Bose-Fermi mixtures near Fano-Feshbach resonances. The structure of avoided crossings in the few-body spectrum enables an interpretation of the dynamics of the system as a sequence of Landau-Zener transitions. T…
In the ultracold gases of alkali-earth (like) atoms, a new type of Feshbach resonance, i.e., the orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR), has been proposed and experimentally observed in ultracold $^{173}$Yb atoms. When the OFR of the $^{173}$Yb atoms occurs, the energy gap between the open and closed channels is smaller by two orders of magnitudes than the van der Waals energy. As a result, quantitative accurate results for the low-energy two-body problems can be obtained via multi-channel quantum defect theory (MQDT), which is based on the exact solution of the Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation wit…
We investigate magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances between ultracold europium atoms and between europium and alkali-metal atoms using multichannel quantum scattering calculations. For ultracold gases of europium atoms both homonuclear $^{153}$Eu+$^{153}$Eu and heteronuclear $^{151}$Eu+$^{153}$Eu systems are studied. Calculations for mixtures of europium and alkali-metal atoms are carried out for prototype systems of $^{153}$Eu+$^{87}$Rb and $^{153}$Eu+$^7$Li. We analyze the prospects for the control of scattering properties, observation of quantum chaotic behavior, and magnetoassociation …
We study enhanced magneto-association of atoms into weakly-bound molecules near a Feshbach resonance using a quench preparatory stage. In anticipation of experiments with NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory aboard the International Space Station, we assume as a baseline a dual-species ($^{87}$Rb and $^{41}$K) gas in a parameter regime enabled by a microgravity environment. This includes subnanokelvin temperatures and dual-species gases at densities as low as 10$^8$/cm$^3$. Our studies indicate that, in such a regime, traditional magneto-association schemes are inefficient due to the weak coupling betw…
We report the measurement of collision rate coefficient for collisions between ultracold Cs atoms and low energy Cs+ ions. The experiments are performed in a hybrid trap consisting of a magneto-optical trap (MOT) for Cs atoms and a Paul trap for Cs+ ions. The ion-atom collisions impart kinetic energy to the ultracold Cs atoms resulting in their escape from the shallow MOT and, therefore, in a reduction in the number of Cs atoms in the MOT. By monitoring, using fluorescence measurements, the Cs atom number and the MOT loading dynamics and then fitting the data to a rate equation model, the ion-…
We report on the design, implementation, and performance of a compact two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D MOT) for cesium. In a small-volume vacuum chamber, the setup uses cesium dispensers in close proximity to the trapping region of the 2D MOT and operates at low vapor pressures in the $10^{-9}$ torr range. We achieve a cold atom flux of $4 \times 10^8$ atoms/s that is comparable to the performance of more complex atomic sources. The setup is simple to construct and can be adapted to a broad range of atomic species.
We study the collisional properties of an ultracold mixture of cesium atoms and dimers close to a Feshbach resonance near 550G in the regime of positive $s$-wave scattering lengths. We observe an atom-dimer loss resonance that is related to Efimov's scenario of trimer states. The resonance is found at a value of the scattering length that is different from a previous observation at low magnetic fields. This indicates non-universal behavior of the Efimov spectrum for positive scattering lengths. We compare our observations with predictions from effective field theory and with a recent model bas…
Most of the current theories on the p-wave superfluid in cold atomic gases are based on the effective-range theory for the two-body scattering, where the low energy p-wave scattering amplitude $f_1(k)$ is given by $% f_1(k)=-1/[ik+1/(\mathcal{V}k^2)+1/\mathcal{R}]$, where $k$ is the incident momentum, and $\mathcal{V}$ and $\mathcal{R}$ are the $k$-independent scattering volume and effective-range, respectively. However, due to the long-range nature of the van der Waals interaction between two colliding ultracold atoms, the p-wave scattering amplitude of the two atoms is not described by the e…
We report on deviations beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in the potassium inter-atomic potentials. Identifying three up-to-now unknown $d$-wave Feshbach resonances, we significantly improve the understanding of the $^{39}$K inter-atomic potentials. Combining these observations with the most recent data on known inter- and intra-isotope Feshbach resonances, we show that Born-Oppenheimer corrections can be determined from atomic collisional properties alone and that significant differences between the homo- and heteronuclear case appear.
We report on the detection of extremely narrow Feshbach resonances by employing a Mott-insulating state for cesium atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The Mott insulator protects the atomic ensemble from high background three-body losses in a magnetic field region where a broad Efimov resonance otherwise dominates the atom loss in bulk samples. Our technique reveals three ultra-narrow and previously unobserved Feshbach resonances in this region with widths below $\approx 10\,μ$G, measured via Landau-Zener-type molecule formation and confirmed by theoretical predictions. For comparati…
