At ambient pressure CaFe2As2 has been found to undergo a first order phase transition from a high temperature, tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase upon cooling through T ~ 170 K. With the application of pressure this phase transition is rapidly suppressed and by ~ 0.35 GPa it is replaced by a first order phase transition to a low temperature collapsed tetragonal, non-magnetic phase. Further application of pressure leads to an increase of the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition temperature, with it crossing room temperature by ~ 1.7 GPa. Given the exceptionally large and anisotropic change in unit cell dimensions associated with the collapsed tetragonal phase, the state of the pressure medium (liquid or solid) at the transition temperature has profound effects on the low temperature state of the sample. For He-gas cells the pressure is as close to hydrostatic as possible and the transitions are sharp and the sample appears to be single phase at low temperatures. For liquid media cells at temperatures below media freezing, the CaFe2As2 transforms when it is encased by a frozen media and enters into a low temperature multi-crystallographic-phase state, leading to what appears to be a strain stabilized superconducting state at low temperatures.
We studied the evolution of superconductivity (sc) and antiferromagnetism (afm) in the heavy fermion compound CePt_3Si with hydrostatic pressure. We present a pressure-temperature phase diagram established by electrical transport measurements. Pressure shifts the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, to lower temperatures. Antiferromagnetism is suppressed at a critical pressure P_c=0.5 GPa.
We report on magnetization, specific heat and resistivity experiments on single crystals of the novel heavy Fermion compound Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$. At ambient pressure the compound exhibits two successive transitions at T$_{1}$ = 1.63 K and T$_{\mathrm {N}}$ = 1.49 K into incommensurate and commensurate local moment antiferromagnetic states, respectively, before becoming superconducting below T$_{\mathrm {c}}$ = 0.42 K. The large values of dB$_{\mathrm {c2}}$/dT and B$_{\mathrm {c2}}$ = 2.8 T imply that heavy quasiparticles form the Cooper pairs. Thus, Ce$_{3}$PdIn$_{11}$ is the first ambient pres…
We present a theoretical study on the superconductivity in β'-(BEDT-TTF)_2ICl_2 at Tc=14.2K under high hydrostatic pressure found by Taniguchi et al., which is the highest record among organic superconductors. Its electronic structure is well expressed by the anisotropic triangular lattice Hubbard model at half filling. In the present work, we study this effective model by using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation. In the obtained phase diagram, the superconductivity with d_{x^2-y^2} like symmetry is realized next to the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating phase, as a result of the 1D-…
We report single crystal growth of the reentrant superconductor Tm_2Fe_3Si_5, and measurements of the anisotropic static magnetic susceptibility χ(T) and isothermal magnetization M(H), ac susceptibility χ_ac(T), electrical resistivity ρ(T) and heat capacity C(T) at ambient pressure and χ_ac(T) at high pressure. The magnetic susceptibility along the c-axis χ_c(T) shows a small maximum around 250 K and does not follow the Curie-Weiss behavior while the magnetic susceptibility along the a-axis χ_a(T) follows a Curie-Weiss behavior between 130 K and 300 K with a Weiss temperature θand an effective…
Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements were performed at ambient pressure on high-quality single crystal specimens of CeRhIn5 down to ultra-low temperatures. We report signatures of an anomaly observed in all measured quantities consistent with a bulk phase transition to a superconducting state at T_c=110 mK. Occurring far below the onset of antiferromagnetism at T_N=3.8 K, this transition appears to involve a significant portion of the available low-temperature density of electronic states, exhibiting an entropy change in line with that found in other mem…
I briefly mention a previous claim of room temperature superconductivity ( arXiv:0905.3524) in Ag-based oxide material and compare their results with the most recent claim of ambient temperature superconductivity in arXiv:1807.08572. In both cases, an electrical transition to low resistance state and diamagnetism are observed. Silver is a common ingredient in both claims. Does it mean that silver holds the key to RT superconductivity or, the missing field cool data (in both reports) hint of some other physical phenomenon than superconductivity.
Recent observations of two nodeless gaps in superconducting CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ have raised intensive debates on its exact gap symmetry, while a satisfactory theoretical basis is still lacking. Here we propose a phenomenological approach to calculate the superconducting gap functions, taking into consideration both the realistic Fermi surface topology and the intra- and interband quantum critical scatterings. Our calculations yield a nodeless $s^\pm$-wave solution in the presence of strong interband pairing interaction, in good agreement with experiments. This provides a possible basis for understa…
We have successfully grown single crystalline NaFeAs with cobalt or phosphor doping. Bulk superconductivity occurs in NaFe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$As at 19 K while much higher transition temperature is observed in NaFeAs$_{0.8}$P$_{0.2}$, in which the Tc of 33 K is even higher than the highest value realized by applying pressure in NaFeAs and all other isoelectronic element substituted samples. We discuss these behaviours by comparison with 122 and 1111 systems. We hope that our findings will help improve our understanding of iron-based superconductivity.
The quasi-skutterudite superconductor Sr$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ features a pronounced anomaly in electrical resistivity at $T^*\sim$138 K. We show that the anomaly is caused by a second-order structural transition, which can be tuned to 0 K by applying physical pressure and chemical pressure via the substitution of Ca for Sr. A broad superconducting dome is centred around the structural quantum critical point. Detailed analysis of the tuning parameter dependence of $T^*$ as well as insights from lattice dynamics calculations strongly support the existence of a structural quantum critical point at …
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the incommensurate antiferromagnetic structure of CeRhIn5 is investigated with neutron diffraction using a He pressure cell. At 3.8 kbar, the staggered magnetic moment is 0.37(4) Bohr magneton per Ce at 1.6 K, which is the same as the ambient-pressure value. The Neel temperature T_N=3.8(1) K is also the same as the ambient-pressure one, although the curve of order parameter has changed by pressure. The incommensurability "delta" of the magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,"delta") has reduced from "delta"=0.297 at ambient pressure to "delta"=0.294(1) at 3.8 k…
Diamond Si is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap that is the basis of modern semiconductor technology. Although many metastable forms of Si were observed using diamond anvil cells for compression and chemical precursors for synthesis, no metallic phase at ambient conditions has been reported thus far. Here we report the prediction of pure metallic Si allotropes with open channels at ambient pressure, unlike a cubic diamond structure in covalent bonding networks. The metallic phase termed P6/m-Si6 can be obtained by removing Na after pressure release from a novel Na-Si clathrate called P…
We study the dependence on filling and pressure of the superconducting and ferromagnetic critical temperatures of the ruthenocuprates, within the two-band model. At zero pressure, we find separate regions of coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism as a function of filling, with contiguous regions merging together as pressure increases. As a function of pressure, a stronger enhancement of the magnetic phase results in a reduced pressure effect on the superconducting critical temperature. Comparison with recent experiments on the determination of the critical temperatures as a functi…

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity in LiFeAs is investigated up to 1.8 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature, T_c, decreases linearly with pressure at a rate of 1.5 K/GPa. The negative pressure coefficient of T_c and the high ambient pressure T_c indicate that LiFeAs is the high-pressure analogue of the isoelectronic SrFe_2As_2 and BaFe_2As_2.
We revealed that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the multi-component superconductor Sr2RuO4 is enhanced to 3.3 K under in-plane uniaxial pressure that reduces the tetragonal crystal symmetry. This result suggests that new superconducting phases with a one-component order parameter are induced. We have also clarified the inplane pressure direction dependence of the emergence of this higher-Tc superconducting phase: pressure along the [100] direction is more favorable than pressure along the [110] direction. This result is probably closely related to the direct shortening of the…
Diamagnetic susceptibility measurements under high hydrostatic pressure (up to 1.03 GPa) were carried out on the newly discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs(x=0.11). The transition temperature T_c, defined as the point at the maximum slope of superconducting transition, was enhanced almost linearly by hydrostatic pressure, yielding a dT_c/dP of about 1.2 K/GPa. Differential diamagnetic susceptibility curves indicate that the underlying superconducting state is complicated. It is suggested that pressure plays an important role on pushing low T_c superconducting phase toward the …
Electrical-resistivity and magnetic-susceptibility measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to p = 2.75 GPa have been performed on superconducting LiFeP. A broad superconducting (SC) region exists in the temperature - pressure (T-p) phase diagram. No indications for a spin-density-wave transition have been found, but an enhanced resistivity coefficient at low pressures hints at the presence of magnetic fluctuations. Our results show that the superconducting state in LiFeP is more robust than in the isostructural and isoelectronic LiFeAs. We suggest that this finding is related to the nearly …
Effective perpendicular electric field as a probe for interlayer pairing in ambient-pressure superconducting La$_{2.85}$Pr$_{0.15}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ thin films
A recent preprint arXiv:1807.08572 reported the observation of a transition in Ag/Au nanoparticle composites near room temperature and at ambient pressure, to a vanishingly small four-probe resistance, which was tentatively identified as a percolating superconducting transition. In this brief comment, I point out that a vanishing four-probe resistance may also emerge in non-superconducting systems near conductance percolation threshold.
In the present work, we measure the temperature dependent electrical resistivity from 300K down to 2K under applied hydrostatic pressure of upto 2.5GPa for SrFBiS2, which is the parent compound for the BiS2 based superconductors. Though the normal state resistivity of the compound decreases with pressure, the same is not superconducting down to 2K under applied pressure of up to 2.5Gpa.
We report high pressure magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on Ca_{3}Ir_{4}Sn_{13} single crystals up to 60 kbar. These measurements allow us to follow the evolution of the superconducting critical temperature T_c, the resistivity anomaly temperature T*, the superconducting coherence length and the Fermi velocity under pressure. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for Ca_{3}Ir_{4}Sn_{13} shows a dome-shaped pressure dependence of T_c. The initial rise in T_c, which is accompanied by a decrease in T*, is consistent with a reduction in the partial gappi…
We report the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ detected via the AC susceptibility method. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for TlNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, TlNi$_{2}$S$_{2}$ and TlNi$_{2}$SeS exhibits two unexpected features: (a) a sudden collapse of the superconducting state at moderate pressure for all three compositions and (b) a dome-shaped pressure dependence of $T_c$ for TlNi$_{2}$SeS. These results point to the nontrivial role of S substitution and its subtle interplay with applied pressure, as well as novel su…
We measure the electrical resistance of o-TaS3 between 1K and 300K under pressures up to 20GPa. We observe a gradual decrease of the charge density wave transition temperature with increasing pressure P following a mean-field quantum fluctuation power law with a quantum critical point at a pressure Pc = 11.5GPa. Around the quantum critical point we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature Tc = 3.1K. Such dome is similar to superconducting domes around other types of order suggesting that the QCP is directly responsible for the enhancement of supercon…

A recent preprint [arxiv:1807.08572] has reported the observation of room temperature supercondutivity in a nanostructured solid composed of gold and silver nanocrystals. Given the extraordinary and exciting nature of this claim, it is worth examining the reported data closely. In this short comment I point out a very surprising feature in the data: an identical pattern of noise for two presumably independent measurements of the magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature.
Superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric LaNiC$_2$ is expected to be induced by electron--phonon interactions due to its lack of magnetic instabilities. The non-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) behaviors found in this material call into question the long-standing idea that relates unconventional superconductivity with magnetic interactions. Here we report magnetic penetration-depth measurements in a high-purity single crystal of LaNiC$_2$ at pressures up to 2.5 GPa and temperatures down to 0.04 K. At ambient pressure and below 0.5$T_c$ the penetration depth goes as $T^4$ for the in-plane and $T^…
A unique platform for investigating the correlation between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) states in high temperature superconductors is created by the discovery of alkaline iron selenide superconductors which are composed of an AFM insulating phase and a SC phase separated spatially. Our previous studies showed that pressure can fully suppress the superconductivity of ambient-pressure superconducting phase (SC-I) and AFM order simultaneously, then induce another superconducting phase (SC-II) at higher pressure. Consequently, the connection between the two superconducting…
We have performed transverse-field muon spin relaxation (TF-$μ$SR) measurements on ambient-pressure-grown polycrystalline $\mathrm{LaO_{0.5}F_{0.5}BiS_{2}}$. From these measurements, no signature of magnetic order is found down to 25 mK. The value of the magnetic penetration depth extrapolated to 0 K is 0.89 (5) $μ$m. The temperature dependence of superconducting penetration depth is best described by either a multigap s + s-wave model with $Δ_{1}$ = 0.947 (7) meV and $Δ_{2}$ = 0.22 (4) meV or the ansiotropic s-wave model with $Δ(0)$ = 0.776 meV and anisotropic gap amplitude ratio $Δ_{min}/Δ_{…
To raise the superconducting-transition temperature (Tc) has been the driving force for the long, sustained effort in superconductivity research. Recent progress in hydrides with Tcs up to 287 K under 267 GPa has heralded a new era of room-temperature superconductivity (RTS) with immense technological promise. Indeed, RTS has lifted the temperature barrier for the ubiquitous application of superconductivity. Unfortunately, formidable pressure is required to attain such high Tcs. The most effective relief to this impasse is to remove the pressure needed while retaining the pressure-induced Tc w…
We study the possibility to apply phenomenological approach to the description of magnetic transitions in UGe$_2$ at ambient pressure with the help of Landau free energy expanded to 8th order in magnetisation. The analysis shows that for certain values of parameters in front of M4, and M6 terms in the free energy there is possibility for the appearance of two successive phase transitions between the low-magnetisation and high-magnetisation phases with the same magnetic structure. We establish the relation of the parameters in Landau energy, for which the phase transition from the disordered to…
We report the detection of unusual superconductivity up to 49 K in single crystalline CaFe2As2 via electron-doping by partial replacement of Ca by rare-earth. The superconducting transition observed suggests the possible existence of two phases: one starting at ~ 49 K, which has a low critical field ~ 4 Oe, and the other at ~ 21 K, with a much higher critical field > 5 T. Our observations are in strong contrast to previous reports of doping or pressurizing layered compounds AeFe2As2 (or Ae122), where Ae = Ca, Sr or Ba. In Ae122, hole-doping has been previously observed to generate superconduct…
We report high pressure powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies on MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca) over a range of temperatures and pressures up to about 56 GPa using a membrane diamond anvil cell. A phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase is observed in both compounds upon compression. However, at 300 (33) K in the Ba-compound the transition occurs at 26 (29) GPa, which is a much higher pressure than 1.7 (0.3) GPa at 300 (40) K in the Ca-compound, due to its larger volume. It is important to note that the transition in both compounds occurs when they are compressed to almost the same value o…
We predict that simple metals and early transition metals that become superconducting under high pressures will show a change in sign of their Hall coefficient from negative to positive under pressure. If verified, this will strongly suggest that hole carriers play a fundamental role in `conventional' superconductivity, as predicted by the theory of hole superconductivity.
