We predict that simple metals and early transition metals that become superconducting under high pressures will show a change in sign of their Hall coefficient from negative to positive under pressure. If verified, this will strongly suggest that hole carriers play a fundamental role in `conventional' superconductivity, as predicted by the theory of hole superconductivity.
We have studied the electronic transport properties of homogeneously disordered superconducting tantalum thin films in magnetic fields. The films exhibit three distinct transport regimes in the zero temperature limit which we identify as superconducting, metallic, and insulating phases. The metallic phase is unexpected. The transport characteristics of this metallic phase are found to be similar to those of MoGe films and high mobility dilute two-dimensional electrons or holes confined in semiconductor interface or transistor geometry.
To examine the thermodynamic properties of Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$ compounds with metallic CuO double chains, we measured the specific heats of superconducting and non-superconducting polycrystalline samples at low temperatures (1.8-40 K) under various magnetic fields (up to 9 T). In the as-sintered non-superconducting sample, a $λ-$like enhancement in the specific heat measurement appeared near the antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{N}=17$ K. In contrast, the reduced superconducting sample with $T_{c,on}=26.5$ K exhibited no obvious superconducting anomaly in its specific…
We investigate the possibility of finding a zero-temperature metallic phase in granular superconducting films. We are able to identify the breakdown of the conventional treatment of these systems as dissipative Bose systems. We do not find a metallic state at zero temperature. At finite temperatures, we find that the system exhibit crossover behaviour which may have implications for the analysis of experimental results. We also investigate the effect of vortex dissipation in these systems.
Electrons confined to two dimensions display an unexpected diversity of behaviors as they are cooled to absolute zero. Noninteracting electrons are predicted to eventually "localize" into an insulating ground state, and it has long been supposed that electron correlations stabilize only one other phase: superconductivity. However, many two-dimensional (2D) superconducting materials have shown surprising evidence for metallic behavior, where the electrical resistivity saturates in the zero-temperature limit, the nature of this unexpected metallic state remains under intense scrutiny. We report …
Superconducting tips of YBa$_{2} $Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-x}$ were used to perform point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy on half-metallic CrO$_{2}$ thin films. At 4.2K, strong suppression of the d-wave Andreev reflection characteristics was observed, consistent with the high spin polarization of CrO$_{2}$. Our technique was validated by comparison with data taken on non-magnetic Au films, and with data taken by superconducting Pb tips. The point contacts were estimated to be $\lesssim$ 10nm in size, attesting to their ballistic and microscopic nature. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of u…
Superconducting pairing of electrons in nanoscale metallic particles with discrete energy levels and a fixed number of electrons is described by the reduced BCS model Hamiltonian. We show that this model is integrable by the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The eigenstates, spectrum, conserved operators, integrals of motion, and norms of wave functions are obtained. Furthermore, the quantum inverse problem is solved, meaning that form factors and correlation functions can be explicitly evaluated. Closed form expressions are given for the form factors that describe superconducting pairing.
The periodic response of a metallic or a superconducting ring to an external magnetic flux is one of the most evident manifestations of quantum mechanics. It is generally understood that the oscillation period hc/2e in the superconducting state is half the period hc/e in the metallic state, because the supercurrent is carried by Cooper pairs with a charge 2e. On the basis of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory we discuss, in which cases this simple interpretation is valid and when a more careful analysis is needed. In fact, the knowledge of the oscillation period of the current in the ring pr…
We present a first-principles implementation of the stochastic path-integral approach proposed by Liu et al. [H. Liu, Y. Yuan, D. Liu, X.-Z. Li, and J. Shi, Phys. Rev. Research 2, 013340 (2020)] for estimating the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of a liquid. The implementation is based on the all-electron projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method. We generalize Liu et al.'s formalism to accommodate the pseudo-description of electron states in the PAW method. A formula for constructing the overlap operator of the PAW method is proposed to eliminate errors due to the incompleteness of…
We address a recent experiment in which a strong decrease of the resistance of a superconducting film has been observed when a remote unbiased gate was placed above the film. Here we explain the experimental finding as a suppression of the vortex tunneling due to the Orthogonality Catastrophe of the electrons inside the gate. We interpret the change in the resistance of the film as a "metal-insulator" transition in the system of vortices induced by the gate.
It is shown that a non-magnetic metallic band in the presence of an antiferromagnetic background coupled only by the exchange interaction develops a superconducting instability similar to the one described by BCS theory plus additional terms that strongly renormalize the spin excitation spectra. A Bardeen-Pines-like hole-hole interaction Hamiltonian, mediated by magnetic excitations, is deduced from a microscopic model of a fermion band and a spin band that interact with each other only via the exchange interaction. The theory shows the appearance of an attractive interaction when the Fermi ve…
This article gives a contemporary and to some extent pedagogical review of the current theoretical understanding of the formation of the superconducting state in metallic systems with a variable density of carriers. We make an attempt to describe the crossover from the Bose-Einstein condensation type (small densities) to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer one (large densities). The functional methods are used throughout the treatment. The most of the results are considered in a review form for the first time. Some of them (in particular, the possible opening of a pseudogap) are used to explain the …
Time-resolved terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is an ideal tool for probing photoinduced nonequilibrium metallic and superconducting states. Here, we focus on the interpretation of the two-dimensional response function $Σ(ω;t)$ that it measures, examining whether it provides an accurate snapshot of the instantaneous optical conductivity, $σ(ω;t)$. For the Drude model with a time-dependent carrier density, we show that $Σ(ω;t)$ is not simply related to $σ(ω;t)$. The difference in the two response functions is most pronounced when the momentum relaxation rate of photocarriers is long…
We study spin switching effects in finite-size superconducting multivalve structures. We examine $\rm F_1F_2SF_3$ and $\rm F_1F_2SF_3F_4$ hybrids where a singlet superconductor ($\rm S$) layer is sandwiched among ferromagnet ($\rm F$) layers with differing thicknesses and magnetization orientations. Our results reveal a considerable number of experimentally viable spin valve configurations that lead to on-off switching of the superconducting state. For $\rm S$ widths on the order of the superconducting coherence length $ξ_0$, non-collinear magnetization orientations in adjacent $\rm F$ layers …
In rare-earth doped single crystalline CaFe2As2, the mysterious small volume fraction which superconducts up to 49 K, much higher than the bulk Tc ~ 30s K, has prompted a long search for a hidden variable that could enhance the Tc by more than 30% in iron-based superconductors of the same structure. Here we report a chemical, structural, and magnetic study of CaFe2As2 systematically doped with La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. Coincident with the high Tc phase, we find extreme magnetic anisotropy, accompanied by an unexpected doping-independent Tc and equally unexpected superparamagnetic clusters associated…
The pair condensation energy of a finite-size superconducting particle is studied as a function of two control parameters. The first control parameter is the shape of the particle, and the second parameter is a position-dependent impurity introduced in the particle. Whereas the former parameter is known to induce strong fluctuations in the condensation energy, the latter control parameter is found to be a more gentle probe of the pairing correlations.
A variational approach is used to study the superconductor-insulator transition in two-band granular superconducting films using a resistance-shunted Josephson junction array model in this letter. We show that a zero-temperature metallic phase may exist between the superconducting and insulator phases which is absent in normal single band granular superconducting films. The metallic phase may be observable in some dirty pnictide superconductor films.
We comment on the model proposed by Orenstein and Dodge in arXiv:1506.06758v1, which describes time-domain terahertz measurements of transiently generated, high-electron-mobility (or superconducting) phases of solids. The authors' main conclusion is that time-domain terahertz spectroscopy does not measure a response function that is mathematically identical to the transient optical conductivity. We show that although this is correct, the difference between the measured response function and the microscopic optical conductivity is small for realistic experimental parameters. We also show that f…
We present the Usadel theory describing the superconducting proximity effect in heterostructures with a half-metallic layer. It is shown that the full spin polarization inside the half-metals gives rise to the giant triplet spin-valve effect in superconductor (S) - ferromagnet (F) - half-metal (HM) trilayers as well as to the $φ_0$-junction formation in the S/F/HM/F/S systems. In addition, we consider the exactly solvable model of the S/F/HM trilayers of atomic thickness and demonstrate that it reproduces the main features of the spin-valve effect found within the Usadel approach. Our results …
We have introduced a Coulomb correlated normal state to study the superconducting pairing with a Fermi liquid like normal phase background in a 3 dimensional system. The role of the Coulomb correlation has been actively incorporated by means of Gutzwiller projection scheme, in the presence of phonon mediated attractive electron-electron interaction throughout the entire regime of its applicability. We variationally modulate the Coulomb correlation strength from the weak to the strong regime in our calculational procedure. The main highlight of our results is the appearance of a '2-gap-like' st…
Electrical resistivities, Hall coefficients and thermoelectric powers have been measured for polycrystalline samples of LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx (x=0.11) with various values of y. The results show that there exists clear distinction of these transport behaviors between the superconducting and nonsuperconducting metallic regions of y divided by the boundary value yc~0.05. We have found that the behaviors in both regions are very similar to those of high-Tc Cu oxides in the corresponding phases. If they reflect, as in the case of Cu oxides, effects of strong magnetic fluctuations, the energy scale of …
The thermodynamic properties of the superconducting state induced in metallic molecular hydrogen under the influence of pressure 347 GPa were determined. In particular, it has been shown that the critical temperature ($T_{C}$) changes in the range from 120 K to 90 K for $μ^{*}\in<0.08,0.15>$, where $μ^{*}$ is the value of the Coulomb pseudopotential. Next, the energy gap near the temperature of zero Kelvin ($2Δ(0)$) was calculated. It has been stated, that the dimensionless ratio $2Δ(0)/k_{B}T_{C}$ slightly decreases with the increase of $μ^{*}$ from 3.98 to 3.84. In the last step, the ratio o…
To examine the electronic phase diagram of superconducting CuO double chains, we report the effect of external pressure on the magneto-transport properties in superconducting and non-superconducting polycrystalline samples of Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$ at low temperatures (1.8-40 K) under various magnetic fields (up to 14 T). In the as-sintered non-superconducting sample, the magneto-resistance (MR) follows a power law of $H^{3/2}$ at low temperatures, which is in no agreement with the $H^{2}$ dependence of MR in the PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$ system. The negative pressure dependence of…
We report the magnetotransport and $dc$ magnetic susceptibility of the polycrystalline samples of Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$, to examine the effect of magnetic field on the superconducting phase of the metallic CuO double chain. The resistive critical magnetic field is estimated to be about 21 T at low temperatures from the resistive transition data. On the other hand, the corresponding critical field determined from the magnetization measurements gives rise to a very low value of $\sim 0.3$T at 2 K. These discrepancies in the magnetic response between the resistivity and magnetization…
The theoretical model for the quasiparticle self-energy in HTSC is proposed, which is based on the forward scattering peak in the electron-phonon (EPI) interaction. By assuming that EPI dominates, the model explains qualitatively and in a consistent way the recent ARPES results. The latter show a kink in the normal state quasiparticle energy at 70 meV in the nodal direction, which is (surprisingly) not shifted in the superconducting (SC) state, while the singularity at 40 meV in the anti-nodal direction is shifted by the SC gap. The model predicts a dip-hump structure in the spectral function,…
The presence of shell structure and the accompanying high level degeneracy leads to a strengthening of the pairing interaction in some metallic nanoclusters and ions. It is predicted that for some specific systems one can expect a large increase in the values of the critical temperature and other parameters.
The superconductor-insulator (SI) transition in two-dimensional Ta thin films is investigated by controlling both film thickness and magnetic field. An intriguing metallic phase intervening superconductor and an insulator phase is observed within a narrow range of film thickness and magnetic field. Finite scaling analysis has been performed to investigate the nature of the SI transition in the thickness-tuned metallic and superconducting samples. The critical exponents in the disorder-induced metallic samples are clearly different from the exponents obtained in the superconducting samples. Dyn…

The discovery of Fe-based superconductors (FBS) as the second class of high-temperature superconducting transition (high-Tc) materials after the cuprates generated a significant impact on the community of fundamental and applied superconductivity research. Whenever a new class of high-Tc superconducting materials is discovered, a lot of effort is devoted to growing single crystals and epitaxial thin films for exploring basic physical quantities. Although several properties of FBS are similar to the cuprates (large upper critical fields, resulting from a short coherence lengths, and small carri…

Motivated by recent experiments on small radius nanotubes, we study the superconducting instabilities of cylindrical (5,0) nanotubes. According to band structure calculations, thesenanotubes possess three bands at the Fermi energy. Using a fermionic renormalization group approach and a careful bosonization treatment,we consider the effect of different attractive interactions, mediated by phonons, within the Luttinger Liquid framework. We particularly focus on a superconducting instability specific to the three bands model we consider for the description of these (5,0) cylindrical nanotubes.
In amorphous superconductors, superconducting and vortex pinning properties are strongly linked to the absence of long range order. Consequently, superconductivity and vortex phases can be studied to probe the underlying microstructure and order of the material. This is done here from resistance and local magnetization measurements in the superconducting state of Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$Zr$_{2}$ metallic glasses with $0\leq x \leq 0.6$. Firstly, we present typical superconducting properties such as the critical temperature and fields and their dependence on Fe content in these alloys. Then, the obse…
Superconducting layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) stand out among other superconductors due to the tunable nature of the superconducting transition, coexistence with other collective electronic excitations (charge density waves) and strong intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is the most studied representative of this family of materials, especially since the recent demonstration of the possibility to tune its critical temperature, Tc, by electric-field doping. However, just one of its polymorphs, band-insulator 2H-MoS2, has so far been explored for its pot…
To describe the crossover from the bulk BCS superconductivity to a fluctuation-dominated regime in ultrasmall metallic grains, new order parameters and correlation functions, such as ``parity gap'' and ``pair-mixing correlation function'', have been recently introduced. In this paper, we discuss the small-grain behaviour of the Penrose-Onsager-Yang off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) parameter in a pseudo-spin representation. Relations between the ODLRO parameter and those mentioned above are established through analytical and numerical calculations.
The highly two-dimensional superconducting system Sr2(Mg$_y$Ti$_{1-y}$)O3FeAs, recently synthesized in the range of 0.2 < y < 0.5, shows an Mg concentration-dependent $T_c$. Reducing the Mg concentration from y=0.5 leads to a sudden increase in $T_c$, with a maximum $T_c$ ~40 K at y=0.2. Using first principles calculations, the unsynthesized stoichiometric y=0 and the substoichiometric y=0.5 compounds have been investigated. For the 50% Mg-doped phase (y=0.5), Sr2(Mg$_y$Ti$_{1-y}$)O3 layers are completely insulating spacers between FeAs layers, leading to the fermiology such as that found for …
We theoretically study a finite size $SF_1NF_2$ spin valve, where a normal metal ($N$) insert separates a thin standard ferromagnet ($F_1$) and a thick half-metallic ferromagnet ($F_2$). For sufficiently thin superconductor ($S$) widths close to the coherence length $ξ_0$, we find that changes to the relative magnetization orientations in the ferromagnets can result in substantial variations in the transition temperature $T_c$, consistent with experiment [Singh et al., Phys. Rev. X 5, 021019 (2015)]. Our results demonstrate that, in good agreement with the experiment, the variations are larges…

The thermodynamic parameters of the superconducting state, that gets induced in the metallic molecular hydrogen under the influence of the pressure at 414 GPa ($T_{C}=84$ K), have been determined. The calculations have been conducted in the framework of the three-band Eliashberg equations. The order parameters ($Δ^α$) and the wave function renormalization factors ($Z^α$) have been derived; the symbol $α$ denotes the band index: $α\in{a,b,c}$. It has been stated that the dimensionless ratios $2Δ^α(0)/k_{B}T_{C}$ are equal to: 5.55, 3.96 and 3.53, respectively. Next, the total normalized functio…
Magnetic field applied to the quantum dot coupled between one metallic and one superconducting electrode can produce a similar effect as has been experimentally observed by Meservey, Tedrow and Fulde [Phys. Rev. Lett. 25, 1270 (1970)] for the planar normal metal -- superconductor junctions. We investigate the tunneling current and show that indeed the square root singularities of differential conductance exhibit the Zeeman splitting near the gap edge features V = +/- Delta/e. Since magnetic field affects also the in-gap states of quantum dot it furthermore imposes a hyperfine structure on the …
Despite metals are believed to be insensitive to field-effect and conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theories predict the electric field to be ineffective on conventional superconductors, a number of gating experiments showed the possibility of modulating the conductivity of metallic thin films and the critical temperature of conventional superconductors. All these experimental features have been explained by simple charge accumulation/depletion. In 2018, electric field control of supercurrent in conventional metallic superconductors has been demonstrated in a range of electric field…
Dissipationless quantum states, such as superconductivity and superfluidity, have attracted interest for almost a century. A variety of systems exhibit these macroscopic quantum phenomena, ranging from superconducting electrons in metals to superfluid liquids, atomic vapours, and even large nuclei. It was recently suggested that liquid metallic hydrogen could form two new unusual dissipationless quantum states, namely the metallic superfluid and the superconducting superfluid. Liquid metallic hydrogen is projected to occur only at an extremely high pressure of about 400 GPa, while pressures on…
The composite material, consisting of metallic particles Ag5Pb2O6 diluted in insulating CuO matrix, has been investigated in a narrow concentration range separating ballistic tunnel transport from hopping conductivity. The formation of intergrain conducting bridges between metallic particles has been avoided by a careful metallurgic treatment. Resistivity is indicated by temperature dependence lnR~(T0/T)^1/2, and this dependence appeals an attention for possible one dimensional conductivity which could be looked upon as a property uniquely associated with an onset of the superconductivity exte…
The superconductor-insulator transition in two dimensions has been widely investigated as a paradigmatic quantum phase transition. The topic remains controversial, however, because many experiments exhibit a metallic regime with saturating low-temperature resistance, at odds with conventional theory. Here, we explore this transition in a novel, highly controllable system, a semiconductor heterostructure with epitaxial Al, patterned to form a regular array of superconducting islands connected by a gateable quantum well. Spanning nine orders of magnitude in resistance, the system exhibits regime…
We present here ^{13}C and ^{133}Cs NMR spin lattice relaxation T_{1} data in the A15 and fcc-Cs_{3}C_{60} phases for increasing hydrostatic pressure through the transition at p_{c} from a Mott insulator to a superconductor. We evidence that for p>> p_{c} the (T_{1}T)^{-1} data above T_{c} display metallic like Korringa constant values which match quantitatively previous data taken on other A_{3}C_{60} compounds. However below the pressure for which T_{c} goes through a maximum, (T_{1}T)^{-1} is markedly increased with respect to the Korringa values expected in a simple BCS scenario. This poin…
We present a new technique for measuring the critical temperature Tc in the high pressure, high Tc electron-phonon-driven superconducting hydrides. This technique does not require connecting leads to the sample. In the multiphonon region of the absorption spectrum, the reflectance mirrors the temperature variation of the superconducting order parameter. For an appropriately chosen value of photon energy of order twice the gap plus 1.5 times the maximum phonon energy, the temperature dependence of the reflectance varies much more rapidly below T=Tc than above. It increases with increasing tempe…
A superconducting phase with an extremely low carrier density of the order of 10^13 cm^-2 is present at LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces. If depleted from charge carriers by means of a gate field, this superconducting phase undergoes a transition into a metallic/insulating state that is still characterized by a gap in the spectral density of states. Measuring and analyzing the critical field of this gap, we provide evidence that macroscopically phase-coherent Cooper pairs are present in the metallic/insulating state. This is characterized by fluctuating vortex-antivortex pairs, and not by individual, …
We report the observation of a quantum phase transition (QPT), tuned by a parallel magnetic field, between a superconducting and metallic state in Au0.7In0.3 films of very low normal-state sheet resistance (< 90 Ohms). These films can be modeled as a random array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. Electrical transport and tunneling measurements suggest that, in the metallic state, the film consists of superconducting In-rich grains not linked by Josephson coupling. Whether phase fluctuation, which is not expected to be strong in such an SNS junction system according…
The "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting order in the cuprate high temperature superconductors is a well established fact, and one which identifies them as "unconventional." However, in macroscopic contexts -- including many potential applications ({\it i.e.} superconducting "wires") -- the material is a composite of randomly oriented superconducting grains in a metallic matrix, in which Josephson coupling between grains mediates the onset of long-range phase coherence. Here, we analyze the physics at length scales large compared to the size of such grains, and in particular the macroscopi…
All non-interacting two-dimensional electronic systems are expected to exhibit an insulating ground state. This conspicuous absence of the metallic phase has been challenged only in the case of low-disorder, low density, semiconducting systems where strong interactions dominate the electronic state. Unexpectedly, over the last two decades, there have been multiple reports on the observation of a state with metallic characteristics on a variety of thin-film superconductors. To date, no theoretical explanation has been able to fully capture the existence of such a state for the large variety of …
We have studied the magnetic field or disorder induced insulating and metallic phases in amorphous Ta superconducting thin films. The evolution of the nonlinear transport in the insulating phase exhibits a non-monotonic behavior as the magnetic field is increased. We suggest that this observation could be an evidence of the presence of localized Cooper pairs in the insulating phase. As the metallic phase intervenes the superconducting and insulating states in Ta films, this result further reveals that Cooper pairs also exist in the metallic ground state.
Non-monotonic differential resistance (dV/dI) is observed in magnetically induced insulating films which exhibit apparent superconductor-metal-insulator transitions in the low temperature limit; at low bias currents the nonlinear transport is insulator-like while at high bias currents it is characteristic of metallic phase. The non-monotonic dV/dI may be evidence that the insulating state consists of metallic domains connected by point contacts (insulating gaps), implying that spatial inhomogeneities play a dominant role in determining the nature of the apparent metal-insulator transition.
In paper III of this series (arXiv:0901.3612) we proposed a scenario of superconductivity driven by hole "undressing" that involved a complete redistribution of the occupation of single particle energy levels: the holes near the top of the band were proposed to all condense to the bottom of the band. Here we consider a less drastic redistribution involving electrons with a definite spin chirality and show that it is in fact energetically favored by the Coulomb exchange matrix element $J$ over the scenario proposed earlier. It is shown that spin splitting with chiral states reduces the Coulomb …
We report on several low temperature experiments supporting the presence of Majorana fermions in superconducting lead nanowires fabricated with a scanning tunneling microscope. These nanowires are the connecting bridges between the STM tip and the sample resulting from indentation processes. We show here that by a controlled tuning of the geometry of the nanowire region, in which superconductivity is confined by applied magnetic fields, the conductance curves obtained in these situations are indicative of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions. The most prominent feature of this b…
