We present here ^{13}C and ^{133}Cs NMR spin lattice relaxation T_{1} data in the A15 and fcc-Cs_{3}C_{60} phases for increasing hydrostatic pressure through the transition at p_{c} from a Mott insulator to a superconductor. We evidence that for p>> p_{c} the (T_{1}T)^{-1} data above T_{c} display metallic like Korringa constant values which match quantitatively previous data taken on other A_{3}C_{60} compounds. However below the pressure for which T_{c} goes through a maximum, (T_{1}T)^{-1} is markedly increased with respect to the Korringa values expected in a simple BCS scenario. This points out the importance of electronic correlations near the Mott transition. For p > p_{c} singular T dependences of (T_{1}T)^{-1} are detected for T >> T_{c}. It will be shown that they can be ascribed to a large variation with temperature of the Mott transition pressure p_{c} towards a liquid-gas like critical point, as found at high T for usual Mott transitions.
The paradigmatic Mott insulator arises in strongly correlated systems, where strong local repulsion localizes interacting particles in underlying egg-holder-like potential. The corresponding Mott transition reflects delocalization of the charges either by varying parameters of the system and temperature, or by applied current, the latter being referred to as the dynamic Mott transition. Recently, the dynamic Mott transition was experimentally observed on the vortex system trapped by the periodic proximity array and described in terms of non-Hermitian theory of nonequilibrium processes. Here we…
We study the differential resistivity transition of two-dimensional superconducting arrays induced by an external driving current, in the presence of thermal fluctuations and a magnetic field corresponding to $f$ flux quantum per plaquette. Recent experiments have identified this transition as a dynamic vortex Mott insulator transition at vortex densities near rational values of $f$. The critical behavior is determined from a scaling analysis of the current-voltage relation near the transition, obtained by Monte Carlo simulations of a Josephson-junction array model in the vortex representation…
A d-wave superconducting ground state for a doped Mott insulator is obtained. It is distinguished from a Gutzwiller-projected BCS superconductor by an explicit separation of Cooper pairing and resonating valence bond (RVB) pairing. Such a state satisfies the precise sign structure of the t-J model, just like that a BCS state satisfies the Fermi-Dirac statistics. This new class of wavefunctions can be intrinsically characterized and effectively manipulated by electron fractionalization with neutral spinons and backflow spinons forming a two-component RVB structure. While the former spinon is bo…
We show that under an a.c. magnetic field excitation the vortex lattice in a superconductor with periodic array of holes can undergo a transition from a Mott-like state where each vortex is localized in a hole, to a metal-like state where the vortices get delocalized. The vortex dynamics is studied through the magnetic shielding response which is measured using a low frequency two-coil mutual inductance technique on a disordered superconducting NbN film having periodic array of holes. We observe that the shielding response of the vortex state is strongly dependent on the amplitude of the a.c. …
We study the dynamic vortex Mott transition in two-dimensional superconducting arrays in a magnetic field with $f$ flux quantum per plaquette. The transition is induced by external driving current and thermal fluctuations near rational vortex densities set by the value of $f$, and has been observed experimentally from the scaling behavior of the differential resistivity. Recently, numerical simulations of interacting vortex models have demonstrated this behavior only near fractional $f$. A fine-grid vortex model is introduced, which allows to consider both the cases of fractional and integer $…
Fluctuation spectroscopy is used to investigate the organic bandwidth-controlled Mott system $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl. We find evidence for percolative-type superconductivity in the spatially inhomogeneous coexistence region of antiferromagnetic insulating and superconducting states which develops under pressure at low temperatures. When the superconducting transition is driven by a magnetic field, percolation seems to be dominated by unstable superconducting clusters upon approaching $T_c (B)$ from above, before a "classical" type of percolation is resumed at low fields, dominated by…
We report transient optical signatures of the orbital-selective Mottness in superconducting KxFe2-ySe2 crystals by using dual-color pump-probe spectroscopy. Besides multi-exponential decay recovery dynamics of photo-induced quasiparticles, a damped oscillatory component due to coherent acoustic phonons emerges when the superconducting phase is suppressed by increasing the temperature or excitation power. The oscillatory component diminishes with significant enhancement of a slow decay component upon raising temperature to 150-160 K. These results are in consistence with the picture of orbital-…
We point out that fractionalized bosonic charge excitations can explain the recently discovered photo-induced superconducting-like response in $κ\text{-(ET})_2\text{Cu}[\text{N(CN)}_2]\text{Br}$, an organic metal close to the Mott transition. The pump laser exerts a periodic drive on the fractionalized field, creating a non-equilibrium condensate, which gives a Drude peak much narrower than the equilibrium scattering rate, hence superconducting-like response. Our proposal illuminates new possibilities of detecting fractionalization and can be readily tested in spin liquid candidates and in col…
The dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is employed to study the Mott transition in the semi-infinite Hubbard model at half-filling and zero temperature. We consider the low-index surfaces of the three-dimensional simple-cubic lattice and systematically vary the model parameters at the very surface. Within the DMFT the problem is self-consistently mapped onto a set of coupled effective impurity models corresponding to the inequivalent layers parallel to the surface. Assuming that the influence of the Hubbard bands on the low-energy quasi-particle resonance can be neglected at the critical point…
We report neutron scattering data and DFT calculations of the stoichiometric iron-arsenide superconductor Sr2VO3FeAs. Rietveld refinements of neutron powder patterns confirm the ideal composition without oxygen deficiencies. Experiments with polarized neutrons prove weak magnetic ordering in the V-sublattice of Sr2VO3FeAs at ~ 45 K with a probable propagation vector q = (1/8,1/8,0). The ordered moment of ~ 0.1 muB is too small to remove the V-3d bands from the Fermi level by magnetic exchange splitting, and much smaller than predicted from a recent LDA+U study. By using DFT calculations with a…
Because the cuprate superconductors are doped Mott insulators, it would be advantageous to solve even a toy model that exhibits both Mottness and superconductivity. We consider the Hatsugai-Kohmoto model, an exactly solvable system that is a prototypical Mott insulator above a critical interaction strength at half filling. Upon doping or reducing the interaction strength, our exact calculations show that the system becomes a non-Fermi liquid metal with a superconducting instability. In the presence of a weak pairing interaction, the instability produces a thermal transition to a superconductin…
High-temperature superconductors at zero doping can be considered strongly correlated two-dimensional Mott insulators. The understanding of the connection between the superconductor and the Mott insulator hits at the heart of the high-temperature superconducting mechanism. In this paper we investigate the zero-temperature doping-driven evolution of a superconductor towards the Mott insulator in a two dimensional electron model, relevant for high temperature superconductivity. To this purpose we use a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. Our results show that a standard (BCS) d-wav…
A weird electronic state accompanied with an anomalous superconducting precursor and/or exotic orders, called the pseudogap state, arises prior to a superconducting condensate in underdoped cuprates that are situated near Mott transition. Another way to make the system approach the Mott transition is the variation of bandwidth or correlation strength, which gives a new dimension to exploring this exotic state. Here we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on layered organic superconductors with half-filled bands whose widths are pressure-tuned near the Mott transition. The system sit…
We study a three-orbital Hubbard model with negative Hund coupling in infinite dimensions, combining dynamical mean-field theory with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This model, which is relevant for the description of alkali-doped fullerides, has previously been shown to exhibit a spontaneous orbital selective Mott phase in the vicinity of the superconducting phase. Calculating the pair potential and double occupancy in each orbital, we study the competition between different homogeneous ordered states and determine the corresponding finite temperature phase diagram of the mo…
Based on a microscopic theoretical study, we show that novel superconductivity is induced by carrier doping in layered perovskite Ir oxides where a strong spin-orbit coupling causes an effective total angular momentum J_{eff}=1/2 Mott insulator. Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we find an unconventional superconducting state in the ground state phase diagram of a t_{2g} three-orbital Hubbard model on the square lattice. This superconducting state is characterized by a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave "pseudospin singlet" formed by the J_{eff}=1/2 Kramers doublet, which thus contains inter-orbital as we…
A microscopic theory is presented for the local moment formation near a non-magnetic impurity or a copper defect in high-T_c superconductors. We use a renormalized meanfield theory of the t-J model for a doped Mott insulator and study the fully self-consistent, spatially unrestricted solutions of the d-wave superconducting (SC) state in both the spin S=0 and S=1/2 sectors. We find a transition from the singlet d-wave SC state to a spin doublet SC state when the renormalized exchange coupling exceeds a doping dependent critical value. The induced S=1/2 moment is staggered and localized around t…
We have studied the electronic transport properties of homogeneously disordered superconducting tantalum thin films in magnetic fields. The films exhibit three distinct transport regimes in the zero temperature limit which we identify as superconducting, metallic, and insulating phases. The metallic phase is unexpected. The transport characteristics of this metallic phase are found to be similar to those of MoGe films and high mobility dilute two-dimensional electrons or holes confined in semiconductor interface or transistor geometry.
The emergence of superconductivity in doped Mott insulators has been debated for decades. In this paper, we report the theoretical discovery of a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting ground state in the doped Mott insulator (described by the well known t-J model) on honeycomb lattice, based on a recently developed variational method: the Grassmann tensor product state approach. As a benchmark, we use exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization methods to check our results on small clusters. We find systematic consistency for the ground-state energy as well as other phys…
We predict that simple metals and early transition metals that become superconducting under high pressures will show a change in sign of their Hall coefficient from negative to positive under pressure. If verified, this will strongly suggest that hole carriers play a fundamental role in `conventional' superconductivity, as predicted by the theory of hole superconductivity.
Transition metal oxides display a great variety of quantum electronic behaviours where correlations often play an important role. The achievement of high quality epitaxial interfaces involving such materials gives a unique opportunity to engineer artificial structures where new electronic orders take place. One of the most striking result in this area is the recent observation of a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between a strongly correlated Mott insulator LaTiO3 and a band insulator SrTiO3. The mechanism responsible for such a behaviour is still under debate. In particular, the…
To examine the thermodynamic properties of Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$ compounds with metallic CuO double chains, we measured the specific heats of superconducting and non-superconducting polycrystalline samples at low temperatures (1.8-40 K) under various magnetic fields (up to 9 T). In the as-sintered non-superconducting sample, a $λ-$like enhancement in the specific heat measurement appeared near the antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{N}=17$ K. In contrast, the reduced superconducting sample with $T_{c,on}=26.5$ K exhibited no obvious superconducting anomaly in its specific…
We investigate the possibility of finding a zero-temperature metallic phase in granular superconducting films. We are able to identify the breakdown of the conventional treatment of these systems as dissipative Bose systems. We do not find a metallic state at zero temperature. At finite temperatures, we find that the system exhibit crossover behaviour which may have implications for the analysis of experimental results. We also investigate the effect of vortex dissipation in these systems.
Recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements discovered remarkable electronic inhomogeneity, i.e. nano-scale spatial variations of the local density of states (LDOS) and the superconducting energy gap, in the high-Tc superconductor BSCCO. Based on the experimental findings we conjectured that the inhomogeneity arises from variations in local oxygen doping level and may be generic of doped Mott insulators which behave rather unconventionally in screening the dopant ionic potentials at atomic scales comparable to the short coherence length. Here, we provide theoretical support for thi…
We investigate the potential existence of a superconducting phase in $5d$ Mott insulators with an eye to hole doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Using a mean-field method, a mixed singlet-triplet superconductivity, $d + p$, is observed due to the antisymmetric exchange originating from a quasi-spin-orbit-coupling. Our calculation on ribbon geometry shows possible existence of the topologically protected edge states, because of nodal structure of the superconducting gap. These edge modes are spin polarized and emerge as zero-energy flat bands, supporting a symmetry protected Majorana states, verified by eval…
Layered organic superconductors of the BEDT family are model systems for the interplay of the Mott transition with superconductivity, magnetic order and frustration. Recent experimental studies on a hole-doped version of BEDT compounds reveal an enhancement of superconductivity and a rapid crossover between two different conducting phases above the superconducting dome. One of these phases is a Fermi liquid, the other not. Using plaquette cellular dynamical mean field theory with state of the art continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we study this problem with the two-dimensional H…
The Bose Hubbard model (BHM) of interacting bosons in a lattice has been a paradigm in many-body physics, and it exhibits a Mott insulator (MI)-superfluid (SF) transition at integer filling. Here a quantum simulator of the BHM using a superconducting circuit is proposed. Specifically, a superconducting transmission line resonator supporting microwave photons is coupled to a charge qubit to form one site of the BHM, and adjacent sites are connected by a tunable coupler. To obtain a mapping from the superconducting circuit to the BHM, we focus on the dispersive regime where the excitations remai…
We propose a new class of ground states for doped Mott insulators in the electron second-quantization representation. They are obtained from a bosonic resonating valence bond (RVB) theory of the t-J model. At half filling, the ground state describes spin correlations of the S=1/2 Heisenberg model very accurately. Its spin degrees of freedom are characterized by RVB pairing of spins, the size of which decreases continuously as holes are doped into the system. Charge degrees of freedom emerge upon doping and are described by twisted holes in the RVB background. We show that the twisted holes exh…
Former extensive studies of superconductivity in the \textit{A}$_{3}$C$_{60}$ compounds, where \textit{A} is an alkali, have led to consider that Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer (BCS) electron-phonon pairing prevails in those compounds, though the incidence of electronic Coulomb repulsion has been highly debated. The discovery of two isomeric fulleride compounds Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$ which exhibit a transition with pressure from a Mott insulator (MI) to a superconducting (SC) state clearly re-opens that question. Using pressure ($p$) as a single control parameter of the C$_{60}$ balls lattice spacing, on…
A key open issue in condensed matter physics is how quantum and classical correlations emerge in an unconventional superconductor from the underlying normal state. We study this problem in a doped Mott insulator with information theory tools on the two-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperature with cluster dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the local entropy detects the superconducting state and that the difference in the local entropy between the superconducting and normal states follows the same difference in the potential energy. We find that the thermodynamic entropy is suppre…
The nearest-neighbor superexchange-mediated mechanism for d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity in the one-band Hubbard model faces the challenge that nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion can be larger than superexchange. To answer this question, we use cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo solver to determine the superconducting phase diagram as a function of temperature and doping for on-site repulsion $U=9t$ and nearest-neighbor repulsion $V=0,2t,4t$. In the underdoped regime, $V$ increases the CDMFT superconducting transition temperature $T_c^d$…
The electronic phase diagram of the weak spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr(1-x)Lax)3Ir2O7 is determined via an exhaustive experimental study. Upon doping electrons via La substitution, an immediate collapse in resistivity occurs along with a narrow regime of nanoscale phase separation comprised of antiferromagnetic, insulating regions and paramagnetic, metallic puddles persisting until x~0.04. Continued electron doping results in an abrupt, first-order phase boundary where the Neel state is suppressed and a homogenous, correlated, metallic state appears with an enhanced spin susceptibility and loc…
The kinetic features of holes (electrons) in the Hubbard model are studied using a variational Monte Carlo method. In doped Mott insulators (U>U_co), holes are classified, in the sense of conduction, into two categories: (i) The holes appearing in doublon-holon pairs are localized, encourage singlet pair formation, and gain the energy to induce a superconducting transition. (ii) The doped holes become carriers, make the system itinerant (superconducting or metallic), but lose the energy in the transition. These two roles are distinguished in correlated superconductivity. This feature is common…
Recent quasi-2D systems with judicious exploitation of the atomic monolayer or few-layer architecture exhibit unprecedented physical properties that challenge the conventional wisdom on the condensed matter physics. Here we show that the infinite layer SrCuO2 (SCO), a topical cuprate Mott insulator in the bulk form, can manifest an unexpected metallic state in the quasi-2D limit when SCO is grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectra demonstrate a definitive Fermi level that resembles the hole doped metal. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy als…
An intricate interplay between superconductivity, pseudogap and Mott transition, either bandwidth driven or doping driven, occurs in materials. Layered organic conductors and cuprates offer two prime examples. We provide a unified perspective of this interplay in the two-dimensional Hubbard model within cellular dynamical mean-field theory on a $2\times 2$ plaquette and using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method as impurity solver. Both at half filling and at finite doping, the metallic normal state close to the Mott insulator is unstable to d-wave superconductivity. Superconductivit…
The Mott insulating state formed from bosons is ubiquitous in solid He-4, cold atom systems, Josephson junction networks and perhaps underdoped high-Tc superconductors. We predict that close to the quantum phase transition to the superconducting state the Mott insulator is not at all as featureless as is commonly believed. In three dimensions there is a phase transition to a low temperature state where, under influence of an external current, a superconducting state consisting of a regular array of 'wires' that each carry a quantized flux of supercurrent is realized. This prediction of the "ty…
We study the resonating valence bond (RVB) theory of the Hubbard-Heisenberg model on the half-filled anisotropic triangular lattice. Varying the frustration changes the wavevector of maximum spin correlation in the Mott insulating phase. This, in turn, changes the symmetry of the superconducting state, that occurs at the boundary of the Mott insulating phase. We propose that this physics is realised in several families of quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors.
In this article I give a pedagogical illustration of why the essential problem of high-Tc superconductivity in the cuprates is about how an antiferromagnetically ordered state can be turned into a short-range state by doping. I will start with half-filling where the antiferromagnetic ground state is accurately described by the Liang-Doucot-Anderson (LDA) wavefunction. Here the effect of the Fermi statistics becomes completely irrelevant due to the no double occupancy constraint. Upon doping, the statistical signs reemerge, albeit much reduced as compared to the original Fermi statistical signs…
Starting from the d-wave RVB mean-field theory of Kotliar and Liu, we present a new, long-wavelength/low-energy exact, treatment of gauge fluctuations. The result is a theory of gapless fermion quasiparticles coupled to superconducting phase fluctuations. We will discuss the physical implications, and the similarity/differences with a theory of BCS pairing with phase fluctuations.
Sr2IrO4 is an archetypal spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator with an antiferromagnetic state below 240 K. Here we report results of our study on single crystals of Sr2Ir1-xFexO4 (0<x<0.32) and Sr2Ir1-xCoxO4 (0<x<0.22). Fe doping retains the antiferromagnetic state but simultaneously precipitates an emergent metallic state whereas Co doping causes a rapid collapse of both the antiferromagnetic and Mott states, giving rise to a confined metallic state featuring a pronounced linearity of the basal-plane resistivity up to 700 K. The results indicate tetravalent Fe4+(3d4) ions in the intermediate spi…
The origin of strange metallic phase is shown to exist due to these two conditions---(i) the electrons are strongly interacting such that there are no band and Mott-Hubbard gaps, and (ii) the electronic energy levels are crossed in such a way that there is an electronic energy gap between two energy levels associated to two different wave functions. The theory is also exploited to explain (i) the upward- and downward-shifts in the $T$-linear resistivity curves, and (ii) the spectral weight transfer observed in the soft X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurements of the La-Sr-Cu-O Mott insulato…
A variational approach is used to study the superconductor-insulator transition in two-band granular superconducting films using a resistance-shunted Josephson junction array model in this letter. We show that a zero-temperature metallic phase may exist between the superconducting and insulator phases which is absent in normal single band granular superconducting films. The metallic phase may be observable in some dirty pnictide superconductor films.
The renormalization factor, dubbed ``quasiparticle charge'' Z_e, of the coupling between the supercurrent and quasiparticles was analyzed in the context of high temperature cuprates in a recent paper by Ioffe and Millis. They observed that Z_e in cuprates deviates from the BCS value (Z_e=1), which was interpreted as the proximity effect near a Mott insulator. Here we show that the deviation from Z_e=1 can occur, in general, even in the absence of quasiparticle interactions, when the superconducting order coexists with another order parameter with the same internal symmetry. As an example, we c…
We study superconductivity on the honeycomb lattice close to the Mott state at half-filling. Due to the sixfold lattice symmetry and disjoint Fermi surfaces at opposite momenta, we show that several different fully gapped superconducting states naturally exist on the honeycomb lattice, of which the chiral $d+id'$-wave state has previously been shown to appear when superconductivity appears close to the Mott state. Using renormalized mean-field theory to study the t-J model and quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the Hubbard-U model we show that the $d+id'$-wave state is the favored superconduc…
The Fermi arc is a striking manifestation of the strong-correlation physics in high-T_c cuprates. In this paper, implications of the metallic transport in the lightly hole-doped regime of the cuprates, where the Fermi arcs are found, are examined in conjunction with competing interpretations of the Fermi arcs in terms of small hole pockets or a large underlying Fermi surface. It is discussed that the latter picture provides a more natural understanding of the metallic transport in view of the Mott-limit argument. Furthermore, it is shown that a suitable modeling of the Fermi arcs in the framew…
We present a $T=0K$ renormalization group (RG) phase diagram for the electronic Hubbard model in two dimensions on the square lattice at, and away from, half filling. The RG procedure treats quantum fluctuations in the single particle occupation number nonperturbatively via the unitarily decoupling of one electronic state at every RG step. The resulting phase diagram thus possess the quantum fluctuation energy scale ($ω$) as one of its axes. A relation is derived between $ω$ and the effective temperature scale upto which gapless, as well as emergent gapped, phases can be obtained. We find that…
We propose the parent compound of the newly discovered superconducting nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ as a self-doped Mott insulator, in which the low-density Nd-$5d$ conduction electrons couple to localized Ni-3$% d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ electrons to form Kondo spin singlets at low temperatures. This proposal is motivated with our analyses of the reported resistivity and Hall coefficient data in the normal state, showing logarithmic temperature dependence at low temperatures. In the strong Kondo coupling limit, we derive a generalized $t$-$J$ model with both Kondo singlets and nickel holons m…
We have investigated the Mott transition in a quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator EtMe$_3$P[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ with a spin-frustrated triangular lattice in hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field. In the pressure-temperature ($P$-$T$) phase diagram, a valence bond solid phase is found to neighbor the superconductor and metal phases at low temperatures. The profile of the phase diagram is common to those of Mott insulators with antiferromagnetic order. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the resistivity in the metallic phase exhibits anomalous temperature dependence, $ρ= ρ_0 +…
The presence of shell structure and the accompanying high level degeneracy leads to a strengthening of the pairing interaction in some metallic nanoclusters and ions. It is predicted that for some specific systems one can expect a large increase in the values of the critical temperature and other parameters.
Motivated by the recent discovery of a low temperature spin liquid phase in layered organic compound $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ which becomes a superconductor under pressure, we examine the phase transition of Mott insulating and superconducting (SC) states in a Hubbard-Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. We use a renormalized mean field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected BCS wavefucntions. The half filled electron system is a Mott insulator at large on-site repulsion $U$, and is a superconductor at a moderate $U$. The symmetry of the SC state depends on the anisotropy…
We analyze the recent vortex core spectroscopy experiments in cuprate superconductor and discuss what can be learned from them about the nature of the ground state in these compounds. We argue that the data are inconsistent with the assumption of a simple metallic ground state and exhibit characteristics of a doped Mott insulator. A theory for a vortex core in such a doped Mott insulator is developed based on the U(1) gauge field slave boson model and is shown to exhibit properties qualitatively consistent with the experimental data.
The phase diagram of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl has been accurately measured from a combination of $^{1}$H NMR and AC susceptibility techniques under helium gas pressure. The domains of stability of antiferromagnetic and superconducting long-range orders in the pressure {\it vs} temperature plane have been determined. Both phases overlap through a first-order boundary that separates two regions of inhomogeneous phase coexistence. The boundary curve is found to merge with another first order line related to the metal-insulator transition in the paramagnet…
Pressure-temperature phase diagram of the organic Mott insulator $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, a model system of the spin liquid on triangular lattice, has been investigated by $^1$H NMR and resistivity measurements. The spin-liquid phase is persistent before the Mott transition to the metal or superconducting phase under pressure. At the Mott transition, the spin fluctuations are rapidly suppressed and the Fermi-liquid features are observed in the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate and resistivity. The characteristic curvature of Mott boundary in the phase diagram highli…
The evolution from an anomalous metallic phase to a Mott insulator within the two-dimensional Hubbard model is investigated by means of the Cellular Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We show that the density-driven Mott metal-insulator transition is approached in a non-uniform way in different regions of the momentum space. This gives rise to a breakup of the Fermi surface and to the formation of hot and cold regions, whose position depends on the hole or electron like nature of the carriers in the system.
One path to high-temperature cuprate superconductors is doping a Mott insulator. In this paper, we study this system from the view point of higher-form symmetries. On the introduction of slave bosons, the $t-J$ model at a finite hole doping can be written in the form of $U(1)$ gauge theories. After a duality transformation, they can be written as a generalized $BF$ theory, in which the higher-form symmetries are more manifest. We identify the emergent continuous and discrete higher-form symmetries in both $s-wave$ and $d-wave$ superconducting phases, expected to be realized from a doped Mott i…
Strongly correlated materials often undergo a Mott metal-insulator transition, which is tipically first-order, as a function of control parameters like pressure. Upon doping, rich phase diagrams with competing instabilities are found. Yet, the conceptual link between the interaction-driven Mott transition and the finite-doping behavior lacks a clear connection with the theory of critical phenomena. In a prototypical case of a first-order Mott transition the surface associated with the equation of state for the homogeneous system is "folded" so that in a range of parameters stable metallic and …
A superconducting phase with an extremely low carrier density of the order of 10^13 cm^-2 is present at LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces. If depleted from charge carriers by means of a gate field, this superconducting phase undergoes a transition into a metallic/insulating state that is still characterized by a gap in the spectral density of states. Measuring and analyzing the critical field of this gap, we provide evidence that macroscopically phase-coherent Cooper pairs are present in the metallic/insulating state. This is characterized by fluctuating vortex-antivortex pairs, and not by individual, …
