Measurements of the temperature-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility of superconducting films reveal reversible responses, i.e., irrespective of the magnetic and thermal history of the sample. This experimental fact is observed even in the presence of stochastic and certainly irreversible magnetic flux avalanches which, in principle, should randomly affect the results. In this work, we explain such an apparent contradiction by exploring the spatial resolution of magneto-optical imaging. To achieve this, we successfully compare standard frequency-independent first harmonic ac magnetic susceptibility results for a superconducting thin film with those obtained by ac-emulating magneto-optical imaging (acMOI). A quantitative analysis also provides information regarding flux avalanches, reveals the presence of a vortex-antivortex annihilation zone in the region in which a smooth flux front interacts with pre-established avalanches, and demonstrates that the major impact on the flux distribution within the superconductor happens during the first ac cycle. Our results establish acMOI as a reliable approach for studying frequency-independent ac field effects in superconducting thin films while capturing local aspects of flux dynamics, otherwise inaccessible via global magnetometry techniques.
A simple two-band model is used to describe the magnitude and temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, Hall coefficient and Seebeck data from undoped and Co doped BaFe2As2. Overlapping, rigid parabolic electron and hole bands are considered as a model of the electronic structure of the FeAs-based semimetals. The model has only three parameters: the electron and hole effective masses and the position of the valence band maximum with respect to the conduction band minimum. The model is able to reproduce in a semiquantitative fashion the magnitude and temperature dependence of many …
The nature of the nematic state in FeSe remains one of the major unsolved mysteries in Fe- based superconductors. Both spin and orbital physics have been invoked to explain the origin of this phase. Here we present experimental evidence for frustrated, short-range magnetic order, as suggested by several recent theoretical works, in the nematic state of FeSe. We use a combination of magnetostriction, susceptibility and resistivity measurements to probe the in-plane anisotropies of the nematic state and its associated fluctuations. Despite the absence of long-range magnetic order in FeSe, we obs…
We report DC magnetization, detailed systematic linear and nonlinear AC magnetic susceptibility and transport for a single phase RuSr2Eu1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ (EuRu-1222) magneto-superconductor. The studied sample is synthesized through standard solid state reaction route, which is crystallized in single phase tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that the studied EuRu-1222 is a magneto-superconductor with Ru spins ordering at around 110 K and superconductivity in the Cu-O2 planes below \approx 30 K. Temperature dependence of AC susceptibility…
We report complex ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of a superconducting transition in very high-quality single-crystal alpha-uranium using microfabricated coplanar magnetometers. We identify an onset of superconductivity at T~0.7 K in both the real and imaginary components of the susceptibility which is confirmed by resistivity data. A superconducting volume fraction argument, based on a comparison with a calibration YBCO sample, indicates that the superconductivity in these samples may be filamentary. Our data also demonstrate the sensitivity of the coplanar micro-magnetometers, which …
Experiment and analytical calculations show that the demagnetizing field of a superconductor is a sensitive probe of quantities otherwise difficult to measure, such as the sample-probe distance in flux-density imaging experiments, and the field of first flux penetration Hp. In particular, the ratio of the maximum field measured above the superconductor edge and the applied field can be determined unambiguously so as to define a linear "geometric" susceptibility. The evolution of this susceptibility with field depends on the regime of flux penetration, and can be used as a means to determine Hp…
We report structural, DC magnetization, detailed linear/non-linear AC susceptibility, (with applied frequency and amplitude) isothermal and thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) behavior for RuSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (YRu-1222) magneto-superconductor to understand its complex magnetism. Studied sample is synthesized through the novel solid state High Pressure (6 GPa) High Temperature (1450oC) (HPHT) technique. The compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm (No. 139). DC magnetic susceptibility shows that studied YRu-1222 is magneto-superconducting with Ru spins magnetic o…
Magnetic susceptibility, M-H plot, magnetoresistance and thermoelectric power of the RuSr2Eu1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 superconductor are measured. Values of the magnetic transition temperature Tmag, superconductivity transition temperature Tc, upper critical field Hc2, chemical potential mu, and energy width for electric conduction W(sigma) are obtained from these measurements. It has been found that Tmag = 140 K, Tc = 25 K (33 K) from susceptibility (magnetoresistance) measurements, Hc2 (0) > 32 T, mu = 8 meV, and W(sigma) = 58.5 meV. These values are compared with other ruthenate superconductors, and r…
Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under magnetic field ρ(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat (Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x = 0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation energ…
Here we present the magnetic properties and upper critical field (BC2) of polycrystalline Y(Ba1-xSrx)2Cu3O7-δ superconductors, which are being determined through detailed ac/dc susceptibility and resistivity under magnetic field (RTH) study. All the samples are synthesized through solid state reaction route. Reduction in Meissner fraction (the ratio of field cooled to zero field cooled magnetization) is observed with increasing Sr content, suggesting occurrence of flux pining in the doped samples. The ac susceptibility and resistivity measurements reveal improved grain couplings in Sr substitu…
We report a detailed set of AC magnetic measurements carried out on bulk large grain La-Ca-Mn-O samples extracted from a floating zone method-grown rod. Three samples with $La_{0.78}Ca_{0.22}Mn_{0.90}O_{x}$ stoichiometry but differing in their microstructure were investigated by electrical resistivity and AC susceptibility measurements: (i) a single grain sample, (ii) a sample containing two grains and (iii) a polycrystalline sample. We show that the superimposition of DC magnetic fields during AC magnetic susceptibility measurements is an efficient way for characterizing the magnetic transiti…
Magneto-optical imaging and magnetization measurements were applied to investigate local formation of superconducting phase effected by a random neck synthesis in Y-Ba-Cu-O system. Polished pellets of strongly inhomogeneous ceramic samples show clearly the appearance of superconducting material in the intergrain zones of binary primary particles reacted under different conditions. Susceptibility measurements allows evaluation of superconducting critical temperature, which turned out to be close to that of optimally doped YBCO.
Single crystals of K0.80Fe1.76Se2.02 were suscessfully grown from a ternary solution. We show that although crystals form when cooling a near stoichiometric melt, crystals are actually growing out of a ternary solution that remains liquid to at least 850 C. We investigated their chemical composition, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility and resistivity, specific heat, thermoelectric power, London penetration depth and flux penetration via magneto-optical imaging. Whereas the samples appear to be homogeneously superconducting at low temperatures, there appears to be a broadened transtion range c…
A novel setup for the measurement of magnetic fields external to certain antiferromagnets and generally weakly remanent magnetic materials is presented. The setup features a highly sensitive Super Conducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometer with a magnetic field resolution of approx. 10 fT, non-electric thermalization of the sample space for a temperature range of 1.5 - 65 K with a non-electric sample movement drive and optical position encoding. To minimize magnetic susceptibility effects, the setup components are degaussed and realized with plastic materials in sample proximi…
In this article, we report magneto-heat capacity analysis of superconducting SnAs, which is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and magneto-transport measurements. The studied SnAs superconductor evidenced the presence of superconductivity at around 4K, and the same is seen to persist up to an applied field of 250Oe. The bulk nature of superconductivity is determined through AC susceptibility along with heat capacity measurements. Magneto-heat capacity measurements show SnAs to be a fully gapped s wave superconductor. This finding is well supp…
In addition to unconventional high-Tc superconductivity, the iron arsenides exhibit strong magnetoelastic coupling and a notable electronic anisotropy within the a-b plane. We relate these properties by studying underdoped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 by x-ray diffraction in pulsed magnetic fields up to 27.5 Tesla. We exploit magnetic detwinning effects to demonstrate anisotropy in the in-plane susceptibility, which develops at the structural phase transition despite the absence of magnetic order. The degree of detwinning increases smoothly with decreasing temperature, and a single- domain condition i…
We report magnetic measurements up to 1100 K on a multi-walled carbon nanotube mat sample using a Quantum Design vibrating sample magnetometer. In an ultra-low field (H = -0.02 Oe), we find a very large paramagnetic susceptibility (up to 12.7% of 1/4pi) at 1100 K and a very large diamagnetic susceptibility (at least 8.4% of -1/4pi) at 482 K. A small magnetic field (2.1 Oe) completely suppresses the diamagnetic susceptibility at 482 K and reduces the paramagnetic susceptibility at 1100 K by a factor of over 20. We rule out explanations based on magnetic contaminants, instrument artifacts, and o…
