Diamagnetic susceptibility measurements under high hydrostatic pressure (up to 1.03 GPa) were carried out on the newly discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs(x=0.11). The transition temperature T_c, defined as the point at the maximum slope of superconducting transition, was enhanced almost linearly by hydrostatic pressure, yielding a dT_c/dP of about 1.2 K/GPa. Differential diamagnetic susceptibility curves indicate that the underlying superconducting state is complicated. It is suggested that pressure plays an important role on pushing low T_c superconducting phase toward the main (optimal) superconducting phase.
We have investigated the Se isotope effect in layered bismuth chalcogenide (BiCh2-based) superconductor LaO0.6F0.4Bi(S,Se)2 with 76Se and 80Se. For all examined samples, the Se concentration, which is linked to the superconducting properties, is successfully controlled within x = 1.09-1.14 in LaO0.6F0.4BiS2-xSex. From the magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements, changes in Tc are not observed for the LaO0.6F0.4Bi(S,Se)2 samples with 76Se and 80Se isotopes. Our results suggest that pairing in the BiCh2-based superconductors is not mediated by phonons, and unconventional supercondu…
In this paper we calculate the electron-phonon coupling of the newly-discovered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs from first-principles, using Density Functional Perturbation Theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant $λ=0.21$ and logarithmic-averaged frequency $ω_{ln}=206 K$, give a maximum $T_c$ of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. For the $F-$doped compounds, we predict even smaller coupling constants, due to the strong suppression of the electronic Density of States at the Fermi level. To reproduce the experimental $T_c=26 K$, a 5-6 times…
The superconducting properties and structural parameters, including the Grüneisen parameter (γG), of the BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex were investigated. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) increased with increasing Se concentration (x), and bulk superconductivity was induced by Se substitution. γG exhibited a larger value when x greater than 0.4, where the superconducting properties were improved. These results suggest that the increase of lattice anharmonicity is preferable for superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex. The discussion includes …
We present the first experimental results of the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ of the newly discovered F-doped superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs (F-LaOFeAs) by global and local magnetization measurements. It is found that $H_{c1}$ showed an clear linear-$T$ dependence down to a temperature of 2 K, indicative of an unconventional pairing symmetry with a nodal gap function. Based on the d-wave model, we estimated a maximum gap value $Δ_0=4.0 \pm 0.6$ meV, in consistent with the recent specific heat and point-contact tunneling measurements. Taking the demagnetization factor into account, th…
We report on the synthesis and structural/ microstructural studies of iron based fluorine doped LaOFeAs superconductors. We have successfully synthesized fluorine doped superconducting LaO1-xFxFeAs materials by choosing lower temperature (1150^0C) and longer synthesis duration (60 hours) as compared to the standard values of these employed in the pioneering first contribution [Kamihara et al 2008 J Am Chem Soc 130 3296]. Decrease of lattice parameters as determined by x-ray diffraction confirm the substitution of fluorine. The superconducting transition temperature is 27.5 K which is observed …
By means of first-principles calculations? we have probed the peculiarities of the elecrtonic band structure and Fermi surface for the recently discovered layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSi2 in comparison with the parent phase LaOBiO2. The electronic factors prpmoting the transition of LaOBiS2 upon fluorine doping to superconducting state: inter-layer charge transfer, the evolution of the Fermi surface, and the dependence of the near-Fermi densities of states on x for LaO1-xFxBiS2 are evaluated and discussed in comparison with the available experiments.
We report the first Nernst effect measurement on the new iron-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs $(x=0.1)$. In the normal state, the Nernst signal is negative and very small. Below $T_{c}$ a large positive peak caused by vortex motion is observed. The flux flowing regime is quite large compared to conventional type-II superconductors. However, a clear deviation of the Nernst signal from normal state background and an anomalous depression of off-diagonal thermoelectric current in the normal state between $T_{c}$ and 50 K are observed. We propose that this anomaly in the normal state Ne…
Muon spin relaxation (MuSR) measurements in iron oxy-pnictide systems have revealed: (1) commensurate long-range order in undoped LaOFeAs; (2) Bessel function line shape in La(O0.97F0.03)FeAs which indicates possible incommensurate or stripe magnetism; (3) anomalous weak magnetism existing in superconducting LaOFeP, Ce(O0.84F0.16)FeAs, and Nd(O0.88F0.12)FeAs but absent in superconducting La(O0.92F0.08)FeAs; and (4) scaling of superfluid density and Tc in the Ce, La, and Nd-FeAs superconductors following a nearly linear relationship found in cuprates.
Recently, superconductivity has been discovered in rock-salt structured binary lanthanum monoxide LaO through state-of-the-art oxide thin-film epitaxy. In this work, we reveal that the normal state of superconducting LaO is a $Z_2$ nontrivial topological metal, where the Dirac point protected by the crystal symmetry is located around the Fermi energy. By analysing the orbital characteristics, we show that the nature of the topological band structure of LaO originates from the intra-atomic transition from the outer shell La 5$d$ to the inner shell 4$f$ orbitals driven by the strong octahedral c…
We report density functional theory calculations for the parent compound LaOFeAs of the newly discovered 26K Fe-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs. We find that the ground state is an ordered antiferromagnet, with staggered moment about 2.3$μ_B$, on the border with the Mott insulating state. We fit the bands crossing the Fermi surface, derived from Fe and As, to a tight-binding Hamiltonian using maximally localized Wannier functions on Fe 3d and As 4p orbitals. The model Hamiltonian accurately describes the Fermi surface obtained via first-principles calculations. Due to the evident pro…
We present point-contact spectroscopy data for junctions between a normal metal and the newly discovered F-doped superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1-δ}$FeAs (F-LaOFeAs). A zero-bias conductance peak was observed and its shape and magnitude suggests the presence of Andreev bound states at the surface of F-LaOFeAs, which provides a possible evidence of an unconventional pairing symmetry with a nodal gap function. The maximum gap value $Δ_0\approx3.9\pm0.7$meV was determined from the measured spectra, in good agreement with the recent experiments on specific heat and lower critical field.
The electronic and magnetic properties of the mother material LaOFeAs of new superconductors have been carefully studied using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on the generalized gradient approximation in the density functional theory. The present calculation predicts that the ground state of LaOFeAs is antiferromagnetic with a stripe type magnetic moment alignment leading to orthorhombic symmetry of the crystal. In this particular magnetic state, the density of states at the Fermi level is very small. On the other hand, LaOFeP has turned out to be paramagnetic and a go…
We have performed 75As Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements on aligned powders of the new LaO0.9F0.1FeAs superconductor. In the normal state, we find a strong temperature dependence of the spin shift and Korringa behavior of the spin lattice relaxation rate. In the superconducting state, we find evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap and spin-singlet pairing. Our measurements reveal a strong anisotropy of the spin lattice relaxation rate, which suggest that superconducting vortices contribute to the relaxation rate when the field is parallel to the c-axis but not for the p…
Raman spectra have been measured on iron-based quaternary CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs and LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs with varying fluorine doping at room temperatures. A group analysis has been made to clarify the optical modes. Based on the first principle calculations, the observed phonon modes can be assigned accordingly. In LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs, the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes related to the vibrations of La, are suppressed with increasing F doping. However F doping only has a small effect on the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes of Fe and As. The Raman modes of La and As are absent in rare-earth substituted CeO$_…
The 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to an iron-based layered superconductor LaO0.89F0.11FeAs with a transition temperature of 26 K and its parent material LaOFeAs. Throughout the temperature range from 4.2 to 298 K, a singlet spectrum with no magnetic splitting was observed as a main component of each Mössbauer spectrum of the F-doped superconductor. No additional internal magnetic field was observed for the spectrum measured at 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 7 T. On the other hand, the parent LaOFeAs shows a magnetic transition at around 140 K, and this temperature is slightly lower …
Here we report the first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations of the elastic properties of two related phases, namely, the ternary arsenide SrFe2As2 and the quaternary oxyarsenide LaOFeAs as the basic phases for the newly discovered "1111" and "122" 38-52K superconductors. The independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk moduli, compressibility, and shear moduli are evaluated and discussed. Additionally, numerical estimates of the elastic parameters of the polycrystalline LaOFeAs and SrFe2As2 ceramics are performed for the first time.
The competition of magnetic order and superconductivity is a key element in the physics of all unconventional superconductors, e.g. in high-transition-temperature cuprates 1, heavy fermions 2 and organic superconductors3. Here superconductivity is often found close to a quantum critical point where long-range antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed as a function of a control parameter, e.g. charge carrier doping or pressure. It is believed that dynamic spin fluctuations associated with this quantum critical behaviour are crucial for the mechanism of superconductivity. Recently high-tem…
Using angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy we have probed the novel LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs superconductor over a wide range of photon energies and temperatures. We have provided the first full characterization of the orbital character of the VB DOS and of the magnitude of the d-p hybridization energy. Finally, we have identified two characteristic temperatures: 90K where a pseudogap-like feature appears to close and 120K where a sudden change in the DOS near E$_F$ occurs. We associate these phenomena with the SDW magnetic ordering and the structural transition seen in the parent compo…
We report on the magnetic and superconducting properties of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 by means of zero- (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin spectroscopy measurements (uSR). Contrary to previous results on iron-based superconductors, measurements in zero field demonstrate the absence of magnetically ordered phases. TF-uSR data give access to the superfluid density, which shows a marked 2D character with a dominant s-wave temperature behavior. The field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth confirms this finding and further suggests the presence of an anisotropic superconducting gap.
Application of high pressure (HP) induces evolution from metallic to semi-metallic state in the layered superconducting LaO1-xFxBiSe2 phase, as concluded from ab initio calculations based on experimental P-dependent structural data. These changes in conduction properties are associated with a reported decrease in the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. However, further increase in pressure induces structural transformation in LaO1-xFxBiSe2 which results in a strong enhancement of its two-dimensionality with a related improvement in superconducting performance. In addition, the HP struc…
A series of layered nickel-based LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$NiAs compounds with x=0 to 0.15 are synthesized by solid state reactions. The pure LaONiAs exhibits bulk superconductivity with Tc $\sim$ 2.75 K. Partial substitution of oxygen by fluorine increases the transition temperature to $\sim 3.8$ K. The LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$NiAs sample shows a sharp superconducting transition and a sharp specific heat jump at the critical temperature. The magnitude of the specific heat jump is much larger than that expected from the weak-coupling BCS theory, indicating that this superconductor is in the strong coupling …
In this paper we discuss the normal and superconducting state properties of two pnictide superconductors, LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and density functional perturbation theory. Inclusion of multiband effects increases the Tc only marginally. To reproduce the experimental $T_c$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that standard elec…
We have employed a new route to synthesize single phase F-doped LaOFeAs compound and confirmed the superconductivity above 20 K in this Fe-based system. We show that the new superconductor has a rather high upper critical field of about 54 T. A clear signature of superconducting gap opening below T$_c$ was observed in the far-infrared reflectance spectra, with 2$Δ/\textit{k}T_c\approx$3.5-4.2. Furthermore, we show that the new superconductor has electron-type conducting carrier with a rather low carrier density.
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation potential has been applied to predict the elastic properties of quaternary oxyarsenide LaOFeAs - the basic phase for the newly discovered 26-52K superconductors. The optimized lattice parameters, independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk modulus B, compressibility betta, and shear modulus G are evaluated and discussed. For the first time the numerical estimates of the elastic parameters for polycrystalline LaOFeAs ceramics are performed. Our analysi…
In this study, the superconducting gap symmetry of LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSSe is elucidated through specific heat measurements with one single crystal of LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSSe. A clear jump is observed at 3.95 K in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSSe, suggesting bulk superconductivity. From specific heat measurements, $ΔC_\mathrm{e}/γT_\mathrm{c}$ and 2$Δ$(0)/$k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{c}$ are obtained as 2.31 and 4.5. These values indicate strong electron-phonon coupling superconductivity. The temperature ($T$) and magnetic-field ($H$) dependence of the electronic specific heat $C_\mathrm{e}(T, H)$ sugg…
Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of undoped and aliovalent-ion (Ca, F)-doped LaOFeP, which undergo superconducting transitions at transition temperatures (Tc) 4-7 K [Kamihara et al, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 128, 10012, (2006)], were investigated. Tc of the samples varied from 2.4 to 5.5 K in the undoped samples, and was increased up to ~7 K by Ca- and F-doping. The Tc increases are correlated with a decrease in the lattice volume. LaOFeP exhibits paramagnetism in the normal conducting state. Photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principle band calculations clarified that Fe 3d…
We report the theoretical study of the flux-lattice melting in the novel iron-based superconductor $LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs$ and $LaO_{0.925}F_{0.075}FeAs$. Using the Hypernetted-Chain closure and an efficient algorithm, we calculate the two-dimensional one-component plasma pair distribution functions, static structure factors and direct correlation functions at various temperatures. The Hansen-Verlet freezing criterion is shown to be valid for vortex-liquid freezing in type-II superconductors. Flux-lattice meting lines for $LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs$ and $LaO_{0.925}F_{0.075}FeAs$ are predicted throu…
High-quality polycrystalline samples of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 were obtained using high-pressure synthesis technique. The LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 sample prepared by heating at 700 C under 2 GPa showed superconductivity with superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) of Tconset = 11.1 and Tczero = 8.5 K in the electrical resistivity measurements and Tconset = 11.5 and Tcirr = 9.4 K in the magnetic susceptibility measurements, which are obviously higher than those of the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline samples obtained using conventional solid-state reaction. It was found that the high-Tc phase can be stabilize…
We report the specific heat measurements on the newly discovered Fe-based layered superconductor LaO_0.9F_{0.1-delta}FeAs with the onset transition temperature T_c \approx 28 K. A nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma(H) has been found in the low temperature limit, which is consistent with the prediction for a nodal superconductor. The maximum gap value Delta_0 \approx 3.4$\pm$0.5 meV was derived by analyzing gamma(H) based on the d-wave model. We also detected the electronic specific heat difference between 9 T and 0 T in wide temperature region…
By using a two-step method, we successfully synthesized the iron based new superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1-x}$FeAs. The Hall effect and magnetoresistance were measured in wide temperature region. A negative Hall coefficient R_H has been found implying a dominant conduction by electron-like charge carriers in this material. The charge carrier density determined at 100K is about 9.8E20 cm-3, which is close to the cuprate superconductors. It is further found that the magnetoresistance does not follow the Kohler's law. Meanwhile, the Hall coefficient, the resistivity at 0T, and magnetoresistance…
We present zero field and transverse field \muSR experiments on the recently discovered electron doped Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs. The zero field experiments on underdoped (x=0.075) and optimally doped (x=0.1) samples rule out any static magnetic order above 1.6 K in these superconducting samples. From transverse field experiments in the vortex phase we deduce the temperature and field dependence of the superfluid density. Whereas the temperature dependence is consistent with a weak coupling BCS s-wave or a dirty d-wave gap function scenario, the field dependence strongly evidenc…
Superconducting properties under high magnetic fields for the novel BiS2-based layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 (polycrystalline sample prepared using the high-pressure synthesis method) have been investigated. The anisotropy of the upper critical field was discussed by analyzing the temperature dependence of the temperature derivative of resistivity. The temperature dependence of upper critical field showed an anomalous behavior with a characteristic magnetic field of 8 T. We revealed that the anomalous behavior was caused by the existence of three kinds of upper critical field, HC2max, …
Centrosymmetric compounds with local inversion symmetry breaking have tremendously interesting and intriguing physical properties. In this study, we focus on a BiCh$_2$-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor, as a system with local inversion asymmetry, because spin polarisation based on the Rashba-Dresselhaus-type spin-orbit coupling has been observed in centrosymmetric BiCh$_2$-based LaOBiS$_2$ systems, while the BiCh$_2$ layer lacks local inversion symmetry. Herein, we report the existence of extremely high in-plane upper critical fields in the BiCh$_2$-based system LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS…
The densities of the valence and conduction band electronic states of the newly discovered layered superconductors LaOFeAs, LaO$_{0.87}$F$_{0.13}$FeAs (Tc=26 K), SmO$_{0.95}$F$_{0.05}$FeAs and SmO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$FeAs (Tc=43 K) are studied using soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy combined with FP LAPW calculations of LaOFeAs, LaO$_{0.875}$FeAs and LaO$_{0.875}$F${0.125}$FeAs. The Fe 3d-states are localized in energy near the top of the valence band and are partially hybridized with p-type O (2p), As (4p), and La (6p) states approximately 3 eV below the Fermi energy. The Fe L3 X-…
We have measured the electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance (MR) on single crystals of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and NdOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. All the transport properties in PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ are similar to those in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and NdOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ at high temperatures, indicating the localized character of 4$f$-electrons. The transverse MR both in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ tends to saturate for wide field directions, indicating these compounds to be uncompensated metals with no open orbit. We have determi…
High-resolution and high-flux neutron as well as X-ray powder-diffraction experiments were performed on the oxypnictide series LaO(1-x)FxFeAs with 0<x<0.15 in order to study the crystal and magnetic structure. The magnetic symmetry of the undoped compound corresponds to those reported for ReOFeAs (with Re a rare earth) and for AFe2As2 (A=Ba, Sr) materials. We find an ordered magnetic moment of 0.63(1)muB at 2 K in LaOFeAs, which is significantly larger than the values previously reported for this compound. A sizable ordered magnetic moment is observed up to a F-doping of 4.5% whereas there is …
We use core level and valence band soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES) to investigate electronic structure of new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$. Core level spectra of doped samples show a new spectral feature at the lower binding energy side of the Bi 4${f}$ main peak, which may be explained by core-hole screening with metallic states near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$). Experimental electronic structure and its ${x}$ dependence (higher binding energy shift of the valence band as well as appearance of new states near $E_{\rm F}$ having dominant Bi 6${p}$…
Using state-of-the-art first-principles calculations we study the magnetic behaviour of CeOFeAs. We find the Ce layer moments oriented perpendicular to those of the Fe layers. An analysis of incommensurate magnetic structures reveals that the Ce-Ce magnetic coupling is rather weak with, however, a strong Fe-Ce coupling. Comparison of the origin of the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural distortion in CeOFeAs and LaOFeAs show marked differences; in CeOFeAs the distortion is stabilized by a lowering of spectral weight at the Fermi level, while in LaOFeAs by a reduction in magnetic frustration.…
We report upper critical field B_c2(T) data for disordered (arsenic-deficient) LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and magnetic field range up to 47 T. Because of the large linear slope of Bc2 about -5.4 T/K to -6.6 T/K near Tc = 28.5 K the T-dependence of the in-plane Bc2(T) shows a flattening near 23 K above 30 T which points to Pauli-limited behavior with Bc2(0) about 63-68 T. Our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional and unconventional superconducting pairings.
We study a spin $S$ quantum Heisenberg model on the Fe lattice of the rare-earth oxypnictide superconductors. Using both large $S$ and large $N$ methods, we show that this model exhibits a sequence of two phase transitions: from a high temperature symmetric phase to a narrow region of intermediate ``nematic'' phase, and then to a low temperature spin ordered phase. Identifying phases by their broken symmetries, these phases correspond precisely to the sequence of structural (tetragonal to monoclinic) and magnetic transitions that have been recently revealed in neutron scattering studies of LaO…
The effect of atomic disorder induced by neutrons irradiation on superconducting and normal state properties of polycrystalline LaFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 was investigated. The irradiation of the sample by a moderate neutron fluence F = 1.6*1019 cm^-2 at Tirr = 50 +- 10 C leads to the suppression of superconductivity which recovers almost completely after annealing at temperatures Tann < 750 C. It is shown that the reduction of superconducting transition temperature Tc under atomic disordering is not determined solely by the value of Hall concentration nH, i.e. doping level, but is governed by the reduc…
We report magnetization measurements of As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta (delta about 0.06) samples with improved superconducting properties as compared with As-stoichiometric optimally doped La-1111 samples. In this As-deficient system with almost homogeneously distributed As-vacancies (AV), as suggested by the (75)As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements,we observe a strong enhancement of the spin-susceptibility by a factor of 3-7. This observation is attributed to the presence of an electronically localized state around each AV, carrying a magnetic moment of about 3.2 mu_Bohr…
Using state-of-the-art first-principles calculations we have elucidated the complex magnetic and structural dependence of LaOFeAs upon doping. Our key findings are that (i) doping results in an orthorhombic ground state and (ii) there is a commensurate to incommensurate transition in the magnetic structure between $x=0.025$ and $x=0.04$. Our calculations further imply that in this system magnetic order persists up to the onset of superconductivity at the critical doping of $x=0.05$. Finally, our investigations of the undoped parent compound reveal an unusually pronounced dependence of the magn…
The new rare-earth arsenate superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain-boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak-coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagneti…
We report transport properties for layered BiCh2-based (Ch = S, Se) superconductors LaO1-xFxBiS2-ySey (x = 0.2, 0.5, y = 0-1.05) and the observation of weak antilocalization (WAL). Electrical resistivity and Hall coefficients for the Se-poor samples increase with decreasing temperature. The increase becomes less pronounced with increasing Se concentration indicating a loss of insulating behavior. Interestingly, the moderately Se-substituted samples exhibit metallic behavior in the high-temperature region and a weak increase in the resistivity in the low-temperature regions, which indicates the…
We use group theory to classify the superconducting states of systems with two orbitals on a tetragonal lattice. The orbital part of the superconducting gap function can be either symmetric or anti-symmetric. For the orbital symmetric state, the parity is even for spin singlet and odd for spin triplet; for the orbital anti-symmetric state, the parity is odd for spin singlet and even for spin triplet. The gap basis functions are obtained with the use of the group chain scheme by taking into account the spin-orbit coupling. In the weak pairing limit, the orbital anti-symmetric state is only stab…
We have studied the reflectance of the recently discovered superconductor LaO_0.9F0.FeAs in a wide energy range from the far infrared to the visible regime. We report on the observation of infrared active phonons, the plasma edge (PE) and possible interband transitions. On the basis of this data and the reported in-plane penetration depth lambda_L(0) about 254 nm [H. Luetkens et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 101, 0970009 (2008)] a disorder sensitive relatively small value of the total electron electron-boson coupling constant lambda_tot=lambda_e-ph+lambda_e-sp ~ 0.6 +- 0.35 can be estimated adoptin…
Correlation between crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 was investigated. We have prepared LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline samples with various lattice constants. It was found that the annealing the sample under high pressure generated uniaxial strain along the c axis. Further, the highly-strained sample showed higher superconducting properties. We concluded that the uniaxial strain along the c axis was positively linked with the enhancement of superconductivity in the LaO1-xFxBiS2 system.
Novel BiS2-based superconductors LaO1-xFxBiS2 prepared by the high pressure synthesis technique were systematically studied. It was found that the high pressure annealing strongly the lattice as compared to the LaO1-xFxBiS2 samples prepared by conventional solid state reaction at ambient pressure. Bulk superconductivity was observed within a wide F-concentration range of x = 0.2 ~ 0.7. On the basis of those results, we have established a phase diagram of LaO1-xFxBiS2.
In spite of Anderson's theorem, disorder is known to affect superconductivity in conventional s-wave superconductors. In most superconductors, the degree of disorder is fixed during sample preparation. Here we report measurements of the superconducting properties of the two-dimensional gas that forms at the interface between LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) in the (111) crystal orientation, a system that permits \emph{in situ} tuning of carrier density and disorder by means of a back gate voltage $V_g$. Like the (001) oriented LAO/STO interface, superconductivity at the (111) LAO/STO interf…
We report the synthesizing and characterization of the hole doped Ni-based superconductor ($La_{1-x}Sr_{x})ONiAs$. By substituting La with Sr, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is increased from 2.75 K of the parent phase $LaONiAs$ to 3.7 K at the doping levels x= 0.1 - 0.2. The curve $T_c$ versus hole concentration shows a symmetric behavior as the electron doped samples $La(O_{1-x}F_{x})NiAs$. The normal state resistivity in Ni-based samples shows a good metallic behavior and reveals the absence of an anomaly which appears in the Fe-based system at about 150 K, suggesting that…
We have performed transverse-field muon spin relaxation (TF-$μ$SR) measurements on ambient-pressure-grown polycrystalline $\mathrm{LaO_{0.5}F_{0.5}BiS_{2}}$. From these measurements, no signature of magnetic order is found down to 25 mK. The value of the magnetic penetration depth extrapolated to 0 K is 0.89 (5) $μ$m. The temperature dependence of superconducting penetration depth is best described by either a multigap s + s-wave model with $Δ_{1}$ = 0.947 (7) meV and $Δ_{2}$ = 0.22 (4) meV or the ansiotropic s-wave model with $Δ(0)$ = 0.776 meV and anisotropic gap amplitude ratio $Δ_{min}/Δ_{…
We examined Lead (Pb) Substitution effect on a single crystal of a layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Pb concentration dependence of the lattice constant showed slight anomaly at about 8% and 9% substitution of Pb for Bi. These samples showed the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the superconducting volume fraction. Furthermore, these samples showed the anomaly in the temperature dependence of the resistivity at about 150K. These results were not observed in Pb substituted NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. We report bulk superconductivity at 2.5K in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound through the DC magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. The synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm and Reitveld refined lattice parameters are a= 4.15(1)A and c=14.02(2)A. The lower critical field of Hc1= 40Oe, at temperature 2K is estimated through the low field magnetization measurements. The LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound showed metallic normal state electrical resistivity with residual resistivity value of 1.35mΩ-cm. The compound is type-II su…
We discuss the electronic structure, lattice dynamics and electron-phonon interaction of newly discovered superconductor LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ using density functional based calculations. A strong Fermi surface nesting at $\mathbf{k}$=($π$,$π$,0) suggests a proximity to charge density wave instability and leads to imaginary harmonic phonons at this $\mathbf{k}$ point associated with in-plane displacements of S atoms. Total energy analysis resolves only a shallow double-well potential well preventing the appearance of static long-range order. Both harmonic and anharmonic contributions t…
Fundamental and higher harmonics of the AC magnetic susceptibility have been measured on a LaO_0.92F_0.08FeAs sample as a function of the temperature, at various amplitudes and frequencies of the AC magnetic field, with a small superimposed DC field parallel to the AC field. The granularity of the sample has been investigated and the inter-grain and intra-grain contributions have been clearly individuated looking at both the first and third harmonics. The vortex dynamics has been also analyzed, and a comparison with the magnetic behavior of both the MgB_2 and the cuprate superconductors has be…
We have demonstrated a pressure-induced phase transition from a low-Tc phase to a high-Tc phase in a single crystal of the superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2. The high-Tc phase appears at 2.16 GPa and the maximum superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is observed at 6.7 K under 2.44 GPa. Although the anisotropy (γ) for the low-Tc phase is estimated to be 20, it is reduced by around half (9.3) in the high-Tc phase. This tendency is the same for the BiS2 system. The Tc of LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 has continued to increase up to the maximum pressure of this study (2.44 GPa). Therefore applied further pre…
We report resistivity and upper critical field B_c2(T) data for As deficient LaO_(0.9)F_(0.1)FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and high field range up to 60 T. These disordered samples exhibit a slightly enhanced superconducting transition at T_c = 29 K and a significantly enlarged slope dB_(c2))/dT = -5.4 T/K near T_c which contrasts with a flattening of B_(c2)(T) starting near 23 K above 30 T. This flattening is interpreted as Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_(c2)(0) approx 63 T. We compare our results with B_(c2)(T)-data reported in the literature for clean and disordered samples. W…
