The electronic and magnetic properties of the mother material LaOFeAs of new superconductors have been carefully studied using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on the generalized gradient approximation in the density functional theory. The present calculation predicts that the ground state of LaOFeAs is antiferromagnetic with a stripe type magnetic moment alignment leading to orthorhombic symmetry of the crystal. In this particular magnetic state, the density of states at the Fermi level is very small. On the other hand, LaOFeP has turned out to be paramagnetic and a good metal. Implications of the results regarding the experimental observations will also be presented.
Here we report the first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations of the elastic properties of two related phases, namely, the ternary arsenide SrFe2As2 and the quaternary oxyarsenide LaOFeAs as the basic phases for the newly discovered "1111" and "122" 38-52K superconductors. The independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk moduli, compressibility, and shear moduli are evaluated and discussed. Additionally, numerical estimates of the elastic parameters of the polycrystalline LaOFeAs and SrFe2As2 ceramics are performed for the first time.
The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation potential has been applied to predict the elastic properties of quaternary oxyarsenide LaOFeAs - the basic phase for the newly discovered 26-52K superconductors. The optimized lattice parameters, independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk modulus B, compressibility betta, and shear modulus G are evaluated and discussed. For the first time the numerical estimates of the elastic parameters for polycrystalline LaOFeAs ceramics are performed. Our analysi…
The 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to an iron-based layered superconductor LaO0.89F0.11FeAs with a transition temperature of 26 K and its parent material LaOFeAs. Throughout the temperature range from 4.2 to 298 K, a singlet spectrum with no magnetic splitting was observed as a main component of each Mössbauer spectrum of the F-doped superconductor. No additional internal magnetic field was observed for the spectrum measured at 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 7 T. On the other hand, the parent LaOFeAs shows a magnetic transition at around 140 K, and this temperature is slightly lower …
We describe a new methodology of synthesizing the oxypnictide superconductors with potassium fluoride as a source as a source of fluorine instead of LaF3. This route also allows the substitution of potassium at lanthanum sites which leads to an increase in the upper critical field as would be expected for a multiband superconductor. We also report the highest reported Tc onset of 28.5K and highest upper critical field in these superconductors.
The layered structure of the iron based superconductors gives rise to a more or less pronounced two-dimensionality of their electronic structure, most pronounced in LaOFeAs. A consequence are distinct surface states to be expected to influence any surface sensitive experimental probe. In this work a detailed density functional analysis of the cleavage behavior and the surface electronic structure of LaOFeAs is presented. The surface states are obtained to form two-dimensional bands with their own Fermi surfaces markedly different from the bulk electronic structure.
Theoretical calculations under the scheme of WIEN2k computer package had been performed on the pristine compound LaOFeAs, as well as on LaO1-xFxFeAs. One factor crucial to the manifestation of superconductivity seems to be fluorine doping; hence we search for its effect. Paying close attention to Fe d-orbitals upon doping of F by O, at first, Fe d-orbitals have dz2 symmetry, changing gradually to something akin to dx2-y2 which seems more prone to conductivity than the former one. This issue agree with the accepted results happened in the copper-based high-temperature superconductors.
We present the first experimental results of the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ of the newly discovered F-doped superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs (F-LaOFeAs) by global and local magnetization measurements. It is found that $H_{c1}$ showed an clear linear-$T$ dependence down to a temperature of 2 K, indicative of an unconventional pairing symmetry with a nodal gap function. Based on the d-wave model, we estimated a maximum gap value $Δ_0=4.0 \pm 0.6$ meV, in consistent with the recent specific heat and point-contact tunneling measurements. Taking the demagnetization factor into account, th…
We present a detailed study on the magnetic order in the undoped mother compound LaOFeAs of the recently discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs. In particular, we present local probe measurements of the magnetic properties of LaOFeAs by means of $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and muon spin relaxation in zero external field along with magnetization and resistivity studies. These experiments prove a commensurate static magnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered moment of 0.25(5) $μ_B$ at the iron site below T_N = 138 K, well separated from a structural phase transition at …
The densities of the valence and conduction band electronic states of the newly discovered layered superconductors LaOFeAs, LaO$_{0.87}$F$_{0.13}$FeAs (Tc=26 K), SmO$_{0.95}$F$_{0.05}$FeAs and SmO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$FeAs (Tc=43 K) are studied using soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy combined with FP LAPW calculations of LaOFeAs, LaO$_{0.875}$FeAs and LaO$_{0.875}$F${0.125}$FeAs. The Fe 3d-states are localized in energy near the top of the valence band and are partially hybridized with p-type O (2p), As (4p), and La (6p) states approximately 3 eV below the Fermi energy. The Fe L3 X-…
We present point-contact spectroscopy data for junctions between a normal metal and the newly discovered F-doped superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1-δ}$FeAs (F-LaOFeAs). A zero-bias conductance peak was observed and its shape and magnitude suggests the presence of Andreev bound states at the surface of F-LaOFeAs, which provides a possible evidence of an unconventional pairing symmetry with a nodal gap function. The maximum gap value $Δ_0\approx3.9\pm0.7$meV was determined from the measured spectra, in good agreement with the recent experiments on specific heat and lower critical field.
We compute the electronic structure, momentum resolved spectral function and optical conductivity of the new superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs within the combination of the Density functional theory and the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. We find that the compound in the normal state is a strongly correlated metal and the parent compound is a bad metal at the verge of the metal insulator transition. We argue that the superconductivity is not phonon mediated.
We study a spin $S$ quantum Heisenberg model on the Fe lattice of the rare-earth oxypnictide superconductors. Using both large $S$ and large $N$ methods, we show that this model exhibits a sequence of two phase transitions: from a high temperature symmetric phase to a narrow region of intermediate ``nematic'' phase, and then to a low temperature spin ordered phase. Identifying phases by their broken symmetries, these phases correspond precisely to the sequence of structural (tetragonal to monoclinic) and magnetic transitions that have been recently revealed in neutron scattering studies of LaO…
High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting LaOFeAs parent compound and various superconducting R(O1-xFx)FeAs (R=La, Ce and Pr) compounds. We found that the parent LaOFeAs compound shows a metallic character. Through extensive measurements, we have identified several common features in the electronic structure of these Fe-based compounds: (1). 0.2 eV feature in the valence band; (2). A universal 13~16 meV feature; (3). A clear Fermi cutoff showing zero leading-edge shift in the superconducting state;(4). Lack of superconducting coherence peak(s); (5)…
From first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of the ground state of LaOFeAs. The Fe spins are found to be collinear antiferromagnetic ordered, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest and next-nearest neighbor superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions. The structure transition observed by neutron scattering is shown to be magnetically driven. Our study suggests that the antiferromagnetic fluctuation plays an important role in the Fe-based superconductors. This sheds light on the understanding of the pairing mechanism in these mate…
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
First-principles electronic structure calculations have been very useful in understanding some of the properties of the new iron-based superconductors. Further explorations of the role of the individual atomic orbitals in explaining various aspects of research in these materials, including experimental work, would benefit from the availability of a tight-binding(TB) Hamiltonian that reproduces accurately the first-principles band structure results. In this work we have used the NRL-TB method to construct a TB Hamiltonian from Linearized Augmented Plane Wave(LAPW) results. Our TB model includes…
In this paper we discuss the normal and superconducting state properties of two pnictide superconductors, LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and density functional perturbation theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant $λ=0.21$ and logarithmic-averaged frequency $ω_{ln}=206 K$, give a maximum $T_c$ of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Inclusion of multiband effects increases the Tc only marginally. To reproduce the experimental $T_c$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that standard elec…
We report a comparison study of LaOFeP and LaOFeAs, two parent compounds of recently discovered iron-pnictide superconductors, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Both systems exhibit some common features that are very different from well-studied cuprates. In addition, important differences have also been observed between these two ferrooxypnictides. For LaOFeP, quantitative agreement can be found between our photoemission data and the LDA band structure calculations, suggesting that a weak coupling approach based on an itinerant ground state may be more appropriate for understand…
A series of layered (Sr$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds with nominal x=0 to 0.40 are synthesized by solid state reaction method. Similar to other parent compounds of iron-based pnictide superconductors, the pure SrFe$_2$As$_2$ shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 210 K, which was ascribed to the spin-density-wave instability. The anomaly temperature is much higher than those observed in LaOFeAs and BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the two prototype parent compounds with ZrCuSiAs- and ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structures. K-doping strongly suppresses this anomaly and induces superconductivity. Like in the case…
We present results of it ab initio LDA calculations of electronic structure of "next generation" layered ironpnictide High-Tc superconductor LiFeAs (Tc=18K). Obtained electronic structure of LiFeAs is very similar to recently studied ReOFeAs (Re=La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm) and AFe2As2 (A=Ba,Sr) compounds. Namely close to the Fermi level its electronic properties are also determined ma inly by Fe 3d-orbitals of FeAs4 two-dimensional layers. Band dispersions of LiFeAs are very similar to the LaOFeAs and BaFe2As2 systems as well as the shape of the Fe-3d density o f states and Fermi surface.
We have employed a new route to synthesize single phase F-doped LaOFeAs compound and confirmed the superconductivity above 20 K in this Fe-based system. We show that the new superconductor has a rather high upper critical field of about 54 T. A clear signature of superconducting gap opening below T$_c$ was observed in the far-infrared reflectance spectra, with 2$Δ/\textit{k}T_c\approx$3.5-4.2. Furthermore, we show that the new superconductor has electron-type conducting carrier with a rather low carrier density.
The puzzling nature of magnetic and lattice phase transitions of iron pnictides is investigated via a first-principles Wannier function analysis of representative parent compound LaOFeAs. A rare ferro-orbital ordering is found to give rise to the recently observed highly anisotropic magnetic coupling, and drive the phase transitions--without resorting to widely employed frustration or nesting picture. The revealed necessity of the additional orbital physics leads to a correlated electronic structure fundamentally distinct from that of the cuprates. In particular, the strong coupling to the mag…
The electronic structure of LaOFeAs, a parent compound of iron-arsenic superconductors, is studied by angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. By examining its dependence on photon energy, polarization, sodium dosing and the counting of Fermi surface volume, both the bulk and the surface contributions are identified. We find that a bulk band moves toward high binding energies below structural transition, and shifts smoothly across the spin density wave transition by about 25 meV. Our data suggest the band reconstruction may play a crucial role in the spin density wave transition, and the stru…
We investigated the recently found superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). From a comparison of the O K-edge with LDA calculations we find good agreement and are able to explain the structure and changes of the spectra with electron doping. An important result from this edge is a limitation of the Hubbard U to values not significantly larger than 1 eV. From experimental Fe L_2,3-edge spectra and charge transfer multiplet calculations we gain further information on important physical values such as hopping parameters, the charge transfer energy Delta, and the on-…
Recent experiments have reported that inserting metal atoms or small molecules in between the FeSe layers of $β$-FeSe can significantly enhance the superconducting transition temperature. Here, based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we propose a stable compound SnOFeSe by alternatively stacking the SnO and $β$-FeSe layers. The predicted SnOFeSe has the same tetragonal structure as the well-known FeAs-based compound LaOFeAs, meanwhile their electronic structures in the nonmagnetic state are quite similar. The magnetic ground state of SnOFeSe is predicted to be the dimer an…
In order to assist the search of new superconductors in iron selenide materials by intercalation, we calculate the crystal and electronic structures of MgOFeSe using the first-principles density functional theory. MgOFeSe is isotructural to the parent compound of iron pnictide superconductor LaOFeAs. In LaOFeAs, the anion O$^{2-}$ is located at the center of each LaO tetrahedra. But for MgOFeSe, we find that the crystal structure with the cation Mg$^{2+}$ as the tetrahedral center in the MgO layer is energetically more stable. The low energy band structures around the Fermi surfaces of MgOFeSe…
A review of high-pressure studies on Fe-pnictide superconductors is given. The pressure effects on the magnetic and superconducting transitions are discussed for different classes of doped and undoped FeAs-compounds, ROFeAs (R = rare earth), AeFe2As2 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Ba), and AFeAs (A = Li, Na). Pressure tends to decrease the magnetic transition temperature in the undoped or only slightly doped compounds. The superconducting Tc increases with pressure for underdoped FeAs-pnictides, remains approximately constant for optimal doping, and decreases linearly in the overdoped range. The undoped LaOFeA…
In high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxides, it is generally believed that antiferromagnetism plays a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism because superconductivity occurs when mobile electrons or holes are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the rare-earth (R) iron-based oxide systems [RO1-xFxFeAs] has generated enormous interest because these materials are the first noncopper oxide superconductors with Tc exceeding 50 K. The parent (nonsuperconducting) LaOFeAs material is metallic but shows anomalies near 150…
Magnetic spin fluctuations is one candidate to produce the bosonic modes that mediate the superconductivity in the ferrous superconductors. Up until now, all of the LaOFeAs and BaFe2As2 structure types have simple commensurate magnetic ground states, as result of nesting Fermi surfaces. This type of spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is known to be vulnerable to shifts in the Fermi surface when electronic densities are altered at the superconducting compositions. Superconductivity has more recently been discovered in alpha-Fe(Te,Se), whose electronically active antifluorite planes are isos…
High-resolution and high-flux neutron as well as X-ray powder-diffraction experiments were performed on the oxypnictide series LaO(1-x)FxFeAs with 0<x<0.15 in order to study the crystal and magnetic structure. The magnetic symmetry of the undoped compound corresponds to those reported for ReOFeAs (with Re a rare earth) and for AFe2As2 (A=Ba, Sr) materials. We find an ordered magnetic moment of 0.63(1)muB at 2 K in LaOFeAs, which is significantly larger than the values previously reported for this compound. A sizable ordered magnetic moment is observed up to a F-doping of 4.5% whereas there is …
Results of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at Fe L-edges and electronic structure calculations of LiFeAs and NaFeAs are presented. Both experiment and theory show that in the vicinity of the Fermi energy, the density of states is dominated by contributions from Fe 3d-states. The comparison of Fe L2,3 non-resonant and resonant (excited at L2-threshold) X-ray emission spectra with spectra of LaOFeAs and CaFe2As2 show a great similarity in energy and I(L2)/I(L3) intensity ratio. The I(L2)/I(L3) intensity ratio of all FeAs-based superconductors is found to be more similar t…
This work is provoked by recent discovery of new class prototype systems AFFeAs (A=Sr,Ca) of novel layered ironpnictide High-Tc superconductors (Tc=36K). Here we report ab initio LDA results for electronic structure of the AFFeAs systems. We provide detailed comparison between electronic properties of both new systems and reference LaOFeAs (La111) compound. In the vicinity of the Fermi level all three systems have essentially the same band dispersions. However for iron fluoride systems F(2p) states were found to be separated in energy from As(4p) ones in contrast to La111, where O(2p) states s…
A puzzle in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x is that the magnetic moment obtained by first-principle electronic structure calculations is unexpectedly much larger than the experimentally observed one. For example, the calculated value is ~ 2.0 μ_B in the mother compound, while it is ~ 0.3 μ_B in experiments. We find that the puzzle is solved within the framework LDA + U by expanding the U value into a slightly negative range. We show U dependence of the obtained magnetic moment in both the undoped x=0.0 and doped x = 0.125. These results reveal that the magnetic moment is drastic…
We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation and a band structure calculation for the pnictide superconductor BaNi$_2$P$_2$, which is isostructural to BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the mother compound of the iron-pnictide high-$T_c$ superconductor (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$. Six dHvA-frequency branches with frequencies up to $\sim$8 kT were observed, and they are in excellent agreement with results of the band-structure calculation. The determined Fermi surface is large, enclosing about one electron and hole per formula unit, and three-dimensional. This is in contrast to the small …
We review the physics of pair density wave (PDW) superconductors. We begin with a macroscopic description that emphasizes order induced by PDW states, such as charge density wave, and discuss related vestigial states that emerge as a consequence of partial meting of the PDW order. We review and critically discuss the mounting experimental evidence for such PDW order in the cuprate superconductors, the status of the theoretical microscopic description of such order, and the current debate on whether the PDW is a "mother order" or another competing order in the cuprates. In addition, we give an …
Discoveries of marked similarities to high-$T_{\text{c}}$ cuprate superconductors point to the realization of superconductivity in the doped $J_{\text{eff}} = 1 / 2$ Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Contrary to the mother compound of cuprate superconductors, several stacking patterns of in-plane canted antiferromagnetic moments have been reported, which are distinguished by the ferromagnetic components as $-++-$, $++++$, and $-+-+$. In this paper, we clarify unconventional features of the superconductivity coexisting with $-++-$ and $-+-+$ structures. Combining the group theoretical analysis and …
The structural, electronic, magnetic, and vibrational properties of LaFeSiH$_x$ for $x$ between 0 and 1 are investigated using density functional calculations. We find that the electronic and magnetic properties are strongly controlled by the hydrogen concentration $x$ in LaFeSiH$_x$. While fully hydrogenated LaFeSiH has a striped antiferromagnetic ground state, the underdoped LaFeSiH$_x$ for $x\leq0.75$ is not magnetic within the virtual crystal approximation or with explicit doping of supercells. The antiferromagnetic configuration breaks the symmetry of Fe $d$ orbitals and increases electro…
Muon spin relaxation (MuSR) measurements in iron oxy-pnictide systems have revealed: (1) commensurate long-range order in undoped LaOFeAs; (2) Bessel function line shape in La(O0.97F0.03)FeAs which indicates possible incommensurate or stripe magnetism; (3) anomalous weak magnetism existing in superconducting LaOFeP, Ce(O0.84F0.16)FeAs, and Nd(O0.88F0.12)FeAs but absent in superconducting La(O0.92F0.08)FeAs; and (4) scaling of superfluid density and Tc in the Ce, La, and Nd-FeAs superconductors following a nearly linear relationship found in cuprates.
We report experimental results of ^{75}As and ^{139}La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the iron-based layered La(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs (x= 0.0, 0.04 and 0.11) system. In the undoped LaOFeAs, 1/T_1 of ^{139}La exhibits a distinct peak at T_N ~ 142 K below which the spectra become broadened due to the internal magnetic field attributed to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. In the 4% F-doped sample, 1/T_1T exhibits a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence down to 30 K, suggesting the development of AFM spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature. In the 11% F-doped sample, in contrast, pseudogap …
We unveil the novel physical origin of the insulating block checkerboard antiferromagnetism in vacancy-ordered K2Fe4Se5. Our first-principles electronic structure analysis reveals its incompatibility with a simple Fermi-surface nesting or Mott insulator scenario, and suggests the picture of coexisting itinerant and localized electronic states. Consistently, we demonstrate that it can be unified with the metallic collinear or bicollinear antiferromagnetism of the vacancy-free parent compounds LaOFeAs, BaFe2As2, or FeTe in the spin-fermion model. These results indicate that the blocking effects …
The magnetic fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point (QCP) are widely believed to cause the non-Fermi liquid behaviors and unconventional superconductivities, for example, in heavy fermion systems and high temperature cuprate superconductors. Recently, superconductivity has been discovered in iron-based layered compound $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with $T_c$=26 K\cite{yoichi}, and it competes with spin-density-wave (SDW) order\cite{dong}. Neutron diffraction shows a long-rang SDW-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $\sim 134$ K in LaOFeAs\cite{cruz,mcguire}. Therefore, a possible QCP and…
This paper explains the multi-orbital band structures and itinerant magnetism of the iron-pnictide and chalcogenides. We first describe the generic band structure of an isolated FeAs layer. Use of its Abelian glide-mirror group allows us to reduce the primitive cell to one FeAs unit. From density-functional theory, we generate the set of eight Fe $d$ and As $p$ localized Wannier functions for LaOFeAs and their tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian, $h(k)$. We discuss the topology of the bands, i.e. allowed and avoided crossings, the origin of the d6 pseudogap, as well as the role of the As $p$ orbita…
We investigate the magnetic phase diagram of the newly discovered iron-based high temperature oxypnictide superconductors of the type RO$_{1-x}$F$_x $FeAs, with rare earths R=La, Sm, Nd, Pr and Ce by means of {\it ab initio} SGGA and SGGA+U density functional computations. We find undoped LaOFeAs to be a Mott insulator when incorporating electronic correlations via SGGA+U for any physically relevant value of $U$. The doped compounds are according to SGGA conductors with a transition from an antiferromagnetic to a non-magnetic state at a hole doping of concentration $x_c$=0.075 for R=Nd, Pr and…
The chromium arsenides BaCr2As2 and BaCrFeAs2 with ThCr2Si2 type structure (space group I4/mmm; also adopted by '122' iron arsenide superconductors) have been suggested as mother compounds for possible new superconductors. DFT-based calculations of the electronic structure evidence metallic antiferromagnetic ground states for both compounds. By powder neutron diffraction we confirm for BaCr2As2 a robust ordering in the antiferromagnetic G-type structure at T_N = 580 K with mu_Cr = 1.9 mu_B at T = 2K. Anomalies in the lattice parameters point to magneto-structural coupling effects. In BaCrFeAs2…
