5 pages and 7 figures; add the appendix to explain how to determine the nearest and next-nearest Fe-Fe exchange interactions J1 and J2. The overcounting on J1 and J2 in previous version in 2x2 Fe-Fe unit cell with the periodic boundary conditions has been corrected. It is found that J1 is close to J2
From first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of the ground state of LaOFeAs. The Fe spins are found to be collinear antiferromagnetic ordered, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest and next-nearest neighbor superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions. The structure transition observed by neutron scattering is shown to be magnetically driven. Our study suggests that the antiferromagnetic fluctuation plays an important role in the Fe-based superconductors. This sheds light on the understanding of the pairing mechanism in these materials.
When either electron or hole doped at concentrations $x\sim 0.1$, the LaOFeAs family displays remarkably high temperature superconductivity with T$_c$ up to 55 K. In the most energetically stable $\vec Q_M = (π,π)$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase comprised of tetragonal-symmetry breaking alternating chains of aligned spins, there is a deep pseudogap in the Fe 3d states centered at the Fermi energy, and very strong magnetophonon coupling is uncovered. Doping (of either sign) beyond $x \sim 0.1$ results in Fe 3d heavy mass carriers ($m^*\sim 4-8$) with a large Fermi surface. Calculated Fe-Fe trans…
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
The first-principles electronic structure calculations made substantial contribution to study of high $T_c$ iron-pnictide superconductors. By the calculations, LaFeAsO was first predicted to be an antiferromagnetic semimetal, and the novel bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order was predicted for $α$-FeTe. Moreover, based on the calculations the underlying mechanism was proposed to be Arsenic-bridged antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the next-nearest neighbor Fe moments. In this article, this physical picture is further presented and discussed in association with the elaborate f…
We predict atomic, electronic, and magnetic structures of a hypothetical compound LaOFeSb by first-principles density-functional calculations. It is shown that LaOFeSb prefers a stripe-type antiferromagnetic phase (i.e., spin density wave (SDW) phase) to the non-magnetic (NM) phase, with a larger Fe spin moment and greater SDW-NM energy difference than those of LaOFeAs. The SDW phase is found to favor the orthorhombic structure while the tetragonal structure is more stable in the NM phase. In the NM-phase LaOFeSb, the electronic bandwidth near the Fermi energy is reduced compared with LaOFeAs,…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we find that the ground state of PbO-type tetragonal $α$-FeTe is in a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state, in which the Fe local moments ($\sim2.5μ_B$) are ordered ferromagnetically along a diagonal direction and antiferromagnetically along the other diagonal direction on the Fe square lattice. This bi-collinear order results from the interplay among the nearest, next nearest, and next next nearest neighbor superexchange interactions $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$, mediated by Te $5p$-band. In contrast, the ground state of $α$-FeSe is in the…
Weak antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction in the ferromagnetic (FM) partially ordered La2CoMnO6 (LCMO) was detected by Raman spectroscopy by monitoring spin-phonon coupling. Because of the sensibility to probe short-range disorder and lattice modifications, the Raman spectroscopy showed to be an useful tool to indicate less remarkable magnetic transitions in LCMO compound. Apart from the expected spin-phonon coupling due to the long-range FM superexchange (Tc~230 K), phonons parameters pointed out an additional spin-phonon coupling related to the short-range AF interaction at Tc~135 K, which was…
We present temperature-dependent atomic and magnetic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of neutron total scattering measurements of antiferromagnetic MnO, an archetypal strongly correlated transition-metal oxide. The known antiferromagnetic ground-state structure fits the low-temperature data closely with refined parameters that agree with conventional techniques, confirming the reliability of the newly developed magnetic PDF method. The measurements performed in the paramagnetic phase reveal significant short-range magnetic correlations on a $\sim$1~nm length scale that differ substant…
In order to assist the search of new superconductors in iron selenide materials by intercalation, we calculate the crystal and electronic structures of MgOFeSe using the first-principles density functional theory. MgOFeSe is isotructural to the parent compound of iron pnictide superconductor LaOFeAs. In LaOFeAs, the anion O$^{2-}$ is located at the center of each LaO tetrahedra. But for MgOFeSe, we find that the crystal structure with the cation Mg$^{2+}$ as the tetrahedral center in the MgO layer is energetically more stable. The low energy band structures around the Fermi surfaces of MgOFeSe…
Based on first-principles calculations, we discover a two-dimensional layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) electride Gd$_2$O, where anionic excess electrons exist in the interstitial spaces between positively charged cationic layers. It is revealed that each cationic layer composed of three-atom-thick Gd$-$O$-$Gd stacks has in-plane ferromagnetic and out-of-plane AFM superexchange interactions between the localized Gd 4$f$ spins through O 2$p$ orbitals. Furthermore, the interlayer superexchange mediated by the hybridized Gd-5$d$ and interstitial-$s$-like states involves intimate couplings between t…
The coexistence and coupling of magnetic and ferroelectric orderings in single phase multiferroics has evinced enormous scientific interest as it involves breaking of time reversal and space inversion symmetries in the same material. The mutual controllability of the two diverse orderings in multiferroics has potential for developing new generation multifunctional sensor, actuator and data storage devices. We present here evidence for a new exotic facet of multiferroicity, whereby one can raise the strength of antiferromagnetic (AFM) superexchange interaction and hence tune the Néel temperatur…
Based on first-principles density-functional theory calculations, we present a comparative study of the elec- tronic structures of ultranarrow zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) embedded in hexagonal boron nitride (BN) sheet and fully hydrogenated graphene (graphane) as a function of their width N (the number of zigzag C chains composing the ZGNRs). We find that ZGNRs/BN have the nonmagnetic ground state except at N = 5 and 6 with a weakly stabilized half-semimetallic state, whereas ZGNRs/graphane with N >= 2 exhibit a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between ferromagnetically ordered edge s…
Pressure induced phase transitions of MIAgIIF3 perovskites where M = K, Rb, Cs, have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M = K and Rb consists of an orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic transition, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner sharing [AgF6]4 minus octahedra and their mutual approaching via secondary Ag...F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition i.e. tetragonal to triclinic, is predicted for CsAgF3, associated with substantial deformation of the…
Magnetic properties of silver(II) compounds have been of interest in recent years. In covalent compounds, the main mechanism of interaction between paramagnetic sites is the superexchange via the connecting ligand. To date, little is known of magnetic interactions between Ag(II) cations and other paramagnetic centres. It is because only a few compounds bearing Ag(II) cation and other paramagnetic transition metal cation are known experimentally. Recently the high-pressure synthesis of ternary silver(II) fluorides with 3d metal cations AgMF4 (M = Co, Ni, Cu) was predicted to be feasible. Here, …
We derived simple rules for the sign of superexchange interaction based on the multielectron calculations of the superexchange interaction in the transition metal oxides that are valid both below and above spin crossover under high pressure. The superexchange interaction between two cations in d$^n$ configurations is given by a sum of individual contributions related to the electron-hole virtual excitations to the different states of the d$^{n + 1}$ and d$^{n - 1}$ configurations. Using these rules, we have analyzed the sign of the superexchange interaction of a number of oxides with magnetic …
The superexchange theory predicts dominant antiferromagnetic kinetic interaction when the orbitals accommodating magnetic electrons are covalently bonded through diamagnetic bridging atoms/groups. Here we show that explicit consideration of magnetic and (leading) bridging orbitals, together with the electron transfer between the former, reveals a strong ferromagnetic kinetic exchange contribution. First principle calculations show that it is comparable in strength with antiferromagnetic superexchange in a number of magnetic materials with diamagnetic metal bridges. In particular, it is respons…
The ground state of K$_{0.8+x}$Fe$_{1.6+y}$Se$_2$ and other iron-based selenide superconductors are doped antiferromagnetic semiconductors. There are well defined iron local moments whose energies are separated from those of conduction electrons by a large band gap in these materials. We propose that the low energy physics of this system is governed by a model Hamiltonian of interacting electrons with on-site ferromagnetic exchange interactions and inter-site superexchange interactions. We have derived the effective pairing potential of electrons under the linear spin-wave approximation and sh…
The low temperature properties of double exchange model in triangular lattice are investigated via truncated polynomial expansion method (TPEM), which reduces the computational complexity and enables parallel computation. We found that for the half-filling case a stable 120-degree spin configuration phase occurs owing to the frustration of triangular lattice and is further stabilized by antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange interaction, while a transition between a stable ferromagnetic (FM) phase and a unique flux phase with small finite-size effect is induced by AF superexchange interaction fo…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we find that the ground state of ternary iron selenides AFe$_2$Se$_2$ (A=K, Cs, or Tl) is in a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order, in which the Fe local moments ($\sim2.8μ_B$) align ferromagnetically along a diagonal direction and antiferromagnetically along the other diagonal direction on the Fe-Fe square lattice. This bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order results from the interplay among the nearest, the next nearest, and the next next nearest neighbor superexchange interactions, mediated by Se $4p$-orbitals.
We have deployed density functional theory, Wannier function analysis and mean-field calculations to investigate the double-double perovskite compound CaMnCrSbO_{6}. The crystallographically non-equivalent Mn atoms in the unit cell have tetrahedral and planar oxygen coordinations (labelled as Mn(1) and Mn(2)), while the Cr atom is in the centre of distorted oxygen octahedron. While the bulk magnetization and neutron diffraction suggest a simpler ferrimagnetic order (T_C=49 K) between Mn2+ and Cr3+ spins, the exchange interactions are more complex than that expected from a two sublattice magnet…
In numerous diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) systems, the competition takes place between the short-range antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange interactions and the long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling mediated by the charge carriers. Such a situation strongly influences the critical temperature, the maximization of which constitutes a challenging task in DMS physics and technology. The aim of the paper is to discuss theoretically the limiting effect of AF interactions between nearest-neighbour magnetic ions on the stability of inhomogeneous ferromagnetic state in a mode…
We study the existence of incommensurate phases in the phase diagram of the two orbital double exchange model coupled with Jahn-Teller phonons and with superexchange interactions. In agreement with experimental results, we find that undoped manganites $RMnO_3$ ($R$ being some rare earth element) show temperature induced commensurate-incommensurate phase transitions. In the incommensurate phase the magnetic wave vector varies with temperature. The incommensurate phase arises from the competition between the short range antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction and the long range ferromagnetic…
We have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of the ternary iron arsenides AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Ca, or Sr) using the first-principles density functional theory. The ground states of these compounds are in a collinear antiferromagnetic order, resulting from the interplay between the nearest and the next-nearest neighbor superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions bridged by As $4p$ orbitals. The correction from the spin-orbit interaction to the band structure is small. The pressure can reduce dramatically the magnetic moment and diminish the collinear antiferromagnetic order. Based…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we find that the ground state of the Fe-vacancies ordered TlFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional collinear antiferromagnetic semiconductor with an energy gap of 94 meV, in agreement with experimental measurements. This antiferromagnetic order is driven by the Se-bridged antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between Fe moments. Similarly, we find that crystals AFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$ (A=K, Rb, or Cs) are also antiferromagnetic semiconductors but with a zero-gap semiconducting state or semimetallic state nearly degenerated with t…
The Ag ion in the recently synthesized novel material Ag2NiO2 adopts an extremely unusual valency of 1/2, leaving the Ni ion as 3+, rather than the expected 2+. Using first principles calculations, we show that this mysterious subvalent state emerges due to a strong bonding-antibonding interaction between the two Ag layers which drives the lower band beneath the O p complex, eliminating the possibility of a conventional Ag 1+ valence state. The strong renormalization of the specific heat coefficient, gamma, is likely due to strong spin fluctuations that stem from nearly complete compensation o…
The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$ contains folded CuO$_2$ chains with four magnetic copper ions ($S=1/2$) per unit cell. An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate. The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Bo…
The classical Heisenberg model is applied in a Monte Carlo study to investigate the distance dependence of the indirect nearest neighbor (NN) exchange and next-nearest neighbor (NNN) superexchange interaction in EuO, EuS, EuSe and EuTe. For this purpose, first, the dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature, i.e., Curie, respectively, Néel temperature for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering on the exchange constants was determined. This was then employed for the analysis of experimental data of hydrostatic pressure experiments. It is shown that all experimental findings, i.e., th…
We report on measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependence of antiferromagnetic resonances in the prototypical antiferromagnet NiO. The frequencies of the magnetic resonances in the vicinity of 1 THz have been determined in the time-domain via time-resolved Faraday measurements after selective excitation by narrow-band superradiant terahertz (THz) pulses at temperatures down to 3K and in magnetic fields up to 10 T. The measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic resonance modes, which can be distinguished by their characteristic magnetic field dependencies. The nature of the two mode…
By systematic first-principles calculations, we study the electronic structure and magnetic property of SrCrO$_3$. Our results suggest that SrCrO$_3$ is a weakly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) metal, a very rare situation in transition-metal oxides. Among various possible AF states, the C-type spin ordering with small amount of orbital polarization (dxy orbital is more occupied than the d_{yz/zx} orbital) is favored. The detailed mechanism to stabilize the C-type AF state is analyzed based on the competition between the itinerant Stoner instability and superexchange, and our results suggest…
The B-site disorder in the d5 - d3 system of perovskites has been analyzed with molecular field theory and Monte Carlo method. The model is applicable to RFe1-pCrpO3 at any p value. When the saturation magnetization MS and phase transition temperature TP are known, a model can be built to calculate the order or disorder distribution of lattice B-sites. We analyze the case that the Fe-Cr superexchange is antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic coupling respectively. The simulation result shows that the theoretical calculation formula is suitable for the calculation of different B-site distribution.…
In order to explain the absence of hysteresis in ferromagnetic p-type (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells (QWs), spin dynamics was previously investigated by Monte Carlo simulations combining the Metropolis algorithm with the determination of hole eigenfunctions at each Monte Carlo sweep. Short-range antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between Mn spins - which compete with the hole-mediated long-range ferromagnetic coupling - were found to accelerate magnetization dynamics if the the layer containing Mn spins is wider than the vertical range of the hole wave function. Employing this approach it i…
The crystal structure of hexagonal-Sr0.6Ba0.4MnO3 allows various competing superexchange interactions, leading to intriguing magnetic properties. Local structural changes modify overlapping between Mn and oxygen ions with temperature. Calculations based on our model spin-Hamiltonian reveal that the dominant linear antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the oxygen-linked Mn4+ ions results in short range correlations (SRC), manifesting a smooth drop in magnetization below 325K. Dominance of superexchange interaction changes its allegiance towards the non-linear oxygen-linked Mn-O-Mn…
Magnetism in Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga,In,Sn,Sb) Heusler alloys has so far been predominantly attributed to Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida type interactions between Mn atoms. We investigate magnetic interactions in one such alloy, Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ and attempt to explain the origin of antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions that coexist with ferromagnetic ones. Through the combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we find that Ni plays an important role along with Mn in the overall magnetism. A significant hybridization that develops between Mn a…
We study how strain affects orbital ordering and magnetism at the interface between SrMnO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$ from density-functional calculations and interpret the basic results in terms of a three-site Mn-O-Mn model. Magnetic interaction between the Mn atoms is governed by a competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange of the Mn t$_{2g}$ core spins and the ferromagnetic double exchange of the itinerant e$_g$ electrons. While the core electrons are relatively unaffected by the strain, the orbital character of the itinerant electron is strongly affected, which in turn causes a large c…
We present an investigation of charge-compensated antiferromagnetic (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ single crystals using Raman scattering as well as muon spin rotation. In this system the parameter $x$ controls the Cu-O-Cu superexchange interaction via bond distances and buckling angles. The oxygen content $y$ controls the charge doping. In the absence of doping the two-magnon peak position is directly proportional to the superexchange strength $J$. We find that both $x$ and $y$ affect the peak position considerably. The Néel temperature determined from muon sp…
Combining LSDA+$U$ and an analysis of superexchange interactions beyond DFT, we describe the magnetic ground states in rutile and anatase Cr-doped TiO$_2$. In parallel, we correct our LSDA+$U$ ground state through GW corrections ($GW$@LSDA+$U$) that reproduce the position of impurity states and the band gaps in satisfying agreement with experiments. Because of the different topological coordinations of Cr-Cr bonds in the ground states of rutile and anatase, superexchange interactions induce either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings of Cr ions. In Cr-doped anatase, this interaction le…
We have studied the spin and exchange coupling of Ti atoms on a Cu$_2$N/Cu(100) surface using density functional theory. We find that individual Ti have a spin of 1.0 (i.e., 2 Bohr Magneton) on the Cu$_2$N/Cu(100) surface instead of spin-1/2 as found by Scanning Tunneling Microscope. We suggest an explanation for this difference, a two-stage Kondo effect, which can be verified by experiments. By calculating the exchange coupling for Ti dimers on the Cu$_2$N/Cu(100) surface, we find that the exchange coupling across a `void' of 3.6Å is antiferromagnetic, whereas indirect (superexchange) couplin…
The electronic structure and magnetism in the sodium nickelate NaNiO_2 in the low-temperature phase is studied from density-functional calculations using the linear muffin-tin orbitals method. An antiferromagnetic solution with a magnetic moment of 0.7 m_B per Ni ion is found. A ferrodistorsive orbital ordering is shown to occur due to the Jahn-Teller distortion around the Ni^{3+} ion in agreement with the orbital ordering inferred from neutron diffraction. While the intralayer exchange is ferromagnetic, the interlayer exchange is weakly antiferromagnetic, mediated by a long Ni-O-Na-O-Ni super…
Dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are nonmagnetic semiconductors doped with magnetic transition metals. The recently discovered DMS material (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ offers a unique and versatile control of the Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, by decoupling the spin (Mn$^{2+}$, $S=5/2$) and charge (K$^{+}$) doping in different crystallographic layers. In an attempt to describe from first-principles calculations the role of hole doping in stabilizing ferromagnetic order, it was recently suggested that the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling $J$ between the ne…
LiCrO2 is a 2D triangular antiferromagnet, isostructural with the common battery material LiCoO2 and a well-known Jahn-Teller antiferromagnet NaNiO2. As opposed to the latter, LiCrO2 exibits antiferromagnetic exchange in Cr planes, which has been ascribed to direct Cr-Cr d-d overlap. Using LDA and LDA+U first principles calculations I confirm this conjecture and show that (a) direct d-d overlap is indeed enhanced compared to isostructural Ni and Cr compounds, (b) p-d charge transfer gap is also enhanced, thus suppressing the ferromagnetic superexchange, (c) the calculated magnetic Hamiltonian …
We first analyze why the iron pnictides with high $T_c$ superconductivity so far are As-based, by the Hund's rule correlation picture, then examine the P-based and Sb-based cases, respectively. Consequently, we propose that CaClFeP with ZrCuSiAs-type structure is an As-free high $T_c$ iron-pnictide. The subsequent density functional theory calculations show that the ground state of CaClFeP is of a collinearly antiferromagnetic order on Fe moments with structural distortion, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic superexchange interac…
We use synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport under pressure to probe both the magnetism and the structure of single crystal NiS2 across its Mott-Hubbard transition. In the insulator, the low-temperature antiferromagnetic order results from superexchange among correlated electrons and couples to a (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) superlattice distortion. Applying pressure suppresses the insulating state, but enhances the magnetism as the superexchange increases with decreasing lattice constant. By comparing our results under pressure to previous studies of doped crystals we show that this depen…
The parent compound of high-Tc superconducting cuprates is a unique Mott state consisting of layers of spin-1/2 ions arranged on a square lattice and with a record high antiferromagnetic coupling within the layers. Compounds with similar characteristics have long been searched for. Nickelates and iridates had been proposed as cuprate analogs but so far have not reached a satisfactory similarity. Here we use a combination of experimental and theoretical tools to show that the commercial compound AgF2 is an excellent cuprate analog with remarkably similar electronic parameters to La2CuO4 but lar…
With the proposed Hund's rule correlation picture, i.e. the fluctuating Fe local moments with the As-bridged antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions, the exceptional collapsed tetragonal phase and related phase transitions observed in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ are well understood. With the same framework, a pressure-temperature phase diagram is predicted for BaFe$_2$As$_2$ as well, in which a paramagnetic tetragonal and a collinear antiferromagnetic orthorhombic structures to nonmagnetic tetragonal structure transitions take place around 4-8 GPa and 10-15 GPa respectively, and a nonmagnetic tetragon…
Laser-induced ultrafast (fs) magnetization experiments in antiferromagnets have recently attracted large attention, paving the road for inherently fast spin dynamics in the THz regime without invoking stray fields. The technical importance is emphasized by the rising new research field of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, where superexchange-dominated strongly correlated compounds provide an interesting materials playground. An intriguing question is whether the Coulomb interaction may be a key to control AFM order on ultrafast time scales. Therefore, we study (de)magnetization processes in…
An effective Hamiltonian is derived in the case of the strong Hund coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction by means of a projective perturbation approach. A physical mechanism for charge ordering in half-doped manganites (R_{0.5}X_{0.5}MnO_3) is proposed. The virtual process of electron hopping results in antiferromagnetic superexchange and a repulsive interaction, which may drive electrons to form a Wigner lattice. The phase diagram of the ground state of the model is presented at half doping. In the case of formation of Wigner lattice, we prove that spins of electrons are aligned ferromagne…
We report the revised crystal structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of quasi-two dimensional honeycomb-lattice silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data are consistent with the onset of antiferromagnetic long range order at low temperatures with Néel temperature TN ~ 21.2 K. In addition, the magnetization curves revealed a field-induced (spin-flop type) transition below TN in moderate magnetic fields. The GGA+U calculations show the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom, which maintain a hierarchy of exchange interaction in the system.…
It has been recently shown that the double exchange Hamiltonian, with weak antiferromagnetic interactions, has a richer variety of first and second order transitions than previously anticipated, and that such transitions are consistent with the magnetic properties of manganites. Here we present a thorough discussion of the variational Mean Field approach that leads to the these results. We also show that the effect of the Berry phase turns out to be crucial to produce first order Paramagnetic-Ferromagnetic transitions near half filling with transition temperatures compatible with the experimen…
The on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ is the key ingredient for describing the magnetic properties of Mott insulators, leading to a popular believe that many limitations of the density-functional theory based methods can be cured by artificially incorporating such on-site interactions for localized electrons in the model form. The layered antiferromagnet NaMnCl$_3$ reveals quite a different story: while the Coulomb $U$ on the Mn sites controls the strength of antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions, an equally important parameter is the Stoner coupling ${\cal I}_{\rm Cl}$ on the ligand sites.…
