We have studied the spin and exchange coupling of Ti atoms on a Cu$_2$N/Cu(100) surface using density functional theory. We find that individual Ti have a spin of 1.0 (i.e., 2 Bohr Magneton) on the Cu$_2$N/Cu(100) surface instead of spin-1/2 as found by Scanning Tunneling Microscope. We suggest an explanation for this difference, a two-stage Kondo effect, which can be verified by experiments. By calculating the exchange coupling for Ti dimers on the Cu$_2$N/Cu(100) surface, we find that the exchange coupling across a `void' of 3.6Å is antiferromagnetic, whereas indirect (superexchange) coupling through a N atom is ferromagnetic. We confirm the existence of superexchange interactions by varying the Ti-N angle in a model trimer calculation. For a square lattice of Ti on Cu$_2$N/Cu(100), we find a novel spin striped phase.
We investigate the effect of coupling (intensity and nature), applied field, and anisotropy on the spin dynamics of a multi-layer system composed of a hard magnetic slab coupled to a soft magnetic slab through a nonmagnetic spacer. The soft slab is modeled as a stack of several atomic layers while the hard layer, of a different material, is either considered as a pinned macroscopic magnetic moment or as an atomic multi-layer system. We compute the magnetization profile and hysteresis loop of the multi-layer system by solving the Landau-Lifshitz equations for the net magnetic moment of each (at…
We derived the analytical forms of refractive index and Snell law for dipolar-exchange spin waves of reflection and refraction at a magnetically heterogeneous interface in a geometrically confined planer structure composed of different magnetic thin films from a microscopic scattering approach. A novel behavior, the optical total reflection, was demonstrated for spin waves with a specific interface between Yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12) and Permalloy (Ni80Fe20), by analytical and micromagnetic numerical calculations.
The effect of dipolar and exchange interactions within pairs of paramagnetic electronic states on Pauli-blockade-controlled spin-dependent transport and recombination rates during magnetic resonant spin excitation is studied numerically using the superoperator Liouville-space formalism. The simulations reveal that spin-Rabi nutation induced by magnetic resonance can control transition rates which can be observed experimentally by pulsed electrically (pEDMR) and pulsed optically (pODMR) detected magnetic resonance spectroscopies. When the dipolar coupling exceeds the difference of the pair part…
We explore the equilibrium properties of a two-dimensional Ising spin model with short-range exchange and long-range dipolar interactions as a function of the applied magnetic field H. The model is studied through extensive Monte Carlo simulations that show the existence of many modulated phases with long range orientational order for a wide range of fields. These phases are characterized by different wave vectors that change discontinuously with the magnetic field. We provide numerical evidence supporting the existence of first order transitions between these phases. At higher fields our resu…
We study theoretically the spectrum, F(s), of spin-dependent transition rates within dipolar D and exchange J coupled pairs of two spins with S=1/2 undergoing Rabi oscillations due to a coherent magnetic resonant excitation. We show that the Rabi oscillation controlled rates exhibit a spectrum with three frequency components. When exchange is stronger than the Rabi frequency (J>>Ω_R), the frequency components of the Rabi oscillation do not depend on J, rather they are determined by the relation between Ω_R and D. We derive analytical expressions for the frequencies and the intensities of all t…
Long range dipole-dipole correlation in a ferromagnetic sample can be treated in terms of collective excitations of the system as a whole. Ferrite samples with linear dimensions smaller than the dephasing length, but still much larger than the exchange-interaction scales are mesoscopic structures. Recently, it was shown that mesoscopic quasi-2D ferrite disks, distinguishing by multiresonance magneto-dipolar-mode (MDM) spectra, demonstrate unique properties of artificial atomic structures: energy eigenstates, eigen power-flow vortices and eigen helicity parameters. Because of these properties, …
We investigate the dynamics of a magnetic system consisting of two magnetic moments coupled by either exchange, dipole-dipole, or Dzyalozhinski-Moriya interaction. We compare the switching mechanisms and switching rates as induced by the three couplings. For each coupling and each configuration of the two anisotropy axes, we describe the switching modes and, using the kinetic theory of Langer, we provide (semi-)analytical expressions for the switching rate. We then compare the three interactions with regard to their efficiency in the reversal of the net magnetic moment of the dimer. We also in…
In this paper we show that the vortex states can be created not only in magnetically soft "small" (with the dipolar and exchange energy competition) cylindrical dots, but also in magnetically saturated "big" (when the exchange is neglected) cylindrical dots. A property associated with a vortex structure becomes evident from an analysis of confinement phenomena of magnetic oscillations in a ferrite disk with a dominating role of magnetic-dipolar (non-exchange-interaction) spectra. In this case the scalar (magnetostatic-potential) wave functions may have a phase singularity in a center of a dot.…
The results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations of classical spins on the two-dimensional kagome lattice with only dipolar interactions are presented. In addition to revealing the six-fold degenerate ground state, the nature of the finite-temperature phase transition to long-range magnetic order is discussed. Low temperature states consisting of mixtures of degenerate ground state configurations separated by domain walls can be explained as a result of competing exchange-like and shape anisotropy-like terms in the dipolar coupling. Fluctuations between pairs of degenerate spin configurations …
We report the results of a set of simulations of small arrays of submicron ferromagnetic particles. The actions of dipolar and exchange interactions were qualitatively investigated by analysing the ferromagnetic resonance spectra at 9.37 GHz resulting from the magnetization response of con- nected and unconnected particles in the array as a function of the applied dc magnetic field. We find that the magnetization precession movement (at resonance) observed in individual particles in the array presents a distinctive behaviour (an amplitude mismatch) in comparison to isolated, one-particle refer…
We discuss the feasibility of the embedded cluster approach for it ab-initio calculations of charge exchange between ions and a LiF surface. We show that the discrete density of valence states in embedded clusters converges towards the continuum limit of the density of states in the valence band of an infinitely extended LiF surface. Screening of the holes that are left in the surface after electron transfer to the projectile plays an important role for the correct level ordering in the calculation of potential energy surfaces. We discuss to which extent the hole screening is taken into accoun…
Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy to study magnetization in epitaxial layered systems, we found that the area vs perimeter relationship of magnetic domains in the top Fe layers of Fe/NiO/Fe(100) structures follows a power-law distribution, with very small magnetic domain cutoff radius (about 40 nm) and domain wall thickness. This unusual magnetic microstructure can be understood as resulting from the competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions at the Fe/NiO interfaces, rather than from mechanisms involving the anisotropy and dipolar forces th…
We combine the anisotropy of magnetic interactions and the point symmetry of finite solids in the study of dipolar clusters as new basic units for multiferroics metamaterials. The hamiltonian of magnetic dipoles with an easy axis at the vertices of polygons and polyhedra, maps exactly into a hamiltonian with symmetric and antisymmetric exchange couplings. The last one gives rise to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contribution responsible for the magnetic modes of the systems and their symmetry groups, which coincide with those of a particle in a crystal field with spin-orbit interaction. We find that …
We calculate the magnetization hysteresis for an ordered array of composite magnetic nanoparticles with a ferromagnetic (FM) core and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) shell, located on a triangular lattice and coupled via magnetostatic forces. Each nanoparticle is described by a pair of exchange-coupled (J), anisotropic spins (Meiklejohn-Bean model). The magnetization hysteresis loop is obtained using the Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm. For magnetically hard nanoparticles we find that the coercivity is reduced with increasing the dipolar coupling strength, while the exchange bias field shows an no…
We study spin wave excitations in a three-dimensional nanocomposite magnet of exchange coupled hard (SmCo$_5$) and soft (FeCo) phases. The dipolar interaction splits the spin wave energies into the upper and lower branches of the spin wave manifold. When the amount of the soft phase is increased the energy of low-lying spin excitations is considerably softened due to two reasons: (i) the low- lying mode locked into the soft phase region with a spin wave gap at ${\bf k}= 0$ which scales approximately proportional to the anisotropy constant of the soft phase and (ii) the internal dipolar field w…
An analytical model of the spin-diode effect induced by resonant spin-transfer torque in a ferromagnetic bilayer with strong dipolar coupling provides the resonance frequencies and the lineshapes of the magnetic field spectra obtained under field or laser-light modulation. The effect of laser irradiation is accounted for by introducing the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization and anisotropy, as well as thermal spin-transfer torques. The predictions of the model are compared with experimental data obtained with single Co/Cu/Co spin valves, embedded in nanowires and produced by…
An accurate description of the two-electron density, crucial for magnetic coupling in spin systems, provides in general a major challenge for density functional theory calculations. It affects, e.g., the calculated zero-field splitting (ZFS) energies of spin qubits in semiconductors that frequently deviate significantly from experiment. In the present work (i) we propose an efficient and robust strategy to correct for spin contamination in both extended periodic and finite-size systems, (ii) verify its accuracy using model high-spin molecules, and finally (iii) apply the methodology to calcula…
A model for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice with exchange and dipole-dipole interactions is studied via mean-field theory. In treating the dipoles by use of the Ewald method, a soft (critical) mode with a unique ordering wave vector is selected for all strengths of the dipole-dipole coupling. For weak dipoles a partially ordered, three sublattice spin structure (P state), with q_{ord}= (1/2 1/2 1/2), is selected. A fully ordered, four sublattice spin structure (F state), with q = (000), competes with the P state and becomes the stable structure as the temperature is reduce…
A microscopic model is employed to calculate the spectrum of spin waves in quasiperiodic magnetic multilayers in the dipole-exchange regime. Results are presented for structures in which thin ferromagnetic films are separated by non-magnetic spacers following a Fibonacci sequence and extend previous magnetostatic calculations. The results show the splitting of the frequency bands and the mode mixing caused by the dipolar interaction between the films as a function of spacer thickness, as well as the fractal aspect of the spectrum induced by the non-periodic aspect of the structure.
We investigate spin correlations in the dipolar Heisenberg antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7 using polarised neutron-scattering measurements in the correlated paramagnetic regime. Using Monte Carlo methods, we show that our data are sensitive to weak further-neighbour exchange interactions of magnitude ~0.5% of the nearest-neighbour interaction, and are compatible with either antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour interactions, or ferromagnetic third-neighbour interactions that connect spins across hexagonal loops. Calculations of the magnetic scattering intensity reveal rods of diffuse scattering al…
The magnetic pyrochlore oxide materials of general chemical formula R2Ti2O7 and R2Sn2O7 (R = rare earth) display a host of interesting physical behaviours depending on the flavour of rare earth ion. These properties depend on the value of the total magnetic moment, the crystal field interactions at each rare earth site and the complex interplay between magnetic exchange and long-range dipole-dipole interactions. This work focuses on the low temperature physics of the dipolar isotropic frustrated antiferromagnetic pyrochlore materials. Candidate magnetic ground states are numerically determined…
