We have deployed density functional theory, Wannier function analysis and mean-field calculations to investigate the double-double perovskite compound CaMnCrSbO_{6}. The crystallographically non-equivalent Mn atoms in the unit cell have tetrahedral and planar oxygen coordinations (labelled as Mn(1) and Mn(2)), while the Cr atom is in the centre of distorted oxygen octahedron. While the bulk magnetization and neutron diffraction suggest a simpler ferrimagnetic order (T_C=49 K) between Mn2+ and Cr3+ spins, the exchange interactions are more complex than that expected from a two sublattice magnetic system. The electronic structure calculations yield a ferrimagnetic insulating ground state even in absence of Hubbard U which persists for a wide range of U. The Mn(1)-O-Mn(2) (out of plane and in-plane), Mn(1)-O-Cr and Mn(2)-O-Cr superexchange interactions are found to be anti-ferromagnetic, while the Cr-O-O-Cr super-superexchange is found to be ferromagnetic. The Mn(2)-O-Cr superexchange is weaker than the Mn(1)-O-Cr superexchange, thus effectively resulting in ferrimagnetism. From a simple 3-site Hubbard model, we derived expressions for the antiferromagnetic superexchange strength J_AFM and the weaker ferromagnetic J_FM. The relative strengths of JAFM for the various superexchange interactions are in agreement with those obtained from DFT. The expression for Cr-O-O-Cr super-superexchange strength (J_SS), which is derived considering a 4-site Hubbard model, predicts a ferromagnetic exchange in agreement with DFT. Finally, our mean field calculations reveal that assuming a set of four magnetic sub-lattice for Mn2+ spins and a single magnetic sublattice for Cr3+ spins yields a much improved T_C, while a simple two magnetic sublattice model yields a much higher T_C.
Pressure induced phase transitions of MIAgIIF3 perovskites where M = K, Rb, Cs, have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M = K and Rb consists of an orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic transition, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner sharing [AgF6]4 minus octahedra and their mutual approaching via secondary Ag...F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition i.e. tetragonal to triclinic, is predicted for CsAgF3, associated with substantial deformation of the…
The origin of the spiral spin-order in perovskite multiferroic manganites $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($RE=$ Tb or Dy) is here investigated using a two $e_{\rm g}$-orbitals double-exchange model. Our main result is that the experimentally observed spiral phase can be stabilized by introducing a relatively weak next-nearest-neighbor superexchange coupling ($\sim10%$ of the nearest-neighbor superexchange). Moreover, the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion is also shown to be essential to obtain a realistic spiral period. Supporting our conclusions, the generic phase diagram of undoped perovskite manganites is obtai…
The B-site disorder in the d5 - d3 system of perovskites has been analyzed with molecular field theory and Monte Carlo method. The model is applicable to RFe1-pCrpO3 at any p value. When the saturation magnetization MS and phase transition temperature TP are known, a model can be built to calculate the order or disorder distribution of lattice B-sites. We analyze the case that the Fe-Cr superexchange is antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic coupling respectively. The simulation result shows that the theoretical calculation formula is suitable for the calculation of different B-site distribution.…
With the perovskite multiferroic RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy) as guidance, we argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provides the microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and incommensurate magnetism. We use Monte-Carlo simulations and zero temperature exact calculations to study a model incorporating the double-exchange, superexchange, Jahn-Teller and DMI terms. The phase diagram contains a multiferroic phase between A and E antiferromagnetic phases, in excellent agreement with experiments.
Understanding magnetism in multiple magnetic sublattice system, driven by the interplay of varied nature of magnetic exchanges, is on one hand challenging and on other hand intriguing. Motivated by the recent synthesis of AA'BB'O_6 double double perovskites with multiple magnetic ions both at A- and B-sites, we investigate the mechanism of magnetic behavior in these interesting class of compounds. We find that the magnetism in such multiple sublattice compounds is governed by the interplay and delicate balance between two distinct mechanisms, a) kinetic energy-driven multiple sublattice double…
In this proceeding, recent theoretical investigations by the authors on the multiferroic $R$MnO$_3$ perovskites are briefly reviewed at first. Using the double-exchange model, the realistic spiral spin order in undoped manganites such as TbMnO$_3$ and DyMnO$_3$ is well reproduced by incorporating a weak next-nearest neighbor superexchange ($\sim10%$ of nearest neighbor superexchange) and moderate Jahn-Teller distortion. The phase transitions from the A-type antiferromagnet (as in LaMnO$_3$), to the spiral phase (as in TbMnO$_3$), and finally to the E-type antiferromagnet (as in HoMnO$_3$), wit…
Spin reorientation and magnetisation reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic provskites ($RM$O$_{3}$'s) that have attracted a lot of attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using density functional theory and classical atomistic spin dynamics we build a general Heisenberg magnetic model that allows to explore the whole phase diagram of the chromite and ferrite compounds and to scrutinize the microscopic mechanism responsible for spin reorientations and magnetisation reversals. We show that the occurrence of a magnetization rever…
Weak antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction in the ferromagnetic (FM) partially ordered La2CoMnO6 (LCMO) was detected by Raman spectroscopy by monitoring spin-phonon coupling. Because of the sensibility to probe short-range disorder and lattice modifications, the Raman spectroscopy showed to be an useful tool to indicate less remarkable magnetic transitions in LCMO compound. Apart from the expected spin-phonon coupling due to the long-range FM superexchange (Tc~230 K), phonons parameters pointed out an additional spin-phonon coupling related to the short-range AF interaction at Tc~135 K, which was…
The magnetic properties of GdBaMn_{2}O_{5.0}, which exhibits charge ordering, are studied from 2 to 400 K using single crystals. In a small magnetic field applied along the easy axis, the magnetization M shows a temperature-induced reversal which is sometimes found in ferrimagnets. In a large magnetic field, on the other hand, a sharp change in the slope of M(T) coming from an unusual turnabout of the magnetization of the Mn sublattices is observed. Those observations are essentially explained by a molecular field theory which highlights the role of delicate magnetic interactions between Gd^{3…
Local configurational disorder can have a dominating role in the formation of macroscopic functional responses in strongly correlated materials. Here, we use entropy-stabilization synthesis to create single crystal epitaxial ABO3 perovskite thin films with equal atomic concentration of 3d transition metal cations on the B-site sublattice. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy of La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 (L5BO) films demonstrate excellent crystallinity, smooth film surfaces, and uniform mixing of the 3d transition metal cations througho…
Double perovskites Sr2FeOsO6 and Ca2FeOsO6 show puzzling magnetic properties, the former a low-temperature antiferromagnet while the later a high-temperature insulating ferrimagnet. Here, in order to understand the underlying mechanism, we have investigated the frustrated magnetism of A2FeOsO6 by employing density functional theory and maximally-localized Wannier functions. We find that lattice distortion enhances the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighboring Fe-O-Os interaction but weakens the antiferromagnetic interactions through the Os-O-O-Os and Fe-O-Os-O-Fe paths, which is responsible for th…
We report a comprehensive investigation of Ln2NiIrO6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) using thermodynamic and transport properties, neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the role of A-site cations on the magnetic interactions in this family of hybrid 3d-5d-4f compositions. Magnetic structure determination using neutron diffraction reveals antiferromagnetism for La2NiIrO6, a collinear ferrimagnetic Ni/Ir state that is driven to long range antiferromagnetism upon the onset of Nd ordering in Nd2NiIrO6, and a non-collinear…
We extend the model of ferromagnetic superexchange in dilute magnetic semiconductors to the ferromagnetically ordered highly insulating compounds (dilute magnetic dielectrics). The intrinsic ferromagnetism without free carriers is observed in oxygen-deficient films of anatase TiO_2 doped with transition metal impurities in cation sublattice. We suppose that ferromagnetic order arises due to superexchange between complexes [oxygen vacancies + magnetic impurities], which are stabilized by charge transfer from vacancies to impurities. The Hund rule controls the superexchange via empty vacancy rel…
New double perovskites LaPbMSbO6, where M2+ = Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+, were synthesized as polycrystals by an aqueous synthetic route at temperatures below 1000 oC. All samples are monoclinic, space group P21/n, as obtained from Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The distribution of M2+ and Sb5+ among the two octahedral sites have 3% of disorder for M2+ = Ni2+, whereas for M2+ = Mn2+ and Co2+ less disorder is found. The three samples have an antiferromagnetic transition, due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between M2+ through super-superexchange paths M2+ - O2- - Sb5+ - O2-…
An isotropic half-metallic double exchange magnet with a direct superexchange coupling between the localized spins is studied within the spin-wave (1/S) expansion. The momentum dependence of the spin wave spectrum (including quantum corrections) in the ferromagnetic phase at T=0 is investigated. Based on the calculated spin wave spectrum of the canted state, it is shown that as long as the external magnetic field is not too strong, the double exchange -- superexchange competition does not result in a stabilization of a two-sublattice canted spin ordering.
Taking into account Goodenough's superexchange rules, including both full structural relaxation and spin-orbit coupling, and checking strong correlation effects, we look for compensated half metals within the class of oxide double perovskites materials. Identifying likely half metallic (or half semimetallic) antiferromagnets, the full complications including orbital magnetism are included in order to arrive at realistic predictions of designed magnetic compounds with (near) vanishing net moment. After sorting through several candidates that have not been considered previously, two materials, K…
Organic-inorganic perovskites have shown great promise towards their application in optoelectronics. The success of this class of material is dictated by the complex interplay between various underlying microscopic phenomena. The structural dynamics of organic cations and the inorganic sublattice after photoexcitation is hypothesized to have a direct effect on the material properties, thereby affecting the overall device performance. Here, we use two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy to reveal impulsively excited vibrational modes of methylammonium (MA) lead iodide perovskite, which dri…
B-site ordered A$_2$B'B''O$_6$ double perovskites have a variety of applications as magnetic materials. Here we show that diamagnetic $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ B'' cations have a significant effect on the magnetic interactions in these materials. We present a neutron scattering and theoretical study of the Mn$^{2+}$ double perovskite Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ with a $4d^{10}$ Te$^{6+}$ cation on the B''-site. It is found to be a Type I antiferromagnet with a dominant nearest-neighbor $J_1$ interaction. In contrast, the $5d^0$ W$^{6+}$ analogue Ba$_2$MnWO$_6$ is a Type II antiferromagnet with a significant next…
Lead-free double perovskite materials (viz. Cs$_2$AgInCl$_6$) are being explored as stable and non-toxic alternatives of lead halide perovskites. In order to expand the optical response of Cs$_2$AgInCl$_6$ in visible region, we report here the stability, electronic structure and optical properties of Cs$_2$AgInCl$_6$ by sublattice mixing of various elements. Here, we have employed %high-throughput screening using a hierarchical first-principles based approach starting from density functional theory (DFT) with appropriate exchange-correlation functionals to beyond DFT methods under the framewor…
In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that th…
Anti-site disordering in Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites (containing Mo atoms at Fe positions, and viceversa) has recently been shown to have a dramatic influence in their magnetic and magnetotransport properties. In the present study, two polycrystalline Sr2FeMoO6 samples showing different degrees of anti-site disorder (a nominally 'ordered' sample with 70% of cationic ordering and a nominally 'disordered' sample with 18% of cationic ordering) have been examined by magnetic measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) techniques in the 15-500K temperature range. Our main finding is that the…
Establishing the physical mechanism governing exchange interactions is fundamental for exploring exotic phases such as the quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in real materials. In this work, we address exchange interactions in Sr2CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O, a series of double perovskites that realize the spin-1/2 square lattice and were suggested to harbor a QSL ground state arising from random distribution of non-magnetic ions. Our {\it ab initio} multi-reference configuration interaction calculations show that replacing Te atoms with W atoms changes the dominant couplings from nearest to next-nearest nei…
Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e. concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte-Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as …
The properties of Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom are described by spin-orbital superexchange models, which provide a theoretical framework for understanding their magnetic and optical properties. We introduce such a model derived for $(xy)^1(yz/zx)^1$ configuration of V$^{3+}$ ions in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites, $R$=Lu,Yb,$\cdots$,La, and demonstrate that $\{yz,zx\}$ orbital fluctuations along the $c$ axis are responsible for the huge magnetic and optical anisotropies observed in the almost perfectly cubic compound LaVO$_3$. We argue that the GdFeO$_3$ distortion and the large …
The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$ contains folded CuO$_2$ chains with four magnetic copper ions ($S=1/2$) per unit cell. An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate. The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Bo…
We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe three-dimensional perovskite (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$) manganites and study the magnetic and orbital order on $4\times 4\times 4$ cluster using correlated wave functions. The model includes the kinetic energy, and on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons, antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between $S=3/2$ core spins, and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller modes. The model reproduces the experimentally observed magnetic order: ($i$) $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase …
Layered perovskites Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are regarded as the key materials for understanding the properties of magnetic relativistic insulators, mediated by the strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling. One of the most fundamental issues is to which extent these properties can be described by the superexchange (SE) model, formulated in the limit of the large Coulomb repulsion. In the present work we address this issue by deriving the relevant models and extracting parameters of these models from the first-principles calculations. First, we construct the effective Hubbard-type model for the t2g bands, by…
Several puzzling aspects of interplay of the experimental lattice distortion and the the magnetic properties of four narrow $t_{2g}$-band perovskite oxides (YTiO$_3$, LaTiO$_3$, YVO$_3$, and LaVO$_3$) are clarified using results of first-principles electronic structure calculations. First, we derive parameters of the effective Hubbard-type Hamiltonian for the isolated $t_{2g}$ bands using newly developed downfolding method for the kinetic-energy part and a hybrid approach, based on the combination of the random-phase approximation and the constraint local-density approximation, for the screene…
The lead-free double perovskite material (viz. Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$) has emerged as an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to lead halide perovskites. To make Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$ optically active in the visible region of solar spectrum, band gap engineering approach has been undertaken. Using Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$ as a host, band gap and optical properties of Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$ have been modulated by alloying with M(I), M(II), and M(III) cations at Ag-/Bi-sites. Here, we have employed density functional theory (DFT) with suitable exchange-correlation functionals in light of spin-orbit couplin…
We have studied the magnetic properties and spin-dynamics of the structurally-ordered double perovskite Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Our neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and ac-susceptibility measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases on cooling from room temperature down to 2 K. In the first AFM phase, with transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}=108$ K, cobalt (3$d^7$, $S=3/2$) and osmium (5$d^2$, $S=1$) moments fluctuate dynamically, while their \textit{average} effective moments undergo long-range order. In the second AFM phase with $T_{\mathrm{N}}=67$ K, cobalt moments first becom…
Frustrated lanthanide oxides with dense magnetic lattices are of fundamental interest for their potential in cryogenic refrigeration due to a large ground state entropy and suppressed ordering temperatures, but can often be limited by short-range correlations. Here, we present examples of frustrated fcc oxides, Ba$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and Sr$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and the new site-disordered analog Ca$_2$GdSbO$_6$ ([CaGd]$_A$[CaSb]$_B$O$_6$), in which the magnetocaloric effect is influenced by minimal superexchange ($J_1 \sim 10$ mK). We report on the crystal structures using powder x-ray diffraction and the bu…
Two perovskite-derived materials, CaCu3Mn4O12 and CaCu3Ti4O12, have drawn much recent interest due to their magnetoresistive, dielectric, and magnetoelectronic characteristics. Here we present initial theoretical insights into each of these points, based on first principles, density functional based calculations. Our results predict CCMO to have a spin-asymmetric energy gap, which leads to distinct temperature- and magnetic field-dependent changes in properties, and helps to account for its observed negative magnetoresistivity. We have studied CCTO primarily to gain insight into the exchange c…
The low-temperature properties of the so-called ''charge ordered'' state in 50% doped perovskite manganites are described from the viewpoint of the magnetic spin ordering. In these systems, the zigzag antiferromagnetic ordering, combined with the double-exchange physics, effectively divides the whole sample into the one-dimensional ferromagnetic zigzag chains and results in the anisotropy of electronic properties. The electronic structure of one such chain is described by an effective 3$\times$3 Hamiltonian in the basis of Mn($3de_g$) orbitals. We treat this problem analytically and consider t…
Hybrid transition metal oxides continue to attract attention due to their multiple degrees of freedom ($e.g.$, lattice, charge, spin, and orbital) and versatile properties. Here we investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the newly synthesized double perovskite Ba$_2$NiIrO$_6$, using crystal field theory, superexchange model analysis, density functional calculations, and parallel tempering Monte Carlo (PTMC) simulations. Our results indicate that Ba$_2$NiIrO$_6$ has the Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_{2g}^{6}e_{g}^{2}$)-Ir$^{6+}$ ($t_{2g}^{3}$) charge states. The first nearest-neighboring (1NN) Ni…
The recently synthesized first 4d transition-metal oxide-hydride LaSr3NiRuO4H4 with the unusual high H:O ratio surprisingly displays no magnetic order down to 1.8 K. This is in sharp contrast to the similar unusual low-valent Ni+ - Ru2+ layered oxide LaSrNiRuO4 which has a rather high ferromagnetic (FM) ordering Curie temperature TC about 250 K. In this work, using density functional calculations with aid of crystal field level diagrams and superexchange pictures, we find that the contrasting magnetism is due to the distinct spin-orbital states of the Ru2+ ions (in addition to the common Ni+ S…
The magnetic ground state in the double perovskite system Sr2-xCaxCoOsO6 changes from an antiferromagnet (x = 0), to a spin glass (x = 1), to a ferrimagnet (x = 2) as the Ca content increases. This crossover is driven by chemical pressure effects that control the relative strength of magnetic exchange interactions. The synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetism of SrCaCoOsO6 and Ca2CoOsO6 are investigated and compared with Sr2CoOsO6. Both compounds adopt a monoclinic crystal structure with rock salt ordering of Co2+ and Os6+ and a-a-b+ octahedral tilting, but the average Co-O-Os bond angle ev…
Hybrid perovskites have been at the forefront of condensed matter research particularly in context of device applications primarily in relation to applications in the field of solar cells. In this article, we demonstrate that several new functionalities may be added to the arsenal of hybrid perovskites, in terms of external stimuli driven spin transitions as well as piezochromism. As an example, we study Dimethylammonium Manganese Formate (DMAMnF), a hybrid perovskite investigated quite extensively experimentally. We show by employing first principles DFT+U calculations with the aid of ab init…
We study how strain affects orbital ordering and magnetism at the interface between SrMnO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$ from density-functional calculations and interpret the basic results in terms of a three-site Mn-O-Mn model. Magnetic interaction between the Mn atoms is governed by a competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange of the Mn t$_{2g}$ core spins and the ferromagnetic double exchange of the itinerant e$_g$ electrons. While the core electrons are relatively unaffected by the strain, the orbital character of the itinerant electron is strongly affected, which in turn causes a large c…
We have investigated low energy nuclear spin excitations in double perovskite compounds R$_2$CoMnO$_6$ (R = Y,Tb) by inelastic neutron scattering with a high-resolution back-scattering spectrometer. We observed inelastic signals at about 2.1 $μ$eV for Y$_2$CoMnO$_6$ and also for Tb$_2$CoMnO$_6$ at T = 2 K in both energy loss and energy gain sides. We interpret these inelastic peaks to be due to the transitions between the hyperfine split nuclear levels of $^{59}$Co nucleus. The inelastic peaks move towards the central elastic peak and finally merge with it at the magnetic ordering temperature …
Double perovskite Bi$_2$FeCrO$_6$, related with BiFeO$_3$, is very interesting because strong ferroelectricity and high magnetic Curie temperature beyond room temperature are observed in it. However, existing density-functional-theory (DFT) studies, using pseudo-potentials, produce metallic ground state under the local density approximation (LDA) and need LDA+U method to yield needed nonmetallic ground state, resulting in low magnetic Curie temperature (below 130 K). Here, we optimize its crystal structure and then investigate its electronic structure and magnetic and optical properties by com…
Effect of hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field on electrical resistance of the Kondo-like perovskite manganese oxide, La$_{0.1}$Ce$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ with a ferrimagnetic ground state, have been investigated up to 2.1 GPa and 9 T. In this compound, the Mn-moments undergo double exchange mediated ferromagnetic ordering at $T_{\rm C}$ $\sim$ 280 K and there is a resistance maximum, $T_{\rm max}$ at about 130 K which is correlated with an antiferromagnetic ordering of {\it cerium} with respect to the Mn-sublattice moments. Under pressure, the $T_{\rm max}$ shifts to lower temperature at …
We report on the preparation and characterization of epitaxial thin films of the double-perovskite Sr$_2$CrWO$_6$ by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). On substrates with low lattice mismatch like SrTiO$_3$, epitaxial Sr$_2$CrWO$_6$ films with high crystalline quality can be grown in a molecular layer-by-layer growth mode. Due to the similar ionic radii of Cr and W, these elements show no sublattice order. Nevertheless, the measured Curie temperature is well above 400 K. Due to the reducing growth atmosphere required for double perovskites, the SrTiO$_3$ substrate surface undergoes an insulator-me…
The phase diagram of quarter-hole-doped perovskite manganites is investigated using the doubleexchange model. An exotic striped type-II multiferroic phase, where 25% of the nearest-neighbor spin couplings are orthogonal to each other, is found in the narrow-bandwidth region. Comparing with the spiral-spin ordering phase of undoped manganites, the multiferroic Curie temperature of the new phase is estimated to be ~4 times higher, while the ferroelectric polarization is similar in magnitude. Our study provides a path for noncollinear spin multiferroics based on electronic self-organization, diff…
Spin reorientation transitions and other related magnetic phenomena, which owe their origin to the complex interplay between multiple magnetic sublattices, have long attracted scientific attention both from the perspective of fundamental curiosity and technological applications. In this study, combining first principles calculations together with finite temperature Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the possible origins of reorientation transition of Cr spins in NdCrO$_3$. We construct a NdCrO$_3$ specific magnetic model, consisting of symmetric superexchange interactions between magnetic ion…
In this work, we report the synthesis and investigation of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$(Co$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$)IrO$_6$. Our polycrystalline sample forms as a single-phase double perovskite in monoclinic $P2_{1}/n$ space group. Co and Ir are most likely in bivalent and tetravalent oxidation states, respectively, while Mossbauer spectroscopy indicates that Fe is in a trivalent state. The ac and dc magnetization data suggest a ferrimagnetic behavior resulting from the presence of two antiferromagnetic sublattices at Co/Fe and Ir sites. The large coercive f…
We use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the interplay between oxygen vacancies, A-site cation size / tolerance factor, epitaxial strain, ferroelectricity and magnetism in the perovskite manganite series, AMnO3 (A=Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+). We find that, as expected, increasing the volume through either chemical pressure or tensile strain generally lowers the formation energy of neutral oxygen vacancies consistent with their established tendency to expand the lattice. Increased volume also favors polar distortions, both because competing rotations of the o…
Rare earth based cobalt-ruthenium double perovskites A$_2$CoRuO$_6$ (A = La, Pr, Nd and Sm) were synthesized and investigated for their structural and magnetic properties. All the compounds crystallize in the monoclinic $P2_1/n$ structure with the indication of antisite disorder between Co and Ru sites. While, La compound is already reported to have an antiferromagnetic state below 27 K, the Pr, Nd and Sm systems are found to be ferrimagnetic below $T_c$ = 46, 55 and 78 K respectively. Field dependent magnetization data indicate prominent hysteresis loop below $T_c$ in the samples containing m…
