In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling.
We successfully dope the magnetically silent double perovskite semiconductor Sr2GaSbO6 to induce ferromagnetism and tune its band gap, with Ga3+ partially substituted by the magnetic trivalent cation Mn3+, in a rigid cation ordering with Sb5+. Our new ferromagnetic semiconducting Sr2Ga1-xMnxSbO6 double perovskite, which crystallizes in tetragonal symmetry (space group I4/m) and has tunable ferromagnetic ordering temperature and band gap, suggests that magnetic ion doping of double perovskites is a productive avenue towards obtaining materials for application in next-generation oxide-based spin…
Advances in opto-electronics require the development of materials with novel and engineered characteristics. A class of materials that has garnered tremendous interest is metal-halide perovskites, stimulated by meteoric increases in photovoltaic efficiencies of perovskite solar cells. In addition, recent advances have applied perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) in light-emitting devices. It was discovered recently that, for cesium lead-halide perovskite NCs, their unusually efficient light-emission may be due to a unique excitonic fine-structure composed of three bright triplet states that minimally…
We use computational and experimental methods to study d0 ferromagnetism at a charge- imbalanced interface between two perovskites. In SrTiO3/KTaO3 superlattice calculations, the charge imbalance introduces holes in the SrTiO3 layer, inducing a d0 ferromagnetic half-metallic 2D electron gas at the interface oxygen 2p orbitals. The charge imbalance overrides doping by vacancies at realistic concentrations. Varying the constituent materials shows ferromagnetism to be a gen- eral property of hole-type d0 perovskite interfaces. Atomically sharp epitaxial d0 SrTiO3/KTaO3, SrTiO3 /KNbO3 and SrTiO3 /…
Ferromagnetic insulators (FMIs) are one of the most important components in developing dissipationless electronic and spintronic devices. However, since ferromagnetism generally accompanies metallicity, FMIs are innately rare to find in nature. Here, novel room-temperature FMI films are epitaxially synthesized by deliberate control of the ratio of two B-site cations in the double perovskite Sr2FeReO6. In contrast to the known ferromagnetic metallic phase in stoichiometric Sr2FeReO6, a FMI state with a high Curie temperature (Tc~400 K) and a large saturation magnetization (MS~1.8 μB/f.u.) is fo…
Thin films of perovskite oxides offer the possibility of combining emerging concepts of strongly correlated electron phenomena and spin current in magnetic devices. However, spin transport and magnetization dynamics in these complex oxide materials are not well understood. Here, we experimentally quantify spin transport parameters and magnetization damping in epitaxial perovskite ferromagnet/paramagnet bilayers of La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$ (LSMO/SRO) by broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. From the SRO thickness dependence of Gilbert damping, we estimate a short spin dif…
The use of antisolvents during the fabrication of solution-processed lead halide perovskite layers is increasingly common. Usually, the antisolvent is applied by pipetting during the spin-coating process, which often irreversibly alters the composition of the perovskite layer, resulting in the formation of PbI2 at the surface and bulk of the perovskite layer. Here, we demonstrate that by applying the antisolvent via carrier-gas free spraying, the stoichiometry of the perovskite layer is far better preserved. Consequently, the photovoltaic performance of triple cation photovoltaic devices fabri…
Selecting suitable charge transport layers and suppressing non-radiative recombination at interfaces to the absorber layer are vital to maximize the efficiency of halide perovskite solar cells. In this work, high-quality perovskite thin films and devices are fabricated with different fullerene-based electron transport layers and different self-assembled monolayers as hole transport layers. We then perform a comparative study of a significant variety of different electrical, optical and photoemission-based characterization techniques to quantify the properties of the solar cells, the individual…
Extraordinary electronic phases can form in artificial oxide heterostructures, which will provide a fertile ground for new physics and also give rise to novel device functions. Based on a systematic first-principles density functional theory study of the magnetic and electronic properties of the (111) superlattices (ABO3)2/(AB'O3)10 of 4d and 5d transition metal perovskite (B = Ru, Rh, Ag, Re, Os, Ir, Au; AB'O3 = LaAlO3, SrTiO3), we demonstrate that due to quantum confinement, bilayers (LaBO3)2 (B = Ru, Re, Os) and (SrBO3)2 (B = Rh, Os, Ir) are ferromagnetic with ordering temperatures up to ro…
Magnetic topological quantum materials have attracted great attention due to their exotic topological quantum physics induced by the interplay among crystalology, magnetism, and topology, which is of profound importance to fundamental research and technology applications. However, limited materials are experimentally available, most of whom are realized by magnetic impurity doping or heterostructural constructions. In this work, based on the first-principles calculations, we predict that double perovskite Ba2CdReO6 is an intrinsic ferromagnetic topological semi-half-metal, while the ferrimagne…
Polycrystalline Sr$_3$OsO$_6$, which is an ordered double-perovskite insulator, is synthesized via solid-state reaction under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of 1200 $^\circ$C and 6 GPa. The synthesis enables us to conduct a comparative study of the bulk form of Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ toward revealing the driving mechanism of 1000 K ferromagnetism, which has recently been discovered for epitaxially grown Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ films. Unlike the film, the bulk is dominated by antiferromagnetism rather than ferromagnetism. Therefore, robust ferromagnetic order appears only when Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ is unde…
Understanding and controlling the interfacial magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films are crucial for spintronic device applications. However, using conventional magnetometry, it is difficult to detect them separately from the bulk properties. Here, by utilizing tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a single-barrier heterostructure composed of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO)/ LaAlO3 (LAO)/ Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001), we reveal the presence of a peculiar strong two-fold magnetic anisotropy (MA) along the [110]c direction at the LSMO/LAO interface, which is not observed in bulk LSMO. This MA shows…
We present a comprehensive study on the magnetic structure, dynamics, and phase evolution in the single-phase double perovskite $La_2CoMnO_6$. The mixed valence state due to oxygen deficiency is verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and confirms a double ferromagnetic transition observed in DC magnetization. Neutron diffraction reveals that the magnetic structure is dominated by long-range ferromagnetic ordering, which is further corroborated by a critical exponents analysis of the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition. An analysis of the magnetization dynamics by means of lin…
We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of double perovskites Gd2MgIrO6 by first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Based on the DFT calculations, Gd2MgIrO6 is found to have a ferromagnetic (FM) ground state. The material undergo half-metallic ferromagnets to Mott-Hubbard insulator transition which happens due to strong correlation in Gd-4f and Ir-5d states. Our results shows that the 5d electrons of Ir hybridize strongly with O-2p states near the Fermi level giving rise to the insulating state of Gd2MgIrO6. Our study suggests that the enhanced magnetic moment is a resu…
Investigation of the oxygen-deficient 112-type ordered oxides of the type LnBaCoMnO5+δ(Ln = Nd, Eu) evidences certain unusual magnetic behavior at low temperatures, compared to the LnBaCo2O5+δcobaltites. One observes that the substitution of manganese for cobalt suppresses the ferromagnetic state and induces strong antiferromagnetic interactions. Importantly, NdBaCoMnO5.9 depicts a clear paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic type transition around 220 K, whereas for EuBaCoMnO5.7 one observes an unusual magnetic behavior below 177 K which consists of ferromagnetic regions embedded in an antiferroma…
Solution-processed quantum dots (QDs) have a high potential for fabricating low cost, flexible and large-scale solar energy harvesting devices. It has recently been demonstrated that hybrid devices employing a single monovalent cation perovskite solution for PbS QD surface passivation exhibit enhanced photovoltaic performance when compared to standard ligand passivation. Herein we demonstrate that the use of a triple cation Cs0.05(MA0.17FA0.83)0.95Pb(I0.9Br0.1)3 perovskite composition for surface passivation of the quantum dots results in highly efficient solar cells, which maintain 96 % of th…

Helimagnetic materials are identified as promising for novel spintronic applications. Since helical spin order is manifested as a compromise of competing magnetic exchange interactions, its emergence is limited by unique constraints imposed by the crystalline lattice and the interaction geometries, as exemplified by the multiferroic perovskite manganites with large orthorhombic distortion. Here we show that a simple cubic perovskite SrCoO$_3$ with room-temperature ferromagnetism has the potential to host helimagnetic order upon isotropic lattice expansion. Increasing the Ba content $x$ in Sr$_…
The scalability of highly efficient organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is one of the remaining challenges of solar module manufacturing. Various scalable methods have been explored to strive for uniform perovskite films of high crystal quality on large-area substrates. However, each of these methods have individual drawbacks, limiting the successful commercialization of perovskite photovoltaics. Here, we report a fully scalable hybrid process, which combines vapor- and solution-based techniques to deposit high quality uniform perovskite films on large-area substrates. This two-ste…
The theoretical description of the nanostructured Pb(Fe1/2Ta1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFTx-PZT(1-x)) and Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFNx-PZT(1-x)) intriguing ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric properties at temperatures higher than 100 K are absent to date. The goal of this work is to propose the theoretical description of the physical nature and the mechanisms of the aforementioned properties, including room temperature ferromagnetism, phase diagram dependence on the composition x with a special attention to the multiferroic properties at room temperature, including anomalo…
In the family of double perovskites, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) has been so far observed only in half-metallic ferrimagnets such as the known case Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ where it has been assigned to the tunneling MR at grain boundaries due to the half-metallic nature. Here we report a new material-Tl$_2$NiMnO$_6$, a relatively ordered double perovskite stablized by the high pressure and high temperature synthesis-showing CMR in the vicinity of its Curie temperature. We explain the origin of such effect with neutron diffraction experiment and electronic structure calculations that reveal the ma…
BaRuO3 having five different crystal structures has been synthesized by varying the pressure while sintering. Contrary to the other phases being nonmagnetic, the cubic perovskite phase synthesized recently shows an itinerant ferromagnetic character. We investigated this ferromagnetic BaRuO3 using first principles calculations. A few van Hove singularities appear around the Fermi energy, causing unusually high magnetovolume effects of $ΔM/Δa$ ~ 4.3 $μ_B$/Åas well as a Stoner instability [IN(0) ~ 1.2]. At the optimized lattice parameter a, the magnetic moment M is 1.01 $μ_B$ in the local spin de…
The anomalous thermal expansion in a layered 3$d$-5$d$ based triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$CoIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$ is investigated using high resolution synchrotron diffraction. Below the magneto-structural transition at 107\,K, the onset of antiferromagnetic order is associated with a monoclinic distortion of the hexagonal structure. Deeper within the magnetically ordered state, a part of the monoclinic phase distorts even further, and both these structural phases co-exist down to the lowest measured temperatures. We observe negative thermal expansion in this phase co-existence regime, which ap…
The same optical and electronic properties that make perovskite thin films ideal absorber materials in photovoltaic applications are also beneficial in photon upconversion devices. In this contribution, we investigate the rubrene-triplet sensitization by perovskite thin films based on methylammonium formamidinium lead triiodide (MAFA). To elucidate the role of trap states which affect the free carrier lifetimes, we fabricate MAFA perovskite thin films with three different thicknesses. By measuring the change in the photoluminescence properties under different excitation fluences, we find that …
Rare earth perovskite cobaltites are increasingly recognized as materials of importance due to rich physics and chemistry in their ordered-disordered structure for the same composition. Apart from colossal magnetoresistance effect, like manganites, the different forms of cobaltites exhibit interesting phenomena including spin, charge and orbital ordering, electronic phase separation, insulator-metal transition, large thermoelectric power at low temperature. Moreover, the cobaltites which display colossal magnetoresistance effect could be used as read heads in magnetic data storage and also in …
We report on the magnetic entropy change and the critical exponents in the double perovskite manganite Y2NiMnO6 with a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition TC=85K. For a magnetic field change of 80kOe, a maximum magnetic entropy change -6.57 J /kg K is recorded around TC. The corresponding relative cooling power (134 J / kg) is appreciable towards potential application as a magnetic refrigerant. The critical exponents, beta and gamma satisfy well to values derived for a 3D Heisenberg ferromagnet.
Two-dimensional (2D) magnets have broad application prospects in the spintronics, but how to effectively control them with a small electric field is still an issue. Here we propose that 2D magnets can be efficiently controlled in a multiferroic heterostructure composed of 2D magnetic material and perovskite oxide ferroelectric (POF) whose dielectric polarization is easily flipped under a small electric field. We illustrate the feasibility of such strategy in the bilayer CrI3/BiFeO3(001) heterostructure by using the first-principles calculations. Different from the traditional POF multiferroic …
A detailed understanding of the carrier dynamics and emission characteristics of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites is critical for their optoelectronic and energy harvesting applications. In this work, we reveal the impact of the crystal lattice disorder on the photo-generated electron-hole pairs through low-temperature photoluminescence measurements. We provide strong evidence that the intrinsic disorder forms a sub-bandgap tail density of states, which determines the emission properties at low temperature. The PL spectra indicate that the disorder evolves with increasing temperature,…
We have investigated the temperature-dependent Raman-active phonons and the magnetic properties of Gd(Co1/2Mn1/2)O3 perovskite ceramics in the temperature range from 40 K to 300 K. The samples crystallized in an orthorhombic distorted simple perovskite, whose symmetry belongs to the Pnma space group. The data reveals spin-phonon coupling near the ferromagnetic transition occurring at around 120 K. The correlation of the Raman and magnetization data suggests that the structural order influences the magnitude of the spin-phonon coupling.
We report a comprehensive investigation of the triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$CoIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$. Stabilizing in the hexagonal $P6_{3}/mmc$ symmetry at room temperature, this system transforms to a monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry at the magnetic phase transition. On further reduction in temperature, the system partially distorts to an even lower symmetry ($P2/c$), with both these structurally disparate phases coexisting down to the lowest measured temperatures. The magnetic structure as determined from neutron diffraction data indicates a weakly canted antiferromagnetic structure, which is also s…
We demonstrate that ethylammonium copper chloride, (C2H5NH3)2CuCl4, a member of the hybrid perovskite family is an electrically polar and magnetic compound with dielectric anomaly around the Curie point (247 K). We have found large spontaneous electric polarization below this point accompanied with a color change in the sample. The system is also ferroelectric, with large remnant polarization (37μC/cm2) that is comparable to classical ferroelectric compounds. The results are ascribed to hydrogen-bond ordering of the organic chains. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and dominant ferromagnetic…
We report a first-principles study of Bi-based 3$d$-5$d$ ordered double perovskite oxides (A$_2$BB$^\prime$O$_6$) with a 3$d$ atom (Fe) at the B-site and 5$d$ atoms (Re,Ir) at the B$^\prime$-site while keeping highly polarizable ions (Bi$^{3+}$) at the A-site. We find that, under coherent heteroepitaxy, Bi$_2$FeReO$_6$} exhibits a strain-driven anti-ferromagnetic insulator to ferrimagnetic semi-metal transition, while Bi$_2$FeIrO$_6$ shows correlation driven ferromagnetic insulator to ferrimagnetic half-metal transition with calculated magnetic moments of 5 $μ_B$/f.u. and 3 $μ_B$/f.u., respect…

The use of microwave irradiation is a promising alternative heat source for the synthesis of inorganic materials such as perovskite oxides. The method offers massive energy and time savings as compared to the traditional ceramic method. In this work we review the basic principles of the microwave heating mechanism based on interactions between dipoles in the material and the electromagnetic microwave. Furthermore, we comment on and classify all different sub-types of microwave synthesis such as solid-state microwave and microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis. In the experimental part of thi…
We have investigated the thermal Hall effect of magnons for various ferromagnetic insulators. For pyrochlore ferromagnetic insulators Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, Ho$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, and In$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$, finite thermal Hall conductivities have been observed below the Curie temperature $T_C$ . From the temperature and magnetic field dependences, it is concluded that magnons are responsible for the thermal Hall effect. The Hall effect of magnons can be well explained by the theory based on the Berry curvature in momentum space induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The analysis has been ext…
The functional characteristics of double perovskites with unique ferromagnetic-insulator ground state have been controversial due to the unavoidable presence of anti-site disorders (ASDs). Here, we aim to investigate the origin of magnetic ordering on local and global scales in Sm$_{2}$NiMnO$_{6}$ (SNMO) double perovskite system. Different calcination routes are exploited to generate different cation arrangements in SNMO and the corresponding magnetic configurations are examined using the high energy (E $ \sim $0.3 eV) `hot neutrons', which has helped to overcome Sm absorption as well as to re…
Magnetic insulators have been intensively studied for over 100 years, and they, in particular ferrites, are considered to be the cradle of magnetic exchange interactions in solids. Their wide range of applications include microwave devices and permanent magnets . They are also suitable for spintronic devices owing to their high resistivity, low magnetic damping, and spin-dependent tunneling probabilities. The Curie temperature is the crucial factor determining the temperature range in which any ferri/ferromagnetic system remains stable. However, the record Curie temperature has stood for over …

Single crystals of a new twinned hexagonal perovskite compound Sr8Os6.3O24 have been synthesized, and structural and magnetic properties have been determined. The compound crystallizes in a hexagonal cell with lattice parameters a = 9.6988(3) Å and c = 18.1657(5) Å. The structure is an eight-layered hexagonal B-site deficient perovskite with the layer sequence (ccch)2 and represents the first example of a hexagonal structure among 5d oxides adopting a twin option. The sample shows spontaneous ferromagnetic magnetization below 430 K with a small saturation moment of 0.11 μB/Os ion. This is the …
In this paper we investigated the influence of the rare-earth ionic radii on the spin-phonon coupling in RE2NiMnO6 double perovskites by Raman spectroscopy. Spin-phonon in dense Nd2NiMnO6 and Gd2NiMnO6 ceramics were investigated by Raman spectroscopy at low temperatures. The magnitude of the coupling observed in comparison with other isostructural compounds shows that it is not influenced by the rare-earth ionic radius, as well as the deviation of the position of the stretching phonon in the ferromagnetic phase with relation to the anharmonic contributions follows a power law.
The defect tolerance nature of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is reflected from its stupendous growth in photovoltaic performances. The presence of lattice defect can manipulate or even gives rise to some exceptional properties which otherwise would have remained unseen. One of such properties reported in this article is the experimental observation of defect mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in methylammonium lead halide perovskite for the very first time, ably supported by ab-initio calculations. Theoretical analysis predicts the ferromagnetism principally arises from the iodide …
