Ferromagnetic La3NiAlMnO9 (LNAMO) and La3CoAlMnO9 (LCAMO) triple-perovskite thin films are stabilized in the 750-860 oC temperature range in 100 to 900 mTorr O2 pressure range using pulsed-laser deposition. The LCAMO and LNAMO films exhibit ferromagnetism up to 190 K and 130 K respectively. The structural, optical and magnetic properties of these films demonstrate that the B-site 3d-cations, Al, Mn and Co or Ni ions, are structurally short-range ordered. The strong spin-lattice-polarization coupling in LCAMO is evidenced by the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the softening of the phonon frequencies starting in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition mimicking the behaviours of La2CoMnO6 double perovskite.
Discovering materials that display a linear magnetoelectric effect at room temperature is challenge. Such materials could facilitate novel devices based on the electric-field control of magnetism. Here we present simple, chemically intuitive design rules to identify a new class of bulk magnetoelectric materials based on the 'bicolor' layering of $Pnma$ ferrite perovskites, e.g., LaFeO$_3$/ LnFeO$_3$ superlattices for which Ln = lanthanide cation. We use first-principles density-functional theory calculations to confirm these ideas. Additionally, we elucidate the origin of this effect and show …
In this article, we perform the symmetry analysis of perovskite-based multiferroics: bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3)-like, orthochromites (RCrO3), and Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (Ca3Mn2O7-like), being the typical representatives of multiferroics of the trigonal, rhombic, and tetragonal crystal families and explore the effect of crystallographic distortions on magnetoelectric properties. We determine the principal order parameters for each of the considered structures and obtain their invariant combinations consistent with the particular symmetry. This approach allowed us to analyze the features of…

We report a theoretical study of the non-linear magnetoelectric response of GdFeO$_3$ through an analytical approach combined with a Heisenberg model which is fitted against first-principles calculations. Our theory reproduces the non-linear change of polarization under applied magnetic field reported experimentally such that it allows to analyze the origin of the large responses in the different directions. We show that the non-linear character of the response in these materials originates from the fact that the antiferromagnetic order of Gd atoms changes non-linearly with respect to the appl…
Polarization induced spin switching of atoms in magnetic materials opens for possibilities to design and develop advanced spintronic devices, in particular, storage devices where the magnetic state can be controlled by an electric field. We employ density-functional theory calculations to study the magnetic properties of a perovskite strontium cobalt oxyfluoride Sr$_2$CoO$_3$F (SCOF) in a hybrid perovskite heterostructure, where SCOF is sandwiched between two ferroelectic BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) layers. Our calculations show that the spin state of the central Co atom in SCOF can be controlled by alter…
In this article the mechanism of the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effect in the rhombohedral multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ is considered. The study is based on the symmetry approach of the GinzburgLandau type, in which polarization, antiferrodistortion, and antiferromagnetic momentum vectors are viewed as ordering parameters. We demonstrate that the linear ME effect in BFO is caused by reorientation of the antiferrodistortion vector in either electric or magnetic field. The numerical estimations, which show quantitative agreement with the results of the recent measurements in film samples, have been p…

We use a group theoretical approach to enumerate the possible couplings between magnetism and ferroelectric polarisation in the parent $Pm\bar{3}m$ perovskite structure. We show that third order magnetoelectric coupling terms must always involve magnetic ordering at the A and B-site which either transforms both as R-point or both as X-point time odd irreducible representations (irreps). For fourth order couplings we demonstrate that this criterion may be relaxed allowing couplings involving irreps at X, M and R-points which collectively conserve crystal momentum, producing a magnetoelectric ef…
The theoretical description of the nanostructured Pb(Fe1/2Ta1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFTx-PZT(1-x)) and Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFNx-PZT(1-x)) intriguing ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric properties at temperatures higher than 100 K are absent to date. The goal of this work is to propose the theoretical description of the physical nature and the mechanisms of the aforementioned properties, including room temperature ferromagnetism, phase diagram dependence on the composition x with a special attention to the multiferroic properties at room temperature, including anomalo…
Spin-phonon interactions are central to many interesting phenomena, ranging from superconductivity to magnetoelectric effects. Yet, they are believed to have a negligible influence on the structural behavior of most materials. For example, magnetic perovskite oxides often undergo structural transitions accompanied by magnetic signatures whose minuteness suggests that the underlying spin-phonon couplings are largely irrelevant. Here we present an exception to this rule, showing that novel effects can occur as a consequence. Our first-principles calculations reveal that spin-phonon interactions …
Two-dimensional (2D) magnets have broad application prospects in the spintronics, but how to effectively control them with a small electric field is still an issue. Here we propose that 2D magnets can be efficiently controlled in a multiferroic heterostructure composed of 2D magnetic material and perovskite oxide ferroelectric (POF) whose dielectric polarization is easily flipped under a small electric field. We illustrate the feasibility of such strategy in the bilayer CrI3/BiFeO3(001) heterostructure by using the first-principles calculations. Different from the traditional POF multiferroic …
A topological insulating phase has theoretically been predicted for the thermodynamically unstable perovskite phase of YBiO$_{3}$. Here, it is shown that the crystal structure of the Y-Bi-O system can be controlled by using a BaBiO$_{3}$ buffer layer. The BaBiO$_{3}$ film overcomes the large lattice mismatch of 12% with the SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate by forming a rocksalt structure in between the two perovskite structures. Depositing an YBiO$_{3}$ film directly on a SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate gives a fluorite structure. However, when the Y-Bi-O system is deposited on top of the buffer layer with the cor…
In ABO3 perovskites, oxygen octahedron rotations are common structural distortions that can promote large ferroelectricity in BiFeO3 with an R3c structure [1], but suppress ferroelectricity in CaTiO3 with a Pbnm symmetry [2]. For many CaTiO3-like perovskites, the BiFeO3 structure is a metastable phase. Here, we report the stabilization of the highly-polar BiFeO3-like phase of CaTiO3 in a BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice grown on a SrTiO3 substrate. The stabilization is realized by a reconstruction of oxygen octahedron rotations at the interface from the pattern of nonpolar bulk CaTiO3 to a different…
There have been a large number of papers on bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) over the past few years, trying to exploit its room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroic properties. Although these are attractive, BiFeO3 is not the ideal multiferroic, due to weak magnetization and the difficulty in limiting leakage currents. Thus there is an ongoing search for alternatives, including such materials as gallium ferrite (GaFeO3). In the present work we report a comprehensive study of the perovskite PbTi1-xPdxO3 with 0 < x < 0.3. Our study includes dielectric, impedance and magnetization measurements, cond…
This review devoted to multiferroic properties of Bismuth-based perovskites falls into two parts. The first part focuses on BiFeO3 and summarizes the recent progress made in the studies of its pressure-temperature phase diagram and magnetoelectric coupling phenomena. The second part discusses in a more general way the issue of polar - and multiferroic - phases in BiBO3 perovskites and the competition between ferroelectricity and other structural instabilities, from an inventory of recently synthetized compounds.
Multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric and magnetic ordering coexist, are of fundamental interest for the development of novel memory devices that allow for electrical writing and non-destructive magnetic readout operation. The great challenge is to create room temperature multiferroic materials with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) orderings. BiFeO3 has been the most heavily investigated single-phase multiferroic to date due to the coexistence of its magnetic order and ferroelectric order at room temperature. However, there is no net magnetic moment …
The impact of ordered vacancies on the dynamic stability of perovskites is investigated under the $\textit{ab initio}$ framework with a focus on cubic BaFeO$_{3}$ ($Pm\bar{3}m$) and vacancy-ordered monoclinic BaFeO$_{2.67}$ ($P2_{1}/m$). The harmonic approximation shows that both structures are dynamically unstable at 0 K. For the monoclinic structure, the instability is related to rotational distortions of the Fe coordination tetrahedra near the ordered vacancies. $\textit{Ab initio}$ molecular dynamics simulations in combination with the introduced structural descriptor demonstrate that both…
Extensive studies have been performed on layered compounds, ranging from layered cuprates to van der Waals materials with critical issues of intergrowths and stacking faults. However, such structures have been studied less because of experimental difficulty. We present characteristic defect structures of intergrowths in the Ruddlesden-Popper Ca$_{2.46}$Sr$_{0.54}$Ti$_2$O$_7$, which is known to exhibit hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that numerous intergrowths composed of 7 and 15 layers are introduced in the ferroelectric domains. Elemental maps demon…
Amongst the X(Sn,Pb)Y$_3$ perovskites currently under scrutiny for their photovoltaic applications, the cubic B-$α$ phase of CsSnI$_3$ is arguably the best characterized experimentally. Yet, according to the standard harmonic theory of phonons, this deceptively simple phase should not exist at all due to rotational instabilities of the SnI$_6$ octahedra. Here, employing self-consistent phonon theory we show that these soft modes are stabilized at experimental conditions through anharmonic phonon-phonon interactions between the Cs ions and their iodine cages. We further calculate the renormaliz…
Metal halide perovskites are known to suffer from rapid degradation, limiting their direct applicability. Here, the degradation of phenethylammonium lead iodide (PEA2PbI4) two-dimensional perovskites under ambient conditions is studied using fluorescence, absorbance and fluorescence lifetime measurements. It is demonstrated that a long-term stability of two-dimensional perovskites can be achieved through the encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride. While un-encapsulated perovskite flakes degrade within hours, the encapsulated perovskites are stable for at least three months. In addition, en…

There is great interest in hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The compounds [C(NH$_{2}$)$_{3}$]M(HCOO)$_{3}$, where M=Cu$^{2+}$ or Cr$^{2+}$ are Jahn-Teller (JT) active ions, are MOF with perovskite topology which crystallizes in polar space group Pna2$_{1}$. In inorganic compounds, octahedral tilting and Jahn-Teller structural distortions are usually non-polar distortions. However, in this MOF cooperative interactions between the antiferro-distortive distortions of the framework and the C(NH2)$_{3}$ organic cation via hydrogen bonding breaks the invers…
In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that th…
We have studied the atomic ordering of B-site transition metals and magnetic properties in the pulsed-laser deposited films of La2CrFeO6 (LCFO) and La2VMnO6 (LVMO), whose bulk materials are known to be single perovskites with random distribution of the B-site cations. Despite similar ionic characters of constituent transition metals in each compound, the maximum B-site order attained was surprisingly high, ~90% for LCFO and ~80% for LVMO, suggesting a significant role of epitaxial stabilization in the spontaneous ordering process. Magnetization and valence state characterizations revealed that…
Despite the great technological and scientific importance, a well-controlled coupled behavior in magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at room temperature remains challenging. We demonstrate that the self-ordered A2BBO6 (e.g., A = La, B = Mn, and B = Ni) double perovskites provide a unique alternative opportunity to control and/or to induce such behavior in oxides. In this paper, we outline and discuss the various challenges and bottleneck issues related to this class of materials using La2NiMnO6 as a prototype. Details of the synthesis strategies, using pulsed laser deposition as a central t…
Using first principles density functional calculations, together with exact diagonalization of Fe-Mo Hamiltonian constructed in a first principles Wannier function basis, we studied the electronic structure of La doped double perovskite compound Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$. Our calculation show stabilization of kinetic energy driven antiferromagnetic phase for La rich compounds, in agreement with the results obtained on the basis of previous model calculations.
In this work multiferroic thin films of Bi containing perovskite oxides are discussed, where the driving force for ferroelectricity are the Bi3+ lone-pair electrons. First, a brief introduction of Bi containing multiferroic perovskite oxides will be presented to describe the mechanisms for establishing magnetic and ferroelectric order in these compounds and some recent developments in this field of research are reported. The second section addresses experimental aspects of epitaxial thin film growth of BiMnO3, (Bi0.9La0.1)2NiMnO6 (BLNMO) and BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition. The th…
Thin films of perovskite Ruthenates of the general formula ARuO3 (A = Ca and Sr) are versatile electrical conductors for viable oxide electronics. They are also scientifically intriguing, as they exhibit non-trivial electromagnetic ground states depending on the A-site element. Among them, realization of the cubic perovskite (3C) BaRuO3 thin film has been a challenge so far, because the 3C phase is metastable with the largest formation energy among the various polymorph phases of BaRuO3. In this study, we successfully prepared 3C BaRuO3 thin films employing epitaxial stabilization. The 3C BaRu…
The layered perovskite YBaCuFeO5 (YBCFO) is able to adopt chiral magnetic order up to unexpectedly high temperatures, paving the way to strong magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. In this perovskite A-site cations are fully ordered whereas the occupancy of the B-sites strongly depend on the preparation process. Though the structure is not geometrically frustrated, the presence of partial Fe3+/Cu2+ disorder at the B-sites produces magnetic frustration. In an effort to increase the spin-orbit coupling in the system, we have synthesized and studied YBaCuFe0.95Mn0.05O5 in single crystal f…
Layered halide perovskites are solution-processed natural heterostructures where quantum and dielectric confinement effects down to the nanoscale strongly influence the optical properties, leading to stabilization of bound excitons. Achieving a detailed understanding of the exciton properties is crucial to boost the exploitation of these materials in energy conversion and light emission applications, with current on-going debate related to the energy order of the four components of the most stable exciton. To provide theoretical feedback and solve among contrasting literature reports, we perfo…
We report on atomic ordering of B-site transition-metals and magnetic properties of epitaxial La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films grown by pulsed-laser deposition under various conditions. The highest ordered sample exhibited a fraction of antisite-disorder of only 0.05 and a saturation magnetization of ~2μ_{B} per formula unit at 5 K. The result is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of local spin moment (3d^{3}_{\downarrow}3d^{5}_{\uparrow}; S = -3/2+5/2 = 1). Therefore, the magnetic ground state of La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite that has been long debate is unambiguously revealed to b…
Frequency-dependent and temperature-dependent dielectric measurements are performed on double perovskite Tb$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The real ($ε_1$) and imaginary ($ε_2$) parts of dielectric permittivity show three plateaus suggesting dielectric relaxation originating from bulk, grain boundaries and the sample-electrode interfaces respectively. The temperature and frequency variation of $ε_1$ and $ε_2$ are successfully simulated by a $RC$ circuit model. The complex plane of impedance, $Z'$-$Z"$, is simulated using a series network with a resistor $R$ and a constant phase element. Through the analysis of…
The structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb free double perovskite multiferroic Bi2FeTiO6 are investigated using density functional theory within the general gradient approximation (GGA) method. Our structural optimization using total energy calculations for different potential structures show a minimum energy for a non-centrosymmetric rhombohedral structure with R3 space group. Bi2FeTiO6 is found to be an antiferromagnetic insulator with C-type magnetic ordering with bandgap value of 0.3 eV. The calculated magnetic moment of 3.52 μ_B at Fe site shows the high spin …
The perovskite (1-x)YMnO$_3$-xBiFeO$_3$ binary system is very promising because of its multiferroic end members. Nanocrystalline phases have been recently obtained by mechanosynthesis across the system, and the perovskite structural evolution has been described. Two continuous solid solutions with orthorhombic Pnma and rhombohedral R3c symmetries were found, which coexist within a broad compositional interval of 0.5 < x < 0.9. This might be a polar-nonpolar morphotropic phase boundary region, at which strong phase-change magnetoelectric responses can be expected. A major issue is phase decompo…
The layered perovskite YBaCuFeO5 (YBCFO) is considered one of the best candidates to high-temperature chiral multiferroics with strong magnetoelectric coupling. In RBaCuFeO5 perovskites (R: rare-earth or Y) A-site cations are fully ordered whereas their magnetic properties strongly depend on the preparation process. They exhibit partial cationic disorder at the B-site that generates a magnetic spiral stabilized through directionally assisted long range coupling between canted locally frustrated spins. Moreover the orientation of its magnetic spiral can be critical for the magnetoelectric respo…
We report the first principle investigations on the structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of a Pb free double perovskite multiferroic Bi2NiTiO6 using density functional theory within the general gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U method. Our results show that Bi2NiTiO6 will be an insulator with G-type magnetic ordering in its ground state with Ni2+ in a high spin state and a spin moment of 1.74μ_B. The paraelectric phase stabilizes in nonmagnetic state with Ni2+ in low spin configuration showing that spin state transition plays an important role in strong magnetoele…
We report a comprehensive study of the low-level substitution of Mn$^{3+}$ by Fe$^{3+}$ effect on the static and dynamic magnetoelectric coupling in TbMn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O$_3$ ($x=0$, 0.02 and 0.04). The cationic substitution has a large impact on the balance between competitive magnetic interactions and, as a result, on the stabilization of the magnetic structures and ferroelectric phase at low temperatures. Low-lying electromagnon excitation is activated in the cycloidal modulated antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase in TbMnO$_3$, while it is observed up to TN in the Fe-substituted compoun…
We report observation of surface-defect-induced room temperature multiferroicity - surface ferromagnetism ($M_S$ at 50 kOe $\sim$0.005 emu/g), ferroelectricity ($P_R$ $\sim$2 nC/cm$^2$), and significantly large magnetoelectric coupling (decrease in $P_R$ by $\sim$80\% under $\sim$15 kOe field) - in nanorods (diameter $\sim$100 nm) of double perovskite Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$ compound. In bulk form, this system exhibits multiferroicity only below its magnetic transition temperature $T_N$ $\approx$ 70 K. On the other hand, the oxygen vacancies, formed at the surface region (thickness $\sim$10 nm) of the …
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced b…
Ferromagnetic insulators (FMIs) are one of the most important components in developing dissipationless electronic and spintronic devices. However, since ferromagnetism generally accompanies metallicity, FMIs are innately rare to find in nature. Here, novel room-temperature FMI films are epitaxially synthesized by deliberate control of the ratio of two B-site cations in the double perovskite Sr2FeReO6. In contrast to the known ferromagnetic metallic phase in stoichiometric Sr2FeReO6, a FMI state with a high Curie temperature (Tc~400 K) and a large saturation magnetization (MS~1.8 μB/f.u.) is fo…
Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ has drawn a lot of research attention due to its contentious room-temperature multiferroicity. Due to the unstability of hexagonal phase in the bulk form, most experimental studies focused on LuFeO$_3$ thin films which can be stabilized by strain using proper substrates. Here we report on the hexagonal phase stabilization, magnetism, and magnetoelectric coupling of bulk LuFeO$_3$ by partial Sc-substitution of Lu. First, our first-principles calculations show that the hexagonal structure can be stabilized by partial Sc substitution, while the multiferroic properties includin…
The rhodium doping in the LaCo$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_3$ perovskite series ($x=0.02-0.5$) has been studied by X-ray diffraction, electric transport and magnetization measurements, complemented by electronic structure GGA+U calculations in supercell for different concentration regimes. No charge transfer between Co$^{3+}$ and Rh$^{3+}$ is evidenced. The diamagnetic ground state of LaCoO$_3$, based on Co$^{3+}$ in low-spin (LS) state, is disturbed even by a small doping of Rh. The driving force is the elastic energy connected with incorporation of a large Rh$^{3+}$ cation into the matrix of small LS …
The unconventional Si-compatible ferroelectricity in hafnia-based systems, which becomes robust only at nanoscopic sizes, has attracted a lot of interest. While a metastable polar orthorhombic (o-) phase (Pca21) is widely regarded as the responsible phase for ferroelectricity, a higher energy polar rhombohedral (r-) phase is recently reported on epitaxial HfZrO4 (HZO) films grown on (001) SrTiO3 (R3m or R3), (0001) GaN (R3), and Si (111). Armed with results on these systems, here we report a systematic study leading towards identifying comprehensive global trends for stabilizing r-phase polymo…
The structure and ground state electronic structure of the recently synthesized SrPdO$_3$ perovskite [A. Galal {\em et al.}, J. Power Sources, {\bf 195}, 3806 (2010)] have been studied by means of screened hybrid functional and the GW approximation with the inclusion of electron-hole interaction within the test-charge/test-charge scheme. By conducting a structural search based on lattice dynamics and group theoretical method we identify the orthorhombic phase with $P_{nma}$ space group as the most stable crystal structure. The phase transition from the ideal cubic perovskite structure to the $…
After more than a century of studies on the optical properties of Bi3+ ions, the assignment of the nature of the emissions and the bands of the absorption spectra remain ambiguous. Here, we report an insight into the spectroscopy of Bi3+-activated CaMO3 perovskites (M = Zr, Sn, and Ti), discussing the factors driving the metal-to-metal charge transfer and sp -> s2 transitions. With the aim to figure out the whole scenario, a combined experimental and theoretical approach is employed. The comparison between the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence emissions with the temperature depen…
